The Dead Zone is based on a novel by Stephen King, directed by David Cronenberg (Scanners, The Fly) and produced by Debra Hill (Halloween, The Fog). Such a trio of horror vets would be expected to come up with an evening of shocks and gore, but The Dead Zone is a surprise. While it has great atmospheric eeriness and undeniably scary moments, The Dead Zone is at heart a sensitive and thoughtful portrayal of main character Johnny Smith's dilemma. Christopher Walken, king of the vaguely creepy, plays Smith, a man who awakens from a five-year coma with the very mixed blessing of second sight. At the mere touch of a hand, Smith is unwillingly launched into scenes of past and future terror. (Director Cronenberg is said to have fired blanks from a .357 Magnum just out of camera range to keep Walken's flinching spontaneous.) The Dead Zone wisely takes its time telling the story, and thus allows for some great performances. Walken gives a rich portrayal of the conflicted Smith, and Colleen Dewhurst and Tom Skerritt both do welcome turns in smaller roles. The most fun of all, though, is clearly being had by Martin Sheen, who gives a spirited performance as a complete sleazebag. --Ali Davis

In a word... disappointing.......2007-07-03
The Dead Zone is (or maybe was) one of my favorite TV series. The characters have always had unique styles - consider Johnny's detached yet humorous view of the world, Walt's admirable cowboy mannerisms, and Rev. Purdy's emotional and spiritual assignment to the world around him, to name but a few. The acting and stories in Season's 1 and 2 were outstanding. Do you still remember when Johnny awoke in the hospital and saw the doctor's family escaping from Vietnam? Or when he saw the nurse's daughter trapped in a house fire? Wow, that was some imagery.
In Seasons 3 and 4 the cleverness and magic started to be hit and miss. Some shows were still very good (e.g. Rachel, Coming Home), others were poorly written. Overall though, I was still hooked. I wanted to see not only where the main Stilson/Armageddon story was headed, but also the sideline adventures just to see the characters "play together."
Unfortunately, Season 5 continues the slide downward. Despite what another Amazon review stated, there are actually 11 episodes, only a couple of which are good (the Inside Man being my favorite). Some of the episodes are so poorly written that you can see the pain on the actors' faces as they are forced to play a part in something that left them professional ashamed (e.g. Panic, Into the Heart of Darkness). Another notable disappointment is how little we see of the characters in this season. Sarah is only in the season for about 5 minutes - did she quit?, Purdy gets a few more but not much. Instead the writers have chosen to bring in no-name characters that come and go, leaving little more than a brief taste as to what they were about.
The series concludes with a "big event" that is so poorly thought out that anyone with half a brain will turn off the TV in utter disbelief. Do the writers really need to dumb down the plot so much? I'm sorry to report that the days of cool characters interacting in an original story seem to be gone. Count me as a disappointed fan. I can only hope someone goes into USA Network and does some serious house cleaning before next season.
Me encanta Dead Zone.......2007-06-25
surprisingly not very good, unlike previous four seasons.......2007-06-21
I own the dvd sets for all five years of the Dead Zone, and I am a big fan. However, I was really disappointed with this set. First of all there are only 9 episodes (3 dvds x 3 episodes each) as compared to maybe 16 episodes in the other years. Second, is that the stories suddenly quote weak and far fetched. It seemed like the show got better and better from years 1-4. But then suddenly its not believable. Also, there must have been some contract dispute with Sarah Bannerman because she almost never appears in any of the episodes.
The Fifth Season of "The Dead Zone" works better without Greg Stillson.......2007-06-10
When I rewatched the fifth season of "The Dead Zone" from start to finish on DVD (bonus points for this set coming out right before the start of the sixth season) I also happened to be working my way through "The X-Files," watching one episode a night right before bed (I am up to Season 7 at this point). While watching "The X-Files" I had discovered that I really did not care as much about the so-called "mythology" episodes as I did the various weird cases that Mulder and Scully had to deal with that never involved aliens, black oil, or whatever. As I watched "The Dead Zone: The Complete Fifth Season" I found myself having a similar reaction to Greg Stillson every time he showed up in an episode.
Everybody who read Stephen King's novel "The Dead Zone" (loved it) or saw the theatrical movie (thought it was miscast) knows that the final confrontation with Greg Stillson is what costs Johnny Smith his life. Johnny knows from one of his magic touches that Stillson's fledgling political career will end up with him as President, at which point he will cause a nuclear war. The conflict in the novel was all about Johnny finding out that he could change the future for the better and then trying to come to terms with whether or not he had the moral authority to do so. Well, in the television series Johnny came to that decision a long time ago and while it was obvious that the television series had to be about a whole lot more than Stillson, I now have the feeling that this is all going to end just like the book/movie with both of them dead. Okay, maybe Johnny will get out this alive, but I am becoming more and more convinced that the situation will not be resolved until the final episode.
This season begins with Stillson engaged to Miranda Ellis ("Forbidden Fruit"), which resolves the previous season's cliffhanger in unspectacular fashion, and he pops up again as part of a government committee investigating Johnny's actions at a Waco-like disaster involving a religious cult ("Vortex"), and then in the final episode as events take him closer to the White House ("The Hunting Party"). But five seasons down the road, it is hard to care anymore. There is a major development in this whole plotline in that it is not just a combination of Stillson's charisma and a reactionary political climate that will make him president but also the machinations of the Janus Group. I can do without the whole conspiracy bit, but they now become another element for Johnny to deal with from now on.
It is also another reason that I like the episodes that have nothing to do with either Stillson or Janus. "Independence Day" shows what Johnny can do stuck in a traffic jam on the highway, ends up as the inside man on a robbery ("The Inside Man"), and infiltrates a cult compound ("Vortex"). Those last two are interesting because they touch on the religious implications of Johnny's gift much more than they usually do on the show. "Symmetry," in which Johnny experiences visions from multiple perspectives, shows that the writers can still come up with interesting twists on the basic premise of Johnny's powers. I was much less enamored with the idea that Gene Purdy has any secrets left when it comes to Johnny ("Revelations"), but having the Collector back for another go round worked out pretty well ("Into the Heart of Darkness"), except for what it says about convenient gaps in Johnny's knowledge that allow for such a sequel to take place.
Another reason I wish the show would put Stillson in the rear view mirror is that it seems like some of the cast members are losing interest. There are a whole bunch of episodes missing one of the characters in this season and already in the current season one of them actually dies (albeit, a fate predicted for them in "Cujo") and at least one more appears to have left the show. But then how many times can Bruce ask Johnny what he is going to do about Stillson? On balance, I still like the show, but the last couple of seasons the USA "Characters welcome" promos have been the best part of "The Dead Zone." Co-creators Michael and Shawn Piller, along with actor Anthony Michael Hall and the rest of the cast, have done an admirable job of turning King's novel into a solid television series, but even without psychic powers I have to believe the end is in sight.

