This 3 movie box set sort of completes the whole series. The movies are great. I also found the bonus features - interviews with Laura and Mary - very interesting and somehing I had been waiting for in all the previous box sets.

4 out of 5 stars Worth buying to complete the series.......2007-03-28

My daughter and I enjoyed these 3 short movies.
We laughed, cryed and had to remember how it all started, as it all ended.
The bowing up of the town, was well done, but so glad the little church was spared. I am glad we bought this series, its all complete, we enjoyed series 1, till the very end. Alot of families will benifit, as its a great way to raise your children, and it doesnt have to be fiction. make it fact.

Judy Holliday's Oscar-winning performance is just one of the reasons to watch this terrific 1950 comedy, which is equally acclaimed for its deliciously witty screenplay (based on Garson Kanin's long-running Broadway hit) and George Cukor's silky-smooth direction. Holliday plays Billie Dawn, the floozie fiancée of a junk-dealer millionaire (Broderick Crawford), who is trying to make a good impression among the Washington, D.C., politicos he's hoping to influence. To ensure that Billie gets properly "culturefied," the corrupt Crawford hires a D.C. journalist (William Holden) to give the seemingly dim-witted blonde a crash course in politics, history, literature, and--you guessed it--true love. Billie's not nearly as dumb as she seems, of course, and before long she's graduated from pawn to sassy queen on her husband's political chessboard.

Watching Born Yesterday is a crash course in itself--an object lesson in how low American screen comedy has fallen from these delirious heights. The movie's funny even when there's a pause in the golden dialogue, such as when Holliday tests Crawford's patience in a sublimely comedic round of gin rummy. There's not a single scene in which Holliday (reprising her Broadway role) isn't simply perfect, the cogs turning smoothly behind her dim expressions and coarsely high-pitched squeal. Suave as ever, Holden is her match made in heaven, and Crawford is a brute who's too stupid to be genuinely malevolent. Put 'em all together and you've got a timeless classic, so flawless that a 1993 remake was instantly doomed to pale comparisons. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Born Yesterday.......2007-06-25

New York-born comedienne Holliday had her first real film break the prior year as the wronged wife in the Tracy-Hepburn comedy "Adam's Rib" (1949), and her solid supporting turn helped her clinch the role of Billie, a role she'd done on Broadway. With its witty screenplay and "Pygmalion"-like story, the result was pure gold, netting Holliday the Best Actress Oscar for 1950, and jump-starting her film career in earnest. Broderick is wonderfully crude as her pre-occupied husband, and Holden performs the unheralded job of straight man with finesse. And Judy is fantastic. Smoothly paced comedy from master George Cukor.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic to love.......2007-04-02

I remember seeing this film when I was 12 or so with my Mom. It left an impression and I knew I would have to add this to my classic movie collection. How I enjoyed watching Judy Holliday's performance, she was unique with a wonderful sense of comedic timing. Anyone who collects classic comedies should add this to the list.

4 out of 5 stars What Learning Will Do to You.......2007-04-02

Born Yesterday begins with a narcissistic junk dealer Harry Brock (Broderick Crawford) who is planning a major merger with his company to make loads of money. He uses his dizzy girlfriend Billie (Judy Holliday) as a middleman, though he really controls everything she "owns." She is just content to accept his lavish gifts and be pretty. That is until Paul(William Holden) comes along. He is hired by Harry to educate Billie; she embarasses him in front of sophisticated company. In the process, she learns just how corrupt her fiancee is and why her father has disowned her. She also develops eyes for her teacher.

Holliday won the Oscar for her performance in this film against such professionals as Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson. Indeed, her performance is wonderful. One can watch her character transform before one's eyes from a gold digging chorus girl to an intelligent woman. Her relationship with Holden is believable and powerful. In fact, all of the roles are well developed. The dialogue is conversational but intelligent, making this a very worthwhile film.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performance.......2006-12-04

I'm not a big Judy Holliday fan. She seems to have played the ditzy but smart squeaky-voice role over and over. This said, Born Yesterday is easily her best movie. The script is smart and sweet and she and William Holden have a natural, believable screen chemistry. The performances are excellent as is the Pygmalion like transformation of Holliday's character from mouse to lionness. A great comedy of manners and morality.

