He's had some good performances in supporting parts, but Richard Pryor never starred in a film that captured his comic brilliance the way his concert films did--proving that magic isn't something you can bottle. This 1985 film is no exception, even though it was directed by Walter Hill three years after he turned Eddie Murphy into a movie star with 48 HRS. The seventh film reworking of a warhorse stage play, this movie stars Pryor and John Candy as a pair of minor-league baseball players whose best days are behind them. Then Pryor is informed that he's just inherited a fortune--$300 million. But it comes with a condition: he must spend $30 million in one month, with a number of rules about how much he can spend at one time and how many of any one thing he can buy. Both Pryor and Candy were at the top of their comedy game at this point in time but were utterly failed both by ham-handed direction and by a script that left them higher and drier than seems humanly possible, given the comic talents involved. --Marshall Fine

FUN FUN FUN!!
I would love to have the chance to spend this kinda money!
30 mill to get 300 mill!!
That would make a great TV reality show!!
Another great under dog movie!!

5 out of 5 stars Splendid comedy!.......2007-03-06

Montgomery Brewster (Richard Pryor) is a failed baseball player who inheirites a fortune from his late uncle (Hume Cronyn) but there's a catch to it all. He must spend 30 million dollars within 30 days in order to receive 300 million for he also must never tell anyone else why he has to spend the money, he gets help from his best friend Spike (John Candy) to spend the dough within 30 days or else if he fails he doesn't get the money.

Entertaining and underrated comedy flick is perhaps one of my favorite comedies ever! this is based on an original 1910 novel of the same name but i think this is the best adaptation of that story yet. The film co-stars Pat Hingle ("Batman" and "Maximum Overdrive") and Jerry Orbach, it's a very fun and funny comedy that is worth owning if you like good comedies.

The DVD has good picture with decent sound with only a few extras like production notes, cast and filmmakers bios and the trailer.

5 out of 5 stars Spend 30 million and have fun!.......2007-01-16

First, let me say that I love this movie. Brewster's Millions is great, and I'm biased. The combination of sports, comedy, and a great movie idea cannot be understated.

Richard Pryor and John Candy (as Monty Brewster and Spike Nolan, respectfully) are hilarious, delivering punch-lines, comebacks, and pithy comments throughout the entire movie. They're both washed up baseball players who, because of Brewster's unexpected inheritance. He's got to spend 30 million in 30 days without letting anyone know, without having any assets at the end of the 30 days, and be totally broke. If he's successful, he gets 300 million, the real inheritance. It's an ingenious idea for a movie. How would you do it?

Personally, I don't think it'd be that hard to do. I'd hire a bunch of celebrities to do things for me, essentially what Brewster does on a smaller scale (if they didn't bite at the offers, I'd hire washed-up celebrities that resort to reality tv to stay in the public eye).

I'd hire:
-Halle Berry as my personal bather, like the women that bathe Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America" (same outfits)
-Mike Tyson as a bodyguard
-Dale Earnhardt Jr. to be my chauffeur, make him speed excessively, and pay for his tickets and bail as needed
-Mariah Carey to sing me to sleep every night
-James Earl Jones to narrate my daily life (BOOMING VOICE: Jason wakes up. Jason opens the fridge to get milk for his cereal.)
-The Laker Girls to celebrate every time I opened a door, and Michael Buffer to announce my entry
-Jessica Alba to be my personal masseuse

The possibilities are endless, and the 30 million would be gone well before 30 days.

How would you spend 30 million!?

4 out of 5 stars A Richard Pryor & John Candy Great! 4/5 Stars!.......2005-06-14

I had never heard of this movie, but have always been a John Candy and Richard Pryor fan! Once I read the description, I had to see it! John Candy is Fabulous, and Richard Pryor Gives a great Performance, I can't complain about the movie, I didn't give it all 5 stars because it doesn't set as a classic picture in my mind.

Bottom Line: Great Movie! Lots of Laughs! If you're in my age group (18-24) and are looking for a movie to watch with some friends, I definitely recommend this one, I'll bet they haven't seen it, and they won't be able to hold back the laughs!

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy!.......2004-07-06

Brewster's millions is laugh after laugh! It features and all star cast! And look fast for an appearence by Jeffrey M. Mylett, of "Godspel" fame!

With Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl could've shaped this material into a sappy tribute. On the contrary, as they state in the opening inter-title, "Though circumstances did not allow for the piece to be completed by those who forged its original vision, great care was taken to maintain the integrity and intent of the original edit." Consequently, viewers get a warts and all glimpse of Nirvana as they were, both in concert and off-stage. Live! isn't just a reminder that the Northwest trio was a great band, but that they knew how to have a good time, regardless as to the demons eating away at their frontman. This means Cobain performing in a negligee, clad in a garish gown for MTV's Headbanger's Ball, and stumbling through Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion." Other numbers stem from Bleach and Nevermind, with locations ranging from Seattle to Rio de Janeiro (the five bonus selections are from Amsterdam). In most cases, songs incorporate footage from different shows. Highlights include "Dive," "Territorial Pissings," and an out-of-control "Love Buzz," during which Cobain is attacked by a bouncer--and fights back. The "lowlights" are a screechy version of "Come as You Are" and purposefully sluggish "Smells like Teen Spirit." By this point, the hit had became a burden and the threesome weren't about to pretend otherwise. As Grohl puts it, "For a lot of people, it's like the only Nirvana song, and that's upsetting." This long-awaited DVD reissue features color correction and digitally re-mastering. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars amazing music.......2007-06-06

I bought this on VHS and wore the tape out-twice. I'm so glad they have it on DVD now. It is a testament to how powerful the band could be in concert. Kurt's ability to alter/enhance the meaning of a song by how he ennunciated the words is breathtaking. This DVD has stellar examples of how raw he could be. I think it also shows some of the humor that I think fans who were not around at the time might miss. I love this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A classic .......2007-05-13

This is all anyone needs to learn about Nirvana, go tell Courtney Love we do NOT need a movie.

5 out of 5 stars this is truely a great buy!.......2007-02-13

If you have seen the vhs version of this, than you'll love the dvd version even better, aside from having the extra song's on the dvd version it has great picture quality as well, and the menu section is really great to.

5 out of 5 stars For the memory..........2007-01-20

I think it can be dedicated for all who left a trace in our life.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Nirvana experience..........2007-01-07

I remember buying this on VHS back in the 90's after it was released and being blown away by the footage - it captured the energy and attitude of Nirvana so perfectly. This was a project that was started during Kurt's lifetime yet was finished after his departure and it still managed to convey the original concept of the late Cobain.

The highlights are many on this great video, but among the best are:

1) The performance of 'Territorial Pissings' on a British TV appearance instead of the announced song, 'Lithium'. The set ends with the band trashing the instruments and walking off stage to the sound of feedback, which has the TV host plugging his ears.

2) A Top of the Pops appearance that has the band mockingly throwing their instruments around and blatantly playing off key to the prerecorded 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Kurt sings the song in a high-pitched scream during parts and also a low almost operatic tone, changing the words at points and almost swallows the microphone during the 'Hello, Hello, Hello, How low'.

3) The live footage of the band destroying their instruments during the song 'Endless Nameless' is some of the most powerful stuff on the video. Kurt's heart-wrenching yells accompanied by images of him throwing himself around with his guitar wrecklessly, jumping into speakers and drum kits seems to display not only the attitude of Nirvana as a band, but also reveals the inner turmoil of Cobain.

There is really not any dull moments on this video and the interviews are great. The DVD version comes with some extra footage which is nice bonus material, but the original video is the real gem. A must have for any fan of the band.

RECOMMENDATION: If you don't already own all of Nirvana's albums be sure not to forget the 1992's 'Incesticide', a release of odds and ends that really captures the sloppy brilliance that was Nirvana.

Description

There possibly isn't an album in history that is as genre defining as NIRVANA's "Nevermind." Released in 1991, it single-handedly was responsible for the birth of what became to be known as grunge and has gone on to sell over 8 million copies in the US alone.

"Nevermind" was the second album from the Seattle trio and the first on the DGC label (it's predecessor "Bleach" was released on the Sub Pop label). It was produced by Butch Vig (also the drummer for the band Garbage) and mixed by Andy Wallace.

