If Species 3 lacks the star power of its previous incarnations - mostly notably Natasha Henstridge, whose participation here is relegated to a cameo - the movie succeeds in delivering lean, mean B-movie thrills by paring down the franchise's premise to its most exploitable elements - copious nudity and gore. Henstridge's voracious alien/human hybrid Eve dies gruesomely in the film's opening moments, but not before giving birth to an infant, who is rescued by a college professor (Robert Knepper) and grows into the pulchritudinous form of Sunny Mabrey. Unfortunately, she proves to be her mother's daughter in every way by setting out to mate with--and kill--any male unlucky enough to cross her path. While a definite step down in terms of plot and performance quality, Species 3 has glimpses of atmosphere and suspense in addition to the blood and skin shows, and makes good use of H.R. Giger's unsettlingly sensuous creature design, which should please franchise fans, gore hounds, and omnivorous sci-fi viewers. --Paul Gaita

The natural beauties of Florida find some young champions in Hoot, based on the young adult novel by satirical crime writer Carl Hiaasen. While trying to resist being bullied on the school bus, Roy (Logan Lerman, Jack & Bobby) becomes intrigued by a barefoot boy running frantically along the sidewalk. As he investigates, Roy learns that a nearby construction site is a habitat for a protected species of burrowing owl and that a tough girl at his school named Beatrice (Brie Larson, Sleepover) has some connection with the barefoot boy, who has some connection with vandalism at the construction site. Hoot has been attacked by conservative critics for promoting eco-terrorism--a charge most viewers may find overheated--but the movie's real weakness isn't political but artistic; the clumsy dialogue barely sounds like human speech and the plot takes some hard-to-believe turns. At one point, as part of protecting the burrowing owls and their chicks, a kid releases poisonous cottonmouth snakes onto the construction site; apparently his ecological knowledge doesn't include the feeding habits of these snakes, which eat birds. The colorful scenery and the affable presence of Luke Wilson (Bottle Rocket, Old School) keep the movie alive. Also featuring Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Holes) and singer Jimmy Buffett, whose tropical honky-tonk bubbles up all over the soundtrack. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Walden Media (The Chronicles of Narnia franchise) and based on the best-selling book, Hoot is a classic story that is fun for all ages. When a boy and his classmates realize that a population of endangered, burrowing owls is threatened by new construction, the kids decide to take on crooked politicians and bumbling cops in the hope of saving their new friends.

fun movie for kids and adults. humorous, educational, kids get to triumph over environmental trashers, appealing leads. a relief to find an intelligent movie we can enjoy together that is neither insipid nor loaded with the usual bad language, nudity, violence. hope more of carl hiaasen's books go the movie route.

4 out of 5 stars Kiddie Conservation.......2007-04-28

"Hoot" tells the story of three unlikely heroes, Roy, Bea, and Mullet Fingers (Logan Lerman, Brie Larson, and Cody Linley, respectively), who attempt to thwart the construction of a new pancake house in Florida on land that is inhabited by federally-protected burrowing owls. Young Roy has just moved to Florida with his family from Montana. As is with most tween-aged tales, he's an outcast who gets bullied, picked on, etc. Through a series of funny events he becomes good friends with the bully who bullies bullies, Beatrice, and her tree-hugging brother, Mullet Fingers. Up until the point where the three begin working together, Mullet Fingers has done the bulk of the dirty work at the jobsite by sabotaging contractor Curly's (Tim Blake Nelson) survey stakes, releasing cottonmouths on the property, and a few other things. When Roy enters the picture, evidence is uncovered that will shut down the construction completely. Of course, the main problem is that they are just three kids. Who'll listen to them?

As the story rolls along we get to meet "buffoon-in-blue" Delinko (gamely played by Luke Wilson) and Roy's cool science teacher, Mr. Ryan (Jimmy Buffett). Robert Wagner shows up in a brief but funny role as the city mayor. The cameras also give us a healthy dose of Florida's beautiful beaches and the swamp and her creatures that Mullet Fingers loves so much.

