Time-hoppers from the future, led by Cheryl Ladd, are abducting airline passengers about to crash, and transporting them a millennium hence in order to reseed a future blighted by environmental disaster. This is a dangerous business, plagued by the specter of accidentally creating time paradoxes, which could throw the future out of whack. Unfortunately, they've lost a couple of the stunners they use to subdue troublesome passengers, and these fall into the hands of a curious physicist (Daniel J. Travanti) and an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board (Kris Kristofferson). Cheryl Ladd must retrieve these devices before a time paradox wipes out her world, but manages to complicate things by developing a romance with Kristofferson. All of which is very intriguing, having come from the short story, "Air Raid," by science fiction luminary John Varley, who also is credited with the screenplay. The part about airline abductions to save the disastrous future is straight from the original story, and the rest is expanded (you wouldn't say extrapolated) from it. The results are not very happy. About a third of the film is maddeningly wasted by repeating action from a different point of view. Seems natural when there are disparate timelines to deal with, but here nothing is added by the conceit. Only Travanti turns in a creditable performance as the physicist, bent on proving his theories about the future. He seems hungry for discovery, which is one of the things you want from a science fiction story, that sense of awe. But here it's just, "Aw, shucks!" --Jim Gay

3 out of 5 stars It didnt suprise me.......2007-06-19

I was afraid to watch this one for a long time considering what i heard of it. The plot is simple, some writer lady goes to the country and ends up being raped and assaulted by 4 ignorant backwoods types then one when one of them dosent go through with the job of 'taking care of her' she comes back for revenge. It was sick, yes, It was you can say brutal in a way, but i can see something like this happening. I mean it didnt shock me considering ive actually met people like this that were maybe a couple inches away from doin something like that. Theres 2 types of people, normal good people and people that are a couple inches away from doing something sick like this. A bunch of guys gettin together, real ignorant types and then pullin something like this, yea, i can see it. The stupidity of one of them made me sick. He was like just doing whatever he was told. Then came 'the revenge'. Plain and simple, not much else. I cant say i could see someone really 'enjoying' watching this but i cant say it was so bad i wouldnt tell you not to see it. I dont think a normal person would have much interest in this one. People who love horror? maybe. Its a hit or miss.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Nastie!.......2007-05-02

"Spit" is one of my all time favourite little "nasties".
It's sick alright and still very disturbing, even though it was made way back in 1978. Ok, it's low, low budget, but that's why it works.
The film's lack of music throughout makes it all the more off putting.
Camille Keaton, as the victim, is an absolute trouper.
Rodney, is Gold.

This Millennium Edition of "Spit" is something my brother and I used to joke about. Ever since we first caught "Spit" at the Drive In on it's original release, the idea of a special edition of "Spit" was something we only ever dreamt of one day owning.
To have it like this, THX Certified Transfer, Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1, looking and sounding like it was made yesterday, with extras laid on, you've got to be kidding.
And that cover ain't half bad either....hey?

Warning:Definately not for the kiddies.

4 out of 5 stars NOT AS BAD AS WHAT EVERYONE SAYS !!!!!.......2007-03-30

I bought this movie because I was intrigued by it. The cinematography is incredible. Visually, it is stunning. The rape scenes ARE savage, but I was touched by the emotional devastation the actress was able to convey. As a woman I was rooting for the heroine and I must admit I was a little disappointed in the ease with which she dispatched three of her assailants. Her revenge on Matthew was "OK" but I would have liked to have seen a little blood and gore. When I first saw the bathtub scene between the heroine and Johnny I was a little nauseated by all the blood but I couldn't help but laugh at the way she dispatched him. I watched the movie again and I thought it would have been even more visually effective if after the slice and dice she would have raised her hand from out of the bath water holding a semblance of bloody genitalia in her hand. But this movie was made in a decade that never would have allowed that. The heroine's numb composure throughout the revenge sequences is fully understandable (that is, if you're a woman). Kudos to Ms. Keaton for a very persuasive acting job.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-03-14

Maybe the WORST movie ever made, or at least the worst that I have seen. Don't waste you're money or time.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-02-26

This movie is great. Artistic in a sick way. Sort of has a feminist flavor too it, but in a cool way. Definently a morality message underneath. also, Theres a classic scene that will traumatize any man who watches this film.

The groundbreaking show Millennium was about to take a new, visionary direction in its second season. Millennium could have continued its successful formula of introducing new, apocalyptic "Se7en-esque" serial killers for Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) to hunt down. But as any viewer can attest, it was the exploration of the mysterious "Millennium Group" and Frank Black's role that held the key to the show's potential longevity. And who better to build a mythos for the Millennium than the minds behind The X-Files: producer/writer team Glenn Morgan and James Wong. Stepping in when Chris Carter stepped aside, Morgan and Wong immediately began to focus season 2 not on the killers and their impact on Armageddon, but on Frank Black and his struggle for his personal stability and sanity. The Millennium Group, whose identify and function was never really explored in season 1, now becomes a central entity in season 2 complete with its own Masonic-like mythology.

