Made the same year as the gory gothic hit The Curse of Frankenstein, this smartly written, philosophically grounded Hammer studios adventure written by Nigel Kneale (who also wrote the excellent science fiction thriller Quatermass and its two sequels) was lost in the flesh and blood of Hammer's new vein of horror. Peter Cushing, best known for his ruthless portrayals of Dr. Frankenstein and his more tempered rationalist skew on vampire hunter Van Helsing, plays another scientist driven to prove his unpopular theories. Against the advice of his wife and a kindly but firm Tibetan monk, he leads blustery American showman Forrest Tucker and his party of explorers up the frozen peaks (the Pyrenees standing in quite spectacularly for the Himalayas) to track the fabled Yeti. When he discovers that this is no scientific expedition but a hunting party he starts to have second thoughts, which are only reinforced by Tucker's mercenary behavior when he kills one of the creatures. Director Val Guest keeps the "monsters" hidden until the final showdown, where their hulking silhouettes loom over the cave entrance, but their mournful cries haunt the camp like wailing ghosts, slowly driving the party members mad. While it lacks the edgy desperation and inventiveness of Kneale's Quatermass features, The Abominable Snowman is a taut thriller that contrasts the gorgeous aerial mountain photography with the claustrophobic atmosphere of the tents and caves of the base camp. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Featuring Uncensored Footage Not Seen In The Sci Fi Channel Broadcast! It has been sighted 42,000 times in 68 countries, a vicious creature of myth and legend called Sasquatch, Yeti, and perhaps most infamously, Bigfoot. We've hunted it for years. But what happens when it decides to hunt us? For newly paraplegic mountain climber Preston Rogers (Matt McCoy), the horror hits home when this ravenous beast attacks a remote forest community. Will its next hot meal be a group of knucklehead hunters (including Lance Henriksen of ALIENS & Jeffrey Combs of RE-ANIMATOR), a skeptical police chief (Paul Gleason of DIE HARD), a cabin full of nubile co-eds (including Ashley Hartman of THE O.C.), or a trapped Preston himself? Rex Linn (CSI: MIAMI) and Dee Wallace-Stone (CUJO) co-star in this wild and gruesome horror shocker that Fangoria calls "the best serious fright film ever made about Bigfoot!"

4 out of 5 stars Very well done movie.......2007-06-10

When i first saw this movie on Sci-Fi channel, i wasn't really sure about the film at first, however, after seeing it on TV, i truly loved the film and then when i saw it on Amazon, i knew i had to have it cause its that good. There hasn't been a decent Sci-Fi channel original movie in some time till this movie was made, i was truly surprised by it and it has now become one of my favs. This movie is a great pick up to any horror fan and worth the money. Highly Recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly good!.......2007-05-27

Low budget horror can be good. Who knew? After the garbage that fills Blockbuster (especially those cheap Asylum "movies") I went into this movie and didnt expect much, and was suprised to find this movie entertaining. Definitely worth a rent.

4 out of 5 stars One Sassy Sasquatch!..........2007-04-11

Okay, yes, the creature does resemble a titanic hillbilly. However, he's just big and vicious enough to make up for it! I mean, he bites a guys face off for heaven's sake! As for the plot, it's fairly basic, yet kept me watching, cringing, and laughing in all the right spots. Matt McCoy makes a great wheelchair-bound Preston Rogers, overcoming impossible odds to battle the hideous yeti. Haley Joel (Amanda) is believable in her terror. Of course, Tiffany Shepis is awesome as always! Her character is bumped off in one of the best death scenes I've ever seen! Then, there's the use of horror legends Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak), Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Near Dark, Millenium), and Dee Wallace-Stone (Cujo, The Howling, The Frighteners) in cool cameos! We even get Paul Gleason (Breakfast Club, Trading Places, Die Hard) as the sheriff! Oh yeah, this movie is a keeper...

4 out of 5 stars The Hendersons Wouldn't Be Too Happy With This Guy.......2007-02-19

One of the greatest of guilty pleasures is the Bigfoot genre. About 99% of these films are total schlock, coz really, how serious can you take the concept of a rampaging Bigfoot? Abominable is a neat little film that's not afraid to realize it's schlocky nature, but at the same time has the balls to attempt moments of suspense. Whether or not the suspense is effective is up to the viewer. The suspense is in the form of the monster carnage being witnessed through the binoculars of the wheelchair bound leading man as the monster terrorizes the women in the neighboring house. These scenes are actually pretty cool, and definitely bring to mind Rear Window. Matt McCoy does an adequate enough job in the lead, the women are only there for eye candy and Bigfoot food. Genre favorites Jeffrey Combs and Lance Henriksen are amusing enough, but wasted in tiny roles that has you wondering what the point was to having them in the film at all. They certainly deserve more screen time than they got. Regardless of what many folks may say, the monster is actually rather cool. In a day and age where every friggin monster anymore has to be some cgi piece of crap, it's a joy to see the ol "man in a monster suit". And considering the schlockiness of the film anyway, it suits it(no pun intended) perfectly. This movie isn't afraid of bloodshed either. The kills are quick, but gruesome. You won't see Abominable at the academy awards next year, but it's a welcome piece of B monster movie nonsense that's been missing from video shelves for awhile.

