Product Description
It is an ordinary summer day. But then, without warning, something very extraordinary happens. Enormous shadows fall across the land. Strange atmospheric phenomena, ominous and mesmerizing, surface around the globe. All eyes turn upward. The question of whether we're alone in the universe has finally been answered. And, in a matter of minutes, the lives of every person across the globe are forever changed. With the fate of our planet at stake, the Fourth of July is about to take on an entirely new meaning. No longer will it be an American holiday. It will be known as the day the entire world fought back. The day we did not go gentle into the good night... The day all of us on planet Earth celebrated our independence day.

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Just a little anxious to get up there and whoop E.T...........2007-07-03

This movie as off the charts with the special effects. Not to mention some of the best lines in any movie of the decade in which it was made.

Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith, Adam Baldwin, Judd Hirsh, Bill Pullman, Mary McDonnell, Vivica A. Fox, Harry Connick Jr., Brent Spiner and an ensemble cast too numerous to name have come together to create an "end of the world" story that triumphs in the spirit of the American Revolution. (And on July 4th nonetheless).

I'll never forget these words from the president's young daughter...

    "Is mommy sleeping now?"

    Yes, Mommy's sleeping.

if that exchange did not make you cry, you have no heart.

4 out of 5 stars This movie has Hollywood written all over it but it's all good........2007-07-02

The movie trailer shows a picture of the White House...all of a sudden, its blown into smithereens by a laser blast!!! But then again the jacket to this disc also shows that also.

This popcorn flick was all that I hoped for, nothing but 100% of everything: action, drama, humor and suspense. Many people are justified in stating that the success of "Independence Day" comes from the fact that its nothing more than what its intended to be: FUN, period. However, in this day and age of constant threats to modern society from epidemics such as war and disease, "Independence Day" can suddenly mean more than just a cinematic escape from reality. Perhaps it symbolizes the power and determination of the human spirit to prevail against all odds. Well, I most certainly think so! Just observe the plot and you'll find out what I mean:

Several gigantic UFOs, dwarfing anything which mankind can possibly conceive, suddenly hover above major cities all over the world. Without warning, these alien ships simultaneously strike the heart of the cities with awesome laser beams, causing vast proportions of horrific destruction. Just when it seems that all is lost for the citizens of the Planet Earth, a courageous band of human rebels join forces to combat this seemingly impregnable terror. These rebels come from all walks of life, from the dead serious to the outrageously funny. You've got Will Smith, a fighter pilot with a mouth of a wise guy but having a heart of gold; Jeff Goldblum, the computer nerd who knows how to decode the alien bad guys; and Bill Pullman, the dedicated U.S. president who will stop at nothing to preserve the survival of the human race. Put them together and you have a trinity (respectively the heart, mind and soul) of the ultimate good guys to rally "mankind," a word as Pullman in the film eloquently states, "should have a new meaning to us all."

The spirit of this movie owes much to past multi-character disaster classics such as "Earthquake." If you are an avid fan of sci-fi flicks, the content and material of "Independence Day" might be familiar territory for you, but it's a treat to watch nonetheless.

So, do you feel the need to ignite that "fighting human spirit" in you? Then its time to place this on your cart or rush to your nearest video store and celebrate your "Independence Day!"

    1 out of 5 stars I hated this movie.......2007-05-31

This movie sucked big time. It was so Over the Top. One man takes on the galaxy with help from the President and a guy flying a crop duster. Gimme a break. Also, this movie sports some of the worst one liners.

    5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2007-05-15

I'm not usually one for action and too much excitement but this movie was exciting and funny and had a great message to it. I loved the movie and I think you probably will too.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining annual event.......2007-05-12

We have been watching this movie almost yearly since we saw it the first time shortly after it came out. We had a vcr version and watched it in our travel trailer. Now with the dvd, we have introduced it to our youngest grandson. For him it is a change from his normal space adventure. And he loves it too.

I'm not usually one for action and too much excitement but this movie was exciting and funny and had a great message to it. I loved the movie and I think you probably will too.

We have been watching this movie almost yearly since we saw it the first time shortly after it came out. We had a vcr version and watched it in our travel trailer. Now with the dvd, we have introduced it to our youngest grandson. For him it is a change from his normal space adventure. And he loves it too.

