Beastmaster:The master of all shows!!.......2004-03-25
Beastmaster is one of the best tv shows I've ever seen(following Andromeda and Mutant X)in my life. This is what every show would have:A great masterpiece!!!!
Excellent! Party Time!.......2004-02-10
I am writing this review mainly to counteract another reviewer who gave the dvd 1 star because it did not have English subtitles. That's wrong!!
Anyway, season two of Beastmaster is good, not as good as the first I think, but it's pretty good. In the end of season one, Tao decides to travel to his home in the Middle of the World. So, in this season they travel there, and they finally get there in episode 5 or 6 or somewhere in there. Before that they meet Arina, portrayed by Marjean Holden. I don't know where they found her, but she is amazing, exotic, and looks like a true warrior, not like that wannabe Lucy Lawless from New Zeland or something. She has some hidden agenda, and the Sorceress gets suspicious. Well that hidden agenda is to help a dude with really white hair to overthrow Zed, because she wants revenge for Zed's past transgressions. When they finally get to Xinca (it is the city in the Middle of the World, Tao's home), Tao raves how it is civilized. Well Dar does not want anything to do with civilization after they leave. Some monks try to kill them and stuff. They pay a few more visits to Xinca later on, however and I think this is where the finale takes place, if I am not mistaken.
The dude with the white hair, by the name of Voden, is the king of the Nords, and he is to replace Zed as the ruler of the Territories and nearby regions. He wants the Beastmaster for some reason. The Sorceress helps Zed escape, and he vows to come back, with better weapons, in the season finale.
While Zed builds up an army, the Beastmaster has to deal with Voden, who is really annoying in that he wants the Beastmaster to command and army of animals for him. Voden is portrayed with exceptional intelligence (as opposed to Zed's brute force, not that Zed was not intelligent ...) and I don't know why he keeps insisting on this ridiculous idea, especially after the Beastmaster explains to him that he cannot control the animals, just ask for their help. It is the animal's choice whether to cooperate. Well Voden is stubborn, and in the end I am still unclear on his motivations.
The budget for the show isn't exactly "through da roof" if you know what I mean, so if you have never seen the show, don't expect a lot in terms of special effects, but the show still looks very nice. It is just that getting an elephant to storm a wall of a city (in the finale) was a huge thing for them. It looked ridiculous, but still inpressive. I don't think they have ever had an elephant on the show before that, well maybe once. Also the show's trade mark "morphing effect" is really annoying. If you can overlook these minor annoyances, however, and come to appreciate its simplicity, you will immerse yourself ... aah forget it, just buy the DVDs.
Stinks!.......2003-12-30
It does not have English subtitles! It is not even closed-captioned. Not recommended.
Great Series never a dull moment. Trekkies: try this out :-).......2003-11-21
I was very sceptical when I bought the first series thinking I would hate a series based on a muscle bound Tarzan like man. I am an avid Trekkie and have watched every Star Trek episode made, up to and including the 2nd season of Enterprise. What could I possibly see in a Jungle based series with no scientific implements or space exploration.
The very first episode blew my mind with it fabulous cinematography and excellent sound effects. Once I got into the series it started to look very similar to the original Star trek. With Dar replacing Captain Kirk and Tao as his right hand man the thinker (Spok without the Vulcan ears). They are out to explore the world and right its wrongs. Amusingly the sourcerers even have their own version of the "Prime Directive" which prohibits them from interfering in human affairs.
The special effects are great, the costumes are wonderful and the setting absolutely spectacular.
I found season 2 to be even better than season 1. I can't wait to get my hands on season 3.

