Description
Once upon a time, the Big Bad Bomb was #1 on everyone's Paranoid Hit Parade. Atom-bomb movies were made to scare us; atom-bomb short subjects were meant to calm us down. Now you can relive some of that Mushroom-Cloud Mania with this Nuclear Collection of Atomic-Age Kulture. Just hope you don't end up glowing in the dark... "Atomic War Bride" (1960, 75 min.) - At a church in the country, eternally optimistic John marries Maria, his Atomic War Bride, as planes buzz overhead and bombs start dropping. Though John is "mobilized" by the military seconds after the ceremony, he and Maria are reunited just in time for the Big Bang. "This Is Not a Test" (1961, 72 min.) - When the police radio blares, "Air Raid! Condition Red! This is Not a Test," Deputy Sheriff Dan Colter sets up a roadblock on a lonely section of mountain road in the middle of the night as he and a microcosm of American society wait for the bomb by engaging in various end-of-the-world activities.

In the salad days of nuclear-weapons testing, the United States detonated 331 atomic, hydrogen, and thermonuclear bombs. Many of those explosions appear in Trinity and Beyond, which utilizes a lot of declassified footage, most of it in color. Standouts include the United States' South Pacific detonation of an atom bomb 90 feet below the water to study the effects on a fleet of ships. Surprise, surprise, they sink! If that wasn't enough, the navy also loaded the decks with sheep to study the effects of the blast on life forms. Surprise, surprise, they die! Glowing leg of lamb anyone? This film will alternately amuse and horrify you at the rampant irresponsibility of the Soviets and Americans in their quest for nuclear domination. The Russians have the honor of having detonated the largest nuclear bomb ever at a whopping 58 megatons. The Hiroshima bomb was barely a kiloton. Of course, after the U.S. and Russia ceased their activities, the Chinese decided to get in on the act. But that's a different story for a different documentary. --Kristian St. Clair

In this special 60th Anniversary Diamond Edition, renowned special effects filmmaker Peter Kuran (Star Wars, Star Trek II & V, Robocop) offers up amazing film footage chronicling the top secret, strange and visually compelling history of the design, production and testing of Atomic Hydrogen bombs by the United States. With the development and use of award-winning new film restoration systems, Kuran has perfectly preserved these haunting images for generations to come.

Narrated by William Shatner (Boston Legal, Star Trek), Trinity & Beyond features extremely rare film segments from top secret government archives and startling footage of nuclear bomb tests conducted by Great Britain and China, plus the largest atomic explosion ever created by Russia, and de-classified U.S. footage released to the public as recent as May, 2006. Whether being exploded under the ocean, suspended by a balloon, shot from a cannon or even detonated in space, these weapons are capable of devastating destruction - the quality of these images is as startling as are remarkable.

With new footage shot with hi-definition cameras, this award-winning production also features an amazing explosion segment that must be seen with 3D glasses to truly take in its full impact. 5 out of 5 stars More than bombs..........2007-02-23

This was a very interesting movie. It not only gives the historical development of atomic/thermonuclear weaponry, but presents it all within the context of the Arms Race and the Cold War. As I grew up nearing the end of the Cold War, this movie helped me gain some perspective on the cultural context of my youth. I had told my 25 year-old coworker about this movie and he said, "Cold War? What's that??" It's a very fascinating movie on many levels. There are two or three other movies in this series, but this is the place to start.

Grace and peace,
Jeffrey

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-09-04

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I would reccomend it to anyone. I had only one complaint and that was about the footage of some of the bombs exploding. They would use music or shots of the earth's surface coming closer and it would tense up until the exact second the bomb exploded. It was kind of unexpected. A good example is the shot of the first thermo-nuclear bomb the U.S. detonated. I would have liked to see the explosion starting from before it actually exploded, kind of like a simulation of a live viewing. Instead they throw it right into your face unexpectedly. It seems like a trick they used to make the movie more exciting, but somehow it doesn't work. They also showed the names of the bomb exploding after it exploded. It would have been better had they showed the names before it blew up. It's like when you hear something explode and you barely turn around to see the explosion starting but you don't get a good chance to relax a bit and see where it is going to explode. Not all the shots were like this of course, but some of the good ones were. Of course the movie is about the history and about the amazing story of the bomb. With that note, it is a great movie, and everyone should watch it.