3 out of 5 stars Act your age, Baby, not your Shoe Size, & maybe we can do the Twirl.......2007-02-05

Ok, man, let's do some roleplay: you're Bigfoot. Sasquatch. The Abominable Snowman. I mean, you're a Big Guy, you're buff, you work out at the gym about 5 times a week, you can bench press 380 without breaking a sweat, you're hot, you're young, you're happening.

And you can't get a date.

What's a rough and ready, frustrated, desperate Housesquatch to do? You want to mosey on into town, you wants to get your jive on, get your drink on, you want to get jiggy with some of the local hardbodied babes, where's the harm, man?

I'll tell you where the Harm is: every time Bigfoot checks out the local muchachitas, they scream. They take one look at Bigfoot, they scream bloody murder. How's that for a Dude's self esteem? It's like being in high school all over again. He's thinking "oh my God, is it the hair? Does this animal-skin make my butt look fat?". The works. The Big Guy's a total wreck.

So he tries to get them to chill: maybe he says "hey babe, it's OK, what's your sign?" except, because he's a Bigfoot, it comes out all growly scary like Phil Anselmo just off one of his Superjoint Ritual roadtrip jags: `Gaaarrrrrgh grwoooowwl rowgrrrrr". And of course, the chick screams her head right off.

Now: there are rules for meeting the Sasquatch;

1)No sudden moves. Bigfoot (feet) don't like sudden moves. It makes them grouchy. Grouchy Bigfoot=Bad;

2)NO SCREAMING

So the Bigfoot tries to put the moves on the chick, to, you know, calm her down. He takes her arm, he's gonna console her. He's gonna show her some big piney mountain lovin'.

Only, well, he's a 1000 pound man eating brute, he doesn't know his own strength, and so her arm, um, comes off.

Bummer.

It doesn't have to happen like that: the girl could go all dovey and pet bigfoot's fur, and coo "oh Bigfoot, you have some----reaaaallly---BIG FEET" or "you're so abominably...HUGE". He'd melt. He'd be a little kitty cat. They'd head down to Cancun for the weekend together. But you know, this is life, and life, especially for Bigfeet, just ain't all that.

The lead actor (who looks ominously, eerily, like Steve Carrell) realllllly takes his role seriously. He means it. He's serious, even if nobody else is. He's the kind of guy who probably spent time in the director's trailer quibbling over, maybe even REWRITING, bits of his dialogue. The guy is a true believer, bully for him; meanwhile walk-ons Jeff Combs, Lance Henriksen, & Paul Gleason are, you know, flying casual.

Anyway, Lead Actor arrives, trying to get past the horrific grief of his wife taking a grand jete over the nearby cliff, and figures out the hot chicks next door in Cabin #2 have more on their minds than the next Federline CD: like, how to survive becoming kibble for the bummed-out Bigfoot. Hilarity ensues.

Lead Actor Guy does what he has to do to Save the Day. And ya know, he does, somewhat, though not from Bigfoot's perspective, who pays his club cover-charge and, yet again (*sigh*) goes home empty handed.

The flick misses a few obvious cues, particularly the mighty creepy potential left on the barrelhead of stalking the Bigfoot---and being stalked in turn, hunted down, tracked---in the Big Tall Spooky Woods. It would have been cool if somebody had used a Bazooka. There are no *real* scares here, and the Bigfoot, given all the Hell he had to deal with, should have unleashed Holy Jihad on Lead Actor Guy and taken a dump on the ruins.

But one thing's for sure: never judge a Bigfoot until you've walked a mile in his, um, Big Feet.

This item arrived in time for the christmas holidays which made the overall experience great!!

1 out of 5 stars Still NOT completely remastered.......2007-01-19

In the item notes for this DVD it claims it is remastered. Though it is not as poor quality as the 2004 DVD, it still has black dots and white scratches in the picture. Is CBS the only place you can find the completely remastered version? This is NOT worth $14.99, more like $4.99. Remaster the thing or don't supply it. :(

Yes, it is I, the Edit Avenger!!
Here to protect freedom and original art from plunderous corporations and soulless individuals!!!!

If you are considering purchasing a 2004 or later release of 'Rudolph', think twice. It is edited.

I just ordered the original 2002 UNEDITED/no Destiny's Child 'Rudolph' DVD from eBay express. I got it sealed for $6.99 + $3 shipping.

Do NOT buy edited DVDs when you can avoid it. Let's send the message. If you don't think that you make a difference remember this:
Consumer complaints about the edits in 'Beavis and Butthead Mike Judge Collection Vol 1' were 100% of the reason that volumes 2 and 3 were released with absolutely NO edits whatsoever to the material.
Good for us!

Edits are for losers!

I have spoken.

1 out of 5 stars Rankin/Bass Holiday DVD Collection.......2006-12-02

I agree with Michael Agostino's comment below. I think all of their holiday specials (Halloween, Christmas, and Easter) should be in one collection together. I would sort it this way:

Disc One:
Mad Monster Party
Mad, Mad, Mad Monsters
Cricket on the Hearth
The Mouse on the Mayflower

Disc Two:
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Rudolph's Shiny New Year
Frosty the Snowman
Frosty's Winter Wonderland
Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July

Disc Three:
The Little Drummer Boy
The Little Drummer Boy, Book II
Nestor, The Long-Eared Christmas Donkey
'Twas the Night Before Christmas
The Stingiest Man in Town

Disc Four:
Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town
The Year Without a Santa Claus
The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
Santa Baby! (I know it may not be that good, but it is still from Rankin/Bass)

Disc Five:
The First Christmas
Jack Frost
Pinocchio's Christmas
The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold

Disc Six:
Here Comes Peter Cottontail
The First Easter Rabbit
The Easter Bunny is Comin' To Town
Bonus Features

Each special would be in its original version as it was first aired on television. However, I would keep Frosty Returns and The Legend of Frosty the Snowman out of this collection. This could be a best-seller for Rankin/Bass!