Picking up where season 1 ends, Frank Black's stalker, the "Polaroid man," has kidnapped his wife, Catherine (Megan Gallagher). While searching for his wife, Frank begins to learn that the group has not exactly been open with him and their secrets run a lot deeper than he ever imagined. Building on this tragedy, season 2 follows Frank's downward spiral: his strained relationship with his wife, the loss of his sanctuary "the yellow house," his disenchantment and eventual confrontation with the Millennium Group, and his struggle to maintain a normal relationship with his daughter, Jordan (Brittany Tiplady), in the face of Armageddon. Season 1 was definitely dark and fantastic, but somehow maintained a strong sense of realism. With Morgan and Wong at the helm, season 2 further explores the dark and fantastical, but becomes a lot more surreal, but no less fascinating. So whether you are drawn to stories about dark serial killers ("The Mikado"), the ongoing tales of conspiracies ("The Hand of St. Sebastian," "Owls," and "Roosters"), familiar comedies ("José Chung's Doomsday Defense"), or the bizarre ("Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me"), season 2 has something for you. Tragically, there would only be one more season before one of the best shows of the '90s would be cancelled. --Rob Bracco

5 out of 5 stars Smart, intelligent series that is just great........2007-07-05

Millennium was a great series that had more thought than most of what is on TV today.

3 out of 5 stars Season 2 is not nearly as good as Season 1..........2007-06-27

Season 2 gets away from what made the 1st season great and that was the profiling of serial killers, rather it focuses more on the group and what was then the upcoming "millenium." There are no episodes, in my opinion, that are as good as the pilot episode or the "Powers, Dominions, Principalities, etc." episode which I give my highest rating. Still, Season 2 has its moments and is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling!.......2007-06-02

Milennium comes into its own in Season Two, finding its rhythm and developing its characters into people we really come to care about. Viewers learn a lot more about the inner workings of the Milennium Group, and also the Polariod Killer. This ground-breaking show may have been short-lived [only three seasons] but it truly made for compelling viewing with its gripping plots and complex characters!

3 out of 5 stars Series almost lost me but realed me back in.......2007-05-14

This series has a new creative team at the helm and it shows. The tone and story telling are lost and all that was built up in series 1 is squandered, luckily tehy last 5 or so episodes miraculously get the series back on track with solid story telling and characterisation that ends up being the best episodes so far.

5 out of 5 stars Never appreciated it before.......2007-05-12

A great show that I had never appropriately appreciated when it originally aired. The real standout ep here is "Somehow Satan Got Behind Me." Funny, moving, profound.

Millennium marked the second major television series created by Chris Carter, who'd already made his name as the brains behind The X-Files. And, like its predecessor, it shares a lot of the same themes--it's a crime thriller that gradually unfolds into a grand conspiracy involving the government and the fate of the entire world.

Agent Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) is a former FBI agent who has transplanted his family from Washington, D.C. to Seattle, after suffering something of a breakdown. He's an expert criminal profiler--arguably the best, thanks to his ability to "see" into the minds of killers--and he fears for the safety of his wife and young daughter. In Seattle, he joins the mysterious Millennium Group, an agency of freelance crime-busters who investigate particularly brutal crimes. As a result, Millennium is downright bleak viewing, as Black jumps from horrific slaying to horrific slaying. Moreover, there's a growing sense of unease about the workings of the Millennium Group, so that in typical Chris Carter fashion, you don't know who to trust. With its pre-Y2K angst and overwhelming darkness, as well as its general humorlessness, Millennium hasn't dated as well as The X-Files. Still, thanks to Carter's vision and Henriksen's compelling take on the tortured Black, it's difficult not to get hooked. --Ted Kord

Description

Retired serial-profiler Frank Black has moved his family to Seattle to escape the violence and horror he dealt with while working for the FBI in Washington, D.C. Although his uncanny and often unsettling ability to see into the twisted minds of serial killers has caused him much inner torment, Black knows his "gift" can still be used to help protect and save others. For that reason he has joined the mysterious Millennium Group, a team of underground ex-law enforcement experts dedicated to fighting against the ever-growing forces of evil and darkness in the world.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5. Twisted stuff, but I like it.......2007-06-14

