4 out of 5 stars For Fans of Campy Sci-Fi and Phillip K. Dick.......2007-03-29

Filmed in the Montreal area during that period of time in the 90s when it was economically advantageous to shoot movies in Quebec, Screamers is a loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "Second Variety". It is a throw-back to the days when campy sci-fi was still a marketable genre, it feels more late 80s than mid 90s. Peter Weller is seems to fit comfortably into this genre with just enough over-acting to not compromise his integrity.

Personally, I really loved the scenes that involved the screamers themselves: mechanical devices reminiscent of rats sporting razor sharp saw-blades in their heads. They are programmed to eliminate the "enemy" in this post apocalyptic setting, but, in the tradition of all great sci-fi, SOMETHING GOES TERRIBLY WRONG(spoken in classic, cinematic threateningly low voice). All to say that many will end up with severed limbs.

Definately a fun movie to watch, despite its lacking somewhat in the second act. It turns out that two of my wife's cousins were extras in the final act of the movie when dozens of "davids" come marching out of the compound. Makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable for me.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2007-03-14

I loved this movie for it's sci-fi purity and simplicity. There's military, space, AI, mystery, suspense, nukes, drama, sexual tension, love... I'm planning to read more of the works from the writer that wrote the story the movie is based on. This is a classic sci-fi movie. Add it to your collection and get ready to watch it every 2 or 3 months.

3 out of 5 stars Close to Phil Dicks vision, but not quite.......2007-02-04

I have collected books written by Philip K. Dick for as long as I can remember, including over 100 of his short stories in the original publication edtion going back to 1952. I've got all movies related to him, inluding Barjo, which is really pretty good, as an aside. Even the Valis opera on CD which is kind of strange.

Anyway, this movie, as said elsewhere, is a very good B-movie. There are no A-list actors here, mediocre special effects and some dropped threads in the story line here and there. But in general is the kind of movie I expect to be shown on a Saturday afternoon scary movie matinee.

Don't watch this expecting a high intensity movie. There are parts that are slow, but for the most part it moves along in a fairly steady pace keeping you interested in it long enough to finish your popcorn.

The ending is expected and nothing is really a surprise. Almost looks like a grad school film project, but nothing wrong with that, look at Halloween and THX 1138.

So, neither 1 nor 5 stars, but in the middle. Find it used, well worth 5 bucks.

IT IS NOT WIDESCREEN AS ADVERTIZED!!!!

I have ordered and returned this product 3 times. It is not widescreen. There is no option to for viewing it as widescreen. Amazon has no explanation for the mistake and unfortunately they will not correct the web page. This leads to an interesting question. Why does Mr. Leach state in his review that the disk offers a widescreen option when it doesn't? Either Amazon is massively screwing up the order or he is not reviewing this actual disk from Amazon. If that's the case, he should not be providing a review on it.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ADAPTATION OF DICK'S SHORT STORY 'SECOND VARIETY' GETS THE MORBID & PARANOID ATMOSPHERE DOWN COLD.......2006-10-26

FIRST OFF: ALL SCI-FI GETS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT FROM ME

I must admit that this type of film, gritty futuristic sci-fi set on another planet, would have to be horrid for me to not like it. Nevertheless, I do believe that, objectively speaking, 'Screamers', based on the short story 'Second Variety' by Philip K. Dick, is an excellent and worthwhile film.

***---> $20 MILLION FOR A B-FILM?

It seems rather amazing that by 1995, a 20-million dollar budget would only produce a 'B film' which the critics have referred to as "budget challenged"! I do agree that more effort should have been made to create the setting for this film, but would that really have made it more effective? 'Screamers' still manages to create a rather chilling atmosphere where it feels like something horrible is about to happen, but we don't quite know what. The world of 'Screamers' seems real enough and the bleakness seems totally appropriate to the subject. Nevertheless, there is something in 'Screamers' that seems like it was filmed with the least amount of scenery, and whatever was on hand was adapted to fit the story. Maybe this is true and maybe not. In any event, the film still works and does not feel like it is suffering from a lack of anything, specifically, that a bigger budget would have bought.

