Filmmakers apparently count on the fact that generational turnover renders old formulas fresh again for new audiences. Which is the only explanation for this sci-fi thriller, which could kindly be called an homage to Ridley Scott's trendsetting Alien. A medical rescue ship responds to a distress call from a mining colony and finds only one survivor: a strange young man (Peter Facinelli), who comes aboard carrying an even stranger alien artifact. But the plot of this film, which was directed and then disowned by Walter Hill, grows confused as it tries to explain the sinister force that will lead to a star going to supernova status, causing a universe-shattering explosion. Some nice sexual tension between James Spader (as a recovering drug addict who is the ship's copilot) and Angela Bassett (as the ship's doctor). Notable mostly, however, for the eerie resemblance, both physical and vocal, between Facinelli and Tom Cruise. --Marshall Fine

This kid-friendly disc serves as an advance for the DVD release of Disney's Treasure Planet feature, while emphasizing the story's roots in the written word. The main attraction is the movie's story, which can be read aloud in five different languages while viewers watch successive, still images from the original animated film. Sound strange? Sure, but the process is engrossing for children--a natural audience for storytelling. Also on board is a multilingual vocabulary experience, in which you can hear words associated with Treasure Planet's story (e.g., "chest") in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Two songs from the film, written and performed by Goo Goo Dolls icon John Rzeznik, also get the image-by-image treatment, though the disc also includes a powerful, ghostly celestial music video for Rzeznik's "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)." There's also a game compatible with Playstation 2 (and other gaming consoles with DVD drive). --Tom Keogh

Description

From the directors of Disney's ALADDIN and THE LITTLE MERMAID comes a spectacular new motion picture for the entire family. Buckle up for thrills and excitement as a classic story of friendship, courage, and self-discovery gets an incredible futuristic twist for an all-new generation. It's "another jewel in the crown of Disney animated classics" (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood). A secret map inspires a thrilling treasure hunt across the universe as young Jim Hawkins and a hilarious cosmic crew headed by the daring Captain Amelia set off in search of their destiny. Aboard a glittering space galleon, Jim meets the ship's cyborg cook, John Silver, who teaches him the value of friendship and the power of dreams. Jim soon teams up with his crazy new robot pal, B.E.N., and the shape-shifting Morph to discover a treasure greater than he ever imagined. Featuring an all-star voice cast including Emma Thompson, Martin Short, David Hyde Pierce, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Brian Murray, and Michael Wincott -- TREASURE PLANET is "a magical, inventive, and utterly delightful movie" (Paul Clinton, CNN).

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT IDEA!!!.......2007-06-30

For Disney to make a movie like this. This is a very imaginative movie that stretches your mind to the limits of animation in a very "science fiction" sort of way. I do enjoy Disney movies because they are very orginal in their stories and characters and every movie is very unique. I do think that this one will be a classic before long for both young and old. I highly recommend this one to anyone that loves Disney movies!!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Disney movie.......2007-06-12

I don't know what it is that pulled me into this movie. I think it's the futuristic setting along with Jim. I really like his character and I like Silver's too. Everyone keeps saying that it's more of a "teenager movie" instead of a kid movie. The thing is, kids are going to grow up and I think that this would be a great movie for them to watch to help them to follow their dreams. Anyway, that's just my outlook on it. Overall, I just really love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars totally underrated movie .......2007-05-05

Treasure Planet is by far one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. I'm so shocked it gets such bad reviews!

It's a classic story of adventure and coming-of-age, adapted from the novel "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. No, it is not a direct interpretation! But that's ok. The characters and the story are adapted from the novel to fit with the culture and imagination of today's world, and given a magical twist, as if 1800s England had special sci-fi technology.

In this version, Jim is a boy of fifteen whose father-angst has left him committing crimes and having trouble at home and at school, much to the pain of his young mother, Sarah. A chance meeting with old Billy Bones, former cabin-boy to the dreaded pirate Captain Flint, ends with him being given the map and key to Treasure Planet, a fabled place that contains the Loot of a Thousand Worlds, taken by Flint. This begins Jim's chance to set out on his own and learn about the world and who he is, and what potential he has.

The relationship between Silver and Jim is similar, but not exactly the same. It becomes a deep father/son relationship, with Jim finding in Silver what he always wanted from his deadbeat father. Silver is enigmatic, double-faced, and powerful, but grows a deep, unexpected soft spot for Jim that changes his mind about the treasure he's always sought.

