Theatrically released in 1991 as Highlander II: The Quickening, this sequel was later reedited and gained a small but loyal following (prompting a spinoff TV series), but at the time of its release critic Roger Ebert called it "the most hilariously incomprehensible movie ... almost awesome in its badness." In other words, you might find some guilty pleasure in this chaotic sequel to 1986's Highlander, in which Christopher Lambert reprises his role as Connor MacLeod, a member of the alien race known as "Immortals," banished to Earth from his home planet Zeist some 500 years ago. In the year 1999, Lambert owns a corporation that has created a shield to protect the Earth following the depletion of the ozone layer. But the shield is seized by an evil cartel, and Virginia Madsen plays a scientist who assists MacLeod in his mission to destroy the cartel. Sean Connery also reprises his role from Highlander as the Scottish Immortal named Ramirez (?!), but by the time he starts engaging in dashing swordplay you may wonder if he's wandered in from another movie altogether. Highlander fans welcomed the laserdisc and DVD release of this "renegade" director's cut, which attempts to clarify the original version's confusing plot. The DVD includes THX and AC-3 audio, director and producers' commentary, a generous photo archive, and an original documentary about the making of the film. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Good Television.......2007-02-21

Highlander the Series Season 2 continues the saga of Duncan MacLeod. Episodes continue to be good. A major character is lost and another gains something new. Charlie DeSalvo is introduced in this season. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Highlander Season 2.......2006-07-21

I purchased this item only because it was advertised as new. When the package arrived, I found that the box, while still sealed in plastic wrap, was very badly beaten up and otherwise damaged. So far I have not found any problems with the DVD's themselves, however, being a collector, the condition of the box is very important to me. Thus, I will not buy anymore DVD's or any other products of that nature from Amazon for fear of a similar occurrence.

3 out of 5 stars Re: Highlander Website/Prices.......2006-02-19

Amazon.com gives a better deal on shipping, but the official Highlander website has cheaper prices overall and you even get a few bonus novelties with your order...so what's a good compromise? Try the DeepDiscountDVD website for free shipping and each series at less than $30, then if you don't want novelties you aren't forced to pay extra for them.

2 out of 5 stars Highlander - the flop.......2007-07-01

Not a favorite 'Highlander' of mine. It lacked credibility. The fantasy of immortality was lost. Why? I'm thankful for "Highlander" and "Highlander - End Game".

1 out of 5 stars COULD ANYONE IMAGINE A WORSE MESS?.......2007-05-25

At least H2 was consistent: The worst scripting, worst directing, worst acting, worst casting, worst editing and worst everything else I've ever seen in a movie. It's the George Bush of movies.

What's worse is that they took one of the best premises around, the HIGHLANDER concept, and so messed and muddled it. In my book this mucked-up monster has replaced BATTLEFIELD EARTH as the most incomprehensible waste of money in cinematic history. (Whew. I feel better. Not much though; but the bad mental taste is somewhat exorcised.)

5 out of 5 stars A large scale, futuristic action movie with a charismatic star........2007-05-02

Four stars for this great looking futuristic environmentally theme action movie. And an extra star for the producers and director for having the tenacity to get the movie back to it's original intent. Of course, along the way they fixed up some of their own errors in judgement, too. Now the movie plays as well with the original.

When Loyds of London, who insured this movie, took over, they assembled the story in chronological order. This was not the intent of the director, who had planned the flash back style used in the first film. This type of story depends on the flashback style.

Some reviewers suggest that the additional 16 minutes are not so important. But I say, that's one sixth of an entire movie. Movies, such as "High Noon" have been made or broken on a mere 10 minutes of screen time.

The movie is filmed in 2:35 aspect ratio by the cameraman that went on to do "GoldenEye", and looks beautiful. The dramatic stylized lighting makes Lambert more intense and strikingly handsome than in the original.

He's an old man for the first 30 minutes of this movie, giving the story a real feeling of mortality vs. immortality. After killing his first attackers he is re-energized and youthened. Now he is able to find out the truth about the ozone protective shield he helped build. He'll try to get control away from the corrupt businessmen that now exploits the shield and the population of the planet. Very timely.