Absolutely the Worst Fantasy Series Ever.......2007-02-23
Being too young to had seen the original "BeastMaster" starring the dude from "V" I can't compare the two (nor should the original series really matter in a review of this one), but if it was 1/10th as horrible as the latest "BeastMaster" they should had let it rest in peace. Why do I hate this series so much? For one thing, I can't stand all the cheesy pseudo-historical messes that came out around this time (Hercules, Xena, and this). The acting in all was awful, the actors were by and large hired for their looks, and the writers must had been as well since they obviously had neither talent nor imagination. The lead actor, whom so many women seem to think is just so hunky, looks way to skinny (I can actually count all of his ribs which is something that is not attractive in either gender). The storylines are beyond bad and the actors look as if they themselves want to tune to another channel as they deliver their sorry lines. It's just a very stupid show. The only reason why I gave it two instead of one star is because of the Asian sidekick (whose name escape me). He showed actual talent and charm (certainly way more than the Barbie boy lead whose acting skills are consist of basically standing around trying to make his cheekbones more pronounced) and as someone with an Asian son it's always great to see another Asian actor on the screen. If you're thinking about buying this, check it out on the Sci-Fi channel sometime and see if you can watch it without muting it. If so, then mazel tov and purchase, but if you're like me and want some actual acting and quality storylines and plot then you will have to skip this one.
Gorgeous Dan.......2005-11-24
Well, I haven't bought this boxset, but I'd buy it and all the following seasons just for one reason: Daniel Goddard. He's simply an example of male beauty, pure physical perfection.
A segway into the fantasy realm.........2005-04-26
This was probably the first sci fi/fantasy show I have ever seen besides Star Wars. It happened that I came across it one day as a Sunday morning rerun, and I was instanty hooked all those years ago. Since then, I always hope that reruns will be shown. They did for a while, but then were taken away. Recently Sci Fi on my DISH network showed 8 episodes in a row one Friday and I DVR'd them, and have been watching them again and again.
One very big difference is that there are few big special effects. In the beginning episodes there is a badly done fire monster, but this show has much less of that than Hercules or Xena. I strongly dislike those shows, particularly Hercules, because of that. Beastmaster has more of nature theme to it, and, while I originally was drawn by the half-naked men, I have come to just love the show itself. I don't find Tao annoying at all: I find him adorable. Dar gets waay too much credit :)
I was under the impression that this was shot in New Zealand like the others, but another review says no. Oh well. Daniel Goddard sounds very American to me, and I am American. But I don't care about the actors: I just have loved the show since my first viewing.
I highly recommend it for the fantasy lovers. It's not too over the top, yet it is subtly fantasy/sci fi.
Hokey Rubbish and bad acting........2005-03-09
This series is hokey rubbish, and at the same time it takes itself WAY too seriously, like its High Art, or something.
I started watching it on TV because I went to the same gym as Daniel Goddard, the muscle-bound star who plays Dar. (Cronulla Gym, then when it changed owners, Hotbods at Miranda, both in Sydney's southern suburbs.) Hey, that's right ... Daniel Goddard is Australian. Couldn't you tell from his appalling attempt at and American accent? By the way, Big Dan was a total arrogant *%$# when I used to see him at the gym (1991 - 1996), way before his 'acting' days had begun; he would strut around the place like he was a god, throwing skinny guys off machines that he wanted to use. ("Excuse me, mate, would you mind getting off that, I gotta do a Super Set"). I can imagine what he's like now. So girls, keep giving this !#@* a swollen head with your salavating comments, I'm sure he's soaking it up.
Anyway, back to my review, and some more interesting trivia. This TV show was made at Movie World on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The Gold Coast is a mixture of Waikiki, Miami and Las Vegas, (but with only one casino). This tends to show through in the general look of the show. Glitzy, fake and arrogant would describe the show's look quite well. The outdoor scenes were shot in the national parks and rainforests behind the Gold Coast, and if you look carefully, you can spot the Eucalyptus trees that make up the rainforest canopy. It looks pretty silly having dark age barbarians running around the Aussie bush.
