Mothra Vs Godzilla.......2007-06-10

I like the fact that Toho is releasing all there older Monster movies in a new dvd case.I look forward to seeing more of the movies being released so I can add them to my collection. One thing I would have liked to have seen with the movies being redone is to have the audio done in 5.1 dolby sound, than the standard audio format that they were originally done in.

the terror of the titles.......2007-05-28

This fine film is destroyed by the titles. Some are on the film itself and some are on the black band below the image. The former are hard to read. But worst of all, some are split between both of the above and will give you a horrible headache. Why doesn't anyone seem to care about the placement of titles? A fun film that deserves better.

This is one of the best re-issue DVD series I've seen in a long time. Classic Media knows what we want and gives it to us.

* A great-looking transfer of a classic film.
* Informative commentary
* Not too expensive

The best thing about this series of re-issues, is, of course, the inclusion of the dubbed American versions alongside the original Japanese versions. This allows the hardcore Godzilla fans to see the movies as they were originally made, while giving stoned couch potatoes the campy dubbed verisons they remember from Saturday afternoon Creature Features ("Hey look! His lips are moving but he's not making any sound! Haw haw haw haw!").

A lot of DVD companies would either confuse the consumer with two separate releases, or release "Deluxe 2-DVD" versions of every movie (as with the original Godzilla movie), but Classic Media gets it right by putting both versions on the same disc and releasing it at an affordable price (with great graphics to boot).

It doesn't hurt, either, that this is one of the best of the original Godzilla sequels, presented in all its fabulous widescreen Tohoscope glory. Even if you're just a casual Godzilla fan, this one belongs in your collection. As for me, I can't wait for the release of the Ghidorah movies and War of the Gargantuas later this year! Godzilla-lovers rejoice!

Godzilla's Finest Hour.......2007-05-18

At long last American fans of Godzilla can affordably enjoy what many rate as their favorite Godzilla feature. This Sony/Toho Master Series release brings us both the classic AIP dubbed American release print titled Godzilla VS The Thing, and the original Japanese version Mosura Tai Gojira with english subtitles, for those who prefer authenticity. There are great extras including interviews and audio commentary by American Godzilla experts. It's priced irresistably at less than $20! I didn't wait on this one, and will always cherish it.

That's right, they didn't stop making Gozilla films in the mid-'70s like you thought, but resurrected the rubberized reptile in the mid-'80s and have continued making crazy, clear-your-Saturday-afternoon-schedule offerings to this very day. And here in this double-feature disc are two of the craziest from the early '90s.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidora involves some western folks in a flying saucer from the future who come back to warn Japan of its imminent demise by Godzilla. But their real aim is to aid in that destruction, thus keeping Japan from becoming an economic powerhouse. Along the way, some cute little creatures they've brought with them are transformed into King Ghidora, the not-so-cute nemesis of Godzilla, and the two inevitably battle it out as unwitting champions of their times. The special effects are tops, the action is silly and pulpish, and the plot is lifted partially from Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (1968). If you don't watch this film with a silly grin on your face, you just aren't a Godzilla fan.

Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth is a variation on one of the best of the old Godzilla films, Godzilla vs. The Thing (1964). When a meteorite hits the Earth, Godzilla is awakened, along with Mothra and his evil twin Battra, the Black Mothra! Mothra must save the Earth from these scourges, with the help of its minions, the Cosmos, those twin miniature girls who sing the eerily beautiful Mothra theme from the earlier film. And the special effects are even more impressive and hallucinatory than before, if that's possible.

The pleasure of seeing these rarities on DVD is only slightly hampered by their truncated aspect ratios; yes, Mothra's widescreen wings have been clipped down to paltry pan and scan, and thus denuded of its native Tohoscope. --Jim Gay

Dissapointed.......2007-04-02

When I first got this movie, I was hoping there would be more action in it. I was wrong.
Godzilla v.s. King Ghidorah is good, but only when Godzilla shows up and kills King Ghidorah. There's too much talk about how to deal with the lizard, which is totally pointless. Just kill the lizard!

Godzilla v.s. Mothra is better, but it's slow to get to the action, and when you see this movie you think that Battra is the bad guy not Godzilla.
And there's propiganda in this movie about the environment. The idea about a meteor coming to destroy earth is just plain dumb.

All in all this is a decent DVD.