Lambert does all his own stunts in this movie, including the hover board flying and the ride down the top of an outside elevator. No blue screens or effects in both cases. It's great to see a large scale beautiful looking movie without the sometimes unrealistic looking CGI effects that are used today.

Sean Connery and Lambert are no longer teacher and student. Now they are equals. Culp and Cosby of the future. There's lots of humor to enjoy here, especially on Connery's part. To answer the question about how Connery came back from the dead, "Hey.......It's a kind of magic."

All the supporting actors are recognizable faces, with Michael Ironside using twisted humor as he stomps around the world creating havoc. Like taking a subway train on a high speed joy ride, crashing it, killing the passengers, and then announcing to the dead with glee, "Last stop." It's just the kind of thing a psychopath immortal would do.

As far as one reviewer complaining about Lambert "walking up to some strange woman and has sex with her up against a stone wall." She's the leading lady, they already established contact, went for a ride, and she watched him survive the first battle, and become young, handsome and frisky, and she needed his help to find the truth about the ozone shield. And besides, what two consenting (obviously consenting) adult mortal and immortals do, in the privacy of their own back alley in the future is their business. Plus, they got that over with quick and then could continue with the important talks of immortality, haunting memories of lost loves, and how to save the earth.

I bought all four Highlander features just now and watched them in two days, home alone, as morality tales about immortality should be watched. And for me, "There can be only two." The original and Highlander 2 "The Renegade version". I watched #2 twice, just to be sure, and enjoyed it twice.

Soon those who remember the original cut of this film will have their say, new viewers will watch it with unpolluted minds and enjoy this film on it's own merits. A large scale, quickly paced, fun and funny action tale of the future, with a theme that needs to be heeded more than ever.

2 out of 5 stars No Planet Zeist? GOOD, Added Rude Scenes - BAD!.......2007-04-05

I was all set to enjoy a different version of Highlander 2 when, in the first scene, the main character walks up to some strange woman and has sex with her up against a stone wall. Since when was our main character so rude and crude? Not my cup of tea. I watched this when I purchased it a few years ago so can't remember much else to comment on. Just a bad movie any way it is cut or added to.

4 out of 5 stars Finally we have what can now be called a worthy sequal.......2006-12-27

Highlander 2: The Quikening, has now been officially renamed
to simply: Highlander 2. The edition I am reviewing, is stating, it's "The Renegade Edition". However it was released only last year (2005 at the time of writing) and seems to fit with what folks are saying for this edition. I also own the original theatrical version and it's nice that the shield is now blue as opposed to the original red, which was possibly the silliest move in the movies creation ever. Good ridance to that.

I did like the fact that Highlander became a Sci-Fi as I'm a big fan of the genre. This is why many folks did not like this sequal. Not necessarily because the film is bad(I for one, disagree with this), simply because it took there beloved fantasy and turned it into something which was explainable within a Sci-Fi context. To this day, it's still the wish of the majority of Highlander fans that this film simply be dropped from the Highlander canon.

For those fans, please do take a look at this edition. The added material is fantastic and a god send for this sequal. Now the movie has a story which follows on from the original while still keeping the planet Zeist and the explanation of where the immortals come from intact. It also has a much better beginning and keeps McCloud more authentic.

The scene were the hole in the shield is investigated is superb and the working of the Sci-Fi concepts into the story finally makes sense. Admittedly it's not perfect sense with the feel that there should be a little more on the war on Zeist and tie-ins when McCloud is remembering that peice the build up to the creation of the shield with the events in the first movie. However as a big fan of the movie "Cashern", one thing I do like in movie is when not everything is explained in detail and things just happen. Life is like that. Things are not always explained in painful detail and most of the time, events occur around us in ways that we are not expecting.

Overall I would actually rate this movie 3.5, however the rating system only allows full stars. What it could still do with is more fillers(if only there was more footage). For example, the only scene that gets on my nerves now is where all our heroes are stuck in a detention cell in a maximum security centre and a spinning blade that covers the entire ceiling is spinning down to chop them into little peices. I liked how Sean Connerys character comes to the rescue with his style and flare, however it would have been better if they could have shown him transporting back to Zeist and a brief session with the council.

The over the top ending where guards are being fired at all over the place etc, has gone and we are presented with a straight show down and the destruction of the now defunct shield generator.

