For Godzilla's 20th anniversary, Japanese film company Toho reinvented the series once again. Mixing science fiction (with a rather obvious nod to the Planet of the Apes series), mythological fantasy, and secret-agent intrigue, this 1974 entry begins with the startling image of Godzilla doing battle with himself! Actually it's a towering robot juggernaut unleashed by black-blooded ape-men invaders from outer space. Disguised as the King of the Monsters, Mechagodzilla sets off on a rampage until the real Godzilla shows up; however, unable to handle the mechanized menace alone, Godzilla teams up with a new character, a mythological lion-god named Caesar. This "bionic-zilla" is almost as impressive as the Big G himself, a titanium-clad robot equipped with ray beams, flame throwers, and dozens of missiles. Godzilla sports a peacocklike display of silver dorsal fins and a mean new suit with a fierce head. Bad alien makeup and Godzilla's decidedly "friend of mankind" attitude, all mixed with the James Bond-inspired spy subplot, lends a cheery camp flair to the science fiction adventure. This one's followed by the direct sequel, Terror of Mechagodzilla. --Sean Axmaker

2 out of 5 stars Good movie, sub-par release.......2007-03-20

GvsMG2 is one of my favorite Heisei Godzilla films. I used to watch it vigorously as a kid when it was released on VHS in '99.

When Tristar announced they had acquired the rights to several G-films and were releasing them to DVD, I was a little disappointed that this was not on the list. When they finally did release this particular movie, I couldn't wait to get it. Unfortunately, when compared to the Tristar DVDs of Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster or the original Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, this one falls short of my expectations.

First of all, the fact that both Japanese and English audio is available is a plus. However, they're NOT in 5.1 surround but 2.0 stereo and handled pretty poorly with lots of unequalized sound and echos. I won't talk about the English dub except say that it's god-awful. Even worse, the subtitles are taken from the English dub and NOT translated from the Japanese version, which means that what you're reading in English isn't what they're saying in Japanese. Alot of things are mistranslated or overly simplified and sound just plain stupid.

Second, the anamorphic widescreen is again a plus, but the quality of the print is not pristine, surprising for a film that's only a little older than 10 years. The print itself is the same video print Tristar released on VHS, with bland fonted credits at the beginning and worst of all the removal of the closing credits, replaced by a quick copyright statement. For a movie like this where the credits are rolling over an actual scene from the film, this is unforgivable. It was terrible on VHS, and why they did the same for the DVD is inexplicable. As a side note, all the other Tristar DVDs (excluding the 2 double-sided discs for GvsKG/GvsMothra and GvsSG/GvsDestroyah) come with the complete credits, especially the newer films.

Special features, like all the Tristar releases, are non-existent, which is a real shame. I don't understand why Tristar doesn't include making of features on ALL their discs because the Toho R2 releases have a wealth of making of featurettes and trailers, so they do exist and are available.

In conclusion, while better than the first crop of DVDs released by Tristar in the late '90s/early '00s, this one falls well below their better quality releases of some of the older films as well as the newer ones. If you could care less about print and audio quality, special features, and correct subtitles go ahead and buy this DVD. If you want the definitive version, get a region-free player and buy the R2 DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Godzilla movie.......2007-03-11

Better than the first Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. My son really like Rodan and Fire Rodan.

5 out of 5 stars The Mother of Godzilla Adventures!!!!!.......2006-08-21

This is a really good movie. Cool MechaGodzilla and great special effects. This is the only Godzilla 90's movie where you don't see wires every time you see a flying monster But the only reason that I give this movie four stars is the look of Rodan (Scratch that. Radon) He looks really weird in this movie. But a big leap on Baby Godzilla. He doesn't look like Cookie Monster anymore. Awesome Finale!!

2 out of 5 stars Boring and Cheesy.......2006-06-21

I don't know what has happened. When this first came out on video in the late 90's I loved it. It was my all time favorite Godzilla movie. But now, several years later, it makes me cringe.