5 out of 5 stars NOT SOMETHING TO WATCH WHILE ONE IS EATING - - - -.......2006-04-19

- - - - THINKING HOWEVER WOULD BE IDEAL DURING VIEWING!

IN A NUTSHELL: ATOMIC BOMB TESTING = PRACTICE MAKES BIGGER YIELDS!

A very direct and comprehensive look at the era of nuclear testing by the United States, including all its component parts.

WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT: THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE COLD WAR'S MUNITIONS

This rather sobering documentary is organized in linear form. It begins, literally start at the beginning - "The Manhattan Project" [Einstein's letter to Roosevelt in 1938] and proceeds toward the end of this era - The First Real Treaty Banning Atmospheric Testing - by the United States and Soviet Union - 1963.

THE IN-BETWEEN = ATOMIC TESTING ON A WHOLESALE BASIS: 1945-1963

The film concentrates on the in-between, where 331 atmospheric nuclear tests were conducted by the United States. We see an expose of the progression and objectives of the tests, which sadly do include the effects of the atomic blasts on living things; pigs, sheep, rats. Not good for youngsters, but needed to give perspective to what is entailed in atomic testing on a wholesale basis.

There are frequent interviews with scientists, soldiers and newsreels too. Much of what is shown has only recently become declassified, and it is very simply though articulatly presented.

CONCLUSIONS: THAT IS FOR ALL OF 'US' TO DECIDE!

The conclusions are literally for us to decide [for a welcomed change] and this video will mean different things to different people, which is as it should be.

ABOUT THE VIDEO: YES - I WISH I HAD THE DVD - IT HAS EXTRA FEATURES -

But - - - I don't have the DVD. The VHS however, is excellent, and perhaps something like this is better received and digested on a less-is-more basis. If that is your thinking, this video, which most public libraries seem to have will do quite nicely. If you are buying this, it seems that the DVD and the interesting features it has, including the 3D effects, would be interesting.

BOTTOM LINE: NOT ENTERTAINMENT AND NOT FOR CHILDREN

Shatner's restrained narration and the incredibly well organized presentation of classified material, interviews and newsreels is literally in a class by itself. There's alot here, so be prepared for a long viewing, even without the extra DVD features.

This is a MUST movie for those who like this kind of history. The movie covers it all and much more. From the beginning to the end, it really is the Atomic Bomb Movie!

4 out of 5 stars intrguing & visually beautiful.......2005-12-06

Overall an excellent & informative film- visually stunning and well integrated, progressing through the history and politics of nuclear weapons. I thought from a scientific persepective, no one explained the phenomena seen- the various pressure waves, radiation aura, and condensation clouds and what causes them. Perhaps it would be less interesting to a non technical viever but after awhile, I found the stunning colors & clouds with symphonic music a little tiresome- perhaps some scientific explanation would be nice 'special feature' on the DVD. Overall though a worthwhile purchase.

The atomic bomb changed the world forever, and this wonderful film shows how Americans expressed wonder over atomic weapons and then suffered from the pervasive fear that America would be on the receiving end of a Soviet nuclear attack. Atomic Cafe is a brilliant compilation of archival film clips beginning with the first atomic bomb detonation in the New Mexico desert. The footage, much of it produced as government propaganda, follows the story of the bomb through the two atomic attacks on Japan that ended World War II to the bomb's central role in the cold war. Shown along with the famous "duck and cover" Civil Defense films are lesser-known clips, many of which possess a bizarre black humor when seen today, and it's easy to see why this film, which was produced in the early 1980s, became a cult classic sometimes referred to as the "nuclear Reefer Madness." Bellicose congressmen are shown advocating a freewheeling policy of nuclear strikes against China during the Korean War, suburban families are shown enjoying the comforts of their bomb shelters, and footage of a boy trying to bicycle to a bomb shelter in a "bomb survival suit" his father designed is priceless. Atomic Cafe is at once clever and poignant, a canny and offbeat look at a significant period in American history. --Robert J. McNamara

5 out of 5 stars Atomic Cafe.......2007-02-25

A great documentary (with a dark, ironic, humorous side) of American culture as shaped by the Cold War (paricularly 1950s and 1960s). I use parts of this in a class I teach, and the students love it. How can you go wrong with the Duck and Cover turtle song and the kid riding his bike in an oven mitt to protect against an unexpected blast?!