Nirvana's surviving members Krist Novoselic (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums) talk candidly about their past, the recording of Nevermind and about Kurt Cobain and the legacy that he has left behind. Also featured are exclusive interviews with the likes of Garry Gersh (A&R DGC Records), Butch Vig, Jonathan Ponneman and Nils Bernstein (Sub Pop Records), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Jack Endino, and many more.

Bonus features:
Drain You - the story behind the making of the track.
Going To Record In LA - The story behind why the band recorded Nevermind in LA.
Dave Grohl Joins Nirvana - The story of how Dave Grohl came to join Nirvana.
Polly (Live) - Polly live in concert.
Nevermind - The Album Sleeve - The story of the album cover including interviews with the cover star.

5. Lithium
6. Polly
7. Territorial Pissings

4 out of 5 stars Like Butch Vig Analysis, Needs More.......2007-06-23

Was most interested in Butch Vig's track by track (track as in recording tracks, not album tracks) analysis of the album. Would've liked to have seen more of that, rather than just people talking about the album.

1 out of 5 stars Nirvana: nevermind.......2007-01-10

I am a bit disillusioned because it is not the album, it is only the history

5 out of 5 stars Witness history in the making.......2006-11-18

A look back at the making of the greatest album of all time, featuring interviews with former band members (excluding Kurt of course), rolling stone editors, record company executives and A&R guys and of course legendary producer Butch Vig. Interesting that Vig had no idea he would be in control of what would become the huge selling album Nevermind. You will learn a lot from this 70min documentary and be taken back to a time where grunge was born. You also get to see what effect grunge had on the market once this album was released.

4 out of 5 stars More interesting/informative than I thought!!!.......2006-03-13

First of all, I didn't get this dvd new, I got it used.I looked at it and it seemed to be in good condition so I figured "why not save a few bucks on practically the same thing?"That way I wouldn't have to worry as much if it was a dud, ya see?

Anyways, the dvd was better than I thought, so I definitely got my moneys worth!!!Butch Vig was pretty cool talking about the tracks and tricks of the trade that were used for the album.I think that "Drain You" is not only one of Nirvana's best tracks on Nevermind, but on any of their albums, so I'm glad it was mentioned!!!Ofcourse I would've enjoyed it much more if Butch Vig had gone as in depth with tracks like "On A Plain", "Stay Away", "Breed" and "Territorial Pissings" as he did with the others.

I also really enjoyed hearing about how Dave Grohl entered the band, making them not only more successful, but also a more powerful, better songwriting band too!!!Dave Grohl truly was one of the best things that happened to be with/in Nirvana!!!Once again, it's not about success as much as it was about them finally finding the perfect, much better all around musician for Nirvana. He not only does incredible drum work with/in Nirvana, he also does great (background) singing, which is also talked about and demonstrated on this dvd.

Even if you've already seen this dvd with a friend, I still recommend that you get it.It's worth a second watch for sure!!!

(I'm also really interested in seeing one of these about In Utero though.I like it just as much as Nevermind and believe that it's just as significant, ya know?)

5 out of 5 stars Finally, something good!.......2006-01-18

I've seen so many Nirvana documentary dvd's out there that are a waste of my 37 minutes. This one, on the other hand, is one of the best one's that I've seen. It sucks that we KNOW there won't be any new Nirvana stuff out, so it's good to see the old stuff in great detail which this dvd provides. I won't explain the content because every other review does, but I'm a huge Nirvana fan, almost obsessive, and I think anyone out there looking for Nirvana dvd's are the same way. So hearing good reviews on a dvd such as this one's means a lot because these are typically true fans. Reading the good reviews is the whole reason I checked it out.

The only negative comment I think I could say is that I wish it could've been a little bit longer and maybe showed more of Kurt personally. I feel selfish even saying that because I know there is only so much footage taken and you can't go back in time and make more. That's why I kept this at five stars. I loved the interviews with Krist and Dave. They don't talk much about Nirvana now days so it was awesome to hear things from their perspective and what those days were like for the band. And we get to see the Nirvana baby!

