Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Michael Radford's adaption of George Orwell's foreboding literary premonition casts John Hurt and Suzanna Hamilton as lovers who must keep their courtship secret. Aside from criminalizing sex and interpersonal relationships, the ruling party in their country Oceania both fabricates reality and reconstructs history for the sake of oppressing the masses. They brainwash their citizens via large, propaganda-spewing TV monitors installed in their living rooms, which also inspect everyone's activities. Hurt and Hamilton are among the few we see desperately trying to fight the system by keeping control of their thoughts and beliefs. While the atmosphere becomes a bit too stifling at times, the images are quite striking with their muted colors and dilapidated sets. In an interesting bit of casting, Richard Burton costars (in his final role) as a government agent who surreptitiously exposes Hurt to the ideas of resistance. Unlike many like-minded films, 1984 does not offer a flashy vision of the future, but then that aspect makes it feel all the more real. In an age when more and more of our everyday activities are being scrutinized, Big Brother may not be so far off after all. --Bryan Reesman

Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has

Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Usul Muad'Dib Atreides
something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick

Sting as Feyd-Rautha
Stewart, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt. --Jim Emerson

DVD features
Melange fans have a lot to be excited about with this impressive edition of Dune, though the "Extended Edition" label is a bit misleading. If you are expecting the mythic 4 hour "David Lynch preferred" version that is rumored to be sitting in a vault, don't get your hopes up. This isn't it. In an attempt to quickly sober spice-fueled giddy fans, producer Raffaella De Laurentiis (daughter of Dino De Laurentiis) immediately reveals in the 'Deleted Scenes' introduction that the rumored 4 hour version is just that; a rumor. What this DVD set does contain is the 2 Hour 17 Minute original theatrical release digitally remastered, available for the first time in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 surround sound. The presentation on this edition is a drastic improvement from the original letterboxed release. On the flipside of the DVD

Knife fight!
is the alternate 2 hour 57 minute version cut for television. As many fans know, this 'extended' version was disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee;" the name used by directors whose film was taken away and recut against their wishes. There is some new material in the 14 minutes of deleted scenes offering a bit more background into the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the Kwisatz Haderach prophecy and the Fremen culture and their struggle. All other extras focus on the international production crew of Dune including the design team, special effects, and short documentaries on the miniature models and wardrobe designs. Disappointingly, there are no appearances in the bonus features by any of the original cast or Lynch himself. However, many of the production crew members talk openly about working with David Lynch and his artistic involvement in the visual process. To cap it off, this edition comes in a very stylish and sturdy DVD tin that opens like a keep case. --Rob Bracco

5 out of 5 stars Dune: epic classic, timeless, powerful..........2007-06-20

For all those cheese-balls who criticized "Dune" when it came out in 1984, you're a bunch of goobs! I've read all the books, especially the first two books several times. It is a complicated environmental, political, religious, mythological masterpiece from Frank Herbert. The movie was poorly-received in theatres because most folks that went to see it back in the day couldn't stand to sit for more than two hours, never read the books (they are heady and complex), and didn't make much of an attempt to really get into the movie. Likewise, due to having shot way too long a movie, the DiLaurentiis folks had to edit the movie hardcore so it left some gaps.

All-in-all, I was eleven years old when I saw this movie back in the 80's an I understood it just fine. I came to grasp it even more as I read the novels.

The movie is basically about royal families competing against one another for a substance known as "the spice," which represents crude oil on earth. The fremen are a parallel-Muslim-type culture that lives in the desert where the "oil" or "spice" is harvested. Complex politics and intrigue are everywhere.

The acting is SUPERB! Kyle MacLachlan was the best choice is the world to play Paul, Sting was perfect as Feyd, good ole' Kenneth MacMillan was the GREATEST Baron Harkonnen ever, and overall there was an excellent international cast. The costumes, backdrops, scenery, and TOTO SOUNDTRACK were all unforgettable. I'm a huge Toto fan anyway (saw 'em in concert recently)...David Paich, the keyboardist and main songwriter for Toto delivered some music that will give you goose pimples.

I like this extended edition because it shows deleted scenes that add SO MUCH to this movie!!

Dune is quirky at times with some whispering and drawn-out scenes but in general it is so much fun, so heady, so vast, and despite the wild fantasy world we see in it, it seems believable at times. Fun trip. Worth every penny....

It's worth the spice to buy!

Loved it, but really want the extra-long version.

4 out of 5 stars I don't know why I like this, I just do-.......2007-05-11

I am a huge fan of the entire Dune legacy. The films, the mini series... books (Frank Herbert's- haven't read the son's yet because it always tics me off when something good is dragged out long after the originator is gone... who knows if these books were part of Frank's vision- BUT I digress)

Where was I, oh yeah. Love Dune. Though this version is not true to the book, it has some true merit. You have to remember that it is from the 80s and forgive the effects, but if you are looking for sort of a cliff notes version of the storyline, this is it. Just don't watch it in place the book and go to a book club thinking you know the story.

