With a tantalizing "what-if?" scenario and a respectable cast of Hollywood veterans, The Final Countdown plays like a grand-scale episode of The Twilight Zone. It's really no more than that, and time-travel movies have grown far more sophisticated since this popular 1980 release, but there's still some life remaining in the movie's basic premise: What if a modern-era Navy aircraft carrier--in this case the real-life nuclear-powered U.S.S. Nimitz--was caught in an anomalous storm and thrust 40 years backwards in time to the eve of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor? Will the ship's commander (Kirk Douglas) interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst (Martin Sheen) convince him not to? Will a rescued senator from 1941 (Charles Durning) play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? Veteran TV director Don Taylor doesn't do much with the ideas posed by this potentially intriguing plot; he seems more interested in satisfying aviation buffs with loving footage of F-14 "Jolly Roger" fighter jets, made possible by the Navy's generous cooperation. That makes The Final Countdown a better Navy film than a full-fledged time-travel fantasy, but there's a nice little twist at the end, and the plot holes are easy to ignore. James Cameron would've done it better, but this popcorn thriller makes an enjoyable double-bill with The Philadelphia Experiment. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars If You Like "The Phildelphia Experiment", You Will Enjoy This Too........2007-06-27

While this film's special effects are very dated, the overall film is quite inventive and fun although it is not very original. The story has the stoic Kirk Douglass as the commander of the USS Nimitz, a nuclear aircraft carrier, that is accidentally (?) transported back to the day of Pearl Harbor's attack. Naturally, they take some time getting used to the idea of time travel, but once that sets in their bigger dilemma is deciding whether or not to change history and stop the pending attack on Pearl.

The story line is compelling and there are some intriguing plot twists. Also, the film is well-acted by very familiar faces in addition to Douglass such as the great character actor Charles Durning as a pivotal 1941 U.S. Senator and potential president to succeed FDR should history be altered, the regal Katherine Ross as his assistant, the always believable James Farentino as Douglass's right hand man who is a secret historian writing a book on Pearl Harbor, and the terrific and awfully young looking but ever-confident Martin Sheen (whose hairstyle changes with nearly every scene) who is a mysterious civilian "observer."

My only complaints about this film are the special effects which were poor even for its time, the dialogue which is stiff is some places and overwrought in others, and the absolutely horrific score which I wish was forgettable; it was best suited for a western and not a military film. My son jokingly said that he expected to see General Custer and his troops at any moment on the deck of the carrier. Other than that, this film is good fun, has an intriguing idea, and has some nice plot twists.

What would you do if you were in command of the U.S.S. Nimitz aircraft carrier (yes with F-14 tomcats) and you suddenly found yourself located exactly 2 days before the attack on pearl harbor, having gone through a swirly light, and loud noise. (they get knocked out by the noise)its the day before the attack on pearl habor. right down to radio frequencies being different its so unique. this is one of those rare films that came out and surprised many people with the cool idea of being in a place and time With everything needed to change history! then all thats left to decide is to change the past or not? this film is dated and is restored fairly well however its still a great film starring kirk Douglas. truly a classic great! 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Do they tamper, or do they not?.......2007-05-21

Story: The U.S.S. Nimitz, a nuclear aircraft carrier, encounters a strange storm in 1981 and, when the ship clears the storm, the crew eventually figures out that they have been catapulted back to 1941. Specifically, they end up one day before the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, and they are near Pearl Harbor. A fully-armed nuclear aircraft carrier, with a full complement of 1981 aircraft, right where it could do a lot of damage to the Japanese invasion force, possibly even destroy it. So, the question becomes, "Should they?" Should they tamper with history and re-write it? They are United States military servicemen, in a combat situation, and most the crew says, "Go for it!" But, what of the ramifications? That question becomes highlighted when a 1941 Japanese Zero blows up a 1941 private yacht, near the U.S.S. Nimitz, and the survivors are rescued by the 1981 Navy. Amongst those survivors is a powerful Senator, who could end up being Franklin Roosevelt's Vice President in 1944 (instead of Truman) and then succeed Roosevelt when he dies, thus changing politics from 1941 on.

Cast: The cast is impressive, with Kirk Douglas as the Captain of the Nimitz, Martin Sheen as a Department of Defense observer, Charles Durning as the arrogant, powerful, but basically ethical 1941 Senator Sam Chapman, Katharine Ross as Chapman's beautiful and intelligent assistant, and James Farentino as the Executive Officer of the Nimitz, who is also a history buff writing a book about the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

What was done right: I like Kirk Douglas, and I like how he did this role, with a mixture of intelligence, confidence, and command presence. I also like the premise, which would have horrified Star Trek's Captain Picard ("The Temporal Prime Directive! We must preserve the time-line!"). The footage of the aircraft was impressive, the plot twists were interesting, and I really enjoyed the small surprise at the end.

