Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can't quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from Outer Space is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you've heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates ("Future events such as these will affect you in the future!") as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, Plan 9 is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniques: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have "NOT BELA LUGOSI" stamped on his forehead. So bad, it's almost good.......2007-07-03

To fully appreciate this movie you must be totally unimpressed with the acting, costumes, sets, et cetera. You have to laugh at the extra cheesy monsters. This will slump below most other cheesy monsters and bad acting you have seen before. After all it received a couple turkey awards. It takes a special patience to sit through this entire movie. I myself don't have it. I can only take a few minutes of it. To me bad is bad, and this movie is bad. If you find bad entertaining then more power to you. I just find bad to be bad which tends to grate on my nerves. So if you find bad to be good, I certainly respect those that can fully appreciate it. It is a true cult SciFi masterpiece turkey of schlocky B movies.

All you of Earth are idiots!.......2007-06-26

A race of aliens are tired of the "stupid, stupid" Earthlings claiming that aliens don't exist, so they concoct a brilliantly evil plan. First, they fly around in their flying saucers that are "shaped like huge cigars" (??) and fiendishly shine lights in people's faces. Second, they raise three random people from the dead, taking care not to let anyone know they are responsible for this (It could blow their cover.) The dead people, acting on the orders of the aliens, wander aimlessly around a graveyard. One of them even goes into a nearby house and horrifies a woman by walking slowly and staring at her. Finally, the aliens cleverly reveal their entire plan to a trio of snoopers who manage to find their ship (It was hidden behind a tree.) They explain to the Earthlings that they fear Earth will one day discover how to make a Solaranite bomb that will explode the sun. Then they explain to the Earthlings exactly how the Solaranite bomb works. This is why they have to destroy us before we destroy them which will ultimately prove to us that they exist... or something. But there's one thing that these highly advanced aliens didn't count on: three of the Earthlings might resist somewhat.

"Plan 9 From Outer Space" is Ed Wood's masterpiece and is considered by most to be the worst film ever made. Even Criswell couldn't have predicted the cult popularity it has gained. Bela Lugosi died shortly after filming began so the majority of his scenes are played by a look-alike who looks nothing like him. The dialogue is awkward and nonsensical, the set looks like it was borrowed from an elementary school play, and the acting makes Keanu Reeves look like Sir Lawrence Olivier. Listing all the continuity errors would take longer than the film's running time. The only thing that could have made the film worse would have been to include Dolores Fuller.

All in all, "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen, a triumph of will over talent.

Better Than King, Laymon And The Pet Shop Boys!.......2007-04-29

Critics have often called this "The Worst Film Ever Made" and I really don't think it lives up to that reputation. In this movie you have my fellow Hungarian countryman Bela Lugosi who women used to swoon over when he played Dracula and the incredibly HOT Vampira. A lot of this movie is set in a cemetary which is obligatory for any good Horror Film. If given the choice I would rather watch this movie than try to read one of Stephen King's bloated , overwritten books. I keep on getting abusive Emails about my reviews. One of them is from an illiterate guy who thinks that Stephen King is "God", another is a fan of the Pet Shop Boys and I have one woman writing to me who is in love with David Koresh. So I guess I must be doing something right.5 stars for this film.

Ed Wood Saved The Universe.......2007-03-11

Ed Wood's masterpiece, made with a low budget and filmed under trying conditions, is the greatest movie in the history of mankind. Bela Lugosi (whose reanimated corpse grew a foot taller), Vampira and Tor Johnson comprised the zombie army that was going to march on the capitals of the world. The alien Leader (John "Bunny" Breckinridge) had Bela's reanimated corpse destroyed, in order to strike fear in the humans, as opposed to some world leaders, who would have called for more troops. In the world of Plan 9, such outdated concepts as day and night, the living and the dead, and original footage and stock footage, have no meaning. But I have yet to reveal the true greatness of this movie.