1 out of 5 stars Not funny .......2007-01-09

Yeah, those folks in the 50's sure were paranoid and gullible. Ha ha. How anyone could possibly think that the subject of nuclear holocaust and the fear thereof could be milked for a few laughs is pathetic. But even if this film was entirely based on a fictional threat the vast majority of its fitful stabs at humor require a deeper state of inebriation than I would care to endure.

5 out of 5 stars Frightenly funny.......2006-12-27

I saw "Atomic Cafe" when it first came out in 1982, and the film has lost none of its zip in the intervening years. The film is a montage of military and civilian footage of Americans attempting to deal with the destructive enormity of atomic power, overlain with the cheesiest A-bomb related period music. Starting with an interview with an unapologetic Paul Tibbetts (who flew the Enola Gay on its bombing run over Hiroshima) through the Nixon-Khrushchev "kitchen debates" of the 1950s, the film takes us on a wild and irreverent ride through an America terrified by the prospect of instant annihilation.

What's neat is that the movie is not narrated except by the voices of the times. President Eisenhower urges America (in its consumer greatness) not to panic. Bert the Turtle teaches a generation of children to duck and cover when they see the atomic flash. Government films urge the country into fallout shelters where they can wait a few minutes before coming up to take a look around and start the arduous job of straightening the picture frames knocked askew by the blast. Catholic clergy are filmed dispensing the government to build the bomb and permitting homeowners to stock "protective devices" in their shelters against those poor souls trying to get in.

The torrent of disinformation and misinformation is fascinating, and would be funnier if the possibility of nuclear war were not so real. Ironic too is the population's level of trust in a government clearly unwilling to level with it about the level of destruction that the bomb would perpetrate.

The film mis-stepped only once, in allowing for sympathy to the Rosenbergs. Subsequent years have shown that they most probably did give nuclear secrets to the Soviets. I can feel pity for their children and abhor their executions without excusing their wickedness.

"Atomic Cafe" does have an agenda. By juxtaposing pictures of children hiding under beds and school desks with images of the obliteration of bombed test homes, it makes clear the fact that nuclear war is not the mostly-survivable thing that might lead some to complacency about atomic attack. The film does not stint on showing the horrors of nuclear attack and fallout. As such, it has done a great service by laying out the true cost of atomic warfare as well as of blindly trusting those who control the detonation of those awful weapons.

The DVD extras are nothing special -- little more than trailers and credits.

4 out of 5 stars A blast from the Good Old Days!.......2006-08-25

Wow this movie is an eye opener. After watching it I can believe in almost any conspiracy theory, because they all sound more reasonable than the truth about the Government's Atomic testing programs. Back then people were told that mny forms of radiation will bounce harmlessly off human skin! Hosts of Kid Tv shows talked about bomb shelter preparedness! No wonder everyone went nuts in the 60's. It was backlash against all the "Atomic War" talk. Children were regularily reminded in classs that an A-bomb could hit at any time.Hmm explains alot about the Boomers. You probably already know that this movie is a collection of propaganda films shown in America to calm the fears of the public over nuclear war. It's brilliantly edited. Hope the makers have a long and prolific career. Some of it is VERY funny when you look back at the attitudes of the time. There's a great part where Nixon appears on a variety show with Nikita Kruschev, and Nikita makes Dick look pretty shabby as they attempt to one up each other on Aamerican national Tv.When you lack the people skills of even a hard line Communist Premiere then you know you're in trouble. Ah Dick, you should have learned. The most important message I got from this film is that the Gov't needs to be watched very closely to ensure its honesty. There are too many agendas floating around Washington that don't have the public's best interest in mind. Don't accept anything that is spoon fed to you because it's probably a load of crap. Except irradiated food, I'm sure the Gov't wouldn't let that happen if it wasn't safe. NOT!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent View into '50s nuclear madness.......2006-08-18

