The colorfully designed 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet (also available in a collector's box) comes in a slip-covered fold-out case accompanied by a pocket of 17 miniature lobby card reproductions (eight for Forbidden Planet, nine for the 1957 companion movie The Invisible Boy). On Disc 1, Forbidden Planet is presented with a new digital transfer from restored picture and audio elements, with soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, offering considerable improvement over the film's previous DVD release. A selection of deleted scenes were taken from a faded and scratchy 16-millimeter "work print" that had originally been viewed by composers Louis and Bebe Barron as they were creating the film's unique electronic score; they consist of full or partial scenes cut from the final film-- mostly for good reason, but collectors (and those who first saw this rare material on the original Criterion Collection laserdisc) will welcome their inclusion here. The "lost footage" is crude special-effects test footage, primarily of interest to sci-fi historians and aficionados. Given the fact that the original "Robby the Robot" cost over $100,000 to build in 1955, it's easy to see why MGM wanted to get their money's worth: An excerpt from the 1950s TV series "MGM Parade" shows Forbidden Planet star Walter Pigeon appearing briefly with Robby, and the popular robot gets even more attention as a guest star in "The Robot Client," an episode of the Thin Man TV series (starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk) that originally aired on Feb. 28, 1958. This is a true gem. It makes so little sense that it is beautiful. The plot and reasoning would give Spock a migraine. This movie starts with hansom Lesley Nielson or whatever, going to visit some old creepy guy "living" with his only daughter on some way out planet. Everything from why it was so long to send a ship to investigate the velerapon party's disappearance, to morpheous blowing up the planet didnt make sense... BUT WHO CARES! it has lesley nielson man, really. Laser blasters, cheap rubber robots, beautiful women and drunk cooks. Even contains a brilliant sub plot of the farmers daughter scheme. Lets just say his daughter is like a child in a candy shop when a ship of hunky men land on her porch. If you love top notch B movies that were bumped up a grade or two then this is the goodness here. This movie truly encompasses the rich, chewy, caramel flavor of being a great movie.

Enjoy the story, special effects and art work. remember this movie was made in 1956 way before most of us were even born. Anne Francis was one gorgeous woman! Buy this movie in HD it looks fantastic. Its a little spooky for kids under 12.

Forbidden Planet was the blueprint for Star Trek, Lost in Space, Star Wars, It was so influential that you may watch it, and see a whole new genre that popped up because of it. The movie is the first time the world saw the Robbie Robot character, the same robot give or take a few spare parts from Lost in Space. The crew of the space ship was a complete crew even down to a cook. Laser shooters were used in this movie as well, a Hollywood first. That being said it did have some flaws; the characters were all one dimensional. The story went no where at times. Such as the time where the cook got the robot to synthesize bourbon. Yes some of the plot just seemed like filler. I really got the feeling that Dr. Morbius was based on Captain Nemo from 20000 leagues Jules Verne story. The way how he gave the tour of his world and machinery just seemed so familiar to the 20000 leagues story. Overall this is a fine transfer to DVD, and has quite extras on this DVD package. If you love old science fiction campy films this is a must have.

Warner should be ashamed of itself for calling this an Ultimate edition.
They release this on one of the highest capacity media and yet guess what!
The original aspect ratio of the movie is lost!!! That means the movie is clipped on the sides. The original movie is 2.55:1, this so called Ultimate version is 2.4:1.
%5 of the original width is missing. And you call this an ultimate version, HAHA!

A Sci-fi Classic.......2007-05-22

The movie itself is a classic on so many levels...this particular package contains promotional items that the movie buff, at least, will find intriguing. The film itself is surprisingly non-dated considering that it was made in the very early 50's. And Leslie Nielson sometimes actuall acts.

For Fans of Campy Sci-Fi and Phillip K. Dick.......2007-03-29

Filmed in the Montreal area during that period of time in the 90s when it was economically advantageous to shoot movies in Quebec, Screamers is a loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "Second Variety". It is a throw-back to the days when campy sci-fi was still a marketable genre, it feels more late 80s than mid 90s. Peter Weller is seems to fit comfortably into this genre with just enough over-acting to not compromise his integrity.