The movie starts out great, with the Mechagodzilla score blaring as we see the new-and-improved Hesei Mechagodzilla. In fact, my favorite aspect of the movie. After that point, we are introduced to dull characters speaking cheesy dialogue. I am fine with the dubbed track, as I expect the sub-par dubbing that Tri-Star made for these films. But the original Japanese track with subtitles is just as bad, which was suprising. As far as the characters go in the movie, most have gone through little development before the movie ends. At least the human characters do. Godzilla, Baby Godzilla and Rodan show a lot of emotion in this film, and the Godzilla suit was tweaked to give it a more feral look. The suits all look great, and they are handled well, though Rodan looks very fake while flying, since his wings barely flap at all, a frequent problem I've noticed in movies with flying kaiju. The updated Mchagodzilla looks feirce and powerful, but he does not instill the same amount of awe as the original.
But who cares about all that. Some people buy this movie just for the monster fights. Sadly, they aren't very notworty. The firt fight, between Godzilla and Rodan, is the only one worth pointing out, as it is fast paced and brutal, but the fights between Godzilla and MEchagodzilla are simply lame. They consist of the two monsters firing their energy beams at each other until one is incapacitated. The whole final battle is just spent firing beams, and is very unoriginal and unexciting.
So, in conclusion, both the human plots and monster fights are fairly boring, and the only upside is the one intense battle in the beggining of the film and the great score.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better, could be worse. .......2006-05-24

A middle of the road Godzilla flick, this film sees one of Godzilla's classic foes return, marking the third time Godzilla has clashed with his mechanical counterpart. This second incarnation of Mechagodzilla is a construction of the humans as opposed to aliens, and is designed to put an end to Godzilla's reign of destruction, as opposed to conquering the planet.

Based upon the technology left behind by Mecha-King Ghidora in 1991's Godzilla vs. King Ghidora, this version of Mechagodzilla is impervious to Godzilla's atomic breath weapon and is loaded with missiles, laser cannons, and a weapon called the plasma grenade that can absorb Godzilla's breath and then use it against him. It also has electrical cables called shock anchors that can pierce Godzilla's skin and hit him with a powerful electrical charge, and an ultimate weapon known as the G-Crusher that can paralyze Godzilla. Why have I gone to all this trouble to tell you about Mechagodzilla's weapons? I did that because in the end, they don't matter, and Godzilla trashes Mechagodzilla badly. There, I've spoiled the ending; I'm a bad man. I guess you probably guessed that, though, because it always seems that Godzilla finds a way to win, no matter how badly the deck is stacked against him. I know Godzilla is supposed to be the villain and all, but be honest, how many of us are really rooting for the humans to destroy him? I always cheer for Godzilla to teach those puny humans a lesson they should have learned a long time ago: You cannot kill Godzilla; you can only piss him off. Let him stomp Tokyo flat and find a nice place to live where he won't come and crush you. Problem solved.

A large chunk of the film's plot centers on a baby Godzilla found on a distant island, and the return of Rodan. Rodan and Godzilla have a violent custody battle over the baby, but by the time they're finished, those dastardly humans have stolen the kid (who has yet to hatch at that point). Godzilla and Rodan are both telepathically drawn to the baby, and the humans decide to use this to smash the nuclear leviathan once and for all. What's interesting is that the baby Godzilla actually seems afraid of Godzilla - maybe he thinks he'll be an abusive dad - and calls out to Rodan when he needs help. Rodan spoils the human's plans by snatching the baby, but Mechagodzilla proves to be far too much for the pterodactyl to handle - Rodan's "death" at Mechagodzilla's hands is pretty gruesome. In the end, Godzilla prevails with Rodan's help. The baby Godzilla seems apprehensive at following his adoptive father - it seems like he would much rather stay behind with the humans, but the scientist who's been working with him knows he must leave. The fear you can see in the baby's eyes as it approaches the shore to follow Godzilla out to sea is pretty touching.

