Editorial Review:

Smarter than Armageddon and equally extreme, The Core is high-tech Hollywood hokum at its finest. It's scientifically ridiculous, but this variant of Fantastic Voyage at least tries to be credible as it plunges deep into the earth's inner core, where a formulaic team of experts pilot an earth-boring ship to jump-start the planet's spinning molten interior, now stalled by a military secret that could seal the fate of all humankind. It's a geophysicist's wet dream that only a fine ensemble cast could rescue from absurdity, and director Jon Amiel (Entrapment, Copycat) draws excellent work (and plenty of humorous interplay) from Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo, and a host of memorable supporting players, especially The New Guy's D.J. Qualls as the world's greatest cyber-nerd. With enough digital F/X disasters to satisfy anyone's apocalyptic fantasies, this is a popcorn thriller with all the bells and whistles that its genre demands. Sit back, pump up the volume, and enjoy the dazzling ride. --Jeff Shannon

It's hard to say how Shiva Rea would react to being called "the Madonna of yoga," a phrase that appears on the cover of Creative Core Abs. But one thing is certain: the popular, California-based yogi's several DVD programs are uniformly first-rate, and this one is no exception. Roughly defined as the area between the upper thighs and lower ribcage, with particular focus on the abdominals and lower back, the core is "more than our physical center," says Rea; it is "our inner fire," the seat of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual selves (not to mention the center of a great many yoga poses). Mindful that core exercises are for many of us "a duty, not a pleasure," Rea has designed three different programs (ranging from seven to seventeen minutes) that aim to offer a more creative, innovative approach to the work. The "Water Core" segment includes various seated movements, many involving the arms as well; there are also sequences done on the back, somewhat akin to the bridge pose, as well as the "water wheel," which combines lifting the hips while alternately extending the legs. The "Spontaneous Core" section incorporates some of the previous movements with several new ones, while the "Fire Core," the longest of the three, blends very challenging poses such as chaturanga and the forearm plank with familiar standing asanas like the Warrior II. As usual, the musical accompaniment is effective but not intrusive, while the setting (New Mexico's White Sands National Park) and the HD cinematography by Sion Michel (a camera operator for Memoirs of a Geisha) are stunning. None of that may matter much while you're flat on your back, struggling to understand what it means to treat a pose as if you're "skateboarding on the empty bowl of your pelvis," but Creative Core Abs is likely to yield satisfying results for those who stick with it. --Sam Graham

Description

"The Madonna of yoga, exuding creativity and inspiration" —Yogi Times

Good things flow from a strong core: a long lean torso, a healthy back, a positive flow of energy that benefits every aspect of your life. Now, one of the yoga world's top female teachers shows you an enlightened way to a powerful core. Unlike repetitive conventional abs work, Shiva's fluid yoga-based approach awakens your creativity and inner fire, building strength and grace in the same way that surfing, rock climbing, or dancing does—while you're enjoying yourself, not counting the minutes until it's over. The program includes three flowing segments, which can be done all at once or individually.

Filmed at White Sands National Park, the program was directed by James Wvinner and shot in HD by Hollywood's Sion Michel (Memoirs of a Geisha). Beautiful, effective, inspiring. It's an abs workout you'll look forward to doing again and again.

I ordered this product a month ago and it has still not arrived.
written several times to amazon with no response and now asked to review it

4 out of 5 stars Shiva's amazing.......2007-04-14

If you already have Shiva's YOGA SHAKTI, you don't need any other DVD's. If you just like Shiva, get them all - and tolerate repeats. This is a DVD geared for less time while focusing on one area of the body. It's great stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Creative Core Abs isn't for the Beginner.......2007-04-02

I just purchased this DVD from Amazon in March 07. Previous reviewers are right in that the scenery is beautiful as is the background music.

I am just beginning to learn Yoga and I felt that this video is for someone who has been practicing Yoga for sometime and knows all the names of the poses even with Shiva's "freestyle" form. It was freestyle in the sense that she didn't have a set amount of repetitions, but just kept moving until her well-toned body felt it was time to stop.