What could have been better: I did not care for the special effects, especially the temporal storm episodes. They seemed cheap to me, even by the standards of when the film was made (1980). The script was weak at times, with Martin Sheen's dialogue sounding melodramatic, and the melodramatic effect was sometimes exacerbated by a musical score that sounded soap-opera-ish at times.

Personal comment: Perhaps I like the premise of The Final Countdown more than most because I appreciate the manifestations of World War Two. My father was an American soldier when he met my mother in Belgium. No war means no meeting, no wedding bells, no me. I cannot say that my existence counters the horrors of World War Two, but I do appreciate the complex consequences of a world-wide event.

3 out of 5 stars 4 years before "The Philadelphia Experiment" there was ... The Final Countdown.......2007-04-28

I think "The Philadelphia Experiment" is better than this movie, but this one came out 4 years before that one. Imagine a US naval fleet being transported back 40 years to the day of the bombing of Pearl Harbor with the potential to change history forever. Essentially this is more brain candy than an action fest but anyone with an interest in maritime themes or fighter jets will love it, especially when F14s are scrambled to intercept the Japanese.

The ending doesn't really resolve anything (what could one expect? Nazi America because they never enter the war?... but with a ship like that on their side... oh heck you get the picture, this is brain candy more than anything else....) but at least it leaves you thinking and on top of that there are quite a few surprises along the way. This could have been a lot worse, but wasn't. Worth seeing, but get the Philly Experiment first.

Product Description

Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Raphael are back in an animated series that more closely follows the dark tone of the original comic books than did the comedy-driven 1980s version. With the help of Zen master Splinter (a mutated rat) and their human ally April O'Neil, the four ninja turtles battle New York City crime, their evil nemesis Shredder, and the mad scientist Baxter Stockman in a series of action-packed adventures. This volume continues the series with five more episodes.

5 out of 5 stars shredder was the coolest in the story arc!!!!.......2006-06-28

ok i've always liked shredder in seasons 1 and 2 but in season 3? wow!!! he was a huge robot here, then beating the turtles and splinter up like that? whoa now THAT'S an ultimate super-villain.my only complaint with this show is:zanramon. why didn't zanramon use the humungous robot suit like in the video game?oh well i guess they want to use him for season 7 or 8?

5 out of 5 stars Its a final battle between the Shredder and the Turtles! You won't want to be without this Dvd in your Tmnt Library!.......2006-05-12

This Dvd contains the Two-part finale of Season three, Exodus. This is it. For months, the Shredder has been collecting alien technology and the turtles have discovered what he plans to do with it. He plans to board a starship and conqur the Utrom homeworld. So our heroes take the fight to their most powerful enemy. But Agent Bishop decides that he has a say in all this as well, so the action heats up even more. It all comes down to one final decisive battle, but it is it one our green teens can win?
Stop reading now if you don't want to have the rest of the episodes spoiled. I have to say that I love this new Shredder. I mean, I'll always enjoy the Shredder of my youth. The old Tmnt 1987 Shredder, but this guy... He doesn't play around. He's the type of villain who makes you love to hate him because of his actions. He's not your normal Saturday morning cartoon villain. I mean, he broke both of Mikey's legs. Burnt Splinter pretty bad. Knocked Leonardo onto Karai's sword and caused him to be stabbed. I hope this isn't the last we see of Shredder. Karai makes a good stand in, but no one kicks shell like our man Saki. And having the turtles basicly lose the fight was interesting. You always expect the good guys to win in fights with villains, but this wasn't the case. Yeah, the turtles did win, but they got the living mess beat out of them.
This dvd also includes a few episodes from Season Iv. Cousin Sid, Dragon's Brew, and Bad day. The last two are wonderful. Bad Day especially because we get a bit of foreshadowing concerning the foot mystics and Karai that's very important later on in the season. Also, we get our first look at the Heart of Tengu. I'd not seen this ep before I watched Good Geens, but now I understand how it all fits together.
Ok, so this Dvd's a must have for the Tmnt 2003 animated series fan. So I strongly suggest you buy it.

1 out of 5 stars The ultimate cop out........2006-04-19

Although I always preferred the original TMNT show to the new one(the new show has to rely on flatulence jokes? Please), I always felt the new one was decent. However, since midway through the 3rd season, I have noticed that the quality of the show has been dropping much recently. Whereas seasons 1, 2, and the first half of season 3 were very dark and action packed, since then the show has become so childish and pathetic that it made seasons 3-7 of the old TMNT cartoon seem gloomy and depressing. There was one exception though: one episode which featured Donatello stuck in a nightmarish reality where Shredder ruled the Earth(think the old TMNT episode Shredderville on acid), and provided a very dark, disturbing look at what would happen if the Turtles would fail. That one in particular seemed to set the stage for the ultimate battle between Shredder and the Turtles, which was slated to occur at season 3's finale, and it started to become clear that not everyone would survive this hectic battle. And what do we get in return? A big ripoff.