Personally, I really loved the scenes that involved the screamers themselves: mechanical devices reminiscent of rats sporting razor sharp saw-blades in their heads. They are programmed to eliminate the "enemy" in this post apocalyptic setting, but, in the tradition of all great sci-fi, SOMETHING GOES TERRIBLY WRONG(spoken in classic, cinematic threateningly low voice). All to say that many will end up with severed limbs.

Definately a fun movie to watch, despite its lacking somewhat in the second act. It turns out that two of my wife's cousins were extras in the final act of the movie when dozens of "davids" come marching out of the compound. Makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable for me.

I loved this movie for it's sci-fi purity and simplicity. There's military, space, AI, mystery, suspense, nukes, drama, sexual tension, love... I'm planning to read more of the works from the writer that wrote the story the movie is based on. This is a classic sci-fi movie. Add it to your collection and get ready to watch it every 2 or 3 months.

Close to Phil Dicks vision, but not quite.......2007-02-04

I have collected books written by Philip K. Dick for as long as I can remember, including over 100 of his short stories in the original publication edtion going back to 1952. I've got all movies related to him, inluding Barjo, which is really pretty good, as an aside. Even the Valis opera on CD which is kind of strange.

Anyway, this movie, as said elsewhere, is a very good B-movie. There are no A-list actors here, mediocre special effects and some dropped threads in the story line here and there. But in general is the kind of movie I expect to be shown on a Saturday afternoon scary movie matinee.

Don't watch this expecting a high intensity movie. There are parts that are slow, but for the most part it moves along in a fairly steady pace keeping you interested in it long enough to finish your popcorn.

The ending is expected and nothing is really a surprise. Almost looks like a grad school film project, but nothing wrong with that, look at Halloween and THX 1138.

So, neither 1 nor 5 stars, but in the middle. Find it used, well worth 5 bucks.

IT IS NOT WIDESCREEN AS ADVERTIZED!!!!

I have ordered and returned this product 3 times. It is not widescreen. There is no option to for viewing it as widescreen. Amazon has no explanation for the mistake and unfortunately they will not correct the web page. This leads to an interesting question. Why does Mr. Leach state in his review that the disk offers a widescreen option when it doesn't? Either Amazon is massively screwing up the order or he is not reviewing this actual disk from Amazon. If that's the case, he should not be providing a review on it.

WONDERFUL ADAPTATION OF DICK'S SHORT STORY 'SECOND VARIETY' GETS THE MORBID & PARANOID ATMOSPHERE DOWN COLD.......2006-10-26

FIRST OFF: ALL SCI-FI GETS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT FROM ME

I must admit that this type of film, gritty futuristic sci-fi set on another planet, would have to be horrid for me to not like it. Nevertheless, I do believe that, objectively speaking, 'Screamers', based on the short story 'Second Variety' by Philip K. Dick, is an excellent and worthwhile film.

***---> $20 MILLION FOR A B-FILM?

It seems rather amazing that by 1995, a 20-million dollar budget would only produce a 'B film' which the critics have referred to as "budget challenged"! I do agree that more effort should have been made to create the setting for this film, but would that really have made it more effective? 'Screamers' still manages to create a rather chilling atmosphere where it feels like something horrible is about to happen, but we don't quite know what. The world of 'Screamers' seems real enough and the bleakness seems totally appropriate to the subject. Nevertheless, there is something in 'Screamers' that seems like it was filmed with the least amount of scenery, and whatever was on hand was adapted to fit the story. Maybe this is true and maybe not. In any event, the film still works and does not feel like it is suffering from a lack of anything, specifically, that a bigger budget would have bought.