I do better with very basic instructions that assumes that I have no previous experience with Yoga and takes me from a zero knowledge base to feeling somewhat knowledgeable by the end of the video. This video didn't do that for me, but made me feel even more inadequate after viewing and trying to emulate the well-toned, ever fluid Shiva.

I suggest Leslie Sansone's work-out videos (Her pilates is great) for she takes you from knowing nothing to feeling somewhat competent when the video is over. Her step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and I felt that I got a good work-out the first time to the 100th time!

Creative Core Abs would be a challenging, but exhilarting work-out for the advance Yoga student or teacher. It is also refreshing seeing an older woman (Shiva has to be past 45) looking fit and buffed as any 20 year old!

5 out of 5 stars Bikini season, here I come!.......2007-03-27

This was my introduction to Shiva Rea, as well as yogic core exercises, and I'm wild about both! As a dedicated beginner yogina (occasional practice for 2 years, daily home practice for 3 mo.), this DVD is my favorite way to end the active part of my morning yoga session. I really do feel like I'm unleashing creative energy (as goofy as that may sound), and I've definitely both built muscles and gotten more svelte. Since becoming serious about my yoga practice, I've gone down a whole dress size (I'm 22 and I haven't been a size 6 since the 8th grade!), and I definitely think this DVD has helped. Most importantly, though, it's really fun. I think most people will find something to love about this DVD.

1 out of 5 stars no instructions at all.......2007-03-21

This was like watching someone do a belly dance on her back, but there is no instruction! Maybe I'm supposed to use the visuals as inspiration to writhe around on my own, since this DVD advices you to create your own 'dance'. I was disappointed, but maybe it works for others who like this free form style.

Walt Disney Pictures scored a surprise box-office hit with Invincible, and the movie deserved its good reviews as a fine example of how above-average writing, direction, and casting can turn formulaic material into something special. And make no mistake, this is a formulaic movie, with its real-life story embellished with Rocky-like enthusiasm, and lovingly crafted with the same quality of working-class humanism that made The Rookie a similarly popular Disney hit. This time, the inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher in Philadelphia (played by Mark Wahlberg in a nicely understated performance) who was 30 years old, out of work, abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976. Going with his gut instinct, new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) rewards Papale's diligent efforts with a place on the team, and Invincible combines gridiron guts, low-key romance (as Papale meets his future wife-to-be, played by Elizabeth Banks) and blue-collar friendship in an underdog story that moves, with casual charm and abundant appeal, toward a rousing feel-good finish. Making good use of digital visual effects to recreate Philly's now-demolished Veterans Stadium, director Erickson Core (also serving as his own cinematographer) tackles this heartwarming assignment with intelligence and flair, spinning gold from what could have been just another routine sports movie. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

4 out of 5 stars Great family fare.......2007-06-22

This is a wonderful film that the entire family can enjoy (without watching a cartoon). It has the further benefit of being based on a real person's life and experience. In some ways it is Dick Vermeil's story as well as Vince Papale's. Both are embarking on long-shot careers. The fact that we know how Vermeil's will turn out provides reassurance that Vince's will turn out well also. A sweet and engaging film about individual aspiration, family, neighborhood, and friendship. Watch it with your kids without any fear of embarrassment. How often can you say that today?

5 out of 5 stars a real good movie.......2007-05-14

this is very serious and true movie. i really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2007-04-11

This movie will really touch your heart. The scenery, the acting, and the music are all on point. What a great story!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the usual sports saga.......2007-04-02