Besides, you get to see all sorts of actors much younger than they are now, Patrick Stewart, Kyle M, Sting, and that dude from Quantam Leap just to name a few.

Good movie fodder to watch, and who cares what happens next- for he is the Kwisatz Haderach.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it then and I still like it now, more than ever..........2007-05-11

David Lynch's vision and take on Dune may not compare to the book from which it is taken, but as a stand alone movie, both in its theatrical, as well as in its lengthened (directed by Alan Smithee...) version, are a product that can be considered valid.

The story is there, in its essence, the characters are there, although not really all as in the Novel, but then there is really no need for all of them, since it would just complicate an already intricate storyline.

Suffice it to say that this movie, even after all these many years, can still stand a comparison with newer Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies.
The style, the actors, the music and the scenery alone, lend it an aura of mythical proportions and this makes it far more than just another "cult" movie, but rather the vision of a true artist, confronted with a vision of another artist and mixing his own to the latter, and in this, David Lynch truly excels.

The cast includes a very young Kyle MacLachlan, masters of the trade, such as Max von Sydow, Juergen Prochnow, Patrick Stewart, Sian Phillips, Jose Ferrer, Freddie Jones and many others, whose talents are undisputed to give life to so bigger-than-life characters.

For the first time ever, we get both "takes" on the movie on a single, double-sided disc. One, as mentioned before, the Theatrical version, and the second, the lengthened TV version of the same, in 2.35:1 ratio and in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Stereo.

For the price this is a well worthy buy, unless you already own an HD-DVD Player, in which case you may also opt to have that copy, but be warned, that copy only includes the theatrical version.

3 out of 5 stars Before there was Star Wars.......2007-04-15

Some fun facts:
Dune was written and published in 1965
Star Wars was released in 1978
Dune the movie was released in 1984

I first saw Star Wars in the theaters in 1978 and became hooked to the series.
I never watched Dune or read it until recently and this is my take on the whole thing.

When I sat down and watched Dune I was surprised by the cheap sets and poor special effects. Star Wars had this movie beat hands down.
However, when it comes to the story of Dune: it is a great and amazing plot and adventure. I can now see where George Lucas was inspired for Star Wars.

As far as this DVD it has lots of hours of entertainment. You just have to get past some of the cheesy sets and filming.

All in all its a good DVD to have in your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Great memories, lousy audio.......2007-07-03

As a lifelong tigers fan, i sat down to play this dvd with high hopes. i had the 1968 and 1984 highlight films on vhs, ordered from MLB several years ago. Somehow, they flubbed on the transfer. At several points during the films, the audio drops out and the video jumps -- who watched this in the editing room and approved the final print? It is very disconcerting to watch this. If you are a Tiger fan, you'll likely suffer this to watch your heroes win again, but wince during the key moments that are dropped from the audio track. They need to re-issue a clean version and i need to get a refund.

Cirque du Soleil's Anniversary Collection 1984-2005 is a 12-disc retrospective of the Canadian troupe's distinctive brand of performance, involving the fantastic feats of acrobatics and athleticism, balance and contortion; the single-ring techno circus; the multicolored lights and costumes; the abstract story lines of fantasy and self-discovery; the music that fuses rock, New Age, and various world influences; and the madcap clowns that prey on their live audiences. The programs included are La Magie Continue (1986); Cirque Reinvente (1989); Nouvelle Experience (1991); Saltimbanco (1994), the 1994 documentary retrospective A Baroque Odyssey; the Amsterdam-set Quidam (1999); Allegria (1999), the live Sydney show; the Chinese-influenced Dralion (2000), in its standard, non-Superbit release; the relatively short IMAX film Journey of Man (2002); Varekai (2002), from Toronto; La Nouba (2003), from Walt Disney World; and Midnight Sun, strikingly staged outdoors at the 2004 Montreal International Jazz Festival.

That's a lot of aerial feats, tricks, and tumbling, but the set is not designed to absorb in one sitting. Rather, viewers can sample both the simpler early shows and the stunning later performances that, with their 5.1 sound and widescreen pictures, are perfectly suited to home theaters. Compiling 12 previously released DVDs in space-saving Thinpaks at an economical price, the Anniversary Collection is nearly all the Cirque du Soleil you could ever want, but completists should note that the set does not include the feature film Allegria: An Enchanting Fable, the bonus disc of Varekai, the reality-TV show Fires Within, and the 13-part variety series Solstrom. --David Horiuchi

I highly recomend to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection-- best family gift ever........2007-01-05

I purchased this collection for Christmas for my husband. The entire family enjoys it. It is awesome to see where they started and where they are now. When we popped in the first DVD we thought we would be bored by the original "traditional" circus acts they started out with, BUT we were laughing and loving every second of it. To see how they grew is just a couple years the next and every DVD only get better and better.