Which brings me to the reason why Big Dan is the star of the show. Apparently, they needed someone who was an Aussie citizen to be the star, due to our actor's union laws etc. Dan won out due to his body, not his acting ability. Incidently, when I was seeing Dan at the gym (and he must have lived there, as he was there every night I was there, no matter what night it was) all those years ago, he was FAT FAT FAT covering the muscle. He was huge, yes lots of muscle, but mainly fat. He obviously lost a vast amount of weight to audition for this show. He actually looks too thin compared to how he used to be like.
If you want a good fantasy TV series, try Heath Ledger in Roar. Now that is a good show!
Like Herc & Xena, but better...if that's possible........2004-12-28
With the release of Herc and Xena to DVD, I am gladly collecting them. Xena seems like a little more serious and darker show than Herc, so I like it more, despite the fact that I'm a guy. But anyway, so I sit there and watch Herc or Xena and I remember that there's this other show that's somewhat similar in nature (no pun intended) to both Herc and Xena...and that's Beastmaster.
Beastmaster...I remember just checking out this series from time to time when it originally aired. Saw it on the episode guide of DISH Network and would tune in just to see if I could get into it. Unfortunately I couldn't. I found Tao to be bit annoying and quite frankly silly. So I never watched. But like I said, after watching my Herc and Xena DVDs, I decided that I wanted more and decided to give this Beastmaster a try on DVD. I can say happily that it was NOT a mistake. This series is great (when seen from the beginning). I guess my problem was just seeing a few scenes from Season 3 I think.
What makes this series great is that there are season-long story arcs with numerous re-occuring characters that really contribute to some great continuity between episodes. Now this isn't continuity as you would find on Deep Space Nine or Farscape, but continuity more in the way of Stargate SG-1 continuity. Events or character development (mostly with the re-occuring characters) that would occur in previous episodes would be relevant in future episodes. You didn't get this with Xena or Herc. In fact, I really didn't see this with DS9.
For example, Season 1 here basically has one story arc dealing with Dar's long lost love, Kyra, who has been imprisoned by King Zad and his Terrons of which of course leads to Dar's quest to free her. Of course there's your filler episodes in between, but even still they contribute in someway to the over-all arc.
The acting is better than average than your ordinary TV show of this genre. Steven Grives who plays King Zad is excellently cast. One of the better TV villains in quite a while. The excellent casting among the guest stars is also a plus with this series.
A note to Herc or Xena fans, this series is actually more serious than those two. The fight scenes are a bit more graphic and realistic looking, despite the occasional wire-fu moves. And as others have said here, the use of the animals and other guest stars at times do get emotional. I even teared up a time or two.
Special effects are decent. CGI use is pretty realistic as compared to the goofy shots in Xena and Herc.
These DVD sets come in those 6-disc amarray cases which I don't really care for actually, but I guess they're better than those multi-disc digipacks. Technical specs are 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen which is very nice. Image quality is top notch with the occasional grainy dark shot. Sound however is just DD 2.0 which is a shame as this series would benefit greatly with a 5.1 track. But even with that the 2.0 track is quite adequate with ambient sounds coming from the rear channels.
So in summary, if you like Xena and Herc, and want more of the same fantasy genre...don't hesitate to dive into Beastmaster. But shop around for the best price. ;)

They weren't ugly, they were gorgous. I don't know why the director wanted to place those ugly masks over thier beauty, I mean not all witches are ugly!

Wonder why this season is OOP..........2006-11-25
I wonder why this third and last season of Beastmaster: The Series is Out-of-Print. I got all three seasons from another on-line retailer for $75 total. (About $25 each plus tax). I bet it has something to do with Marc Singer being in it. Probably due to some royalty conflict or something. Shame too because while all seasons of Beastmaster were good with their own story arc, this third season was unique because it included Marc Singer.
Well, anyway, I'm glad I bought my set back when they were readily available.
Underappreciated!.......2006-08-27
The third season of the Beastmaster is where the series really begins to shine. It's just a shame that it had to be the last one.