The fourth season may fall a little short of the three that preceded it, but The Dead Zone remains one of the smartest, most intriguing series on television. As its adherents well know by now, the show, based on Stephen King's 1979 novel of the same name, was adapted for TV by Michael and Shawn Piller, with actor Anthony Michael Hall (who's also one of the producers) starring as Johnny Smith, who recovered from a horrific car accident and resulting six-year coma to find that his fiancee (Nicole deBoer) is now married to the town sheriff (Chris Bruno), who's helping raise her and Johnny's son. What's more, Johnny is now possessed of some remarkable and unsettling powers: simply by touching another person, or objects touched by others, Smith experiences visions that illuminate events that have happened, will happen, or are simultaneously taking place elsewhere. It must be handy to know which elevator button to push when you're looking for someone who's in trouble, or to realize that it's okay to jump off a hundred-foot bridge because you've seen yourself surviving the fall, but Smith's visions are rarely comforting and not always reliable, leading to moments of genuine suspense and intrigue.
With eleven episodes (plus a "bonus episode" from December, 2005) spread out over three discs, The Dead Zone is at its best when dealing with the series' one ongoing storyline: i.e., the machinations of Congressman Greg Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery), the dumb, arrogant puppet of sinister forces who aim to put him in the White House, where, by accident or design, he may preside over Armageddon, according to Smith's visions. Unfortunately, only three Season Four episodes address that story, and they fail to advance it much further; indeed, Episode 11, "Saved," serves mainly as a cliffhanger for subsequent seasons. The remaining stories, in which Johnny helps the cops pursue various psychopaths, perverts, missing persons (including a Lennon-esque rock star presumed dead many years before), and such, are good but considerably more pedestrian. Still, while other shows may have cooler special effects, more action, and larger doses of tension-relieving humor, The Dead Zone stands out for its overall smarts and classy production values. Bonus features include deleted scenes, audio commentary on a few episodes, and a featurette focusing on production design. --Sam Graham

I LOVE this show! Especially Anthony Michael Hall as "Johnny". Watch it! It's on USA.
Dead Zone is still alive.......2007-04-13
Following Johnny Smith's psychic adventures always makes me feel like I'm a part of Penobscot County, Maine. Each episode leaves me hanging for the next one, and always comes through with the thrills and chills that make this series so great. I would recommend this, and all seasons of The Dead Zone, to anyone who likes sci fi action/dramas such as X-Files, Lost, Heroes, etc.
Dead Zone, always thrilling.......2007-04-03
Wow, I have all the 4 Seasons of Dead Zone and the suspance and the stories are always well done and rich of suspance. After 4 years I can say the episodes are always at high level, well built and characters and life around John Smith are realistic.
I really enjoy watching this DVD.
Just one thing...there are no subtitle so it can be difficolt to understand all the words, but that's because I'm italian. I remember there were subtitle on the 1 season only.