3 out of 5 stars A Revival of Sorts........2006-09-11

This original Oscar-winning movie starring Judy Holliday was clever, witty and wise. It was shown on TCM with Nick Clooney guiding us with his winning ways into the mood of the Forties. He couldn't have seen the original at the theaters, either, as he and I are the same age, so I know I didn't see it when I was only ten. I thought the moll was ditzy and pretty dumb with a silly-sounding voice. In Pulaski, Nate Street from Hickman County, a radio personality who liked to be thought of as a drama critic as he always attended dress rehearsal of the college plays, voiced his like for this crazy dame. So, I thought that if he thought she was so good, as she was in "Bells Are Ringing," maybe he was right again.

Today, I saw a revival of "Born Yesterday" with my favorite local actor as the genius, Paul Verrall. He was splendid as I expected, though he did not have the Washington, D.C. accent. The whole performance was professionally done at the Clarence Brown Theater here. Previously, I was lucky to have stumbled into a performance in which Terry Weber was a one-man play about Abraham Lincoln/John Wilkes Booth and have never enjoyed a performance of any play more. He has an unusual talent to be serious, musical, and sometimes funny.

The play centers around political corruption in which Billie becomes unknowingly involved. That is, until Paul tutors her on proper ways of thinking and talking so as to 'fit in.' Judy played to the camera and acted as a silly, dumb blonde. Today, the actress was unusually clever in adopting Judy's unique way of speaking but showing how easy it is to change practically overnight into an educated woman who can fall in love and not just be used by a rich man. She was smart enough to take her furs when she left him. Broaderick Crawford, known for "Highway Patrol" on television, could not have been as brutal as Neil Friedman from Chicago as Harry Brock. He didn't even use his Chicago accent. That was good acting to say the least. Terry was the star of this revival of sorts, a revolution against violence and money laundering of any kind.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!!! -- Like it better than the original........2007-05-31

Melanie Griffith is one of my favorite Bombshells. I think she was made for this role & is a role model for being sexy! I rented the original film about 6 months ago. I found the character, that Judy Holliday played, didn't elicit any sympathy from me & I didn't really like her character as a person. One thing I did love discovering, when I watched the original, was that the uncouth but cute "Whaaaaaat?!!!!!!" screamed by Billie Dawn, was from the original movie. Melanie's Billie Dawn makes you want her to succeed & makes you feel for her plight of being uneducated amongst the DC circle. Plus I just love most of Bille Dawn's outfits in this film. I watch this movie when I'm feeling a little flustered, overwhelmed & stupid -- I watch Billie struggle all over again & succeed all over again & it makes me feel like I can do what I set out to do. The movie even inspired me to get a copy of Democracy in America!

4 out of 5 stars Melanie Griffith/Don Johnson = Fun!.......2007-05-06

This 1993 remake of the 1950 film "Born Yesterday" is full of mediocre acting and a contrived plot but the charm of Melanie's character and the chemistry with Don Johnson make it a fun bit of fluff you'll find yourself watching over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Irresistible.......2007-04-12

Melanie Griffith's charm and acting prowess is simply irresistible and like that famous Robert Palmer song, she is gonna have to face it she's addicted to love. With Don Johnson, of all people!

So what do you get when you throw John Goodman, Melanie Griffith, and the effeminately voiced Don Johnson into a bowl, simmer on high for about 2 hours, and then stir it all up? You get fun stew, that's what you get, and "Born Yesterday" is the rare exception of a remake that bests the original by leaps and bounds.

If you haven't seen it, then you really should drop everything that you're doing right now and buy "Born Yesterday." Don't rent it. Renting is for suckas. Besides, you'll probably rent it, think it's the most incredible movie of all time, and then kick yourself because you could have just have bought it to begin with. So my advice, friend, is spare the self-kicking and just plunk down the $79.00 or however much DVDs cost (I don't know how much they go for these days, because I purchase all my DVDs on the streets while they're still in theaters. As illegal bootlegs--that's how I buy them all. It's more efficient that way).

Anyway, in this movie Melanie Griffith is a fish-out-of-water, similar to when she was a Working Girl fish-out-of-water, or when she was a Shining Through fish-out-of-water, but completely dissimilar to when she was a Bonfire of the Vanities fish-out-of-water. She injects into every character she plays, thankfully, that wonderfully crispy and fun-loving voice that is only slightly deeper than Don Johnson's.