Godzilla vs King Ghidorah:

While best appreciated by true Godzilla fans, this movie is actually a pretty good science fiction story in its own right. A tricked out space craft with time travel ability presents some intriguing plot possibility that keeps the audience wondering. One interesting insights is how the story portrays what Japan will become in the future. Add to that a back story that presents the origins of both Godzilla and Ghidorah and you end up with one of the best Godzilla movies ever made.

Godzilla and Mothra:

This is basically an updated movie of the early flicks involving Mothra. Worth watching if you're a big Godzilla or Mothra fan.

I really can't decide whether to give this four or five stars. But since I gave G vs. Gigan 4 stars, I guess this should be given five, just barely.

vs. King Ghidorah Could be dissappointing to some King Ghidorah fans. The verion of King Ghidorah seen here is really weak compared to the Showa series.

The second movie was the first time I've seen one that had a focus on Mothra. It's interesting considering its partly based around a prop, but I guess its better than the movies centered around Mothra, where the movie is centered around a prop.

But since I haven't seen any Mothra movies or other movies where Mothra plays a large part I can't really compare it to anything.

Godzilla's Best.......2006-02-25

These two remakes of the earlier 60's and 70's movies are excellent. Besides the fact that they use better effects, the two moves begin a series of movies which actually have a contiguous story line... Once again they return to the original Godzilla movie from the 1950's and point to the Second World War in the Pacific. Godzilla here is not just a representation of the "A" Bomb reaking havoc, but also the conscience of the Japanese people. Very good...

Great movies but the Collection is without merit.......2006-12-31

First off, these are all good to excellent Godzilla
flicks - lots of fun and worth owning. I give 2 stars
because if you don't happen to already own any of these,
you can at least get an instant collection for a fairly
good deal (low price).

The bad news is for those who are not new to Godzilla and
who have a collection already: all Sony did, from the looks
of it, is bundle up the back stock of previously released dvds.
There are no decent extras to speak of. This collection
features 9 movies on 7 disks as follows (two disks are double
features).

The Good:

Yes, there is some good here! The following are how ALL the
movies should have been handled and would have made this a more
solid effort on Sony's part:

Godzilla x Megaguirus, GMK and Godzilla x Mechagodzilla are
all in High Definition, offer English and Japanese soundtracks
and english subtiltles, which is the way ALL Godzilla flicks
should be presented in this day and age of DVDs.

The Bad:

Godzilla x Mothra Battle for Earth and Godzilla x Ghidorah.
A travesty because these are STILL not presented in their
original aspect ration; they have NO JAPANESE soundtrack and don't
even have close captioning/English Subs. These are the exact
same Full Screen-No Frills copies that have been floating around
for years - whats up with Columbia Tristar!?

Godzilla x Space Godzilla and Godzilla x Destroyah. Great
flicks which are at least in widescreen. Columbia Tristar
still held off from including a Japanese soundtrack!

Godzilla 2000 - still just an English dub here folks, sorry.
At least its in widescreen; there is also a comentary track and
a few other nice extras which lift this disk up a bit.

The Ugly:

Godzilla 1998 - including this movie was weak. It isn't
all that bad if you can forget it bears the title of a
Godzilla movie because that's where any similarities end. It
doesn't need further comment except to say its a dinosaur
movie with lots of CGI effects and no heart. Its worth
seeing for the general viewer of hollywood style flicks.

In conclusion, Sony didn't do anything to make this a more
interesting collection for the long-time, long-term fan. I'm
not as sour on Sony/Columbia Tristar as I may sound here, but
this release just doesn't have anything extra.
Sony will have little to say to those who seek out bootlegs
or versions released from other countries in order to view
the movies as they were originally released.

50th Anniversary Editions:
Better news is that the other earlier 70s Godzilla flicks
(GxMegalon, GxGigan, GxMechaGodzilla etc.) were released
with English and Japanese dubs. Hoo-Ray for Columbia Tristar!

Don't bother with this if you love Godzilla.......2006-07-26

This is probablythe worst set of movies to be put together. Even "Godzilla vs Megalon" had MORE HEART and Fun than these rejects. Watch the classics if you can-they are all much better and more family friendly. People used to MTV quality and trash movies though will probably go Ga-GA over these efforts though.

Buy the special edition Gojira or english subtitled Japanese language Godzilla movies out or soon to be released instead.

