The ocean liner Britannic was the sister ship of the Titanic, and it suffered a similar, though far less celebrated, fate, sinking quickly in the Mediterranean during World War I. The mysterious circumstances of the Britannic's demise, in which an unexplained explosion ripped a huge hole in its hull, are the underpinnings of this made-for-TV movie. Historians have long debated whether the massive liner, which had been pressed into service as a British hospital ship, was sunk by a stray mine or a German torpedo, but this production centers on German saboteurs aboard the ship. Amanda Ryan turns in a lively performance as a plucky British intelligence operative who battles sexism as well as German spies, while the biggest name in the cast, Jacqueline Bisset, has a mostly extraneous role as a British socialite. Just as the ship Britannic has always taken second place to the more famous Titanic, this production suffers when the obvious comparisons are made with James Cameron's blockbuster. There are scenes, including some watery escapes below decks in the sinking liner, that seem virtually modeled on the big-screen Titanic, and the computer-generated images of Britannic are often glaringly obvious. But there is enough of a plot to keep a viewer's interest, and action scenes, such as gun battles in the engine rooms, to keep the plot steaming along. --Robert J. McNamara

Description

It was the sister ship of the infamous Titanic... and its final destiny was the same. Experience the true untold story of Britannic, a tumultuous, epic voyage of human passion, courage and betrayal aboard an ill-fated ocean liner bound for a shattering demise. With the world at war, an undercover British agent (Amanda Ryan), embarks the Britannic in search of a German spy believed to be on board to sabotage the ship. Posing as a governess, the undercover agent finds herself falling in love with the ship's chaplain (Edward Atterton). In a stunning discovery, the lovers suddenly find themselves enemies of war. And when a massive explosion deals a deathblow to the ship, their battle becomes one for their own survival. With a dynamic, international cast and a story line that hosts a chilling tale of espionage, politics and romance, Britannic brings one of history's most devastating events to riveting, new life. Edward Atterton, Amanda Ryan, Jacqueline Bisset, Bruce Payne, John Rhys-Davies

4 out of 5 stars Britannic's name.......2007-04-20

I haven't seen the movie but thought I would pass along this interesting fact. The name of Britannic was not the originally planned name for Titanic's younger sister. The original name was to be the Gigantic but due to the sinking of the Titanic, White Star thought it might be tempting fate to keep the name. Thought you might find that of interest.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough facts........2007-01-24

The special effects on the HMHS Britannic sinking is the whole of this movie. The plot on the made for Hollywood about spies, and govenment plot is made up. The movie should have stuck with real events not a made up plot. It is a movie that makes one think whay did they bother. The HMHS Britannic, (Titanic's younger sister) deserved better. She struck an underwater mine in the Greek Kea Channel. Luckily loss of life was a minimal 33, or 35. Ship great --- movie lame

4 out of 5 stars A for Effort.......2007-01-10

This movie was made shortly after the Titanic movie. Unfortunately, it is a very low budget movie, so it leaves much to be desired. A movie like this could have been made almost as in sequel format to James Cameron's Titanic. Instead, it is a movie not alot of people know about, and will never be able to enjoy. Its sad, because I find the tragedy of the Britannic more ironic than that of the Titanic.

5 out of 5 stars Titanic's Forgotten Sister... Rememberable Movie.......2004-11-16

The reason I watched this movie when it first aired on TV was because I was getting over a phase where I was interested in everything related to the Titanic tragedy. This movie of the equally tragic demise of Titanic's sister ship ranks in my to TV movies of the last few years. The cast were all perfect in their parts. Amanda Ryan is quite believable as Vera Campbell, John Rhys-Davies (one of my favorite actors ever!!) adds a special brand of comedy as the Brittanic's captain and the two kids are adorable!! There are a few moments that are some what unacceptable for younger children, including a couple of bullets and some blood-shed. However, the drama and angst is well balanced out by some comedy and adventure moments. The suspense is gripping, and all the good points overshadow the less-than-perfect special effects. If you liked "Titanic", this is a must-see movie!!

5 out of 5 stars The Titanic's Forgotten Sister.......2004-11-06

I've read all the reviews and just had to add another one. I'm thrilled that somebody finally made a movie about this forgotten shipwreck. The Britannic was the third of three Olympic Class ships, (Olympic, Titanic and Britannic). Everybody knows the Titanic's story as it's been told and retold and often added to over the years, but what about her sisters? The Olympic had a long career and was retired and scrapped, though the Britannic met a similar fate as Titanic, as described in this TV adaption.