I found this film to be entertaining enough, and the return of Rodan was cool. Mechagodzilla seemed a bit overpowered, and doesn't look nearly as slick as his third incarnation in the Millennium Series. As usual, I could have done with a bit less human drama and a bit more giant-monster action, but you can't have everything, right? Still, as far as Godzilla adventures go, this one is well-done and fairly satisfying, it just lacks that "little extra something" to catapult it to the level of such masterworks as "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" and "Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidora: Giant Monsters all-out Attack".

5 out of 5 stars best godzilla movie ever.......2007-05-15

If you are a godzilla fan, nothing beats this one! It has the best looking godzilla and the most action throughout out of any other godzilla movies.

5 out of 5 stars re: Best Godzilla movie ever made,.......2006-09-30

This was by far, the best Godzilla movie ever made. The only exceptions perhaps is the original Godzilla (his first movie) and the first appearance of Monster Zero. The fight sequences of man and beast were terrific.....dare I say the fights between man and alien were actually believable?

The main human hero, Shimizu was actually a complete character: thoughtful, cunning, headstrong, but take-action. Unlike most of the humans in the Godzilla film, he was not a complete idiot! I mean, making a copy statue of King Caesar was a brilliant move!

on the idiotic side for a character: why the Professor who helped fix Mechagodzilla bring his daughter to the most dangerous areas, is beyond me....I know, it's only a Godzilla film, still...! I guess those scientists aren't very wise, eh?

And, the other complaint is: if the aliens were so ruthless and bent on detroying Tokyo/Earth, why not just kill Shimizu and the girls to get the Statue of King Caesar? (and when the Chief of the aliens orders Mechagodzilla to kill Caesar, why didn't he just fly over and blow him to bits?)--well, of course, if that happened, we wouldn't get any of the cool and cheesy Japanese singing to wake King Caesar up!!
Anyway, enough of the "plot" hole mistakes.... the music was intense and interacted well with the movie itself. the battles between the monsters reminded me of old wrestling moves, and or gladiator type battles. I always love it when Godzilla postures to his enemies with his gestures and body language. Even the camera angles to certain scenes made sense!

Yeah, I watched it too many times, but it brings a smile to my face whenever I watch these cheesy Godzilla films as I recall memories of my childhood--and it will always help me forget the stuff that happens now.

Cheesy or not, Godzilla, the guy in the rubber suit, will always be THE Godzilla to me, and not the CG stuff of the 2000s era.

3 out of 5 stars The best Godzilla film of the 1970s, and one of the most fun films in the series.......2006-08-18

Jun Fukuda's GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA is one of the most popular of the original Godzilla series. It's the best of the Godzilla films released in the 1970s, and possibly one of the best of the entire original series. The plot involves a group of apelike aliens (PLANETS OF THE APES, anyone?) which build a cyborg Godzilla to conquer Earth. Can Godzilla stop the cyborg? What do you think?

For me, the highlight of the film is Masaru Sato's kooky score. Akira Ifukube's music makes the monster battles seem horrifying, but Sato's music makes them seem like a major rumble, more like a major wrestling match than an epic battle of beasts. This was Sato's last Godzilla score; he'd previously written inventive and unusual scores for SON OF GODZILLA and GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER, both directed by Jun Fukuda.

Jun Fukuda isn't a popular name amongst most Godzilla fans because his films tend to be more silly than most (namely SON OF GODZILLA, though he also directed the series' worst entry, GODZILLA VS. MEGALON). I must admit that I love him. Granted, he's no Ishiro Honda, but his Godzilla films are very fun and amusing. Though most of GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA is what you'd expect from a 70s Godzilla flick, there are some moments of greatness, including some apocalyptic shots of Godzilla during a thunderstorm and of Mechagodzilla setting Tokyo aflame at night. There's also a great scene where Anguirus, in his final appearance until 2004's GODZILLA: FINAL WARS, rumbles with the skin-covered Mechagodzilla.