I remember watching the "Millennium" premiere way back in `96. I would've had to have been twelve at the time, and though I'd watched "The X-Files" from the very beginning and had long had a predilection for horror-oriented entertainment, "Millennium" proved a bit much. The pilot. . .disturbed me. As did the next episode. And the next, and pretty much every episode I watched of it at the time. Nothin' but serial killers, so it seemed, and the lead was apparently dead as well. It was all just too damned depressing, and I watched it less and less over time. Nevertheless, it did make a strong impression on me, and I never forgot it. Still, I didn't think about "Millennium" too much for many years, but with the recent DVD revolution, nothing is going to be forgotten or unavailable for very long, and I recently got through my long-overdue viewing of the first season. I must say, I'm quite impressed. At nearly twice my prior age, it doesn't even have a shadow of the original impact, but "Millennium" is still an impressively dark, gruesome TV show, particularly in its first season. And, more to the point, it's just flat-out good.

"Millennium" focuses on one Frank Black and his family as they move to a new home in Seattle. Frank is a former profiler for the FBI, and this move represents a new beginning for him, his wife Catherine and their young daughter Jordan. They live in a cute little yellow, suburban house in a picturesque neighborhood with friendly neighbors seemingly transplanted from a `50s sitcom. Still, as a killer-hunter, Frank is intuitively in tune with the darker side of life, and he can't escape it. He hasn't really abandoned his old occupation anyway, and he now works as a consultant with the Millennium group which basically amounts to continuing work as a serial killer profiler, but with a, well, millennial bent. They think that the increase in violent, disturbing crime a symptom of the impending apocalypse, though we don't hear too much more about this during this season. As it turns out, these elements work best when they're just under the surface, adding a subtle, binding element to the season as a whole.

It's difficult to define just what makes "Millennium" so effective and so different from most everything else on TV. It's not one thing, but rather just the overall milieu of the show, an accumulation of a thousand different details. "Millennium" is an admitted "Seven" cash-in, and it generates the bleak tone in much the same way, with darkened corridors and endless rain, with biblical and general religious themes, both overt and covert, with a contrast between an idealized, middle class life and the degeneracy of the world as a whole etc. This final contrast is an aspect which I particularly enjoy. For whatever reason, the ideas of both utter purity and total depravity particularly intrigue. Perhaps we don't have much of either in day to day life, at least not in suburban, middle-class American life, but that just makes it all the more interesting I guess. Still, when it comes to looking at light vs. dark, "Millennium" is much more intimate with the dark. While it's not shocking the way it once was, "Millennium" still proves to be easily the darkest show I've ever seen on network television or non-premium cable. Though we don't get to see most of it it in much detail, we've got plenty of bad stuff: eyes and mouths are shown shut while the victims are still alive; families are slaughtered while the children are forced to watch; clergyman are burned and tortured alive; teens forced to drink the blood of others; organs are stolen from still-conscious victims etc. And that's just a small taste of the unremitting grisliness of the show.

Lance Henriksen's performance as Frank Black is the key to "Millennium". Henriksen doesn't seem to have a whole lot of range, but what he does he does well, and this show contains some of the best work I've seen of his. He has to walk a thin line, since Frank is a quiet, largely humorless and cold figure, but Henriksen still imbues him with a certain amount of life, and never makes him seem bored or indifferent. He isn't dull, but intense and thoughtful Megan Gallagher is Frank's wife Catherine, and she's not as good, though still adequate. Her relative weakness is probably more a fault of how her character was written than how she was performed, but it's a concern either way. She's just a bit of a drag and a worry wort, frankly. I'm not sure what Frank sees in her, honestly, though it may have something to do with her being 20 years younger than him. (Way to go Frank! Put those psychic profiling powers to good use!) Still, even if I don't especially care about her as a character, I buy that Frank does, and that's good enough. The other recurring characters are mostly cops, of sorts, and most of them don't make too strong of an impression other than Terry O'Quinn as Peter Watts, Frank's major contact in the Millennium group. He's not as prominent this season as he'd become, but he O'Quinn still gives nuanced, sympathetic performances which adds a bit more life to the show.

Truth be told, I have a hard time coming up with specific standout episodes. They are all pretty similar, for the most part. And no, not every episode deals with a crazed killer of some sort, but most of them do. The "Pilot" is still particularly effective, with plenty of nasty ideas, though it is perhaps a bit too obviously derivative of "Seven", even as this show goes. I also especially like "The Wild and the Innocent", one of the more unique, episodes, involving a young couples murderous trek across the south in search of their stolen child, and "Lamentation", an episode which initially looks like a typical "Silence of the Lambs" knockoff, but which moves in unexpected directions and helps bolster the supernatural angle of the show which steadily comes into greater play as the season progresses. On the plus side, part of the reason why there aren't many particular standouts in my book is because there are no obvious dud episodes either.