The Turtles attempt to sacrifice themselves to stop the Shredder is main pointless, as the Utroms come in and save them at the last second. Shredder, instead of dying(and this cartoon is supposed to "follow" the comic!), just gets exiled, leaving it perfectly open for a return. Bishop is completely wasted. Baxter has become increasingly annoying as the series has gone on(a huge muscular robot? Once again, please). Hun seems to buy it, but is proven to be alive and well in season 4. Thanks for ruining the new TMNT show, 4Kids, just like you've ruined everything.

5 out of 5 stars Ninja's are the best!.......2006-02-24

This is not the best season of TMNT. That's not because the other seasons are better. It's just that nothing can be better than perfection and every episode is perfect just like ninjutsu itself. Please!

Thanks,
Donni

5 out of 5 stars Great Insights for Beginning and Experienced Lifters Alike.......2007-04-01

"The Final Countdown" is a DVD featuring professional bodybuilder Shawn Ray as he prepares to compete in the 1998 Mr. Olympia contest, which is the "Super Bowl" of professional bodybuilding. The video features Ray lifting weights, discussing his meal plan, and explaining principles to follow when choosing dietary supplements. Ray offers outstanding, detail-oriented insights on each of these topics to help beginners and veterans alike.

This makes "The Final Countdown" unique among professional bodybuilding documentaries. The video offers valuable advice not only to experienced bodybuilders preparing for their first contest, but to beginning- and intermediate-level weightlifters looking to achieve success in the gym. It serves as a great introduction to how bodybuilding works and how it can improve participants' lives over time.

Ray begins by explaining the training split and individual workout plans he uses to isolate specific body parts. Clips and detailed explanations from his back, chest, leg, and abdominal workouts are featured. He focuses on hitting each muscle group from a variety of different angles to better stimulate growth.

He addresses setting appropriate goals and expectations when choosing a workout partner. Finding a partner with similar intensity, drive, and ambition is vital because many free-weight exercises require the presence of a spotter. Finding someone who pushes their partner to try harder and to maximize the intensity of a workout can make the difference between getting good results and great results. Emphasizing this point is excellent advice for less-experienced bodybuilders who want to get off to a great start right out of the gate.

On diet and nutrition, Ray shows examples of meals he eats throughout a given day. Many bodybuilding DVDs offer protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake goals by listing target statistics, but "The Final Countdown" makes it much easier for the viewer to actually see what works. Ray explains which nutrient sources are good for building mass and when to take them in. Beginners who watch this video will see how much easier it is to follow a well-designed bodybuilding nutrition plan than many statistical guidelines make it sound.

The most outstanding section of the DVD addresses dietary supplements. Ray views supplements as minor tools that can be used to tweak an already well-balanced diet. He does not view them as a secret weapon for building mass. Most of the products he uses are micronutrients frequently exhausted by intense workouts that are difficult to obtain from foods. He emphasizes that whole-food sources of protein such as lean beef, chicken breast, pork tenderloin, and tuna are more valuable for building mass than protein powders, which should only be used when no food is available.

These are extremely important points. Many top-level bodybuilders understand the logic behind them, but seldom point them out to beginners and intermediates. Ray deserves an enormous amount of credit for highlighting them here.

In the end, Ray loses in the Mr. Olympia competition to Ronnie Coleman. But Shawn Ray remains one of the most consistent professional bodybuilders of all time - setting the record for most consecutive top-five finishes in the Olympia contest. He is also one of the sport's greatest ambassadors - providing outstanding advice to young people who are interested in pursuing bodybuilding to improve their lives.

"The Final Countdown" is an excellent introduction to bodybuilding strategies proven to work by a wide variety of celebrities and professional athletes from many different sports. People who view this DVD will understand the most important principles for building muscle over time.

This video is one of the top professional bodybuilding DVDs available on the market today. Other top-notch videos offering valuable insights to young lifters include "Titans Vol. 5: From Dream to Reality" featuring Darrem Charles and "Driven" featuring Mark Dugdale. But Shawn Ray has done the best job of cutting right to chase and showing exactly what works. Other professional athletes would do well to emulate his commitment to giving back to the fans.

Fist of Fear is the first feature. It'a a bit campy but isn't most 70's movies? The archival footage of Bruce Lee is worth the purchase of this one.

The Final Countdown is one awesome flick. It stars also stars a young D'urville Martin a.k.a. "Willie Greene" from Dolemite. You've never seen Billy Dee Williams in such a powerful role,a black revolutionary. The racial tension in LA back in the 70's are shown in this one-and SHOWN WELL!

    Customer Reviews:

See also the following review for better insight than I offered:
