An ultracreepy blend of horror and fantasy (think of it as Beauty and the Bugs) from Mexican director Guillermo del Toro (Cronos) about giant cockroaches in the subway tunnels beneath Manhattan. Like its DNA-altered spawn (the title refers to the way some insects evolve to resemble their predators), Mimic is not your everyday bug picture, but a more poetic (though quite gruesome) sort of film, literally crawling with bizarre, striking images. In this case, the mutant bugs are not the result of evil atomic experiments (as in Them!), but are the unexpected side effect of work done by an entomologist (Mira Sorvino) and her Center for Disease Control officer husband (Jeremy Northam), who, in a last-ditch effort to control a roach-carried disease epidemic that was killing children, released a genetically altered form of sterile cockroaches beneath the city. They stopped the virus, but... Also starring Charles Dutton, Giancarlo Giannini, F. Murray Abraham, and Josh Brolin. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Mimic (1997).......2006-01-01

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, Alexander Goodwin, Giancarlo Giannini, Charles Dutton, Josh Brolni, Alix Koromzay, F. Murray Abraham, James Costa.
Running Time: 105 minutes
Rated R for terror/violence and language.

"Mimic", like all great genre pictures, exists comfortably in two spheres: on the simple level, it speedily entertains as a gory fright film imbued with mordant humor; on the more difficult level, it provides symbolism and thematic undertow. Best of all, these two levels often work at the same time, such as when an old priest gets tossed off a building by one of the creatures, plummeting past a neon "Jesus Saves" sign, and crashing to a gory death on the pavement. A little while later, the creature drags the dead body into the gaping black maw of an open sewer. The latter is what "Mimic" is really really for: the importance of breeding and offspring. The movie's surreal opening, with its rows of linen-canopied hospital beds all in a row like so many little coffins, shows us sick children, gasping for air because a cockroach-borne disease is carrying them off. The battle lines are drawn in the first few moments: Us versus Them. Scientists Mia Sorvino and Jeremy Northam glean the cure for the dread disease by concocting a genetically-altered bug whose secretions kill off the diseased cockroaches; "Judas Breed", as it's called, will be the only true breed this couple will engender: Sorvino fails pregnancy tests at home, while their creature, supposedly unable to reproduce, grows apace underneath Manhattan's fallopian sewers. It merely seems like "nature's way" that the Judas Breed has mutated to the size of six feet, and can mimic standing upright like their human prey, It's also fitting that these creatures instinctively hone in on the vulnerability of children: they viciously rip apart two kids, and befriend another who has managed to communicate with them by clicking soup-spoons together.

This is an atmospheric thriller from Guillermo del Toro, director of "The Devil's Backbone" and "Cronos", who manages to mix great direction with good old fashioned monster horror to great effect. The concept itself is clever, even if the idea of bugs evolving to look very like humans is a little fa-fetched; however, once the action moves to the subway the fact that the bugs are clearly lethal no matter what they look like, makes this less important. The film is quite short and makes the action come quicker and seem more urgent. Several people get killed by the bug that wouldn't usually get killed in this sort of horror (children for example), this is very effective as it is quite scary to see the unexpected happen. The mood is dark throughout and Del Toro uses the sewers and subway to great effect, creating a real sense of claustrophobia, like the humans have entered the bug's world and not the other way round. The bugs are shown early on in the film - usually not a good idea (keep it hidden in the "Jaws" way), but here the special effects are good enough to make the bug really believable, yet the horror is not in seeing the bugs but in they way they hunt and kill, but the fear is in what could happen. The cast are great, Sorvino especially is very good in the lead. Jeremy Northam and Charles S. Dutton are good in support and Abraham Murray adds a bit of cameo class (though his role is quite unnecessary). The director is the real star, adding some genuine scares and real mood to a film that could have easily been just another creature-feature that goes straight to video and straight to the back of your mind. Overall a superior creature horror film.