The writing, like most everything else in the film, has its moments, but for the most part is just silly. Sometimes it's quite confusing. The Godzilla suit looks ridiculous rather than terrifying, but that may have been the producers' goal, as the series had become more for children than anyone else by this point. Mechagodzilla is neat, but King Caesar seems out of place and foolish.

All in all, this is one of the most fun entries in the Godzilla series, and very likely the best Godzilla film to come out of the 1970s. The Big G returned for one last rumble in the direct sequel, TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA, before disappearing for nine years.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fast Paced, Exciting Godzilla Movie.......2006-08-01

This is probably the most fun, enjoyable Showa Godzilla movie. The plot involves Ancient Japanese folklore, Intergalactic Espionage, Exciting Kaiju battles and plenty of charisma and skill from most of the actors performing. The special effects are some of the best in the Showa series, especially compared to the quiality of effects in the last two entries. Acting is all around adequate, though no one in particular's performance stands out. The story progresses at a fast pace, and I found it never to be boring.

Younger children on the other hand will probably not enjoy this film becasue of the amount of non kaiju-realted action and plot development. Also, as some reviewers have somewhat comically complained about, their younger kids and sometimes siblings where upset by a graphic battle between Meachgodzilla and Angurius, which involved some pretty nasty mouth wounds. Just a heads up for people planning on watching this movie with small kids.

A great movie all around, and one of the better Showa entries. Great for repeated viewings.

4 out of 5 stars Its weird.......2006-04-02

I really couldn't care less about special effects most of the time, but it still seems odd that this was made six years after 'Destroy all monsters' and was made by the same company and the special effects seem to be worse (explosions, which are in most cases probably real, although small, explosions, are, obviously, not really any different from DAM)... was this made when Toho had budget problems? Ah well, special effects don't mean anything, so who the Hell cares? The fight scenes weren't quite as good as 'Destroy All Monsters', although they were more voilent.

One thing I don't get ia that Mecha G is consided to be one of the possible best G-villains (the other being King Ghidorah)... well, I should say this now, so that people watching the movie won't be disappointed: In no way is Mecha G even close to the greatness that is King Ghidorah (this being the only reason the movie is 4 stars instead of 5)

5 out of 5 stars Godzillalicious.......2007-01-16

Excellent choice for Godzilla freaks! If you want nonstop earth shattering action, this is the collection for you.

2 out of 5 stars Great movies but the Collection is without merit.......2006-12-31

First off, these are all good to excellent Godzilla
flicks - lots of fun and worth owning. I give 2 stars
because if you don't happen to already own any of these,
you can at least get an instant collection for a fairly
good deal (low price).

The bad news is for those who are not new to Godzilla and
who have a collection already: all Sony did, from the looks
of it, is bundle up the back stock of previously released dvds.
There are no decent extras to speak of. This collection
features 9 movies on 7 disks as follows (two disks are double
features).

The Good:

Yes, there is some good here! The following are how ALL the
movies should have been handled and would have made this a more
solid effort on Sony's part:

Godzilla x Megaguirus, GMK and Godzilla x Mechagodzilla are
all in High Definition, offer English and Japanese soundtracks
and english subtiltles, which is the way ALL Godzilla flicks
should be presented in this day and age of DVDs.

The Bad:

Godzilla x Mothra Battle for Earth and Godzilla x Ghidorah.
A travesty because these are STILL not presented in their
original aspect ration; they have NO JAPANESE soundtrack and don't
even have close captioning/English Subs. These are the exact
same Full Screen-No Frills copies that have been floating around
for years - whats up with Columbia Tristar!?

Godzilla x Space Godzilla and Godzilla x Destroyah. Great
flicks which are at least in widescreen. Columbia Tristar
still held off from including a Japanese soundtrack!

Godzilla 2000 - still just an English dub here folks, sorry.
At least its in widescreen; there is also a comentary track and
a few other nice extras which lift this disk up a bit.