Overall, I think the movie is fantastic. The animation is buttery smooth and is visually stunning, the characters are unique and interesting and all have a history long before the story takes place, and the adaptation from the original novel is very clever and updates the story well. The music, done by James Newton Howard and Johnny Rzeznik, is absolutely gorgeous, with a touch of Celtic influence added to the powerful orchestrations and themes. The story is heartwarming and powerful.

4 out of 5 stars Argghhhhh.......2007-04-11

What a wonderful twist on the classic Treasure Island. Silver is a cyborg and young Jim is a typical teen looking to find his place. Morph is a wonderful addition and will grab you and pull you into the adventure and fun.

As a primer on up-to-date scientific theory about the nature of the universe and our place in it, Cosmic Voyage is visually sumptuous and just plain fun. Shot in the mind-blowing IMAX process, this combined live-action and computer-generated production has (even in video format) an immensity of scope befitting its grand subject. Beginning, lyrically if unexpectedly, in Italy's magnificent Venice, Cosmic Voyage draws inspiration from airborne perspectives on the city's famed network of canals and streets, leading to further appreciations of dense systems in nature. From the subnuclear to the physical limits of the known universe, Cosmic Voyage explores a resonance between all things while making sense of such inscrutable phenomena as the birth of stars and planets, black holes, supernovas, etc. The marvels of cosmology are rarely so accessible as this. --Tom Keogh

Description

Cosmic Voyage mixes ground-breaking computer animation with cutting edge science to give us a sweeping view of the universe. A "cosmic zoom" extends from the surface of the Earth to the largest observable structures of the universe, and then back down to the sub-nuclear realm - a guided tour across some 42 orders of magnitude. Cosmic Voyage explores some of the greatest scientific theories, many of which have never before been visualized on film.

A must see film. The content is great, the images are great, Morgan Freeman's narration is great!!!! It's one great experience!!!!
I ABSOLUTELY recommend it to EVERYBODY, and especially to those that are curious about our universe, from the tiny particle to the great galaxy, and the progress of our means to understand it, science.

It's a amazing and Beautifull mode for a scientific presentation. Specially recommended to children and kids, and adults too.

5 out of 5 stars Not too detailed but accomplishes (fantastically) it primary goal..........2006-07-12

and that is to whet the viewer's interest reminiscent of more detailed mini-series like Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" and Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Origins." The series is concise and, very early, provides an excellent point of reference (literally) for those without any background regarding the universal and atomic scale.

Morgan Freeman comes through, as always, with his narration in a manner that provides an even and well paced presentation of the macro- and microscopic world. And while he doesn't have the trance-inducing voice of James Earl Jones, he skillfully manages to hold your attention even between the segments of the program that are nothing but spellbinding, which brings me to another point.

The images and computer generated sequences are done very well with especial care taken to faithfully represent the true scale and detail of the cosmos. The music fits well and affords a nice emotional complement to the eye candy. I'm sure many will agree with me that the best part of the entire program is the ultra quick zoom-in from the superclusters (largest scale of video) to the quarks comprising the neutrons and protons of the atom (smallest scale). My only complaint concerning the zoom-in (and the whole video for that matter) is that the camera seems to "back up" during the zooming. This takes place (33min.5sec. into program) when the camera comes upon a tree, into its leaves, into a leaf's veins, AND SUDDENLY!!, you're coming upon a creek with reeds, into the reeds, into a drop of water on the reed etc... An obvious editing mistake.

The mistake notwithstanding, this is an excellent video that quickly, though not rushing-ly, engages its audience---not with the intention to explicity educate on all the details so much as to introduce the viewer (in a very effective way!!) to what big and small really are.

No pretenses. It is what it says it is. A Cosmic Voyage.

2 out of 5 stars This movie didn't quite make it, I'd recommand something else..........2006-01-22

This movie does give viewers a general idea of the universe, in a very conservative sense. It only contains material and topics based on traditional big bang theory. Personally, I disagree with alot of ideas presented in the movie. I think since this movie is relatively new (2002) and not created back in the 70's or 80's, it should atleast contain new discoverys and new theories such as Super String Theory. Therefore, I do not recommand this movie if you are seeking to learn new knowledge, as far as I can tell, the movie is based on stuff we knew back in the 80's. However, I would definitely recommand the following: (1)The Elegant Universe (by NOVA,PBS) and (2)Origins (by NOVA,PBS) Both are very very good!!

