Young Clark Kellog (Matthew Broderick) had no idea film school would drop him into the hands of a real-life Godfather, but after a street punk robs him his first day in New York City, that's just where the road leads. Marlon Brando let everyone know he was in on the joke with his hammy, good-humored performance as the bulldog-jowled Mafioso Carmine Sabatini, the man Clark's prissy, self-important professor swears was the real life inspiration of Don Corleone. Carmine has a modest proposal for the naive kid from Vermont involving Carmine's gorgeous daughter Tina (Penelope Ann Miller) and the illegal importing of an endangered lizard. Andrew Bergman's tongue-in-cheek comedy keeps the spoofing in a low key, underplaying the outrageous situations even as he piles them higher: if the sight of a six-foot-long lizard scattering shoppers as it runs wild through a New York City mall doesn't do it for you, there's always Bert Parks's rousing rendition of Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm." --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars A comedic offer you can't refuse.......2007-05-26

Everyone has their share of hard times as a college freshman. Getting screwed into taking Bio at 8 a.m. on Fridays. Not having a fake I.D. -- and not knowing enough people who do. RA's busting you for partying in your room. The list goes on and on.

Few of us, however, can claim to having as abysmal a start to their collegiate career as Clark Kellogg (Matthew Broderick) in "The Freshman." The naive Clark, who hails from Vermont, is set to attend New York University as the film begins. Shortly after arriving in NYC, he meets alleged cab driver Victor Ray (played by the talented Bruno Kirby, best known for his lead role in "City Slickers"), who promptly steals his luggage. As Clark so aptly puts it in his amusing voice-over narration, "I had been in New York for 19 minutes and 11 seconds, and I was already ruined."

Fortunately (or not) for Clark, his path crosses again with Victor Ray, which leads him to Carmine Sabatini (Marlon Brando), an elderly Italian gentleman who bears a striking resemblance to none other than the Godfather, Don Corleone. Before Clark knows what's happening, he's running errands (possibly illegal) for Carmine, is engaged to his beautiful daughter, and is being followed by federal agents.

The chemistry between Broderick and Brando is one of the movie's strongest points. Broderick is a talented comic actor who's perfect here as the innocent straight man, and Brando is also wonderful in a role that smartly nods to his legendary work in "The Godfather." Check out the scenes where Carmine and Clark drink cappucino, discuss Mussolini and exchange the "kiss of kisses." Priceless stuff.

Aside from Broderick and Brando, "The Freshman" boasts a solid supporting cast with many faces you'll recognize, from the aforementioned Kirby to Penelope Ann Miller ("Carlito's Way") to Frank Whaley, who you may recall from his unfortunate experience of snacking on a Royale With Cheese when Travolta and Samuel L. pay him a visit in "Pulp Fiction." All are solid.

Fans of the "Godfather" trilogy will love this movie and the numerous Godfather references, including several highly amusing scenes in which Clark's film teacher screens and comments on sections of "The Godfather Part II." However, you need not be familiar with the "Godfather" films to enjoy this movie. Writer/Director Andrew Bergman (who also wrote "Fletch" and co-wrote 'Blazing Saddles") has penned a comedy that effectively ranges from slapstick (Clark transporting a komodo dragon) to smart (Mona Lisa and "Godfather" references) to bizarre (supporting character Larry London's observation that "Carmine said one boy. And here are two.")

Considering the film's strong cast and sharp screenplay, fans of Broderick, "The Godfather," and just good comedies in general will want to give this underrated, unpredictable film a look.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny parody of mafia movies....................2006-11-19

The Freshman is a very funny movie. The central joke is that Marlon Brando plays a godfather type figure in lower Manhattan who for obvious reasons looks exactly like the titular character Brando so famously portrayed. Matthew Broderick is the freshman, an innocent NYU film student, who through some comedic misadventures gets involved with Brando and his "family". The funniest scenes involve a Komodo dragon loose in a New Jersey shopping mall though the whole film is a delightful comedy. The movie has no real violence and though there are a few mild "bad" words the movie is fairly appropriate for viewing by older kids and families.