I will be purchasing these sets for several family members over the years I am sure. It is an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Love This Show!!.......2006-12-27

We saw Cirque Du Soleil at Disney this year during Thanksgiving. We LOVED it. I had no idea they had this anniversary collection until I searched for the show on here on DVD. I was so thrilled! My husband immediatly opened it and watched the La Noubia (sp?) again and loved it as much on DVD as he did live. I would recommend this set to anyone who appreciates this type of show!! A devastatingly skillful and emotionally compelling documentary, The Times of Harvey Milk charts the political rise and brutal slaying of the first openly gay city official in the United State, Harvey Milk. Ironically, the same election that brought Milk to the board of city supervisors of San Francisco also elected the man who killed him, a former police officer and fireman named Dan White. After White shot both Mayor George Moscone and Milk, his defense lawyers convinced the jury that White's judgment was impaired by depression and junk food, resulting in a conviction for manslaughter instead of murder--a verdict that prompted riots. With care and conviction, The Times of Harvey Milk captures not only Milk himself, but also the political and social landscape in which these events took place. The interviews--with friends, politicians, and journalists--are articulate and heartfelt, expressing the impact that Milk had upon this historical moment. --Bret Fetzer

"THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK"

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

One of the finest gay documentaries to come along in the last few years is undoubtedly "The Times of Harvey Milk". Through interviews with his friends, acquaintances and people from the world of politics, the film brings Milk to life and shows him to be the inspiration that he was when he was alive. The movie pens with a very moving shot of Diane Feinstein announcing that "Mayor Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk have been shot and killed. From here we re taken on a tour of Milk's life and find out who the man was. As we look at the life of Milk very strong emotions come into play and the gay perspective of an openly gay elected official shot down in his prime looms before us. There is no gay propaganda here and both sides of the coin are looked at with fairness.
It seems as if the goal of the film is turn Milk into a martyr, and in a sense he was. He knew he would be assassinated. Even though, when the announcement comes that he has been shot down, there s a shock to be felt, especially when you see the reporters who upon hearing the announcement cry out in disbelief. What is even more shocking is that Dan White, who shot Milk, was found guilty any of voluntary manslaughter and eventually set free after only five and a half years in jail.
This is a stunning film and it is quite remarkable the way the story of Milk's life s pieced together and retold. The film covers a piece of America that few know about and everyone should. The movie is for all people, not just gays. It is a film about politics or San Francisco. It is about a man who was murdered at the prime of his life who happened to be a gay San Franciscan politician. The move takes you in and shows you how Milk affected lives including the life of the man who assassinated him. Just as Harvey Milk's life is impotent to us, the aftermath of his death is jest as important as seen in this amazing film. As an openly gay politician, Milk filled an important place in history. Milk was an intense person as to how he dealt with human rights. How he fit into society is amazing.
The director, Robert Epstein, has made a movie he can be proud of and the fact that it won an Oscar is validation of that. This straightforward portrait of Harvey Milk is fascinating and inspirational. It shows the tenaciousness of a man who was articulate, charming and intelligent. With gay rights being the biggest issue facing him, he fought equally of other disenfranchised groups and recognized their need to come together to fight for the rights of all. He was a hero of the entire movement for human rights and the film shows how much has changed since the film was made in 1984. Harvey Milk is a part of the history that we as members of the GLBT community have to be proud of and as long as we have this film to remind us, we know that everything is possible.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Documentary.......2006-12-09

After watching this documentary on Harvey Milk, all I could think to myself was how this story escapes high school history books. Harvey Milk is the gay community's MLK, Jr. - everyone should know about his plight for justice.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. You laugh, you cry, and you try your best to live your life with hope........2006-11-16

I just finished watching The Times of Harvey Milk and I struggle to find the right words to express how amazing this documentary is.

Focusing on Harvey Milk in the context of San Francisco and California in the 1970's, this film is as much about the gay community as it is about Milk himself.

Yet it captures Milk's passion without portraying him as a saint. He has temper tantrums, he lacks patience at times, but he calls on ALL of us, gay or straight, as members of the human condition, to make our world a better place. He calls us to see the links between the oppression of gays, asians, blacks, women, the poor, etc and challenges us to rise up in our own communities and fight for every one of these causes because it is the right thing to do.

The film is exquisitely made, using photographs, news reports, radio broadcasts, and interviews with Milk's friends and political cohorts. It reaches down into you and tears at your heart, it enrages you when White doesn't really get the full brunt of the law, and it inspires you with that most difficult of things... hope.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting documentary.......2006-08-14

I didn't know a lot about the murder of San Francisco Board of Supervisor Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. At that time I was too busy raising my sons and wasn't politically minded at that time of my life. I wanted to learn more about this incident so I saw this movie.