      Amazon.com essential video

--Tom Keogh

If you're looking to really learn the French language, as opposed to briefly memorizing a few phrases to help you find a bathroom or complain to the doctor of your traveler's stomach, the Standard Deviants have the video for you. Their French, Part I is a language lesson for the MTV generation. Short segments, funky graphics, and personable, youthful teachers make watching this tape entertaining, rather like Sesame Street for grownups. Using the "functional approach," making sure people can communicate and accomplish tasks in the new language, the video introduces French with phrases and full sentences, presenting ideas through demonstration. The point is to help you think in French. Dialogue is clearly transcribed on the screen, so you can see what the words look like, and two cards included with the tape give translations of some of the dialogues and useful vocabulary. Note, though, that all of the explanations are given in English, as opposed to an immersion program (meaning all in French, including explanations) such as French in Action. Which style works best is purely a matter of personal preference. Skits put the conversations into context and provide levity. Yet, as is clearly stated in the beginning of the lesson, this series is intended to be a supplement to a class, and French really needs to be practiced through speaking and writing. The benefit, though, of video is you can rewind as much as needed to master pronunciation and to let the concepts sink in. The tape opens with pronunciation, with close-ups of faces as they pronounce the alphabet to help you learn how to shape your mouth around the French letters. It then covers a range of topics including -er verbs, gender, articles, adverbs, être, adjectives, pronouns, avoir, numbers, aller, and faire. While the video could benefit from more native French speakers, this is a delightful introduction to the language, and a fun complement to a high school or college French class. Don't miss the flubbed lines during the credits. French, Part 2 is also available. --Jenny Brown

      5 out of 5 stars Parlez-vous Francais - The Basics.......2007-03-18

This is the best language tape I've ever used! It cuts a language down to the basics and uses an approach much like Sesame Street. It makes any language fun to learn.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good intro.......2007-03-01

I've been watching these tapes with a friend, having never had any French before. Yes, they do go through things fast, but I go back and review again and I haven't found that to be a problem. Yes, it's extremely corny, but it can be taken as camp and it adds a little levity in my opinion. The emphasis on pronounciation is extremely helpful, since that's the main thing a book can't do for you. You'll definitely need to supplement this with something else but it is well worth the $5.

2 out of 5 stars If you're a beginner, this DVD is NOT for you........2006-03-07

If you recently decided that you would like to learn French, this DVD is not for you. They FLY through the material. Even when they want you to repeat after a presenter they still go fast! I noticed that I kept rewinding the video to try and make sense of what they just presented. It was so annoying having to rewind constantly! The beginning of the video discloses that the DVD is a supplement to classroom study. If you ask me, they need to put this disclosure (in flashing neon lights) on the cover and product description because by no means will you learn anything from this video without prior classroom experience.

In summary, if you're just starting to learn French this DVD is not for you. If you already know the French language and want to brush up on your skills, this DVD might suit you well.

I'm really glad I was able to rent this DVD (through Blockbuster Online) before I made the mistake of buying it.

My search for a good instructional French DVD continues...

4 out of 5 stars My students LOVE this!.......2005-08-26

I am a middle school French teacher. I have been reading the reviews for this video and had to respond. If you are a complete novice at French, do not get this video. However, if you are a student or have taken French in the past, this is a great tool to help you refresh or just to explain things a little differently. My students love watching this video. I show it in little pieces based upon what we are currently studying. They ask to watch it over and over again, even months later! I highly recommend this video as an accessory to any French program!

2 out of 5 stars Too annoying to be helpful.......2005-02-26

I fortunately rented this dvd before purchasing and I would highly recommend that others do this as well. Some reasons I would not recommend purchasing this DVD:
      1. Non-native speakers. They do speak slowly & clearly, but it's with a non-native accent, that's not going to help much if you plan to actually go to France.
      2. Too much grammar instruction. Explaining the grammar rules to me doesn't help nearly as much as hearing it used in context. Too much explanation not enough repetition.
      3. Lame lame lame attempts at humor & conversation. It didn't bother me that much the first time through, but in order to actually learn the material one needs to rewind and go over the same sections repeatedly. I couldn't stand it. Humor is absolutely a personal-preference thing, so you'll have to see for yourself if you find it annoying.
      4. Not enough conversation, not enough French. There are only a handful of conversations in French to listen to & repeat. They do a LOT of talking in English. I would prefer much more exposure to the actual language.