The alien Eros (Dudley Manlove) explains that his mission on Earth is to destroy us before we develop the Solaranite bomb. His metaphorical explanation of the Solaranite bomb is chilling. "Take a can of your gasoline. Say this can of gasoline is the sun. Now, you spread a thin line of it to a ball, representing the earth. Now, the gasoline represents the sunlight, the sun particles. Here we saturate the ball with the gasoline, the sunlight. Then we put a flame to the ball. The flame will speedily travel around the earth, back along the line of gasoline to the can, or the sun itself. It will explode this source and spread to every place that gasoline, our sunlight, touches. Explode the sunlight here, gentlemen, you explode the universe!" America, Russia and China were all working on developing a Solaranite bomb when this movie was released. All work on that was stopped, and all records were destroyed, shortly afterwards. To quote Criswell, "Can you prove that it didn't happen?"

And to Think, Plans 1-8 Were Even Worse.......2007-02-22

By far the worst acted, cheesiest, most stilted piece of celluloid toilet paper I've ever seen. A true alien race would erase mankind in a nanosecond if it ever watched this movie.

And it was great! So bad in every way it's howlingly funny, with Criswell's solemn inanities bookending the movie. I saw a public screening of the show with a comedy improv group providing additional dialogue throughout. This movie should be on everyone's must-see list of the classics.

I'll say it up front - I think colorization is a bad, bad idea. The idea of tinkering with classic films to make a few extra bucks is just plain wrong. HOWEVER....when the film in question is the worst movie of all time, adding color to it just seems like one more cinematic sin that can be committed. It adds a whole new level of cheepnis (as Frank Zappa puts it). The 'special effects look cheaper, the sets look more trashy, and the whole film just looks...well, worser than the worst movie ever made. Ergo...much more fun!

I was very pleased with the movie that I purchased from Amazon. I was pleasantly surprised that it was available from Amazon, and that the DVD included the original back & white and the color version.

ED WOOD'S DISASTER....A TRUE MASTERPIECE.......2006-11-23

'Plan 9 From Outter Space' is the best movie to laugh at (not with) because of how horrible the movie is. The acting is wooden. The set designs were unrealisic even for the 50's and the special effects...well believe me when I tell you this...they weren't special.
Bela Lugosi (washed up 'Dracula' actor) died during production and what does Woodman do. Insted of closing production he hires a another actor to take Lugosi place. A man who looks nothing like him. Whats even funnier is that insted of redoing scenes with this new actor he prints the original Lugosi scenes. Way to go Woodman.
I haven't seen the movie in years, something about aliens bring zombies to life or something. Well its a better story than 'Glen or Glenda'. P9FOS is the perfect film to watch with friends over as you will most likely talk through the rest of the movie as if it were your own personal commemtary. Trust me you will have a ball watching this crummy film that almost crucifed Wood. For a director who has no talent what so ever he sure makes a good comedy. Even though that wasn't his intention.

The best bad movie!.......2006-08-01

First off, "Plan 9" is not the worst movie ever made. That is clear to anyone who has ever watched MST3K. Movies like "Red Zone Cuba" or "Manos, hands of Fate" are clearly much worse than "Plan 9." I would put it that "Plan 9" is the best bad movie ever made. When you look at the elements seperately - the dialog is stilted, it has narration, acting?, wonderously bad SFX, dopey story - it is clearly a bad movie. What saves it from permanant obscurity is Ed Wood's unique take on reality. You have to see it to believe it.

The packaging of this classic movie is pretty darn good. You get both the digitally remastered Black and White for you purists out there, and the newer "colorized" version. Colorized movies never look quite right to me, and this one is no exception. The most glaring issue I have is with skin tones. Some people look pretty natural, but others, especially depending on lighting, look really bizarre. Overall, though, the colors in the one are pretty good and do add something to the experience.

In my mind though, the best part of this package is Mike Nelson's commentary. He basically does his MST3K schtick throughout this movie and makes this an even more enjoyable movie. You can see why they never did this on MST3K. There is way too much dialog. It almost seems that Mike is interrupting the dialog and I think that would have hurt an MST screening. But in this context it is perfect.

A word on the extras. I was disappointed with the "Trailers" advertised. I was expecting Ed Wood trailers, but what you are getting are trailers from other movies that have been colorized.

Otherwise this is a great DVD. I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes "bad" movies. This may be the best version of "Plan 9" yet. Eddie would be proud...