5 out of 5 stars A really good movie........2006-11-03

This is a great movie. I love movies that have strong character actor parts. Everyone is alittle over the top and very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars histerical.......2006-10-07

The main charactic basicly has a look of panic about everything that's happening to him.

4 out of 5 stars Truly a great sleeper film. It was a huge deal when it came out!.......2006-09-01

This film had an enormous amount of publicity surrounding it because of Brando reprising his Vito Corleone role. No one knew whether it would be an enormous flop, or if it would be a huge hit... but when the chips fell it turned out to be a very funny movie that kind of happened and then faded away.

I am also an NYU grad and this film does a great send-up of the film school and the type of kids it attracts. It is priceless if you arrived in NYC from another environment, as I did. Brando perfectly mocks his legendary performance and many of the jokes are subtle, something rare in these Will Ferell / Wayans Brothers times we are living in. And every scene with the film professor is a riot, frighteningly close to many real NYU "elitists", sequestered in their insecure one-upsmanship.

The Freshman is a film that works on the strength of its perfectly-cast actors and their situations, and in the end succumbs to a pretty ridiculously far-fetched contrivance. But, I suppose it is in keeping with the screwball nature of its comedic origins not to take itself too seriously. It is a brilliant gem of a movie and one that deserves to be regarded with much higher acclaim.

4 out of 5 stars Enter the dragon . . ........2006-07-31

Komodo is a pretty good creature flick that delivers the goods, providing fear, excitement, and a story holds together well enough, as these things go.

Jill Hennessy is Victoria Juno, a psychiatrist treating a teenage boy traumatized when his parents were killed mysteriously on a small island. She believes that returning the young man to the scene of the trauma may help with his recovery. Once back on the island, the komodo strike swiftly, and soon Victoria and a small group of companions are on the run from the deadly creatures.

The story's resolution may be a bit weak, but slick action sequences, cool special effects, and acceptable dialog and acting, make this a pretty entertaining ride. Though in somewhat unfamiliar territory, Hennessy's performance is solid, rarely missing a step.

Michael Lantieri who has extensive experience doing special effects on numerous A-List blockbusters like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the Jurassic Park films, makes his directorial debut in this feature shot in the Gold Coast, Australia. His excellent commentary track is very frank, with lots of interesting and informative insights. The budgetary limitations and production tradeoffs are discussed extensively. Even with the economic constraints, Komodo is very nicely done and stands up to repeated viewings.

I love this movie!

Thank you Amazon for having it!!

3 out of 5 stars "Their Drool Is A Culture Medium!".......2004-10-15

This movie is full of cliches and full of itself, although the premise is no stupider than "Jurassic Park" with an aging hippie in a van dropping smelly eggs in the middle of nowhere. Of course several years later the eggs have hatched and this island with apparently one vacation home and a huge oil refinery on it are covered with these things. The dragons eat Kevin Zegers' parents and dog, and he is dutifully traumatized. Here is my first warning: get ready for about 45 minutes of Zegers staring blankly into space. A good looking psychologist (Jill Hennessy) and a female relative of Zegers (whose relationship to the boy is a bit unclear) take the kid back to the island under some ridiculous theory of mental therapy. Needless to say, the komodos are still there and chase everyone all over the place for a while, and get a couple of snacks along the way.

The oil company, which is evil of course, plots to get rid of the visitors. There are subplots involving a wrongly accused biologist, komodo saliva (the movie has excellent dragon drool effects), and evil Australians. Interestingly, despite the presence of two attractive leading characters, there is no romance in the film.