5 out of 5 stars Smart movie, goes over most reviewer's heads........2005-10-16

Mimic is an extremely smart movie that respects the intelligence of its audience, and that may be its greatest downfall.
I won't go into the atmosphere and effects, allo of which are excellent. The other reviews here pretty much cover that gambit to good effect. It's a great horror flick, crawling with the sort of subtle and interesting touches that give good movies that 'something extra'.
My peeve isn't with the movie itself, but rather with the "dumbed-down" advertising and descriptions that lead to all sorts of miscomprehensions in reviews, not to mention a couple of bad sequels that took off in a very-wrong direction.
If one were to read and accept these reviews, and had any understanding of genetics or evolution, they'd be prone to dismiss the movie off-hand. Don't make that mistake. The story simply went over their head.
This isn't a dumb monster flick. Much the opposite, it's so smart the copywriters and reviewers didn't "get" some of its more intelligent aspects.

Just see it!

5 out of 5 stars Beauty and the Bugs.......2005-07-12

Not bad for a Mexican director I'm impress. This movie has giant mutant cockroaches living in the subways of New York their always killing people cause of them being attractive to human blood if a human put the cockroaches blood all over him they won't attack that human. These bugs are big all cause of an entomologist name Mira Sorvino and her husband. In order to kill all the bugs they have to kill the male he's the king.

3 out of 5 stars Nice concept, Above average movie.......2005-05-16

The idea of a genetic mutation miscalculation which leads to the higher evolution of insects to adopt human ways is not impossible. Del Toro took a very X-file-ish theme and created a very enjoyable sci-fi thriller. The movie was very fast paced and both the horror and suspense elements were done just right, not too little and not too overdone.

A few things I didn't like about this film was some of its more subtle things. Mira Sorvino was playing an entomologist, yet when she studies or investigate specimens, she takes no logical safety precautions. The same recklessness occurs repeatedly for her and every other cast throughout movie. Things like touching bugs that likely carry unknown diseases with your bare hands, or when they go underground to hunt for the roaches without any type of scientific or safety equipments is just very illogical to me. To think that in the beginning of the movie, the city undergone a catastrophic epidemic that were spread by roaches and for them to go on the rest of the movie every time without any planning or taking precaution is just unthinkable. The plot was nicely written and the story flowed well, but the reckless actions from supposedly "experts" just kills it. It doesn't just happen once or twice, but every single time. A number of scenes also seemed very forced and felt like they were put there just so the story can continue the way the director wanted, yet they made no logical sense.

Despite the few imperfections, this movie is still a great watch. I definitely recommend a rental if you are looking for a nice action thriller to kill a saturday night.

5 out of 5 stars Life will Find a Way.......2005-04-24

That quote from JURASSIC PARK always comes to mind in films like MIMIC.
A scientist finds a way to beat a horrible disease crippling and killing children, but the method used is not fully thought through. One senior geneticist is ignored, and the JUDAS bug is implemented. And what they have done is accelerate the genetic process by many thousands of generations in a short space of time ... in a species that was engineered to "die out".
The acting is top notch, casting has people perfect for the role, and this stellar cast delivers in spades.

ENJOY.

3 out of 5 stars Don't be so hard on it!.......2005-03-31

Ok, the style of the first two films in the trilogy was really cool. Very dark and moody. The style of this one doesn't remain consistent with the frist 2, but it's just as good I think. There are alot of close ups, it's hard to describe. Don't compare this to big budget films. All horror fans will be pleased to see that Lance Henriksen who happens to be a B-Movie actor now, makes an appearence as a sort of bad guy? I guess. I think that watching some of the special features will help you to respect a movie better, and I'm not sure if there's a commentary or anything, but I've talked to the director alot over e-mail and he's a really nice guy. He has written the stories for the Splinter Cell games and is currently writing the movie, so if you don't like him for this, than like him for that.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All.......2005-01-08