On the downside, "Millennium" doesn't maintain this quality forever. Season 2 sees Carter cease to be much involved, and the show moves in a less bleak, more conventionally "X-Files"-esque direction with some rather bizarre plot developments. It's far from bad, and perhaps this formula would wear thin after a while, but season 2 is still not as good as the first. Still, this is what we've got, and it's more than good enough. Hell, it's pretty surprising that they were able to keep it this unrelenting morbid for as long as they did, so we should consider ourselves lucky to have this much. Anyway, it you're a fan of pitch-black, horror themed entertainment, you'd be pretty damn stupid not to check out "Millennium"

5 out of 5 stars One of the best in its genre!.......2007-06-02

Having been a longtime fan of the ground-breaking series The X-Files, it was only natural that I watched another of Chris Carter's shows, Milennium. The show centers around Frank Black [played consummately by Lance Henricksen, who had supporting roles in movies like Aliens]a former FBI agent who leaves the bureau to spend more time with his young family, comprising his wife Catherine [Megan Gallagher] and his young daughter Jordan [Brittany Tiplady]. They move to Seattle but a peaceful existence is made difficult by Frank's talents in solving serious crimes, often involving serial killers and even otherworldly phenomena. He finds himself drawn into helping the secretive Millenium group, comprising former officers and federal agents. Terry O'Quinn plays Peter Watts, Frank's main link to the group. The show is really dark and each episode provides viewers a glimpse into the dark recesses of the human soul, and brings the fight between the forces of good and evil to play...the season ends with Frank's wife being kidnapped by a guy who had been stalking Frank's family but whose identity remains unknown. It is a truly gripping series!

3 out of 5 stars Too heavy.......2007-05-17

Well, the movie indeed made me feel but feel sick. Don't take me wrong - this is a very good piece of work, great acting, music, atmosphere but it's just too heavy for my taste. Well maybe I shouldn't have watched it every night... If CSI and other standard criminal series are too light-hearted for you and you crave for gore not only physical but deeply psychological this one will be just it. For me there's too much suffering and problems in the real world to watch this series as "entertainment". It's just too real and horrifying.

3 out of 5 stars Good beginning..........2007-05-14

Good beginning series. It sets the tone (very dark) early and sets up teh characters well. Unfortrunatley the series just meanders mostly through unconnected episodes for far too long and only comes back on track right at the end.

3 out of 5 stars Good Partner to the X-files.......2007-05-09

I never watched a single episode of Millennium while it was on TV but recently finished my collection of The X-Files and was looking for more Chris Carter, so I picked up the 1st season of Millennium. It did not blow me away at first, but I was certainly intrigued. As I watched I found that I did enjoy this series, though not quite as much as the X-Files. The reason for the 3-star rating is mainly because while I enjoy the one-off, serial killer of the week, format, I am a big fan of mythology arcs. If this season had focused a bit more on mythology it would have earned another star. That said, the few episodes that were hinting at an underlying, connected story we among my favorites, and the episodes leading up to the finale were quite good. I have season 2 ready to go and am excited to check it out, espeically since I have heard that it is more focused on the mythology of the Millennium Group. If you like Chris Carter or the X-Files, give this show a shot.

In the third season of Millennium, we find Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) a widower and a single father who is completely disillusioned with the Millennium group and their evil intentions. Hell-bent on revenge, Frank rejoins the FBI, gets a new partner, Special Agent Emma Hollis (Klea Scott), and launches a personal crusade to dismantle and expose the Millennium Group. Interestingly, the visionary, quirky, X-Files mythos-like direction in which the producer-writer team of Glenn Morgan and James Wong took Millennium in season 2 didn't sit well with many fans. Now that a good chunk of the Earth's population had been wiped out by the Group's killer plague, which also claimed Frank's wife Catherine (Megan Gallagher), Chris Carter decided to take the helm once again and redirect season 3 back to the dark, apocalyptic crime-fighting genre in which it was intended. The mythos element is still present, but season 3 is a definite return to the look and feel of season 1 where most of the episodes are individual dark crime stories. The scripts in season 3 are consistently sharp (especially Ken Horton's and Chip Johannessen's), and the interesting, new dynamics introduced could have easily carried the show onward for many more seasons. Sadly, it was never meant to be. Like an apocalyptic metaphor, one of the best-written, best-produced, and most-influential shows of the 1990s would be canceled at the end of season 3, less than one year before the year 2000. Fans were left to wonder about the future of Frank Black, Jordan, and the success of his personal vendetta. Fortunately, The X-Files was still going strong at the time and fans got a bit of closure with The X-Files' season 7 tie-in episode "Millennium" (included on this DVD set). --Rob Bracco

Description

From X-Files Producer Chris Carter comes the final chapter of Millennium. With his unique ability to see into the minds of killers, profiler Frank Black left the FBI to join the Millennium Group, a covert team of ex-law enforcement experts battling the growing forces of evil in the world—or so he thought. For when a deadly viral outbreak swept across the country infecting thousands of people and killing his wife, Frank discovered it was all part of a secret plot engineered by the Group. Now, disillusioned and outraged, Frank returns to the FBI determined to expose the Millennium Group. But protecting his job and his daughter, who Frank fears shares his gift, is no easy task when there are group members who believe that if he is not on their side, there is no reason he should be allowed to keep using his gift against them.