***---> IN A NUTSHELL [there may be plot spoilers below]

Here we have a planet that was exploited for a new form of energy which fizzled out as it generated an immense, toxic, radioactive waste as a by-product of its production. Two factions collided over the issue and it is now 20 years later. The year is 2078 and there is little left of the planet Sirius 6B, once a real garden spot, we are told. A lone soldier comes to the alliance bunker where Marshall Joseph Hendricksson [Peter Weller] is commanding, with a message which seems to offer a peaceful solution to the war that has ravaged the planet. From here the story goes on the road, a kind of trek that we have seen in the 'Wizard of Oz'. Marshall Hendricksson departs from the bunker with one new arrival in search of his N.E.B.s counterpart to sort out the meaning of the peace offering.

--- ON THE WAY --- EXPOSITION AS WE HIKE TOWARD THE NEB's BUNKER

Everything you will ever want to know about the situation on Sirius 6B and more is delivered via a thinly-disguised expository lump. This comes in the form of Hendricksson telling the new arrival, 'Ace' [Andrew Lauer], who he has taken with him on the trek, everything WE need to know in order to better understand this rather meandering tale. On the way to meet with his NEBs counterpart, the Marshall and Ace find a little boy who appears to be orphaned, several NEBs stragglers, and an attractive black marketeer [Jennifer Rubin]. All of these people have a distinct and vital role in the story, and little is as it seems.

--- AND OF COURSE THERE ARE SCREAMERS!!!!!

These screamers are the real deal here and we never really know what is happening with them and what motivates them because the Alliance that created them, represented here by Marshall Hendricksson, doesn't know either. We do know that they are evolving and upgrading themselves in many rather scary ways and that nobody is safe as long as they are in the same universe as human beings.

And there lies the heart of the story -- the Screamers. Just what is their significance to the human race????? After you see the film you will know!

Huuuuuh when i saw the first movie with my dad when i was a little child godzilla amaze me for the rest of my life, the myth of the giant monsters and all the things that change the fiction movies or horror movies, i love the monster and all the history behind him, mechagodzilla ( aka kyryu ) is great! also mothra the giant bee appears too in this film, the new image of godzilla was taken from godzilla 2000, is sooo cool! the movie in general have lots of action since the last encounter with godzilla and kyryu both almost destroyed a great part of tokyo in the last fight and now is payback time! Godzilla is wounded of the last encounter and mechagodzilla is very damaged of one arm and the lost of the main weapon the absolut zero! then mothra appears to save the people of tokyo but which kind of price the villagers of tokyo need to pay to survive another encounter? we don't now!!! until you watch this great movie!

My grandson is a huge Godzilla fan and wanted this movie to add to his collection. I'm so glad that Amazon had it because I couldn't find it anywhere else.

Hello, Godzilla!.......2007-02-17

When I first rented this from Hollywood Video, I was realy having doubts that it was going to be any good, But I got proved wrong in, what, the first 5 minutes? This Godzilla movies is one of the best I've ever seen, it even rivals Godzilla: Final Wars! Godzilla is no good guy in this one. MechaGodzilla is really cool, being the best MechaGodzilla yet, and Mothra is the best mother ever, dying, so her children will live on. And when you see her die, her kids witness it for the first time. seeing their mother die gave them thew energy to help MechaGodzilla take Godzilla down to the botom of the sea. This is a Godzilla movie like not other.

S.O.S. for Sequel of Sequels.......2007-01-30

This film continues the story of Godzilla X Mechagodzilla, and as a sequel, well, it is a swquel. Though the action is good, this film suffers from a little too much repetion of standard old plot devices. Mothra's first appearance is very cool, and the return of Kiryu, a.k.a. MechaGodzilla is exciting. The use of stock footage from previous films links it strongly to the long series, but the ending is a bit unsatisfying, though the larvae wrap up the story effectively.

