They get drunk on sour milk. They have two hearts and bald, spotted heads. They're highly intelligent, but if you drop them in seawater they'll melt into a puddle of goop. They're "Newcomers," and they arrived as refugees in a massive alien slave-ship, quarantined for three years and then reluctantly accepted as citizens of Earth. To some humans--including seasoned Los Angeles cop Matt Sykes (James Caan)--the Newcomers are unwelcome "slags." Sykes's own virulent "speciesism" intensifies when Newcomer thugs kill his partner, but he sees logic in teaming up with Sam Francisco (Mandy Patinkin), the first Newcomer detective in the LAPD. Francisco's Newcomer knowledge is vital to their investigation of an alien drug ring, and a friendship grows from life-or-death circumstances.

A routine cop thriller with a comedic sci-fi twist, Alien Nation> has two things working in its favor: Caan and Patinkin form a memorable duo, and the basic premise--as conceived by Rockne S. O'Bannon (who later developed the film as a TV series)--intelligently accounts for the sociological impact of an alien population. The subtle point is made that humans are extraordinary beings who squander their potential, and the evil of drugs--as dealt by a social-climbing Newcomer played by Terence Stamp--leads to a crisis that threatens to generate global intolerance. These points are well presented in a context of overly familiar plotting and standard-issue sarcasm. It's entertaining for a brisk 90 minutes, but in its attempt to be widely appealing, Alien Nation glosses over issues that might have made it more uniquely provocative. --Jeff Shannon

If you're still eating that fast-food burger after watching Super Size Me, you might not feel too hungry after watching Fast Food Nation, a fictionalized feature based on Eric Schlosser's bestselling nonfiction expose. Director Richard Linklater, who cowrote the screenplay with Schlosser, guides a topnotch ensemble cast through a peek behind the veil of how that Big Mac is born. Much of the film focuses on the illegal immigrants who work in the loosely regulated meat-packing industry, and actors including the luminous Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace), who plays a desperate but outraged laborer. Greg Kinnear also delivers a spot-on performance as a fast-food chain marketing manager, trying frantically to discover the source of stomach-turning contamination in the company's meat. Stories are woven in unexpected ways, and cameos by the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Patricia Arquette, and especially Bruce Willis keep the narrative fresh. The film has a point of view, but thanks to Linklater's deft touch, is never didactic. As Willis's character slyly says, "Most people don't like to be told what's best for them." Agreed, yet Fast Food Nation likely will help the viewer be more conscious of what's on the end of that fork. --A.T. Hurley

Stills from Fast Food Nation

Description

Inspired by the incendiary New York Times bestseller that exposed the hidden facts behind America's fast food industry, Fast Food Nation combines an all-star ensemble cast lead by Greg Kinnear, Wilmer Valderrama and Avril Lavigne with riveting, interlocked human stories to serve up "a firecracker of a movie that jumps off the screen" (Rolling Stone). When a marketing executive (Kinnear) for the Mickey's burger chain is told there's a nasty secret ingredient in his latest culinary creation?"The Big One"? he heads for the ranches and slaughterhouses of Colorado to investigate...but discovers the truth a bit difficult to swallow.

1 out of 5 stars Self-righteous garbage.......2007-07-03

I hate to give this sanctimonious diatribe about the evils of capitalism one star, because it doesn't deserve any. Seriously, this is quite possibly the worst waste of time ever, I can see myself on my deathbed lamenting the time I wasted watching this worthless claptrap.

Schlosser's book was both informative and enlightening, but the movie, chocked full as it was with stereotypes and misguided, opinionated drivel, was neither. From the hapless, forlorn illegal immigrants and their abusive coyotes and supervisors to the stupid, idealistic kids to the greedy, uncaring company executives, the cast of characters seem to have been taken straight out of a stereotype catalog. And the constant refrain throughout the movie had very little to do with the fast food industry, except to repeatedly point out that "there is s#!t in the meat". More, it was a general stab at the capitalist system and the evils of for profit ventures. I wonder if Schlosser felt guilty about taking the money he was paid for having his book and his reputation slaughtered like the cattle in the closing scene. Which, BTW, was the only part of the whole movie that was not completely disingenuous, as the meat industry is pretty disgusting when you think about it. Not that I am a vegan or anything, mind you.