The plot is fairly implausible, but despite that and other shortcomings (like the extremely loud, annoying, and omnipresent musical score) there are good points about "Komodo." By far the best thing going for the movie are very good computer generated images of the dragons themselves. The dragons are actually a combination of hand puppets, robots, life size puppets, and computer generated images. A couple of the puppet shots look a bit hokey, but in general the lizards look excellent. My favorite computer generated lizard shot was the komodo trying to get into the back of the moving Volvo station wagon. Fans of creature films will like this movie for the effects if for nothing else. The acting isn't Oscar caliber, but it is consistent and generally well done (except the hyper over-the-top evil Australian oil executive) with no major complaints. I will complain about the script, though. There are moments of good dialogue in the film, but then there are passages that are so stiff and cliche ridden as to make even a B-movie connoisseur blush, like the "culture medium" quote of my title, a passage which got more convoluted (and full of improperly used scientific terms) as the scene progressed, although Billy Burke did a decent job throughout the film, even with lines this silly.

There are a few extras, such as a "Making of Komodo" short, which accounts for a one star deduction in my rating. The Director, Michael Lantieri (a special effects wizard) seems like a nice guy with a good grasp of filmmaking, but the Producers seem really self-important and pompous. First, Executive Producer Devesh Chetty makes the assertion that the film is not a creature feature, but is a sophisticated psychological thriller, and then Producer Tony Ludwig has the nerve to say "It's probably close to what Hitchcock had always liked to do." Uh, no. It is not at all what Hitchcock ever did or aspired to do. Get real.

There is another documentary on komodos and on the computer generation process (called "Maximum Fear") which was fairly interesting. Also included is a photo gallery, cast biographies, a game of some sort (which I did not look at), a trivia game, and a "Komodo Facts" section. In other words, there are a lot of extras for a B-movie DVD.

Although this movie is totally implausible (komodos don't live in South Carolina, and most biologists don't know how to fly a helicopter) and has a very uneven script the actors are generally good, and for fans of monster movies, it is decent, mindless entertainment. I would have given the film four stars without the self-important commentary from the Producers in the extras.

2 out of 5 stars Good special affects. Bad movie........2004-08-22

I gotta give this movie credit. The special affects WERE pretty decent, especially for this line of film-making. The CG models of the komodos were well done, particularly the way the skin folded as the legs moved, and the way the scales shined against the light. Also, the puppets they used were pretty nifty, complete with saliva!

But still...this was a pretty bad movie. Hungry komodos kill the father, mother, and dog of a young boy because an oil company is depriving them of their natural food. Years later two psychiatrists bring him back to the island to help him recover from his post-traumatic stress disorder. Guess who hasn't moved since the boy left?

One thing that really got me about this movie was the stupid writing. Sometimes it was half-decent, but when it was bad, it was bad. The ferryman says, "They were a nice family. They had a dog." to which the shrink says, "What do you mean?" In a later scene the other shrink is being pulled down into a hole by a komodo, so her friend grabs her arm and PULLS (yeah, there's a smart idea - King Solomon where are you?) while saying, "Come on!" What do you mean "Come one"!?! She's wounded and being pulled on her leg by a komodo. She can't do any thing!

You know how she got wounded by the way? She heard a strange, animal-like noise outside the house...now if this happened to me, I would either A) shrug it off and go watch TV, or B) peek out the windows and make sure all the locks were secure. She instead goes OUTSIDE the house and says, "Who's there?" She deserved what came to her.

By the way, I love how they say the komodos were just "dropped off" on the island. Komodos live on the islands around Papa New Guinea. Who the heck would take a komodo and just take them around the world and dump them on a random island? "Ha! My friends in Maine will love this pet komodo I got for them! Awe darn, he got bigger along the way, guess I'll have to drop him off."

The film got some points from me for developing its characters the first thirty minutes and having good affects, but sadly it gets cliche in the last hour or so. The villain is, of course, a corporate villain who kills people off to save a few greens. Quite a remarkable accent for a villain too - he sounds like any moment he's gonna burst out with "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains." If you like this sort of thing, you might be interested, but see it as a bad movie only.

4 out of 5 stars Move over Andaconda.......2004-08-11

This has got to be one of the best horror movies since Critters. In Komodo some Komdo dragon eggs are dumped on an island by an oil company. Unfortunately the eggs hatch. The environment is posioned by drilling.