"Invincible" is a cut above the usual "downtrodden young man achieves the impossible" sports saga. It's the true story of a Philadelphia Eagles fan who responds to the coach's publicity stunt of holding tryouts for his beleagured team. No one expects anything to come of it, but Vince proves to be incredibly fast on his feet, and makes the first cut--and the second, and the third, and eventually the team. He's ostracized by regular team members, and even by some of his buddies back in the neighborhood, who fear they'll lose him to the big time. In his first big play, he blows it--but then makes an incredible play in a later game that wins it for the Eagles. My husband says Vince played for 3 years on Philadelphia's special teams.
This movie paints a real life gritty picture of working class Philadelphia, almost like the first Rocky film. Very suitable for kids without being sappy sweet--my 8 year old grandson thought it was great. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A feel good movie.......2007-03-31

This movie was well done, it builds the problem (a depressed era) and a lack of confidence and shows how one man handles that struggle with the help of his friends and family. A must watch and one that I would recommend purchasing. Then do a look up on Wikpedia to learn more about the man.

5 out of 5 stars Tough workout!.......2007-06-13

I really like this DVD. I work out regularly and this had me sweating big time! And I am quite sore! As you get more advanced, add weights. They're great, basic (and beyond) exercises.

I like that you go through the sections so you have a chance to breathe in between as it sits at the main menu waiting for the next selection. Get some water, catch your breath and move on without having to pause, rewind, etc. You just click on the next section when you're ready to go.

Wasn't sure what to think of something with "8 minutes" as the description, didn't seem like you can get benefit out of that, but when you put the 5 sections together you get a good, 40 minute workout. And you'll feel it in every part worked! What's tough is the "buns" section really works your legs too and then when you get to the "thighs" section, you're working them again. So they really get a good workout!

And the price is great! Overall happy with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Ok Beginners work out.......2007-04-06

if you work out regularly, unlikely you will feel a challenge.

I recommend the 10 minute solution series (pilates or target toning) for time constrained individuals (I know I am)

an okay purchase, but likely to end up in a friend's house.

4 out of 5 stars Great Core workout!.......2007-06-27

Ok guys, for those of you who don't know Denise Austin I'll give you a heads up. She is incredibly perky and can get annoying, but she really knows what she's doing!
I pretty well have every Denise Austin video out there and snatched this one up as soon as it came out. I was not disappointed, it's a great overall workout. My only complaint (and it's a small one!) is that I like having toned arms and this video doesn't focus on the arms as much as I would like. Overall, it's a fabulous core workout and it's a bit more challenging than the "Shrink your Female Fat Zones" video it's often compared to.

2 out of 5 stars Denise.......2007-06-20

This was my first Denise Austin workout video and I was annoyed with her within the first 10- seconds of the workout. I couldn't stand her voice or facial expressions, she was like a robot. Also, I did all the sections of the dvd and I found it to be ineffective as far as toning goes. I never really felt anything. I don't think I'll be using this tape again or buying another Denise Austin tape. It might be good for beginners, though. I would only recommend this to those who already own other Denise Austin tapes and aren't turned off by her excesssive encouragement or voice.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging core workout.......2007-06-12

I love this DVD, it is divided into four parts that you can customize acconding to your schedule and fitness level. I really like this DVD becuse it works every part of your body and becuse you are using the satability ball you strenght even more your core. Also, when I'm doing reps for the abs it makes me stop because they are really challlenging, it will take me a while to follow the reps, but I will stick to it, until I get better. I'm give Denise a 5 starts I love it!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good workout without dripping sweat.......2007-05-31

This video is good addition to my collection. Denise is a little more subdued in this video (not crazy and wild-eyed like she is in the boot camp video). As always, she delivers an inense workout that not only works your core, but also other parts of your body. Even though you are working hard you are not out of breath and drenched.

5 out of 5 stars Very good video.......2007-05-27

I work in a field where I have access to personal trainers and physical therapists. I had two of them watch this video and they said it was very well done. There were a few exercises (2) that seemed out of place to them, but other that they liked it. I've worked out to the video a few times and I've enjoyed it. You will get a good work out if you use proper technique.