Dan Brown (another supervisor) resigned from his position. Family, friends and supporters said he shouldn't have done that and he asked for his job back. When he heard he probably wouldn't be reinstated he killed them. He had a gun and bullets in his pockets. Yet a jury let him get away with pretty much a slap on the hand. He served only five years incarcerated. His defense was he was under pressure and eating too much junk food. The Twinkie Defense. As people said in the film, if he only assassinated Mayor George Moscone instead of also killing Harvey Milk (who was gay), he would have done hard time.

One of the faults I suppose of the jury system is that since it is a jury of your peers is that sometimes they will let you get away with a "hate crime". I feel that's is what happened in the OJ trail. I wish this could be fixed somehow.

5 out of 5 stars Essential historical documentary.......2006-06-17

Robert Epstein and Richard Schmiechen have crafted an eloquent and touching documentary that brings to life a historically important political figure in our nation's history: Harvey Milk, the first openly gay public elected official in San Francisco. Milk, together with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, were assassinated in November 1978.

The film does not concentrate on a biographical portrait of Milk, but instead focuses on the eleven months he served as San Francisco supervisor. It brings life to history, albeit recent history, a quality that is lacking in so many historical documentaries. What makes this possible, in many ways, is the ample news footage that was available to trace the events that comprised those eleven months, and the personal commentary provided by witnesses and participants of the events documented. The additional footage and audio commentary that comprises this 2-DVD set sheds more light on the Harvey Milk legacy. Milk was a politician by nature, much in the same way as John Kennedy was, but without the money. It shows how much a charasmatic figure can accomplish when the mission seems clear. Milk's humor, candor, and intelligence shines through.

I first saw this film in the late 1980s on public television, and saw it a few times since. Watching it today, what shocked me the most is that Dan White, who served a little more than five years for the slayings, received no psychiatric treatment while incarcerated. White's defense attorney stated quite clearly in news footage that White was a suicide risk the day the verdict was announced. White killed himself less than two years after his release. I am clearly no apologist for Dan White, but he was failed by the very system that awarded him his freedom a scant five years after killing two men.

Milk was elected to public office in the few years after the notion of the "personal is political" became popular. Milk exemplified and capitalized on this notion brilliantly. What Milk's legacy shows me, today, is that personal authenticity is the most essential quality needed in our public officials. Integrity and intelligence springs from authenticity, as does clarity of purpose. And a sense of wit and humor is the second most essential quality. Milk possessed both.

P.S.: I thought of this after I originally posted my review. Milk was assassinated a few short years before the AIDS epidemic emerged as a public health threat within, and outside of, the gay community. Had Milk been on the scene at the time, I have no doubt he would have used his office and political power to the greatest extent possible to affect legislation and government accountibility in their response to the epidemic. His death really altered the course of history.

4 out of 5 stars A fine adaptation, but not good enough to stand on its own. . ........2007-07-04

Like most reviewers, I read Orwell's novel long before I watched this film, and I think this is the crucial point. This is a film that clearly stands on the shoulders of the book, a film that lends visual authority and power, really, to many of the themes (and overall mood) developed in the book. If you watch this movie without first making any headway against the novel, I am afraid you will walk away with the impression that you have just watched a rather peculiar, (but on the whole) rather forgettable film about a time-worn man searching for a way out of an absolutely pulverizing totalitarian state. But if you watch this movie with the cheater's advantage of knowing what to look for, then the film, in my opinion, rates much better, because then you will be able to use it to sharpen and refine your appreciation of certain Orwellian themes.

What stands out about this film? To start, I was mesmerized by the film's masterful rendering of the tone and appearance of a totalitarian state. The air is cold and caustic, the buildings gray, cracked, and obliterated, the entire scene a rubble, like a society that awakens one day to nuclear fall-out. The only signs of human life in this smashed landscape are the ever-present telescreens that dispense state news alerts or triumphant reports of production goals for raw materials being met. Main character Winston Smith reflects the wider, societal degradation and decay in his deeply-lined face and burned out gaze, a twiggish man who coughs and hacks his way through daily, state-mandated calisthenics. In short, the visual aspect of the film was, to me, the obvious highlight.

Second, I think that, thematically, the film is rich and provoking. As with any film adaptation of a classic novel, the film has to condense its menu of ideas and its analysis of those ideas, and it is for this reason that people often mistakenly criticize a film for falling short of the book's grandeur. But the filmmakers here raise a bundle of interesting questions, and certainly they raise the questions that deserved to be raised. The film asks us to ponder 'By what means and measures does the state maintain its crushing grip on power?' 'How are people and society warped, physically and psychologically, when denied the power to choose?' 'How is the effort to preserve one's language and history relevant to the effort to sustain freedom and opportunity?' 'Are there any fissures in the edifice of the state, or any escape routes that provide hope for a different future?' 'Could this happen anywhere today?' Etc.