You will only not like this movie if your movie taste is bad or if you are Antonio Banderas. All others can rejoice!

4 out of 5 stars VERY WATCHABLE DESPITE THE AIRHEAD BLONDE CLICHE.........2004-06-03

It's difficult for me to tell which group this light film satirizes more: bimbo blondes (our protagonist blonde miraculously amasses sparkling intellect through avid reading of a dictionary and the Constitution) or boorish politicians.

Because the new film can't really tell audiences anything about the idiocy of politics that they don't already know, I'd say Born Yesterday is principally about the blonde's enlightenment and her humiliation of her pompous politician husband.

Overall it is a fairly inoffensive that lesirely goes about its comic business. I've seen it a couple of times and finished it on both occasions. And it's in colour (to counter-argue the whole Original vs New debate that other reviewers seem to be fascinated with).

Recommended rental for sure.

5 out of 5 stars I never saw the original, version, so I loved it........2004-05-13

John Goodman and Melanie Griffith played their parts suberbly.

This is about a millionaire scrap metal tycoon who turns real estate mogul (John Goodman) whose clueless girlfriend (Melanie Griffith) finds herself without a clue in the Washington-Merrie-Go-Round. So her boyfriend (Goodman) hires Paul Verrall (Don Hohnson) to help her with the special skills, small talk, etc.

A problem: boyfriend Goodman, like almost everyone else, as the story demonstrates, are not nearly as smart as they lead everyone else to believe, like the reporter for NPR who pretends to have read de Toqueville, but has not, as Griffith discovers. It is all an act, designed to impress others.

The script is so true to life, full of flakes and phonies, that it is almost laughable.

A great movie, and one you will probably remember for a long time. It shows how we all get bullied by the people with real power over us. Very entertaining, too.

Vittorio De Sica's delightful anthology comedy from 1963 pairs joined-at-the-hip costars Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni in three funny stories about sex. The first finds Loren playing an impoverished woman with a jail sentence hanging over her head. A unique loophole in the law, however, keeps her out from behind bars: pregnant women and new mothers cannot be incarcerated. Forestalling her date with the pokey, this incredibly fecund felon keeps bearing children. Her lucky but exhausted accomplice is played by Mastroianni, who can't resist her siren call between deliveries. The middle vignette finds the two actors playing secretive lovers having an affair. Shot mostly from within and around his car, the pair self-consciously quibbles and keeps having comic mishaps that slow their progress. The last story is the cheekiest, featuring Loren as an expensive hooker whose date with a--shall we say "anxious"--Mastroianni is repeatedly broken up by a neighboring seminarian whose commitment to chastity has been rocked since seeing her. This tale includes Loren's famous striptease, the one Robert Altman sweetly parodied in Ready to Wear. --Tom Keogh

Description

Academy Award(r) Winner Sophia Loren (TWO WOMEN) and Academy Award(r) nominee Marcello Mastroianni (LA DOLCE VITA, 8 1/2) team up in all three hilarious sexual escapades in this delightful comedy anthology which helped establish the two stars as the most popular Italian performers of 20th century cinema.

YESTERDAY, TODAY & TOMORROW, winner of the 1964 Oscar(r) for Best Foreign Film, remains one of the most beloved Italian films of all time.

A masterful comedic film by Italy's greatest neo-realist director, Vittorio De Sica (THE BICYCLE THIEF, TWO WOMEN), is here for the first time ever on DVD in America -uncut in its original aspect ratio.

The brand new 16x9 digital transfer was restored in collaboration with De Sica Foundation from the original 35mm interpositive and has never looked better.

The final vignette featuring Loren's notorious striptease, was recreated decades later by Robert Altman in READY TO WEAR.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.......2007-07-02

De Sica is best known for the neorealist classic "The Bicycle Thief," but this hilarious, Oscar-winning sex farce shows the Italian director melding his keen observation of human behavior with broad humor, drawing on the prodigious talents of Italy's top two actors. Loren is sultry, brash, high-strung, and bawdy, especially in the justifiably famous strip-tease scene that figures so prominently in "Mara." The impeccably suave Mastroianni is a hoot, too, clearly enjoying his triple role as naughty playboy, high-profile john, and in "Adelina," sexually fatigued father of umpteen children--and counting! Few comedies today have as much style or sass as De Sica's "Yesterday."

