Best of the series to date.......2007-04-20

I enjoyed this one even more than the original. I especially liked the scenes with Jebediah Morningside before he became the evil Tall Man. This movie ends with such a great set up for the final chapter that I can't believe part V hasn't been made yet.

The unused footage from the original movie worked so well here that it was like part IV was written at the same time as the original. Excellent!

I just LOVED the first 3 Phantasm movies and I had to wait 2 years to see this movie and I must say it was a big disappointment. This movie has no apparent story line or cohesion. You get a guy wandering around in the desert, Reggie is still on the hunt and the Tall Man keeps on coming back for more which kinda reminds me of a woman I used to date. Where are the car chases and the beautiful women that Reggie always manages to have sex with? They are nowhere to be seen. I give this movie 5 stars because I still like Reggie's very cool Hemi Cuda.

what cares about plot.......2006-06-23

I don't remember much about Part 4 other than the fact that there's not much action like in Part 2 & 3. It was really boring. And there wasn't hardly any special effects. I tend to purchase even bad horror sequel dvd's from the 70's, 80's, and 90's but this Part 4 Oblivion was so so bad that i never bought this in DVD.

Lacks Continuity.......2006-06-10

To me this is the weakest of the four Phantasm movies.

It gets into time travel where they go back and see The Tall Man as a kindly old undertaker sometime in the 1800s I guess.

To me this is inconsistent with Phantasm 3 where it said that his kind are trying to amass an army of dwarfs because it implies that "his kind" are really human beings.

It is interesting though because back in the 1800s he created the original "dimensional fork".

However trying to make The Tall Man into anything other than pure evil is to me another inconsistency and contradiction. Up until now The Tall Man was a truly frightening character. Also it's not clear to me exactly where he made that transformation from a kindly old gentleman offering lemonade to a destroyer of worlds.

Then Mike ends up having to kill his brother Jody who has somehow turned into a traitor and accomplice of The Tall Man. This is again inconsistent with part 3 and can only be considered to be sacrilegious.

Mike has obtained psychokinetic powers as a result of the golden sphere that was implanted into his skull in part 3.

The Tall Man wants to remove this sphere from Mike's head. But why ? He was the one who implanted it in part 3.

Then their greatest weapon against The Tall Man. The weapon that could save all of mankind. A tuning fork.

Anyway at least Reggie still has his homemade quadra-barrel shotgun.

They may be beating a dead horse with these sequels.

Perhaps a more interesting approach would have been to see how The Tall Man destroyed those other towns. Maybe show how other new characters gradually discovered and tried to defeat The Tall Man.

It was the mystery and gradual discovery that made Phantasm 1 so tremendous. Once you start with characters who already understand The Tall Man at the beginning of the movie something gets lost there I think.

There's probably some profound and deeper meaning hidden in Phantasm 4 somewhere. However I can't tell what that might be.

IT'S JUST THE WIND... .......2005-12-15

Being an avid "Phantasm" fan, I didn't like this film when I first saw it. Now, couple of years later, I watched it again and was slightly surprised because the impression improved. The forth installment to the series may not be as scary as the first one, not as gripping as the second and not as funny as the third, but Don Coscarelli made an unexpectable turn to thoughtfulness and philosophy. We are to discover many unknown and unexplored facts about the Tall Man and the nature of his abilities and creatures. We will be baffled about what's going on, because the story takes an unexpected turn and makes a loop returning to the very beginning. What was all that? A Nightmare? Some paranoid delusion? Just a dream? Or is it real? You'll learn the answers after watching but not all of them, certainly. "Phantasm" was always a kind of a movie where pretty much is left for your own imagination, so here you'll have to ponder too. By the way (in the next sentence there may be a spoiler, you may want to start reading the next paragraph), the ending of the forth part is the only one with no sudden Tall Man appearence and dwarves grabbing some of the characters. Here the finale is more like metaphysical.