May all your zones be live ones!!!.......2007-03-28
When the pilot for The Dead Zone television series was aired a few years ago, I remember watching a little bit of it and not being overly impressed. Of course, I've seen the movie with Christopher Walken about twenty times, and it was difficult for me to imagine anyone else taking over the role of Johnny Smith. Add to that the fact that Anthony Michael Hall was doing the lead, and you'll understand why I threw my hands up in the air in frustration, lamenting to myself on how TV screws up everything it touches by Stephen King. I mean I still see Hall as the young, dorky teenager in The Breakfast Club. Well, all I have to say is shame on me. Anyway, I just purchased the pilot TV movie and the first four seasons of The Dead Zone. I wanted to give Anthony Michael Hall and the show another chance, and I'm glad I did. Though I had some problems with the pilot and the changes that had been made from the novel (for example, when Johnny wakes up from his coma, he discovers that Sarah is married to Sheriff Bannerman and that his mother is already dead and that she'd remarried while he was in a comma to the good Reverend Purdy, who's now Johnny's step-father and guardian), I still found myself enjoying it. It took me a while to stop seeing Christopher Walken as Johnny and to accept Anthony Michael Hall in the role, but the important thing is that I did. It's the episodes of the first season, however, that really grabbed me. I gradually accepted the changes that had been made and got into the flow of the characters and what was happening to them.
Though this isn't evident in the description of the first season's boxed set, the TV pilot movie is included in this as the first two episodes. If I'd known that, I wouldn't have purchased the pilot movie separately. Now with regards to the other eleven episodes, some of them work better than others, but all of the shows are good. There's one episode where a down-on-his-luck electrician decides to rob the local bank. Sarah's cashing a check in the bank when the robbery goes down. Johnny has a vision in which he sees everyone in the bank dying when the police try to take out the robber. He decides to enter the bank and to see if he can change the outcome. What made this particular episode so good was Stephen Miller, who plays the electrician. He gives his character heart and soul, and before the show is over, you not only understand what's he going through, but you're also hoping that he won't be killed. In another episode an elderly man (Arty) sees a young woman in New York City who looks just like his long-lost fiancé (Abby), whom he never saw again after World War II. The man begs Johnny to check it out, and in the visions that Johnny later has, he travels back to the beginning of the war and meets the woman that Arty was so in love with. Elizabeth Ann Bennett plays Abby, and once you see her, you clearly understand why Arty loved her so much. She's the type of woman that any man would fall in love with. I guess you could say that she kind of stole my heart, too. In still another episode, Johnny travels to what I can only describe as a parallel universe and sees what it would've been like if he'd never been in the car accident and had married Sarah. It's almost heartbreaking because Johnny doesn't know which life is the real one. There's one episode that I couldn't quite buy. In it, Johnny and his friend, Bruce, stop in a small town to get something to eat. A murder has just taken place the night before and a young girl is still missing. There are satanic overtones to the murder. When Johnny offers to help the police solve the case, the town's people begin think that he's the killer because of his psychic ability and want to literally burn him at the stake. I had trouble with the premise of a town of supposedly rational people being manipulated into murdering someone by a few crazy individuals. I will say that the final episode, which introduces Greg Stillson to the audience, accomplishes what it was meant to do. It hooks you and then makes you want to immediately watch the second season. That's why I took a big chance and got all four seasons at one time. If I enjoyed season one, I didn't want to have to wait two-to-three weeks to get the next boxed set.
All in all, the majority of the episodes in season one are pretty good. There's humor, suspense, and a lot of heart that makes you care about the individual characters. The regulars who support Anthony Michael Hall all do an excellent job in their roles. I've grown to like Nicole DeBoer, who plays Sarah. I kept seeing Brooke Adams in the role from the original movie for a while. Chris Bruno does a good job of playing Sheriff Bannerman, who's a person that is caught between the woman he loves and the man that she still loves, while growing to depend on Johnny for his help in solving many of the cases that come up. John L. Adams, who plays Johnny's physical therapist and close friend, is also his sounding board and the origin for a lot of the humor that takes place in the series. Last, but not least, is Kirsten Dalton, who plays the sultry redheaded newspaper reporter that's a threat to Sarah and her relationship with Johnny. All the episodes have commentaries, and at the end of each disc, there's a behind-the-scenes featurette that deals with such things as the making of the show, its guest stars, and its visual effects and music. If you're a Stephen King fan and haven't yet watched this television series, then you owe it to yourself to either buy, or rent, the first season and to check it out for yourself. I think you'll find yourself hooked like I did.
Great show!.......2007-03-27
My husband and I started watching this on TV, and it's cool to watch from the beginning. Great stories, cool show.
Brilliant.......2007-03-25
I love it! I read the book and thought it was brilliant, then I saw the movie, disappointing. But this TV series does work much better. What you think you can see in the book is there and more. Few things have been changed but is still working good.
A great show starring Anthony Michael Hall.......2007-03-20
The first season of "The Dead Zone" is a heartfelt and challenging show that is led by Anthony Michael Hall playing the lead character of Johnny Smith. Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, the show gives continuity to Johnny Smith's life and surrounds him with the universe of a small town in Maine in which he is suddenly reintroduced to. Johnny Smith's legacy began on the night he left a carnival that he attended with his fiancé' Sarah. On his way home he was in a horrific car accident that left him in a coma. When Johnny Awakes from this coma years later, the life he knew has drastically changed. He suddenly has the powers to see into the future and past of people through touching them or an object of theirs. He is much more than a "psychic" however, because it is the trials and tribulations of dealing with his fiancé' being married (among other things) that makes this show very deep and compelling. The actors are great and the continual roadblocks Smith goes through when trying to get his life back in order are always interesting. I cannot wait to see season two of this great television series!
Re-discovering the Dead Zone.......2007-01-13
The collapse of the Star Trek Television franchise left fans, like myself, looking for something new in Sci-fi. Where to turn, but logically to the exodus of writers and producers that were weined on that show and have now turned their creative talents to re-invigorating sci-fi television elsewhere. Ronald D. Moore went on to successfully re-create "Battlestar Galactica", Brannon Braga became the executive producer on the short-lived, but nonetheless thrilling, "Threshold", and Michael Piller, along with his son Shawn, adapted Stephen King's Dead Zone novel for television. My reason for "getting into" the Dead Zone is simply, Michael Piller, arguably the best Star Trek writer to come out of its television franchise. Included in the Dead Zone's first season are episodes written by Michael and Shawn Piller (formerly of Star Trek:The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager), as well as a few by Joe Menosky (also a former writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation), who serves as executive consultant on "the Dead Zone". Ironically, Dead Zone writer Michael Taylor is now penning episodes for Ronald D. Moore's "Battlestar Galactica." Check out Season Two for an episode by former Star Trek: DS9 writer Robert H. Wolfe.
If you were a fan of the later Star Trek series, you might want to check this show out. It has the suspense, drama, mystery and humanity that made me a loyal Trek fan for years. The Matrix-style visual effects are cutting edge/state of the art. As for the sci-fi element, there are no space battles, aliens, cool-looking robots, or space ships, but Johnny's ability to see into the past and future give him the perspective of a time traveler, while leaving him the human ability of only being able to change the future from the present.