The amiable sci-fi spoof The Ice Pirates has earned a small but vocal cadre of admirers thanks to its go-for-broke gags and a healthy disrespect for outer space epics like the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. An atypically goofy Robert Urich stars as the leader of a band of space pirates who kidnap a princess (Mary Crosby of Dallas fame), and then join her quest to find a mythical planet that can solve the universe's water shortage. A completely game (shameless?) cast (which includes Anjelica Huston in fetching leather gear, Ron Perlman, John Matuszak, and fantastic film icon John Carradine) and Stewart (The Philadelphia Experiment) and Raffill's breezy direction help sell the funniest bits (most notably, the notorious "space herpy" scene, and the frantic time-warp finale) and make the more leaden jokes palatable. --Paul Gaita

Description

Spoofy-goofy comedy, otherworldly special effects, spectacular space creatures, bedraggled 'bots, and biceps-ripplnig swashbuckling highlight this cult fave. In the future, as the galaxy's water supply starts to run out, a band of pirates searches for a new water source.

It's a silly SciFi movie which can be fun to watch about once a year or so.

5 out of 5 stars 80's ya!.......2007-06-10

I think you have to have an appreciation for slapstick and 80's movies. They wouldn't be able to make this movie today[like most 80's movies]since it's weird, irreverant and pre-steroid using Pearlman.

I laugh every goddamn time the space herpie is seen scooting around in the background.

3 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-15

I remember this one being so very funny back in the day when it first came out. I watched it the other day and sat there laughing at how far funny movies have come since this movie was made. While it does have its parts, I would not organize a movie night around it.

3 out of 5 stars Cheesy but entertaining.......2007-05-14

This was cheesy movie making at its finest. But it is worth watching. Some funny moments and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE ICE PIRATES.......2007-05-14

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it is sooooooooo corny, but yet so AWESOME at the same time. There are so many 80's movies that are so B rated it isn't even funny, but then again those are the ones I LOVE to watch over and over again. Everyone everywhere has an 80's movie that they love, and there is no reason to be ashamed of that. In fact I will come out and say that I actually love 'Howard the Duck'! See, I said that out loud and I am not afraid. Ice Pirates is actually not too bad to watch. It really is a lot of fun to watch and it has a great cast, too!! Well, again, I LOVE ICE PIRATES!!!!!

Product Description

In Brian Helgeland's new director's cut of the film, Mel Gibson portrays Porter, a career criminal bent on revenge after his partners in a street heist pump metal into him and take off with his $70,000 cut. Bad move, thugs. Because if you plan to double-cross Porter, you'd better make sure he's dead. Porter resurfaces, wading into a lurid urban underworld of syndicate kingpins, cops on the take, sniveling informants and deadly gangs. Porter wants his money back. And the way he sets out to get is assures that, from beginning to heart pounding end, Payback pays off big.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Hmm...you won't like this cut if you liked the "smart-a**" Porter........2007-06-13

My brother and I love the theatrical cut because of the dark humor throughout the film. To the director's cut credit, we always thought the kidnapping part of the rich son was stupid. So we watched this D.C. last night and we were both disappointed. My problem w/ the d.c. is that eliminates a lot of the dark humor. The new score is a more serious one which doesn't mix well with the exsiting parts that were funny or the subtle things all the actors did to give it a "smart-a**" feel. The new voice over for Kris Kristoffersen's character, Bronson, is done by a woman. The new scene with William Devane (Jack Bauer's nemesis) & Porter on the phone with Bronson, doesn't work for me. She sounds like grandma acting ticked off rather than a "head boss". It gets dumber when she's on speakerphone w/ James Coburn. She's says Porter has hit the "end of the road" and will go nowhere in one breath. Then Porter shoots the alligator bags, while Bronson thinks it was Fairfax, and then she just gives in and says Ok, you win pretty much. Again, another "smart-a**" Porter part they cut was the toe torture scene.

The ending is totally different. I didn't mind the newer one but it was the "everyday" shootout. I miss the old phone trick and him blowing the car up with ciggy. I don't see how the theatrical cut was any happier but for us it was funnier & a little less melodramatic.