True, the British were at war and the Britannic was serving as a hospital ship, but what caused her rapid sinking is unknown. A Titanic survivor (Violet Jessop) was onboard during the sinking as a nurse on Britannic. And, the casualties of the Britannic were accurately depicted here as seen from the lifeboats, as another lifeboat filled with passengers was chopped to bits by the propellers, a sad fact. So some facts were twisted and turned around, it's a movie, not a National Geographic Documentry.

This is an excellent movie for anybody with a passion for excitement, drama, mystery and shipwrecks. I thought the story was plausable and it kept me interested. The torpedo scene was merely added, my guess as a hint of things to come, and the sinking itself was excellent. The water did look fake but to see this beautiful ship go to her grave was awsome, never before seen in anything more than paintings.

Nobody complained about Cameron's made up love story in 1997's Titanic, or the way he dropped the ball with Molly Brown in the lifeboat, they were movies! A love story was needed, as in the 1953 Titanic with Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck, and it was very suitable in my opinion to incorporate spying and sabotage into this movie . . . it doesn't mean we have to accept it as fact, it's entertainment, pure and simple.

So I give this one of a kind movie five stars. For it's casting, it's graphics, it's story and most of all, for finally giving this forgotten maiden of the sea her moment on the silver screen.

I saw this movie on the Sci-Fi channel years ago and loved it. I couldn't stop watching it and everytime I saw it listed, I would watch it again. Finally I bought my own copy on Amazon.com. The characters are all on an old lost ship in the ocean. The atmosphere is spooky and you never know when a ghost is going to pop out! Very suspenseful.

3 out of 5 stars Really "Lost" Voyage.......2005-12-16

I happen to like ghost ship movies, too. I saw this and decided to get it. Others here have described the plot, so I won't go into that. I found though that the plot was rather wobbly at best. Unlike "Ghost Ship", where we know the souls are trapped onboard and that there's an evil force that wants to add the heroes to the deceased passenger list, here we have no idea what exactly is taking shots at our intrepid adventurers. In "Ghost Ship", those who were taken in by the allure of illicit gold lost their souls. Here there's no criteria. There are times it seems like it's ready to take off, only to sink (pun intended) back into a mediocre plot. I didn't mind the ending, although it's just as unbalanced as the rest of the story.

3 out of 5 stars Almost An Intelligent Thriller.......2005-11-29

"Lost Voyage," starring Judd Nelson and Lance Henriksen, is a very well done B-movie. It isn't quite as good as "Ghostship," which is similar since both are about a cruise ship that vanishes and then pops up a few years later with a few "stranded" passengers. Both films feature a shady salvage crew as well. That's about where the comparisons stop. "Lost Voyage" actually manages to be very enjoyable for the bulk of its duration. However, the ending, like so many before me have stated, is just a little bit goofy and off-center.

Nelson plays a likeable guy who is obsessed with the Bermuda Triangle and the "Corona Queen," the ship that suddenly pops up out of nowhere and carried his parents to their demise back in 1972. He uses plenty of neat little gadgets to track paranormal activity on the ship in hopes of finding out more about his parents' deaths and to assist a news team hoping to bank in on the spooky cruise ship. Lance Henriksen, forever a staple of excellent B-cinema, turns in a wonderful performance as the captain of the salvage crew hoping to make a fast and fat buck off of the wreck. The rest of the cast is comprised of unknowns who all manage to turn in pretty good performances.

Things start to go bump in the night aboard the wreck, and the crew comes face-to-face with an abundance of creepy images and nightmarish visions that are intended to scare the viewer but don't quite make the cut. As the body count rises, the survivors decide to get off of the ship as quick as they can. This results in more deaths and an ending that just falls terribly flat.

The special effects are hokey at times, especially in the ending, but they hold up well thanks to a decently written script with a reasonable plot.

If you enjoyed "Ghost Ship," you might want to give this flick a try. To be honest, though, I'd just wait until this comes on the SciFi channel before I'd buy it. It's worthy of a rental. After that, the buying is up to you.

4 out of 5 stars Lost Ship Returns From The Bermuda Triangle 25 Years Later.......2005-06-21

This movie came out around the same time as Ghostship, and seeing as how it is only a cheapie, I payed out some pocket change and found it was better then expected!

PLOT
The story is about a cruise ship that sets sail sometime in the 1960's and it is sucked into a mysterious storm and is never heard of again. At least not untill 25 years later when the boat mysteriously re-appears off an island in the Bermuda triangle.
On the lost voyage a kids father and step mother where on it, and now 25 years later that same kid is grown up (Judd Nelson) and is a paronormal researcher and is talked into going onboard the ship with a reporter (Janet Gunn) who needs the scoop.

Once on the ship they find no bodies but signs of struggle and terrorisim. But soon mysterious things start to happen to them and it becomes a nightmare when there crew of 10 start reducing in numbers and the mysterious storm is brewing there way, and all they want is to get off the ship, but help is not available for a while.