Wow is all I can say.......2006-07-29

I am not generally a fan of colorized movies but in this case I make an exception. The B&W version of Plan 9 may be one of the greatest movies ever made but the colorized version is it! The detail is incedible. Not only do you see the shower curtain in it's full glory but the strings on the flying saucers are even more visible.

You can admire your modern slam bang movies all you want but none of them hold a candle to this masterpiece of acting, direction by Mr. Wood and the non-stop action which leaves you on the edge of your seat.

I just wish that some of the modern directors would study Ed Wood's techniques and bring us movies that even come close to this true masterpiece of film making.

I would give it more than 5 stars but that is the Amazon maximum.

"This is an excellent box set and you get all of Ed Wood's films. The king of cheapy creepy's for sure. A must have for any cheese lover!" The box set features "Plan 9 From Outer Space" "An Ed Wood Classic! The film features Bela Lugosi in his final role, but for those of us who love Bela it's nice to see him go out wearing his Dracula's cape. Bela died before the film was finished and Wood's dentist?(who is at least a foot taller than Bela,keeping his face covered by the dracula cape in every scene)had to step in to complete the scenes." The whole box set is a gas!

Ed Wood \ Only for the Collector.......2007-01-09

Ed Wood was the worst film producer of all time. His film, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" has been given the title of "Worst Film Ever Made." Ed was a transvestite so he worn angora sweaters and other women's clothes, and you see this in some of the films.
Although many classic films have been reworked and are in pristine condition, what you see is what you get here. They were a hoot and terrible to begin with. There is in the box a DVD on Dolores Fuller and others of Wood's gang gathering for an Ed Wood Showing. How they all ended up being and looking like is so interesting. Dolores lived with Ed and finally got enough of him and moved on. She became a song writer and wrote some of Elvis' lesser known songs. And she still looks good!
I just loved this collection and got a laugh out of all of it. This is a collection only for those interested in early film making, and as part of film history.

Edward D. Wood Jr. was born in 1924 in Poughkeepsie, New York; spent his youth torn between comic books, pulp fiction, and movie matinees; and after a World War II stint in the Marines landed in Hollywood with an itch to wear women's clothing, drink to excess, and make movies. The result was a series of remarkably atrocious low-budget movies of the "so bad its good" variety, and this inexpensive box set offers not only the best know titles but unexpected bonuses as well.

Filmed in 1953, GLEN OR GLENDA is Ed Wood's ode to the joys and tragedies of cross dressing, featuring Wood himself as the conflicted hero and Delores Fuller as the girlfriend who keeps wondering why her angora sweaters are stretched out of shape. The 1954 JAIL BAIT is a riff on teenagers gone bad and is often described as the best made of Wood's films--but the term "best made" is extremely comparative, to say the least. The 1955 BRIDE OF THE MONSTER is the only Wood film that actually made back its cost; featuring a desperate Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson, a rubber octopus, and a laboratory helmet that looks suspiciously like a collander, it is easily a Wood fan favorite. The 1959 NIGHT OF THE GHOULS is a kinda-sorta sequel, featuring Tor Johnson once again in a remarkably silly story of fraudulent spiritualists who bite off more ghosts than they can chew.

The most celebrated title, of course, is the 1959 PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, infamous as the film built around about five minutes of film Wood took of Bela Lugosi shortly before Lugosi's death. Fans have attempted to catalogue every error in the film, but it is inexhaustible: no matter how many goofs, mistakes, and disasters you notice, you always see one or two more with every viewing. Day turns to night and then to day--all in the same scene. Cars unexpectedly change year and model from cut to cut. Flying saucers cast shadows in outer space. The list is endless.

NIGHT OF THE GHOULS was never actually released during Wood's life time: he couldn't afford to pay the lab fees for a print of the film, and since the film was never issued the transfer is unexpectedly good. This is not the case with the other titles, all of which were pretty battered by the time video and DVD technology arrived on the scene--but this actually part of their charm. And the set includes an unexpected dollop of bonus material.