I saw this film when it was out in theaters with my friends - "Fight Club" was sold out.

It was worst than bad to the point that we couldn't even laugh at it. Everyone in our group still considers this movie to be the WORST EVER.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Sci-Fi movie........2007-01-10

Even though this movie came out quit a few years ago, it is still very good and the effects are still good. Good for the sci-fi fan in your life...

Does anyone know if there is a real PG-13 version of this film? I've been told it came out as a PG-13 and then was changed to an R film. Pretty strange way to deal with a science fiction film that kids would want to see...

3 out of 5 stars A bomb from the Past Lingering to Fool Us........2006-10-08

Expecting lots of spectacular Star War's pyrotechnics out in space, I was in for a downer of everything lackluster, even the performances of the stars. Always I have gotten a kick out of James Spader's varied roles (he is a versatile actor and a delight to look at), but this one is low-key. In fact, you might think you were in a well-run library, with all of the dialogue so prosaic with no emotional whatsoever. Granted, some of the crew were supposedly sub-humans, like automatons with no sense of humor which was not programmed into them. However, they could take the place of women for the men's every need. The special effects were like primitive "Lost in Space" episodes in color no less.

There was nothing in the celesterial atmosphere to indicate a Supernova. They talk about one, but act as though they really don't know what it is. The alien, Karl, tricks Nighingale to come into a dangerous area of outer space and eventually dispenses with the crew. He is cruel, vicious to each and every one on board. They think he is one of them who had changed to become younger and stronger. Not so, he has turned into a monster and fights dirty. That is human; say goodbye, Karl. He showed no regret about using the young girl and tossing her out into space to meet her death.

This performance was lacking in every way; it was anything but super! Don't be negative? What's there to say about someone talking for 45 mintues in a monotone. We die so that stars can be reborn. Ridiculous. Stars die all the time in outer space, and there is always another to take their places -- just like humans on earth. The couple who survived to procreate were not human per se. Is this all there is to love.

2 out of 5 stars Eh...I've Seen Worse.......2006-07-30

If you want a review of the plot itself, complete with spoilers, feel free to read the other reviews.

My biggest beef with this movie is the fact that any suspension of disbelief is utterly killed, again and again, due to the fact that the script writers and director couldn't keep the story straight.

There is a homage to Asimov with the shipboard computer telling one of the crew that it can not let a human come to harm. That would have been fabulous if it had actually been adhered to in any other part of the film. There are a handful of these screw ups that kills any chance of the story being credible.

That said, it was a bit enjoyable. The cast did a fantastic job with what they were actually given. If the writers would have spent more time developing the characters than finding ways to get them naked, maybe I would have cared what happened to them.

The dimensional jump effect was quite novel and was the one thing in this movie that made me say, "Oooh, cool".

Good premise, good effects, good acting, but poor writing killed any chance at this being a good film.

4 out of 5 stars a new and very interesting view of the cosmos.......2007-05-19

This DVD presented a interesting information that really challenges older views of the universe. NOVA is generally excellent at making complex scientific principles accessible to the non-scientist, and this episode definitely did not disappoint. The questions raised by the possibility of an ever-expanding universe are endless, and it makes me realize just how much we don't know. Yet, everything was easy to understand and presented in a very interesting manner through the interviews with scientists and footage of their work. This is definitely a good DVD for folks interested in physics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent progress report.......2007-04-06

This program is a few years old now, but the gist of it remains true. We live in a time when astronomers are coming to terms with the fact that we simply do not know the nature of most of the material in the Universe. The show tells the story of how astronomers use supernovae to determine the rate of expansion of the Universe, and whether it will continue forever. The people involved are the best in the business, and most of them are engaging and even fun to watch. I've used this show many times in an astronomy class for non-scientists and they love it.