On the HD-DVD side of things: this disc shares the same problem as my Sleepy Hollow HD-DVD. Horrible digital noise. It's like watching the creepy crawlies all over people's faces and the blurred out backgrounds (on a 56" RPTV). Other than the digital noise the transfer is sharp and the blue tint is gone which I am indifferent on. Again, the newer score is not as fun as the old one and DD+ is fine.

In the end- we missed the darker humor more in this newer cut but it is still worth seeing to see how different it is. Director's cuts are fun to watch even if do or do not like them.

1 out of 5 stars Point Blank Rip-off.......2007-06-13

This movie started out with brutalizing women, and continued from one scene of empty violence to the next. Gun shot to gun shot, it left me cold, and I finally went in the next room and let if finish for the benefit of guests who were watching. After the final shots and body count ended, I shut-down my home projection cinema, said goodnight to my friends, and folded the HD disc four-ways and put it in the trash where it belonged. Forget this worthless cXXp.

4 out of 5 stars Alternate version worth taking a look at!.......2007-05-18

If you're a fan of Payback at all, I think it's imperative that you watch this version not only because of how differently it plays out but because it is a great opportunity to see how a director's vision can be compromised by the studio system.

From the very beginning, you know you're in different waters when the tone of the film settles in. They do away with the voice over and there is far less humor in this version. Instead of the blue tinted palatte of the original, this film has a more lush and natural quality to it. The character of Porter (Mel Gibson) in this version is even more brutal and cold blooded, which is a big reason as to why the film was asked to be recut by the studio. I watched both versions back to back and I think I can say that this new version is almost like watching an entirely different movie. I like them both equally and this new version really adds to the experience.

That being said, this HD-DVD has several great supplementary features that should make your day. One in particular is a half hour doc that goes into why Brian Helgeland's original cut was rejected by the studio and contains insightful comments by key members of the cast and crew, including Mel Gibson himself who I have to give credit to for being involved with restoring this version and giving a genuinely humbling interview. The picture on this disc looks great and the sound really kicks in during scenes of gunfire and general action. I strongly recommend it, especially if you like the original cut!

3 out of 5 stars THIS DIRECTOR SHOULD GET "CUT", THAT'S MY PAYBACK FOR THIS ONE!.......2007-05-11

I GET IT. BECAUSE NOT TO MANY PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD THE FIRST ONE, THEY DECIDED TO RE-EDIT FROM THE "DIRECTORS" POINT OF VIEW. HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT HIS VIEWS TO HIMSELF. THE ORIGINAL ONE, THE FIRST RELEASE IS FAR BETTER. THIS ONE JUST DOESN'T HAVE THE PUNCH OR THE KICK THAT THE FIRST ONE HAS. MAYBE THE DIRECTOR SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED SOME SCENES FROM THE , DIRECTOR'S CUT, AND ADDED IT TO THE FIRST RELEASE THEN IT REALLY WOULD'VE BEEN A MAJOR "PAYBACK". I SAY, RENT IT FIRST BEFORE PURCHASING FOR YOUR COLLECTION. YOU DECIDE WHAT'S WHAT IN THIS CHANGE OF DIRECTION!

4 out of 5 stars Seventy grand, I want it back.......2007-05-02

Before studio execs and Mel Gibson got all uppity with Brian Helgeland, Payback was a darker, meaner film. But after an apparently poor test screening in 1997(honestly, what IS the point of these?) they put Payback on hold for over a year so Mel could do Lethal Weapon 4 before going back for some re-shoots, with a new director, to make the film happier.

So they approved a script of a dark, moody revenge thriller, green-lighted it for production and changed their minds to make it lighter because a ragtag audience didn't understand/like it? Man, Hollywood is one weird town.

The resulting film, which was eventually released in 1999, seemed a bit tacked together. There were scenes that just seemed out of place and irregular. It was obvious that any scene actually shot back in 1997 was shot on location and any scene shot for the 1999 cut was just shot in the generic 'street set' on the Warner back-lot. Despite all of this, Payback was still a fun film that failed to go all the way with it's concept.