Besides the miraculous rescue scene where Connery disappears and the lack of build up in the relationship between McCloud and his new girlfriend(they begin kissing passionately after they have only just met, but I said to myself, it's because he's a recharged immortal and like Bond, has this way with women. What else could it be?)

The deleted scenes were nice and there were some really great scenes in there. I was totally horrified however at an alternate ending scene were McCloud and his newly aquainted girlfriend turn into spirits and twirl off into the stars. Apparently that's what happens in America when the theatrical is broadcast on national television.(Fellow fans you need to see this version).

Thankfully that ending is not in either of the versions I saw and I never want to see it again.

Overall for those of you who liked the idea of the sequal despite it's terrible editing originally, you will adore this. For those of you who didn't like the change from fantasy to Sci-Fi, you may find some good in this but are highly advised to stick to the original only.

Sean.

--Jeff Shannon

One must assume that Christopher Lambert signed a contract forcing him to make this second sequel to the 1986 cult film Highlander. Unless he was paid an enormous amount of money, there is no explanation for his appearance in this abysmal movie. The original feature, which was graced with the presence of Sean Connery, was a critical yawn but attracted a cult following on the strength of its supernatural story line. An overproduced and muddled sequel followed, as well as a syndicated TV series and a video flick spliced together from the series. One would think audiences had had enough of this clansman who can die only if decapitated. This installment begins 400 years ago, when Lambert is in Japan perfecting his swordsmanship with the aid of another immortal, a wizard who soon loses his head to a scenery-chewing Mario Van Peebles. The ebb and flow of warring energies cause the wizard's cave to close in on itself, sealing the evil Peebles inside a mountain for four centuries. Flash to the present: Peebles escapes his rocky prison and immediately goes in search of the lethargic Lambert. Though shot on location in Canada, France, Morocco, and Scotland, this has all the production value of a student film. Under the helm of music-video director Andy Morahan, the movie is jumpy and jumbled, leaping from one ridiculous scene to another. --Rochelle O'Gorman

3 out of 5 stars The Sequel To The Sequel, I Mean The Prequel To The Sequel, I Huh... Never Mind.......2006-07-19

Well thank goodness for a little return to sanity. There's no more planet Zeist in the storyline and Ramirez stays dead in 'Highlander: The Final Dimension', the third film in the Highlander series released in '95. Actually as things turn out this is not really the final dimension (i.e. installment). There's still one more to follow, fooled you again!

The third film is set up as a prequel to the second. MacLeod, still played by Christopher Lambert has left Scotland and eventually ends up in Japan where he makes friends with another powerful Immortal-sorcerer Nakano (Mako). As things always seem to turn out for MacLeod's friends, Nakano is killed by a rival Immortal-sorcerer named Kane (Mario Van Peebles) setting up a showdown between the Highlander and Kane.

This film is definitely not as good as the original, but it's a far cry better than the previous sequel. Some good fantasy, action/adventure fun for Highlander fans. It's not just swordplay anymore, now sorcery has been added to the equation.

4 out of 5 stars The third movie is the real sequel to the first one.......2005-12-28

Don't get me wrong, I like the second movie, but more like an imaginative science fiction story. This one, also called he Sorcerer, is the real sequel of the first movie, that continues the mithology as it really is in our world. The plot is inspiring, and it have great action scenes.

1 out of 5 stars Highland Garbage........2005-12-09

This film makes no sense, and really doesn't fit into the highlander timeline.
it starts off 400 years before and Mcleod is hanging out in a cave in fuedal japan with some sorcerer Dude., how he got there is a complete mystery.
then in walks the bad guys, another bunch of sorcerers and they are immortal. Well there is battle and our hero wins out and the cave collapses.. Cut to 400 years later and an archaeological team discover the cave and the sleeping immortals awaken, their clothes still in pristine condition after all the centuries, must have been sprinkled with pixie dust. The main bad guy Kane, kills the other Dudes and then teleports to New York to hunt Mcleod, oh and Kane now speaks fluent English.
Usual crap then insues and mcleod saves the day.
absolute crap-don't waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars A Battle Through the Ages..........2005-09-10

After managing to cultivate a massive cult following, the 'Highlander' franchise seemed to be doing well. Though the original film "Highlander" is beloved, the sequel "Highlander 2: The Quickening" was panned by most fans (that is until the release of the Director's Cut), but despite the lackluster reaction of the fans to the sequel, the tv series that was spawned brought many back into the fold. So, it really should come as no surprise that Dimension Films would choose to release another Immortal adventure with "Highlander: The Final Dimension". With the release of this movie, which is actually set before the second film, many fans thought that this would redeem the franchise. Not to disappoint this movie did redeem the franchise in my opinion, and actually serves as a direct sequel to the original film, allowing audiences to forget about the events of "Highlander 2: The Quickening".