Overall, I didn't find this DVD very helpful. I second the suggestion to watch DVDs you already own using the French language options (if available). You'll pick things up in context.

5 out of 5 stars THEY DO NOT COME IN PEACE..........2006-09-05

This is a sensational, sci-fi, alien invasion, action film with a terrific cast and superlative special effects. Alien invaders suddenly darken the skyline across the world, as city sized flying saucers hover ominously over major cities world wide. A computer geek, David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), figures out how the alien ships are communicating with each other and realizes the import of what he has discovered. He manages to have an audience with President Whitmore (Bill Pullam), as his ex-wife is one of the president's top aides, and tells the president of his findings. Wonder at the alien saucer spectacle turns to terror, as the meaning of the ships in the sky becomes clear.

The White House evacuates just in time, as the aliens launch a world wide attack in complete synchronization, an awesome spectacle that enthralls the viewer. A counter attack is launched, led by fighter pilot Captain Steve Hiller (Will Smith), which ends in disaster for the fighter pilots, as only Hiller survives to fight another day. He manages, however, to bring in a captive. Notwithstanding the gravity of the premise of the film, there are moments of comic relief interspersed throughout.

Meanwhile, our computer geek, realizing why the counter attack failed, comes up with a solution, one that requires nerves of steel and a desire to walk on the wild side. A second counter attack is launched world wide, which leads to some terrific action scenes and heroics by a most unlikely candidate. Naturally, mankind is victorious. It is not the victory itself, however, but what leads up to the victory that makes the film so entertaining.

This is a fast paced film with a myriad of subplots and coincidental pairings that may stretch the viewer's credence but do not take away from the enjoyment of the film. The special effects are dazzling. The cast is excellent. Will Smith is charming and funny throughout. Bill Pullam is appropriately presidential, and Jeff Goldblum is a most convincing computer geek. Look for fine performances from the stellar supporting cast: Mary McConnell, Robert Loggia, Margaret Colin, Randy Quaid, Judd Hirsch, James Rebhorn, Harry Connick, Jr., and Harvey Fierstein. All in all, this is a marvelous film.

Be prepared for an unintended poignant moment in the film, when the camera pans to the New York skyline and the viewer sees the World Trade Center twin towers standing proud and tall on the horizon. It is a moment that gives the viewer pause in remembrance of what was. It is, indeed, a moment to remember.

      5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2006-08-28

Peter Cincotti is a great pianist and singer; his voice is full of emotion and very sexy. I am so amazed at his arrangements, especially the upbeat "I Love Paris"; I can never sit still and always feel like dancing. From fast songs to slow songs, he draws me in. It doesn't hurt that he's charismatic and quite dashing as well. His band is also superb and beyond awesome. I wish there were more interviews on the DVD, but I would recommend it absolutely.

Sometimes you bought a DVD hoping a great sound.
Sometimens you ger some DVD hoping a great hi rez image.
In this one I hope for both and I didn't get none.
Boring, easy listening, fully marketing oriented.
      The image is too lighting.
      Forget about it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Natural.......2006-03-15

Peter Cincotti has continued to grow as a performer of tremendous natural talent and great ability. His easy, engaging style makes him a singer and pianist that you will want to enjoy again and again.

5 out of 5 stars The moon is a swinging place thanks to Peter Cincotti.......2006-02-23

What a joy it is to watch Peter Cincotti and his band on this great DVD "Live in New York"! Peter breathes new life into the songs from both his debut album as well as his most recent release, "On The Moon" which is included with the DVD. You can hear the Ray Charles influence on "The Girl I Knew". So much so that I was certain it was one of "The Genius"'s songs! What a pleasant surprise to learn that the song was written by Peter himself! The performances are nothing short of excellent. I guarantee, "A Night in Tunisia" will leave you speechless! In this world of lip sync and lackluster deliveries of songs, Peter Cincotti is like a fine glass of Cabernet after far too many years of grape juice. And like Caberbet, he will contiue to grow better with time.