Some have stated that this movie promotes eco-terrorism and they do have a little bit of an honest gripe. What Mullet Fingers does is illegal, but so is what the pancake house is attempting to do. Both sides are wrong in the matter, but Roy's use of the legal system shows the viewer that stealing dozer seats and tearing out specific pages of a document eventually prove to be empty ventures. In short, eco-terrorism ideals are present, but they are shown to not be the solution to the problem.

Unlike a few other reviewers here, I'm glad that the owls received only a little screen time. This only enhanced the fact that they are endangered and worth protecting.

Overall, the movie does a good job of entertaining the entire family. It is somewhat generic as far as tweener tales go, but it is very likeable as a whole. I think I caught only one or two brief slips of the tongue in the whole movie. There's only a little onscreen violence involving a bully and Roy and some hilarious offscreen violence involving Bea and the same bully. The film has plenty of laughs for all ages and the cast does a pretty good job with their respective roles. Families should have no problems watching this one together.

5 out of 5 stars HOOT IS GREAT FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT.......2007-03-31

I WAS THRILLED TO SEE A MOVIE THAT WAS JUST LIKE READING THE BOOK! IT WAS FUN & LIGHTHEARTED WITH AN UNDERCURRENT OF ENVIRONMENTALISM. A TRULY ENJOYABLE FILM. HATS OFF TO CARL FOR A WONDERFULLY ENTERTAINING FAMILY MOVIE!

5 out of 5 stars A good movie.......2007-03-13

This is a delightful family film. Some youths fight to keep a Pancake house from being built over the nesting site of protected burrowing owls. One of the boys, Mullet, has already had trouble and must hide from sight while still trying to prevent the construction from taking place. There's plenty of humor thrown in with this serious theme. I especially love seeing Jimmy Beffet play a teacher! He did a wonderful acting job.

It's only a marginal improvement, but Dr. Dolittle 2 defies the odds by rising above its popular 1998 predecessor (and once again, let's not confuse these movies with the earlier Rex Harrison musical). Eddie Murphy cakewalks through his title role with the confident professionalism of a comedian who knows when to share the spotlight--especially when he's being upstaged by a bunch of animals who steal all the punch lines. And once again the movie's aimed at a preteen audience, so many of those punch lines involve flatulence, bodily functions, and frequent use of the word butt.

The difference this time: Dr. Dolittle has settled into his talk-to-the-animals routine; his 16-year-old daughter (Raven-Symone) is getting to be a feisty handful (it turns out she's coping with a hereditary gift); and his lawyer wife (Kristen Wilson) is representing him in a trial against corporate villains who want to clear-cut a local forest. Naturally, the local critter mafia (their Don is a beaver... fugeddaboutit!) want Dolittle to fight for their cause, and this involves the successful mating of an endangered bear and a domesticated circus bear who's forgotten all the bear necessities of life in the wild. The bears are voiced by Lisa Kudrow and Steve Zahn, and they almost steal the show, but the whole menagerie (with digitally animated "talking") is equally amusing. Adults might wish that the filmmakers had tried harder to make a truly memorable sequel, but this is a movie for kids, and they're going to love it without quibbling. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Doolittle does it again!.......2006-07-13

We loved the first movie, so when the 2nd came out, it had a lot to live up to. It was as hysterical as the first... very well done! A "must" have!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original! Eddie Murphey at his best!.......2006-05-05

Eddie Murphey is truly the doctor, the doctor of comedy that is! This is the series to see if you need to laugh, if you love to laugh even! I was watching these because I like Raven-Symone (she plays one of his daughters). Raven-Symone is from Disney Channel's "That's So Raven". Also, the animal voices, many of them are very familiar (like Chris Rock and Cedric the Entertainer). If you like one and two, then you might want to check out "Dr. Doolittle 3". No, it does not feature Eddie Murphey unfortunately. However, this movie is the doctor for your comedy ills!