Creative team changes again and now the series is a mix of teh 2 previous series plus an xfiles kind of flavour. Luckily it all works really well and this is a terrific series.

We LOVED this series when it was on TV and missed it when it ended. Hubby had this on his birthday/Christmas list for ages and we finally got all three seasons.

Season three had a ton of big changes and first few episodes had to rebuild the Millennium universe but it pulled it together and grew into something new and exciting. Wish they would have given it a few more years.

4 out of 5 stars Back to the basics.......2007-02-08

After watching the complete second season, I had to wonder whether Millenium Season 3 would resemble anything about the outstanding first season. Namely, a huge plague seemed to be wiping out all of humanity, that kind of puts a low emphasis on the importance of catching serial-killers.

As it turns out, things do go back to normal. The viral outbreak gets severly downplayed, merely a few characters don't come back. However, it's now Frank Black working for the FBI and the Millenium Group lurking about in the shadows. Makes for good conflict. The new star Klea Scott is a likeable charater; the Scully to Frank Black's Mulder. The pair also do a great job with the commentary for a few of the episodes.

The set is well worth the purchase even if you're worried about the turn the series took after season 2. I can say with confidence that things pick up and it becomes more like season 1. Just don't expect the final season to answer many questions. The show was cancelled right before the end of the world stuff goes down. However, they included the X-Files Episode: Millenium as a special feature, so you do get to see Frank Black battle zombies, thus giving a bizzare sense of closure on the whole story.

3 out of 5 stars The last but not the best season of a great show.......2007-02-06

I have said in my brief review of season two that it was the best season of the show. Well, season 3 is the worst. I personally believe that the show was too avant guarde, too ahead of its time and the writers of season 3 tried to "tone it down" for ratings. Unfortunately, what is left is a mediocre season that deviated from the apocalyptic vision of season's one and two.

The second film by director Satoshi Kon and screenwriter Sadayuki Murai recalls Perfect Blue, but Millennium Actress is a more complex, subtle, and sophisticated work that evokes the history of Japanese cinema. After nearly 30 years of living in strict seclusion, the aged film star Chioyoko Fujiwara grants an interview to journalist Genya Tachibana. As their conversation begins, Kan intercuts scenes from Chioyoko's films with her memories of pursuing the mysterious artist she met as a young girl. Accompanied by his blasé cameraman, Tashibana finds himself within Chioyoko's memories and films, alternately observing and aiding the woman he adores. Kon's skillful direction and subtle use of color strengthen the intriguing story: Chioyoko's memories are rendered in shades of gray, with hints of muted color highlighting the overall composition. American viewers will find their appreciation of this shimmering, spiral narrative deepens with repeated viewings. (Rated PG: violence, mature themes) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Good intro to anime.......2007-06-02

If you are an anime fan, you will enjoy this movie, but may find it unremarkable. If you have never seen anime, or you have not found anime that you liked, this would be an excellent point of entry into the finer side.

Creative and often downright stunning in its imagery, the movie opts to take a meta-meta-meta-drama approach. Okay, I just put in an arbitrary number of "metas" but the point is that the plots of different movies are constantly being woven and blended into the flashback sequence that covers the main story. You'll realize that, yes, it's partly surreal, but at the same time it is not too difficult to pick up on "what really happened."

What it all comes down to is that it's hard to say why, but this is one of those profoundly Japanese animated films that really plays to the strengths of the medium while avoiding all the pitfalls that can turn off Westerners.

5 out of 5 stars All the lives of Chiyoko-san.......2007-04-05

This is a very touching movie and an elaborate journey through time. We don't really get to see Chiyoko's inner character that much, but we still end up liking her. The ending is sad, but fits perfectly with the rest of the story. The only problem is that anime newbies might have a problem with the complicated story. But one good thing about anime is that some of it makes you really think. This is one of those anime. I usually rate Hayao Miyazaki's movies high on my favorites list, but this is up there too with the rest of them. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Satoshi Kon's first animated masterpiece.......2007-02-03

One of my big resolutions for 2007 is to travel through time more. But when I rented "Millenium Actress", I had no idea that that was what I would be doing. I merely knew that I was renting a film by Satoshi Kon, and that although his first opus, "Perfect Blue", had left me rather cold, I consider his "Tokyo Godfathers" one of the best animated movies I have ever seen.