20 year later a family moves into the island. That night the Komodos attack and devour all the family except for the on boy. The boy is terrified.

A local pyschologist wanting to cure the boy takes him back to the island. The killings begin again. If you like this movie I recomend Andaconda, Pyhon, Phyon 2 and Anadacondas, Crocodile, Crodile 2, Alligator, Alligator 2 the Mutation, Boa, King Cobra, Python VS Boa and Curse of the Komodo.

5 out of 5 stars not a graphich as the pyhton triology but still good.......2007-04-25

This movie is supposed to be somewhat of a sequel to curse of the Komudo according to other reviews I read about it. Most of the people gave it real bad the most they gave was a 3. These people aparently did not grow up watching all the classic by movies especially al the Anaconda rips of. Why thise movie might not be as graphic as the R rated snake movies such as boa versuss pyhton it still has a decent action seuqence thenomial acting. More guns going of than at the battle of Gettysburg. This movie has some mild creature violence people getting eatten getting crused to death occasional stuff like that. As a result this movie might not be appropriate or may be questionable to kids under the age of thirteen depending on what there parent or guardians think is appropriate for some one there age. there is one midly gore part with leeches and a komdo blowing up aftert it swallows a gernade there is barely any gore in this movie. If you like this I also recommend you see the python movies. For those of you that saw lake placid a movie studio has shoot a sequel to lake placid called lake placid 2 which will air this saturday at 9:00 PM Florida time and and get done around 11:00 PM florida times scifi channel has alot more commerical break compared to that of cartoon network and other chanels and scifi channels commerical breaks tend to be very length usually about 4 to 6 minutes per break and they have on average about once every ten to 20 minutes. Those you that are interested rent this at blockbuster and watch lake placid 2 this Saturday evening on Scifi channel. A word of advice if buy this dvd used don not buy it in new mint or like mint conditon or new conditon get in like new condition if possibloe because if its in better condition than like new it can be pricy it can cost about $22 to $40 for one copy of this if it has been taken care of well enough and the person does not know what a resonable selling price for its is or is trying to get more money than what it's worth.

2 out of 5 stars Laughing vs. Cringing.......2007-02-09

Well, first off, it's pretty obvious that the marketers for this less than good film thought that they could capitalize on the success of Alien vs. Predator. With the "snazzy" KVC on the disc. I hate to tell them, but the film is mis-named as it is. It's really a bunch of bad actors vs. bad CGI of a komodo dragon and a cobra. Who wins, who loses? Well, the viewer loses. That's for sure.

The aforementioned bad actors run around, alternately going after the monsters and running for their lives. They shoot countless bullets, including maybe 30 or so from a 15-round magazine gun...this happens more than once. I can't really complain about that, though. We see inaccuracies like that all the time.

Anyway, overall a pretty bad movie. Only a few interesting scenes. And I believe Michael Pare was asleep for most of the filming.

1 out of 5 stars oh.........my...........god..................2007-01-06

this movie is sssssssssssssssssssooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad every time some 1 swears this ridiculous "squak" sound attemps 2 cut it out and since this is a (completly stupid) seequal 2 "curse of the komodo" they got some of the origonal actors from "COTK" (curse of the komodo)and got them 2 play different characters in "kvc" (komodo vs cobra)!!!!!!!!!!!They also stole lines and scenes from "COTK". The actors spend half the time shooting at the monsters ( witch look ssssssssooooooo fake)when they should be running away!!!!!!!!! It doesent even connect with "COTK" THIS FILM SHOULD BE RATED "R" FOR RIDICULOUS, OR SHOULD COME WITH A WARNING LABLE SAYING , WARNING: EXTREMLY CRAPPY!!!!!AVOID AT ALL COSTS !!!! AVOID!!AVOID!! AVOID!!

