3 out of 5 stars Imagine that. Gumby is a rock creature!.......2007-04-15

Well I'm making this review real short. Not a lot to talk about here except the title for my review.

PROS:

1. Gumby is a rock creature.

2. A bunch of beauty contest winners from around the world play the female moon maidens.

3. The man who built the spaceship was from the moon and on an earth expedition. He built the ship to return to the moon...hmmmm, not the worst idea I ever hear.

4. He doesn't make it...hmmm. He was the only one who wanted to go.

5. Hand made and somewhat funny looking spiders "...the dark ones..."
inhabit a cave. I'm not sure but I think when the first one is shown and it is crawling over some rocks to get at somebody--one of its legs might have fallen off. They only have two eyes, somewhat human like and one of the eyes--I think it was the left one--is crossed.

six. Oh yes, did you know on the moon you only have to wear a flightsuit, helmet, gloves, oxygen and mask?

7. The real evil female, who kills her queen, is really trying to over act a bit, look close at her face.

CONS:

1. Suffers from a lack of most things in big and little amounts. More money, a little better acting, a few hundred or thousands of dollars, spacesuit props, a little bit faster gumby monster--I think I spelled that right.

If you have never seen this movie it will be worth a quick look with the proper amount of pop corn, no hot dogs needed this time. You only need a dog when things are getting serious. For those of you who liked Rocketship X-M this one is going to be a little bit of a let down. Nevertheless, I do recommend this retro movie with a three star rating.
It just barely got the third star. So why did I give it? Well, I do like these old movies...I've never seen one I didn't like at least one star worth, and it is raining outside, and I'm bored stiff.

So, all in all, if you're collecting these things like I am,--for entertainment--you can safely put this one in the middle of the 'low end' movie shelf beside Plan 9. At least they gave it a shot. I do find it interesting Jules Verne over a hundred years ago knew you needed pressurized suits in his First Men in the Moon and over sixty years later most of hollywood didn't...do you guess these guys never read a book?

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Garbage!.......2007-01-31

Movies don't stick in your memory for forty years for no good reason. This one just would not go away. Low expectations are wonderfully rewarded. The pre-feminist theme of men as mezmerized breeding slaves in a phony underground lunar playground works to perfection. Matriarchal society never looked so good as with this cast of beauty pageant winners. You too will say, "Yes, my Lido!"

3 out of 5 stars A copy-cat-women of the moon piece.......2006-06-29

Missile To The Moon is what you might call the poor man's version of Cat-Women Of the Moon, sans way-out cat-dance. The revamped version with its two younger leads, who are escaped convicts, obviously intended to cash in on the Rebel Without A Cause wave that was going around at the time. Now we get some rock creatures you will almost swear have happy-smiling faces when you see them for the first time. The spacesuits are nothing more than airforce fighter pilot uniforms with snow boots. There is also a spider in this one, but instead of strings, it is a cable that is shamelessly unhidden this time. Whereas Cat-Women had the potential to evoke a feeling of bitter-sweetness, the moon women are swanky and decadent. The Alpha character is played by this Miss Yugoslavia pageant winner--stunning eye candy, but not nearly as sinister as the original Alpha. Because the moon women's costumes are somewhat more revealing and somehow also lend to the ladies more inactivity than the cat-women, this in effect seems to spoil what should have the dreamy ambiance of mystery that was so nearly successfully captured in Cat-Woman. Because the issues of species survival has shifted more towards species dominance, it is also hard to sympathize with the moon women when Leto first reveals their plight. As for the DVD itself, the transfer is respectable. The extras comprise of a pretty nifty collection of behind-the scenes photos. All in all, it is a good purchase--if you can find it used for under 7$.

3 out of 5 stars Fly Me To The Moon..................2006-05-04

'Missile To The Moon' was released in '59, I was seven at the time. The first time I watched this film was on television, it was one of those "Movies of the Week" where it ran every night, Monday thru Friday at 8 o'clock, Saturday afternoon and twice on Sunday. I didn't miss a single showing.

Hey what did you expect, what little kid could resist a flight to the Moon, frightening rock monsters, a giant cave spider on strings and some very lovely Moon Maidens in form fitting tops and stretch pants. It was like heaven. I didn't particularily like the fact that these lovely lunar ladies where able to control humans through mind control, but I guess that was something I would learn to accept when I grew older (THAT'S A JOKE!).

Bad special effects, low budget, silly script, but lots of fun! However after all these years I still hate that stupid spider for eating Pat Mowry, my favorite Moon Maiden.

3 out of 5 stars Bodacious Lunar Amazons And The Feeble Earthmen Who Love Them..........2005-12-23

We desperately need to get another moon mission together, RIGHT NOW! The place is crawling w/ statuesque moon babes! Send me today! I surrender! They can have me! Ahem.... anyway, MISSILE TO THE MOON involves a team of space explorers (including two escaped cons) who land on the moon, get chased by lumbering rock-monsters, and find a cave filled w/ precious oxygen (!). Not only this, but the cave leads to a hidden city populated by beautiful models in high-heels and one-piece bathing suits! Their leader, or "Lido", is a cross between Auntie Mame, Liberache, and Medusa in her titanic head-dress! Cathy Downs, the lone female earthling, is vexed and intimidated by the moon's high estrogen level. She must fight for her man while looking smart in her pearl necklace and earrings! Alas, the males have fallen under the spell of the lunar ladies! What will become of them? MTTM proves once and for all that the moon truly is made of cheese...