If any of you are familiar with The Curmudgeon's other reviews, you may well be scratching your heads at this one. A FIVE star review?! That can't be right. And usually, YOU would be right. The Curmudgeon has dedicated 95 of his 100 reviews to bringing you the very worst things out there. To celebrate the 50 review milestone I reviewed 5 GREAT things that are available on Amazon, and so, now I've reached 100, I thought I'd do the same again. So, from reviews 100 - 105, it's going to be nothing but good, great and awesome stuff.

Sometimes there's no justice. The term "Giant Monster Movies" immediately throws up two names: Godzilla and King Kong. The two kings of the genre have never really been fairly matched, however. Whilst Godzilla has a far greater quantity of movies, the big monkey certainly wins out in the quality stakes. Godawful 70's remake and sequel aside, Kong has fared better in the original movie (easily one of the greatest movies ever made) and the new glossy big budget remake certainly fared better than the abysmal 90's US attempt at Godzilla.

Speaking of THAT film, it's included on this boxset. Now let us never speak of it again. There's far better films to consider, all of which embrace the sense of adventure, inventiveness and fun that make this genre such a joy to watch. This boxset collects some of the more recent efforts, miles away from the more kiddie-friendly fare of the 70's movies. These are far more, um, realistic(?) in approach, a nod to the more serious side of the Big G. It's a superb collection that, crappy American attempt aside, will please anyone who don't salivate over the latest 100 million dollar CGI-fest. A guy in a suit it may be, but the genius of these movies is their ability to make you believe that it's a bad ass radioactive dinosaur trashing Tokyo for the millionth time.

This review isn't just about this boxset in particular, but Godzilla movies in general. If you can accept the often ropey effects, the absurd plots and wonky dialogue, they offer a sense of escapism that is unmatched. These movies have a passion and genuine love for their monsters that is so infectious, it isn't long before you know all of the monsters and are cheering on your favourites ("Go Mecha-Godzilla! Wooooh!")

King Kong and Godzilla, then. Kong may have the better movies, but Godzilla remains the better - and best - monster. Regardless of all the "final movie" comments (pah, I'll believe it when I see it) - long may his reign continue.

And that's part four of five taken care of. Just one more thing that The Curmudgeon actually likes. But what on earth could it be? Only one way to find out...

What can be better than a giant lizard fighting a giant moth? Not much if you ask me, and this film has that and much, much more, including mystery, intrigue, and tiny little people in polynesian garb. This is a must see for any aspiring Godzilla fan.

as many thers have already reviewed this classic, i will make it short and sweet.

lets just say that the twin girls, all 11" of them, have mysteriously enchanting voices. mothra cares about us more than "the man" does, and the photographer dresses as smartly as her character is. please, for the love of larvae, watch this. who cares if it is letterboxed, or full screen... it is a gem.

you will laugh, cry , and perhaps pee a little. seriously, this is one of the best worst movies EVER!

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!! "Godzilla VS Mothra" Is a great movie, it is a shame that it is presented here, with this DVD, in a full screen format. I just watched the uncut, Japanese LETTER BOX version DVD a friend loaned me, and was greatly disappointed at just how much the American full screen formatted version destroys the film. Do yourself a favor and don't wast your time or money on this FULL SCREEN PIECE OF CRAP, for it is unworthy of a space in your DVD collection. Wait for the letter box version.

this was a very good with some neat scenes and cool milatary stuff but i think this movie needs more destruction in here like when godzilla attacks nogoya he could destroy more then that but other then that it's a good movie.

The Best Rubber Suit.......2005-09-02

In my opinion, the best of all Godzilla movies ! The first while definitely a classic, but a little anti climactic with the poor underwater scenes .

Synopsis: A enormous Airbus-size egg is washed onto the shores of a Japanese harbour. A greedy, enterprising businessman, who is developing a huge adjacent property, sees the profit in such a venture to display this oddity of nature, washed up on the beach from Mothra's/It's Island where atomic experimentation had taked place. .

A very pretty photographer and her reporter freind from a local newspaper put their noses a little too deep into the story and eventually wake Godzilla who happens to be hibernating on the land about to be developed.

In the meantime, two miniature women from It's Island plead for the return of Mothra's egg, warning catastrophe is inevitable if the greedy people do not concede. Godzilla, being extremely pissed off for having been woken, proceeds to wreak destruction across the city.

At this point, it is worth mentioning that, while the expensive high speed photography is gone , the various effects in this chapter of the big, bad rubber guy are likely the best of the series. The animated lightning in one of the attempts to destroy Godzilla are very well done and the "matte" lines are all but invisible .