The one ingenious discovery by Don Coscarelli here was that he inserted some of not previously used footage from the first "Phantasm". Those are the frames you didn't have a chance to see even in deleted scenes for the first film, and here they matched just right. Coscarelli tied the past and the present together, so we got this strange, sinister and global new phantasm.
But still this is far from seeming to be a closure of the series. The Tall Man is still undefeated, the cities are still being desolated, Jody is still half a man-half a ball :), Mike (who is not dead, but it's hard to say if he's alive either) and Reggie are lost somewhere in time between dimensions. So the forth part looks rather a preparation for the final battle than the end itself. So we are left in suspended animation to wait for the pay-off. I just hope studios will come to agreement, find the financing and help Don Coscarelli finish the quintology. And I hope the last one will finally be written by Roger Avery. Every story has to have an ending.

You won't find a smarter, more amusing, or more accurate send-up of low-budget filmmaking than Tom DiCillo's 1995 independent feature, Living in Oblivion, wherein a motley cast of would-be artistes blunders its way through a day on the set. Steve Buscemi plays goateed Nick Reve, a harried, sweating director whose crew of numbskulls and egotists seems hell-bent on ruining his film. The trials and tribulations of independent filmmaking are not foreign material for writer-director DiCillo, who cut his teeth as Jim Jarmusch's cinematographer on 1985's Stranger Than Paradise before going on to direct his own work, such as the offbeat 1992 comedy Johnny Suede. Like that film, Living in Oblivion rides a precariously thin line between the real and the surreal, featuring a midget actor and an exploding smoke-effects machine, as well as a ridiculously narcissistic Brad Pittesque character played by James Le Gros. While films like Get Shorty, François Truffaut's Day for Night, and Jean-Luc Godard's Contempt suggest that moviemaking is hip and glamorous, Living in Oblivion will have none of that. The film within the film feels like a director's primer on what not to do, and this modest-budget gem both lovingly and caustically strips the "cool" veneer from the filmmaking process. I normally do not enjoy movies about the making of movies, so I was very pleasantly surprised to be thoroughly entertained by 'Living in Oblivion'. The reason I took the chance at all was due to the presence of Catherine Keener, one of our most overlooked and under-appreciated Hollywood actresses. She once again did not disappoint, but the entire cast was extremely good. You get a real education on the frustrations and challenges involved with making a low budget film. Buscemi is also right on target as the stessed out director. The Amazon reviews are for the most part positive about this film and for good reason. I'm glad to join my fellow Amazonians in heaping praise on this low budget gem.

The Experience of making a low-budget movie can't be fun?.......2006-06-06

Living in Oblivion was highly recommended to me by my fellow film crew members, because they all say that we are practically experiencing this film on our shoot. The only difference is this film actually have stars and a budget, dispite the story is about low-budget filmmaking. I found this film hugely entertaining and realistically depicted and I can totally relate to what goes on throughout Oblivion. Yes, a lot of chaos and mishaps take place and in this movie.

Catherine Keener is great as a somewhat well-known actress who has worked on a Richard Gere movie, and now she's the star of a super low budget movie. She has very low confidence in herself as a actress, but the director(Buscemi) still believes in her. He miscast a well-known arrogant male lead who ended up having a one-nite-stand with Keener. The two lead have no chemistry working together on set, and they just can't stand each other anymore. The crew is also kind of nut case. From the cameraman(Dermot Mulroney) who has a disfunctional relationship with the 1st A.D., to the Boom operator who constantly crosses into frame during a take, to the actors not remembering the lines and so on.... It's just so funny. You just wonder how people can work on shows like this.

I really enjoyed watching Steve Buscemi, Keener,Mulrony, and the Sharon Stone look-alike actress who played the 1st A.D.