The new DC is a superior version, no doubt and is about 33% different. There are new scenes and odds and ends through out the running time and the last act is completely different. Kris Kristoffersen is gone and replaced by Sally Kellerman (voice only, Bronson is never seen). James Coburn and John Glover also have smaller roles. The narration from Porter is gone as well as the blue tint to most of the film. Now most scenes are just lit as normal without any post-production filtering.

There is also a new musical score. The jazzy feel to the opening scenes is still there but through-out the rest of the film the score is more atmospheric and understated. Both are as good as each and fit the differing tones, so there's no better of the two.

It does end a bit abruptly and without any truly satisfying conclusion. I guess this is what annoyed test audiences. But a disgruntled audience should not be a decision-making committee when it comes to making movies.

The HD DVD is in glorious 2.4:1 1080p with Dolby Digital+ sound and loads of extras.

4 out of 5 stars Yoga Booty Ballet.......2007-06-11

I really like the workout. The two women in the DVD have a really good workout and explain everything very well, and I feel the results as I'm working out with this DVD. The personalities of the two women just seem a little strange, but it's not really fair to judge people in a workout video. Besides the personalities, I love the DVD and the workout! It was well worth the money!!!

5 out of 5 stars Loved It! .......2007-05-08

I do tradional Hatha and Kundalini Yoga and this was really nice for a change. It wasn't boring at all and the exercises really do work! If you think that this workout is too easy, then you really aren't doing it properly. For a longer set I recommend doing both DVD's. Well worth the money. I love this workout for when I don't feel like spending over an hour doing tradional Yoga and want results.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST!.......2007-07-05

If you're looking to get the striations and definition to your muscles, then this is the DVD for you. The exercises are compound which work several muscle groups at once. The queing is excellent, the instruction precise and there are variations of each available. This is definately a killer workout for beginners. I used only 5# dumbells my first time and I had to take two days to recover before doing it again! This DVD will be in my library for a long time!

5 out of 5 stars Favorite.......2007-07-04

I like this dvd workout 2nd best to her first one. I enjoy using weights more than doing cardio, and she started doing too much cardio for my taste after this dvd!! Her others are good - but I just do not enjoy hopping around.

4 out of 5 stars Very good full-body weighted workout using compound moves.......2007-06-14

I'm an intermediate-to-advanced exerciser who recently discovered Jari Love's workouts. Her first workout, Get Ripped, became an immediate favorite, as it's a perfect match for my level, Ripped to the Core is the second of Jari's workouts that I have tried.

As with all of the Ripped workouts, there is no traditional warm-up; rather, Jari starts right in with the weight moves. I find that it takes me a bit of trial and error to figure out the right weights to use in Jari's workouts. Here, because the compound moves required more exertion, I found that I needed to go lighter than I did in Get Ripped, never using heavier than 8# dumbbells and often reaching for my 5# and even 3# ones (oddly enough, Jari states that you can actually go HEAVIER for compound moves because you are recruiting more muscles, but I did NOT find this to be the case for me). The great thing about all of the Ripped workouts is that Jari and her three background exercisers vary not only in the equipment they use--eg, Jari generally uses dumbbells here, with one background exerciser always using the barbell and others sometimes using just weight plates--but also in their individual weight loads, which are very helpfully shown on screen at the start of every new exercise.