Strange, yet good.......2007-03-07

It was not too long before I watched this movie that I had seen Godzilla v.s. Megaguirus, So I was hoping it would be the same Godzilla, so when I saw that his heat beam wasn't red, I was very dissapointed. Still, MechaG (as he is called) is absolutely incredible. The most streamlined and most Godzilla-like Mecha-Godzilla ever. But it's a little too much like godzilla X Megaguirus. Still, It's good, but not as good as Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S.

Effects Getting Better, But Story Doesn't Deliver.......2006-04-12

This was better than Final Wars, so I'm giving it two and half stars, but still it didn't top G2K. I thought the premise of developing a mechanical/living hybrid from the sheletal and DNA remains of the Oxygenized Godzilla from the orginal film was great. I was expecting even more thrills and chills when for a moment after the current Godzilla roars, Mechagodzilla starts realizing what or who it is. This showed a lot of promise since a Japanese created machine potentially running amuck may have caused the Japanese to rely on Godzilla to save them from their own creation. Alas, this wasn't pursued and the film went down hill from there. Too bad.

Great Godzilla film!.......2006-02-21

I read a number of the reviews for this movie and none of them mention how different this movie is from the many that came before it. It has a very human aspect to it, the plot does not just begin with Godzilla or some other monster showing up and subsequent events. It shows the evolution of Mechagodzilla's creation and all those involved from scientists to pilots. And for the first time we have a Godzilla movie where a woman soldier takes center stage.

Cool Godzilla Movie........2006-02-13

Great special effects, set design, lots of action and fast moving. This is one one the better Godzilla movies. It has the best pre-title sequence out of the entire series. The action sequences are loaded with explosions and lots of fun.
Mecha-Godzilla is really cool looking and is loaded with options such as laser beams that shoot from his eyes and missles that launch from his fingers. This was the third model of Mecha-Godzilla. This one offers alot more options that are standard as opposed to the previous two base models.
Godzilla will outlive us all, let's bask in the glow of his majestic presence.

As a taste-test for any of the Futurama box sets, the "Futurama - Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection" works as a quickie. Four episodes from different seasons, including three classics. The Beastie Boys appear in "Hell is Other Robots," a plethora of guests on "Anthology of Interest 1," including (Tenth Level) Vice President Al Gore, Stephen Hawking, DnD inventor Gary Gygax and Hansen, the 2002 Emmy-winning "Roswell That Ends Well" and finally the sci-fi movie parody of "The Sting."

Probably the only other animated series that blends pop-culture jokes so seamlessly and effortlessly are "The Simpsons" and "South Park." Compare the easily blended musical puns in "Hell Is Other Robots" to any given "Family Guy" episode. The jokes are made in service to the script instead of the jarring stop/starts of "Family Guy" at its most non-sequitorial. Much like "The Simpsons" at their best, the politics are gently funny (Gore's "Tenth level Vice President, for example) and less sledgehammer.

The hysterically funny "Roswell" episode pokes holes in so many genres that it's impossible to categorize it. Science fiction, 50's Nuclear Scare movies, Alien Autopsies, Gomer Pyle and homophobia all take it in the face in under 25 minutes. "Futurama - Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection" is worth having just for this one episode.

But the subtlety here is limited to the four episodes. It is fun to rent for an evening, but it's really an effective advertisement to get any of the box sets. (Futurama, Vol. 1, Futurama, Vol. 2, Futurama, Vol. 3, Futurama, Vol. 3, Futurama, Vol. 4)

For ultra casual fans only.......2007-04-03

Futurama: Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection collects four episodes of the much loved sci-fi spoofing series from Simpsons creator Matt Groening. The episodes collected here include "Hell Is Other Robots", "Anthology of Interest I", "Roswell That Ends Well", and "The Sting"; all of which are quite funny and great episodes as well, and the DVD itself includes some introductions from Groening and others as well. However, all that being said, this DVD compilation is for ultra casual fans of the series only who don't already own the DVD season box sets. For those that do own the DVD season box sets, there's absolutely no reason to buy this disc at all, but for ultra casual fans of the series or those new to the series and are looking to get into it, this is a decent buy. It's just disappointing that a few more extras weren't included on here, which would have been really nice.