This television series keeps getting better and better!!!.......2007-04-01
The second season of The Dead Zone has proved even better than the first. All the actors are now more comfortable in their roles and the basic story line is running smoothly. There are nineteen episodes in Season Two, rather than the thirteen that made up Season One, the twelve on Season Three, and the twelve on Season Four. All of the episodes are excellent, but a few really raise the standards for network television as far as touching the heart and soul of its characters.
On Disc One is a two-part episode in which Johnny Smith (played by Anthony Michael Hall) and Sheriff Bannerman (played by Chris Bruno) go into a copper mine to save some trapped teenagers. During the attempted rescue, Bannerman is severely injured when a cave-in occurs. If Bannerman dies, the door will be open for Johnny to finally be with Sarah and his son. Johnny, however, chooses to fight for Bannerman's life by going into his mind and giving him a reason to live. On Disc Two, there's an episode where Johnny has the opportunity to stop Greg Stillson's bid for Congress by supporting the opposing candidate, Harrison Fisher (played by guest star, Gerald McRaney). The only problem is that when Johnny shakes Fisher's hand, he sees Fisher as part a Navy Seal team in Vietnam destroying a village of innocent women and children. Fisher immediately senses what Johnny saw and doesn't know what to do. The thing is that Fisher's a good man and he can beat Stillson in the election. What to do is the question. Another episode on Disc Two deals with an elderly man (played by Robert Culp) that Johnny befriends. The man used to be a spy for the American government. Now, he's kept under a kind of house arrest because of the knowledge that's inside his head. When Johnny gets too involved with the man, the government starts putting pressure on him to back off or else, not to mention moving the man to a different location. On Disc Three, there's an episode where Johnny unintentionally causes the death of a low level mobster who was planning to murder his boss in order to protect the woman he loved. When Johnny finally discovers the hidden reasons behind the mobster's actions, he decides to put his life on the line and to do what the man was unable to accomplish. In still another episode, Johnny finds out this his best friend is dying from a heart disease, but that he will receive a donor's heart at the last minute. The catch here is that it will be from his friend's sister (played by Ally Sheedy), who dies in an unexpected car accident. The sister is in love with Johnny and wants to begin a relationship with him. Johnny tries to change the outcome so that both will live, but in the end it finally comes down to whether or not Johnny allows his friend to die, or his friend's sister to live and what that will set in motion. On Disc Four, a particular episode has Johnny seeing a vision of himself kissing the beautiful woman that he's sitting next to in a restaurant bar and then the both of them being murdered by a would-be mugger. Everything he attempts to do to change the future causes a different, but equally fatal outcome. He also finds himself attracted to this lady and realizes that it could affect her decision about accepting a marriage proposal. Last, but not least, on Disc Five is an episode that will lead you into Season Three. A man from the future (played by Frank Whaley) warns Johnny about the death of his wife and daughter and wants Johnny to save them. In return, he'll tell Johnny what happens when Armageddon arrives. What he shows Johnny will have you running out to buy the boxed set of Season Three.
These were just a few of the great episodes in the second season of The Dead Zone. All the guest stars played their roles to the hilt and made you care about the finale. You either wanted them to live or to die, depending of their character. The episodes also show you just how difficult it would be for a man of Johnny's ability to help those that he comes into contact with. Most of the people he tries to help don't believe in his visions and distrust him. That, however, doesn't deter him in his efforts to help. There was one episode in which the airplane that he and the Reverend Purdy were flying on was going to crash. When Johnny attempted to warn the captain of the plane, the Air Marshall on board arrested him. What would you do if you were him in this situation? Or, if you were a passenger on the plane, wouldn't you think the strange-acting guy was nuttier than a fruitcake? There were a number of times when watching the various episodes that I would've held back on what I'd seen in my visions if I were Johnny, keeping my mouth shut and allowing nature to take its course. No, not Johnny! He jumps right into the dilemma with both legs kicking. And, of course, every action has a reaction. You can't always change the future of something without creating a worse scenario. I will say that Anthony Michael Hall deserves a Golden Globe Award or something for his magnificent performance in every single show. Talk about a hard-working actor. This man is in just about every scene in every show. Mr. Hall also has the character down perfectly. This is a very talented actor who deserves a lot of credit for making this television series work. No brag, just fact. As far as the extras go, all five of the discs in the set have bonus features on them that deal with the making of a particular episode, how the whole show is produced and how they try to stay within the budget, not to mention numerous interviews with the guest stars. Now, if only Season Three and Season Four are as good as Season Two, I'll be one happy camper.
DEAD ZONE---ALMOST DEAD.......2007-03-20
This was kind of hard to follow since i didnt have season one, but i really like the flashbacks and how it (attempts) to explain things, will re-vamp my review after i see season one (which i just ordered)
Dead Zone.......2007-01-04
I am a big fan of The Dead Zone. They delivered fast.
The Dead Zone.......2006-11-13
As another reviewer commented, I was not at all sure about Hall, having recalled his teen movies of the 80s. What a surprise! I caught an episode haphazardly, while cleaning house, ande found myself abandoning the cleaning (really--I didn't WANT to quit cleaning!) to watch the entire show. I was hooked and have been since then-catching reruns in order to catch up.
Hall is excellent and the stories are primo--the writing is much like X-Files in terms of thougtfulness and quality.
My one regret is that the initial theme song has changed in the new season. I loved the spooky, haunting quality of the early theme. Is this on CD? I loved that soundtrack.
One comment to improve the show (not that it needs any improvement): please give DeBoer something more to do than be sad-eyed eye candy. She is a pivotal character and I would like to see her in an episode that makes use of her talents (not just her cuteness quotient) a lot more.

