Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly. --Tom Keogh

Pure entertainment.......2007-05-12
I watch movies simply to be entertained. I don't want to bite my nails and I don't want to be taught a lesson. I just want to escape for a couple of hours. This movie gives me what I want.
Missed some great acting.......2007-05-05
Living Fossil's spouse here. Tommy Lee and Will are not the stars here-it's Vincent D'onofrio as The Bug, an amazing comic and scary performance by a vastly underrated actor, and one of my favorites.
As camp as Rocky Horror, as rompingly satirical as Monty Python; a keeper.......2007-03-24
I'm betting that this little movie will be combed over twenty years from now by film scholars, but in the meantime my wife and I love to watch it again and again, sort of like the way one will watch Casablanca or The African Queen or 2001, A Space Odyssey, or Alien, and a whole lot of others, over and over without getting tired of doing so, while always finding some nuance or angle, or a laugh, missed before.
This is at once a camp put-on of practically every B-grade sci-fi movie of the fifties, while paying reverent homage to the genre, and it cross-references other works, such as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," as mentioned in another review, and the snappy dialogue of a Howard Hawks or Michael Curtiz movie of the forties. You watch it and you will find more.
The quick, witty dialogue and cuteness just add to the fun. Smith and Jones are a terrific stand up comic act, Linda Fiorentino spices it up, Tony Shalhoub might have stolen the show with his sleazy pawn shop owner cameo if it hadn't been for Vincent d'Onofrio as the big bad bug, a show-stopping piece of work if I ever saw one, and then there is Rip Torn in the unlikely role of the uptight Zed. Actually, Barry Sonnenfeld, the director, got fine performances out of his entire cast. It is hard to name one without naming them all, but I'll leave it there. And the music? Well, it's right out of this world, along with the makeup.
We don't buy many DVD's of movies, sticking pretty well to proven classics in the purchases we do make, so you can see what we think of this one; it's a keeper.
A movie worth watching!.......2007-02-19
A very good comedy, Men in Black sheds light on a secret government agency that monitors alien activity.
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Linda Fiorentino (who is HOT!), and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, the music, the humor, and the dialogues are all wonderful!
Overall, it is a movie worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood!
Great movie made even better by Superbit.......2007-02-17
Mr. Jones' and Mr. Smith's chemistry in this movie is remarkable (and Rip Torn and Tony Shalhoub are great, too). I normally avoid buying DVDs of comedies because for me even the best don't always hold up well after repeated viewings (they get stale). This one definitely maintains its freshness.
I was skeptical about the "Superbit" version, given the over-hype of most video and sound technologies, but, since I was able to get it "pre-owned" at a good price, I figured "Why not?". Visually, it's stunning, and the audio is awesome. In the future, if there's a Superbit version of a movie I want to buy, that's the one I'll get.

More remake than sequel, Men in Black II safely repeats everything that made Men in Black the blockbuster hit of 1997. That's fine if you loved the original's fresh humor, weird aliens, and loopy ingenuity, but as sequels go, it's pure déjà vu. Makeup wizard Rick Baker is the only MIB alumnus who's trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The quest of a multitentacled alien--on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle--for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissue-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects--mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the MIB magic has worn a bit thin. --Jeff Shannon

Another weird story.......2007-07-02
Kay is gone, J is looking a partner like Kay. A snake lady shows up, other things happen too.
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Lara Fline, Boyle.
The men should have stayed gone.......2007-06-25
I remember having such high hopes for this movie, but it turned out that the movie trailer had served up all the laughs and the rest of the flick was shockingly dull and un-orginal. But I get it. Sequels are hard and Hollywood are usually a greedy lot. The plot re: returning the Light couldn't have been more campy or paper thin if you tried. But, and it's a big but, it may have worked a little better for children. I'm not sure. I don't have children. Anyhoot, if you have absolutely nothing to do or you're searching for what NOT to do with a sequel, check this film out. Otherwise, watch the first movie and then pretend that this one never happened. Where's a good nuturalizer when you need one?
A Good Sequel.......2007-02-19
A very good comedy, Men in Black II picks up four years after the first movie left off, and continues to shed light on Earth's finest agents. This time the arrival of an unexpected guest from outer space will rock their world...
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Lara Flynn Boyle and Rosario Dawson (both of whom are HOT!), and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, the music, the humor, and the dialogues are all wonderful!
Overall, it is a movie worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood! 4.5 Stars
Where this sequel is strong, it is v-e-r-y strong. Where it is weak, it is v-e-r-y weak........2007-02-17
Mr. Jones and Mr. Smith are back and, IMHO, and their chemistry is as good if not better than in the original (this time IMHO Jones deserved top billing). Rip Torn is given some lines that I'm sure made him wonder if the $$$ he received from being in the second movie was worth the public embarrassment. Tony Shalhoub, on the other hand, is hilarious during the deneuralizer scenes (even though the writers saddled him with stolen lines).
On the other hand, with the exception of Johnny Knoxville as Scrad/Charlie, the villians are downright awful, and, as much as I like Patrick Warburton's other work, his short appearance here was pretty bad.
The Superbit technology doesn't get as many opportunities to shine as in MIB, although it is quite noticeable during the first subway scene and at the end. I'm still impressed enough with Superbit to choose it over other formats, even if I sacrifice the DVD "bonus features" to have it.
Men In BlackU.......2006-12-13
This movie is about two men who must stop aliens from attacking the earth. They are funny and couragousat the same time.I thought the show was exciting because two men fighting aliens.I would recommend this show Men In BlackU because very funny movie.