I can only assume, that if capitalism and profit are so horrible, that the producers of this, to use the term loosly, FILM, donated their take to worthy animal and human rights organizations. Otherwise they are not only lousy filmmakers, but hypocrites to boot. Maybe they would be happier in Cuba or North Korea or someplace like that.

On the bright side, no one can ever accuse Plan 9 from Outer Space or Robot Monster of being the worst movie ever. The bar has just been set to a new low.

5 out of 5 stars A must-see!.......2007-06-17

Those who see Fast Food Nation as simply a movie about hamburger or even the fast food industry miss the point. Fast Food nation uses the fast food industry as a metaphor for the degradation of EVERYTHING from the land to the lives of ranchers to the the people who work within the death machine which is modern corporate culture. It is broad in its scope, but it must be. The banding together of young people to fight the ills they saw through direct action gives hope for the future.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant mutli-layered exploration of human beings linked by the fast food business.......2007-06-16

"Fast Food Nation" is a superb reworking of Eric Schlosser's 2001 book by Schlosser and director Richard Linklater.

Set mostly in and around the town of Cody on the Mexican-American border, "Fast Food Nation" follows three story threads all linked by the fast food business.

Mickey's burger chain has a problem - fecal matter in its burger patties -so it sends out its new marketing manager Don Henderson (Greg Kinnear) to find out what is going on at the meat packing plant that supplies all their patties.

Uni-Globe Meat Packers employes many illegal Mexican immigrants. The immigrants are exploited and brutalised by a the company - treated little better than the animals processed at the plant. An evil supervisor at the factory Mike (Bobby Cannavale) drives around in a red pickup, treats the Mexicans with contempt, and coerces women staff members into sex - he is like the devil himself and the factory can be seen as a kind of hell for the animals and workers.

Amber (Ashley Johnson) works on the counter at the Mickey's restaurant in Cody oblivious to the evils of the nearby meat-packing plant. Through some college friends and her uncle she is slowly awakened to the plight of the workers and animals, and prompted to take action.

"Fast Food Nation" features a number of brilliant cameos by Kris Kristofferson (rancher), Bruce Willis (tough company negotiator) and Ethan Hawke (Amber's uncle) but the entire cast is excellent. It also features a great score from "The Friends of Dean Martinez".

"Fast Food Nation" succeeds because - save for the evil supervisor Mike - it doesn't paint the good and bad guys in black and white. It doesn't offer easy answers either.

A brilliant, multi-layered film from creators Linklater and Schlosser.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-06-13

This was by far one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Don't waste your time or money! I truly enjoyed the book, but the movie really had nothing to do with the book. The topic of "poopy" burgers was hardly addressed as the whole movie revolved around illegal immigrants. It was full of propaganda and rather un-American.

3 out of 5 stars urrrppp!.......2007-06-05

Warning: watching the last three minutes of this film can lead to vegetarianism. Based upon Eric Schlosser's devastating book about the fast food industry by the same title (2001), this fictional film never quite finds its focus. The ostensibly main character disappears half way through, never to reappear. It's not clear which of the many sub-plots is the main narrative. But I still recommend the movie. When corporate hack Don discovers that there are more than chemical additives to Mickeys "Big One" burger, namely fecal matter, he travels to the Uniglobe Meat Packing Company to find out what's wrong. Lots, it turns out. You'll find yourself back in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle (1906), what with illegal immigrant labor on the cheap, animal cruelty, horrible sanitation, hazardous work conditions, employee abuse, pitiless corporate greed, and more, all to feed our fast food habits. You'll never think about a Big Mac in the same way, nor should you, thanks to this mediocre movie that nevertheless provides some serious social commentary.

4 out of 5 stars Fun-tastic!.......2007-06-14

James Caan and Mandy Patinkin are fabulous in this combination sci-fi cop/buddy film. The "alien" aspects of the story line are of course metaphores for what we all live with today, which makes it an interesting social commentary.