1 out of 5 stars ..not the same as earlier edition, sigh!.......2006-11-26

I recently purchased a copy of this edition, having loaned a niece with children my copy from a couple of years ago (which I may not get back...but that's okay) last Christmas. It's a let-down from the other version; the interview with Arthur Rankin (informative) is missing, the scene where Yukon finds his dream as Rudolph and Santa are leaving Christmastown is cut out (one of the key scenes deleted from the TV airings to make room for ads) again, yet the question on the trivia game on it is there. The Destiny's Child video is okay for the younger audiences but..me, I have an idea; why not a little info and maybe footage of who first popularized the song in the first place: Gene Autry?

I just ordered another copy of the older edition from 2000.

3 out of 5 stars "Tonight on the C.B.S. late-night movie".......2007-04-03

If you grew up in the 70's like me you remember that phrase well. In a time before cable and V.C.R.'s, us old timers had to watch what came on and even had to go to the T.V. to change the channel(unless you could afford the high priced remote T.V.'s of the day). Every Friday night children like myself were treated to an episode of "The Night Stalker" (The best show ever to me at the age of 11) and at least one or two horror movies. "Snowbeast" was one of about five movies that showed up regularly on those long ago nights("Shock waves, "The Devil's Rain", "Race With The Devil" ,and "Terror At 37,000 Feet" rounded out the others) and at least every three to four months one would play.
The story, about a Bigfoot like snow monster was played as "Jaws" in the snow. At the age of 11 this movie was silly, but very cool and even scary at times. With fond memories I bought this one and sat down to get lost in it again one Friday night. Well I'm not 11 anymore and most of the scares are very lame now, but i still felt some magic as this piece of cheese unfolded in front of me. The actors try hard to give this "chiller"(snow, chiller get it!) some life and sometimes in spite of it's self it works.
Not for all taste to be sure, but if you are old enough to remember it, some small amount of fun can be had watching it, I recommend a snowy Friday night at about 12:00 o'clock

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT DEAL IS LEFT TO THE IMAGINATION -- PERHAPS TOO MUCH FOR MANY VIEWERS.......2006-10-21

FIRST THOUGHTS: WITH GORE DOMINATING THE HORROR GENRE IT'S NICE TO SEE THE IMAGINATION CALLED UPON AGAIN

For me it is sad to see that most people found 'Snowbeast' to be boring and trivial. I say this because I have enjoyed watching this admittedly tame TV creature-feature with my daughter for the past 15 years. I introduced it to her on Video, having recalled seeing it as a TV movie when it was first released in 1977.

Yes, 'Snowbeast' promises more than it delivers, but I was able to feel OK when allowing my youngsters to watch this rather tame creature-feature which kept their interest without giving them nightmares.

IN A NUTSHELL: SNOWBEAST MAY BE A JAW'S RIP-OFF BUT JOE STEFANO IS AN EXCELLENT SCREENWRITER

One of the reasons that I wanted to see 'Snowbeast' when it was first on TV, nearly 30 years ago, was that the screenwriter, Joe Stefano, was the screenwriter for the original 'Psycho', directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and many of my favorite 'Outer Limit's' episodes. He always gives a good account of himself by forcing the viewer to use his/her imagination to enrich the experience. This works for me, but clearly the expectation of many creature-feature fans is for more explicit action and a more original plot. I do agree about the originality of the plot, but as for a more explicit tone, I think that sometimes less is better. This can of course be seen by some as promising more than is delivered. It is interesting to note that the film 'Tremors' which has been very well recieved, is even more of a rip-off of 'Jaws' than 'Snowbeast', yet it is a well-crafted film which includes quite a bit of gory horror.

BOTTOM LINE: LIKE AN ORIGINAL OUTER LIMITS EPISODE BY THE SAME WRITER

It is probably safe to say that if you liked original 'The Outer Limits', which had about 1/3 of its episodes written by 'Snowbeast's' screenwriter, you will like 'Snowbeast' which has always seemed to me like an 'Outer Limit's' double episode.

HERE'S ANOTHER WAY TO PURCHASE SNOWBEAST ON DVD THROUGH AMAZON:

If you want to see this film, you can get it on DVD with 2 other films, 'Creature' and 'Track Of The Moon Beast'. The exact title is 'Classic Creature Movies II (Creature / Track Of The Moon Beast / Snowbeast)' and currently it sells for $5.98 direct from Amazon or from $3.43 via numerous Amazon sellers

3 out of 5 stars not a bad flick.......2006-09-13

I saw this movie on tv back a few years after it came out when I was around 16 years old. I enjoyed it and recently purchased it again. It has its duller moments with the conversations and small talk in between scenes of the creatures actions. The creatures face isnt visable much but I never had a problem with that anyway. The scenery is beautiful and this was one smart creature knowing how to trash a camper (what bad luck they had) with a pile of logs. anyway, for the price its a cool flick I liked it.