5 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2007-02-21

great info excellent presentation and good covering of a great theory i recommend it

5 out of 5 stars New theories about the expanding universe!.......2007-02-18

Before Albert Einstein died, he expressed a belief that there was a mysterious energy in the universe that held it together, yet couldn't be seen. He had no proof. In time, however, he came to believe that this thought was a blunder on his part. Now, as it turns out, he may have been right after all. This mysterious energy is known as Dark Energy and certain scientists believe that it occupies at least two-thirds of the known universe with Dark Matter filling most of the last third. Matter, as we know it, only occupies about five percent of the universe. This is part of what the NOVA espisode, Runaway Universe, deals with. There's also the race between two rival astronomy teams, each seeking to find evidence which shows that the expansion of the universe is not slowing down, but rather speeding up. Each team is able to gather the necessary proof for this new theory by observing certain types of exploding stars and the expanding heat and gases that erupt from them. Ten years ago, it seems that almost everyone thought the universe was going to stop expanding and that all the galaxies would eventually be drawn together for a gigantic implosion. Now, it looks as though that particular theory was wrong. What is the force that's causing the universe's expansion to accelerate? This is where the theory of Dark Energy may come into play. A number of today's scientists believe that Dark Engergy counteracts gravity. Rather than gravity pulling all of the galaxies together into one massive clump, Dark Energy may be keeping them apart while at the same time propelling them forward through infinite space and time. As well as discussing these new ideas, the Runaway Universe also has some breathtaking imagery of super novas and gaseous nebulae and spiral galaxies that were taken by the Hubble Space telecope and a much newer scope that enables scientists to see futher into darkness of our universe. If only I was eighteen years old, instead of fifty-six. The next fifty years are going to be astounding for astronomers as new knowledge and insight comes about, especially when we finally put a man on Mars. I wish I could be here for that moment.

2 out of 5 stars Awww, man ............2007-06-28

Well, another natural disaster movie begins so very promisingly and ends so disappointingly. Peter Fonda's role was the best part of the movie ... you can have the rest.

I saw it coming about halfway through the film when Luke Perry's character commented that his own equations were the basis of Peter Fonda's EOTW conclusion. My heart sank as the rest of the film was dedicated to the search for where he went wrong, turning out to be a plus sign where a minus sign should have been in his original calculations.

The sun stopped spitting fireballs at the Earth, no more cities or forests were laid waste, the bad guy was shot by the woman he'd terrorized, and the rains came and made everything better. Like, bummer!

I'm still searching for that EOTW via natural disaster movie that really *does* conclude with the end of the world. Does it exist out there somewhere? It must. I'll continue to look ... and no doubt encounter many more disappointments along the way.

This film was, bottom line, a let-down to the genre of natural disaster films. I could have done without it.

5 out of 5 stars Supernova.......2007-05-07

I really enjoyed the movie and it was received in great condition as promised and quickly and I will order from this compnay again.

4 out of 5 stars When Suns Explode.......2007-01-20

Peter Fonda is a wacky but brilliant astrophysicist. He has discovered that our sun is much older than previously believed and that it will go supernova in about a week. Fonda heads out to enjoy his final days without telling anyone. He did pass his findings to several other scientists around the world and that brings the US Government into play. Luke Perry worked with Fonda and everyone thinks he has the answers and knows where Fonda is. Meanwhile Fonda's predictions start to come true as the sun's behavior starts to cause havoc with magnetic fields and electronic communications.

Perry discovers that there are government plans to preserve humanity they just didn't expect such a complete disaster. But they start making their moves anyway. Perry's wife is terrified of a killer she survived and how is about to be executed. He escapes (no surprise there). Global conditions continue to worsen and the death toll begins to skyrocket. A supernova would destroy the entire solar system. The only hope is that Fonda made a mistake in his calculations. Will the world survive? Watch and find out.

I guess they didn't want to call this Nova (our sun isn't big enough to go supernova) but they did a good job of treating the story with a proper 'There will be no survivors' attitude an exploding sun would cause. The acting is pretty good while the effects are pretty lame considering what else Hallmark has created. Was the escaped killer sub-plot necessary? Probably not as such but it created more tension and stress for Perry. Other than calling the event a supernova there was a commitment to avoid science and scientific terminology for most of the story (makes it hard to pick holes in). For a disaster film this is better than the recent made-for-TV earthquake and storm films but not as well done as say The Day After Tomorrow. Check it out.

2 out of 5 stars Hallmark does it again....drag out drama.......2006-10-15

The standard Hallmark background music plays for hours on end. The world seems to be coming to an end due to a super nova. This mini-series will never come to an end.

Do we tell?
Who do we tell?
Is there an evil plot to the end?
Will Dr. Austin Sheppard (Peter Fonda) find time enough for love?
Will an evil being abduct Brooke and Haley?
Do we really care?