"Highlander: The Final Dimension" takes place in the present day, and Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) apparently had been tricked into believing he was the only Immortal remaining after the events of "Highlander". Now, an enemy from Connor's time spent in feudal Japan has tracked MacLeod down in the present day, and is determined to take his head and receive the Quickening from Connor. Now this evil Immortal, Kane (Mario Van Peebles), will stop at nothing to take his revenge on Connor, even if that means killing Connor's new girlfriend (Deborah Unger) or his adopted son. Whatever it takes to win, because 'In the end, there can be only one.'

Many fans felt that "Highlander: The Final Dimension" did a decent job of bringing the franchise back into modern days and allowed them to ignore the events of "Highlander 2: The Quickening". However, other fans thought that this 3rd film in the 'Highlander' franchise still didn't manage to recapture what made the original film so great, while others felt that it simply copied the first film. Personally, I think that "Highlander: The Final Dimension" was a good continuation to "Highlander" and did an good job of redeeming the franchise after the 2nd installment. So, basically if you are wanting to watch the 'Highlander' series, here is the order to view the movies in. First of course is the original film, "Highlander", followed by "Highlander: The Final Dimension", and rounding out the series is "Highlander: Endgame". Now, if you want you can watch "Highlander 2: The Quickening" and if you do, view it as an alternate reality in the 'Highlander' universe, otherwise it could ruin your view of the franchise as a whole.

Though not as good as the original film, "Highlander: The Final Dimension" is a good follow-up sequel and redeemer for the franchise. Recommended for fans of the 'Highlander' franchise, or casual viewers that enjoyed the original film or are just looking for a decent fantasy film. However, if you have not seen the original film, you probably should before you watch this sequel, so that you understand the backstory involved for Connor MacLeod.

"Highlander: The Final Dimension" is rated R for violence, language, and nudity/sexuality.

3 out of 5 stars The best sequel yet, but nowhere near a good film.......2004-01-03

Some fans will strike me for this, others will clap me on the shoulder, but in my opinion, HIGHLANDER III: THE SORCERER is the only trustworthy, even average sequel to HIGHLANDER. Let's face it - HIGHLANDER II can't even be considered a sequel, while HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME was a complete waste of potential.

Released in the U.S. as HIGHLANDER: THE FINAL DIMENSION, H3 has immortal Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert, back and better than ever) realizing that he didn't win The Prize, and that some immortals still remain: one of whom is evil sorcerer Kane (Mario Van Peebles). After Kane is freed from a 400-year slumber, he journeys to New York City seeking the Highlander. There MacLeod must do battle again. The game may have changed, but the rule remains the same: in the end, there can be only one.

First of all, let me say that while it's nowhere near a good movie, HIGHLANDER III is very entertaining and actually quite fun to watch. It's almost even a remake of the first film. Everything we want to know is explained (including why we have HIGHLANDER sequels!), and ... *sigh* Deborah Unger is included ...

Surprisingly, the film was also the only HIGHLANDER movie to get a PG-13! (The director's cut, however, is back to an R for a couple of sex scenes)

HIGHLANDER III also bears the most resemblance to HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES, which was, at the time, being filmed. It also features Loreena McKennit's "Bonny Portmore", one of the most beautiful songs ever written, which was featured in H:TS and later in HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME.

For every 1 good review of this film there are 10 bad ones. I think you'll just have to rent it yourself (Director's Cut, only) and see what you think. I thought it was the only reliable HIGHLANDER sequel yet.

The rule still remains: there can be only one. And so far, it applies to the sequels as well.