Three seasons into it, The Dead Zone has cemented its stature as one of television's most ambitious and compelling series, combining action, psychological drama, and elements of sci-fi and the supernatural in twelve episodes contained on three discs in this handsome, bonus-filled package. Based on Stephen King's 1979 novel (later a feature film starring Christopher Walken), The Dead Zone was adapted for TV by Michael and Shawn Piller, with actor Anthony Michael Hall (previously best known for his roles in the mid-'80s hits The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles) as star, co-producer, and occasional director. Hall ably plays Johnny Smith, who has recovered from a six-year coma to discover that he now has some rather remarkable powers; merely by touching other people, or objects touched by others, Smith has visions that illuminate events that have happened, will happen, or that are taking place elsewhere. He has put this ability to use as a psychic, working with the police in the Maine town in which the stories take place.
Understanding all of this may take a while for the uninitiated; not only does Smith jump both forward and back in time, but he often sees himself in his visions, and sometimes we're watching the Johnny of the present with the one from the past onscreen at the same time. The Dead Zone has a lot on its hands in each episode, with a stand-alone storyline (a Rep. Gary Condit-Chandra Levy takeoff in "Finding Rachel," a Columbine-esque school shooting in "Cycle of Violence") balancing the ongoing matter of Smith's visions--how they came to be ("Collision" details the car accident that led to his coma and, eventually, his powers), how to interpret them, and whether they're a blessing or a curse. All of that is mixed together with his strange new personal life (his pregnant fiancé, played by Nicole De Boer, married the local sheriff while Johnny was out of commission). And then there's the overriding series theme, which is heavily featured in the first two episodes of this season but mentioned only occasionally thereafter: Armageddon is coming, Johnny alone lives through it, he might even cause it
and maybe he's the only one who can prevent it.
It's a tough act to pull off week after week, but while the show occasionally seems about to collapse under its own weight, it mostly succeeds, albeit without a shred of humor and an ultra-serious, portentous vibe that gets a little tedious. At the very least, The Dead Zone makes for consistently intriguing viewing. The generous bonus features include commentary (by Hall and many others) for every episode, three featurettes, and more. --Sam Graham

Dead Zone Season 3.......2007-01-20
We couldn't find this very popular season anywhere and I looked and as usual Amazon had it and for a price less than what we paid for the other seasons. Great value
not subtitles!!!.......2006-11-10
Good, but the absence of subtitles in english are not clear, not very good.
Really good show. Some problems with DVD........2006-09-18
About the show itself, I have surprisingly little to say. This is a great show, exceedingly well-done, with great characters, great effects, and wonderful storylines. Everything about the show is very professional, and this season is just another great installment, hardly distinguishable from season 1 or season 2 in that regard - the high quality is consistant.
About the DVD's themselves, though...
First of all, as others have noted, there are these little white bars that blink and move across the top of the screen on my DVD player.
But that's hardly the worst thing. The worst thing is that somebody apparently decided that nobody needs the subtitles, so they just didn't include them. Speaking as somebody who routinely has trouble understanding dialogue, and who regularly scans back and replays scenes with subtitles turned on to catch just one line of dialogue that I can't interpret, I can't tell you how frustrating it was that I couldn't do that when watching this season. It significantly decreased my ability to enjoy the show, because there are so many areas where I simply have no idea what the characters were saying.
On the plus side, I really enjoyed the special features (as well as the episodes themselves, of course) - especially the featurette on disk 2 about the caterers, which was surprisingly entertaining.

