You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.

Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas

I checked this out at the library and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The dated special effects give it a more gothic feel than the original, and the director's interpretation of the characters is messed up. All in all, worth seeing a few times, but nothing to write home about.

3 out of 5 stars a favorite in spots, beautifully filmed.......2007-05-23

When Return To Oz came out in 1985 I was excited as I am an Oz fan and enjoy the Oz books. I was wondering how they would combine the two Oz Books, Ozma of Oz and The Land of Oz and I have to say at the time I was pleased and saw the film several times. That was years ago and now I see the movie a bit more critically. Many who have read the books and seen the film say it is closer to Baum and yes in parts it is. I love every moment Dorothy is in Oz. Tik-tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and Billina all come to life and are fun to see. Dorothy saves the day and manages to fight the Nome King by just being the strong little girl she is. If this film just took place in Oz it would be perfect, well almost perfect. To my mind the director made a mistake not having the scarecrow and Tin woodman through out the film. Few people knew about TikTok and Jack Pumpkinhead and just assumed they were rip offs of the Scarecrow and Tinwoodman. A continual presence in the film would have helped. Then there is the beginining of the film and it is a nightmare. Why would Aunt Em send Dorothy in for shock treatment? Did she really feel she was sick? To make a long story short they could have made a better introduction for a very good film which would have been much more appealing due to the changes. If this movie were a sandwich I would say the meat or center is good but the bread needs work. Still I enjoy it even today and feel it could have done better.

another great movie that i grew up watching, the scary parts are still a little freaky and i just loved this version as a child. It is very good for opening the imagination, and i will cherish it for a long time!

5 out of 5 stars Great for all ages.......2007-04-05

I first saw this movie as a child, age 8, and ever since I have loved this movie, for the most important fact that it is a darker, and more interesting, adaptation of the Oz story. The dark side of this movie may scare children, as it did myself, but it is not overwhelming or too extreme. In fact, this movie strikes a fine and perfect balance on the darker elements, so that a typical child, over the age of 6 or so, will be scared in a good way. This is because the darker sides of this film are represented by things that children really should watch out for in real life, such as stranger adults, and the temptations to wander to far off from home. The characters are unique and original, and the set designs are a visual treat. This movie is a must see for people who want more substance than the overrated sappy 'The Wizard of Oz' movie with the pathetically timid Judy Garland. In this movie, Fairuza Balk plays a much stronger and compelling Dorothy, who we can respect and believe in. Overall, this movie is far better than any other Oz movie in terms of its dedication to the original books.

A movie's lasting value can often be measured by its influence in the years and decades following its original release, and on that basis Run Silent, Run Deep is certainly a classic of sorts. It remains one of the seminal World War II submarine pictures, and its intelligent script and tautly executed action are clearly echoed in such later submarine dramas as Das Boot and especially Crimson Tide, which borrows liberally from this 1958 film.

In one of his best and final roles (he appeared in only four films after this), Clark Gable plays a submarine captain without a command, having been saddled with a desk job after his previous ship was destroyed due to his overzealous pursuit of the enemy in dangerous Japanese waters. He finally gets another boat--this time with a vigilant first officer (Burt Lancaster), who stands poised to assume command if Gable puts his crew in unnecessary danger. The tension and mutual respect between these two principled men is superbly written and directed (Robert Wise was just two years away from his triumph with West Side Story), and the crucial inclusion of a strong supporting cast (including Jack Warden and Don Rickles) enhances the movie's compelling authenticity. Based on a novel by former submarine commander Edward L. Beach, Run Silent, Run Deep is rousing entertainment with the added benefit of paying honorable tribute to the men who navigated through the most frightening and claustrophobic channels of the Pacific theater. --Jeff Shannon

Description

"Rich" Richardson (Clark Gable) is a hard-driving, dedicated submarine officer with a single-mindedpurposeto seek out and smash the Japanese destroyer he believes sank his former ship. Given a new command, Richardson drills his men to the point of mutiny as he relentlessly trains them for the battle ahead. At last, word comes of the destroyer's position, and, disobeying orders, Richardson finally confronts his foe, unaware that an even greater enemy lurks nearby...one who's been targeting him for a watery grave. Co-starring Burt Lancaster as Gable's executive officer, this gripping WWII adventure-thriller set a new standard for submarine pictures. "Severely, nail-bitingly tense" (The New York Times), Run Silent, Run Deep is the most exciting film about the "silent service" ever made.