***---> IN A NUTSHELL [there may be plot spoilers below]

Here we have a planet that was exploited for a new form of energy which fizzled out as it generated an immense, toxic, radioactive waste as a by-product of its production. Two factions collided over the issue and it is now 20 years later. The year is 2078 and there is little left of the planet Sirius 6B, once a real garden spot, we are told. A lone soldier comes to the alliance bunker where Marshall Joseph Hendricksson [Peter Weller] is commanding, with a message which seems to offer a peaceful solution to the war that has ravaged the planet. From here the story goes on the road, a kind of trek that we have seen in the 'Wizard of Oz'. Marshall Hendricksson departs from the bunker with one new arrival in search of his N.E.B.s counterpart to sort out the meaning of the peace offering.

--- ON THE WAY --- EXPOSITION AS WE HIKE TOWARD THE NEB's BUNKER

Everything you will ever want to know about the situation on Sirius 6B and more is delivered via a thinly-disguised expository lump. This comes in the form of Hendricksson telling the new arrival, 'Ace' [Andrew Lauer], who he has taken with him on the trek, everything WE need to know in order to better understand this rather meandering tale. On the way to meet with his NEBs counterpart, the Marshall and Ace find a little boy who appears to be orphaned, several NEBs stragglers, and an attractive black marketeer [Jennifer Rubin]. All of these people have a distinct and vital role in the story, and little is as it seems.

--- AND OF COURSE THERE ARE SCREAMERS!!!!!

These screamers are the real deal here and we never really know what is happening with them and what motivates them because the Alliance that created them, represented here by Marshall Hendricksson, doesn't know either. We do know that they are evolving and upgrading themselves in many rather scary ways and that nobody is safe as long as they are in the same universe as human beings.

And there lies the heart of the story -- the Screamers. Just what is their significance to the human race????? After you see the film you will know!

Description

Documentarian Carla Garapedian traces the history of modern-day genocide - and genocide denial - from the fertile "Holy Mountains" of Anatolia to the current atrocities in Darfur. The documentary is as shattering as it is powerful, which includes live performance footage and interviews with System of a Down, the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning rock band, all of whose members are of Armenian descent. The film is laced with seven of the band's songs from "Holy Mountains" to "P.L.U.C.K." to the #1 hit "B.Y.O.B." that illuminate the band's views on political and social issues

Garapedian (the acclaimed director/producer of such documentaries as "Lifting the Veil," and "Children of the Secret State") weaves an intricate tapestry of historical footage, current day interviews of survivors who witnessed the Ottoman Turks genocide against those of Armenian decent in 1915, their relatives, concert footage, and even footage of a confronted Dennis Hastert in the Capital Rotunda! Garapedian's documentary shows without ambivalence that until we truly recognize our past, our history is doomed to repeat itself.

Funny thing. This DVD is scheduled for release in the US and Canada on June 26. The Amazon Canada site is clear and definite about the details, but the Amazon US site has obscured all concrete info. "Release date to be announced: The release date for this DVD has not been finalized." Check out the different announcements. Why the disparity? Which is it?

5 out of 5 stars Can'r Beat It.......2006-01-25

I don't care what your idea of punk rock is, this concert captures a place and a time in American music that defies definition. The Screamers were and will always be one of the best punk rock bands. . .period. The recording may not be top notch, but who cares. The band never recdorded and this may be the only chance for anyone of us to experience even a fraction of what they may have been like up close. Plus, if you look closely, Jello Biafra just happens to fall by. An absolute must have for any punk rock collector!!!

5 out of 5 stars Completely and totally essential.......2004-12-06

This DVD is without a doubt not just a great performance, but a snapshot in time of one of the most different and essential punk bands ever. They were never properly recorded and their live shows were incendiary. As a result, this DVD is a document that captures the brilliance, fire, and innovation of a band WAY ahead of their time. The next best thing to a time machine...the Screamers rule.

5 out of 5 stars Rerelease by Target Video ESSENTIAL VIEWING........2004-10-12

It looks like Target is finally rereleasing some of their coveted and out-of-print live videos from back in the day and if this release is any example, they've done their homework. It doesn't look like there will be any extras on this, but if there are it could even eclipse the video version (which I've seen go for $75 on eBay).
To the uneducated, The Screamers were a great bunch of fellas from the mid-Seventies punk scene who had roots in Ze Whiz Kids from Seattle, the Northwest new wave band The Tupperwares, and the Cockettes (Namely in lead frontman Tomato du Plenty).
Their performances became legend and has since spawned a cottage industry of synth punk (or the more current "synthpunk") genrefied bands around the USA.
As far as I'm concerned, this DVD is required viewing for any music fan.