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Dolittle 2.......2005-11-02

The movie "Dr.Dolitle" was a movie directed by Steve Carr which both childen and adults will like it.It was a very interesting movie because a doctor call Dolittle was able to communicate with animals.
Dr.Dolittle had to make a type of endangered bear to give birth in order to save the forest where many types of species of animalss lived in. But at first, the male bear was anti-social not romantic and do not know how to survive in the wild, it was very playful and likes to sing songs which sounded terrible. So it was long before they began to fall for each other, as the female bear was actually attached.
The movie was very funny when the male bear was climbing on a broken tree branch, which had a bee hive. He just wanted to fulfil the female bear's wish in being a courageous bear. Dr. Dolittle advised him not to climb.Andwhen the bear reached the top,the bees in the hive stinged them.
Overall, I would give the movie 3 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Cute! Very Cute!.......2005-03-21

I suppose this was not as entertaining as the first Dr.Dolittle but we certainly enjoyed it. Haven't you ever wondered what animals would say if they could talk? It's always fun to imagine that and as with the first you get to hear them.
It's funny and I liked the bears; I thought they were adorable.
The acting was good, as was the storyline and bringing in some human interest, such as problems with the doctors daughter was great. All in all we enjoyed this movie and think you will as well.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing.......2005-02-20

I love Eddie Murphy, and I loved Dr. Doolittle! The previews of Dr. D II looked so funny, I couldn't wait to see it. Well, I just saw it, and my mind has still not recovered.

Dr. Doolittle 2 is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The story and dialouge are so mind-numbing, even the animated Murphy and Raven Symone, who plays his teenage daughter, couldn't salvage it. The story revolves around Dr. Doolittle trying to save the patch of forest behind his house from a land-hungry developer. To do this, Doolittle must rehab a tame bear and make him wild, because this bear is an endangered species, and if he lives in the forest, the developer can't touch it. Sounds kind of cute . . . it's not.

The bear acts and sounds like a washed up Vegas lounge singer. His whiny voice (Steve Zahn) is so annoying that even I, a passionate animal lover, could not summon a shred of sympathy for this bear. And talk about long. This whole thin storyline is dragged out for ninety minutes until I writhed in pain. And the other animals! A sad, alcoholic French monkey, a chamelon with a horrible Mexican accent, and an abusive bear and his passive female bear. When the bear is not whining, a dog is narrating the whole film in another nasal, bland voice with HORRIBLE dialouge.

A subplot involves his daughter rebelling and liking a boyfriend who is a complete idiot, is dropped off by a pizza delivery car and asks to stay two nights. Murphy actually acquieses. What an intelligent, lovely girl like Raven would see in this sorry homie is completely unbelievable.

It is hard to believe people (and animals) are going hungry when millions were wasted on this fart of a film. It seemed like the voice actors were embarrased to be saying such stupid dialouge, and that the animal actors were embarrased to be acting such stupid roles - and I don't blame them.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great, Sci-Fi Movie Trilogy.......2007-04-05

If crazed scientists and unrealistic plot lines combined with great special effects are your bag, then the Species Trilogy is worth your while. H.R. Giger designed the alien and the special effects are done realistically. Very little CGI stuff here so the Species flicks look like real movies, not glorified cartoons.

The first movie, Species is a pretty decent film. The cast is somewhat of a mixed bag. Hack actor Michael Madsen is cast as the government fixer. Forest Whitaker, an up and coming actor provides a sympathetic figure. The always great Ben Kingsley provides some great one-liners to lighten things up a bit. Natasha Henstridge gives the best performance of her career as a genetically engineered "human" beauty. This is a fun flick.

Species II is a continuation of the story with a somewhat higher level of acting and scientifically implausible script. The special effects even better than in the first. This is a rare sequel that is even better than the original.

Species III is the worst of the trilogy. It provides a poor finish to the trilogy's story and the movie as a whole is awful. The producers opted for cheap actors and even worse special effects. The script takes what was already a scientifically implausible scenario and brings it past the point where the suspension of disbelief ends.

As a whole, this is a moderately worthwhile trilogy in that it does offer some mindless escapism and unintentional laughs. Its best to rent out one of the Species flicks first before deciding on whether or not to buy the trilogy as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Mad scientist, aliens & eye candy.......2007-01-29

STOP! If the title of this review sounds bad, stop reading and find a serious movie. However, if science running amok, aliens and eye candy sound like fun read on. Species is a three movie set with a filler DVD of maybes. H.R. Giger did the design of the alien and the special effects while not great by today's standards are very good.

