In Paul Verhoeven's appropriately shallow Hollow Man, Kevin Bacon plays a bad-boy egotistical scientist who heads up a double-secret government team experimenting with turning life-forms invisible. How do we know he's a bad boy? Because he (a) wears a leather overcoat, (b) compares himself to God, (c) drives a sports car, and (d) spies on his comely next-door neighbor while eating Twinkies. Sadly, this is the most character development anyone gets in this undernourished action/sci-fi thriller, which boasts some amazing special effects and some amazingly ridiculous plot twists. After experimenting rather ruthlessly on a menagerie of lab animals, Bacon finally cracks the code that will turn the invisible gorillas, dogs, and so on, back into their visible forms. Does it work on humans? Faster than you can say "six degrees," Mr. Bacon appoints himself human guinea pig, strapping down for an injection of fluorescent-colored serum. Thanks to some phenomenal, seamless and Oscar-worthy computer effects, Bacon is indeed rendered invisible, organ by organ, vein by vein. And what's the first thing you'd do if you were invisible? Why, spy on your female coworkers in the bathroom and molest your comely next-door neighbor, of course! Soon, Bacon is thoroughly psychotic, and it's up to Elisabeth Shue (Bacon's coworker and ex-girlfriend) and hunky Josh Brolin (her current snuggle bunny) to defeat the invisible man, who's picking off the science team one by one. You'd think this would be a prime opportunity for copious amounts of cheesy sex and aggressive violence--which Verhoeven served up so well and so exuberantly in Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct--but if anything, the director seems to tone down the proceedings, and really, who wants a muted Paul Verhoeven movie? Shue (who got top billing and a bad haircut to boot) and Brolin (who, yes, does take off his shirt at least once) generate little heat, and while Bacon does give an effective, primarily voice-oriented performance, his character is so underdeveloped that, well, you can see right through him. --Mark Englehart

The plot is predictable and lackluster. The writing is medicore and the characters are generally unlikeable. Kevin Bacon's performance is good, which is the only reason to watch this film. If you want scary, you won't find it here. If you want a smart movie, you won't find it here. And if you want a good movie, you won't find it here. Kevin Bacon has been in a lot of movies; this is not one of his best.

"It's amazing what you can do, when you don't have to look at yourself in the mirror any more". Yeah, it's amazing alright and very scary too. This movie was pretty good. The plot is pretty simple, Kevin Bacon plays a scienctist named Sebastin Cane. Who is working on a formula for invisibility. When he does succeed, he decides to take things, to the next level. By trying the formula on himself. Everything seems to be fine at first. But, he can't reverse it. Then things go horrible wrong and Cane goes slowely in the mad. His other co-workers must race to find a way to cure him. Before, it's too late. It's a new twist on a old movie.

Violent Horror.......2006-08-24

Hollow Man is a very violent horror film. The story is about a genius researcher named Sebastian (Kevin Bacon) who is working on a top-secret project on invisibility for the Pentagon. A young, exceedingly large-egoed individual, Sebastian has his research team cowed and under his thumb. The team lets him bend - or break - the rules because they genuinely admire his genius and believe in his ability. This blind faith proves to be their undoing. Sebastian tests the invisibility serum on himself. He disappears, all right, but the problem lies in making himself visible again. Although the procedure worked on primates, it won't work on him.

The increased time of being invisible also plays on his mind and makes him paranoid and aggressive. Hollow Man has tons of gratuitous female nudity and sexual assaults, not to mention very disturbing animal abuse. A screaming rat is tortured and mangled, a gentle lab dog is smashed against a cage, a female gorilla is subjected to immense pain during an experiment.

Yes, the special effects are amazing - but although Hollow Man has an interesting premise and main character, the violence is shocking and horrific, and reveals an underlying core of something like masochism against women.

Good special effects, but disturbing!.......2006-08-20

I have to admit, the concept of not just an invisible man, but the observation of a man GOING invisible is original and creative. For this I score the two stars for this movie. Seeing skin evaporate to human organs to nothing is quite a sight which is done expertly by the special effects masters behind this movie.
However, I tend to agree with most viewers is that while Kevin Bacon (who even though is invisible for much of this movie, still brings across one of his best performances-he brings that wispy, whispering voice to top notch evil heights) does great and Elizabeth Shue, Josh Brolin, and the other actors give their all, Bacon's character is so one sided. Never before have I watched a movie where I was genuinely angry in wanting to see the bad guy get his in the end. When Elizabeth Shue finally gets him in the end and is telling him where to go, I was saying it right along with her!
And assaulting women, killing dogs, spiraling out of control into the final movie chapter which was reminiscent of gory splatter slasher flicks of the 80's, I'm deciding right now whether I can actually watch this movie again or whether I want to take it to the Good Will!
Apologies for the harsh review to the director of this movie-great idea, but disturbing and dark which almost surpasses the positive of the movie-great special effects.