If your a big fan, it's worth watching. I wish they would do a Classic Album dvd for In Utero too just so I can see more Nirvana!

The boys are back in town, but they're wearing their carbon-paper suits in this frantic but not nearly as funny sequel to the action-comedy hit. The first time around, the combination of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte had the element of surprise going for it: Who expected these two to have chemistry? This time, chemistry is virtually all they have in a veritable rehash of the first film. What plot there is has to do with Nolte's needing Murphy (who is just out of jail) to help him clear his own name and save his job on the police force. Director Walter Hill is back in place, but this time the script is the work of action hack Jeb Stuart and the movie barely gives Murphy room to unleash his comic riffs; when he does, we're expecting them (though he's still entertaining). --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An awesome sequel!.......2006-12-04

Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte are back together for this sequel to the 1982-83 hit 48 HRS. As I mentioned in the review for the first film,Murphy had a long string of hit films in between that film and this one. Nolte's in-between films include DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS and EXTREME PREJUDICE. Plain clothes cop Jack Cates(Nolte) is on the verge of losing his police badge. We first see Reggie Hammond(Murphy) in jail for a repeat offense and he is awaiting release. Jack visits Reggie, telling him that they have more work to do. Reggie tells Jack,"You and I ain't got s--t to do! I did that cop s--t once before and don't like it.". Reggie reluctantly plays the police game again with Jack who's on suspension and they pursue a drug dealer known as the Iceman, who turns out to be Jack's co-worker Sgt. Ben Kehoe(the late Brion James). On the day of Reggie's release, all subsequent highlights for him are bad. He's been shot at,one of his favorite cassettes was stolen, the bus he rode flipped over 17 times unbelievably, and his car exploded via planted explosives. Reggie was not so thrilled by Jack visit to him in jail("I haven't seen you in years,I thought you were my friend."). Reggie even noticed differences in Jack, those being weight loss thanks to giving up booze,a new hairstyle and new clothes. "Times have changed.",quipps Jack. Yes,apparrel and hairstyles have changed between 1982(when the first film was made) and 1989(when this one was made). Sadly,Jack and Reggie aren't so much "best buds" in this film like they were in the first one. In many of the joint scenes,Reggie was so upset with Jack, mostly because Jack failed to repay money to Reggie. There are other heavily armed drug dealers who were out to get the Iceman, who ends up shot to death in one of the last scenes. Reggie,at his demand,is shot by Jack, but not fatally. Reggie is enroute to the hospital via ambulance. Jack claims a cigarette lighter from the Iceman,to remember the adventure by. The barfight scene was pretty cool although Jack initiated it and it ends with Reggie firing a bullet through the nightclub's ceiling. I liked this film better than the first. This Paramount film was directed by Walter Hill, like the first film.

1 out of 5 stars A very bad movie.......2006-08-04

"48 hours" was a classic -- one of the most original movies ever made. This sequal is just bad. The plot is contrived and doesn't make much sense, neither Eddie nor Nick Nolte looks like they enjoyed making it, and the pure joy and fun that made the first movie so captivating is completely missing.

Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars It Grows on You, But Better than the Original, c'mon Bradly!.......2006-07-22

This film is one that grows on you over time. At first viewing it seems sub par to the first, but then gets better with repeat viewing. Much like Beverly Hills Cop III. Maybe over time it gains a nostalgic factor? The last two reviewers are really F'ed in the head! They are both way off the mark. The film was shot in the Bay Area and sorrounding region. Much was filmed in the central valley of California, and the prison was the same one as in the first. The music is one of the best parts of the movie. I really like that steel drum sound. What I don't like is when they try to repeat things that were naturally funny or well recieved in the first film. It just seems forced and unamusing. Reggie did eventually recognize the Iceman, but it was difficult, because he only caught a glimpse of him once a long time ago, and was probably scared crapless when he did. A cop that is the head of a crime ring is the perfect cover, and he would keep going to work everyday to keep his cover, and use his position and knowledge as a police officer to be even more powerful and in control.

