Following the grisly 1997 Cube and its 2002 sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, Cube Zero stretches the original's The Twilight Zone-like, strangers-in-a-box theme a little thin. Fortunately, there's a difference this time. The hero is not just another disoriented captive of the Cube's interconnected--often lethal--rooms, but rather a geek named Eric (Zachary Bennett) who sits in a control station wrestling with his conscience about inflicting misery on innocent people. Taking orders over the phone from some almighty, unknown power in a distant office, Eric reaches a breaking point and enters the maze himself, intent on helping a woman (Stephanie Moore) who doubts his motives. The existential bent of the prior films becomes even more Kafkaesque this time with the arrival of a white-collar team of tormentors, bureaucratic tyrants who can't or won't explain the point of the Cube. Imaginative writer-director Ernie Barbarash rescues what might have been a tedious formula flick. --Tom Keogh
Description
Every nightmare has a beginning. In this prequel to the cult hit Cube, one of the most successful sci-fi thrillers of the last decade, a new group of unwilling participants frantically moves through an ominous construct of cube-shaped rooms. Each room holds the threat of hideously inventive and painful death. Finding the real exit, however, may not offer the freedom one seeks.

Great sequal, .......2007-06-17
Best sequal to the amazing origional. This film is just as good as the origional classic. Great effects, lots of awesome traps, and no CGI. Awesome.
I liked this sequal.......2007-04-09
I liked this sequal to the Cube movies. It does have it's scary parts of the movie as well as it's tense ones as well. The Cube series is a much different thriller than most of the movies in this genre. That is why I do like it so much because it is "different". In this sequal, it does give a "2 level lab rat" story and does also give a reason for their being "trapped". I highly recommend this movie to all of the Cube fans out there. You won't be disappointed.
Only for the curious who watched the original Cube.......2007-01-31
If you found your way to this movie you probably watched the original Cube. What a great movie that was. People getting chopped up in interesting ways, the isolation, desperation, group dynamics, sci-fi big brother element, and the whole metaphor for modern life elements. Wow.
However, riding on that success was Cube 2: hypercube, which in my mind was only good in so much as it explained things about this history of the Cube.
So now there is Cube Zero. If you made it through the first Cube (pun intended), and through Hypercube, watch this. However, in my mind this is the most silly, almost "Brazil" like in it's dumb characters and lines, and technology used. I don't want to give anything away, but trust me, keep your expectations low and you'll enjoy it if you saw the others. However, if you've never watched the original, OR if you did and didn't like it, stay well clear of this movie...go watch something else. Maybe Fight Club, or if you want some sci-fi, Equlibrium (that movie should have gotten more attention in my opinion). Good luck and hope you wake up where you went to sleep.
Big Fat Zero.......2006-11-10
"Cube Zero" mearly satisfied my curiousity about what existed outside the CUBE but still leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Perhaps "CUBE 4" will answer these questions...someday. Try renting it first.
Deeper than you think..........2006-07-28
There are two Truths about the Cube: Everyone wakes up with the same questions (Who am I? and Why am I here?) and everyone dies in the Cube. Some last longer than others, and some are killed by their fellow Cubists, but in the end the Cube always wins. Everybody who enters the cube dies in it, and usually in horrifying ways. Nobody gets out alive. Ever. Well, there might be one exception...
The Cube is a metaphore for Life, or the World, or Human Existance. We're all here on earth with the same questions, and we all die in the end. The key to the movie is at the exit scene: "Do you believe in God?" - "What kind of God would do this to people?!?" *bzzzt* Wrong answer. Burned alive in hell. But what would happen if someone said yes? Barbarash leaves this question unanswered and open to our own interpretations...
While I do not agree with Barbarash's conclusions and I'm really not into slasher/horror flicks I really did like this movie. I don't think it'll ever be considered a great film by anyone, but I like movies that have deeper meanings (Donnie Darko or The Ninth Configuration) that are not readily apparent and this one took me a day to figure out. Ultimately, Cube Zero is an inditement against God: He either does not exist, or he's a sadist taking pleasure in tormenting people. This is a common view, but just as far off base as those who think that God is nothing but Love - He is both Holy and Just AND Love and Mercy. He is also not impressed that people simply 'believe in Him' or acknowledge His existance, but for the sake of the movie Barbarash's vision works.
Please note I did NOT see either Cube or Hypercube first, and I am reviewing this one as a standalone movie. I will definitely check them out based on seeing this one, though.