"Living in Oblivion" is one of those unassuming, low-circulation titles that make you wish your fellow citizens had more taste in cinema because then perhaps Hollywood would try making smarter films more often. Although, at the same time, you're almost glad they don't so you can hoard all these great movie experiences for yourself. The movie, in a nutshell, is about the agony and frustration of trying to make a low-budget film about a woman who was abused as a child and who is about to get married to someone she works with. Steve Buscemi, as the director, tries his damnedest to get the scenes to work, but instead is stymied at every turn: technical difficulties; incompetence by his crew; personal problems with his actors and the his crew; an obnoxious dwarf; and of course, past-its-expiration-date milk. It's these annoyances and hindrances that bring out the best scenes in the movie -- the "real" movie and the "in-production" movie. Buscemi gets to do a couple of his signature explosive outrages, like the Tasmanian Devil, only more coherent and quite a bit angrier (and less hair). Catherine Keener, one of the most underrated actresses in the business today, is smartly sensitive yet brutally honest with her feelings; not quite as sarcastically vicious as she was in "Being John Malkovich" or "Death to Smoochy". Those two actors were ostensibly the reason I originally saw the movie, but I bought the DVD due to the movie's originality, cleverness and humor as a whole. The special features include a few deleted scenes (including one great musical bit with the dwarf actor, Peter Dinklage), and a college film class interview with Dicillo and Buscemi. A screen gem that will have you alternately roaring with laughter and appreciating the way a movie can hit your emotions and your mind in such a sweet, unsuspecting way.

The first downfall is no subtitles or closed captioning. But if you are a fan of low budget campy quirky fun, then backlash is for you. Seeing Julie Newmar and Meg Foster alone is worth the price of the movie.

Fun, but not as good as the first..........2002-08-25

The two Oblivion movies are some of the best, and least known, of the Full Moon films.

This film takes place immediatly after the first. (I think they were filmed at the same time.) The main plot concerns an intergalactic bounty hunter after a sabatour wanted by the galaxicorp. The main suspect is Lash. (Played by the incredible Musetta Vander.) Zack, as sheriff, must help the bounty hunter in his quest.

The film lacks the in-jokes that made the first so fun. Julie Newmar has much more of a role in this one. (I am not certain what to think about her in this. Something about a 60+ year old woman in a form fitting outfit that is kind of frightening. Especially since she still looks good, in a weird plastic surgery Brazil-like way.)

Wondrous Oblivion.......2007-05-13

Thoroughly delightful. Very educational regarding the sport of cricket, little known or appreciated in the US.

Another good movie from Palm Pictures.......2007-05-03

When I was young I would gather my plastic army men and wooden blocks that my brother made me and proceed to orchestrate battles as grand in scope as Iwo Jima. In my mind, the soldiers would bark orders, charge the hills, take schrapnal, and as all wars go many would die. Many a brave little, green man remains buried in my old backyard to this day.

Such is the case in Wondrous Oblivion. (Don't worry, if you can't remember the title you will be reminded about a dozen times throughout the movie, not a bad thing.) David Wiseman wants to be the worlds greatest cricket player, and if heart were the measure of greatness in such a sport, the movie would be over in 10 seconds. In his spare time he collects hundreds of crackerjack cricket cards, much like baseball cards. One of the nicest touches in the film is how these cards are handled when he is alone with them. The writer of the movie has an understanding of the inner workings of a child's mind.

David lives with his jewish family in a predominantly british neighborhood. The neighbors seem to "tolerate" the fact that they are jews, and can only be described as nosey, busy bodies. If you are familiar with Anne of Green Gables - Rachel Lynde on steroids.

The core of the story is the boys love of the game, and how the black family (The Samuels) that have moved in next door teaches him how to overcome his awkwardness and put his heart where his cricket bat is. Surrounding the core is the racial indifference towards the Samuels and Wisemans. One nice scene occurs when Davids father hears a noise outside and goes to the window to investigate. Subtle and powerful.

If there were any complaints about the film, it would have to involve Davids mother and her ever increasing infatuation with Mr Samuels. Though the subject matter is handled tastefully, I think it may be a little much for a pg movie aimed at kids. It may be a little difficult for them to digest, especially one scene. Again though, there is a great lesson learned here and is true to the characters involved. For older children you could take advantage of the situation to teach some morals.

There is a lot to be learned from Wondrous Oblivion: Overcoming obstacles, chasing your dream, and the importance of family. Kids have so few movies to chose from, and so little to allow their own imaginations to work (as computer technology does all the work for them now). It's nice to see movies like Wondrous Oblivion and Secondhand Lions come along which teach can deep lessons - if you want them - but at the very least spark the imagination. Great Film.