In the end, the film provides suitable depth for most of these themes but falters with others. Terrifyingly, the film suggests no route of escape for Winston Smith, nor anyone else. The school-age children are indoctrinated with the lies and false logic of the state, and their youthful, bouyant loyalty surpasses even that of their parents, some of whom seem to sense somewhere in the farthest recesses of their minds that they've been made to worship a false idol, though they will never admit it. And for those like Winston Smith, who suspect just this, the state employs ruthless techniques of coercion and re-conditioning.

One final note. I've read many reviews of the novel and of the film, and for some reason, many people feel compelled to discern striking similarities between what Orwell wrote and what the world looks like today. "Look at what's happening in the US right now," they'll say, or "This stuff is already happening" etc. Nonsense. Orwell's warnings demand our attention, sure, but I notice today that in the good old USA, I got up at a time of my choosing, ate what I wanted for breakfast, decided not to run in a local 5k race, booted up my computer instead, checked a baseball box score, then typed a review of a film about autocratic rule. Thanks, Big Brother!

2 out of 5 stars I was disappointed ..........2007-06-02

I am a sci-fi nut and have an interest in dystopias ... but I must say I was disappointed with this movie. I really can dissect it enough but suffice it to say that I think it would be a bit hard to follow if you hadn't read the novel already. It is also a bit abstract at times. I am glad I saw it to satisfy my curiosity but I think I will put it up for sale. I thought THX-1138 was a better movie as well as the TV redition of Brave New World.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING MOVIE.......2007-05-12

This is an amazing movie, and the thing that is really unfortunate is that these sellers are gouging the prices and keeping this movie's important message from the rest of the world. Despite this movie being out of print, it is ENTIRELY available through the United Kingdom AMAZON and you can purchase it regardless of where you are. I just bought mine for 7 dollars and with shipping it totalled 11 DOLLARS and 54 CENTS!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY BUYING FROM THESE SELLERS! They are turning a profit on George Orwells work and keeping 1984's crucial message from the average viewer. Like I said before, they should be ASHAMED of themselves. Great, great movie and everyone needs to see. Once having the opportunity to watch, I highly recommend looking into todays politics and seeing how it relates to much of what is going on today (ie patriot act and the almost patriot act II) Very eerie. Nonetheless, everyone must also check out 1984LIVE dot com. It is mildly humerous yet at the same time daunting. REMEMBER, SHOP UK AMAZON and dont get sucked into buying from these money-hungry sellers in the United States.

5 out of 5 stars The best adaption to the book I've ever seen- Patriot Act its a posibility.......2007-05-11

Indeeed, the movie is best viewed if you prior read the book . I remember I was every exceited when it showed up because I was just finished reading the book and the concepts of "thought police", Big Brother, totaliatarian state, etc were developing in my mind.. I read in the paper that Orwell's window was very much into the production seeing that the true spirit of the book was held at all times... and the movie does that at perfection level.

In 1948 Orwell wrote the book to exptrapolate a world where fascism, comunism and other totalitarian forces gradually swept the world to create this dystopia... your thoughts are your own worst enemies.. they must be controlled by the message of the big-brothers and their sect of leaders in a hierarchical scale where beong a common citizen is the worst you can be .. uhmm any similarities with present state is purely coincidential

I can understand why this movie is not available now; again call me a "conspiracy paranoid", but now is not the best time to question status-quo, now that hey are so focused on finding the enemy of terrorism within and abroad... I thought I never see the day that the USA would give up their freedom over to a group of neo-fascist, christian puritans to convert it gradually in a totalitarian state.. we go out agaist the taliban just as we are converting to a new talibanism... no civil rights if any suspision arises, I wait 4 hours in line trying to get in the US to spend my vacations there, to be considered; just by being a foreigner, as a terrorist threat.. while at the same time in my country the whole systems marches to a Castro like state.. Is there a place in the world for free thought now?? Is anyone out there??? helloooo... sure hope Australia is still a land of free thought.... terrorist indeed won over, they have taken away by our consent our right to freedom

I am amazed at the price and the fact that is not available here in Amazon, or is this part of the conspiracy as well!!