There are always things done in films that are unreal and exaggerated. I don't think we all believe there is an island out there with dinosaurs on it, do we? I mean Breaking glass at a prison visitation booth, really isn't that far fetched, or unbelievable, now is it? Maybe some of the scenes were filmed down in LA, but suppose to be San Francisco? I do know that a lot of it was filmed in the N. California area. Maybe all the liberal crybabies didn't want a violent film shot in their beautiful city? Maybe they just thought Frisco had become too gay to shoot in? Who knows and who cares, that's the least of the problems with the movie!

The first film was the perfect buddy flick, and had the perfect combination of humor and drama. Most would agree, so if you don't you're a minority, and most likely WRONG! Hell, they wouldn't even have made a sequal if the original wasn't so successful, because it was so well done! The first is a Classic, and the sequel is noteworthy, and gets better as time goes by. I would definately enjoy sitting down with a nice cool drink, an array of snackables and enjoying both in one sitting. And that's the name of that tune!

2 out of 5 stars Stinky Sequel Sucks; Even Eddie Murphy has said he hated it!.......2006-07-04

If the first movie was day, this one is night. This movie was so full of holes and imcomplete plot twists I don't even know where to begin. So why not right here?

SPOILER ALERT
1)Why the hell would a cop turn out to be the head of an organized crime syndicate? Why even clock in every day, if your interests lie elsewhere? Somebody else asked why Eddie Murphy would not recognize Kehoe (or whatever his name was) as the Iceman? The answer is: you're right, it was a stupid loose end, and quite unbelievable.

2)Please just film a movie in the city it's supposed to be in. We all know it was in San Francisco the first go around. If its supposed to be in SF the 2nd go around, don't film in LA, or elsewhere, and pretend its SF. We LOCALS will know the difference, and more importantly, care. (The fake tourist cable cars on wheels was killing me!!!) And any good writer could have come up with a storyline in a different city. What a weird coincidence, Jack gets a tip that the "Iceman" has moved to LA, and guess who has been transferred down there to another prison? Anything, please!

3)You know that glass in prisons that separate the visitor from the prisoner when they talk on the phone? It can't be broken. Trust me, it can't. The part where the prisoner shatters the glass with his hands was hysterically inacurate. Why even have that in a movie? Stupid!!! Can you say "overkill?"

4) Okay, so Jack and Reggie haven't seen each other in 8 years, or however long its supposed to be in the movie. Does that mean they're complete enemies immediately upon setting eyes upon each other? Why not have some conflict, which makes their dislike for each other more believable? Than when Jack throws the baskeball at Reggie's face, we won't think its completely asinine!

5)To have Reggie sitting in his prison cell, singing the same exact song (Roxanne by the Police) with a walkman, is ludicrous! Come on, I'm sure the writers are clever enough to come up with something new!!!

6)The musical sequences when the motorcyclists crash through the movie walls, and many other scenes, were exactly the same as the original. I heard this music about 50 times, that I've watched the original. I think they could have mixed up the musical scores a bit. I can understand using the same theme, but even Dirty Harry movies and Star Wars movies mix up the version of music they use in each new movie.

7)Back storyline, about Murphy being pressured to get some money to an old friend's daughter was touching, but not very believable, and probably un-necessary. Didn't hold my interest. I'm sure the rest of the audience just ignored it too!

There are many other truly bad things shown in this movie. I've just touched on a few.

1 star for bad movie, and an extra star because Eddie did have some moments. Nick Nolte looked like he was having a "bad arrest" week.

Two thumbs down! Way down!!!

MC White said: This one sucked!

3 out of 5 stars STANDARD FOLLOW UP.......2006-06-06

ANOTHER 48 HRS is just that--another "48 Hrs.", but this time, it's not as much fun. The first movie had the freshness of the pairing of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, and had lots of action and humor. This time around, the chemistry might still be there but it seems a little shopworn, and it's not as much fun. The plot is a rehash of thousands of crime movies, and Murphy who had now become a box office smash, gets top billing, but doesn't capitalize as much on Reggie's sense of comic timing. Andrew Divoff, who was to go on to make the WISHMASTER films, is a vile and convincing villain, but the rest of the cast seems to phone in their performances. If you really liked the first movie, you'll probably enjoy this but may be disappointed when you're finished viewing.