As with Get Ripped, Jari varies the count of each exercise, using different temps such as 4-4, 3-1, 2-2, etc. But Ripped to the Core also adds compound moves: either you'll do a superset with an upper/lower body combination or you'll move both areas at the same time. Similar to Get Ripped, you will do a high number of repetitions for each body part, and you may need to go lower on your weights as mentioned above. The workout begins with a side squat/reverse lunge combo. Then it is down to the floor for a really tough move, the spider--this is a planking exercise where you go from a full plank, down to your elbows, then back up again, and it is super challenging! Jari makes it all the more difficult by doing push-ups inbetween spider sets (the male background exerciser continues the push-ups even during the stretch breaks--ouch!). I am always VERY glad when this section is over. You stay on the floor for a chest press combined with a pelvic raise (Jari and crew lie on their steps), then it's back to standing for a deadlift/bicep curl combo. Next comes a wide squat with an upright row, although there is a modification shown if you have shoulder issues. Sticking with the tough work for legs/shoulders, you'll do a side squat off the step (can be modified on the floor) adding a delt raise and also a knee lift. Following this, there is a VERY brief narrow squat set with front raises, again adding knee lifts (I believe only 8 total reps here). The next series is MUCH more challenging than it looks. You start with a simple slow step climb, then add a shoulder press and do LOTS of reps. When I did this with my 5# dumbbells, I was dying by the end, so now I'm sticking with the 3#. Then it's back down to the floor on all fours for tricep kickbacks, adding a leg raise and then the leg in and out to work the core more. Abs work follows, and I really didn't like the how this section starts off. First of all, Jari uses the male background exerciser to display the most advanced modification, even though a message on screen says that most people should NOT attempt this exercise! Although the other two background exercisers show easier versions, the camera never focuses on them, so this segment is very hard to follow. Two exercises are performed, a plank with side leg lift and a superman, and I just sort of do my own thing for both of these. Then Jari moves on to more traditional abs work, which I liked much better, although it was pretty brief: she does a set moving each leg in and out and then a few sets of pulsing crunches. The workout, which comes right in at an hour, ends with a cool-down, first on the floor to stretch the hamstrings/hips and then moving to seated for upper body, finishing with some neck stretches.

Extras on this DVD include exercise demonstrations, interviews, and bloopers. I wasn't crazy about the music--it generally had a pumping, techno-type beat (with occasional vocals) similar to what you would hear in a club--but I found it to be less glaring/more tolerable than in the original Get Ripped. Jari herself comes across as a bit cool and reserved, and although some people might not click with her, I actually liked her no-nonsense style as well as her excellent form pointers and good cueing. She does try to be encouraging, frequently saying "fantastic!" (a change from "awesome!" in the original). I would say that this workout is most suited for high intermediate-to-advanced exercisers. It is probably doable for advanced beginners/low intermediates using VERY light weights, but I definitely would not recommend it for complete beginners, as I think that some of the exercises (such as the spider move) would be way too difficult, even in a modified form. Personally, I found the compound moves in this workout (ie, moving the upper body and the lower body at the same time) to be fairly strenuous, making this workout more tiring for me than the original Get Ripped. In addition, some of the individual exercises are quite tough, which gives this workout a slight dread factor for me, at least in the very beginning during the tough spider series. Overall, however, I liked that this workout provided me with a challenge, and I would definitely recommend it for experienced exercisers, especially those who enjoy compound moves.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and Fun to do........2007-05-25

I borrowed this DVD in the library deciding mainly on the title on the cover. I have am not familiar with Jari Love's DVDs. When I did the exercises, i just loved it. It is not boring. It strenghtens without bulking and you feel that it is working without getting the exhausted feeling. I have ordered one for my self.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2007-05-08

Very tough but an excellent workout. Get Ripped Slim & Lean is my favorite though.

5 out of 5 stars Great Yoga Practice.......2007-05-13

This is a wonderful DVD. I had been hesistant to use DVDs for my yoga practice, as I have always preferred to do my practice with a group of people. But Baron Baptiste's DVDs have provided me with the perfect alternative since I don't have a lot of yoga options in the town that I currently live. I use this DVD and Unlocking Athletic Power, both of which were filmed live, and provide a great visual for modifying postures. Baron's descriptions of the postures, and soothing voice make for a great practice. After only 3 weeks I feel stronger, and with less joint and muscle pain that I was feeling before. These practices are only a 1/2 hour long, so I'm able to start my day with the practice without having to get up an hour or two early. Its a great way to clear one's head and make for a fresh start for the day. I highly recommend these DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Core Workout.......2007-05-13

I really like Baron Baptiste! He was one of the first to do Power Yoga and he has made it accesible to everyone.
He moves very fast during the salutations but it is not hard to get into the flow and it does warm up the body.
My regular pracitce is now Kundlaini Yoga, thanks to Ana & Ravi, but this is great to do once or twice a week to get my Power Yoga fix!