The first move, SPECIES is the best of the group. The cast is excellent actors, all being second leads or the starts buddy. Michael Madsen, a great tuff guy actor, is the government fixer. Forest Whitaker, one of America's best actors, is the empathy. Ben Kingsley, always an excellent performance, feeds Madsen some great one-liners. Natasha Henstridge provides the eye candy as the alien driven to reproduce. For the type of film, this is a five-star movie and great fun.

SPECIES II was released three years later, with Michael Madsen, Marg Helgenberger and Natasha Henstridge, repeating their roles from the first film. The producers continued to cast top quality actors in almost all the roles. The story is a continuation of the first movie with a couple of new twists. The dialog starts to slip and gore is used as a substitute. The special effects are above average, with the ending making the movie. This is a three or four-star film depending on how much you liked the first film.

SPECIES III was released nine years after the first film. While providing a continuation of and ending to the story, the film is a cheap knock off production. The producers stopped using quality character actors and went with inexpensive. The dialog drops badly and the story line has real problems with reality. However, they do answer questions raised in Species II and that makes it worth watching. This is a two or three-star movie depending on how much you like the first two.

Is the series worth it? Yes, if you like movies with mad scientist, aliens & eye candy. Overall, I rate this three and a half stars, which Amazon rounds up to four.

3 out of 5 stars Species Trilogy held great potential, but failed to realize it. .......2006-03-25

The entire trilogy of "Species" held such a tremendous potential to be a great sci-fi set of films, and go down in sci-fi history as one of the greats of all time. But, the screen writers, director, and producers instead went for flash-in-the-pan sensationalizm and totally forgot about putting any real effort into the "sci" of sci-fi. There were so many self-made contradictions within the story line, and outright anti-scientific foolishness, that these errors almost totally destroyed the films' worth. The saving grace of the films is that the storyline - as hard as the makers of these films tried to trash it - still came through as moderately entertaining, and the female nudity in the films was indeed exquisite; some of the absolute best female nudity you will ever see in any film. These two factors saved it from being a "1", and boosted the films to getting a 3 star rating from me. It's a good set of films to have on in the TV room during a party, but for "great" movie entertainment, you'll have to look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Hot alien love does not a good movie make..........2005-09-17

The Species trilogy is arguably one of the worst franchises ever. The films all follow the exact same premise: there's an ultra-hot alien babe with a sex drive that would put rabbits to shame, and she's running around trying to screw every man she meets. You have to wonder what lonely pizza-faced eighth-grader came up with this garbage, or what pot-smoking Hollywood big-shot decided that it should be done another two times. Actually, Species 3 isn't completely horrible. The main character in that one is slightly interesting, and the movie's emphasis is much less on the hot alien sex.

species 3 is the best in the series. sexy and exciting and with a great story. cant wait for number 4.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the series.......2006-09-08

This is the best of the trilogy. I believe this is a straight to video release but it is better than the usual of its ilk. The main reason being Ameilia Cooke's gas station scene.....

2 out of 5 stars Just not very interesting.......2006-05-20

So this time we've got a new alien, played by Sunny Mabrey. She's being raised by a college professor who spirited her away from the government just after the end of the last movie. But there are also half-breed aliens, and they want to mate with her because their genes are all screwed up and they're dying from a whole host of diseases. When one of them shows up at the college professor's office and dies, he calls in help from a brilliant grad student. Soon, the alien starts to have "feelings" for this student, and the half-breed aliens attack.

This just wasn't terribly interesting, even for a direct-to-video movie. The story didn't have much forward momentum to it and the conclusion was fairly unsatisfying. The inclusion of the half-breed aliens didn't really serve any purpose except to put a stumbling block in front of the professor and his little science project. As far as the characters, the hot babe alien didn't have any emotions, so that pretty much wrote her out of the story. The professor and his student were just not very well developed and din't have any sort of personality traits that separated them from any other generic movie character. The whole thing left me uninterested. The worst part was there didn't seem to be any point to the story - what was the professor trying to do with the alien? This was never made clear, so when it wasn't successful, well, who cares?