2 out of 5 stars "It's pretty obvious she wasn't murdered, only human things commit murder and whatever did that wasn't even halfway human.".......2006-05-30

Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975) brought about a number of things, the first and foremost being an unprecedented level of worldwide success, the second being a few sequels (including one in 3-D), and last but not least a plethora of generally cheap imitations just itching to leech off the gravy train, in this case a lackluster, made for TV feature titled Snowbeast (1977). I should mention I don't necessarily mind Hollywood's continual cannibalization in order to squeeze every bit of profit from a premise as possible, but I do mind overly obvious, lacking in effort rip offs, such as we have here. Directed by Herb Wallerstein ("I Dream of Jeannie", "The Brady Bunch", "The Six Million Dollar Man"), the telefeature stars Bo Svenson (North Dallas Forty, Heartbreak Ridge), Yvette `Weena' Mimieux (The Time Machine, Where the Boys Are), and Clint Walker (The Dirty Dozen, Yuma, Killdozer). Also appearing is Robert Logan (The Adventures of the Wilderness Family, Mountain Family Robinson) and Sylvia Sidney (Madame Butterfly, Blood on the Sun), whom I best remember as the character Juno, the chain-smoking social worker in the afterlife from Tim Burton's Beetle Juice (1988).

As the movie begins we see a couple of female skiers shushing down the mountain. One of them wants to turn back because she feels uneasy, but the other thinks she's being foolish...guess who gets it? Back at the lodge preparations are underway for the annual winter carnival, including the hanging of a banner stating "A day and night weeks orgy of fun and games"...well all right...Tony Rill (Logan), the manager, gets word one of his guests has gone missing, and he organizes a search party. After finding a bloodied and tattered ski jacket, the surviving girl relates a tale of how a monster got her friend. Tony's grandmother (Sidney) wants to keep things hush hush, as not to spoil the upcoming events. Soon Tony's friend and washed up former Olympic gold medalist skier Gar Seberg (Svenson) makes the scene with his wife Ellen (Mimieux), as Gar is hoping to land a job at the resort. I should probably mention Ellen is a television journalist, one who just happened to do a story on Bigfoot not too long ago. Soon the missing skier's body is found (sans her face), and Sheriff Cole Paraday (Walker) makes the scene. As the creature claims another couple of victims, Ellen begins snooping around, and Tony, the Sheriff, and Gar make plans to eliminate the growing threat (Gar the pacifist was against the idea at first, but after seeing the remains of the mutilated woman, he's all on board now). After an attack on a school gymnasium during the crowning of the snow queen (and yet another murder), Sheriff Paraday, Tony, Gar, and Ellen decide to head up the mountain and kill the murderous beast once and for all, but it ain't that easy as the creature is smart, smart enough to trash their camper and steal their weapons...the hunters have now become the hunted, and it seems like nothing, nothing human at least, is going to make it off that mountain alive...

Snowbeast is pretty much what you might think it is, a forgettable TV made knock off whose only intent at the time was to capitalize on the popularity surrounding the films Jaws. If there was any doubt in my mind towards this, it was satisfied during one, particular sequence. At one point news gets around the sheriff bagged the creature responsible for the deaths. Turns out he ended up killing a bear (most of the population wasn't aware exactly what was responsible for the recent maulings), the intent being to put the townspeople and tourists minds at ease. Gar and Ellen happen to be on hand, and they have a good idea the bear wasn't the creature responsibly for the recent spate of deaths due to the fact they only just recently had a run in with the real monster. Gar suggests to the sheriff they cut the dead bear's stomach open, and see what it had been eating, as to verify if in fact it truly is killer. If you've seen the film Jaws, you'll recall a very similar scene after a large shark is captured. Oh, and let's not forget the cover up perpetrated to ensure the carnival goes off without a hitch and tourist dollars keep flowing...anyway...between the seemingly excessive amount of padding shots (skiing and snowmobile sequences), there is something of a story, populated by a lame group of characters. The script really isn't very good, and features some painfully forced drama, particularly between the characters of Gar, Ellen, and Tony (seems Ellen and Tony had a history before she chose to marry Gar). This sets up a really unintentionally funny uncomfortable moment as Tony comments on Ellen's beauty right in front of Gar, who can't really say anything since he's come to the resort in hopes of find a job. Another fine example of the excremental scripting comes when Gar finally relates to Ellen why he hasn't picked up a pair of skis since he won the gold during a not so recent Olympics...ugh (where's that damn face ripping sasquatch when you really need him?). Yvette Mimieux is worth hanging around for, as she's just as hot in the mid 1970s as she was when she appeared in the film The Time Machine (1960), but at a diminutive 5' 4", she must have felt miniscule among the cast given the prominent male actors in the film were all six feet plus (Logan was 6' 3", Svenson 6' 4", and Walker a whopping 6' 6"). Given the gigantism of the male leads, I kept hoping for a scene where at least one of them got into a hand to hand battle with the Bigfoot monster, but it never happened. There are a few, extremely brief shots of the creature, but otherwise everything else is limited to endless point of view shots, lots of growling, and ominous musical cues as the creature stalks its prey. There's virtually no blood anywhere to be found, but that not surprising given this was intended for television audiences (so much so you can see the obvious commercial break insert points as various scenes fade out, in blood red, no less). About the only reason to check this feature out is to see Yvette Mimieux in a tight snowsuit, but other than that, the movie is about as much fun as smacking yourself in the forehead with a two by four.