You could call it a meeting or even a festival, but such words are entirely insufficient to describe the concept of Kumbh Mela. In Short Cut to Nirvana, Maurizio Benazzo and Nick Day take a loose, non-judgmental look at a gathering that has been taking place for over two millennia. As many as 70 million attended when they shot the film in 2001 (whittled down to 85 minutes from 3,500 hours of footage). The celebration takes place every 12 years, between the holy Indian rivers of the Ganges and the Yamuna. Even Mark Twain once made the trip. The documentary opens with his recollection of an 1895 Kumbh Mela: "Pilgrims plodded for months to get here, worn, poor, and hungry, but sustained by unwavering faith." Then there's His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, who has attended twice, the first time in the 1960s. He came to learn about other religions and to promote harmony between them. He makes it clear that he isn't there to convert anyone, but rather to learn. The film's unofficial guide is Swami Krishnanand, a Hindu monk, who translates the messages of various yogis, sadhus, and other spiritual figures. He is joined by a couple of open-minded Westerners, Dyan Summers and Justin Davis, who share their thoughts about the experience with the filmmakers. Short Cut to Nirvana is a lively, impressionistic introduction to a monumental event. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

This enthralling documentary treks to the heart of the largest gathering of humanity on Earth: the Kumbh Mela. The huge festival has been held in India every 12 years for over two millennia, but is little known in the West—until now. The film spectacularly captures the sheer spiritual bliss, eternal wisdom and candid joy that envelop both the festival's pilgrims and world-renowned gurus in attendance. SHORTCUT TO NIRVANA also features a special appearance by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

2 out of 5 stars So so, more freakshow than spiritual journey.......2007-05-29

I wasn't too impressed with this film. It was hyped up quite a bit when it came out, but I don't think it delivered. It seemed to be, basically, a small bunch of wide-eyed naive Westerners being led around by a young swami of dubious character. He showed them all the crazy far-out gurus and swamis and guys who stretch out their genitals, etc. I think that had the filmmakers known their subject matter a little better the film would have been much better. Instead we are experiencing a proxy version of these young astonished, but ultimately ignorant, foreigners' quasi-religious carnival ride. It also seemed to wander around in it's subject matter. By the end I was just glad to be able to move on to watch something else. Also, why did someone tag this film with "Bhutan"?

5 out of 5 stars the best kumb mela film.. so far.......2007-01-11

I have been to 2 Kumbh Melas including the one when the film was made. While the film is not 100 % great is is the best representation of the Mela I have seen so far, it gives you the feeling of what goes on at the Mela... the confusion, the croweds etc.. thanks for making this film!!

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor.......2006-10-16

This was a very poor document. I had met the swami that takes you all over, and spent some time with him. He is a complete fake with a huge ego problem.

This documentary is an embaresment to Hinduism and the Kuhmba Mela. They only showed one true saint in this documentary and that was Ammachi.

There were far more true saints there that could have been shown.
There were true Guru's there. True renunciantes and holy men.

Instead, they showed ego driven teachers, false prophets, and naked men begging for attention by stretching and pulling things with their penises.

How enlightening can that be?

5 out of 5 stars what a beautiful ride..........2006-09-05

...no this little documentary is not going to lay bare the complexities of Hinduism, just give you a little taste of its sights and sounds and maybe some of its essential spirit. India, like Hinduism, is a riot of colors, smells, masses of humanity with all their noise, idiosyncrasies, trash, sparkle, excrement, smiles, neuroses, et. al.---and that's what you get 90 minutes of.

There are a small handful of Western characters that the camera keeps cutting back to, in order for us to see what they are experiencing while there, which adds a nice extra layer to the documentary format. One of them is an American of Indian descent who sort of bridges the cultural gap somewhat, along with an Indian swami who speaks excellent English and is quaintly smitten by the pixie-ish blonde from New York.

Then there's a Japanese woman who is virtually entombed for 9 days underground where she practices "samadhi" (profound meditative concentration) and then pulled back up again. A yogi who wraps his wanger around a stick and has people stand on the stick...youch, painful just to watch even though the homey's smiling the whole time! The Dalai Lama makes an appearance to plead for religious harmony and other soft-sell subjects, interesting nonetheless.