Two bored businessmen, exiled to a remote company outpost on a six-week business trip, decide to enliven their visit by romancing a deaf woman and then savagely dumping her. Slimy Chad (Aaron Eckhart) convinces schlumphy Howard (Matt Molloy) to take part in the vicious scheme by framing it as an act of revenge against uppity womankind, but it quickly becomes apparent that he harbors some even more sinister motives. What might have been a simple exploration (some, no doubt, would say reiteration) of straightforward misogyny is elevated by the remarkable performance of Eckhart; at once charming and nauseating, his fascinating interpretation of pure competitive evil dominates the film. Neil LaBute's intelligent script is somewhat reminiscent of Whit Stillman's darker moments (minus the collegiate cleverness and zany warmth), and his direction, while rarely visually impressive, does connote the hellish impersonality of corporate interiors with chilling success. The director-screenwriter deserves additional plaudits for resisting both the tidal pull toward poetic justice and the temptation to draw either of his main characters as even slightly sympathetic. A study in ugliness, a rubbernecker's delight, a time bomb. --Miles Bethany
Customer Reviews:
Let's hurt somebody.......2007-05-29
A couple of office buddies, sick of some bad luck with the ladies, devise a sinister plan--find a nice woman and both stomp all over her heart. Just for fun. Oh yes, men are pigs, but this movie is hilarious and horrifying.
There are several occasions where you're placed in the cross-fire of some extremely blunt male conversations. Some of it feels a little forced, but most of their harsh statements and offensive jokes feels like another regular day in the company of men.
The two main players in this game are played by Aaron Eckhart and Matt Malloy. Just like in Thank You for Smoking, Eckart seems like a complete natural for the charismatic but arrogant business exec. Malloy fits in well as his feeble sidekick. They find the perfect victim for their despicable plan--a naive, pretty woman at the office who happens to be deaf. Her handicap adds to the cruelty of their competition.
There is one particular scene in this movie that made me quite uneasy. Eckart demoralizes a young, black employee by challenging him to drop his drawers and prove he has the (guts) to excel in the company. Talk about corporate pressure...
MAJOR SPOILERS-
I have to comment on the ending, because it's what makes this black comedy so brilliant. I was totally suprised by it. But it's actually true to life.
The nice guy finishes last, the girl gets her fragile heart broken, and the bad boy gets what he wants and doesn't learn any life-altering lessons. You don't see that sort of thing in movies very often. But this conclusion is what sets this story apart.
mean guys being mean.......2007-05-14
I was writing a screenplay and struggling to make my characters meaner people. Someone told me to see this movie, and I loved it. These guys are really horrible, it was great. Just when you think they are the worst, they get worse. Great ending, surprises.
Not as good as his later works........2007-03-07
I agree with a review that Roger Ebert gave Your Friends and Neighbors, which was, it was like Quinten Tarantino's Pulp Fiction to his Reservior Dogs. This film is a singular work, not on the scope of Your Friends and Neighbors, and not as good. Some scenes were very good and entertaining, and because of that, surely deserves to be watched. Hopefully if it goes on sale even more. At 20 dollars it would be a good buy. However, I did not find myself drawn into the failures of the characters as much as I was hoping for. So I find myself having to give it 3 stars.
looking at life and love at different angle.......2007-03-02
sometimes is a good thing. there are many people like these three people in real life everywhere. heartless, mindless, cruel, manipulating, demanding...there are people just like these men and woman we are meeting day to day. your boy friend or girl friend may be just like that kind of person. they use people by stabbing people in the back to crawl higher on the corporate ladder. hurting people mercilessly.
don't view this film with your own personal morality standard if it too high, then i simply suggest that you ignore it, don't watch it. if you cannot watch something with an open-minded view, there actually has less stuff you could enjoy except those beautiful, pretty wallpapers on your pc screen.
Ugly and stupid...........2006-10-06
This is one of those typically smug, self satisfied, Generation X 90's films, a film that gleefully shows the dark side of human nature but not in an interesting or an artistic way. It seems LaBute just wanted to show how nasty he could be. Believe me, I am not an overly sensitive, politically correct leftie or anything. I am a deep admirer of Catherine Breillat and Ingmar Bergman, and their films are not very happy. I do not accept the self indulgence which is on display here. This film reminds me of another piece of garbage film called Very Bad Things. Some critics and moviegoers liked that film because they thought it was just a very dark comedy. It wasn't. It was a sadistic, smarmy film that reveled in its cruelty without any intelligence behind it. This film really doesn't feel misogynistic to me. The humiliation of the woman isn't really why I dislike the film so much. It's the attitude towards the audience. It just feels like LaBute just killed something, and is forcing you to watch it over and over again, and he keeps saying "that's the way the world is baby! Hahahaha!". There's a ridiculous scene (which Roger Ebert thought was brilliant for some demented reason) where Aaron Eckhart forces a black employee to drop his pants. There's no point to the scene, and it doesn't even fit in with the rest of the film, just in terms of the narrative. A lot of people compared this film to a Kubrick film, and it is deeply insulting to Kubrick (and to fans of his, of which I include myself). Kubrick's films were injected with an artistry and intelligence that this film sorely lacks. LaBute's next film, Your Friends and Neighbors, was a bit better, but that too had a "shocking" scene in which Jason Patric talked about gleefully raping a man. Don't believe the hype of this film. It's not worth seeing.