Considering all the attention given to this being "unrated", it really didn't have any more gore or nudity than an average R rated movie.

3 out of 5 stars Let's Try It Again.......2005-11-29

First there was Sil. Then we had her duplicate Eve. Now we have Eve's daughter Sara. Sara is closer to alien than her predecessors and is the charge of a university professor. He is trying to analyze her DNA and create and even more perfect creation. We also have a number of Hybrids (although Sil, Eve and Sara are also hybrids) who have agendas of their own.

As Sara matures her need to breed kicks in but she is unique and needs another with her level of alieness. The professor takes on a student researcher to assist in his plans. Although it is easy to learn from past mistakes, it is not easy to predict new ones and things begin to get out of hand. Soon there are bodies to be hidden and aliens to deal with as well as the government once they manage to find out what is going on.

This one lacks the feeling and menace of the earlier films and is far more upbeat. It is a different story from the first two and there is no explanation for the proliferation of the hybrids. All in all it is not what one would look for if you wanted more of the same. While different in many ways there is still good alien action and plenty of nudity like the original. But if you want a development and not just a continuation, then you might really enjoy this one. With a young protagonist this one should appeal to a different audience.

5 out of 5 stars Best out of the 3, so far..........2005-10-26

I like this movie best out of the Species trilogy. It was well written and paced. This is also the best "college" movie I have seen as well - no cheese here. The movie has humorous takes on the general misunderstandings and misconceptions that exist between women and men, parents and teen-agers, teachers and students.

For good "alien" entertainment, watch this, so long as you don't mind some cheesy gross special effects...

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars LIKE FATHER...LIKE DAUGHTER..........2006-10-26

This is a moderately entertaining film that is fun for the whole family. It features Eddie Murphy as Dr. Dolittle, reprising his original role. This time Dr. Doolittle displays an interest in environmental issues, as he tries to save the forest by playing matchmaker between Ava, a bear in the wild, and Archie, a circus bear who has gotten soft and is trying to get used to living in the wild. Ultimately, Dr. Dolittle is victorious over the corporate expansionists who sought to decimate the forest.

There are some very amusing moments with the animals. There are also some funny moments as Dr. Dolittle tries to cope with his sixteen year old daughter just being a teenager. Much to his delight and surprise, however, it turns out that she appears to have inherited his unique ability to communicate with animals. Still, this film is simply not as good as the prequel.

This DVD provides picure perfect visuals, as well as excellent sound. The disc also has some nice extra features, such as a kid's guide to grizzlies and the director's commentary. This is a value packed DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Wow, how did MST 3000 miss this one.......2005-02-20

This movie must have been a tax write off. It was cheap. The acting was so bad it was almost funny. The CGI FX were ok. The plot and story were laughable. I liked goofing on this movie. Make sure your drinking when you watch this.
This is just a bad movie.

5 out of 5 stars what an actress!!!!.......2005-01-17

first of all, this movie ROCKS! aliens and intrigue, screaming and a professor--what more could you want?! and the acting is fantastic!

1 out of 5 stars stupid aliens.......2004-01-04

wow i know this is not a high budget film but god this thing is pathetic the aliens are stupid the people are retarded and the end is a pile of garbage...to be continued in alien species 2.... but oh wait this thing was a pile of crap so they didn't make one..if your going to buy this be prepared to laugh at how pathetic it is.

5 out of 5 stars Two good movies at a great price!.......2002-09-19

The 'Editorial Reviews' section above describes the 2 movies, so I'd just like to add that this DVD also contains 2 old 'Casper the Friendly Ghost' cartoons and a DVD dictionary that can be downloaded.
I have 'Moon of the Wolf' on laser disk and was hoping it would come out on DVD, so it was an extra treat to get 'Alien Species' thrown in as well. If you like science fiction/horror movies you'll find that these 2 movies are suspenseful and quite enjoyable.
Besides, you can't beat the price!