Low-key look at emotionally charged issues.......2007-04-04

David Wiseman, a young Jewish boy in 1960s England, is as obsessed with cricket as anyone can be, but he's not any good at it. That he can't hit or catch a ball doesn't seem to have an affect on him. Indeed, as his coach notes, he is in a state of "wondrous oblivion" with regard to his skills, and is assigned to score the games.

Then the Samuels, a Jamaican family, move in next door and Mr. Samuels uproots the small garden in the backyard and replaces it with a cricket net. David is awed, and one evening - against the express wishes of his parents, who indicate that these are not their type of people - David shows up dressed in full kit. Mr. Samuels, kind man that he is, helps David over the fence and bowls to him. It's as obvious to him as it is to everyone that David is terrible, and thus begins their friendship. Mr. Samuels, his daughter Judy, and David all "play" together in the cricket net, and slowly David's skills improve. With David's increasing skills, he announces to the team's coach that he no longer wants to keep score, but that he wants to play, and earns a spot on the team. It's a little difficult to believe that David ramped up his game so quickly. One can tell that the kid isn't terribly athletic, and he struck me as someone who would never benefit from any amount of coaching.

David also develops a close friendship with Judy, and they not only play cricket together, but they study together. Their friendship faces a test when David's teammates become his friends, and when his mother throws him a birthday party she invites his whole team but not Judy. By this time, David's mother, Ruth, is on more than friendly terms with the Samuels, and this omission is glaring. During the party itself, one of his teammates comments on the "nig-nogs" that live next door (that was a new one).

As David's friends are dropped off at his party, Ruth tries to invite the mothers in, but they all decline. Whether this is because the Wiseman's are Jews, or because they live in a different part of town isn't entirely clear, but the Wiseman's own neighbors look down on them for being Jews. This was amazing to me. It was so soon after World War II, England is so close to Germany, I just couldn't believe that such racism existed there. Obviously I'm naïve.

During David's party, while he is opening presents and cards from his teammates, he sees Judy walking over. He runs to the door, accepts her presents, but doesn't allow her in, saying, "My friends are over." The look on Judy's face tells all - she is crushed. Later, when David knocks on her door to play cricket, Judy's mother answers the door and says, "She doesn't want to play with you today. She doesn't want to play with you any day. Take your bat and go."

Notes are delivered to the Wiseman's demanding that they get rid of the "darkies", and the Wiseman's themselves are referred to as "yids" in these notes.

One would think that there is a tremendous amount of tension building in the film, but there isn't. It's as brimming with emotion as a cup of bitter tea served with a dry scone sans butter. This is unfortunate, for the movie had great potential. One only needs to look at films like Billy Elliot to see what this movie could have been. David's accomplishment was something to be cheered, but at no time were we ever encouraged - in this reviewers opinion, at least - to cheer.

Still, it was hardly as monotonous as another reviewer claimed, and did a good job of resolving all of the issues it brought up: racism, sexual tension, etc. As well, the acting was quite good. Nobody stepped outside of their role, and all character interactions, even some surprising ones, were believable. Of greatest interest to me was how they handled the racism within racism: namely, the Wiseman's initial distrust of the Samuels'.

Monotonous And Unpolished.......2007-03-27

'Wondrous Oblivion' is a story that had the potential to be very good; unfortunately it fell far short of what it could have been.

On the positive side, the message communicated is quite good. The story is set in London in the 1960s in a very racially intolerant area. David Wiseman is a young Jewish boy who is also an immigrant from Germany. He and his family face bigotry in their daily lives.

David is obsessed with the game of cricket. He has no talent, but a great love for the game. He has never had anyone to coach him and develop his ability. Then another family of immigrants moves next door. They also face discrimination from the neighbors.

The father, Dennis Samuels, takes young David under his wing and teaches him a lot about the game of cricket and develops his talents. This and some other parts show some great human kindness.

On the negative side, this film is really boring and amateurish. It could have even been worse with the plot built around cricket, which is probably the world's most boring sport. (I once went to a match with some friends in another country and after being bored to tears for about six hours, I found out that they were just getting started on a game that lasts a week or so). The creator did minimize the damage that cricket could do to the movie by not focusing on it too much.