This is one of my favorite don't-have-to-think-too-hard movies that's also the premise for one of my all time favorite television shows. There need to be more films like this.

4 out of 5 stars Alien Nation (original movie).......2007-03-18

Alien Nation is classic science fiction now. The story is interesting; dialogue fair (though better than anything in Star Wars); and the acting, while not Oscar-worthy, is solid.

4 out of 5 stars the movie that started the series.......2007-03-08

i thought this was a great concept. and, i hadn't seen Mandy Patinkin in a movie since "the princess bride". the movie doesn't have enough time to really go into detail about the newcomers like the series did but you get enough info to know that they are very different from us. it's more of an action movie than a sci-fi movie because it takes place on earth. these guy's crash landed on our planet and don't have a way to get back home so they try and adapt to our way of life. if you like action with a little bit of comedy and you don't really have to think too much about whats going on, then you'll like this one. it's a fun movie!

5 out of 5 stars Alien Nation sent promptly in great condition.......2006-09-06

5 out of 5 stars re; Sour milk with some liver spots........2006-08-27

Amusing & yeah, dated for sure. It's still good fun though. I'm surprised the Sci Fi channel hasn't tried to rejuvinate this franchise. Is it even a franchise anymore?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Alien Nation.......2007-06-27

Besides being a good scifi show, Alien Nation covered many issues- racism, slavery, friendship, and stereotypes regarding male/female roles.
Watching Matt grow in terms of tolerence, love, friendship and the ability to express these feelings was well acted. Best scene- Matt helping his male partner give birth!

4 out of 5 stars Great series, lousy DVD set.......2007-06-14

This is one of those shows that should be required viewing for everyone. It's funny, touching, and makes the viewer think hard about their own place in society. I was so happy to see it again after years of occasional reruns on the scifi channel that I snatched it up and watched the whole thing in a maration viewing. It's still one of my favorite programs.

Fox could have done a much better job on the DVDs themselves, especially for a series that has such a strong following. I would have loved some real extras, like a retrospective or more commentaries from Kenneth Johnson. The least they could have done is saved it from the fate of those rotten double-sided discs. This show deserves so much better, but then again, it got cancelled when it was one of the best shows on the 89-90 schedule.

Here's to hoping the movies make it out one of these days.

4 out of 5 stars Great (though slightly dated) SciFi.......2007-05-13

Alien Nation was originally a movie released in 1988 starring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin. It followed the adventures of a human police detective (Caan) investigating the murder of his partner by Newcomers - members of an alien race that crash-landed on Earth years earlier and are now citizens of Los Angeles/USA. In order to catch the killers, the human detective partnered up with L.A.'s first Newcomer police detective (Mandy Patinkin).

The television series, released in 1989, recast the various roles (Gary Graham took over as the human detective with Eric Pierpoint as his Newcomer partner), but kept the movie plotlines intact - even including scenes from the movie in the pilot episode. The result was 22 episodes of interesting (and, at the time,) near-future science fiction that dealt with the pertinent social issues and cultural changes of the time.

Years later, the episodes and the issues that they dealt with are still relevant and interesting to watch. Immigration, relationships, cultural identity - the world is still trying to figure out how to handle these facets of itself. Alien Nation tries to put them into perspective, and allows viewers to experience them at a safe distance - while making sure there is plenty of humor and action to keep everyone in the audience entertained. The episodes have aged very well, though some of the technology that the detectives use (especially their computers) will seem extremely dated and slightly off.

There are two big disappointments in this set: The first is that there are very few extras beyond the series itself, so don't expect episode commentaries, etc..(though there is a single commentary track for the pilot episode). The second is that the last episode (and, thus, the series) ends on a cliffhanger! What will happen to our favorite detective oddcouple? The answer can be found in the made-for-TV movie _Dark Horizon_ - but that's not included in this boxed set.