1 out of 5 stars Yesterday, Today and Tomororrow.......2007-05-08

The DVD is new but the technical quality of the picture and sound is so poor that it's impossible to watch the movie. It was a waste of my money and time.

3 out of 5 stars Sophia Loren's "Yesterday".......2007-03-16

Product in good condition. However, the movie is in Italian with English subtitles, and this was NOT clearly stated in the ads. I would not have purchased it had I known.

5 out of 5 stars good movie.......2007-03-11

Sophia Loren was great when she was young and even better as time goes on

3 out of 5 stars A full Italian experience.......2007-03-10

This movie is divided into three different love stories, definitely takes you back to Southern Italian living about thirty years ago, and as such it provides the full spectrum of charming, humorous and manupalitive dynamics played out between a man and a woman - mostly from a female viewpoint. If you love Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroiani at the height of their popular common career point and want to get some cultural impression of Italy it is worthwhile to dive into, but it sure is bit too "yesterday" for today's movie expectations.

As beautiful as it is heartbreaking, the Oscar®-nominated drama Yesterday brings an intimate human perspective to the AIDS crisis in Africa. On the surface, it's a harsh and devastating story about bad things happening to good people, but such a limited description robs the film of its warmth and tender compassion. Best known for his 1995 drama Cry the Beloved Country, director Darrell James Roodt returns to his native South Africa for this moving and heartfelt portrait of a young, devoted mother named Yesterday (played by Leleti Khumalo, from Hotel Rwanda) who learns that she is HIV positive, and remains determined to stay alive until her young daughter Beauty (Lihle Mvelase) is old enough to go off to school. Her husband (Kenneth Khambula) is also stricken with AIDS, and Yesterday cares for him even as they are ostracized by fearful neighbors in their tiny Zulu village. One might expect a film about AIDS to be terribly depressing, and Roodt pulls no punches when conveying the emotional anguish of Yesterday's dilemma. But Yesterday is so visually beautiful in terms of its physical and spiritual landscape (it was filmed in the expansive KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa) that it's universally appealing, and the score by Madale Kunene adds just the right emotional seasoning to the film's ethnic roots. Anyone with a beating heart can relate to Yesterday's plight as a caring wife and mother, and Khumalo's performance is so lovely that she lights up the screen, even (and perhaps especially) during Yesterday's darkest hours. Without pounding on its point, Yesterday puts a human face on a global crisis that's too often viewed on impersonal terms. --Jeff Shannon

Description

After falling ill, Yesterday (Khumalo) learns that she is HIV positive. With her husband in denial and young daughter to tend to, Yesterday's one goal is to live long enough to see her child go to school. Set against the awesome, harsh landscapes of South Africa, Yesterday is an eloquent, unsentimental film that quietly builds an overwhelming emotional force

5 out of 5 stars yesterday - nezuro.......2007-04-19

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-09-11

This movie is so moving. It shows the true impact AIDS has on a rural South African black community. A must see!

5 out of 5 stars Where Does the River Go?.......2006-07-07

"Where does the river go?" the small daughter asks her mother as they wash clothes on the special washing stones at the river.
"To the sea. It comes from the mountains," she replies, "and it cannot run backwards." Thus runs a paraphrased passage of dialogue from "Yesterday."

This powerful film of compassion and communtity is directed by Darrell James Roodt, best known for his film "Cry the Beloved Country," a stunning film based on the literary classic of South African life by the same name. His film "Yesterday" was nominated for many awards in 2004, the year of its release: best foregn language film for the Academy Awards; the Official Selection of such prestigious film festivals as the Toronto International film festival, and London Film Festival. In 2005, "Yesterday" was the Independent Spirit Awards Best Foreign Film nominee. But it was the Human Rights Film Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2004 where it scooped up the prize.

But, back to that river. "Yesterday" shows the river of love, harsh and true. All types of love: mother-daughter; communal; professional; the reinstatement and deepening of a marriage at the end of life, and a vast landscape holding its humans. "Yesterday" shows the river of time. No, it cannot run backwards. Only to the sea.