Having been refused the return of Mothra's egg the scientists who realize the extent of the danger ask the inhabitants of Mothra's Island to help them destroy Godzilla.

This is the part of the film that has a suprising twist. I won't tell the ending but this particular chapter of the film is suprisingly touching and the dialogue is intelligent. The discussion between the girls, natives and scientists is very insightful and lends much to the film's narration. .

The "small women" are strangely haunting. While the movie is great fun for a rainy Saturday with young family members, on a late night in the dark, on first viewing, this movie is certainly the most prophetic and insightful of the Godzilla series.

Mothra attempts to defeat Godzilla to protect its offspring and fails in the end. Warming the egg after it's death, the egg hatches with twin larvae that avenge it's parent's death .

While future Toho movies centered around more action, destruction and explosions, which is all great fun, this is likely the only one of the series that, taken in context, is memorable and leaves afterthoughts.

If you choose one Godzilla movie to own, this is definately the one to get. Stands up to repeated viewing and while there are no wrestling matches as in later 70s entries, and miniatures are obviously miniatures, the film holds up to it's name with a great story, haunting music, great effects and an open ended conclusion to allow fun but inferior movies to come.

Highly recommended!!!

One of the Best of the 60's Godzilla Movies.......2006-12-05

This DVD is available, but only from Classic Media's website. I believe they have made the decision to distribute this and Godzilla Raids Again only thru thier site.
Watching this on my HD TV and using an upconverting player, both versions of the movie look very good. Perfect? No and I do wish they had taken the effort to clean the prints up (esp the American version).
A great bonus is he audio commentary. It's very interesting and informative. Lots of back story info and a couple of short interviews to boot.
Very nice cover and packaging, the included the Japanese trailer as an extra. A nice addition to my collection.

Got my hands on it, not as good as I had hoped.......2006-11-22

My review is mostly about the DVD and not the movie.

I was a bit disappointed by this DVD release but overall it is better than the previous DVD release for this film, namely the Simitar DVD. If you have the Simitar DVD, DO NOT throw it away, yet.

The Good

1.) Both the Japanese and English versions here are available. Both in a widescreen format. On the English version many of the visual problems are fixed, mainly dealing with color.

2.) The English version contains the original AIP dubbing, thank goodness!! Meaning if you grew up with this film, it is as you remember it. Of course, I'm not sure Toho ever did their own cut of this film.

3.) The DVD cases are very stylish and I love the cover and art inside.

4.) DVD features include commentary and trailers, nothing all that special here, but take that with a grain of salt as special features are rarely in my field of interest.

The Bad

1.) For the English version, Classic media decided not to use a true widescreen format(meaning 2:35:1) they instead use 1:78:1 and although it isn't bad, it's not the same. Luckily, instead of just saying "It's what we decided to use, and that's all." they gave an explanation. This is what I meant by not throwing away your Simitar video. :) Note, the Japanese version is a true widescreen(2:35:1)cut. Below is their explanation:

"The DVD also features the original U.S. version, Godzilla vs, the Thing, which has a running time of 88:07. After comparing the available source materials, it was decided to not use the scope version previously released on DVD because it has several problems including missing dialogue and special effects footage, out of synch audio, and poor color that weakened the quality of animated effects. Instead, Classic Media chose a downconvert from a High Definition Master that presents Godzilla vs, the Thing complete and in top quality at 16×9 widescreen (approx. 1:78:1). "

2.) This part is the biggest problem, they didn't remaster it..... why?!?!
Don't get me wrong the film is pretty good in quality but there is still visual defects that range from negligible to mildly annoying. And though, the color in this version is better than the true widescreen, it's still rather dull at times. Do not expect this film to be on level visually with Sony's DVD releases which were remastered and are pretty darn crisp.

3.) The DVD cases, though very nice, don't stay closed! This can be very annoying when taking it off the shelf.

It was a good attempt, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 7.5. I really wish they had taken the time to fix the widescreen version of the English version instead of taking this shortcut. The 1.78 isn't bad and most people won't care, but it just isn't the same.

It is a tragedy for an entire generation of kaiju fans that so many Godzilla classics--Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs Megalon, Godzilla 1984, etc--are still not available on DVD.