The big bonus here is THE HAUNTED WORLD OF ED WOOD JR, a 1996 documentary that intercuts various bits of Wood movies with archeival footage of Wood and his circle and interviews with those who knew him, including his leading ladies Delores Fuller, Mona McKinnon, Loretta King, and Vampira (aka Maila Syrjaniemi.) Perhaps the most interesting subject is Bela Lugosi Jr., who is extremely forthright in his opinion of Ed Wood as a cheapjack opportunist who hitched his wagon to a fading and desperate, not out of genuine affection for Bela Lugosi Sr. but to further his own ends. Coming in a close second in bonus material is SAUCERS OVER HOLLYWOOD: THE PLAN 9 COMPANION, which draws from many of the same sources as HAUNTED but which focuses on this specific film.

While it is true that the set does not include every scrap of Ed Wood material available--for a tenth rate director-writer-actor he was remarkably prolific, racking up fifty credits on such films as THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST and ORGY OF THE DEAD--it will hit the spot for all but the most diehard fan. Ed Wood will never appeal to a wide audience, but if you have the warped sense of humor required to appreciate his films, you'll find this set indispensible.

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.

Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."

Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.

Ed Wood: the man and his mission!.......2006-09-18

Ed Wood? Yup, he's a genius... well sort of. I strongly agree with another reviewer who indicated that a film would need to lack any entertainment value at all to be labeled the worst film of all time. As far as this notion goes, Ed Wood didn't make bad films because every one of the five he made in the 1950's are loads of fun and laughs. 'Glen or Glenda' and 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' are likely my favorites. His first feature, about transvestism, is so inept and so incredibly strange, that one simply watches mesmerized at the audacity and enigmatic spirit Wood demonstrated as a filmmaker in the early 1950's. What can be said about 'Plan 9 from Outer Space,' except that every serious film buff and film maker should make this film priority viewing. The other three films directed by Ed Wood and featured in this box set are all worthy of attention because they're nearly as campy, inept, and hilarious as the other two I mentioned above. On the back of the case to 'Jail Bait,' the film description indicates that Ed Wood, here, made his first legitimate film. If the film is legitimate simply because it is less inept and hilarious than his other films, I do think this statement is quite misleading. Ed Wood never made a film that would receive any serious consideration for legitimacy from the mainstream and the critical masses. Ed Wood, now more than ever before, remains in a class all his own. Ed Wood's films are stamped with his trademark zeal, good humor, and distorted logic, and remain the work of a filmmaker who may have lacked talent, but was never lacking in purpose. The Ed Wood box set is a perfect way to enjoy Ed Wood's films for the first or twentieth time. This set is a great buy, but don't neglect to check out Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood,' in my opinion, one of the greatest film biographies ever made.

Ed Wood's films are no cinematic masterpieces, but their entertainment value is unmatched. Plan 9 is the most fun of all his films and a real treat to watch. Getting Robot Monster along with it is a bonus. Although not as enjoyable as plan 9, it was good enough for a few laughs.

I ordered this DVD on a lark based on reviews that it was the worst movie ever made. It did not disappoint. This is the best money I've spent on a movie in a good long time. It's hard to believe this movie was a serious attempt by it's director and producer to make a horror movie. The 1953 was a different time for sure, but it provides hours of entertainment in 2005 and endless fodder for dinner table jocularity. It's a hilarious must have for every home collection.

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE:
My goodness. This is a classic! Poor picture but not boring. You feel how serious, resourceful, and passionate Wood is about directing. The actors (which most weren't) also took it seriously, making the whole thing very innocent and naive. The cheesy storyline is a perfect match for the performance. Good entertainment for all ages, with no blood, bad words, nothing like that (well, it says humans are "stupid"). Each time you watch you find new flaws. I've seen it several times. Cool to play when friends come over. The documentary that comes with the DVD is very good - longer than the movie itself but worth watching. Plan 9 well deserves the fan clubs it has.

ROBOT MONSTER
I expected this one to be a very bad movie. However, I'm not sure it's a movie. It looks like a long skit written by school kids and performed by adults. It's kind of repetitive and boring. The "dramatic wanna be" ending made me sick. Tucker really crossed the line on this one. This DVD will make a good white elephant gift >:) But this movie is very entertaining for people who aren't watching a movie. I mean, if you own a club or a store at the mall and put this movie on a 14 inch tv with no sound (image only), it will get a lot of attention. Just be sure to obtain proper permission (this crap copyrighted).