Men in Black
--Tom Keogh
Men in Black II
Customer Reviews:
A great movie combo!.......2003-02-27
This is a two movie Gift set containing Men In Black and Men In Black II. Both of these movies in my opinion are awesome.
The first one gets far more of the praise than the second one. It all begins with Agent J being recruited into a top secret organization that deals with alien life forms visiting or dwelling on Earth. They must now save the world from a menacing giant cockroach bug who is bent on getting a special jewel called Orion's Belt. This movie I think broke ground with its twisted humor and it's alien menaces throughout the movie. I almost think of it as a comedic counterpart to the far more dramatic Independence Day.
The second Men In Black movie while not as strong as the first, the second MIB movie deserves more praise than what it has gotten. In this sequel, J and K now come face to face with a nefarious female alien named Serleena who is after The Light Of Zartha and threatens to use it to destroy Earth.
Both of these movies are great and this is a great movie combo set!
i might get it.......2003-02-08
i might get this dvd set if i relly think about it. i dont know.i relly liked the 1st one, but i dont know about the 2nd one.
Great fun.......2003-02-02
This movie is more of a continuation of the first movie than a sequel. Agent J (Will Smith) finds he needs Agent K's (Tommy Lee Jones) expertise on a certain case. But if you seen the first MIB, than you know that K was deactivated and went back to live a "normal" life. The first part of the movie is spent tracking K down and reloading the MIB info into him.
One of the funniest scenes in the movie occur when J finds K running a small post office. You get to see the inside workings of the post office and it just made me laugh out loud.
Laura Flynn Boyle is the "bad guy" in this flick and she finds out something I've always suspected - you _could_ rule the world if you look like a "Victoria's Secret" model.
The extras on the dvd show how various creatures were made, deleted scenes and of course, various bloopers. This movie is not going to make you think harder about life but it is an enjoyable way to spend an evening. If you looking for great fun and you enjoyed the first "Men in Black", this is an excellent choice for you. Watch and laugh - laughter is supposed to be the best medicine.

It's a bug-a-boo.......2006-05-28
People go through life oblivious to the reality around them. As pointed out in this movie, at one time everyone knew the world was flat; and now everyone knows we are alone in the universe. But what if we are wrong? Who will protect us? "Men in black used to be the term for the bad guys. This movie shows they are our last line of defense. This is a fun movie and there are many great actors to add to the fun.
Every one is so busy watching Tommy Lee Jones make his stoic looks and Will making one-liners that they miss the person that hold it all together. In addition, that person has to do act throughout the movie in an Edgar suit. Have you ever tried one on? Vincent D'Onofrio has to look unnatural and act natural. This was one movie where I felt sorry for the bug. He even drops his snack (Linda Fiorentino) near the end. It just shows that bugs lead a hard life.
If you are into recent bug movies, look for "Out There" where they mention bugs in a rug

Description
The Superbit titles utilize a special high bit rate digital encoding process which optimizes video quality while offering a choice of both DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. These titles have been produced by a team of Sony Pictures Digital Studios video, sound and mastering engineers and comes housed in a special package complete with a 4 page booklet that contains technical information on the Superbit process. By reallocating space on the disc normally used for value-added content, Superbit DVDs can be encoded at double their normal bit rate while maintaining full compatibility with the DVD video format.