So despite the documentary format, there's plenty here to maintain viewer interest throughout.

One of the nice "special features" of the DVD is a section called "Discourses" which has in-depth interviews/lectures with a couple of spiritual leaders...allowing for a little more insight into Eastern philosophy than just watching the movie by itself.

Highly, highly recommended and worth owning.

3 out of 5 stars Carnival of curiosities.......2006-06-27

I have to say I don't feel any closer to nirvana after watching this film. The filmmakers treated the Kumbh Mela like a carnival filled with curiosities, rather than viewing it as a spiritual event. I suppose it is hard to capture the deeper spiritual nuances of this circus-like atmosphere but I don't think they had a very fitting host in Swami Krishnanand, who seemed mostly interested in his self-fulfillment and aggrandizement. As one of the women gurus pointed out, only about 20% of those 70 million purportedly gathered at Prayag (although I think that number includes all four sites) are after spiritual fulfillment, the rest are just along for the ride.

"I love that everyone is really an actress, is really a singer," confesses the ever hopeful Susan Dey, a bartender turned singing strip-o-gram still waiting for her big break. So, apparently, does director Robert Dornhelm, an Austrian who brings a fresh eye and an easygoing sympathy to a familiar story. Dey's new roommate, pizza delivery guy/budding songwriter Tom Hulce, is hopelessly in love with her while she falls madly into bed with her delightfully deluded duplex neighbor Michael Bowen, an Austrian bodybuilder ("body sculptor," he's quick to correct) waiting to become the next Schwarzenegger. The modesty of this 1986 American indie is infectious: they may never get their break, but the little family they make will provide the support they need along the way. Cheech Marin costars as Bowen's training-gym boss, and that's Cassandra ("Elvira") Peterson as the gym receptionist. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars A fun movie filled with quirky characters........1999-06-02

Echo Park is an extremely funny movie, filled with some classic humor presented by a trio of truly quirky characters. Perhaps Susan Dey's best movie of all time! The character that is an Arnold Schwarzenegger wannabe is terrificly funny! This film is more timely now than ever!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly offbeat, interesting, good lines, very funny........1999-04-18

I've only seen this thing once, but loved it. I cannot believe that a movie this good isn't released on video.

    4 out of 5 stars I Like Echo Park - the neighborhood.......1998-11-25

The movie itself isn't bad, but what I like best is the locale. Echo Park is a neighborhood that, while it might not be the safest place, has a lot of character. I also enjoyed watching a younger Tom Hulce work with an offbeat script. The ending is too abrupt and the movie gets rather bizarre at times, but at least it is unique. And it is more unique in a good, rather than bad sense.

As this comic sci-fi adventure continues, the filmmakers toy with the mutual attraction and repulsion of the characters. Hibiki's presence causes problems among the all-female crew of the Majel pirate ship. Dita is attracted to him but doesn't know how to express her curiosity or affection without annoying the hot-tempered pilot. But the mismatched pair must work together in the CG mecha battles, especially after squad leader Miea is injured. While Duero fights to save her life, Miea experiences series of flashbacks that reveal her tragic past, including her troubled relationship with her mother. This spoof of adolescent sexuality would play better if the filmmakers indulged in fewer jiggle shots and gratuitous female nude scenes. Rated 13 Up: Nudity, violence, risqué humor. --Charles Solomon

    5 out of 5 stars B-E-A-UTIFUL SERIES.......2005-07-21

I've seen almost evry episode of Vandread so to catch up I'm going to get all the episodes on DVD. Takeshi Mori, you blew us away. Amazing graphics and sound. The problems of romance, hatred, happieness and others were well put I've seen the ending but ain't say'n nothin. I'll tell you though It made me cry, which is something I rarely do unless the movie is really big.

5 out of 5 stars Could this series get any better?.......2003-01-24

I own the first three DVDs of Vandread (Stage 1), and absolutely adore them! This is my favorite show, and it just keeps going! I love it! The characters are wild and wacky, elegant and prim, fun and stuffy, and everything in between. The storyline is original, and the animation is gorgeous. The only (really minor) downside is that the space battles can get so complex it becomes hard to distinguish the mecha and attacks. But then again, I have to wear glasses because of bad eyesight, so it's probably just me. And girls, this series is not just for men--most of my female friends love it just as much as I do (I'm a girl).