4 out of 5 stars High Action Under the Sea.......2007-06-28

Lancaster and Gable dynamically teamed up for a superb action yarn about the Pacific Fleet submarine service of WWII. This film has got to rank with the top-ten, all-time classic movies of WWII. The dramatic story line unfolds on a number of captivating levels, not the least of which is the on-going and developing interaction between the Captain of the American submarine (played by Gable) and his Executive Officer (Lancaster). The audience watches with nervous anticipation as the submarine (U.S.S. Nerca) heads for the most dangerous stretch of Japanese controlled ocean, the Bungo Straights in Patrol Area 7, home of the infamous Akikaze-class destroyer which has already killed four other U.S. boats. One of those unfortunate boats was commanded by Gable, who survived the sinking and managed to later convince ComSubPac that he could kill the Akikaze if given the chance to go back to Area 7 in another submarine. The admirals agreed and gave him command of the Nerca, whose captain had been promoted elsewhere. All's not well onboard the Nerca, however, as the boat's executive officer had expected the command would have been given to him. The crew have misgivings about the new Captain, especially when they discover where their sub is headed. The black and white film's durability into the 21st Century is largely a measure of the superb editing of actual ocean-going footage with the stark, cramped sets of the sub's realistic interior. The special effects are nowhere near the quality of today's modern technology, but are remarkable and credible, nonetheless. An exceptional part of this film is the often overlooked, and excellent musical score that strictly supports the suspense and emotion of the story, never overpowering or distracting the viewer, but consistently and unobstrusively carrying the viewer through one dramatic moment after another. There are a number of memorable scenes between Gable and Lancaster that are innately classic, and which would be almost impossible to duplicate should this film ever be remade. It was a tribute to the officers and men of America's "Silent Service" when it was made, and it remains so today.

5 out of 5 stars Run Silent, Run Deep.......2007-06-26

In veteran director Robert Wise's tense, trim "Run," an aging but vigorous Clark Gable plays Richardson with panache and iron determination. Wise creates just the right mood of simmering hostility via some pointed Gable/Lancaster by-play, and various telling incidents with the crew, which includes a young Jack Warden and Brad Dexter. Mounted by Lancaster's own production company, "Run" remains not only a riveting war film, but one of mega-star Gable's last shining moments. Also look for a future comic in the crew--the inimitable Don Rickles!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Top Sub Films of All Time.......2007-06-01

That guy with the mustache (from Crimson Tide), Cary Grant, puts in a great performance heading for the Bungo Straights with a new tactic to take revenge on the Japanese who sank his first submarine, with great supporting cast. One of the top five submarine film, a must for all fans.

5 out of 5 stars Taut and suspense filled........2007-05-29

Very good movie. Tense suspense filled adventure with a very convincing performance by the cast. Technically very realistic too.

4 out of 5 stars This is the cut off point for the old style sub movies. .......2007-04-06

There are several really good submarine movies about World War II after this. Das Boot comes to mind as one of the best. But they are made in a different era with slicker production or in color. This one is only 13 years out from the war. It stars "the king" Clark Gable, also incidentially, a vet, & a young, rugged Burt Lancaster. There are also interesting character actors like Don Rickles & Jack Warden. In this one Gable is Capt. Richardson, an old sea-dog, desk bound after his ship was sunk. Lancaster is the up & comer Lt. Bledsoe, looking for his first command. Capt. Richardson literally steals the USS Nerko from Bledsoe & asks for him as his XO. The tension is evident & the crew is restive as Bledsoe was very chummy with them. They expected Bledsoe to be the new skipper. Gable drives the crew hard in training & he passes up easy targets. Eventually the method to his madness becomes clear to Bledsoe & the crew. Respect for the old man grows as he's incapacitated & Lt. Bledsoe must take command. They accomplish their mission ...but. One of the great, classic sub movies.

2 out of 5 stars Deep cheap evil.......2005-12-05

The scary title of this movie makes a lot of promises, but sadly when the evil itself is revealed, you will be filled with disappointment. The special effects that are being used already look medieval these days and the aliens are hardly scary.
This movie is a sad attempt to combine some of the great stuff from other movies.(SARR)

3 out of 5 stars NOTHING NEW BUT NOT SO BAD.......2005-08-31

DEEP EVIL offers little novelty in the genetic experiment gone horribly awry genre, but it's decently made and generates a few chills. The movie opens with a doctor escaping from a mysterious lab and accused of being a terrorist. We find out that this secret lab has enforced a lockdown, snaring 14 of its staff for some unknown reasons. We find out too that the lab had cloned an alien organism which if set loose would destroy mankind as we know it. Enter the beautiful doctor, the gallant special ops force and a creepy monster that makes drops of water seem terrifying. Lorenzo Lamas, Ona Greuner, Thomas Scott, Will Sanderson and Adam Morrison do okay in the lead roles and the effects (most of the time) are above average. It has a twist ending that smells of sequelitis? Not bad for a b flick.

5 out of 5 stars If "The Thing" had a sequel...this would be it..........2005-05-04

This movie has a great plot, and pretty good acting. The movie has an extremely EXTREMELY similar plot to the first Resident Evil movie, but has somewhat of a "The Thing" blend to it.

Deep Evil is about a select handful of military ops going on a mission into an underground bio lab to retrieve any surviving members of a lockdown, within the lab. When they reach the lab though..things get dangerous. They find the entire lab covered in water and slime, which has no explination as to how it got there. They then come to find that a "secret experiment" which we later find is named "PB3" is missing from the lab.