3 out of 5 stars Its ok, ill give it that..........2006-12-27

Well, giving this film as much credit it deserves, i say it gets about a D average. Some acting good, most bad. The CGI on the snake was... well, suprisingly acceptable, but they didn't get the komodo down very well. The feet on the komodo dragon looked so stupid... the toes didn't move at all through the whole thing... but, what do you expect.
But hell, at least the cover looks cool for a DVD collection, i say check this one out if you have a high toleration for bad acting and cgi effects, you just might enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Silly Sequel.......2006-11-06

An environmentalist group has learned of animal testing being done on a remote island near Bora Bora. They bring a journalist, hire a boat, and set out to investigate with the idea of exposing the unethical treatment of the animals. They get more than they bargained for when they discover that the experiments have created giant Komodo dragons (although only one shows up for the big battle) and a giant cobra.

They soon link up with the lone survivor of the research team and learn the whole story of what is going on. Meanwhile the military is learning about what is going on and are trying to put a lid on things and hush it up. Monsters, civilians, and a military coverup. Put them all together and you just have to sit and see who survives and just what happens to those who don't. The ending is a little better than I was expecting but the title battle was very disappointing (much different than in Boa vs Python where the point was to get one to defeat the other).

This is a semi sequel to Curse of the Komodo. The storyline mostly follows the earlier movie and uses some of the same sets. However, the Komodo lizards look quite different and some of the original cast returns in all-new rolls. This can make things a little confusing at first. Also we now have a giant cobra (don't know how it got on the island). This cobra seems to live underwater. Not only that, sometimes it is in fresh water and sometimes in salt water. This is a silly film. In one scene, one of the characters decides the way to defend against bullet-proof monsters is to carry a length of bamboo. But as silly as it is there is some charm to this. Maybe it lies in anticipation of how bad it will be. Anyway, the title should put you in the right expectation for this film. If you want a silly monster film you could certainly do worse.

1 out of 5 stars ARACHNIA meets LAKE PLACID.......2006-05-01

Just one geneticly engineered komodo dragon goes around a small island attacking people, either eating them or turning them into zombies (I'm being completely serious here).

There's almost no gore, below average acting, writing, and special effects, and some uncalled for, not to mention out-of-place, nudity.

Stay away if you don't want to bring yourself 92 minutes closer to death. Life is too short for cruddy movies like this.

1 out of 5 stars I want my 92 minutes back!.......2005-05-31

Absolutely the worst plot - OK, maybe tied with Solarbabies as the worst plot ever.

So let's get this straight. You're a genetic scientist, you get your secret governmental funding from some upstart Navy commander who pays for your project out of petty cash and that empty coffee can next to the bottled water, you create giant carnivores to feed the world, left your daughter trapped on a deserted island with afore mention beasts for a meeting that you could have used your 1920's era two way radio for, power the "electric fence" and your only defense with a Honda generator the size of a shoebox, just happen to keep extra guns and explosives in that old shack a few miles away, know how to assembly any weapon but cant hit the broad side of a barn, just happen to keep some grain alcohol on hand for those downtrodden commando helicopter pilots that stop by for brunch, and you cant wait to sacrifice yourself to save the love of your life.

Right...... It all becomes so clear now.

2 out of 5 stars Smells of Elderberries..........2005-05-13

This film stinks, there is just no way around it. Nonetheless, I had to give it two stars for incredible creativity in the face of overwhelming adversity. Truly, this is an amalgam of about five different concepts all put together in a blender. The plots concern (in rough order of importance): a military operation headed by a brilliant scientist and his daughter/niece (there seems some confusion on that point in the script) to grow giant komodo dragons the size of school buses alternately for military operations or as a food source to feed the world's hungry (Ponder.); a bunch of dimwitted casino robbers who serve to chew the scenery and in turn be chewed by the komodos; a government conspiracy plot having to do with bombing civilians; a couple of would-be love stories that go exactly nowhere; and a confusing object lesson about the importance of good transmission maintenance in helicopters.