2 out of 5 stars No, I cannot really come up with a good reason to watch this.......2002-11-02

"Girls Schools Screamers" is the only film directed by John P. Finegan and I think the number of cast members whose images were actually ever seen on celluloid ever again can be counted on one hand. The plot has seven beautiful coeds at an exclusive finishing school spending the night locked in a dark mansion where they are "finished" off, one by one (the original tag line for the film was "The Finishing School That Finished Them Off!" which is actually better than the other one, which is "How Much Gut Wrenching Fright Can You Stand?"). You have probably already notice the big spoiler about this film (it has no nudity and little gore, but no nudity), but for me the jaw dropper was the "rationale" behind the blood bath, which we get from the opening tale of days gone bye, because when it comes to vengeance from beyond the grave I have to think that "kissing" is a relatively minor sign. Once the killing begins the question is whether the smart girls can figure it out before they become the next victims. No fair rooting for the killer. The Australian version of "Girls School Screamers" runs two minutes longer and while there may well be those who would want a director's cut version to be available on future DVDs, I am not one of them. I was surprised that this is a Troma film because it is simply the least Troma-like Troma film I have ever seen. The DVD has the theatrical trailer, productions stills, and the usual Troma Studio tour, Troma intelligence test, and some scenes from Troma's Edge TV show. Still, at some point you are going to have to actually watch "Girl School Screamers." Bet you fall asleep before they get to the parts you might actually want to watch. Why does this film get 2 stars? Because single stars are reserved for snuff films.

3 out of 5 stars Not Enough..........2002-07-18

Well. What can I say? This movie doesn't have enough senseless nudity to be called 'Girl School Screamers'. That would be like a movie called 'Womens Prison Screamers' with no shower scenes. That's it...I'm callin the mayor.

1 out of 5 stars Skip it, NO NUDITY!.......2000-03-30

I like troma films quite a bit and was very disappointed in this. You'd think with a name with 'GIRLS' and 'SCREAMERS' in it there would be some naughty skin. There was more nudity in Disney's Aladin. Skip it Troma Fans!

3 out of 5 stars SUSPENSEFULL a TROMA FILM.......2000-03-01

First of this is a TROMA film. And TROMA rules the indie horror industry. This film was done in 86 and what stood out the most was much of the film had little gore. Proving once again you don't need gore to make a good horror film. The suspense in this film is A.O.K. and is a neat little midnight flick.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful restored version.......2007-05-03

I'm not writing this review so much for newcomers as for old fans of ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN. If you've seen earlier versions of this film, you haven't really seen this film. This is the MUST SEE version for longtime fans.

I've seen several versions of ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN (aka SCREAMERS) over the past 20+ years. The American TV broadcast version. The VHS version. But this restored DVD version has many differences:

* This version is widescreen, and it makes a difference. The director has framed some beautiful compositions, which are lost on full screen.

* Many restored scenes.

* Earlier versions had a 10 minute scene from ANOTHER FILM (by Roger Corman) edited onto the front. This restored version drops that scene, which had characters that were (naturally) unrelated to the rest of the film's characters or story.

* This version has done a beautiful job restoring the color and sound. Great music.

So what's this film about? It's yet another 1970s Italian exploitation ripoff, of sorts. Richard Johnson is the usual rich white guy who rules an uncharted island and conducts mad science experiments (although he does it through another scientist). They're turning islanders into fishmen so as to salvage the lost gold of Atlantis.

If you like Italian exploitation films, if you think Johnson is a great villain (although he was also a fine hero in 1963's THE HAUNTING), if you think Barbara Bach is gorgeous, if you like killer fishmen and Italian exploitation films, you should love this one.

Lead actors Claudio Cassinelli, Richard Johnson, and Barbara Bach also appeared in another Italian exploitation JAWS ripoff, BIG ALLIGATOR RIVER (aka, THE GREAT ALLIGATOR). I also highly recommend that film

Yes, this is a PAL version, so you'll need a multi-region DVD player. The DVD has both Italian and English soundtracks, take your pick.

There's also a one hour "making of" featurette, with interviews of the key creative people, but unfortunately, it's entirely in Italian. Not even any subtitles. The trailer is also in Italian.

AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!

***---> $20 MILLION FOR A B-FILM?