But travel through time I did. "Millenium Actress" is a biographical film about a fictitious but incredibly attractive Japanese movie star (even at 60!), who gets to be interviewed by a life-long admirer turned journalist. As the audience discovers, her life simply summarizes one century of Japanese cinema (from silents to "Godzilla"), and her movies themselves, a thousand years of Japanese history (hence the title.)

"Millenium Actress" is a film that wraps the viewer into its perfectly imagined little world from the very first image and never lets him go. In fact, I was so immediately entranced by it that I realized I wanted it to end rapidly, afraid as I was that it might fail to fulfil its promise, and utimately lose momentum. But this obvious labour of love (from all parties involved) does manage to sustain to the end that unique combination of sweet and sour nostalgia, hopeless but ever hopeful romanticism, deliberately clicheed melodrama and occasionally overblown humour.

My only regret is renting the film rather than buying it with my eyes closed. I will not make the same mistake when Paprika is released on DVD.

1 out of 5 stars not worth the time.......2006-12-12

Although the animation is good, this movie had the most disappointing ending! After the reviews I read on amazon I was expecting a powerful response, but the ending was unclear and hypocritical of the entire plot. Don't waste your time with this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Metaphoric and Artsy.......2006-11-03

An intricate puzzle, this film reminded me of artsy films that win Emmy awards (that also bore me to death).

I found the first thirty minutes confusing and slow. I had a hard time distinguishing life-flashbacks and older movie sequences. The woodgrains in the background added subtle overtones into the emotional mixtures, but I noticed them because the story totally dragged.

According to the extras, Kon's intended the movie as a story stereogram. A stereogram is an object that resembles different objects depending on your mindset and interpretation. My opinion is the director went too far, adding non-linear elements to a point where the story itself became unclear.

If you are a sophisticated cinema lover, you'll enjoy this movie immensely. If you wanted to watch an entertaining anime after a mentally taxing day at work, look elsewhere. The mystery never wrenched me because it could also be a bedtime story. The suspense never scared me because it could also be romance. The adventure never thrilled me because it was always a flashback. My problem with the stereogrammatic approach was the opacity took away purity.

Overall I felt unmoved at the end. Reminded me of completing a crossword in the newspaper -- slight satisfaction for comprehending a self-appointed puzzle. I could appreciate the methaphors, animation sequences, and visuals, but not the story.

Amazon.com essential video

We can hardly imagine how shocking this film was when it first broke into the film scene in 1968. There's never been anything quite like it again, though there have been numerous pale imitations. Part of the terror lies in the fact that it is shot in such a raw and unadorned fashion that it feels like a home movie, and is all the more authentic because of that. It draws us into its world gradually, content to establish a merely spooky atmosphere before leading us through a horrifically logical progression that we hardly could have anticipated. The story is simple: Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk, and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse who are trying to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead. The tension between the members of this unstable, makeshift community drives the film. Night of the Living Dead establishes savagery as a necessary condition of life. Marked by fatality and a grim humor, the film gnaws through to the bone, then proceeds on to the marrow. --Jim Gay

Amazon.com essential video

George Romero's classic 1968 zombie-fest (shot in black and white) offers some disturbing images, even decades later. In a Pittsburgh suburb people are being stalked by zombies ravenous for human flesh. In a house whose occupant has already been slain, two separate groups of people unite and board themselves in, hoping to fend off the advancing ghouls. Through radio and TV reports they learn that radiation from outer space is thought to be responsible for the wave of zombie attacks all over the eastern United States. Once the humans are trapped, Romero shifts the focus to the internal feuding between them as they decide how to handle their dreadful situation. What unfolds is an examination of human nature, and of the fear and selfishness that keep many citizens from getting involved in the world's problems. Appropriately, both the zombies and the authorities who later hunt them are equally soulless. This film could also be read as a criticism of white males--it is not merely a coincidence that the film's two most rational, constructive characters are a woman and a black man. It is also no coincidence that the sequel takes place in a mall infested by the undead--a perfect analogy for consumer culture. --Bryan Reeseman

5 out of 5 stars Night of the Living Dead.......2007-07-02

he first and best of George Romero's zombie series, a horror classic made on a low five figure budget way back in 1968. Some of the acting is less than stellar, but this hardly affects the tightening knot in your stomach. More restrained than later outings, the zombies are less turbo-charged, which only increases the prevailing sense of dread. Film builds to a nifty surprise finish. Consistently creepy, punctuated by moments of unbridled terror. Be warned!