4 out of 5 stars Cincotti Swings Under The Stars.......2006-02-14

I ordered this without really knowing what to expect -- a 'live' concert recording perhaps? -- but the final product did not disappoint.

I've been a fan of Peter's music since his debut album release, and caught his performances at a showcase in Singapore followed by a Rome concert a few months later.

His Live In New York DVD features a comprehensive collection of all his famous works, from I Changed The Rules to Sway to St. Louis Blues and On The Moon. Filmed outdoors on a small neighbourhood street in NYC, it starts off in the day, then mellows into a beautiful sunset, before picking up the tempo as the stars emerge.

Lots of great energy here, as Peter jams with his excellent band and displays obvious enjoyment in his mega-watt smiles and rhythmic head-bopping. The sound quality on this high-definition disc is amazing, so make sure you watch it in the evening in a nice, quiet setting for maximum enjoyment.

I especially love his performances of Sway, You Don't Know Me and The Girl I Knew ( the last a bonus track and as yet unreleased ).

Guaranteed to satisfy all Peter Cincotti fans adequately. But I'm still hoping for a proper concert recording in the near future. An appreciative 'live' audience would be the icing on the cake.

        4 out of 5 stars It's good fun. Enjoy........2005-12-31

To someone that gave it one star and would wonder how "the masses" think this movie is good: Since SO MANY people like this movie and YOU don't, did you ever stop to think that it may be YOU who is wrong on this one?

Look, I'll give you the fact that it's not a deep, meaningfull, piece of art. But if you go into watching it that way, then you've got the problem.

If you saw a preview, the ads make it perfectly clear: this is a movie where aliens come down and blow suff up. PERIOD. duh.

Yes, we don't really care about the characters (espescially the kid in the baseball cap - I think that character is a movie pre-requisite, even though it's so annoying). Yes, the story is simple and in many cases predictable. But you don't go on a roller coaster ride because the seats are comfortable.

Stuff blows up. Stuff blows up a lot. And it is good. It's pure mindless fun. If that's not "mature" enough for you, then you would bewrong to think that it would be. You don't turn on a rock and roll radio station hoping to hear Beethoven.

By the way, to all of those who are reading this: All the other reviews on this movie are POSITIVE. Except for that one guy. Just for the fun of it, go see all his other reviews. Guess what?!? He hates EVERYTHING! 7 out of 7 movies! He even goes so far as to give ID4 a bad review two different times! Plus, notice how all of the movies he reviews and doesn't like fall into the mindless fun thrillride catagory. Who would listen to a guy who hates these kinds of movies but takes the time to watch them and review them?!?

If MILLIONS of people around the world like this movie but one does not (and they don't like any movies of these kind), then they're the ones who don't get it.

Buy it. It's innexpensive here on Amazon. You'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A classic film in its time..................2005-11-06

"Independence Day" has to be one of my favourite movies of all time. The story is about aliens invading our sordid planet but the director has a deeper meaning in store for us in this classic film. For example, when the President of the United States was giving encouragement to the people of the world, he said that he demands independence not just for America but for the whole world from the aliens. His speech of world unity in the face of catastrophic crisis is an inspiration for world peace. Moreover, the use of nuclear weapons in this film is a reminder to the viewers that weapons of mass destruction can be useful if used correctly. The film "Deep Impect" also gives the audience a similar view.

Lastly, the comic element of this film brings about a sense of comedy in this 'serious' message the film is trying to convey to the viewres. Will Smith's acting is superb as usual and I would definitely recommend this film to UFO fans and fans of Will Smith. A MUST watch.

        1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2004-12-03

Along with Reign of Fire and Star Wars ep1&2, this is the worst sci-fi film in the past 10 years.

The worst thing about it is that the masses think its good (there are lots of them out there after all) - but if you've got any taste, you'll hate it!!!

Stay clear of this tat - you have been warned!!!

        5 out of 5 stars A DAY TO REMEMBER..........2004-08-31

The quality of this two disc DVD is superlative with crystal clear visuals and great sound quality. The letterbox format offers both the theatrical release version and the special edition version from which to choose. The special edition version offers an extra nine minutes of restored footage. The second disc offers a myriad of features, including an interesting thirty minute documentary on the making of the film. All in all, this two disc DVD is a terrific value and well worth having in one's collection.