Despite all the bad reviews of this movie I have read, I actually found it to be a pretty good film. I mean, in some parts it may have been slightly lethargic, but over all, I found it to be a good film. The actors all did a very good job--they all have a lot of talent. I actually bought the film before I had even seen it, because my favourite actress played Carmen. I had heard bad reviews of the film, but I have never been one to rely on other people's judgement of films, because I usually enjoy films that get bad reviews. I guess you just have to be the right kind of person, because a great deal of the film does revolve around Marvin looking through his camera and taking pictures. If you haven't seen it, you should probably not buy it until you have, because like I said, you may have to be the type of person who enjoys most films as a whole. I guess it takes a real appreciation of the art.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst horror films I have ever seen!!!.......2005-01-02

Speechlessly disappointed!!! Why made a film so messy like this!!!

3 out of 5 stars Do what I tell you.......2004-11-10

Remember when you found that porno mag in the abandoned shack out in the woods behind yer house, remember that dirty feeling and how you scrubbed yer hands for hours. That's kinda how I felt when I saw the first Mimic in the theater. It was so bad it was criminal. Poor Roc and Mighty Aphrodite, how would you like to come off of a career making Woody Allen film and be known for Mimic.
That aside, Mimic 2 was one of those TBS flicks that you pass by on a sickly sunday morning nursing a headache and a gin. You are not sure if you are going to be sick and if you are then you have better things to watch out for then this blasted flickering on the TV.
Mimic Sentinels is as close to a real movie as I never thought you could get with 8 ft. cockroaches. Now don't get me wrong, there is no hybrid romantic comedic interlude with the line, "Now that bugs me" though there shoulda been. It's a straight forward, well shot, and paced little homage to two of our favorite things, Hitchcock and B-creature flicks. The actors were great, the characters were off the wall and inventive that gave the movie a strange feeling of completeness, you could have shot the movie without "The Garbageman" but then...what would be the point. I think this movie will be greatly appreciated by two types of people. Those that thought the first MIMICS were trash, and those that don't know there were a first two. I fer one just have to feign ignorance.
If you are in the mood, for a decent, (weak word), good (sounds better) direct to video release this is it. Shotguns, blood and enough content to keep yer significant other amused and maybe he/she won't think yer so dumb. Like the time you took him/her to see Demolition Man in the theatre....How did it last so long?
Buy it.

2 out of 5 stars Demise of the Series: No Scare, No Logics, and Fewer Bugs.......2004-10-20

'Mimic Sentimel' is the result of mixing two kind of films -- look how Marvin, a patient confined in a room, watching through a camera the people living in the opposite apartment, AND how he gets invloved with a series of death by the killing human-bugs.

While spending time taking photos of the outside, Marvin and his sister Rosie come to think they have witnessed a murder, and call the police. The standard plot device means that the cop would not believe in the story, or at least remain sceptical, and the thrill continues. In this movie, inspted of that, the cop starts to have a date with Marvin's mom (Amanda Plummer). Do you think we need this kind of plot development?

Anyway, after while the story strays into the alley, another girl comes into the room, named Carmen, and the two become Nancy Drew-like amateur detectives, and there is a strange man nicknamed 'The Garbageman' (Lance Henriksen, 'AVP' and many others).

But you don't see Grace Kelly here, nor Hitchcock's assured hand as director. The film suffers from a very disjointed script, which doesn't know how to scare, or even amuse us. The bad construction of the filmed shots only lead to the confused impression on our side -- actually, we don't know exactly whether some of the characters are killed or not, or how got killed. The bad acting from the leads only lessen the scare, and first of all, you don't see the lethal bug itself very much.

The only good thing is the photography that captured the creepy mood of the backyard of a decayed apartment. But the film is another disappointment from Dimention Films that once gave us 'Scream.' And someone please send e-mail address of Tarantino to Amanda Plummer, who was in the epoch-making 'Pulp Fiction.' (You remember that terrific diner scene, don't you?)