5 out of 5 stars Zombie Pioneer.......2007-06-10

Ironically, I decided on seeing "Night of the Living Dead" after reading The Undead and Philosophy: Chicken Soup for the Soulless (Popular Culture and Philosophy), (I am sure the authors did not have that response in mind). Anyway, after much reference to Romero's movies, I decided I had had a deprived existence for not having seen them.

Shot in black and white, Romero casts a dark and dank mood over the movie, making it all the more creepy. With the addition of some serious gore, (for 1968, that is), and some excellent photography, the movie starts the tension early and keeps it going right to the end. While the explanations for the zombie phenomenon are never really fleshed out, (no pun intended), the radiation from a space probe seems to be the one offered. The main characters are holed up in an isolated farm house, and each has distinctly different responses to their situation. Ironically, the very thing they fear seems to come to pass.

Some of the sound effects seem decidedly "cheesy", such as the "blood" dripping from the stairs onto the floor. However, this is more than compensated for by the overall tension and darkness of the movie. This would have to be one of the creepiest movies I have seen.

I have not seen later editions, so this review refers to the original 1968 release. It is an excellent movie that spawned a whole sub-genre of horror movies. It is simply a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Almost every zombie film uses some unholy marriage between repulsion and humor. This one simply uses good old fashioned horror.......2007-06-08

The Colorized DVD of Night of the Living Dead is something to treasure (and is required viewing every Halloween). The thing that I really liked about it was that it also contains the black and white version if color is not your taste. It also contains audio commentary and trailers. The first thing we see before you press "play movie" is an eerie image of Barbara's face and a full moon with creepy music which sets the mood perfectly.

Being chased and cornered by undead humans who want to eat warm flesh had never been envisioned before this movie was envisioned. While many good zombie movies have been made since its release, none has surpassed Night of the Living Dead's eerie atmosphere. Virtually all zombie films try to make some unholy marriage between horror, comedy, and gore (like Dead Alive and Return of the Living Dead). Some even try to throw romance into the mix. Night of the Living Dead, with its simplistic nature, just goes for scary and, because of that, it's still the best zombie movie ever made. Roger Ebert, in his review of this movie, said that it was so scary when it was released that children were crying in the audience he was in. And it's effective even today (especially the last 10-15 minutes).

Indulge yourself and get the zombie flick that started it all.

5 out of 5 stars The only version of "Night..." that you should own... DO NOT BUY THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY ED.!!.......2007-05-17

I am a purist and like the grainy quality of this movie on the video taped version that I have. However, if you are going to buy a version of night for the DVD era, this is the MUST BUY edition.

Before I continue, let me say DO NOT BUY THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION! It is only interesting in its novelty, but is a disgraceful re-writing of the original masterpiece.

Make no mistake, "Night of the Living Dead" is a masterpiece, a brilliant selection of moments, camera angles, and black and white horror that still resonates to this day. The protagonist is strong, and the antagonist is a perfect foil.

The ending is the greatest movie ending I have ever seen in my 31 years. It shocked me to the core. "Seven" is a distant second when it comes to rattling endings.

The extras are fantastic, with many of the original cast members coming to provide commentary. It is excellent.

No one can call themselves a fan of the zombie genre without owning or at least watching this movie.

Millennium - The Complete First Season

Millennium - The Complete Second Season

Millennium - The Complete Third Season

5 out of 5 stars Millennium.......2007-01-18

The series is one of the best and most thought provoking American television has ever put out.

The characterization is first rate and the situations are gritty. It is not an easy show to watch, but once you start it, Lance Henriksen and crew take you on a rollercoaster ride with their humanity out there for all to see in the face of some of the worst situations ever put on film.

I loved this show.

5 out of 5 stars Great Serie!.......2007-01-16

The packaging its very good and the serie its Great!.

This is a very very good product.

4 out of 5 stars two great seasons, one mediocre season = pretty good.......2006-11-01

Season One of "Millennium" has got to rank as the most grim season of any television series ever broadcast on network TV. There is an air of misery, despair, and doom that hangs over every episode. Other shows have gone further in terms of gore -- "CSI" leaps immediately to mind -- but none of them have gone as far in terms of tone. For a lot of people, that makes this first season hard to watch, but if you're game for it, then I think it's probably Chris Carter's finest single season on any of his shows. A dark, brooding masterpiece.

Season two still bears Carter's name, but he was busy working on the "X-Files" movie, and consequently left Glen Morgan and James Wong in charge of "Millennium" this particular year. Some fans see the second season as a too-abrupt change of pace from season one, and indeed there is a palpable difference in both content and tone. The show is still dark, but the plot opens up to become a bit more of a standard "X-Files"-like conspiracy show, with the Millennium Group put a bit more front and center. To me, this seems like a natural outgrowth of the first season, so no complaints. And about half season two's episodes are not just good, they're GREAT -- this season is HIGHLY recommended.