--Janet Grace Riehl, author "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary"

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS MOVIE!.......2006-05-02

This is a great movie. The Actor who played yesterday showed great acting skills when showing diffrent emotions. The story was very touching...and it is always great to see the south african culture and hear the wonderful language of Zulu. Although this movie was in subtitles, the movie will still touch your heart and will still take you into the movie as if it were in english. I think the subtitles made the movie truly unique and original you get so much into the movie you forget. GET THIS MOVIE! TODAY NOT TOMMOROW...GET YESTERDAY!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-03-18

The movie bought life into an issue that most times is overlooked in reference to other people and cultures who are affected by HIV. I had to watch it twice. Both times were very moving as if I'd never seen it before. The acting, especially Yesterday, was awesome.

At this point, Jethro Tull are already over halfway through their fourth decade as an entity, but this 90-minute documentary is a thoroughly entertaining look at frontman Ian Anderson and company's first quarter-century. While only Anderson remains from the original lineup (Tull actually began in '68, DVD title notwithstanding), with guitarist Martin Barre having joined as of their second album, part of the fun comes from watching more than a dozen members past and present coming together at a genteel reunion party to be interviewed and share reminiscences. The DVD is also strong on concert performance and video excerpts, especially those from the band's most successful period (the codpiece-and-minstrelsy '70s stretch that yielded hit records like Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, and Songs from the Wood), in addition to more recent items, including their rehearsals for a 25th anniversary reunion tour. DVD bonus materials feature seven of those performances (including "Teacher," "The Witch's Promise," and "Aqualung") in their entirety. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars A most awesome retrospective.......2007-04-10

Folks, This is a must have if you are a Tull Fan. If you missed "The Hare that Lost his Specticles" from the Passion Play Tour, this DVD contains the full version of the play/movie from that tour. Highly reccommend this DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Let me bring you memories of Tull.......2006-12-02

This is an interesting retrospective of Jethro Tull's journey for the first 25 years. The conceptual format of vintage video excerpts in between clips of band members past and present for a reunion in an English tavern comes off as ideal. "Witches Promise," shown here through a 1971 performance from Top of the Pops will make viewers say, "Oh my God," and a lot of the vintage footage from the first few years is sometimes comical as you see Jethro Tull starting out as a folk-rock outfit trying to find their harder edge, which they eventually did with many years of commercial success. Jethro Tull's best decade was the 70's, musically and artistically, and this DVD should include some more concert footage from that era than what is actually provided. The clips of "Nothing is Easy," "Minstrel in the Gallery," "Auqalung," and "Songs From the Wood," are the highlights, but of all the parts from their 1973 Passion Play tour, the only clip included here is the only dull portion of that whole concept album with "The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles,"(never quite understood that part anyway)and the excerpts from Tull's transformation into the 80's seem less interesting, especialy the video for 1989's "Kissing Willie," which only serves as an embarrassment for Tull having to accept that such a great band made such a terrible song and video. The reflections and bits of interviews with Ian anderson and his bandmates is always worth a listen, and overall this anniversary collection is a must-have edition for the true Jethro Tull fan.

3 out of 5 stars Documentary 5 Stars...Music 2 Stars.......2006-09-29

Excelllent documentary of the band's beginnings and where they all are today. I was disappointed what few songs were played constantly were interrupted, and twice the sound track was not in synch with his singing. Overall? Best part i enjoyed was the reunion of ALL 30 of the past and present members of Jethro Tull. Some of the extras were kind of silly, but i suppose you'd have to be British to understand. If you are looking for an addition to your Tull dvd collection, this one would fit in nicely..But if you're looking for Ian Anderson's music? Id look for another title from the band.

2 out of 5 stars OK, but not great.......2006-09-25

As huge JT fan, I was hoping for more complete songs on the disc..interesting interviews, but I watch all my oncerts with cordless headphones while on the treadmill & stationary bike, and desire more concert-style dvds to avoid skipping the interview tracks.

3 out of 5 stars So-So .......2005-09-06

This could have been so much more. Why the interviewer asked the questions he did is a mystery and why weren't more of the band members included. It comes off looking ameteurish and self conscious and the boys could have done better for their silver jubilee. The bonus video section is the best part of the package. Hopefully, one day, we'll get a warts and all Jethro Tull rockumentary, this isn't it.

--Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great Film, Lena Headey is Sublime.......2006-09-04

Great film, one of those rare finds...It is a love story but not a "chick flick" at all...a fair view from both male and female eyes regarding love and infidelity....thought provoking but not re: morality...just life and human mistakes and redemption...perfectly done
Should not be missed!

4 out of 5 stars FATE, NOSTALGIA AND PENELOPE.......2002-05-02

True, the plot of TWICE UPON A YESTERDAY, a british movie directed by María Ripoll in 1998, will ring a bell in you. If reviewers have already pointed out that the screenplay of SLIDING DOORS ( also a 1998 movie ) is very similar to Rafa Russo's TUY screenplay, I've personnally thought about GROUNDHOG DAY while watching the movie. But who cares after all, only counts the result.

I didn't like so much the first third of the movie, fearing the worst after two or three so so scenes of comedy implying Douglas Henshall who plays the main character. But as soon as Victor Bukowski, rejected into the past, is trying to fight against destiny in order to keep Lena Headey at his side, the movie gains a new dimension.

María Ripoll could have chosen to stay in the comedy field but has preferred the tragi-comedy domain, a domain very difficult to master. So TWICE UPON A YESTERDAY becomes then a little pearl of melancholy and nostalghia about love and missed opportunities. Of course, the (late) apparition of Penélope Cruz cannot but elevate the level of the film (word of a fan!).

As bonus features, only a trailer and different subtitles. Sound and images OK.

A DVD zone Penélope reserved shelf.

2 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE..........2001-11-05

Another completely contrived and silly British film along the lines of Sliding Doors. What if you had done something differently? In this case, a man in a long-term relationship is having an affair with a co-worker in the theatre where he is an actor. He decides he is going to leave his girlfriend for the actress, so when the girlfriend confronts him about his affair, he says, yes he did have the affair. She is devastated and leaves him. He ends up alone, and his now ex-girlfriend meets a new man at her gym, and they are about to get married. He tries to stop her, but fails. He meets some strange men who put him back to the day when he decided to tell the girlfriend about the affair to see if he could change things if he did everything differently. He decides not to tell her about the affair and puts an end to the affair and starts to change his life. As it turns out, she still meets the man at the gym and she has an affair with him before finally leaving the boyfriend for the guy at the gym. So the actor is left alone again, but he meets a girl (Penelope Cruz) and suddenly realises that he has really found the right woman for him. And his life changes dramatically. He gets a part on a television show, wins rave reviews, and has an outstanding love life. But Cruz is not satisfied because it still seems to her that he is holding back, still hung up on the ex girlfriend. Eventually the ex girlfriend calls him and wants to try to get back together again, but by this time he realises that Cruz is the one for him. Really just a contrived story. Nothing worth seeing because chances are you have seen it all before, done better.

Volume 11 in the classic Star Trek series on DVD contains the delightful episode "Tomorrow Is Yesterday," a time-travel story with an infectious blend of suspense and humor. After dropping into a black hole, the Enterprise ends up orbiting the Earth in the late 1960s, and is spotted by U.S. Air Force Captain Christopher (Roger Perry), who happens to be flying by in his jet. Inadvertently giving poor Christopher an unwanted glimpse into the future, and wrecking his jet with an overpowering tractor beam, Capt. Kirk (William Shatner), not having a good day, beams him aboard the Federation starship. The collision of sensibilities and reference points between characters born several centuries apart has a fresh, urgent tone that subsequent Star Trek series have never captured (though Deep Space Nine came close with its dazzling episode "Trials and Tribble-ations"). The problem, of course, is what to do about Christopher now that he knows what he knows, and history demands that he stay put in his own world: the pilot's unborn son, it seems, will one day make a space flight of historic importance. Terrifically entertaining and something of a precedent-setter for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (the theatrical feature set in contemporary San Francisco), "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" is Trek at its best.