The picture quality, presented in fullscreen, on this Legacy Entertainment DVD release is fairly rotten. It's grainy, muddled, and I wouldn't doubt if the original source here was a VHS tape. The audio, which is supposedly in Dolby Digital, isn't much better, as the first hour its very soft, almost impossible to hear at times. After an hour, it kicks up dramatically, for whatever reason (make sure to have the remote handy about an hour in, especially if you've got the volume cranked). There are no extras included, but there are chapter stops.

5 out of 5 stars Not bad at all!.......2005-08-08

I don't get all of the negative reviews. This is a good horror movie. The acting is really good, the snowbeast scared the crap out of me, and the whole movie is just done well. No, this is not as good as Hammer Film's The Abominable Snowman, but it still is a good Yeti flick. Check it out, if you like Yeti movies, I think you will like this.

This classic 1964 television special featuring Rudolph and his misfit buddies set the standard for stop-motion animation for an entire generation before Tim Burton darkly reinvented it in the early 1990s. Burl Ives narrates as Sam the Snowman, telling and singing the story of a rejected reindeer who overcomes prejudice and saves Christmas one particularly blustery year. Along the way, he meets an abundance of unforgettable characters: his dentally obsessed elf pal Hermey; the affable miner Yukon Cornelius and his motley crew of puppies; the scary/adorable Abominable Snow Monster; a legion of abandoned, but still chatty, toys; and a rather grouchy Santa. In addition to the title song that inspired it, this 53-minute tape is crammed with catchy tunes such as "Silver and Gold" and "Holly Jolly Christmas." 1 out of 5 stars Poor and a Bore!.......2007-06-16

In the prominent, well-known, and award-winning movie Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer, FHE, (which is) also known as Family Home Entertainment, presents the most famous cartoon of Christmas. With all of its history and fanfare one would not expect a disappointment. Incessantly and irritatingly, though, Burl Ives wrecks the film as he interrupts, dances, and sings throughout all of the key moments in the movie! Perhaps singing and dancing make for a family-friendly movie, but at what expense? Leaving this narrative without any content rating whatsoever, the producers of the film neglected also to provide any content because they were more concerned about its suitability. Rudolf the reindeer relinquished its' ratings. To be fair though, the qualities that are lacking for some must have been heavily compensated for in the eyes of others in order to receive award-winning film status. If any movie escaped having been rated less than this classic, I must have missed it. Despite its shortcomings, the film succeeds in producing a very clean and prize-achieving storyline.

As you may not be aware of, this is the story of a dumb deer, bestowed with the name of Rudolf, and who lives in a fantasy setting. As described, the narrator of the story is the talking snowman that follows Rudolf in his travels as a likeminded misfit, and consequently he gradually, and yet somehow calmly melts to death when nobody is looking. This is not revealed however. Dotting the landscape with white snow, the leitmotif weather of Christmas annoys viewers with a bland background of white snow. Within this setting appears a young deer named Rudolf with what appears to be an irritating pimple on his nose. It is so big that it looks like a cherry tomato. He tries his best to cover it with mud because it is not just an ordinary pimple. It has the magical ability to glow like a nightlight! In addition to this defect, Rudolf and all of the other young reindeer have small horns that stick out of their heads like lumps of black licorice. Now, is that not silly? This important youngling also runs away since he is made fun of and meets up with a complete stranger. This stranger is a toothless runaway elf who wants to be a dentist! And so the portrayal of Rudolf continues as he squeaks about with a high voice and a short outcast of the elf society.

Although scarcely a conflict, the storm that had arisen became so strong that it prohibited Santa from applying navigation techniques, and because he was too dumb to have his elves create a flashlight, he was just about to cancel Christmas. The storm was a blanket. Santa, (who was) previously regarded as not so bright, now fires his toothless dentist wannabe. This brings Rudolf full circle. Meeting up with this ostracized elf, Rudolf seeks a new life so he teams up with the dwarf. Along the way, these two misfits meet an ignominious, oblivious, and selfish man who licks gold for a living and whose name is Cornelius. Cornelius helps them to ward-off the Abominable Snowman. After they had pretended to escape this defenseless giant, the three characters moved on to a greater cause, leaving their past in the tumult of Global Climate Change. The world's toymaker primarily suffers however from the inability to see though a storm and he has to find a solution other than search lights and that becomes the highlight of the movie at this point in the narrative.

Rudolf finally discovers hope. Above the wreck of confusion the two absentminded teenagers, (who were) having trouble fighting, racing, and competing with the storm, finally reappeared at their homes. Santa had been patiently waiting for the two because he wanted to reward them. Surprising even the smartest critic, these two outcasts saved Christmas. The poor old Abominable Snowman that I mentioned earlier is invited to top the Christmas tree with a star. The tree had been erected as a part of the huge celebration for Rudolf, who could light the way through the storm with his nose and prevent Christmas from being cancelled. Unfortunately this version of the film shows the narrator being left outside in the lonely cold and kept out of the marvelous party. If he was upset, the poor snowman did not show it, for he actually chuckled to see the outcasts enjoy themselves before they would be put to hard labor the next day. This ends the silly adventure of the pair of lazy kids. They lived happily ever after.

Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer is a rather depressing film because it unfortunately had a sinister motive. Rudolf actually indoctrinates little kids. Unfortunately, Rudolf the reindeer, (who was) previously regarded as being up to no good, is a movie that seems to say O.K. to running away from home but only to return after being chased by a curious monster and a snowstorm. When I am told that this movie is a classic, I laugh because classic means different things to different individuals. Even the dramatic Gone with the Wind is regarded as a classic, but classic does not mean interesting, moral or even instructive as classic probably had been defined in the past. (The phrase, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a @#!$%^&*()_+" is considered a classic but would not have survived a normal children's cartoon.) Because of the fact that Rudolf escaped any content ratings at all disturbs me. The video jacket describes the film as being harmless and suitable for all audiences but fails to warn consumers of the possible side effects which may include drowsiness, boredom, and addiction to pain killers and even death from brain inactivity. Judging this movie personally, I will agree that it is entertaining for children, but so are the Power-Rangers, Tellie-Tubbies, and Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles. I personally believe that Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer is a poor movie that should not be placed on the shelf labeled classics.

5 out of 5 stars "That's Man's Work!".......2007-04-17

I love how this movie not only tells a story but depicts the times in which it was made. The Doe stay at home in the cave while Rudolph's Dad and Santa go out and do the "Man's work" (to use his words) of searching for Rudolph. Ironically, if it hadn't been for the woman going out in search of Rudolph, all the men would have probably died. Still, I think some of the comments made were a real depiction of the mindset of the time period and it makes me laugh every time I watch it. Everytime Rudolph's Daddy says that, I look at my fiance' and (jokingly) say "That's right! You heard him! It's MAN's Work!"

A great holiday classic full of laughter, fun and adventure. And the story of Rudolph speaks to one thing in particular. Our differences make us unique but those differences don't have to be a hinderance. They can be a gift. In the hands of a powerful spirit, a weakness can be transformed into a strength.

Thanks for teaching generations of kids that very valuable lesson!

1 out of 5 stars Bad DVD quality.......2007-06-11

I ordered this item simply because I wanted the movie on DVD (I already have it on VHS). This had got to be the absolutely worst quality I have ever seen on a DVD. If you are looking for a copy of Boggy Creek on disc, do NOT order this one. Hunt for an older version (as in the original DVD issue). This particular copy is a waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars Not DVD Quality.......2007-02-26

I purchased this to find out what was in the missing 3 minutes of another version I have (87 vs 90 minutes). While this DVD included the missing footage, the quality was poor for a DVD. It also had a different cover than what was pictured on the web site.

5 out of 5 stars THE TRUTH...THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK.......2007-02-23

YES YES I KNOW THE MOVIE WAS CHEAPLY MADE...BUT DONT YOU SEE IT ALL FITS...IT MAKES ONE NICE PACKAGE...ALL IN ALL VERY MUCH WORTH THE TIME AND MONEY TO BE ABLE TO SIT DOWN LATE IN THE EVENING WITH YOUR MIND OPENED WIDE READY TO ABSORB ALL YOU CAN ABOUT THIS VERY REALISTIC CREATURE FEATURE...SO...MY VOTE IS A SOLID THUMBS UP FOR THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK...A SIMPLE BUT AT THE SAME TIME A VERY COMPLEX TREAT FOR THE MIND...SO DROP THE DIME ON THIS ONE...YOU WONT BE SORRY...ENJOY...GOD BLESS TEXAS.

3 out of 5 stars THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK.......2007-02-14

SLOW DOWN AND WATCH THIS ONE LATE IN THE EVENING.
IT SEEMS SO REAL. A REAL POSSIBILITY. THE VIDEO QUALITY COULD BE BETTER. A LOT OF THE MOVIE DEPENDS ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES AND IMAGINATION.

3 out of 5 stars A movie you want to watch over and over.......2007-02-14

I watched the Movie Legend of Boggy Creek years ago when
it first came out and liked it then and I like it now.
The music is catchie and some of the places looked spooky.
I passed through Texarkana years ago and I talked to one
person at a gas station and he said "Awa shocks that story
was just a hoax" but others said differently. You have to
make your own mind up if you think it is a hoax.
The movie is old therefore it is not the best quality but
I will still watcher it from time to time. I know it by heart.

Innovative use of new technology has given rise to a truly original video adventure in which viewer choice determines both the characters' course of action and the very outcome of their journey. Based on the Choose Your Own Adventure book series, the new CGI animated Choose Your Own Adventure: The Abominable Snowman begins with the three North siblings, Benjamin (Frankie Muniz), Crista (Lacey Chabert), and Marco (Daryl Sabara), who are following their Uncle Rudy (William H. Macy) to the Himalayas in Nepal on a quest to find the elusive Yeti (Abominable Snowman). Before the kids even arrive in Nepal, viewers are called upon to decide with their remote control whether the group should parachute out of a malfunctioning plane or ride out a tough emergency landing. Once in Nepal, the group's path necessitates making a multitude of choices between opposing actions. Should they choose the conservative or adventuresome path? Follow a trusted guide or an apparently well-meaning stranger? Choose personal comfort or tenacious perseverance to the quest? Unlike most video games and interactive DVD features, there are no "wrong" decisions; each of the choices leads to a full length, yet distinct adventure with viewer's choices determining the very outcome of the adventure. In fact, viewers can potentially watch the movie eleven times and experience a different scenario with a varying outcome each viewing.