We get to watch some great acting by Tia Carrere, born on 1967 as Althea Janairo, 11 years after she gained acknowledgement in the blockbuster film "True Lies" (1994). And let's not forget Peter Fonda who played Frank in "The Passion of Ayn Rand" (1999).

2 out of 5 stars Too many subplots.......2006-07-29

This movie seemed to have some potential for science fiction, but got lost somewhere with all the subplots that had really nothing to do with what was really going on. The worst part was how the Earth was saved...The whole thing was a mistake...A math error made by our hero. I thought about it and decided that the hero was actually responsible for millions of deaths. If his math had been right, then maybe world governments could have built shelters or somethings instead of just trying to keep things quiet. Of course, since it was the hero the writers just skipped over his mistake hurting anyone and everyone just made happy that it was only a mistake in addition. Huh? Also, there is the issue of Emma Samms. When casting someone as a hard boiled maverick reporter, the first name that comes to mind is not Emma Samms. In fact on that list of potential actors or actresses to play a hard-boiled maverick reporter, Emma is probably not in the top thousand. That said, she did play the part sincerely if not convincingly. Perhaps too this is one of those rare films that would be better with the commercials. Definately a broadcast TV event. I really can't think of any reason to watch it though.

3 out of 5 stars Rekindling childhood fascination.......2006-11-10

I found this movie on Amazon after searching for it in several places. bought this DVD mainly to rekindle my childhood fascination which I caught a glimpse of its trailer as a kid but didnt have the money to watch back then. Until now. Didnt really think the movie really lived up to the thrill / fascination & curiosity I had for it as a kid. Some parts were still cool as I anticipated, sufficient suspense albeit extremely dated special effects (eg.like house invasion scene) but classic.
Major disappointment was the way the story chose to end.

4 out of 5 stars Better DVD transfer available.......2005-07-30

I have always liked this film but have avoided purchasing this stand alone DVD due to reviews here about the quality.I just purchased a 2 DVD/4 movie box called TIME TRAVELERS put out by Brentwood which has THE DAY TIME ENDED on it...and the transfer/audio/color and picture all look great to me,at least as good as my VHS copy...maybe even better. If you're a fan of the film seek out this boxset if the single DVD release isn't up to par.

2 out of 5 stars With a bit of a mind flip, you're into the time slip..........2005-01-29

`Their lives became a living hell...when past, present and future collided!' That's the tagline used on the DVD case for The Day Time Ended aka Earth's Final Fury aka Vortex aka Time Warp (1980). I knew how they felt for 90 minutes, watching this film (the DVD case states approximately 90 minutes, but it was more like 70 to 75 minutes)...okay, maybe it wasn't that bad, but you'd think a film credited with four writers could at least have made sense...rarely have I seen a film so lacking in direction or plot...directed by John `Bud' Cardos (Kingdom of the Spiders, Outlaw of Gor), the film stars Jim Davis (you may remember him as Jock Ewing on TV's Dallas), Dorothy Malone (Peyton Place), Natasha Ryan (Kingdom of the Spiders, The Amityville Horror), Marcy Lafferty, who was once married to William Shatner, both of whom appeared in 1977's Kingdom of the Spiders, along with the above mentioned Ryan, Scott C. Kolden (Sigmund and the Sea Monsters), and Christopher Mitchum (American Commandos, Magic Kid), son of actor Robert Mitchum (I'll saw one thing about Chris is that looking at his credits of low budget, schlocky B films, it doesn't look like he relied on nepotism to get good roles).

The film opens with a shot of outer space, and voice over I couldn't hear because of the accompanying music (poor sound editing), and also the sound quality on this DVD was very shoddy. This goes on for like three minutes, and the gist of it is there's a cosmic phenomena, three super novas colliding at once, and now, some many years later, the effects are reaching the planet Earth...the bulk of the film takes place in some southwestern desert, where patriarch Grant (Davis) has built a solar powered home (looking much like Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's funky little domicile on Tantooine in the film Star Wars, only not as good), away from all the hustle and bustle. Next we witness Grant and his son-in-law Richard (Mitchum) picking up the rest of the family at the airport, including Grant's wife Ana (Malone), Grant's daughter and Richard's wife Beth (Lafferty), the granddaughter Jenny (Ryan), and Grant's son Steve (Kolden). The group returns to the ranch, and soon strange things begin happening in the form of strange green lights inside the house, light switches not working, furniture in disarray, etc. Also, they begin witnessing lights in the night sky, and even the occasion UFO zipping by...during the night even stranger phenomena begin occurring in the form of really bad CGI and even worse stop motion effects of hostile, misshapen creatures fighting each other in the corral, outside the house. Apparently the effects of the trinary supernova have torn a new one in the time/space continuum, effectively creating a localized vortex on Grant's property (at least that's what I could get, as the film wasn't as forthcoming as it should have been). What's an isolationist family to do? I suppose when the fickle forces of nature give you cosmic lemons, you make cosmic lemonade...