The original Mimic aspired to evoke a mood and tension akin to classic horror films like the original versions of The Mummy or Frankenstein--to create the kind of dream imagery that lingers in the brain for months after. This may seem like a high ambition for a movie about giant predatory bugs that learned to roughly imitate the appearance of human beings, but Mimic was more successful than you'd expect. And so is Mimic 2, a movie with much simpler goals--Mimic 2 just wants to be a lean, effective horror flick that capitalizes on the inherent creepiness of insects. A schoolteacher named Remi (Alix Koromzay, previously seen in Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return and the remake of The Haunting) has trouble with men, but not half as much trouble as they end up having with her; every guy she's recently dated has been killed and had his face sheared off. Before too long, her school has a serious infestation of giant mutant cockroaches. By the end, the story is full of holes--but Mimic 2 does a smart job of delaying any explanation for a long time while building some compelling eeriness and successful jolts. The special effects are sparingly used and surprisingly good when they do appear; Koromzay and costar Bruno Campos are engaging presences. All in all, worth checking out. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Bad Horror = Mimic 2.......2006-03-09

This movie takes the cool concepts of Mimic, and then abuses, burns and trashes all the scary moments the first movie brought us.

This movie is slightly worse than watching an ant hill in the summer. if that is your idea of fun - then enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars next best to mimic.......2005-08-19

it was great because it continue to the next eveluation. the end leaves you thinking what will happen next.

3 out of 5 stars Cool Sequel.......2005-03-31

If you enjoyed the style of the first film like I did, there's more to go around in this sequel. Some people like to compare this type of movie to movies like The Matrix or other big budget modern sci-fi movies like that, but what they really need to do is watch the Sci-Fi channel and compare it to some of the **** movies that they call in pride "Sci Fi Pictures Originals". If I was running the channel I'd want to get my channel name as far away from those pictures as possible especially if they don't really make them, which Sci-Fi doesn't. Anyway, Mimic 2 is a true sequel picking up with the story of Remy, a minor character from the first movie. She's a teacher and attracts the attention of a single Judas Breed bug who is in all seriousness attracted to her. They don't really elaborate on this as much as they should have, but the Bug thinks she's some sort of Queen because she has alot of kids around her at school. A very cool monster/character angle is the addition of the new "evolution" of the bug. It can really mimic humans alot better than last time, and gets jealous of men that get close to her, whether they be on business terms, or for other reasons ;). But, the bug doens't know the difference, so he just kills everyone anyway, including my favorite character who always dies in every movie..almost. So, if you liked the style of the first movie you'll probably enjoy this, because it's played up to the extreme. The DVD is alright for a V release also, actually featuring interviews and some special effects segments and deleted scenes. Cool.

3 out of 5 stars direct-to-video movie that doesn't try to be more than it is.......2005-01-26

I saw Mimic in the movie theaters and enjoyed it. The original plot: scientists in the near future genetically engineer bugs to stop an infestation of plague-spreading cockroaches. They called them "Mimics" because they mimicked the behavior of the roaches and were able to infiltrate their nests.

Fast-forward a few years and the Mimics have gotten out of hand. Instead of being sterile, they reproduced. And instead of just being able to mimic bugs, they are now giant-sized beetles that have an outer shell that looks a lot like a guy in an overcoat wearing a hat. In short, the Mimics started hunting us.

There was way too much religious symbolism in the first movie for my tastes (from stigmata to calling the bugs "Judas breed"), but it was a sci fi film that aimed high even if it didn't always hit the mark. Mimic 2, a direct-to-video sequel, aims low and hits its mark anyway.

A minor character from the first film, Remi (Alix Koromzay), comes back as a hard-working redheaded schoolteacher who just wants to settle down with a nice guy in a soundstage-version of New York. She has a tough time though, mostly because she seems to like bugs a little too much and talks about them a lot.

What, you don't remember Remi from the first film? Neither do I. She was part of the CDC though, so we can assume she's fallen on hard times when we see Remi traipsing through the crumbling halls of a soon-to-be-condemned school teaching weird little freaky kids that talk about being insects and killing happy families.

Remi's life is interrupted by a series of killings, all of them involving men who have their faces torn off. The handsome Officer Klaski (Bruno Campos) enters to investigate and tolerates Remi's rambling about insects just enough to create something of a spark between them.