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest anime ever.............2002-12-21

Many anime has been made and shown throughout the world. Some has climbed the summit of being the greatest anime series ever mad, and some have not. Well, Vandread is one of those who has reached that summit.

Being an Asian, it's easier to understand a character's feelings and espressions. But, that shouldn't stop a non-Asian to watch this. With great plot and character-development, the series evolved to become understandable and humorous. Not to mention the stunning 3D and CGI effects being used to crete the surrounding area of the universe.

Being separated by two races by two different planets, Meger is controlled by the women whereas Talark is ruled by the men. The unability of reason between the two races result in a series of confrontations. A group of female pirates made their way out to escape from Meger and 'help' them to fight against the men. Soon, the women pirates capture three men from the losing party as well as their mothership. Unfortunately, by doing so, there were stranded 250 days apart from Meger. In the ship itself, confrontations between the three men and the pirates continued...

The quest to return home was made complicated by the Earth with the operation 'Harvest' and everyone onboard the mothership have to co-operate to stop this from happening. At the same time, feelings began to be shared between a man, Hibiki Tokai and a girl, Dita. Together with Jura and team leader Meia, they form one of the greatest fleet in the universe.

The music in the series are especially good, with 'TRUST' as the opening song.

If you have nothing else to do during the weekend and in need for some family time with children or by entertaining yourself, enjoy this. You're sure not be disappointed!

    ...

4 out of 5 stars The story thickens..........2002-07-17

The second installment of the Vandread series continues to add to the storyline. The history of Meia is revealed. The relationship between Dita and Hibiki comes to a head, as Hibiki is overwhelmed by the attention. Jura shows her vain and jealous sides as she sets a plot in motion to allow her to "combine" with Hibiki's Van-type. The crew begins to show its "colors" making them more real, genuine.
Though there is action and comedy in the episodes of this volume, the main thrust seems to be character development. It really made the story more compelling for me.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Best Cyberpunk film ever........2006-07-29

I know this is quite a claim, but I think this film gets Cyberpunk by the book. If you have read and enjoyed "Neuromancer" by Gibson, or "La última calle de la soledad" by Porcayo, you will know what cyberpunk is, and this film gets the essence very well.

The corporation, the sentient program, the hacker, the lost love, the friend, the cyber-prothesis, the well-known brands; everything is where it should. And the soundtrack is just great on its own.

And Matrix owns a lot to this film. I just would've wanted it to be in it's original language.

5 out of 5 stars Beats the Matrix.......2006-04-10

This is a more low-key SF thriller in cyberpunk mode. Jimi has created a brilliant computer game, called Nirvana. However, one of his characters have developed sentinence, and wants to get out.
In a way, the world of Nirvana is grimmer than that of the Matrix, since it so much more believable, with megacorporations with their own laws and those outside of the corporations, and, hence, outside of the system, live in squalid but vibrant undercity complexes or travel around with portable cyberconnections.
The acting is superb with Christoph Lambert as a very credible burnt out hacker that just wants to be reunited with his dead wife.
This realesa of this minor masterpiece is long overdue. It takes a little while for the film to get started, but when it does - it does it with a vengeance.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining if convoluted thriller.......2005-06-29

In the tradition of The Crimson Rivers and Druids, this French language film loses something in the translation. But the idea is novel, even if it has been used before. It's not a great Lambert film, but's it worth it for die-hard fans.

The film follows Jimi Dini (Lambert) - a computer game programer, who's latest game is infected with a virus. The result - the game's main character get's a mind of his own and realizes that nothing's real, even him. He begs Lambert to destroy the game, so Lambert sets out on a journey through a futuristic Europe to do so. Also, Lambert is looking for his long lost love, and he also wants to shut down the big computer corporation that runs everything.
As I said the film is hurt in translation - and you don't always have a clear idea of what is going on. But the visuals are often stunning thanks to director Gabriele Salvatores and cinematographer Italo Petriccione, so that helps you through the story.