Cult followers should delight in what has to be one of the more comprehensive DVD packages assembled to date. The disc's 19 songs (plus two bonus videos), including some live performances, are spread out over some 90 minutes and feature every single released by the British band between 1984 and '95, when singer (and fashion plate) Ian Astbury, guitarist Billy Duffy, and their various bandmates were in their heyday. Several are introduced by Astbury and Duffy, who supply amusing, occasionally self-deprecating reminiscences, and all can be individually selected from an elaborate, graphically rich menu. The bonus discography is wondrous to behold: complete details and notes are supplied for every Cult album over the course of a remarkable 74 pages. Rather less interesting are three separate interviews (from '86, '91, and '94) with the two leaders--but hey, it's all about the music, man, and Pure Cult has plenty of that. --Sam Graham

    4 out of 5 stars Yes!!!.......2007-01-31

Fans of The Cult can rejoice about this DVD which features all the music videos from their "Love" album all the way through to their self-titled album. The Cult has only put out two DVD's (the other being a live DVD from the tour of their "Beyond Good & Evil" album) and, despite the fact the DVD is sans Chapter Selections, this is the superior one. As I said, all the videos are here (including rare live performances) and all are good (although some I hit the skip button on). There are also some interviews and some of the videos are introduced by Ian Astbury & Billy Duffy's comments. This DVD portrays the two as very laid back rock stars who are brilliant songwriters and terrific performers. Having seen Ian Astbury live (with Riders on the Storm) I know how good this guy is both in performing and singing and few singers can do what Astbury does. The guy has a voice that sounds like two men in one body. Duffy is a brilliant guitarist and even with the lineup of the band changing significantly over the years, the band never ceases to amaze me.
Any fan of The Cult needs to see this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD will make you a hardcore fan if you're not already!.......2006-07-03

This is a superb anthology of a badly underrated band. From their early 80's goth-rock leanings to their 90's guitar attacks and distorted crunch, there isn't a loser in this set.

"Fire Woman" was always my favorite video, but this DVD showed me that there was much more to this band.

The REAL treat has to be the live rendition of "Sun King" from 1992. The band is indeed on fire. Page/Plant fans, notice who's behind the drum kit. This is an amazing performance.

On the fence regarding The Cult? Buy this DVD. NOW. You'll be a believer in no time.

Awesome!!!Sure hope to see more of them in the future! Rock on, Tribe!

4 out of 5 stars THE CULT BEGINNING TO NOW.......2003-06-21

First off - I want to say how awesome it is that Ian Astbury is taking over the vacated Morrison billet with The Doors. I'm not the first fan to compare The Cult with The Doors - the similarities are obvious through the poetry, the imagery, and on some levels, the sound.
As with the other reviews, I also enjoyed watching the band grow and change styles through the years.
The DVD, however, isn't the greatest. I own a good collection of music DVD's and they all seem to suffer some complaint. The main grief I have over this one is the lack of chapter search for a song. So, for instance, you only want to watch Fire Women, to do that you have to chapter forward 17 times...bummer.

    Description

They're all part of a typical day for the students of Lincoln High. Into this academic abyss arrives Andy Norris (Slaughterhouse Five's Perry King), an idealistic and naïve music teacher who has moved into the community with his pregnant wife Diane. Appalled by the crime-infested school, Norris soon crosses sabers with its teenage kingpin, the shrewd and sadistic Peter Stegman (The White Shadow's Timothy Van Patten). With Norris setting his sights on reforming Stegman, and the young miscreant declaring war on his teacher, the duo sets a fateful showdown into motion on the night of an important school orchestra performance. Directed and co-written by Mark L. Lester (Commando, Firestarter), CLASS OF 1984 is one of the seminal cult movies of the early 1980s. While its vision of a decaying, violence-plagued inner city school seemed over-the-top in 1982, it sadly prophesized the future of American education. Lester's film - which caused a stir at Cannes and reputedly offended one of its own screenwriters - is also notable for its cast, which includes Van Patten, Roddy McDowall and a very young Michael J. Fox. Alice Cooper performs the theme song, "I Am The Future". No longer are the students of Lincoln High the future, for the future has arrived!

5 out of 5 stars High School Horror.......2006-07-01

This movie is great. I first saw this movie back in the 80s on t.v. and I was glued to the screen. All the scenes in the movie have stayed with me all these years and it was fun to see them again this year (2006). Watching this movie when I was about nine or ten scared me so much at the time, that I wasn't to thrilled about the thought of eventually having to go to highschool. Even with all the hardcore scenes either edited or completley eliminated from t.v. it still was shocking. I assumed that being an adult I wouldn't view it the same, and yet this movie still maintains an original shock to it's scenes like no other movie that I've seen, even though it is a bit Clockwork Orangeish-which the director admitted to borrowing from. Very well directed, fast paced, and no borring character development. The story gets right to the point leaving the viewer feeling like a fly on the wall.