As an elementary school kid during the '50s, I still remember the "duck and cover" song. "The Atomic Cafe" is an excellent look into the past to see just how dangerous new technology can be when the expected benefits are exaggerated and the known hazards are considered insignificant. I remember an article about how nuclear power plants would provide us with so much energy that we would pay a monthly flat rate of about $25 for unlimited power. No one foresaw Three Mile Island or Chernobyl. The only real voice that questioned our headlong rush into the nuclear age were the producers of science-fiction movies because, in the 1950s, any politician or scientist who questioned our nuclear policy was condemned as a communist. "The Atomic Cafe" provides a wonderful look at the past that could serve as a lesson for the future.

3 out of 5 stars Film Review.......2007-01-17

This was an okay film, but it was too long and too repetitive.

4 out of 5 stars Relive "Duck & Cover" in living color........2005-09-03

A documentary that uses previously classified B&W and color footage and powerful symphonic music to fully express the forbidding destructive power of nuclear weapons, Welcome To Ground Zero is the second of four DVD's (that I'm aware of) dedicated to exposing the visual truth behind the testing of nuclear weapons from the mid-1940's through their banishment in the 1970's. Ground Zero concentrates on below ground nuclear tests, and the sight of entire islands rising 25 feet or more into the air and falling back to their foundations in a godlike thud can be quite sobering. This is not an anti-nuclear diatribe, nor is it pro nuclear power. Rather, it simply observes and describes what took place in the infancy of our nuclear life, leaving you to determine which end of the scale this branch of science rests: outrageously dangerous or benignly beneficial. Well worth the price of admission - and one way to prove to your friends how useless "Duck & Cover" would have been in a real nuclear blast.

2 out of 5 stars An Atomic Dud.......2003-12-12

Greatly disappointed by this purchase, and certainly would never call this a documentary. Instead, it is a collection of footage with no timeline, context, nor reason. The producer seems content to move from test to test, providing absolutely no understanding of the public, US political, or international forces leading to these amazing tests; there is no attempt to understand how these tests shaped any US or international policies. Instead, it appears the US atomic testing program was conducted by a bunch of curious, "Gee, let's try this, Verne" nuclear hackers with no accountability to anyone but themselves.

Sorry - maybe I've been spoiled by BBC and PBS quality documentaries. But "Atomic Journeys" is no journey at all. More like a childish merry-go-round.

5 out of 5 stars A RARE look at our Nuclear History !!!.......2003-11-21

Being someone who has worked with the Dept. of Energy ( D.O.E ), toured some of the rarest nuclear weapons sites, been a broadcast engineer/hobbist for 10 Years, and am creating my own special documentary about all things nuclear after 9 years of research; I have found Peter Kuran's work ABSOUTELY PERFECT in every detail, ESPECIALLY in his Film transfers to DVD. He has had access to some of the most recently declassified original films from the DOE archives. Most documentary's simply re-hash some of the same footage I've seen over and over again, but not Peter's. If you're interested in our nuclear history, I've seen all and would recommend ALL of the documentary's by www.vce.com.

In a side note, for the person looking for the expermental bunker.......It's called the GREENBRIER HOTEL. You can see some of it's history at: Http://www.greenbrier.com/docs/history.html

I hope that's what your looking for.

3 out of 5 stars "Looking for a MUST SEE Movie" Help everyone.......2003-11-13

Either in the late 80's or early 1990's I saw a movie about an experimental bomb shelter where there were approximately 12 - 15 individuals that were selected to enter a governmental bomb shelter should the need arise. And of course the day came.
The people had to deal with not only each other and the impending doom, but also the external forces of others - the less fortunate, that somehow find out about the shelter - trying to get in. Pleading with their families in tow. I believe there were camera's that allowed the residents to see the people outside begging.
It turned out that this was all a sham and of course it changed everyone. I liked this movie and now, for the last 8 years or so I have been trying to find it and cannot. I have tried every web page possible, gone through the movies at the video rental places.
I know this is not my imagination, so I am trying here since this seems to be a sight that would know of such a film. I did in fact rent this film, I did not see it direclty on TV, nor have I since.
Any help would be appreciated

Clair

5 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining.......2002-09-08

I love this stuff! It's so bizarre! I've never laughed so hard as when everyone is told to don their anti-radioactive suits in ATOMIC WAR BRIDE and they're just big garbage bags! And then one guy tries to get inside one with somebody else because he doesn't have one. Pure hilarity!