--Ali Davis
Description

Customer Reviews:
One of the Better Stephen King Screen Adaptations.......2007-05-18
David Cronenberg directs the Stephen King novel about a man who awakes from a coma with a life draining ability to see future tragedies when making contact with people. He also finds he can change these morbid outcomes. The screenplay (not written by Cronenberg or King) remains the films only real flaw besides some questionable supporting cast members. The novel is not a book that would make a perfect story to tell on film so the screenplay sort of stays in the shallow end and spits forth each episode that our hero Johnny Smith expereinces one at a time and without the level of understanding and depth King's book has. That is not to say The Dead Zone isn't a good movie. It's actually a very good movie.
The film remains a semi-classic in the suspense genre. Cronenberg has a way of handling scenes that is very European despite lacking the technical skills of his peers. He can give the actors very specific emotional direction and tell so much with using little or no dialogue. This helps the screenplay because it only offers some flashes of great dialogue. Cronenberg loves taking on films that lack certain aspects and giving them depth in places you never thought could have it. He is a unique force in independant films and earns his stars among the mainstream fans with this film. Martin Sheen surprisingly gives a solid performance here as well. He plays a crooked politician bent on gaining the presidency and earns our hatred quickly. He is actually quite remarkable here.
O.K., now it's time to play favorites. Johnny Smith is played by one of the most identifiable actors of all time. The greatest character and supporting acting of all time in my eyes and here we see him in a rare feature role. He is Christopher Walken and with all the imitations of his wild talk and bizarre off-screen shenanigans aside, he is quite simply an amazing actor. He takes his role very seriously here and turns the film from mediocrity into a very good movie. He takes the character for what readers may have loved about him and that is that he is your every day guy who happened upon some very usual and at times deeply sad circumstances...it just wasn't in the cards or it wasn't meant to be like Smith's Doctor felt. For those who read the novel you'll see subtle references to some of the more robust thinking in the story but never quite enough. There is an underlying message in the film that I really wish wasn't somewhat lost among the communication of the screenplay and the direction. King's novel touches on these things tremendously well and makes us question fate and wonder if time and death is really just so one-dimensional. The film makes you think if you want it to, but not like the novel which is truly one of King's greatest. I honestly believe Walken may have been the only guy on the set who understood this about the story.
If you are looking for a film full of suspense and several exciting climaxes and you like Christopher Walken, then I highly recommend The Dead Zone...but keep in mind that so few King novels have been done real justice with a film and where this is probably not one of them it remains a very good movie. It isn't quite Carrie or The Shining but it is still very good.
This Movie Is a Thought Experiment.......2007-05-18
I am used to Stephen King's work being horror stories. It was surprising for me to discover that this was not a horror story, but a thriller. I will not describe the story for the fear of revealing the plot. One thing I will say is that the description on the reverse of the package concentrates too much on the particulars of what happens to an individual and totally neglects the bigger implication - that this is Stephen King's thought experiment of what would happen if a person possessed a power that most other people do not possess - of the particular power of seeing the future, the past or the present - but elsewhere. What kinds of possibilities are opened for such a person? How would the society and individuals interpret his actions? This is, indeed, a thought experiment in sociology of ESP. I enjoyed this movie and was surprised.
ONE OF THE BEST "KING" ADAPTIONS TO DATE!.......2007-04-08
This is an impressive king adaption. Walkin is mezmerising as the man who can not only see the future, but he can change it. The rest of the cast is excellent in this first rate production of one of my favorite thrillers! This film deserves a completely remastered DVD treatment.
"You're Going To Get An Ice Cream Headache....".......2007-03-12
Stephen King has always been an enigma to me. Once in a while there's some pretty good adaptations of his novels("Carrie, "The Shining", "Misery") though it's his short works that seem to have produced the better films("Stand by Me", "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Green Mile"). "The Dead Zone" falls in the category of slightly above average thanks to the stellar direction of horror-meister David Cronenberg and a top-notch cast led by Christopher Walken. There were moments of deja vu here where I felt the film was derivative of a "Twilight Zone" or "Outer Limits" episode but there's also some genuine inspired moments as well. King has some interesting things to say about telepathy and the responsiblities of those imbued with it. Walken has a sympathetic turn here as the telepath whose psychic abilities are foisted on him. Good supporting work by vets Herbert Lom as Walken's physical therapist, Tom Skeritt as a local sheriff, cult fave Anthony Zerbe("The Omega Man", TV's "Harry-O") as a father who hires Walken to tutor his son. Martin Sheen's work here kind of anticipates "The West Wing". Think of Josiah Bartlett's evil twin. Not bad but could have used more cowbell.
The Dead Zone: Highly recommended dvd.......2007-02-16
The Dead Zone, in my estimation, represents Stephen King at his best.
It is an absolutely chilling story of psychic phemomena centering
around a man , Christopher Walken, who can not only see the future
but in some instances can change it. It is Walken's best work and
almost on par with his performance in the Deerhunter.
Martin Sheen is also quite excellent as a meglomaniac senator
who would become President and literally end the world by placing
his finger on the button and enabling nuclear holocaust to ensue.
Many similarities may be drawn to our current leader Mr. Bush.
The film was shot in 1983. It is now 2007. Stephen King
surely had tremendous insight into the future.

Customer Reviews:
I was disappointed in this one.......2007-05-23
I am a Stephan King horror fan and when I read on the front of the DVD cover it was based on characters from his novel I wanted to see it. I knew that it was a TV pilot, but this was nothing like or associated with SK's characters in the orginal Dead Zone movie or book. It was loosely based, if at all, on his work. I did like the movie and that is why I am giving this movie 3 stars instead of 1 or 2. The story was good and did stand on it's own as an orginal movie. I just thought that the cover of the DVD was deceiving. Sorry guys if I have offended anyone about this movie. It is just my opinion.
STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!.......2006-05-24
Oh I hate this crappy schlocky turkey. The original was a classic that was a great adaptation that did justice to the Stephen King novel (and I liked it alot better than the novel). No offense to Anthony Micheal hall, he is a good actor, but good actors don't save messes like this. Stick with the original David Cronenberg film and the novel. Avoid this bunk.
Wanted to Hate It..........2004-10-24
being a huge fan of the Stephen King novel, and of the thinking that the original version was good enough, I really was expecting this to be lame. Thankfully, my fears were annhialated. Although this is merely influenced by the novel, they did stay true to the characters' personalities. This pilot won me over, and now I am excited to see the rest of the episodes, since I feel that I will once again be able to spend time with many of the charcters I loved so much from the book.
Anthony Michael Hall was even more effective as Johnny Smith than Christopher Walken was in the original. The overall feel rings true to the novel. Definitly worth checking out!
Dead Zone Fans Beware.......2004-05-16
Warning -- If you are looking for the unaired original Dead Zone pilot episode that was offered for a short time as a bonus to those who purchased the First Season Set, do not buy this DVD.
Although this is a great DVD, it is the same first episode that is included in the First Season Set.
I purchased the first season set after the deadline for taking advantage of the offer for the bonus DVD. I really wanted to see the original unaired pilot episode and I mistakenly thought that this was it. To my dismay found that it was the 2 hour series premier that I already had on the First Season Set.
I guess this one will find its way to a friend or end up in the used bin at the video store.
If you are unfamiliar with The Dead Zone and don't want to lay out the bucks for the complete First Season Set, this DVD is an outstanding intro to the series. However, if you love the series, go for the gusto and get the set. I'm on my second viewing of the set and can't wait for the release of the Second Season Set.
Very good for a TV show.......2004-05-04
The pilot is included with the first-season DVD, so now I have two of them. The production is very good, as are the special effects, especially the scenes in Vietnam where debris is frozen in mid-air while the lead character walks through the dustry street.
The story is tight, and the writing is good. I'd like to have seen Rev. Purdy's character better explained, but I think that will make itself known in the first season, which I'm now watching.
Overall, it's a really good story and makes you think about the possibilities.
I'm glad it's a cable show, because the cable shows these days seem to do a better job at developing characters and offering something fresh and unique. That is: They aren't afraid to take chances.
I think we've all had enough reality on television that "The Dead Zone" is a welcome chance to walk on the other side.