Mimic 2 doesn't hit you over the head with the plot, which is unfortunate because sometimes you need a good whack to understand what might be obvious to the director. Apparently, there is a Mimic from the original hive (you're shocked, I know) that's attempting to build a new hive right in the condemned schoolhouse. We're supposed to infer all of this from Remi's conversations about a single soldier ant who is the last of his kind to die "without a queen."

The rules of foreshadowing demand that we understand this to mean a few things: 1) that there's just one Mimic left, 2) that it's a soldier, 3) that it's looking for a queen. If you don't catch this little dialogue and interpret it correctly, the movie doesn't really explain itself much further. In fact, there's a scene that hit the cutting room floor that's on the DVD that explains everything. Without it the movie grasps at straws.

But what about the face ripping? Here's a quote from The Thing to help you out: "Man is the warmest place to hide."

That said, there are lots of surprises, shocks, and twists in the movie. The director (Jean de Segonzac) is competent and the writing (Joel Soisson) is well done. Unfortunately, the movie seems to have bad timing. In at least two scenes, the movie gives itself away too early-by about 10 seconds in each case. What the lone Mimic soldier is doing and what it plans to do is quite sinister, but pulling off the surprise twist requires careful timing, which this movie lacks. De Segonzac has directed TV, mostly, so maybe that's part of the problem.

The characters are a mixed bag. Remi's suitably quirky, although a little TOO quirky at times. The guys she dates rate high on the creep-o-scale, a fact that of course guarantees they will all die horrible, faceless deaths. The two kids Remi struggles to protect (Nicky played by Wil Estes and Sal played by Gaven Lucas) are really one-dimensional but are suitable foils for Remi's motherly instincts. Detective Klaski is well done, as is the government agent who competes with him to exterminate the bug. When Detect Klaski encounters the Mimic, he empties his entire gun into it, grabs a gun from his ankle holster, and fires the rest of that too. Now THAT'S what a normal cop would do when faced with a giant bug!

Not that it helps. Fortunately, the special effects are sparsely used. There are occasional computer graphics, but for the most part the bug is a rubber suit just off screen. We never see it in good lighting; a good thing too, given that when we do see the big bug it looks like a guy in a suit. The director works with what he's got and uses it sparingly.

The ending is the big payoff, but your reaction to it will really depend on your perspective of the film throughout. If you think the idea of a bug taking the role of a serial killer and stalker is preposterous, the ending is so ridiculously absurd that it's just plain comical. If you think the idea of a big bug flying around trying to stick its ovipositor in your gut is disturbing, then the ending will keep you awake at night. It's all a bit misogynistic, actually, but then most stalker movies are.

Koromzay is no Mira Sorvino, but she does okay. There's a cut scene where a creepy cigarette-smoking guy who sits in the stairwell of the building explains how Remi is an "average-looking chick that guys think they have a chance with," which explains why she has so many problems. That's sums up the movie too...it knows it's a direct to video sequel and doesn't try to be more than it is.

3 out of 5 stars Fun low-budget sequel.......2004-07-04

I found this movie was much better than expected. But you've got to take it for what it is, a genre b-movie.
Ok, so maybe the police detective character is a tired cliché played by an uninspired actor, and maybe the heroine is a bit too weird (the emotional photo-collage thing), and the movie could have benefited of a bigger budget. But still, the plot's main gimmick is inventive and works, overall entertaining, with some slightly scary moments, and the visual effects are good.
I don't know, I had fun watching it and didn't feel insulted. To give you some reference, I think 'Species 2' is a laughably bad sequel, and I find the original 'Species' very overrated. So I guess I don't fall for every sci-fi movie out there.
The dvd is anamorphic widescreen.

    ENJOY.

      ENJOY.

This movie is slightly worse than watching an ant hill in the summer. if that is your idea of fun - then enjoy.

it was great because it continue to the next eveluation. the end leaves you thinking what will happen next.