Physical and technical aspects of the DVDs: This set contains six double-sided DVDs stored in three slim DVD cases (two DVDs per case). The total space is about the same as one-and-one-half normal DVD cases. I am very happy with this setup, as the slim cases seem to make it harder for the DVDs to slip during shipping; the set also takes up much less shelf space. I experienced minor technical glitches during one of the episodes on the fourth DVD when I attempted to play it on my old DVD player, but using a newer system (a slightly dated Playstation 2) allowed the episode to play completely.

Note about the made-for-TV movies: there has been some concern from fans that not all of the TV episodes are in this set. While all of the TV episodes ARE INCLUDED, the five made-for-TV movies are not. The movies, _Dark Horizon_, _Body and Soul_, _Millenium_, _The Enemy Within_, and _The Udara Legacy_, contain all of the main actors from the series, and shared a similar look and feel. At the time of this writing, these movies were not available on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Missing parts.......2007-03-19

The DVD list Alien Nation the complete series but there are some episodes missing. Sikes had a relationship with a Newcomer named Cathy and this was not depicted on any of the DVDs that were sold in the set. If anyone can tell me where I can purchase the COMPLETE series please enlighten me.

3 out of 5 stars Alien Nation (tv).......2007-03-18

I liked this series and was sorry it went off the air. Though not as good as the original movie, but I still enjoy it. The underlying themes of racism, stereotyping, and xenophobia were generally well-portrayed (perhaps with a little too heavy a hand, at times). The acting and dialogue were all tolerable.

Alien Nation: They get drunk on sour milk. To some humans--including seasoned Los Angeles cop Matt Sykes (James Caan)--the Newcomers are unwelcome "slags." Francisco's Newcomer knowledge is vital to their investigation of an alien drug ring, and a friendship grows from life-or-death circumstances.

A routine cop thriller with a comedic sci-fi twist, Alien Nation has two things working in its favor: Caan and Patinkin form a memorable duo, and the basic premise--as conceived by Rockne S.

Enemy Mine: Lizard-like Draconian Louis Gossett Jr. and his mortal enemy, earthling Dennis Quaid, crash-land on a hostile planet during a brutal space battle. Forced to rely on one another for survival, they overcome their differences and become fast friends. You can almost hear them break into an off-key version of "It's a Small World." German director Wolfgang Petersen, so brutally honest with his film Das Boot, turns warm and cuddly on us with this intergalactic buddy movie. Much of the problem, though, is that the script sets us up for an intriguing encounter, then settles for a simple and sentimental resolution. Noteworthy set design and strong performances, especially by Gossett, push this beyond mere mediocrity. His performance is fascinating, as he must speak in an alien tongue, which he maintains with artistry and consistency. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Alien Nation is actually a good movie... I really enjoyed it... It was a bit like the days of the "X" files movies... It was good to watch. Enemy Mine is a fantastic Movie... I can watch this one over and over again.. Its really well made and Dennis Quaid is a little Hottie in it, I think its prob his best movie.. Its a movie you can watch anytime.

This is a good combo if you are into aliens and space movies. Although my children were not born when they made these they still enjoyed the movies. It is fun watching the reaction on the faces who are seeing the movie for the first time. I recommend this for family night.

4 out of 5 stars 2 Flics on 2 discs............2007-02-07

Hey, these are both classic SciFi movies! I really like that they are on seperate discs, in a slim-pack, AND the price would be nice for each, BUT NO!, you get 2 for the price of 1!!

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2007-01-10

Loved it, and so did my boyfriend. They're better as they get older.

3 out of 5 stars Starman: Savior Of The Universe..........2006-08-23

Once again, Starman (Ken Utsui) must save our planet from the evil-doers! This time around, it's those nasty foreigners from Mirapolia trying to take over Japan and the rest of the globe! They've got several atomic bombs and a new detonator device! Can Starman possibly defeat these forces of wickedness?? Watch him kick, flip, swing, and fly about in his trademark body-stocking w/ underarm wings! I enjoy these goofy movies, but then again, I'm pretty goofy myself...