The Stephen King Collection, a box set of four films, Graveyard Shift, The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, and Pet Sematary, is great in that it provides viewers with a full range of King movies, from the truly eerie to the terrible. The set's two finest movies, The Dead Zone, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Christopher Walken, and Pet Sematary--arguably King's finest story adapted to film--both come as Special Collector's Editions, with excellent bonus material, including lengthy interviews with both Stephen King and the directors. Pet Sematary, shot in King's home territory, Maine, tells the story of city slickers Rachel and Louis Creed (Denise Crosby, Dale Midkiff), who move to the country to raise their daughter, Ellen, in peace. They learn that they've relocated onto a trucking thoroughfare, and Ellen consequently loses her pet cat. The plot quickly riffs out into mystical, traumatic territory. Louis's neighbor Jud Crandall takes Louis to ancient Indian burial grounds, where the dead are reanimated. The Creeds's zombie cat sparks this Frankenstein-ian adventure, pitting urban settings against rural, and the horrific against the pastoral. Pet Sematary looks more and more like Hitchcock, thanks to director Mary Lambert's careful attention to detail. The low point in the set is Graveyard Shift, a washed-up story about a cotton factory that's not only infested by carnivorous rats, but also hosts a dragon/pterodactyl. As night-shift employees get continuously munched, Bachman Mills' owner Mr. Warwick is forced to clean up squalid conditions, for which he hires a basement clean-up crew. Crew members are slaughtered as they try to combat their discovered behemoth, and grizzly scenes showing rats, humans, and the beast's head being chewed up in the cotton gin reduce Graveyard Shift to schlock gore. One is reminded of the intricacies involved in adapting books to film. As King has managed to be an integral part of his film projects, there are still successes and failures. All the movies in this set, though, still bear King's trademark, a love for "supernatural deadfall." --Trinie Dalton

Good Collection of King Movies.......2007-03-19
Certainly, my opinion is subjective because I like this sort of fare, silly and all. "Graveyard Shift" is indeed the weakest one, made entertaining by the bad acting of all involved. "Pet Sematary" is also badly acted, though Fred Gwynne is on hand to save much of it. It's one of King's more mean-spirited plots, and if there was humor involved (as the extras purport), I missed most of it. "Silver Bullet" is an odd film, a rather sweet coming-of-age film with a twist. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. (Even Corey Haim was almost tolerable.) And, of course, the special edition of "The Dead Zone" stands way above the rest. Fine acting and direction help secure its place among the best King films. Save it for last...OK, some are silly and mindless, but I like most horror films for that very reason. This collection has the added benefit of a couple of winners. The widescreen transfer is excellent. The price is good. I recommend it...all 4 are true to King, inasmuch as they all take place in Maine.
Two five star movies, one four star movie, and one stinker........2006-10-10
I give five stars for The Dead Zone and Silver Bullet. I give four stars to Pet Semetary. Zero stars go to Graveyard Shift. All in all, it is a good set that is worth the price for three of the films. Just buy it for The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, and Pet Semetary.