Of course this mostly takes place on a deserted island inhabited by CGI lizards, and takes us past brief glimpses of beautiful waterfalls and pointless nudity that is so utterly predictable, yet illogical, as to be totally laughable. The computer generated lizards aren't the worst I have seen, honestly; and to be frank, some of the acting isn't too bad (I'm thinking of the scientist and the helicopter pilot here.)

The film is entertaining in a silly, B-movie manner. It is really not high in production values (I am especially fond of the use of obvious stock footage and sticks with lights on them representing an electric fence) but is fun in a quirky, schlocky kind of way.

1 out of 5 stars Curse of the Cheap Knockoff.......2005-01-13

Fake blondes, fake boobs, fake broad--and a realistic-looking reptile that's treated so unrealistically that the characters appear to be shooting at a theme-park dinosaur! Thousands of rounds are blasted at the behemoth without it sustaining a single nick. The firing goes on and on, as though the director is struggling to fill an allotted time frame. (Other snail-paced sequences include a bra-less, cavorting babe and a macho mesmerized by an overflying aircraft while a copter offers a quick sprint to survival.) The viewer's sympathies are bound to veer toward the beast, which somehow manages to gulp down the hapless without squirting out a drop of blood. And then there's the germ-zapped zombies who pop up like actors who stumbled onto the wrong set. The creators of this miserable flick should have let the mostly competent actors simply ad lib the whole production. Then, no doubt, the audience would have been spared the absurdity of an is-something-wrong? line in the midst of a life-or-death debacle!

1 out of 5 stars UGGGH!!!!.......2004-09-07

"Night of the Komodo" poses quite a few questions to the viewer, like what is the bigger thing in this movie, the Komodo, or the breast implants adorning the female stars, or could it be the false eyelashes also found on our damsels in distress? Another question posed; is red an actual eye color? The hero/head casino robber/muscle bound star looks like he just finished toking up before each scene and his eyes were the bloodiest part of this lame flick. The storyline is assinine, a doctor supposedly trying to create giant food, mistakenly creates these giant Komodo dragons instead, chalk that one up in the ooops column. I should have known better than to buy this turkey, but it was only $2 used, so once again I was subjected to a direct to video, "hey guys I borrowed my brother's camcorder let's go make a movie", lame excuse for a film. You know your in trouble when the movie begins and it's shot on video and not film!!! Avoid this thing at all cost!

    Description

"Exploring Bali and Komodo" is an educational and entertaining DVD about the culture of Bali, its marine life, the Komodo Dragon, and a dive voyage to the island of Komodo. This DVD gives you a glimpse of an exotic part of Indonesia. Bali has long been considered one of the world's most beautiful and fascinating places. Touring Bali visit many Hindu temples including the Bat Cave Temple full of Fruit Bats, the Mother Temple complex at Besakih, the Elephant Cave at Goa Gajah, the classical Pengumuman Temple, and the Temple at Sebatu with its holy springs. Tour the Justice Building befor enjoying a Barong Dance. This is a traditional dance between good and bad.

Because Bali is an island, scuba diving is a popular sport with a number of exciting dive sites around the island. On the northwest coast, where the ferry comes in from Java, you will find Secret Bay. This sandy-muddy bottom is home to a number of small marine creatures and a haven for photographers. At Tulamben, experience a variety of diving from a wreck to a wall dive just off shore. Other dive sites include Padang Bay, Blue Lagoon and Nusa Penida.

From Bali take a dive voyage on a sailing ship to Komodo to see the Komodo Dragon up close and personal. There is plenty of marine life to see with identification and descriptions along the way.

For anyone looking for a travel documentary about Bali and Komodo (which I thought this was) don't waste your money on this DVD. It is about 5% good and 95% boring underwater photography narrated by an older gentleman who speaks in a monotone ramble. The background music starts off just fine with some Gamelan music, but it gets horrible later when the bad elevator music with gratuitous guitar solos start. The only thing remotely redeemable about this DVD are some of the sea creatures, like sea slugs that are filmed. In fact this movie should be re-titled "Old man talks about sea slugs with bad music in background"

        5 out of 5 stars Komodo.......2006-03-27