5 out of 5 stars How Do You Like What You See?.......2006-04-17

Class Of 1984 has always been marketed as as a B exploitation film. Hell, I remember when I was a kid finding it in the "horror" section of the local video store! Though the film does have it's exploitation elements for sure, Class Of 1984 is a damn good movie. It could have been promoted as a more serious film(it actually was intended to be a more serious drama) and win over more critics, but like they mention in the documentary featurette, the scenes of violence and punk rockers and such were enough to prejudice some people into thinking the movie was something less than what it actually was. I never saw much of Perry King's work before or after this, but he's a very good choice as a kind of wimpy music teacher who thinks that through the power of knowledge, he can help the troubled teen, Timothy Van Patten. In fact, King's music class is probably the best behaved of the entire school with Van Patten as the only real rotten apple in the bunch...when he attends. Pretty boy Van Patten is kind of a teenage Godfather who runs drugs and hookers out of a punk rock club. His gang consists of three annoying thugs and one very annoying chick. When King pisses Van Patten off, the war begins. It starts off pretty simple with vandalism and practical jokes, but ends up being quite deadly. King goes through the movie in the role of dogooder throughout all of Van Patten's antics. I think most guys would have broken down long before King's character does, but when King does break down it's well worth the wait. If you let yourself get into the story, this movie will make your blood boil as you feel the frustration King feels. Whenever he retaliates, he's the one who gets in trouble, though you know he's really not doing anything wrong. It's like in real school where a guy would hit you with a spitball and no one would ever see him, but you'd be the one caught when you fired a spitball back. Plus the frustration mounts coz every rotten act Van Patten commits is brushed off coz "no one saw him do it" and the fact that he's a juvenile. The film builds to a fantastic final confrontation that gets downright brutal. Lots of great performances all around. Van Patten should have gone on to be a bigger star, but it never happened. He's does a great job as the evil, sly psychopath. Of course special praise must be given to Roddy McDowell. He's fantastic in this. They couldn't have picked a better guy for the job. Many thanks go out to Anchor Bay for putting this great film out on dvd. There's a good halfhour documentary on the disc that speaks mainly to director Lester, as well as two of the actors. Recommended very highly. Yesiree, Bob.

5 out of 5 stars Love this cult exploitation masterpiece but where is the old music?.......2006-04-16

Finally - one of my favorite movies has appeared on DVD. The version I had always known was the Australian VHS edition which features an entirely different score in the final reel when Perry King begins his killing spree.

The Anchor Bay and Australian DVDs of this movie both contain the original Lalo Schifrin score in the final reel, but the original Aussie VHS edition (and I presume theatrical edition) had different music - something that sounded like it could have been composed by John Carpenter in that era. Ticking, high-end percussion with a synth pulse beat accompanied by a rising and falling synth pad really gave the movie a momentum which is missing from Schifrin's score. It kicks in after Stegman's girlfriend utters the line "C'mon get it, teacher, teacher."
It's real "payback time" music that gets the pulse racing.

Not detracting anything from Schifrin, who is in fine form on this picture, but the music I remember from the past gave the final reel a totally different energy and dynamic. It really suited Perry King's violent rage as he viciously destroys the punks (by saw, by fire, bye bye). I wonder if this was something added to the "international" version of the movie that Lester discusses in his commentary. Not sure how many people have noticed this but I'm sure Australia was not the only territory in which this music alteration was made. Seems likely the original UK release would have been similar.

I'm glad the DVD contains the entire Schifrin score but it would have been great to have the option of the alternate audio added to a seperate track. I'd also love to know why the decision to change the music was made in the first place.

Great movie with terrific performances from the entire cast. It's really satisfying to watch the pain get dished out to these little pricks. They've totally earned their punishments and director Mark L.Lester really lets them have it. (A trait evident in his subsequent "Firestarter" and "Commando" in which hundreds of people are laid to waste in spectacular ways with carefree abandon.) Commando must have one of the greatest body counts of any 80s action movie.

Stegman - Tim Van Patten is now a director of "The Sopranos". Also worth checking is out Lester's insane out-of-control sequel "Class of 1999". Cyborg teachers unleash the pain on the youth population of Seattle with explosive results.

Don't miss Class of 1984 - finally in widescreen.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining! I Laughed, I Cried!.......2006-04-03

It is entertaining if you like over the top violence and laughable serious situations. It was truly a fun film to watch. Definately a Cult Classic that I am not sorry for purchasing. Think Bad Boys + The Warriors + Roddy McDowell acting abilities and there you have it.

    4 out of 5 stars A strange concoction.......2007-05-23

First off, there are things about this film I really love. The play between Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan is great, (a pity it wasn't utilized a bit further but that's the price you pay for action at every turn) as are the scenes with Kate Capshaw's Willie Scott. She provides Indy with the perfect antithesis to his stoic, cool behaviour. The spike chamber is a brilliant setpiece and something that everyone will remember once having watched it.