--Ali Davis

The first Dragon Ball Z movie.......2007-05-27
Dead Zone AKA Return My Gohan. The first Dragon Ball Z movie.
INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.
OVERVIEW:
This is the first of the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies.
THE STORY:
It's a year before Dragon Ball Z begins, and four years since Goku defeated Piccolo Jr. at the World Martial Arts Tournament. Goku has settled down in a peaceful life with new new wife Chi Chi and son, Gohan. Everything is going great until monsters attack Chi Chi and the Ox King, and kidnap Gohan. Garlic Jr., a demon who is the son of a being who wanted to ascend to the role of Kami but didn't succeed (due to his evil motives), is out for revenge. He wants to wipe out the world's inhabitants and create a new dark age. Goku sets off to rescue his son, and save the world once again.
REVIEW OF STORY:
A lot of people tend to bash this movie, and I don't really see why. It's a great story (a nice "prequel to DBZ itself.) The action here is considerably more hand-to-hand (as opposed to energy attacks) than in later DBZ sagas/stories/movies/etc., which is a nice change from what you may be used to. Piccolo's scenes (particularly the one where he launches an all-out assault on one of Garlic's henches) are excellent. Gohan gets two hilarious scenes, but I won't spoil them (of course plenty of other reviews do, so if you're curious, just read them.) Overall it's a good story. A bit boring at times and not the best, but it works.
OFFICIAL?
Not likely. Not only did this story (like all the movies) not occur in the original manga, but there are too many plot holes. Goku's friends all know Gohan here, but didn't know him one year later when Z begins. Same with Gohan's hidden power, which surprised Goku and Piccolo in the series despite them seeing it in this movie. Garlic Jr. wants immortality, but tries to kill Kami/Piccolo - which would have rendered the Dragon Balls useless had his assault succeeded. Weird. Ultimately, the movie doesn't fit in the storyline (rendering the anime-only Garlic Jr. saga false as well), but it possibly could have happened in the alternate Future Trunks timeline.
REVIEW OF DVD:
There are two releases of this film on DVD - Pioneer and FUNimation.
The Pioneer DVD is poorly designed in that the movie starts automatically and the menus are difficult to navigate. However, it has better bonus features than the newer FUNimation DVD, not to mention a better dub (see the next section of my review for more information.) Get this DVD if you plan to watch the dub more often than the sub.
The FUNimation DVD has easy-to-navigate menus, and a better Japanese subtitled version, thanks to the always-great translating skills of Steven J. Simmons. While the Pioneer sub version uses English-ized versions of Japanese titles/terms, Simmons' subtitles retain Japanese titles (Kun. Sama, etc.) However it has weak bonus material. Get this DVD is you plan to watch the sub more often than the dub.
THE DUBBED VERSION:
There are two dubs of this movie - Pioneer and FUNimation.
Pioneer's dub of Dead Zone is PHENOMENAL. It has the original Japanese score as background music, and the dialogue is almost identical to the Japanese version. My only issues with the dub are the choices of some of the voice actors - this is when Peter Kelamis took over as Goku, and he couldn't hold a candle to the earlier Ian James Corlett. Likewise, Roshi has this horrendous squeaky voice, but he's only in the movie for less than a minute, so no biggie there. By far the better of the two dubs. Get this DVD if you prefer watching the dub.
FUNimation's dub? Not so good. The original Japanese score is replaced by the music you'd expect in a dubbed DBZ movie, the "Gohan is drunk" scene is ruined, and a ton of dialogue was changed around. Why couldn't they just copy Pioneer's script verbatim with the newer FUNimation voice actors? But this DVD does feature a better and more accurate subbed version, so you should get this DVD if you're gonna be watching the original Japanese version more often.
OVERALL:
Good movie. Get the Pioneer DVD if you like dubbed DBZ, and get the FUNimation DVD (available in a box with the other first two movies) if you prefer the Japanese versions.
EDITION NOTES:
Pioneer's out-of-print DVD or FUNimation's version (also available in the aforementioned box set.) Those are your choices here. Once again:
Pioneer DVD if you want a good dubbed version.
FUNimation DVD if you want a more accurately-translated Japanese subtitled version.

THE BAD GUYS FOR THIS MOVIE:
GARLIC JUNIOR
THE 3 HENCHMEN OF GARLIC JUNIOR
The First and the Best.......2006-01-26
Of all the numerous DBZ American movie releases (discounting The History of Trunks and Bardock the Father of Goku) Dead Zone was the first and the best, and the only one to actually have some life in the series. In many ways, it's an introduction to the DBZ series, as it introduces Goku as he is currently, shows us what he's been up to, and brings in his son, Gohan. Along with that, Piccolo and Krillin join the action.
And in this one, the bad guy wins. Garlic Jr., who later has a saga between Freeza and Trunks, starts the movie by collecting the Dragon Balls and making his wish for immortality with the Eternal Dragon. But, while obtaining the balls, Garlic Jr. kidnaps Gohan, who wears the 4-star ball on a hat, and thus Goku gets involved. In an attempt to save his son, Goku, with Krillin's help, and eventually Piccolo's help as well, battles Garlic Jr.'s numerous, spice-related henchmen until the final, inevitable showdown with the immortal Garlic Jr., who has not only a powerful fighting form, but the Dead Zone sucking in the Earth into its Limbo as well. And then, Gohan stirs...
This movie carries itself with some great action, and in this one it has yet to become pointless. Enemies aren't suddenly introduced to make the movie longer. We know who Goku will face from the start. Along with that, it has some pretty funny moments, like Gohan's tripping scene--he accidentally eats a drug-laced fruit--which ends with Gohan peeing on Krillin's head.
Unfortunately, this movie started the never-ending trend of keeping the "movie" length less than an hour. Everything in this movie, and the ones to come, seem jammed in. Something you rarely see in the DBZ series is a fight that lasts less than five minutes. Most go into episode after episode. Maybe this was a good thing about the movie, but you kind of get used to something and to have it suddenly stop is kind of a jarring feeling.
Still, Dead Zone is the best of the movies, with some good action and laughs. And the good thing about this movie is that anyone could pick it up and enjoy it, whether you're a new fan or a long-standing one. And if you haven't yet seen this and you are a fan, then pick this up.
A Very Good Remake.......2005-08-04
I bought the movie last saturday and i watched when i got home. I thoguht it was better than the original movie because it's the way it was supposed to be made. I always say, "The original is the best, unless it's uncut." After I watched the movie, I watched the commentary. I'm a hard person to make laugh, but the commentary people got me to laugh. I would recommend getting this movie if you've seen the first one. I would also recommend this to any person who hasn't seen this movie before so they can see it the way it was meant to be seen. It is definitely worth the money buying this movie.
Dead Zone.......2005-07-03
I bought the Pioneer version of this a few months before this one came out. The movie was very good, but I didn't like the voices at all and the picture quality was simply awful. But, with this version of it, they use the FUNimation voices, with new music and a new script, which I like better than the Pioneer script. (Which was actually the Japanese script.)
Many people like the Pioneer version over this one becquse they used the Japenese music and dialouge. However, if you want that, just watch the Japenese version of it, on this DVD. (Pioneer always had poor subtitles on their DVD's, but FUnimation always gets the subtitles right.) Also, this is the digitally remastered version, and it looks very, very good.
I'm so glad they're finally releasing the Ultimate Uncut editions. Pioneer took and butchered a great series, cutting the climactic Goku Vegeta battle into utter crap, and ruined the great Na