IN 1964 THE LAST GREAT GODZILLA FILM WAS RELEASED... MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA (GODZILLA VS. THE THING).......2006-11-03

The Godzilla suit is of the finest ever created for any Godzilla flick, except King Kong vs. Godzilla 1962( my opinion).This really is the the last great Godzilla movie ever made. After 1964 Godzilla had some shining moments in his later movies, but Godzilla movies from 1965 on were made with absolute sillieness and really no seriousness. The one exception was Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster 1966 this had some sillieness but had just enough seriousness to make it an adequate Godzilla movie. The 1970s were Godzillas whimp stage and his movies showed it. Sony Wonder does an excellent job with the film transfer and sound as it did with Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster and Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (1971). You almost swear Godzilla vs. Mothra was filmed a few years ago, (not 43 years ago). the same could be said with the other two titles I mentioned. The one point I will bring out in this review is the genius of Ikira Ifakube. Ifakubes music score for Godzilla movies were used repeatedly in later Godzilla movies, but in Godzilla vs.Thing Ifakubes musical art is clearly heard in this film. Note when Mothra first arrives as Godzilla is ready to destroy the egg, Godzilla stares at Mothra ready to battle, the camera zooms closely on Godzillas face and all you hear is Ifakubes echoey like symbols in the background you really feel Godzillas fury. Story, music aside Amazingly and effective you feel the action and emotion in this film thanks to the directing of Inoshiro Honda and Akira Ifakubes brilliant music score.This movie does have a message to it about over land development and greedy humans of rich wealthy companies that don't care about nature or the enviroment they only care about development for profit. As Godzilla is trouncing Japan you see large scale factories being destroyed, portraying mankinds over development and pollution of the enviroment in the name of profit. Godzilla vs. Mothra shows how sometimes these greedy wealthy humans get more than they bargained for. The Mothra twins are cool and capture the 1960s with a flower power punch. I just wish the ending would have had Godzilla triumph. This movie really is a sci-fi epic I dont care what any fan or critics say. Godzilla vs. Mothra (or the Thing) is an incredible sci-fi adventure to be enjoyed by old and new G fans alike. The 1960s Toho Pictures golden age.................

More visually splendid and imaginatively written than the other Godzilla sequels, this (the fourth in the series) starts when Mothra's gigantic egg washes ashore in Japan, having been dislodged from Mothra Island by a hurricane. Two tiny twin girls (sometimes singing like dual-diminutive Dorothy Lamours) from the island come to plead for the return of the egg by the greedy business guys who bought it for a tourist attraction, but to no avail. This pack has the original film of godzilla, theres alote of destruction. Mothra is very large in "Godzilla vs Mothra". This movie was in the 1960's. Minilla wants to get stronger in order to beat Gabara. a little boy named Ichiro helps out him. He now has has courage to fight in his own battles. This is a sequel to "Son of Godzilla" both made in the 1960s's. A sequel to "Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla"...Terror of MechaGodzilla. After King Caesar and Godzilla defeated the metal menace, and three men stoped the aliens, more aliens apeared and rebuiled him, but now a preostoric monster called Titanosaures controlled by a old man's cyborg daughter. And Godzilla has no partner this time to make things equel. but a team that studies the giant dino and discovers its weakness. see what happens next. Rodan's movie is simaler to the first godzilla movie.

The Ultimate Godzilla DVD Collection has five movies. The first film is Godzilla, King Of The Monsters. It is the original movie that brought Godzilla to life on the big screen. Well, the original did not have Raymond Burr in it, but you understand what I mean. Godzilla is a 400 foot high Tyrannosaurus Rex woken up by an atomic bomb test. Only 78 minutes, it isn't that long a movie.
The second film in the set is Godzilla Vs. Mothra. Mothra, a giant moth, wants her giant egg back and is coming to Japan to get it. Yes, I said moth. Tiny twins, greedy businessmen and Godzilla all guest star in this flick. Mothra would go to make her own flicks.
Godzilla's Revenge has a really bad plot but is really just an excuse to show off all those monsters from past films. Just watch it to enjoy seeing Godzilla kicking [...].
Terror Of Mechagodzilla is a great film. Alien invaders try to use a fake Godzilla, damaged from an earlier battle with Godzilla but not forgotten, to take over the Earth and only the real Godzilla can stop them.
Rodan is just a special bonus movie. Flying at supersonic speeds, two giant creatures cause damage to buildings and snap up humans for lunch. Yummy!
This set is just cool to have and a great gift for any Japanese monster fan.

With The exception of Godzilla's Revenge (which is probably the worst Godzilla movie ever!) I couldn't have asked for a better set, especially considering the price. 4 of the 5 are solid films, and did I mention the price!?!