5 out of 5 stars ATOMIC ENTERTAINMENT!!.......2002-06-08

Mike Vraney has turned out this wonderful double bill of Atomic terror. The first film is Atomic war Bride from 1960 Yugoslavia, and it is a well made little film about atomic war and the devastating effects it has on people. A shocking ending as well.
The second filmis a gem called This Is Not A Test. I had seen this on late night television and never forgot it. A gritty, well acted film about several people waiting for the end of the world at a roadblock set up by a local policeman. Great film, great ending!!
The extras are good here as well. I highly recommend this dvd is you like 50's and 60's sci-fi.

5 out of 5 stars THE ATOMIC BLONDE.......2002-04-22

Again S.W.V. pulls off another hat trick. Taking two atomic age films from opposite sides of the world (one, THIS IS NOT A TEST is all American, while ATOMIC WAR BRIDE, is all Yugoslavian - yes, they have a film industry), gives you a uncanny perspective on just how nuclear war was looked at. In some ways they are both the same, but in others, there are major differences (THIS IS NOT A TEST dissolves into a kind of material anarchy, while ATOMIC WAR BRIDE asks for and gets civil duty, but they both end with a bang). As for extra's, S.W.V. has a reputation for pulling together a string of themed shorts that are both funny and downright scary - the best of these shorts for this set is YOU CAN BEAT THE A-BOMB. I must warn you now that this short is perhaps one of the most jaw dropping and creepy short films you will ever see - not only does it approach the subject of nuclear holocoust with a FATHER KNOWS BEST mind set, but even for the time it was produced (1950) it is amazingly scant on details, and long on urban fantasy. Very, very creepy (and please, when you see this, feel free to email me, I would love to know what you think of it). As for the movies, both hold up very well. THIS IS NOT A TEST was done on a near zero budget, but manages to pull off the impossible by being entertaining and creepy all at once. ATOMIC WAR BRIDE is pure propoganda (and good luck trying to decide which side this film is really on), and yet oddly compelling. I can't recommend this S.W.V. DVD enough, it's a classic.

Something Weird's Atomic double feature DVD featuring "Atomic War Bride" (1960) and "This is Not a Test" (1961) is, simply put, amazing. With this release, Something Weird rescues two fascinating, socially significant Cold War era films from permanent obscurity and does it with wonderful style and humor. The special features section (featuring multiple classic civil defense films and fallout shelter TV spots) is just icing on the mushroom shaped cake. Support the resurgence in and redisovery of Atomic Film and BUY this DVD! You will not regret it!

In the years after World War II, American scientists and military officials went on a binge of nuclear-bomb tests in the Southwest; this DVD is a compilation of documentary footage that was intended for internal use and was declassified in 1997. In this series of tests in the Nevada desert, eight bombs were detonated, and the effects of the blasts were studied, using obsolete WWII aircraft, trees, jeeps, building materials, military equipment, and small shacks as subjects. Troops also witnessed the explosions from trenches at various distances from ground zero. The narrator notes the soldiers' fears about the bomb's effects: "Some expected to grow and grow for hours after the blast" (shades of The Amazing Colossal Man). Another chilling note comes from the remark, "From a military standpoint, the blasts over Japan seemed to be pretty effective." As a historical document, this DVD is somewhat marred by the fact that the original narration was replaced and low-budget synthesizer music added. However, it still packs a considerable punch, especially in light of the fact that many American GIs who were on such operations died of radiation-related diseases in ensuing years. Considering the horror of nuclear destruction, it's very jarring to hear something as ghastly as the atomic bomb reduced to cold mathematics and science. There was so much we didn't know in 1954, and the bomb tests, for better or worse, helped to broaden that knowledge. --Jerry Renshaw