It's in the second half that things go a bit wrong. When Lucas described Temple Of Doom as the dark sequel to Raiders (a la Empire Strikes Back) it confused me slightly. The underlying storyline is indeed darker, as it depicts Kali worshipping, human sacrifice and children being on the receiving end of some nasty violence. However, the overriding tone of the film is more frivolous than any other Indy flick. This comes from small, incidental snippets of comedy that appear in inappropriate places and points where it just turns outright silly. Examples of which would be the gross-out comedy from the palace meal; Shortround beating up fully-grown men, etc. All this stuff would be great in a film aimed solely at kids but then this isn't. It seems that Lucas and Spielberg were trying to alleviate the darker passages of the film but instead went too far in the other direction at some points. This leaves you with a strange concoction that doesn't actually know what it wants to be. It's a bit too silly for adults and too scary for children. It is a heck of alot of fun when it does work, however.

I would argue that Raiders is in fact the darkest in the series. Whilst it has that overriding sense of fun and a good portion of humour, the violence is played much straighter and the ominous, mysterious danger of the ark permeates the film (helped no end by Williams' great score).

4 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones's entry into comedy.......2006-06-14

Some movies in this world are so bad they're actually good. "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" is definitely an example.

This movie is certainly no match for its predecessor, the very serious "Raiders of the Lost Arc", but it is so hilarious it deserves 4 stars.

Will Indiana Jones stop the bad guys?

Will Kate Capshaw stop complaining for 5 minutes?

4 out of 5 stars Too spooky for my taste.......2006-05-06

The "now standard Indiana" formula is there and there are a lot of fun parts to this movie. However the bad guys are too bad and the situation is too spooky. Be sure to watch "Riders of the Lost Ark" first even thought this takes place chronologically earlier.

Once again James Bond has nothing on Dr. Jones (Harrison Ford) as he negotiates for a treasure and is double crossed at every turn, barely escaping with his life, also the acquisition of a steriotipical blond singer Wilhelmina Scott (Kate Capshaw), and his new sidekick Short Round (Jonathan Ke Quan).

In his hasty retreat he does not realize that there are greater forces at work insuring that he fulfill his destiny to recover a sacred object and all the children of a beleaguered village.

Is he up to the challenge?
In this case does being blond help or hinder?
Will Short Shot prove that size does not matter?
    Take heart!

Be prepared for a dark passage "a little too dark for my taste".

4 out of 5 stars Rod knows how to sell records.......2007-06-21

If you wanted to sell records in the 80s and early 90s (and we all know Rod loves selling records as much as he loves his blondes), you had to make good, or at least expensive videos. Rod Stewart did just that. The best of this bunch include "Every Beat of My Heart," "Broken Arrow" and the animated "Motown Song." Rod fans will also love the ridiculous "Some Guys Have All The Luck" which feautres Rod doing his helpless dancing routine. He's definitely a singer not a dancer but still amusing to watch. Also look for Rod with slicked back hair as he drives off with the girl at the end of "Infatuation." The missing videos from this period include "Crazy About Her" from 1989 and "Love Touch" from 1986.

    4 out of 5 stars Good!.......2006-11-10

This was a good trip down memory lane. As with all DVD's, I prefer PCM Audio tracks with uncompressed audio. Some of the videos show their age (esp. in the sound quality and not to mention hair style) but were very fun to see. Would like to see more of Rod's music videos on a single DVD. There are so many videos Rod has created that aren't here. A set with all his hits would be greatly appreciated!

All the titles on this Music DVD are "Most Excellent"...'Every Beat Of My Heart' depicts the Jewish Hollocaust...'Forever Young' is the way I feel when I listen to it Time-&-Time again...this song never gets old! 'Rhythm Of My Heart' depicts the emotional aspects of going off to War...which is where I am right now (09/Aug/2006) in IRAQ. In one more week I'll be entering my 3rd year working here. Overall...the entire DVD Video is extremely "Most Excellent"! HOO-AH! As we would say in the War Zone here in Baghdad, IRAQ ! ! ! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Every Beat Of The Heart.......2003-09-27

For so many acts thay have came out of Britain, it has always been a come and go method. Sometimes, we forget about them, and we choose other artists to replace them as new favorites. That case came so many times within Rod Stewart, but he has always found ways to bounce back to the top of the charts. Still, it is his amazing soulful voice that just keeps us guessing to his status.

Storyteller, is a collection of Rod Stewart music videos from 1984-1991. The collection goes from his entry to the MTV generation with his videos from Camouflage, all the way to Vagabond Heart. The songs don't range greatfully, but it does show why Rod Stewart has remained as a constant in this industry geared toward youth. The music videos range greatly with ballads like Every Beat Of My Heart and Downtown Train, to his soulful party anthems like The Motown Song and Infatuation. The video collection was made based on the triumph of Rod Stewart's 1989 boxed set, Storyteller. Although you don't hear the singles from Vagabond Heart on the boxed set, they are right here.

Still, it is just a shame that we don't give Rod Stewart all that credit anymore. Still, he alwasy knows what makes a great vibe in a song, and the style as well. He hasn't changed with his Earthy voice since he started his career with The Faces. I just know there is a lot more soul to come.