I suppose my biggest complaint with this film was its' confusing, muddled, and utterly pointless plot. It actually took an hour before the audience was let in on what was going on (this was done by the unceremonious dumping of a small but steaming pile of exposition on the audience, as Davis' character, the rural rancher, becomes Mr. Physics during an epiphanic moment when he realizes `we're in a time warp, a vortex, if you will'...later we're treated to a much larger pile as the daughter, who got sucked into the vortex, and later returns relating about as much lameness as I could stand)...prior to that, we were treated to a series of odd (mostly stupid), unrelated events that never really lead anywhere, or had much purpose. I did get the impression there may have been a good, original concept here, but it was obliterated within the execution. The special effects are about as good as one might expect within a low budget feature as this, the main bulk of it being stop motion effects with creatures looking much like those (only not as good) from scene in Star Wars, on the Millennium Falcon, where the characters were playing a chess-like game, and minor effects featuring obvious CGI/blue screen work. The direction was pretty awful, especially noticeable during the scenes where the characters were supposed to react to special effects to be added later. I could almost imagine how it went... `Okay, now act shocked and scared, as that empty space will be occupied by a horrible monster once we insert it during post production'...'okay, I was going for shocked and scared, not perplexed and moronic'. The acting was pretty shoddy, but then I would be more inclined to blame this on the script and the director, as the talent was probably as confused as I was with regards to what was supposed to be going on in the film. Also, I thought the ending to be sort of a cop out.

The quality of the full screen, pan and scan print on this DVD isn't great, but I've seen worse. The real problem lies within the craptacular transfer. The picture has a stuttering, jittery quality that occurs anytime there's movement on the screen. I've never witnessed this particular problem before, but it's incredibly annoying, and lasts through nearly the entire film. The audio's poor, and my player indicates it's PCM 48Khz. There are a couple of extras featuring a montage of trailers for this film, and three more including Laserblast (1978), Creepozoids (1987), and End of the World (1977), along with some Full Moon Entertainment promotional materials. Is this film a cult classic? I'd say more of an oddity...if you're looking for a real cult classic, check out Don Johnson in A Boy and His Dog (1975). Another thing, the DVD case listed this as being rated R, but that's obviously a mistake...PG would be more applicable.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best NOVA episodes EVER.......2007-01-04

I've been waiting for 10 years for this NOVA episode to be available on DVD! This is one of the best NOVA programs in the long-running PBS series. It takes us inside the discovery of supernova 1987(a) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way).

What makes it so good? First, it presents the science accurately and in detail. My gripe with some of the more recent Nova episodes is that the science is watered down so much that you can't understand what is really going on. Not here. Although supernova astronomy has come a long, long ways since this episode was made nearly 20 years ago, it still gives you an excellent overview of what supernovas are and the astounding, titanic, almost incomprehensible amount of energy released in these explosions.

Second, and most importantly, it captures the excitement of science discovery better than any other episode of Nova. Yeah, a bold claim but I've seen every epsiode aired since 1975 and I stand by it. You will see an astronomer so excited by supernovas he becomes unable to speak. His walking away from the camera is one of my favorite Nova moments of all time. The passion of the other astronomers involved in this story is also revealed. This episode has not only an interesting subject (an exploding star in the nearest galaxy to ours), but is full of interesting people involved in the story--that's what makes it killer. And the event itself changes their lives.

Third, you will get an inside look at the process of discovery, and learn how astronomers communicated the discovery of a new object (at least in 1987--it's changed since then). This kind of detailed, inside information is what makes a documentary really ring.

If you are interested in astronomy, or in science in general you must see this Nova. It is outstanding!