These aliens are armed and gunning for puny humans in four thrill-packed sci-fi hits. First, a power-mad BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS invades the mind of helpless John Agar, turning him into a black-eyed, cackling fiend capable of blasting planes from the sky! Then hapless astronauts on a mission discover sexy, ruthless CAT-WOMEN OF THE MOON who don't take kindly to trespassers on their lunar paradise. Then stick around a little longer for a remake of the same story, MISSILE TO THE MOON, which tosses in giant spiders and rock creatures for maximum monster mayhem. Finally, return to home planet for THE DAY IT CAME TO EARTH, when a flaming meteor crash-lands in a small swamp town and unleashes a shambling zombie terror. You'll never look at the stars the same way again after this queasy quartet of extra-terrestrial epics!

    4 out of 5 stars Alien movies.......2007-01-10

Purchased for nostalgia sake. Parents used to drop me off w/ a girlfriend at the movie theater to see double features. We were only six. Could you imagine doing that today? I remember Moon women and other really bad missle to moon type movies. They're good for a Friday night giggle. These 4 CDs are well packaged and enjoyable to look at as well as play.

4 out of 5 stars A rocket blast from the golden past........2006-06-29

Forgive the rap. These movies, although not the eye-popping ilk of Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers, or War of the Worlds, or even Invaders From Mars, are still worthy additions to anyone's canon of what goes for classic science-fiction. Sure, the sets move when the actors bump them in Catwomen, and the so-called Brain is barely believable in Planet Arous, and the sets still move in Missile To The Moon, and the acting of The Day It Came To Earth has to be seen to be believed, but what is required here (as even in Star Wars) is a suspension of disbelief. It seems to me that as movies get more sophisticated with the special effects, there isn't as much of a challenge being demanded of with our imaginations. It's as if the work is being done for us. See these movies not for their flaws, but for the light and shadow of mystery that is still in each one---even if you have to look a little harder than Close Encounters of the Third Kind to find it . . .

    1 out of 5 stars Project Moonbase.......2005-04-05

I bought Project Moonbase recently, based on a few reviews that it was better than average. Ten minutes into the movie, I was snoring on the couch. The acting...lets just say I think the cast members were issued broomsticks. The sets and props were cheesy and beyond unimaginative. The dialogue was so dull and drawn-out, I wondered if I had just taken two prozacs. I felt compelled to leave a poor review just to give potential buyers a warning that I couldnt watch it again. I'm not sure why this movie would be released on DVD, when there are real classics' like "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" that are much more worthy.

    3 out of 5 stars Rock Monsters!.......2004-07-05

Considering "Missile To The Moon" is sold alone at the same price as this double-pack, it's a pretty good deal. These are two separate dvd's, each with its own case and cover art. They each have a one-sided single page insert with a chapter index. Both films are in b&w despite the cover art. Both films are standard width, not widescreen. Both dvd's have chapter indexes. "Project.. " has the original trailer & "Missile.." has a photo gallery.

1953's Project Moonbase" is a failed attempt at pre-feminist woman-power, with a female US President, and a woman colonel in charge of the mission (Donna Martel). Ms. Martel is pleasant to look at, but her screechy & petulant portrayal is tiresome rather than silly or funny. The story is dull - a mission to orbit the earth goes haywire and the rocket ends up landing on the moon, waiting for rescue. There are no monsters or moon people. The transfer is excellent - crisp visuals and sound. The special effects include space station characters walking sideways on the walls. The fact that a 1953 filmmaker envisioned a space station in permanent orbit around Earth is impressive, but the movie is ultimately dull, and exasperating in its adolescent portrayal of a female colonel. And don't even get me started on the short-shorts and bathing caps.

1959's "Missile to the Moon" is the winner here. Although the transfer is poor, with many scenes spoiled by white flashes from a scratchy source and the occasional fleck of dirt, until there's a better version available I would still recommend owning this movie. The sound is excellent & the visuals are sharp (aside from aforementioned problem). The plot: a spaceship heads to the moon, carrying an engaged couple, 2 escaped convicts & the scientist who built the ship. Only the scientist knows why they're going, and he ends up dead before they arrive. Upon arrival, they are greeted by rock monsters and mysterious female inhabitants with a secret agenda. The rock monsters are classic - they will immediately remind you of the first time you saw this film, probably as a kid watching Saturday morning tv. The acting is energetic and convincing. Good story, sets & costumes & most of the special effects are quite good. Exception: the wildly pathetic spider monster puppet is just embarassing. But nevermind that - for B-movie, 50's Sci-Fi buffs, this one's a keeper.