This season's main plot twist was the fact that Dar now has a spirit warrior Dartanus (interestingly enough, he is played by Marc Singer, the actor who played Dar in the original 1980's film) who fights beside Dar in his quest to help rescue his family and return the name of his father, Eldar, to the place of respect that it deserves, while all the while trying to foil Balcifer's plan to take over the universe. It may seem like a tall order, but each episode is broken up enough that the entire process doesn't seem too rushed. As with any TV series, there is always a side-quest Dar must embark on that must be solved during the show's 60 minutes, but at the end of every episode, something has always happened that has either helped or hindered Dar's overall quest to rescue his family. These little happenings are what really keep the show flowing onward.
The special effects are completely lacking, and are even laughable in some instances, but if you don't take the show too seriously, they really won't disappoint you. You can really think of the fight sequences in the same right. After all, in my opinion, it is the plot that really makes the show shine - and a good looking Daniel Goddard as the lead actor really doesn't hurt either.
The extended plot, for those who are interested is this: Dar, in the previous two seasons of the show, believed that he was the last surviving member of the Sula clan (his girlfriend Kira, having died in the first season, left him as the only one). The Sulas had been wiped out by King Zad and his forces. King Zad is your typical ruler who wants every ounce of power imaginable, "what he says goes," that sort of thing. During the first season, Dar was hunting down Zad who had taken Kira prisoner. After Kira dies (by way that I won't speak of here in case people haven't seen the show), Dar goes after Zad for revenge. Being the Beastmaster means that he has the ability to communicate with animals, and all the while, he accumulates new friends that help him on his journey. A rival king, Voden, comes into play during the second season, as well as some interesting developments concerning the Ancient One and his two pupil sorceresses. The second season is definitely the worst, so I won't go into too much detail about that. That basically takes us up to this third and final season.
Dar meets Dartanus, who tells him that everything he has ever known has been a lie, and that really, he is the son of King Eldar. The only son, that is, that has survived in human form. Dartanus always stood by King Eldar's side, but with the coming of Balcifer, Dartanus had a choice to make - either fight along side King Eldar, or protect his Queen and their new born son, Dar. Dartanus chose to protect Dar and his mother. Despite his efforts, King Eldar is fatally wounded, and with his last ounce of energy, turns his wife and other children into animals so that Balcifer would not know who/what they were in the hopes that they would be safe. Dartanus then knows that it's his duty to watch out for Dar, and when the time comes, informs him of what he must do: Find his family and return them to the Crystal Ark, a piece of magical stone that can hold the family safely inside until all can be found, at which point, they will be returned to their human forms. The third season is based around the search for his family, and the fight against Balcifer, whose power and greed are growing ever stronger.
Like I have said before, the plot is definitely the high point of the show. The actors are varied enough to make it believable that they all come from different parts of the world, and with multiple villains all making alliances with Balcifer, it does make for some nice plot twists. If you are a die-hard Sci-fi fan, than this series will be right up your alley, but if you are wanting something a bit more believable, I suggest you look elsewhere.
Where to buy.......2006-06-07
does anyone know where i would be able to buy the complete 3rd season of Beastmaster?
Animal Magnetism.......2003-12-12
The "Beastmaster" series is highly entertaining if you like such series as "Xena" and "Hercules". Dar (Daniel Goddard), the Beastmaster, is a warrior who has one adventure after another while on his quest to make things right in the world. His constant traveling companion is Tao (Jackson Raine) a man of logic and intelligence. Dar's secret weapon is his ability to communicate with all animals. Animals that offer their assistance to help Dar. Dar's strength and Tao's wisdom make for a true friendship and unbeatable combination against evil in the world.
Beastmaster rocks!.......2003-12-07
This action-packed dvd took me back to the days of Hercules and Xena on my tv. A funny asian man follows the Beastmaster around, and a barbaric black woman kills herself with a spear by launching it thirty feet in the air and....guess you'll have to buy the dvd!
Love it!