The Ugly:

Godzilla 1998 - including this movie was weak. It isn't
all that bad if you can forget it bears the title of a
Godzilla movie because that's where any similarities end. It
doesn't need further comment except to say its a dinosaur
movie with lots of CGI effects and no heart. Its worth
seeing for the general viewer of hollywood style flicks.

In conclusion, Sony didn't do anything to make this a more
interesting collection for the long-time, long-term fan. I'm
not as sour on Sony/Columbia Tristar as I may sound here, but
this release just doesn't have anything extra.
Sony will have little to say to those who seek out bootlegs
or versions released from other countries in order to view
the movies as they were originally released.

50th Anniversary Editions:
Better news is that the other earlier 70s Godzilla flicks
(GxMegalon, GxGigan, GxMechaGodzilla etc.) were released
with English and Japanese dubs. Hoo-Ray for Columbia Tristar!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this if you love Godzilla.......2006-07-26

This is probablythe worst set of movies to be put together. Even "Godzilla vs Megalon" had MORE HEART and Fun than these rejects. Watch the classics if you can-they are all much better and more family friendly. People used to MTV quality and trash movies though will probably go Ga-GA over these efforts though.

Buy the special edition Gojira or english subtitled Japanese language Godzilla movies out or soon to be released instead.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2006-03-22

Everything was as ordered. Shipment was on time and the videos were as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars For a limited time only: Things The Curmudgeon actually LIKES - Part Four!.......2006-03-19

If any of you are familiar with The Curmudgeon's other reviews, you may well be scratching your heads at this one. A FIVE star review?! That can't be right. And usually, YOU would be right. The Curmudgeon has dedicated 95 of his 100 reviews to bringing you the very worst things out there. To celebrate the 50 review milestone I reviewed 5 GREAT things that are available on Amazon, and so, now I've reached 100, I thought I'd do the same again. So, from reviews 100 - 105, it's going to be nothing but good, great and awesome stuff.

Sometimes there's no justice. The term "Giant Monster Movies" immediately throws up two names: Godzilla and King Kong. The two kings of the genre have never really been fairly matched, however. Whilst Godzilla has a far greater quantity of movies, the big monkey certainly wins out in the quality stakes. Godawful 70's remake and sequel aside, Kong has fared better in the original movie (easily one of the greatest movies ever made) and the new glossy big budget remake certainly fared better than the abysmal 90's US attempt at Godzilla.

Speaking of THAT film, it's included on this boxset. Now let us never speak of it again. There's far better films to consider, all of which embrace the sense of adventure, inventiveness and fun that make this genre such a joy to watch. This boxset collects some of the more recent efforts, miles away from the more kiddie-friendly fare of the 70's movies. These are far more, um, realistic(?) in approach, a nod to the more serious side of the Big G. It's a superb collection that, crappy American attempt aside, will please anyone who don't salivate over the latest 100 million dollar CGI-fest. A guy in a suit it may be, but the genius of these movies is their ability to make you believe that it's a bad ass radioactive dinosaur trashing Tokyo for the millionth time.

This review isn't just about this boxset in particular, but Godzilla movies in general. If you can accept the often ropey effects, the absurd plots and wonky dialogue, they offer a sense of escapism that is unmatched. These movies have a passion and genuine love for their monsters that is so infectious, it isn't long before you know all of the monsters and are cheering on your favourites ("Go Mecha-Godzilla! Wooooh!")

King Kong and Godzilla, then. Kong may have the better movies, but Godzilla remains the better - and best - monster. Regardless of all the "final movie" comments (pah, I'll believe it when I see it) - long may his reign continue.

And that's part four of five taken care of. Just one more thing that The Curmudgeon actually likes. But what on earth could it be? Only one way to find out...

3 out of 5 stars No 2000 SE.......2004-10-21

I just got this and it doesn't have the Godzilla 2000 Special Edition. Just the regular English dub. It seems like everyone was saying that the 2000 dub/sub would be in here, so I'm wondering where the misinformation originated. The only saving grace is the 3 oldies with the original Japanese track.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great collection, but..........2004-10-20

It may not contain a Japanese/English Special Edition of Godzilla 2000. According to some early reports, this is the same English-only DVD released a few years ago. So, don't buy the box unless you don't any of the films and you also want the U.S Godzilla.