Description

Despite its effectiveness in the war, little was actually known about an A-bomb's power. What ships could survive a blast and what ships couldn't? Just how powerful was the shock wave? These are the tests that provided the answers that today are the core of America's nuclear weapon's knowledge. Formerly classified material documents Operation Tumbler Snapper, which detonated small yield atomic weapons to determine their effectiveness on troops, animals and buildings.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-07-17

I expected more of this. It was more like a 50s documentary than a PBS / Discovery of the 90s, which is what I expected.

1 out of 5 stars Second worst DVD I have ever seen........2001-05-12

If you are wondering, the worst DVD I've seen is "The Ultimate Space Experience." This movie is still pretty bad though. I bought it invisioning a lot of big atomic bomb explosions. How could I be more wrong. One. Only one atomic bomb explosion happened during the entire flick. This DVD would only be useful for some kind of research paper, or maybe skeet shooting, not that I've ever tried that. Anyway, if you are planning on buying this, think twice, it's no good.

Unlike the Ultimate Space Experience, I give this a one star rating, as opposed to zero. Screw Flanders. End.

3 out of 5 stars Of historical interest - original training films........1999-09-04

This is not a "Produced" documentary for consumers. The film "Trinity and Beyond" is recommended for that purpose. These are original military films produced by the armed forces for internal use, documenting the effects and deployment of nuclear weapons. They should be viewed as such, as a historical relic of a terrifying time in our past. The quality is that of a typical 16mm film, and some show significant wear. This is to be expected, given their origin. If you have an interest in this aspect of our cold war history, these authentic films are for you.

2 out of 5 stars Typical military video but full of cool information!!.......1999-08-23

This video is a good example of a DOD or military documentary, a bit on the dull side but chock full of interesting information. If you plan on only buying one video about Nuclear Weapons then "Trinity and Beyond" is the one of choice. However, this video fills in many holes that Trinity leaves untouched because it talks to a different audience. Not a great video but one that is a good addition to your nuke collection.

1 out of 5 stars Really Bad.......1999-06-13

A big disappointment.

The images are not very exciting

Writing is horrible, Narration will put you to sleep, Picture quality stinks

I suggest Trinity and Beyond on DVD. Of all my DVD's it is my favorite and includes a 3D extra.

    Product Description

"'Operation Cue' was the name given the Nevada test in 1955, designed to explore the effects of small nuclear weapons upon buildings, towers, and equipment of many kinds. The nuclear device used was comparatively small. It had an explosive force of 30 kilotons, equivalent to 30,000 tons of TNT. Whereas, some modern thermonuclear weapons are in the 20 MegaTon range - 20 Million Tons - more than 600 times as powerful as the bomb shown here, and with a much wider radius of destruction. In this test, many of the structures damaged by the 30 KiloTon bomb were approximately one mile from 'Ground Zero'. With a 20 MegaTon blast, they probably would be obliterated, and comparable damage would occur out to a distance of at least 8.5 or 9 miles. Therefore while 'Operation Cue' was valuable for research and test purposes, it does not reflect the full severity of today's larger thermonuclear weapons with their associated fallout hazard." Enjoy this educational and entertaining disc on your DVD player in the comfort of your living room. Originally produced and presented in 1955 and revised in 1964 by the Department of Defense, Office of Civil Defense - "Survival is Your Business". Watch as the test site is meticulously configured to approximate actual living conditions in effort to determine the effects of a nuclear blast. This disc is an important part of world history. Great for home-schoolers! Arrange a viewing for students and use this film as a tool to begin a discussion regarding the technology and the time period. Preserve this wonderful and historical film in your own private DVD library. 'Operation Cue' has been painstakingly transferred to DVD in effort to bring it to you in the best quality presentation possible. Great for the classroom, family gatherings, informal get-togethers or any occassion, Operation Cue on DVD is sure to provide endless hours of viewing pleasure!
