A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That's pretty much all there is to it, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake), would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned and mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet that's headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may the be most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramer's atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father and daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; and an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera--so that his little boy won't realize that he's been struck blind. With Morgan Freeman as the president of the United States. --David Chute
Description
In DEEP IMPACT, Leo Beiderman (Elijah Wood), joins a field study for his high school's Astronomy Club and discovers a new comet that unfortunately is headed for Earth. While scientists build a cave to prevent the extinction of the human race, they estimate that only 800,000 people can be selected to survive the "Deep Impact." The threat of a comet ending the world quickly sends Americans into a panic until the president announces a plan to send astronauts on a mission to destroy the comet before it reaches earth.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition)..........2007-06-02

Tea Leoni played a convincing character in this movie. Morgan Freeman was nothing short of outstanding as President in this film. Great story that makes you think! Five stars!

3 out of 5 stars The real disaster wasn't the asteroid.......2007-04-10

The governments of the world find out about an asteroid on a cataclysmic path with our planet. Our government decides We the People are too stupid and brutish to be trusted to act responsibly with that knowledge, and they use billions of our tax dollars to build a massive shelter for favored citizens, all with great secrecy, with a few remaining slots to be rationed out to the taxpayers via lottery.

The catastrophe wasn't as bad as anticipated, and had the U.S. government not decided to use our tax dollars as their personal piggy bank to provide an "ark" for politicians and their families and friends, individual citizens could have built shelters or made other provisions that might likely have let them survive the disastrous strike that sent a massive tidal wave surging halfway across the country.

The real disaster was that millions of U.S. citizens died, but all the politicians were saved. Yeah, that's what I want when it's time to rebuild civilization: the privileged political class ready to resume Big Government As Usual. Ugh!

Of course, the movie was fiction. The bunkers our government has built for themselves and not us, those are real. While I pray such survivalist measures are never necessary, it does give one a moment of pause to realize that we've financed the safety of a pampered ruling class, while they're telling us to stock up on duct tape and a month's worth of canned goods in case of emergency.

3 out of 5 stars This or That.......2007-03-19

Armageddon resulted in a big love story with big explosions and bigger tear jerker at the end with no time for filler. That was okay, and Armageddon was what it was. Armageddon was for the eye.

Deep Impact resulted in a very storytelling kind of way of the small bits of human psyche and how one would deal with the end of the world coming while saving the big explosion for the final 5 minutes of the film. And for Deep Impact, that was okay. Deep Impact was - sorta - for the mind.

To be honest, Deep Impact was a pretty dull viewing. I was bored with it at first, until I let myself get involved with the characters. And I could only do that once I looked past the so-so acting of Tea Leoni and the annoyance of Elijah Wood and LeeLee Sobeiski's performances. When it came down to the end, I was more interested in the mother of Tea's character, and the parents of LeeLee's characters. Vanessa Redgrave, who played Tea's mother, is always a wonderful actress to behold, and although given limited screentime, her character was the most endearing in the movie.

Deep Impact is the dull asteroid movie that is for an acquired taste.

2 out of 5 stars Boring disaster.......2007-01-21

I'm giving this two stars because it's just marginally better than the totally absurd "Day After Tomorrow". It starts off pretty well and ends moderately well, but the entire middle is BORING. It's very hard to care about any of the characters, most of whom seem to be doing everything they can to be shallow idiots, if not totally brain dead. Their scripted actions are, in many cases, directly opposite to the real actions of people in disasters, such as we have seen in the World Trade Center or in the 2006 tsunami. Perhaps that is an observation from hind sight, since this movie was made long before we had such disasters to judge it by.

The one real person in the entire cast is Morgan Freeman as the President of the US. The worst is Tea Leoni, who sleepwalks through the picture.

As for the destruction of NYC, that is pretty good, much better than in some of the other disaster movies I have seen ("Fourth of July", "Day After Tomorrow", etc.). There is one ironic and sad moment, as the World Trade Center is inundated, but not totally destroyed. But, of course, this movie was made before....

2 out of 5 stars Why is Tea Leoni an actress? The woman cannot act.......2007-01-21

Tea Leoni gets the Ben Affleck award for acting malpractice. The woman cannot act, and why anyone would give her the starring role in any film is a complete mystery. This woman not only cannot act, at least in this film she appears to be stoned on some powerful drug. And I am being kind. (Very kind.) Granted that she is an ectomorphic blonde, but come on. There are others out there with true acting ability. Leoni has none.

Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall save this film from being an utter turkey, but only by a slight margin. Freeman as the President of the United States is very, very good, and he is really the savior of this otherwise awful film. This one is a stinker, but the special effects just barely make it watchable to the end. I never tire of watching New York City get destroyed. This saves the film, just as the destruction of New York has saved several other otherwise horrible films. Only barely though.

This anthology of wrestling mayhem from Extreme Championship Wrestling promises an "emotional barbed wire hell," and it delivers. In one gory match, Terry Funk, whose specialty is taking more punishment than any sane person could stand, meets the evil and vicious Sabu in a ring surrounded with barbed wire. In their battle for the ECW World Heavyweight championship, it doesn't take long for them to be smeared with blood, beating the hell out of each other while hopelessly entangled in strands of wire. It eventually takes several men with tools to cut them free as the announcer proclaims that the action just witnessed is too brutal to ever be shown on television. In another match Steve Austin, before he became "Stone Cold" and attained primetime stardom, battles in a "three-way dance" with other notorious bad asses Mikey Whipwreck and the Sandman. And Mick Foley, in his "Cactus Jack" persona, tangles with Terry Funk and gets burned (literally).

Bonus footage includes an "aerial war" between Japanese and Mexican wrestlers that provides some diversion from the usual hardcore brutality, and in what's billed as the "Original Catfight," bad girls Beulah McGillicuddy and Francine drive the crowd wild by shedding all civility along with most of their clothing. While the production of this DVD is reasonably professional, that doesn't detract from the decidedly gnarly and low-rent feel ECW fans adore. Fans of more tame and cartoonish wrestling should be warned that the blood does flow freely in some of these matches. --Robert J. McNamara

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best DVDs ever........2007-04-19

Every match is a classic. ECW was so much better than it is now!!!! Why can't Vince grow some grapefruits and bring back at least at SMALL PART of what ECW used to be? If you like wrestling this is a MUST BUY. I have watched this MANY times over and it's still entertaining. This stuff will never be duplicated!

5 out of 5 stars Real ECW.......2007-02-12

This is ECW, the way it was meant to be seen. Not a watered down version on Sci Fi. I cant understand how they released dvds and still managed to go bankrupt. WCW never released any dvds, but ECW had no money (apparently) and still released quailty action. A diffent buy if your a ECW fan.

4 out of 5 stars Stone Cold, Barbed Wire, Ring Breaking, Catfighting Action.......2006-05-28

This is basically a compilation of matches from various ECW TV shows & PPV's with an introduction to each match by Joey Styles.

ECW Champion Mickey Whipwreck vs. Sandman vs. Steve Austin - This was Austin's second (and last) match in ECW & was better than his first one. The match itself was nothing much past that historical factor as it was mostly brawling between all three men.

Barbed Wire Match: ECW Champion Terry Funk vs. Sabu - This was the most brutial match in ECW history as they just got so entangled in the barbed wire that they had to be cut apart for minutes after the match. Even manager Bill Alfonzo was bleeding during this match. Certain parts of the match had Sabu's bicept ripped apart & the barbed wire was wrapped around Funk's neck to the point where he kept getting poked whenever he breathed. It's so violent that if you watched the "Bloodsport" DVD that WWE put out, Paul Heyman said (and I quote) "I never did another one because nobody could top that one...and I didn't want them to."
(Also available on "Bloodsport: ECW's Most Violent Matches")

Television Champion Taz vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - This was from Living Dangerously '98. This was really something to witness as it looked like a "david vs. goliath" match just from looking at the two but Taz did more than hold his own against Bigelow. Certain moments in the match include Bigelow punching through a piece of table straight to Taz's face & Taz being knocked out from hitting his head on the guardrail while suplexing Bigelow off the ramp into the crowd. The ending was really shocking & made a heavy impact to the point that then-WWF writer Terry Taylor openily admitted that he stole that idea & used it in WWF during an angle involving Undertaker & Big Show.
(Also available on "Rise & Fall Of ECW")

The Sandman & Terry Funk vs. Cactus Jack & Shane Douglas - This was one of the wild brawls that ECW was remembered for as they had sinapore canes, guardrails in the ring, a toolbox complete with tools, and even a flaming branding iron. A classic ECW hardcore brawl from the early days of Extreme.
(Also available on "Bloodsport: ECW's Most Violent Matches")

Masato Tanaka & Jerry Lynn vs. Mike Awesome & Justin Credible - Their seperate fueds mixed with each other for this tag team match that actually came off very well. You get a good mix of wrestling here that you would expect from Lynn/Credible along with the stiff chair & table shots that you expect from Tanaka/Awesome.

Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Psicosis - This was from the late days of ECW where Psicosis returned to the ECW arena maskless (thanks WCW!). It was a good clash here between the two which showcases why Psicosis was underused in WCW for those who have only saw him there or in WWE as one of the Mexicools. Again, a good clash but nothing really memorable.

Francine vs. Beulah McGullicuty - This was dubbed as "The Original Catfight" and the catch was that Stevie Richards (Francine's boyfriend) was the referee while at the same time, he was tag team champions with Raven...who's girlfriend was Beulah. This I can't even classify as a match as it was just a segment to have hot women stripped down to their underwear & put over a storyline between all four participants. This was really nothing special unless your fans of Francine or Beulah...or love seeing hot women in their underwear.

Beulah McGillicutty vs. Bill Alfonso (in the Extreme Moments section) - Paul Heyman has called this match "5 of the most intense minutes in ECW history" as Alfonzo was nothing more than a 150 lbs. manager/former referee was bleeding so much that he makes Steve Austin's at WrestleMania 13 look like a papercut while Beulah put on some moves herself that were very impressive for being 105 lbs. untrained female. These two put on a better 5 minute match between each other that is actually better than alot of wrestlers can put together in 10 mins.
(Also available on "Bloodsport: ECW's Most Violent Matches")

The DVD extras the "Steve-amanic" promo and a hidden "Monday Niquil" promo by Steve Austin, and a promo by Cactus Jack. There's also a collage of the "Pulp Fiction" ECW promos including J.T. Smith, the Dudley's (before D-Von), Eliminators, Tommy Dreamer, Cactus Jack & Raven, Terry Funk, Bill Alfonzo, Tod Gordon, Steve Austin, Woman & Sandman, Mickey Whipwreck, Stevie Richards, Public Enemy along with those who have passed through ECW for a short time like the Steiner Brothers, Konnan, and Rey Mysterio.

The only flop I would say on this was the Beulah vs. Francine match (unless your just a fan of girls in their underwear) so I would recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best ECW comp, but some good matches here........2004-03-09

Here we go:

1. Mikey Whipwreck Vs. Steve Ausin Vs. The Sandman - 3-way elimination match - Whipwreck won the ECW Championship and a fluke and now finds himself between 2 pissed-off drunks. Should've been good, but was pretty boring and way too long. *1/2

2. Terry Funk Vs. Sabu - Barbed Wire match - Sabu wrestled this match shirtless, which is insane in a barbed-wire match. Both men get shredded like crazy with Sabu actually having to tape his arm mid-match because it was bleeding to bad. ***1/2

3. Taz Vs. Bam Bam Bigalow - Kinda slow with bug moves here and then, including a BIG move to finish the match. ***

4. Terry Funk/Sandman Vs. Cactus Jack/Shane Douglas - Wild ECW brawl that uses chairs, tables, canes and everything else they could find. ****

5. Masata Tanaka/Jerry Lynn Vs. Mike Awesome/Justin Credible - 2 feuds collide in 1 tag team match. Awesome/Tanaka is always great, but throw in Jerry Lynn and you've got a great match. ****

6. Psicosis Vs. Tajiri - Both men work the mat with Tajiri kicking the crap outta Psicosis and Psych throwing the aerial moves in between. ****1/2

7. Francine Vs. Beulah - Raven and Steven Richards are guest refs. Francine is with Steven whose with Raven whose with Beulah.. I think I have that right. Not really a match, but you almost see puppies! - DUD

8. Fonzie Vs. Beulah - (In extra section) - Fonzie must've eaten 10 asperins with his bottle of vodka cause he taps a Mutoh scale bloodbath. Like the barbed wire match, it's actually disturbing, but knowing Fonzie somehow survived a loss of most of his blood is amazing!