      5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-06-28

I've always enjoyed the "Highlander" movies, specifically the swords. I've been fascinated with swords since I was about 5 yrs old. Anyway, it's not a GREAT great film, but it does have a lot of good action in it. I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't scared of a little bit of head rolling, swords swinging, and general fantasy flicks.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER WITH EACH VIEWING.......2007-06-07

When I first watched "Highlander: The Final Dimension" a few years ago, I was disappointed. But after watching the film a couple of more times, I started to warm up to it more. True, its still the worst film in the series, but it is still a pretty good movie. The story is a bit weak due to the fact that the writers pretty much rehashed the plot for the first film. Still, the acting is great, and the battle scenes are pretty dang good. While non-fans will find little to enjoy in the film, established fans will be pleased for the most part.

      4 out of 5 stars Highlander3.......2007-02-20

An interesting and exciting movie. Brings another eposode to the story. Enjoyed it for the action and the detail. Worth watching and owning.

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a rehash, but an enjoyable sequel to 1986's "Highlander".......2007-01-05

Ignoring the events of "Highlander 2," this film picks up 9 yrs after the first. We find MacLeod living with his adoptive son in Morocco and satisfied that he is the last immortal and has the coveted "Prize." Soon he recieves a cognition that more immortals are alive (revived from "death" by an archeological dig) and packs for NYC for a duel with the evil sorcerer immortal Kane.

Made while the tv show was at its peak, this film benefits from the influence of its narrative and production style that had been refined over the years. Most of the characters and their relationships (especially the love interests) are thin and underdeveloped. The movie relies heavily on nostalgia for the 1st film for the impact of its emotional scenes. It also mirrors it's story to the point of being a near remake. The police hunt subplot simply drops out of the picture near the end and the villians were too silly. The special f/x are enjoyable but underused (Kane barely uses his illusions during fights.)

Still, the deja vu and pretention and trickery themes are well handled (though not explored as much as they could have been). Lambert is as appropiately meloncally and good humored as in previous entries, van Peeples is clearly having fun with his deliciously devilish over the top performance, Unger is quite attractive (even more so in the obligatory sex scene, of course), and Mako's dignified presence is, of course, a welcome addtion to the "Highlander" saga. The special f/x were good for there time and still fairly impressive today. The DVD is barebones though, and the picture has not been cleaned up.

The concept of immortals and their eternal battle are not explained in this movie and may leave the unintiated confused. Seeing "Highlander" first or doing a little net research may be required for understanding. Overall, a competent production and a worthy if underdeveloped and rushed sequel to the 1986 film.

4 out of 5 stars A true sequal to the original, although the first stood alone........2006-07-04

This is the Third installment of the Highlander movie series, and it is truly the sequel to the first. Againg, the first movie was never intended to have a sequel, but this one did a better job at addapting the first movies story line. Remember, the second movie (the Quickening) was never really intended to be a sequel and to be a different piece of the puzzle, although it was a calculation that misfired with fans and the box office because it did use sean connery and christopher lambert again. The action is good, and it stays true to the highlander themes. But, this movie essentially is the first one retold again, with the explanation that "oops, I guess there was one more alive", a lame cop out to get a sequel. But, again for the collector, you will need this movie in the collection. It is good as a primer to watch the first one again.

          Product Description

With the ultimate throw-down, "There can be only one," Highlander captured the imaginations of fantasy fans seeking a well-executed swordplay epic, becoming a cult classic in the process. Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) is one of a waning few survivors of a clan of immortals The breed have been dueling each other for centuries in the quest to be the last one remaining, and hence achieve a supreme enlightenment that would be dangerous in the wrong hands. The immortals can only die by decapitation, so they hunt each other through time and across continents to meet for each decisive duel, which will bring one of them a step closer to ultimate power. In present-day America, the troubled hero MacLeod lives a brooding and lonely existence, having lost his true love centuries ago. The evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown), an immortal who plans to use his power toward unspeakable ends, has fought MacLeod before but is still trying to finish him off. After emerging victorious from a parking garage skirmish with the third-to-last immortal, MacLeod knows that only Kurgan is left, and the two are on a collision path toward the inevitable. In the film's numerous flashbacks to the past, Sean Connery plays Ramirez, the immortal who first tutors MacLeod after the hero survives a mortal battle wound, prompting his fearful village to banish him. Roxanne Hart plays MacLeod's modern-day love interest, who tries to help him while struggling to believe his incredible story.