A journey without return .......2006-05-01

This fascinating fiction entertainment deals about a curious experiment the overall search of the biogenetic sequence. Since a smart scientist has made certain experiments without concrete advances, the top authorities who command such project treat him with retire the financial budget in case not obtain more solid results.

The main twist concerns when he decides by himself, to make the journey. But the rest runs for you. A delirious exploration of the human nature faced with nature forces. A breathtaking movie that made us remind that famous film of Ken Russell : "Altered states". Bloody story with the accustomed violence and overwhelming special effects.

Perhaps the anecdote literally could not avoid a major and devastating reflection around the unthinkable facts that eventually might derivate from certain arrogant attitudes without taking into account the final goal.

But the film is above the average.

Hollow Man 2 ups the ante established by Paul Verhoeven's 2000 science fiction thriller by involving not one but two invisible men in this direct-to-home-video sequel. Christian Slater is top billed as a former Army assassin who volunteers to undergo the same invisibility experiments endured by Kevin Bacon in the original film. Like before, Slater is rendered transparent but also dangerously unstable, and detectives Peter Facinelli and Laura Regan are called in to stop his killing spree. Scripter Joel Soisson has had a hand in most of the recent horror/thriller franchise sequels (Hellraiser, Dracula, Mimic, and others), so he understands what's required to draw in genre fans (violence, special effects, nudity); what he's less capable at producing is an un-cliched script, which essentially strands Swiss director Claudio Fah and the cast (who are much better than the material). Undiscerning horror enthusiasts might check this out hoping for a quick thrill--and they'll find it here, but not much else. -- Paul Gaita

Well, Christian Slater Is an Invisible Man ... Not a Good Career Choice, I Believe .......2007-01-27

I didn't particularly find Paul Verhoeven-directed `Hollow Man' impressive and I actually thought its characters are stupid and the story was silly (tell me, who would like to be absolutely invisible without thinking about its risk?), but the plot of the sequel is even more preposterous, After the promising opening ten minutes, the film soon runs out of gas, depending on so-so set-pieces and countless plot conventions.

The story is, in short, about an invisible killing machine Griffin (played by Christian Slater who is not seen but heard almost all through the film). Griffin needs serum that would keep him alive, so he stalks the scientist who knows how to make it. There are stock characters like a determined PD detective, his partner and military officials. Peter Facinelli plays the cop Frank Turner, Laura Regan the scientist Maggie Dalton and William MacDonald the officer whose name, sorry, I don't remember.

The attack and chase scenes involving the invisible killer are passable at best with OK effects, but the film spends so much time to show Frank and Maggie running and driving around in the city without knowing what to do next. Usually directors like Michael Bay can keep entertaining us with his loud, showy and very enjoyable actions, but Claudio Fäh, as in his previous B-action film `Coronado,' takes too much time to get to the point. The stunts are decent, but the slack pace of the film damages it considerably.

But what kind of military officers and scientists would dream of creating invisible soldiers before inventing invisible weapons first? Are they supposed to fight with bare hands? In the original film CGI-enhanced actions and Kevin Bacon's over-the-top acting made us temporarily forget the silliness of the plot and numerous holes in it. It was guilty pleasure, but in the sequel, you even don't get that.

Okay, this wasn't too bad for a direct to video release. The story was pretty good. Basically, this is about a dective and a doctor who must team up to stop a rouge soldier. Who is bent on getting revenge for what happened to him. When he took part in a experiment, that left him invisble. Check it out, it's a great movie!!!!

Not Too Bad.......2006-07-19

The first Hollow Man was sort of an invisible man meets alien film with the title character going nuts in an underground installation. This one is more like the original Claude Raines movies. Two cops get drawn into a murder case and are immediately superceded by the military. But when one of them dies protecting someone related to the case, the lead detective, who tries so hard to be Tom Cruise, goes on a vengeance campaign to find out why his partner had to die.

There is an invisible man (unimaginatively named Griffin) who seems to be killing people. He needs a buffer that was designed by the woman being protected by the cop. A cat and mouse game follows with complications added by the military. Finally, desperate measures are called for and the film reaches its climax.