Also on this disc is "Return of the Archons," a cautionary story about mind control written by Gene Roddenberry. The tale begins when Ensign Sulu (George Takei) is taken hostage on an Earth-like planet with a primitive culture. Zapped by a weapon that leaves him under the control of someone or something named Landru, Sulu is then pursued by Kirk and Spock (Leonard Nimoy), who discover that Landru has the same grip on everyone else. Once Landru becomes aware of efforts by the captain and first officer to interfere with its bidding, Kirk and Spock become the target of a massive hunt by locals. A minor episode with a somewhat obvious scenario, "Return of the Archons" does have novel appeal in its heightened role for the ever-charming Sulu, and in Roddenberry's characteristically humane interest in elements that make people (and intelligent aliens) everywhere free to fulfill their destinies. The solution to the who-is-Landru mystery won't surprise anyone, but it may strike you as a prototype of several future episodes, from all the Trek series, involving centralized caretaking on various planets. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars One Good Ep and One Weak One!.......2006-07-31

On the strength of the first ep, I'm giving this one 3 stars. In this the first full ep with a time travel theme, we have an amusing story of the Enterprise getting inadvertantly thrown back into time to arrive at Earth in the 1960s. The acting by the guest stars is quite good and overall, the storyline is quite absorbing with a number of humorous bits thrown in.

The theme of the second ep though seems to be a recurring one which keeps cropping up in many guises such as in "What are Little Girls Made of" and in "The Apple" later where we get machines running the lives of people although with good intentions. I just didn't seem to be as insightful and original an ep to me and so it just rates as average.

Overall, I'd say this is a good volume to borrow but is not really one you'd go all out to keep. If you are picking and choosing your volumes to collect, you'd probably not miss this one not being in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorites.......2004-03-10

Tomorrow Is Yesterday is one of the best time-travel episodes in all of Trek. It follows all the warnings and some of the potential benfits any time travel story has to reckonize. Too bad they didn't make it the second half of a two-parter along with The Naked Now. I have to give credit where it's due. Leonard Nimoy made this point back on the Sci-Fi Channels Star Trek: Special Edition (back in '99 I think). Anyway, I never forgot the connection of two great stories.

Maybe Return Of The Archons isn't near the top of anybody else's list but I think it's underrated. The story takes on a great number of ideas, from "arrested society" to "technological domination". Despite its flaws it tells a good story. My favorite gaff is the feeling of discontinuity, or was it bad editing?

I always saw this episode as a 'Spock like computer' forcing its' logic on the 'emotional inhabitants' who probably would have destroyed themselves otherwise. This to me explains the 6:00 pm mayhem of the people and shows one of the flaws in machines ruling mankind (machines expecting humans to behave like machines). Remember this the next time you find yourself at a drive-thru ATM. Who's the boss?

Great! Would buy from this seller again, rec'd order in reasonable time.

3 out of 5 stars Two solid episodes.......2003-09-11

Tomorrow is Yesterday-The first of the contemporary earth episodes is a solid offering about a USAF pilot who ends up aboard the Enterprise. One might be forgiven for not realizing they were watching Star Trek here; the Enterprise doesn't show up until the end of this unusual teaser. This episode explores the trappings of time travel, with every effort the crew makes at not altering the future invariably leading to more modification of the future. If the questions of logic posed by the above aren't taken to seriously (they shouldn't be, in my opinion) this episode is watchable enough. The strongest aspects of this show are the humor behind the cultural (temporal?) differences and a fallible Kirk. In truth though, not that much happens here, and the contemporary Earth idea isn't too interesting 36 years later after the fact. (3 stars)

The Return of the Archons-This creepy if hokey episode concerns cloaked figures and a zombie-like populace. This show isn't particularly thoughtful for a first season episode, and the ending in particular is very unoriginal and disconnected from the rest of the show. The first half of the episode certainly packs enough mystery though, with the creepy creatures and music, as well as the Jeckyl-Hyde aspect of the population. Sulu also has one of his larger roles here. (3 stars)

4 out of 5 stars Yesterday & Return.......2003-06-15

"Tomorrow Is Yesterday" The Enterprise is thrown back in time to the 20th century. How will they get back to their own time?

"Return of the Archons" A computer is ruling a planet & forcing the people to behave strangely. How will it be stopped?

I've been a fan of Mercy Me since "I Can Only Imagine" came out. Although I'm new to the scene, I know one thing.
This DVD changed te way I looked at the band and there music. You get a feel for who they are and why they are so passionate about what they do.
I admit, I cried while watching the making of their Award-Winning Hit. But there's more to it than that. You laugh with them as they go over childhood memories.
I especially liked the Behind the Scenes View of the Dove Awards.
You owe it to yourself and your WHOLE family to watch this amazing take on life in this Godly Band.
Go Bless