4 out of 5 stars It is EXTREME........2003-09-02

Sandman v. Mikey Whipwreck v. Steve Austin
Slow match but there is some technical wrestling mostly from Austin. Austin eliminates Mikey with the Stun Gun. Sandman pins Austin after Woman puts Brass Knucks on the Sandman's hand and he knocks out Austin but Austin gets his foot on the bottom rope yet the ref misses. An ok match.

Sabu v. Terry Funk in a Barb wire match
If you saw the Sandman/Raven Barb wire Death Match from ECW Extreme Evolution
then this match makes that match look like a WCW Hardcore match.
You won't believe what happens to Bill Alfonzo.

The Sandman and Terry Funk vs. Cactus Jack and "The Franchise" Shane Douglas. not a bad tornado match.

Taz v. Bam Bam Bigelow
Both these guys put up a hell of a fight. A great brawl and one hell of an ending.

Masato Tanaka and Jerry Lynn v. Mike Awesome and Justin Credible
One of the better ECW tag team matches. Good match. Tanaka gets Awesome Bombed through a table.

BONUS:Yoshihiro Tajiri v. Psicosis
A great high flying, high impact match. A lot of counters and reversals. I cringe every time I see and hear one of Tajiri's kicks. He has some of the most effective kicks in wrestling today. A 5 Star match Bar none.

BONUS: CATFIGHT Francine v. Beulah McGuillicuty
[Female] Show with Stevie Richards as the referee. He acts like an idiot, as expected and lets Raven interfere more than once. ...P>This is a good dvd over all. There are some really hardcore matches. The Psicosis/Tajiri match and the Terry Funk/Sabu match are my two favorites as far as the action goes. The Taz/Bam Bam Bigelow match was not short on action either. I recomend this for any ECW fan. ECW Deep Impact gets a 9 out-of-10 Four and a Half stars.

    Product Description

In the aftermath of a major earthquake under Suraga Bay, Misaki (a young girl) and Toshiro (a pilot of a deep sea submarine) are rescued from a ruined city street just as leaking gasoline ignites. Reiko Abe arrives just in time, lowered from a helicopter. Scientists predict that Japan will sink within 40 years, due to subduction of a tectonic plate to the west. However, Dr. Tadokoro, who leads an oceanic scientific team that includes Toshiro, calculates that this will happen far sooner, in only 338 days. He presents his findings to Prime Minister Yamamoto who decides to create a new department for impending disaster relief assigning Saoro Takamori to cover the new duties, since of all his ministers she will take it seriously but also bring "heart" to the process. As further earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions devastate Japan, the government pleads with other countries to take refugees. Yamamoto flies to China to negotiate relocations there, but his plane is destroyed by a volcanic eruption. Saoro fills the resulting vacuum in leadership and decides that Dr. Tadokoro's plan to blow holes in the disintegrating tectonic tectonic plate is the best remaining hope to not only save the people, but what remains of the country itself. Ironically it was her career that hastened their divorce 20 years earlier. Misaki becomes orphaned following her mother's death from earthquake injuries, and bonds with Reiko who was similarly rescued from, but orphaned by the Kobe quake. Toshiro is offered a job in England and wants Reiko and Misaki to come with him, but Reiko feels bound to help others and refuses to leave. Fellow submarine pilot Shinji Yuki also turns down Toshiro's offer to work with him in England. Drillships place massive explosives deep in the crust, but the detonator is not placed properly and Yuki dies attempting to place it by submarine.

In July 2005, NASA's Deep Impact probe collided with comet Tempel 1, providing the first-ever glimpse of the interior of one of these "dirty snowballs" and valuable insight into the formation of our solar system. NASA's brilliant, but risky, plan to send a tiny, copper-plated probe hurtling directly towards the city-sized comet at a speed of 23,000 mph was a smashing success. The resulting explosion of particles provided experts with new data about the composition of life-building materials that were present in the early solar system. Watch as state-of-the-art spacecraft animation and stunning location photography bring the mission to life, taking viewers behind the scenes of NASA's high-profile mission. Follow the entire journey of the doomed Deep Impact probe, from its initial design to the extraordinary challenge of building a spacecraft that's intended to be smashed to pieces.