Christian Slater is the invisible man in this one but his part is quite small and his biggest scene is a flashback. The movie starts very quickly as a character is attacked at a formal function. Things continue to move quickly all the way to the end with only a few pauses to catch a breath. The only real problem I had was that there is no real reason to care about the characters. We know so little about them it is almost as if they are lab rats, just people to have things happen to. Still it is a pretty fun movie

Hollow Man 2 is an excellent movie. If you saw Hollow Man indeed you need to see how Christian Slater did a great job. The special effects are great!!!

In 2000 Kevin Bacon became the man who signed up to become a Hollow Man after the scientists made a monkey go invisible. After Bacon was invisible he began rampaging around killing off people one by one, terroizing Josh Brolin and Elisabeth Shue and eventually getting blown up in an elevator shaft. Now 6 years later they make another one...Hollow Man 2 and now in the spot as the invisible Assassian Hollow Man is none other then Christian Slater (Heathers, Pump Up The Volume) who is only in a couple of scenes but provides voices overs. Peter Facinelli (Can't Hardly Wait, Tempted) plays Det. Turner who after his partner is killed in an atempt to capture Hollow Slater runs around with Doc Laura Regan (Wes Craven Presents THEY) who so happened to be a part of the experiment involvoing Slater going invisible. How Hollow does this movie go? Well it has its moments and Peter Facinelli is basically the only one who keeps it alive. Slater looks cool in blue makeup but man...come on, going from crappy movies like The Deal, Manhunters to this?! I so hope he gets better movies. Regan's acting is bland and I'm not liking the short hair on her. The curly long hair in the scene where Slater goes Hollow was nice but short....no. So, all in all it wasnt that fantastic and I hope they dont make a Hollow Man 3. Well, if they do the only actor I have in mind for the role is Corey Feldman....just kidding....or am I?

SHORT ON PLOT AND CHARACTERIZATION BUT SPECTACULAR VISUAL EFFECTS..........2006-05-28

This is a reasonably entertaining movie with stunning visual effects. It is really a modern day version of a mad scientist movie.

The plot is a little thin. It basically revolves around Kevin Bacon's character, Dr. Sebastian Caine, an egotistical, self absorbed scientific genius who, during the course of his work for the Department of Defense, has managed to render animals to an invisible state and return them to visibility. He does not reveal to the Department of Defense, his financial benefactor, that his work has succeeded. Instead, he ignores protocols and decides that the time has come to take his experimentation to the next level and try it on a human being, himself.

To make a long story short, Caine goes ahead with the human experimentation, only to find that he is unable to replicate the success he had with the laboratory animals and render himself visible again, once rendered invisible. He begins to deteriorate mentally, sinking into an inexplicable and bizarre maniacal state until he is totally out of control.

Moreover, Caine, the acknowledged genius of a scientific assemblage, is aware that he is losing it. Yet, he does nothing to assist in the discovery of what went wrong with the experiment and what could be done to correct the problem. He, instead, inexplicably leaves the solution to the self-acknowledged lesser capabilities of his colleagues. This simply does not compute with the film's portrayal of Caine's inherent character.

There is virtually no explanation for Bacon's rapid descent into apparent madness, where his antics range from naughty and not nice to totally evil and depraved. This is a big hole in the story, and Bacon's character reflects this omission, as the viewer is not moved to feel any compassion for him. The character of Caine is, in essence, just a mechanism used to facilitate a lot of action scenes with great special effects.

Therein lies the rub. Caine, as a character, has no redeeming value or quality. In other words he is no Jekyll and Hyde. He is just Hyde. This is why, I believe the movie has been so panned by most viewers, even though they may not have articulated it as such.

With such great visual effects, I am also surprised that more attention was not paid to production details. A latex mask created for Caine does not appear to have breathing holes for the nostrils. The film also occasionally segues into the absurd. In one scene, the ease with which plastic bags of blood were ripped open with one character's bare hands defied reality. I have a harder time ripping open a plastic bag of carrots. In another scene, Caine's character is torched with a flame thrower over, and over, and over again. Yet, like the energizer bunny, he keeps on going. This was simply not believable. The film is fraught with a number of moments of implausibility.

If you are willing to suspend belief and just sit back and accept the movie at face value, however, one should stll be able to reasonably enjoy this movie, as it does, despite the plot holes, have its moments, and the visual effects are dazzling.