Review
I found I liked this movie alot more then Ghostship. I watched Ghostship and I really did not like the end of that movie, but this one sort of had the ending that I preffered. Tho, dont compare Ghostship to this movie, they are completly different. Judd Nelson (The breakfast club) & Lance Henrickson (Millenium) play out very convincible charactors, as do most of the cast, but those 2 play off each other very well.

The CGI effects I thought where not convincing and looked like CGI rather then real, but however, you dont need great CGI effects to make a movie work, you need a good plot, a good cast and and a good director/editor to make the film work... so they could of used tissues on strings for ghosts and I think the movie would still be enjoyable. I also just found out this was a made for TV movie, so that explains the low-budget CGI.

BONUS STUFF
I dont know if the regioun 1 DVD is the same as the region 4 DVD, so forgive me if there differnt.
There is a featurette thats only worth a look at if you liked the movie, but it's nothing spectaculer & a filmography/bio of the cast and director... nothing much for the bonus section.

Overall I thinkt he movie is great. It's in widescreen and surround sound, the sound effcts are ok, the CGI is laughable sometimes, but it doesent matter. And I'd recomend this movie as a rental before paying any attention to reviewers dissmissing it.

Watch it if you liked Ghostship.

4 out of 5 stars watching the lost voyage.......2005-03-16

I REALLY LIKED THIS MOVIE,IT MAY NOT EXPLAIN EVERYTHING IN THE END BUT AT LEAST EVERYONE DIDNT HAVE TO DIE IN IT,THE CORONA QUEEN DISSAPEARS IN 1972 REAPPEARS 25 YEARS LATER APPARENTLY EMPTY OF PASSENGERS AND CREW,IT KEPT ME INTERESTED IN IT TO THE END,IF YOU LIKED GHOST SHIP YOU PROBALY WILL LIKE LOST VOYAGE.

4 out of 5 stars VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED.......2005-01-22

As far as "ghost ship" movies go, this one's surprisingly creepy and effective. Although some of the plotting is vague and undefined, the story manages to scare up a few jolts. Judd Nelson plays Aaron Roberts, a paranormal investigator, whose father and stepmother were among the passengers of the Corona Queen, which disappeared in the infamous Bermuda Triangle in 1972. 25 years later, the ship mysteriously reappears, and Nelson is asked by a pretty tv journalist (Janet Gunn) to accompany him to the ship. His curiosity, plus a visit from a ghostly specter, propel him to do so. Heading the salvage is Lance Henriksen, stalwart and semi-malevolent as ever. Reliable supporting actors Jeff Kober and Mark Sheppard tag along, as do Richard Gunn and Scarlet Chorvat. Once on the ship, weird things start happening and soon we know what will ensue. The CGI effects are obviously "staged" but they have a dreamlike, ethereal quality that fits the atmosphere of the movie. Director Christian McIntire (Antibody) uses lighting and music effectively, resulting in a spooky little tale.

3 out of 5 stars Classic science fiction stuff.......2006-05-26

Its easy to understand why people dont like classic older movies,
no budget, bad acting, black and white...but for those who have
seen this movie and others 20 to 40 years ago, these movies were
gold, cheap yes, but they stirred the imagination of many, and better movies came out later. Even if this movie is almost a duplicate of the first voyage to a prehistoric planet, i still watched both with delight. The story, the monster, the robot and
greatest of all the weird atmospheric music.
I still love the stuff, too bad only so much got made.

2 out of 5 stars Fun to laugh at..........2006-04-04

One of my goals in life is to watch every piece of cinematic schlock from the twenty years before my birth...roughly 1959 to 1979. It's more realistic than breaking Wilt the Stilt's record (no, silly, not the 100 points...) or dropping acid and running around the State Department scaring foreign diplomats. I doubt I'll ever even have a panda bear as a pet. So I figure this one's my best shot, have at it. This particular film is a recut version of "Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet", itself a recut and dubbed version of a Russian flick called "Storm Planet". Now, "Storm Planet" or "Planeta Bur" is supposed to be good, but I can't say for sure, never having seen it. What Bogdonavich does here is the old Roger Corman trick of using a narrator (himself in this case) to make sense of, well, a story with holes big enough to drive a convoy of Hummers through. Basically, two cosmonauts and a robot crash on Venus. A second group of three cosmonauts is deployed to rescue them. Venus, it seems, is similar to prehistoric Earth, with dinosaurs and men in rubber lizard suits. Oh, and telepathic mer-woman in bellbottoms who worship a rubber pterodactyl that looks to have been bought at Family Dollar. Problems arise when the cosmonauts kill said dollar store rubber pterodactyl vis a vis the fact that said Venusian mer women worship him. Not to worry, soon they find a new idol...the robot, who is junked by volcanic lava. You a witty person, with witty friends, who likes to drink? Really? Me too. You may just enjoy this film with company then. Might I suggest the Tree Line Sci-Fi 50 film pack, which contains both "Voyage" films, instead of blowing a third of the price on just one movie? Yes indeedy.