Besides being boring, it was clearly the work of unskilled filmmakers. Either that, or the movie industry is in worse shape even than I thought. I think that from a professionalism standpoint, this DVD is several notches below 'Napolean Dynamite'.

My recommendation would be to pass on this one.

Heartwarming English film.......2007-03-25

David Wiseman is a big cricket fan, but unfortunately he doesn't have the skill to make it on his school team. When a Jamaican family moves next door, the Wisemans at first keep their distance, but eventually David is drawn to the neighbors' friendliness and shared love of cricket. Dennis, the father of the family, takes David under his wing and teaches him the skills of cricket. In the process, David learns something about prejudice and the problems of being a minority. David's family are German immigrants, so he shares some of the problems which the Jamaicans face as well. There are some delightful scenes of parties and dances, but there is also a more serious message to this film.

Okay, this movie....oh man. This horrible clash of genres features over the top and under the top acting, idiotic characters, "special" Effects that are none too impressive and is the worst thing Isaac Hays has ever been involved with. Seriously, this is one ripe for MST3K, folks. Buy it only to torture yourself or other people. I have a long, curse-filled, spiteful review on my website, but I can't post the URL here so whatever. If you are going to buy, BUY USED. Do not waste any extra money on this thing. Spend it on a bag of Oreos or something instead. You'll be glad you did.

Campy fun, but no T&A.......2003-07-03

Oblivion is a campy, fun loving Sci-Fi Western movie that doesn't try to explain itself, nor does it take itself too seriously. If you are a trekky like me, its almost worth the cost of the DVD just to hear George Takei (who plays a drunk doctor) pay hommage to "Bones" McKoy with such wonderful lines as "I'm a doctor dammit, not a magician!" Oblivion has all the stuff you would expect in a B-movie western, including the wooden hero with a problematic past, the nasty villain with a band of losers, the hostage, and the shootout. This is combined with the sci-fi laser guns and bizarre B-grade off-world creatures.

This movie has all sorts of weird scenes. The best without question (also worth the price of the movie) has to be the funeral scene with the simultaneous Bingo game taking place on the second floor. This hilarious combination of sappy funeral speeches with bingo announcements like "B-1" going on in the background is a scream.

And while this movie has a really hot black nylon chick in Musetta Vander (if you're into the Trinity "Matrix" look, get this!), it is truly missing the gratuitous T&A. Musetta (the hot siren from "O Brother Where Art Thou") is hot though, so the movie still survives.

I give it 3 stars on the B-movie scale - T&A would have brought it to a solid 4.

Slower than its sequel but makes more sense........2003-04-04

The best of the stacks and stacks of direct-to-video junk out there.

Self-consciously campy, with stop-motion creatures, and (thankfully) good-natured, with no really objectionable stuff to speak of.

If you hear the words "low-budget" and run for the hills, pass this one up. But if you know and love AIP movies of the late 50's, it's a good bet you will enjoy this. This is as close to the feel of those that I have so far found among modern [movies].

Classic, high camp... with MUSETTA VANDER.......2002-08-28

I love this movie... I first saw it eight years ago and only recently hunted it (and its sequel, Backlash) down as an exorbitantly-priced VHS, even though it meant playing it on a tiny, tinny-sounding TV/VCR.

So, it's a "Sci-Fi Western." Let me see... Was it hokey? Heck, yeah! That's what MAKES the movie. Basically, toss Clash of the Titans, the original Star Trek series, The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension, and a little Jim Henson puppetry into a blender, and you've got a fairly representative perception of what it's like. I have no idea what the budget was, but what it looks like is NOT mainstream Hollywood, NOT trendy-Indie, but very hip and quirky and campy on a well-designed shoestring budget.