The 5 stars go to plan 9. Consider Robot Monster a bonus.

There are several packages of Plan 9. I have a few my self including this one ASIN: 630546666. This DVD also contains 40 minute documentary "The Ed Wood Story" featuring interviews with Johnny Depp, Martin Landay, Dolores Fuller, Vampira, Bela Lugosi Jr., and Johnny Legend.

Plan 9 is an operating system that is designed to replace UNIX. Oh yeah It is also a movie.

"Future Events Such As These Will Affect You In The Future!"

Due to their inability to make friendly contact with the earth government the aliens must resort to Plan nine. This basically consists of reanimating the dead to become their army of conquest. Will the plan work?

Due to low budget and the unfortunate early demise of Bela, Ed Woods has to resort to his Plan 9. You will notice that a lot of the scenes are done with curtains. Does his plan work?

This would be a one star movie but because this is a must see to be culturally literate I gave it three stars.

Robot Monster

Dream a little dream of me

Looks like the family is having a picnic in the most unlikely spot, the ravine of Bronson Canyon, California (just rocks, dirt, and more rocks.) It is nap time. When Johnny wakes up he finds that the earth has been destroyed. The advanced force invader is a creature that looks like an ape in a diving helmet. He must be related to Laurence Welk because there are bubbles everywhere. Soon it is clear that the invader (Ro-man) has the hots for Alice (Claudia Barrett). Hope she likes hairy, bald men. Talk about ménage à Trios. Roy said to Alice "You're so bossy that you have to be milked before you come home at night" so they get married.

Will humans survive?
Does Ro-Man get to see Alice strapless? (Will we?)
Will Johnny ever play house with Carla?
Be prepared for the shocking conclusion of "The Robot Monster."

Super Science Fiction Double Feature.......2004-06-03

This bargain set is totally worth the price and should be in every self respecting film aficionado's collection.

PLAN NINE is probably the best film ever made about grave robbers from outer space. Ed Wood remarkably prefigures such modern day director/auteur efforts as Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Independence Day with his skillful use of absurd dialog and incongruous plot twists... not to mention his mastery of the one-take-shot. Bela Lugosi and a cavalcade of amateurs almost star in this jaunty classic of Atomic Age suspense. Beneath the luster of the fast paced action and excitement lies a real message, or warning, about how mankind has let his technology and lust for violence outpace his understanding and respect for the precious gift of life. Seriously. There are some fascinating, if unwittingly conceived, observations on the heroic archetype to uncover if you watch closely. Without giving away any spoilers, I can definitely say that things happen and SOMEONE is responsible. Only a stupid, stupid person with an ancient juvenile mind would fail to appreciate the profundity of this astounding film. I would, however, concede that this film is not for everybody... I would recommend it only for people that have seen it and liked it. This DVD includes a genuinely interesting, nearly two-hour long documentary about the making of Plane Nine and the people involved.

ROBOT MONSTER touched me very deeply. However, I am happy to say that I have recovered enough to talk about it openly. At first I thought that I had just dreamt that I saw this film, but when I saw the DVD on my shelf I realized that it was, in fact, a real movie. It is actually hard to describe this film other than to say that it is literally like a fever dream, but I'll try. Ro-Man XJ2 is a beleaguered robot-gorilla in a diving helmet who can never seem to please his superiors or do anything right. He's charged with the daunting task of destroying all of humanity and, of course, he messes it up. You see, among the last few living Hoo-Manz (Ro-Man XJ2's affectionate term for humans) is a cutie of the female persuasion who makes Ro-Man XJ2 feel all tingly inside. This, of course, unravels into a charming tale of self-discovery and personal growth that will tug at your heartstrings while the fate of all hoomanity is in the balance. Yes, it's that good! In all seriousness, the reality of this infamous disaster's creation and the grief that haunted the people involved does make me sad. I just wish for the filmmakers to know that my friends and I enjoyed it thoroughly, and it made us better people for having seen it. After all, it is a noble occupation to entertain and make people happy. This DVD is 2D (the original theatrical release was 3D) and includes the pulse-pounding trailer.