An excellent 28-minute bonus feature details life in Nepal and features real photography of Nepal's citizens going about their daily lives intermixed with interviews and footage of students from Seattle's Hamilton International Middle School and students in their sister school Kaveresthali in Katmandu, Nepal. The entire feature is accompanied by informative narration by Kate Fleming that touches upon Nepal's topography, customs, food, transportation, forms of employment, and primary religions. Other bonus features include a music video of the theme song and a behind the scenes featurette featuring actor and producer commentaries about the making of the show, individual characters, and the immense research that contributed to the authenticity of the program. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars The Abominable Snowman DVD.......2007-01-16

It was very cute and the grandchildren I gave it to were very "into it ".

Anything that gets them more involved with reading and stories is great. They are all 5 years old and it's the perfect time to really intensify the reading the family has incorporated into their lives since they were babies.

I also loved the little "making good choices" lessons it taught subliminally through the children's choices made during the story.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Spectacular.......2006-09-06

What a great idea. My godson and his siblings love it. It's a pretty unique offering to find something that's as educational as it is entertaining. Can't wait for the next one!!!

This is the first video from an old series of books that my kids love because they keep reading them different ways to get different endings. They like the video, because they get to choose which way to go at various junctures in the adventure, but all in all the video was short and not very robust.

Hard-core fans of Kevin Smith (auteur of Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma) will find Drawing Flies essential viewing. This Canadian film features many actors who would later appear in Smith's own directorial efforts, including Jason Lee, Renee Humphrey, Carmen Lee, and Jason Mewes (better know as Jay of Jay and Silent Bob). Lee plays Donner, the unofficial leader of a troupe of slackers who've just been kicked off of welfare. Donner convinces his friends that what they need to turn their lives around is a camping trip; but as they go deeper and deeper into the Canadian forests, Donner grows increasingly erratic and finally reveals that visions have told him to search for Bigfoot. Smith has a cameo in his Silent Bob persona. Non-fans can probably leave this one on the shelf. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars ADMIT IT, THIS IS A BRILLIANT FILM.......2007-01-30

VIEW ASKEW PRODUCTIONS
PRESENTS
DRAWING FLIES

Like almost everybody else I went out and bought this film based on the fact that it was a View Askew Production and starred Jason Lee. But unlike almost everyone else who has viewed this film I think that this movie is brilliant. I' am sure people who are reading this and have seen the film are gasping, but if you really sit down and watch the film for what it is I guarantee you will believe the same as me.

The story follows a group of friends who live in Canada and are all about to be kicked out of their apartment due to the fact that they have no jobs and are not granted welfare. Donner, who is the unofficial leader of the group decides he wants to go find Bigfoot or a sasquatch as he likes to point out. Knowing his friends will never go for it he decides to trick them into following him on this exhibition by saying his Uncle has a cabin in the woods that they can stay in. Since they will no longer have an apartment to live in they decide [some reluctantly] to accompany him on this trip. As they go deeper and deeper into the woods Donner starts to lose his grip on sanity and the group is even ran off by a group of men in large diapers. Az even falls from a tree and gets messed up pretty bad, and when his cut gets infected it becomes life threatening. So with no where to go once all is revealed the friends have a choice, stay with Donner as he slips into insanity or try and make their way back.

As with any View Askew film the performers for the film are familiar faces for the most part. All will recognize leading man Jason Lee in the role of Donner. As always Lee gives the best performance of the film delivering with quick comedy wit, while at the same time showing more of a dramatic turn when he starts to go crazy. I think that it is an interesting fact that this was the role that Kevin Smith saw Lee in and decided he would cast Lee in "Chasing Amy". Another familiar face turns up in Lee's ex wife Carmen, who delivers well as Cassady. Jason Mewes of "Jay" fame turns up as Az, Jason as usual is the biggest comic relief of the film. Renee Humphrey is also in this film, as well as a fresh face in the View Askew world Martin Brooks. Brooks surprised me as he turned in an excellent performance; I wish he would make more films. Also a great moment in the film occurs when Kevin Smith cameos as "Silent Bob" in the film and accidentally runs into Jason Mewes's character Az. After a brief quite second between the two as they look at each other, they move on as if it never happened. But the most brilliant thing about this film has to be Scott Mosier joining some other guys in the middle of the woods in nothing but a diaper. That has to be the greatest part of the movie, except maybe Lee's scenes where he admits what the trip is all about and gets in a fight with Cassady.

For a film that had an extremely low budget of 40,000 [if I' am not mistaken], this film even in black and white looks great. Brian Pearson did a pretty good job of making this film look as good as possible. And writer, producer, editor, directors Matt Gissing and Malcom Ingram did an excellent job with this film. The script had to have been great because this film turned out brilliant, if the Sci-Fi channel ever tried to make a film that would make Kevin Smith proud this would be it. Speaking of which, I' am so glad that Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier decided to back this film because it was definitely worth it in my eyes.

I would recommend this film to any and everybody out there who has a taste for films that are a little bit out there. Also be sure to check out the two commentaries on the film, the first by the Directors [that one is for all the technical behind the scenes stuff]. And the second featuring the directors, Smith, Mosier, Mewes, Lee, and others, that one of course is the livelier of the two.