Unfortunately, season three is a colossal disappointment. Without giving anything away, let's say that season two ended on, well, a BIT of a cliffhanger, and one that seemed as if it was pushing the series in a very specific direction. The beginning of season three almost totally ignores that intended direction, and if you're one of the people who feel that season two went against the grain of the first season, well, maybe that's a good thing. For everyone else, it just feels like a huge cheat. Again, I don't want to say too much, lest I spoil parts of the plot for newcomers; but suffice it to say that I just DO NOT accept the direction the third season took. It definitely doesn't match with season two, but I personally don't think it matches with season one, either. It's not a complete waste of time, as the production values remained high, Lance Henriksen remained awesome as Frank, and several individual episodes managed to be good ones. But there are also a few that are laughably bad, and all in all, it's just not good.

Still, the first two seasons are absolutely terrific, so this set as a whole is definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Incandescent intensity- Frank Black's insight illuminates...........2006-07-30

a dark and complicated world.... Savor this richly textured, multi-layered walk through the valley of good and evil.... Dead-on casting, brilliant writing, and thoughtful treatment of enduring archetypal themes. Kudos to Chris Carter for launching this series, to Glen Morgan and James Wong for their brave, engaging, and visionary story arc in Season Two, to Thomas J. Wright for his talented direction, and to Mark Snow for his memorable musical soundscapes. Ranks right up there with X-Files, The Prisoner, Twin Peaks, and more for engaging, visionary, and thought-provoking creativity....

Stuart Gordon's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Herbert West: Re-Animator puts a Night of the Living Dead spin on the classic Frankenstein story. Jeffrey Combs furrows his brow and bugs his eyes as the preternaturally intense Herbert West, a maverick medical student whose gory, gooey experiments cause bloody corpses and body parts to jerk to life. Bruce Abbot is the studious roommate drawn into his extracurricular experiments, which soon involve the dean's daughter (the frequently naked Barbara Crampton) and the college's cadaverous, calculating star professor (David Gale), who literally loses his head over a battle for West's discovery. In this world, that's only a minor setback. Charged with sick gallows humor and a ghoulish gallery of undead beasties, Re-Animator, like Evil Dead II, is one of the most inspired and inventive--and funniest--horror films of the 1980s. Combs, Abbot, and Gale reunite for the almost-as-entertaining sequel Bride of Re-Animator. --Sean Axmaker

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......2007-06-19

This student guy is kicked out of his university. Then he goes to another university and he starts workin in the morgue and moves in with another student and his girlfriend and he starts doin experiments with the cat. He think he found some kind of formula for the re animation of corpses. The cat comes back to life and he tries to convince his roomate that the formula really works.. even on humans. So they try it with humans in the lab and it works. It was really funny, much more funny than scary, like the cat they bring back to life looks like a stuffed animal and the dad in the straight jacket. It was pretty good. This DVD comes with a little needle with that potion stuff in it.

4 out of 5 stars green glowing goo.......2007-06-01

Smart, funny, gory and sleazy. Love it! A hilarious modern classic that knows what it is and does what it's meant to do. It's filled with ambitious effects, clever visual gags and well-thought-out characters who also happen to be complete and utter nutballs in the most interesting of ways.

Points for one of the most over-the-top, hilarious, naughtiest scenes I've ever seen in a horror movie, even quite a few of the more recent ones. The '80s sure were raunchy!

I was also thrilled with the green syringe highlighter that came with it, although it looks kind of odd if you take it out of the box--leaves a big white gap behind the cellophane window. Minor issue, though. It's a cool set and a nice tribute to a fun movie.

5 out of 5 stars Re-Animator: Special Edition.......2007-05-16

The latest release of "Re-animator" does actually contain elements of previous releases, stemming back to its initial laser-disc, extra-laden presentation in the 1990s.

What is fetching in this latest release is a very comprehensive documentary, which subtly conveys Stuart Gordon's expertise as a director. Additionally, the transfer looks grander (and gorier) than ever before, and the unqiue packaging should be enticing to any horror-movie collector.

Indeed, if one has never purchased "Re-animator" before on DVD (or VHS/Laser Disc), this edition will prove quite mind-blowing. For those who have purchased the movie before (or who have simply viewed it many times over in the past), there is still enough new fringe offerings to make this entry a glorious catch, especially if one can obtain the highlighter/syringe collectible as part of the packaging.

"Re-animator" is an indisputable classic, and this particular special-edition is the ultimate to possess to date.