Soonafter, the movie gets interesting when the team meets an infected civilian woman, who contracted a virus from the alien or possibly the slime/water in the lab's surroundings, the team then takes her out, after she tries to up the radiation of the lab and kill herself and everyone in the lab.

From then on, the movie only gets better and better, as members of the op. begin to become infected by this virus, and soonafter die.

Then finally the ending...i'm not about to spoil anything, but expect the unexpected. It's not the most "good triumphs over evil" ending, in the world. But it's a good one, for sure.

In the end, "Deep Evil" actually satisfied my thirst for suspense as a horror movie. And the fact that it tied in with a few other movies (Resident Evil 1, Mimic, The Thing) only made it that much more interesting. It wasn't the most original movie in the world, but it was def. worth the 1.5 hours of view to see it.

2 out of 5 stars hohum.......2005-04-17

This movie is something you may have found 10 years ago late at night on the old USA channel, or maybe even the sci-fi channel. It reminded me of the old cheesy roger corman movies. Your left with an ok (over done) plot, you have some ok actors, mixed in with some bad actors. You have some nice computer generated FX, mixed with some cheesy Halloween alien costumes. As a matter of fact I thought the aliens in the movie looked like a complete rip off of the aliens in the movie "Enemy Mine" made back in 1985. This movie was very so/so. I would pass on it. You might be able to see it for free on tv because it has a made for tv feel to it

2 out of 5 stars WOW, What a great movie??.......2005-04-13

I was'nt going to write a review but the only review here was written by a member of the Lorenzo Lamas fan club. He is'nt even the star of this film (Wow, Lorenzo's career is tanking fast)

The production values are bad.
The acting is mediocre.
BUT..the plot is OK.

Deep Evil is not a terrible film, but it is not that good either. Don't pay too much for it.

      5 out of 5 stars Alien Underwater........2004-11-17

That's what I have to say about this one. It's fun to watch if only to see Roddy McDowell and Shatner's daughter in this film. It also stars the first Mr. Fantastic, Alex Hyde-White, from the Corman unreleased Fantastic Four movie. Also appearing in this quick sci fi movie is the Richard Biggs, the doctor on Babylon 5. It's fun to watch the low budget version of alien here. It even has an andriod character that's very much like Data in Next Generation. I have to say it's a keeper because it has so many familiar faces in it.

1 out of 5 stars Mentally challenged film -it's a challenge to watch it........2004-06-23

I went ahead and bought this movie because Roddy McDowall is in it, and I was curious about it being a rip-off of John Carpenter's fantastic movie The Thing. After all, the movie Leviathan was a rip-off of Carpenter's The Thing, and it's pretty decent. Man, was Unknown Origin waste-stink-awful. McDowall was ok in it for the most part, but this is like a horribly gone wrong made for the Sci-fi channel movie (in fact, it is a made for TV movie and it would not surprise me if it was done for the sci-fi channel). Some people have claimed that decent writing helped it to overcome its obvious micro budget. I don't see that at all. It's one thing to do what Leviathan did, it's a whole different thing to lift whole lines and direct concepts from Carpenter's The Thing. If these film makers were not sued, they pry should be. But even with lifted lines and concepts, it could have been watchable for some I guess. This film has more problems than that. Horribly cheesy dialog, very hokey looking sets, terrible glaring costumes, bad lighting and bad camera work made for an awful, awful movie. I'm not sure but I get the feeling that these filmmakers maybe knew better, were somewhat experienced, but needed a fast buck. This is horrible stuff. This is a mentally challenged Wing Commander-ish spoiled cheese fest.

This movie is not to be confused with 1983's Of Unknown Origin staring Peter Weller. Incidentally, Peter Weller was good in the above-mentioned Leviathan, as well as in Screamers. Check them out instead.

4 out of 5 stars great movie for a late night.......1999-11-20

what can anyone say Roddy McDowall is always great and this is no exception...the film moves fast and has some very scary and funny moments...The cast was all good and different...loved Taylor "Rodger Halston" and his cat nip or what ever, he was the babe of the movie and should have end up with the girl. Also great to see Don Stroud he's been around along time and always does a great job. A great movie for the budget and the fear factor was right there.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......1999-02-20

Terrific, "Alien" underwater homage about creature who takes over bodies and minds of undersea mining crew. Hearkens back to the days of the best of 60's drive-in horror flicks! Lots of fun and genuinely creepy at times.

5 out of 5 stars I think I have a little heartburn I can feel it in my throat.......1999-01-22

This movie was about a crew under the ocean who come across something which turns out to be a vampire bug. This creature sucks the life out of eveyone, one at a time and has the crew guessing who it's in next. The ending is a shocker and look out eveyone above It's coming for you! Roddy McDowall was as usual a GEM! LOVE YA RODDY,Anna Marie