1 out of 5 stars A man of worth never gets up to unsay what he said yesterday..........2005-12-02

Now, I am typically not one to generally insult a film. I realize that when creating artwork there are those that devote their sweat, tears, and blood to the project. While some films are horrendous, there is always the need to take a moment and appreciate the time that the director put into his/her work. Alas, with Drawing Flies that theory doesn't apply. What has happened with this film is simply two directors wanted to have a good time, sold Kevin Smith on the concept (a darn good sales pitch if you ask me), asked him to invite his friends, and they would provide the room and food. It reminded me of those first parties at college where you don't really know anyone, but you still invite upperclassmen so that it won't be a total bust. That is exactly what happened with Drawing Flies. While the directors (yep, sadly there were two) will complain about their lack of budget and film, I believe they got exactly what they wanted. A cheap independent film that can be endorsed by Kevin Smith and stars the now popular Jason Lee. Good or horribly bad, those are some decent names to boast for such a cheap film.

Drawing Flies was a cheaply made film that carried with it a sloppy story. In all attempts to pull in a independent crowd and possibly create a "cult" classic, these directors have done nothing more than provided us with an hour and ten minutes of pure slop. The beginning should have been our tell-tale sign when Jason Lee's voiceover provided the first ten minutes of the film laying what could have been the groundwork for the film, but instead just random dribble. There was no A-B-C logic in this film. There was no defined story. There were no intelligent characters. There was literally no emotion. I could continue this "missing" list for quite some time, but I would need several milk containers. All this film had was Kevin Smith's View Askew production name stamped (very proudly ... nearly too proudly) on the front and actor friends that apparently didn't care what a decision like this would do to their career. The entire "Jay & Silent Bob" moments were only included in this film to pull drooling fan-boys to the rental stands. They had no impact on the actual story itself. In fact, the mere seconds that they share aren't even funny, just cliché and completely cheap.

I hate to continue to use the word "cheap" to describe this film, but as I watched the production value of Drawing Flies fall dramatically as the 76 minutes came closer and closer to ending, I kept thinking of those $1 movies found in those bins at your local stores. They may be good movies, but the value is so cheap that you nearly feel like the $1 isn't worth it. That is how I felt with Drawing Flies. One minute we are at a beer guzzling party, the next we are moping about welfare, and the next we are in the woods concerned about Bigfoot. Where was the logic behind these segments? My answer ... there was none. This film was a cheap attempt at creativity, mental instability, and those darn Sasquatch. For a View Askew production, the voice dubbing was horrendous, the actual acting was atrocious, and the sets were amazingly poor. Even the outdoor shots just screamed "Blue Light Special". Nothing worked in this film. Nothing of value was created. Nothing could make a mother say, "I am proud of the work my son has done." That is sad.

I am tired of Kevin Smith. While I love Clerks (both the live-action and cartoon) and think Chasing Amy is one of the most brilliant films about modern culture created, Smith has continued to disappoint his die-hard fans time and time again by feeding us cheap cliché moments like that of Jay & Silent Bob in Drawing Flies. It is as if he has found his one character and is not afraid to exploit it to the very end. Jason Mewes should not continue to work. Jason Lee needs to stay focused. He is an exceptionally talented actor, but this film could seriously ruin his resume. Everyone else just did this film because Smith was involved, and Smith was involved only because he likes to think that he still has his hand on the pulse of independent cinema, but alas he does not. Kevin Smith is mainstream, even when Passion of the Clerks is released it just won't have that pizzazz it once did. His originality is gone and we can only blame films like Drawing Flies for that change.

Overall, in case you haven't guessed already, this was one of the worst films that I watched this year. As the year begins to close, I thought that good cinema would be pouring in, but if I continue on the Drawing Flies path, I do not see good things in my future. I am tired of clichés, of overused pop culture references, and of Kevin Smith. I am disappointed in this film because it wasted 76 minutes of my day.

I just kept waiting for these lines to pass our character's lips:

"I gave you BACK the map, Heather."
"I gave you the map."
"I gave you BACK... THE MAP."

5 out of 5 stars I Loved this movie!.......2004-11-19

I know it's a little odd but I think this may be a little better than CLERKS. Drawing has some great yet bizarro humor (Bizarro from selab). The movie also has a directors cut and theatrical version so that way you can see both great features. Just in case you wanna know, the movie is about a guy who is on the verge of having a nervous break down (or losing his, I can't tell which) and then he decides to look for bigfoot, so he lies to his friends and says that there is a cabin where his Grandfather lives but it is in the middle of the wood. The movie is jam packed with laughs. If you life Kevin you love this movie. If you like bizarre humor, you'll love this movie.
By the way, Jason Mewes is in this movie you know Jay from Clerks.

3 out of 5 stars More Askew than the normal View.......2003-07-03

This movie has a great cast, you'll recognize SEVERAL View Askew regulars. The dialogue is interesting, the special features are informative, and the plot is just completely BIZARRE. I have watched it twice, so that has to say something...worth the buy for View Askew fans and supporters.

5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2003-04-02

... I actually like it. I'm bordering on loving it, its only a matter of time and viewings. Maybe I'm just too big of a Jason Lee fan to not love this movie. In the first few minutes of was inclined to agree with my View Askew bretheren that it wasn't the greatest film ever made, but then Carmen started climbing over the welfare desk and I said "I've gotta watch this a little more". I'm glad I stuck around, very glad indeed. The second Jason started dancing with the Sasqautch, I said "this is one of the greatest movies ever!!" I don't know what it is, but that moment is hilarious. I nearly fell out of my chair. I'm serious. So, in short I finished watching it and I have come to like it more and more each time I have seen it. It has a certain inescapable charm. I don't care what anyone else says. If you like View Askew and you like Jason, you should, I repeat should, like this movie. I can't garauntee it. Rent it if you are in doubt. Its worth at least that.