5 out of 5 stars Good short routine for inbetween ;-).......2007-01-05

A few words about myself so you can judge easier if my opinion might be helpfull for you: I'm into Power Yoga since about 6 Years, I practice every day and teach Power Vinyasa Yoga at a local Hotel Spa Fitness Club.
I personally prefer physically demanding Flow Routines challenging strength but still contributing to all the aspects of Yoga.
Beeing german my spelling is far from perfect, sorry for that!
About the DVD:
This is one more of Barons good short programms for the days inbetween when you can't practice 60 to 80 Minutes. It is 30 Minutes long and has a focus on the muscels of the Stomach and Back. It is still a complete Programm featuring Sunsalutations ( only A) and some twists and streches. The programm leaves you warm and energized but is not to hard to do. It will challange the Abs and the back but wont leave you exhausted.
It's a good programm for the morning. I highly recommend all of Barons short Routines since every one is somewhat different, aswell as his longer Programms. Baron is a very skilled, gentil and encouraging teacher giving his students a lot of important information in a calm and soothing manner. The Music of Krishna Das was a great pick for the Background.
A nice flow practice (ones again tis is true for all his programms) with beautifull Yoga Chant music. What else can a Yogi ask for?
I hope this was helpfull to you!
Namasté

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-07-30

I highly recommend this for beginners. A very good ab workout and it improves flexibility. Very easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Similar to other DVD's, great for quick yoga.......2006-02-22

My husband and I love all of Baron Baptiste's yoga videos. I have taken several ashtanga yoga courses and I am very picky about my workout. Baron uses yoga terminology and is very good at explaining the movements and modifications. I highly recommend any of his DVD's. Core Power is very similar to some of his other DVD's but it is a condensed version. My husband likes it when he is short on time.

5 out of 5 stars The better version.......2007-07-04

A good film, made even better. The transfer to Blu-ray is very well done and the extras are interesting. The disc is region free and works great on my European PS3.

2 out of 5 stars Great Picture but...........2007-07-04

The picture quality was great but I didn't like Devane's version, I enjoyed the original better

4 out of 5 stars Good, but original release better........2007-05-13

This version was a good twist from the original. When you see the movie and realize why they changed it in the first place you wonder why? Especially with all the content they feature in movies nowadays. I do feel the movie was originally changed for the better. Not because I felt the original content was bad or vulgar but just for the flow. I felt the original version and content made for a better climax. Again, not to say the directors cut was bad. I wish they included both versions of the movie so I could enjoy them both. It's almost like they are two different movies. Overall I think the movie is still good.

3 out of 5 stars Mehback.......2007-04-25

I just viewed this at a friends house and while the movie starts strong it ends weak. The real problem is a lack of strict motivation on the part of the "hero". As a viewer I didn't care if he got his money back (because it wasn't HIS to begin with) and he didn't care that his wife died after the first 40 minutes, so what we are left with are vanilla villians and not much icing. I thought the picture looked sharp at times but certain scenes contained excessive grain; the sound was often at odds with what the viewer was seeing; and in general the movie didn't seem to have a relevent conclusion.

This could have been a fun 3/5 rental but as it turned out it ended up being a purchase by a friend and a warning flag for me to choose my HD and Bluray selections cautiously.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely sharp bluray quality.......2007-04-11

This bluray boast a very sharp video quality. From start to finish I was very impressed at how good an old movie like this can look. Extremely enjoyed the extras which had interviews with all the cast. Pace of this director's cut was a lot slower than the original release as how the director intended. Along with it you lose Mel's character narration that was highly enjoyable on the previous release. Even for such an old flick, you can see all of Mel's wrinkles and see his age.