The characters are waaay over the top... waaay waaay OVER over the top... even the seemingly straight-played parts by Richard Joseph Paul and Jackie Swanson (Little House on the Prairie really was this tragic, it just wasn't meant to be). And YES, George Takei pokes fun at his Star Trek pigeonholing with wincingly blatant one-liners, but it's so FUN to see him cutting loose (Sulu was awfully straight-laced). Musetta Vander is absolutely DELICIOUS as the black leather-clad, electric whip-wielding Lash. If you've always had a soft spot for really wicked women (with a Bettie Page thing going), you'll fall for her after seeing this. Carel Struycken is so freaking cool, I want to hug him. His voice (I sooo dig his voice) and kind of innocent savant demeanor (but with bits of cold practicality peeking through) reminded me of Andre the Giant in The Princess Bride.

Description

However, Bocca felt that this was wrong and when he heard of the Warriors of Melos, people who still rallied to defeat the monsters, he decided to become on as well. But this isn't an easy path and there was still much to be learned about the Melody of Oblivion.

This is an anime series that even anime fans would get into!
Pros:
Its humor is perfect! Not only do they have the blatant jokes that everyone would get, but they have those hidden jokes that not everyone watching the show will see, along with the jokes that people may see but not get. It's a nice blend of comedy without filling the whole thing with laughter or without makeing the series unrealistic. I don't mean that this scenario is realistic in the first place, what I mean is that you won't see any comedy that people probably wouldn't normally see in Bocca's situation like the type you might see in those series with the really stupid characters.
Another good thing is the actualy plot. It makes you think enough to enjoy watchign it, but it also doesn't make you think too much to the point that your investigating. In every single, err, should I say event (since some last more than one episode) the watcher will be able to see, not only Bocca's point of view of trying to help the humans, but you are also able to see how the humans are dealing with this and their opnion and view on the whole thing. This allows the watcher to leanr more about the minor characters that only show up for a couple of episodes.

Huh, kinda weird...but good.......2005-05-22

First of all, I'm writing this before the DVD is released in the U.S. so I don't know anything about the special features or English dub (if there is any).

I didn't really know what to expect when I started watching this series, so I wasn't really all that shocked when I first saw it (as many people seem to be). Its very hard to catergorize this series but I suppose I would call it action/comedy. After losing a war to the "Monsters", humanity is not well off, they are in constant danger of attack unless human sacrifices are offered to the "Monsters". Bocca, the main character is a Meros Warrior, he and other Meros Warriors like him have the job of fighting the "Monsters" and protecting humanity. The show follows Bocca as he and his allies pursue these groups of "Monsters" and learn more about them.

The show has a very deep story and one really finds themselves paying close attention to it as it develops to find out more about the situation humanity is in and how society copes with it. What greatly helps you to feel the emotion of each scene is the shows very unique art style which relies heavily on symbolism. I admit, though to sometimes being slightly thrown off by it, and having to rewatch certain scenes to grasp whatever message they were trying to convey.

Great music in this series, I recommend getting the OST if you can find it anywhere.

All in all, very good series, although the quality is kind of inconsistent. Some episodes are fantastic while others are somewhat boring without very much plot development. Some people will tell you they hate the ending, but I really think it was great...so yeah, go watch the series.

Very Allegorical, With Gratuitous Fanservice.......2005-04-09

Melody of Oblivion is an anime series rife with cultural references. Everything from Zen Archery and Bushido to Revelations from the Bible, stories of Greek mythology, and images from the Garden of Forking Paths can be seen in the series. Therefore, readers who view this anime without being widely read risk missing prominent references and being unable to appreciate the depth of the tale. [Note: I am the author of the Wikipedia stub about MoO that bears the above introduction.]

Essentially, if you don't like bleeding colors, mystery tales, and plot twists galore, stay away from this series. If horror or fanservice bother you, you should probably stay away as well. Due to the Chutulthoid horror that monsters in the series radiate, random bystanders shriek and lose their sanity (and have additional reactions, which are revealed in the plot) whenever they see them. There is therefore a lot of screaming as well.

It is difficult to fully categorize MoO's all-encompassing style. It can be watched for the appreciation of its unique character and monster designs, for the exquisite timing of its battles, or for the tale itself. The tale is romantic comedy, tragedy, gothic horror, heroic saga, war story, courtly epic, and myth at different points in the series. Overall, it can be considered an allegory about the difficulties that heroes or principled people have in life.