Hell Is Other Robots, Anthology of Interest I, Roswell That Ends Well, The Sting

Let me break down my review into two parts: Futurama the show and Monster Robot Maniac Fun dvd.

First the show. I have grown up with the Simpsons so I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Futurama and it did not dissapoint. The show is funny and irreverant without going too far over the line (like Family Guy). I am pleased to report that like Family Guy the show is going to be given a second chance on Comedy Central. CC has purchased something like 13 episodes which will air in 2008 and they will also be able to show all of the episodes from the original four seasons. Give the show a chance and don't try to compare it to anything else on tv and see if you like it, chances are you might.

The DVD is a nice collection of four episodes (one from each one of the four seasons). The other reviewers have posted a great deal of substance on the episodes themselves so I won't rehash them here. However, I must say that Roswell that ends well is one of the funniest and well-thought-out episodes of the entire series.

me and my 16 year old brother LOVE futurama.there is sometimes jokes that aren't suitable for kids(for example:Fry one time said "My @$$ has blisters from the slide!",but i know it's not a good thing to copy what people on TV say),but hey i'm 9 and my mom gave me permission to start watching this show.yes,i am a girl,but who says we can't like this to?after all,i like sonic,and it's aimed at boys.

Word from the casual fan........2006-01-27

I must say that Futurama is a very interesting show; While comparing this show and Family Guy's fourth season (not the previous three seasons really), I can say that Futurama is much funnier and more bearable than FG's new season. So after seeing this DVD came out, I thought "What the hell. Kick in $10 and you won't have to buy the Volume sets."

Like the FG Freakin' Sweet Collection, Futurama's Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection is a compilation of four episodes (one episode per season) hand-picked by the creator himself. Here are my given thoughts on these episodes:

Hell is Other Robots is probably the funniest episode of the first season, where Bender, while trying to clean up his act, joins a robot religion group which irritates his friends at the Planet Express. Plenty of gags and music to keep you happy. 9/10

Anthology of Interest I is one of my all-time favorites; I always enjoy 10-minute sketches compiled into a half-hour episode like Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror and Family Guy's Viewer Mail. Fry, Leela, and Bender lend their wonders in a "what-if" machine; Bender wonders what if he was 500 feet tall (obvious to see him on the DVD cover art), Leela wonders what if she was a little more impulsive, and Fry wonders what if he never fell into the cryogenic freezer and never come into the future. 10/10

The Emmy-award winning Roswell that Ends Well follows Fry accidentally opening a time portal by a pot of popcorn while at a supernova explosion in a microwave and transporting the entire Planet Express Crew into Roswell, New Mexico in the year 1947, the time where Fry's grandfather was alive...well, at least Fry tries to keep him that way. Funny episode, well-written, period. 9/10

One thing I like about this show is that unlike Family Guy, which would just be a string of gags without any thick plotline, Futurama would concentrate on the characters' evolution and create such solid concepts. That's where The Sting comes in. Leela keeps thinking that Fry is alive and is communicating through her dreams after Fry is instantly killed by a giant bee. The bulk of this episode focuses on the Fry/Leela relationship; Clever and surreal, and while not as funny as the other episodes on this disc, it still has heart. 8/10

Now on to the extras: We get an overall disc intro, as well as individual intros per episode, by creator Matt Groening, developer David X. Cohen, a few producers, and voice actors Billy West and John Dimaggio. We also get a "lost" animatic of Hell is Other Robots with an optional commentary by the same people. This DVD doesn't offer much really, but these extras at least save this from being another bare-bones release. 6/10

Hardcore fans may appreciate the extras in the DVD, but the main focus is for newcomers for the shows, and of course, for casual fans. I still don't feel like buying the season sets yet, simply because the show is still rerunning on Adult Swim and TBS.

Overall score 7/10

Note to fans: The Futurama crew's called back to do four Direct-to-DVD movies so the show still has a future!