1 out of 5 stars The boys never meet the girls.......2006-03-13

I am fond of bad science-fiction films, but this is just too much. I can't recommend this one, unless you put it on fast forward. So what if you can't hear the dialogue? You're not missing anything. Just watching it is sufficient enough, if "sufficient" means guys in six-feet-tall Godzilla suits, man-eating plants with 40 tentacles, a robot named John, a flying car that doubles as a submarine, and a rubber pterodactyl. And, darn it, the guys never meet the girls, although the girls see the guys, who they don't seem to like very much, which is why they try to zap them with thought-waves. And some doozies those girls are, too. Although they seem to spend most of them time in the sea, biting chunks out of raw fish, their make-up, hair and eyelashes (all very '60's) remain perfect. Not really worth watching, especially since the very washed out "color" is really annoying.

2 out of 5 stars If you can't make it campy enough the first time..........2006-01-22

In 1965 Roger Corman and a small gang of others took a Soviet movie, added some scenes with Basil Rathbone and Faith Domergue, and created a reasonably serviceable science fiction movie titled "Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet." There were some strange moments and a few funny moments, but the movie was a reasonably campy, low-budget science fiction film. Apparently someone (Corman perhaps) decided the movie was insufficiently schlocky and gave it one more shot.

In the original movie we see two groups of men wandering around Venus. The first group crashed and is trying to get rescued. The second group of men is trying to find the first group of men. As both groups wander around they encounter a cheesy looking reptilian bird, a deluge, and an erupting volcano. In this movie Corman provides an explanation for these happenings; an explanation that probably would have been better left unexplained.

It turns out that there were a bunch of blond Barbie clones wandering the planet with telepathic powers and excessive chest development. These women, who spend a lot of time lying around with 60s-looking pants and shell tops, walk around acting like a coven of witches with too much makeup, false eyelashes, and too little in the way of prehistoric attributes. Their hair is, of course, perfectly styled, in spite of the fact that they spend a lot of time in the sea. Mamie Van Doren, one of the three M's of the 50s and 60s (Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe included), is the leader of the Venusian blonde babes, who include a cluster of women who may have been so embarrassed by this movie that most of them never appeared in a film again.

The movie switches between the men and the women, who (a rare-for me-plot spoiler here!) never meet each other. The women perform some mumbo-jumbo ritual, and some catastrophe hits the men. I was wondering in "Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet" why all these things happened right at the particular moment.

This movie was completely unnecessary. If "Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet" was unbelievable, this movie is pure fantasy. I am sure director Peter Bogdanovich looks back on his first feature(?) film with some fondness as well as with some embarrassment. If you buy this turkey be sure you have your sense of humor handy.

This movie was also titled "The Gill Women" and "The Gill Women of Venus," though gills were never evident to my disbelieving eyes. Now you have three movie titles to avoid. Let's hope no one ever gets the idea to remake this thing.

2 out of 5 stars Voyage To The Planet Of Telepathic Vulcanism.......2005-12-06

Now I like theatrical cheese as much as the next person, but this is a moldy piece of stinky gouda. This film is essentially a bunch of often-seen stock footage (most of which came from behind the Iron Curtain) shown in glorious sepia and white. The box says the film is in color, but the reality is generally otherwise. This is a real chore to get through even for devoted fans of bad movies.

The plot, as much of it as there is, concerns three groups of voyagers to Venus, who find giant man-eating flowers, pterodactyl-like flying things (the earlier reviewer was spot on in his comparison to "The Giant Claw," which is, tragically, a much better movie), and the most ridiculous six foot tall tyrannosaurus creatures wrestling around in mud with astronauts (and a robot). About 35 minutes into the movie we finally see the women, headed up by Mamie Van Doren, who generally sing like Sirens, and incant for volcanic eruptions to thwart the intruding astronauts. The astronauts have particularly silly and incongruous equipment, especially their atomic powered flying car (that also doubles as a submarine), and are dubbed into English with some of the worst dialogue in film history.

The whole mess is narrated in flashback by one of the astronauts who, of course, is in love with a woman on Venus, and pines for her in a plot reminiscent of "Nude on the Moon," which, even more tragically, is also a better movie than this.

For mind-numbing bad film exposure this is tough to beat, but I still give it two stars for the audacious compilation of film from so many sources into a finished work that almost makes sense. Watch it at your own risk, because only the strong survive.