4 out of 5 stars will godzilla 2000 be rereleased seperately?.......2004-08-25

this set is a good set because it has three dvds i dont have and also apparently godzilla 2000 is a new special edition with the japanese version on the other side of the disc! unfortunately those are joined by the worst godzilla film of them all the american godzilla. a dvd that most huge godzilla fans already own like me and that casual fans don't want to own. unfortunately us huge fans may be forced to buy this because of the godzilla 2000 dvd. there is no place i can find to order this seperately so i am very afraid that i will have to buy this. this is a problem because of the cost and also i want to ask for the godzilla dvds for christmas but no one will buy me a five disc set for christmas. its to expensive. so please tristar release the special edition of godzilla 2000 seperataley. just because you have a bunch of extra copies of your bad movie doesn't meen we should have to buy it to get a good movie. UPDATE 10/18/04 the godzilla 2000 disc will NOT have the japanese cut! I recommend this to nobody unless you dont have any of these discs buy the new ones seperately and dont encourage Sony's lies about what is on the dvd's consider my review a one star now.

5 out of 5 stars GO Godzilla.......2007-01-12

The day this came to me I watched all of the movies!! Since I was little I have always loved Godzilla and now my son loves it too. This is a super collection to have!!

5 out of 5 stars Godzilla Is The King!.......2007-01-10

This pack has the original film of godzilla, theres alote of destruction. Mothra is very large in "Godzilla vs Mothra". This movie was in the 1960's. Minilla wants to get stronger in order to beat Gabara. a little boy named Ichiro helps out him. He now has has courage to fight in his own battles. This is a sequel to "Son of Godzilla" both made in the 1960s's. A sequel to "Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla"...Terror of MechaGodzilla. After King Caesar and Godzilla defeated the metal menace, and three men stoped the aliens, more aliens apeared and rebuiled him, but now a preostoric monster called Titanosaures controlled by a old man's cyborg daughter. And Godzilla has no partner this time to make things equel. but a team that studies the giant dino and discovers its weakness. see what happens next. Rodan's movie is simaler to the first godzilla movie.

5 out of 5 stars Godzilla-The Ultimate Collection.......2007-01-09

All 5 DVD's work very well. I am very pleased with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars As much Godzilla as you can stand........2006-10-05

The Ultimate Godzilla DVD Collection has five movies. The first film is Godzilla, King Of The Monsters. It is the original movie that brought Godzilla to life on the big screen. Well, the original did not have Raymond Burr in it, but you understand what I mean. Godzilla is a 400 foot high Tyrannosaurus Rex woken up by an atomic bomb test. Only 78 minutes, it isn't that long a movie.
The second film in the set is Godzilla Vs. Mothra. Mothra, a giant moth, wants her giant egg back and is coming to Japan to get it. Yes, I said moth. Tiny twins, greedy businessmen and Godzilla all guest star in this flick. Mothra would go to make her own flicks.
Godzilla's Revenge has a really bad plot but is really just an excuse to show off all those monsters from past films. Just watch it to enjoy seeing Godzilla kicking [...].
Terror Of Mechagodzilla is a great film. Alien invaders try to use a fake Godzilla, damaged from an earlier battle with Godzilla but not forgotten, to take over the Earth and only the real Godzilla can stop them.
Rodan is just a special bonus movie. Flying at supersonic speeds, two giant creatures cause damage to buildings and snap up humans for lunch. Yummy!
This set is just cool to have and a great gift for any Japanese monster fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2006-08-12

With The exception of Godzilla's Revenge (which is probably the worst Godzilla movie ever!) I couldn't have asked for a better set, especially considering the price. 4 of the 5 are solid films, and did I mention the price!?!