4 out of 5 stars In my opinion, the best of the Starman movies.......2006-01-14

I think some of the guys running the IAEA should take a look at some of these old Starman movies. The leaders of the Emerald Planet may be the most ridiculous-looking aliens ever conceived by man, but they at least step in and take action when an evil, dictatorial saber-rattler makes secret plans to build and use nuclear weapons. Earth is always the source of the trouble, of course, and Starman is always the solution. These aliens think that the fallout from nuclear explosions will escape Earth's atmosphere and eventually cause the whole galaxy to be uninhabitable.

This is the third Starman movie I've seen, and I think these things are starting to grow on me now. I've made fun of Starman before - how can you not, really? I mean, the guy's the worst-dressed superhero I've ever seen, he can change costumes simply by bending over and standing right back up again, and he fights like a girl. Still, you can't argue with success. Surprisingly, the guy actually seems to have a personality in Atomic Rulers of the World - he heckles his opponent at one point, and he even grins a time or two. If you're wondering just who this guy is, here's the summary: his body has the strength of steel, he's got a "globemeter" that allows him to fly through space, detect radiation, and understand all the languages on Earth. He apparently also has an inhuman knack of figuring out where his enemies are whenever he decides to go after them. He's originally a product of a 1950s Japanese television series called Super Giant - in the early 1960s, episodes were cobbled together and released to Western audiences as a string of feature-length films.

For once, the bad guys threatening Earth are home-grown rather than alien. Those rowdies from the nation of Mirapolia have been smuggling atomic bombs into countries all over the planet in accordance with their plan to take over the whole world using nuclear blackmail. If they have to destroy a few countries to get their point across, it's no big deal to them. It's up to Starman to figure out this dastardly scheme, find the secret Mirapolian headquarters, and take whatever steps are necessary to prevent any atomic explosions from taking place.

Atomic Rulers of the World is a better Starman film than Attack From Space and The Evil Brain From Outer Space. It's less campy because its story is nowhere near as outlandish as the others, and Starman himself is a much more engaging fellow than usual in this one. Basically, Atomic Rulers of the World has Saturday matinee material written all over it, and most viewers will secretly enjoy it even as they make fun of it.

4 out of 5 stars You have to see it through a kid's eyes..........2005-03-12

I thoroughly enjoyed watching "Atomic Rulers of the World" on DVD. My partner has seen this movie back when he was 10 years old, and we just had to have it on DVD, to bring back memories.

There's something about black & white movies which makes watching an oldie so much fun. As far-fetched as this movie turns out to be, the story has its suspense and its drama, even though the acting leaves a lot to be desired. The scenes where there's fighting, have been poorly acted. Even "STARMAN" fights like a girl...and his "Steel-Strength" is doubtful.

The Distant Emerald Planet has discovered a secret plot on Earth, so diabolical, that it threatens the entire galaxy. The rogue nation of Mirapolia is distributing atomic weapons throughout the globe, determined to rule the world or destroy it.
The high council of the Emerald planet sends their bravest hero, STARMAN, to defeat the Mirapolians and remove the deadly menace.

Drawing equally on the unabashed heroics of the original Superman series and the atomic fear of Godzilla films, the Japanese television series Super Giant was assembled into full-length features for American audiences. The combination of martial arts action and sci-fi thrills made for an unusual and stunning adventure, unmatched even today.

The movie is dubbed into English from Japanese and it's obvious, for the voices are too "American-ized" and over-dubbed in places.
But...they did a remarkable job of synchronizing some of the voices to the movements of the actor's mouth movements. "STARMAN" (Ken Utsui is a handsome actor and he makes watching this movie fun. His costume is amusing and the way he flies through the skies...priceless!!!

I can only imagine how fun it must've been, as well as scary, to watch this through the eyes of a young child.
But...looking at it now...it's a great piece of nostalgia, as we can see how far technology and "Sci-Fi" filming has evolved.
Especially with the way they manouveured the model helicopters around, jerking them around on the end of a string as they entered the building (the hidden base at secret headquarters) in the side of a mountaintop. I had to laugh at that part, because it's so obvious, considering the technology they had back then.

Although the DVD insert & catalogue are in color, the movie is entirely in black & white.

Amazon.com Review
