In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. The DVD includes an above-average commentary by the director and Neumeier, several deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary and promotional featurette, cast bios, production notes, and more. --Jeff Shannon

The Complete Campaigns is a four-disc compilation of the Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles series that was originally released on eight DVDs: The Pluto Campaign, The Hydora Campaign, The Tophet Campaign, The Tesca Campaign, The Zephyr Campaign, The Klendathu Campaign, Trackers (including the four bonus episodes), and The Homefront Campaign. While Paul Verhoeven's dark, satirical adaptation of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers seriously strayed from the novel, this Verhoeven-produced TV series--part sequel, part remake, all CGI animated--hews closer to the spirit of the novel, a space-age twist on a World War II battle adventure. Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles is a series of military skirmishes and assignments on a variety of fronts, such as Bug City, water-dominated Hydora, the desert planet Tophet, the jungle planet Tesca, fiery Klendathu, and good old Earth.

The episodic nature works perfectly within this framework, and the mix of Marine grit ("No retreat, no surrender!"), military jargon, and understated melodrama give a feel somewhere between the steely seriousness of an old-fashioned war comic book and the spectacle and romance of a Japanese anime space opera. The CGI animation is less ambitious than in such feature films as Toy Story, but it's one of the most impressive examples of the animation made for TV. The detailed designs, rich textures, 3-D modeling, and awesome sense of scale (not to mention the pumped-up action and whiplash speed of the bug army) give it the look of an impossibly sophisticated video game, with the rat-a-tat editing and soaring camerawork of a Hollywood movie. The budgetary shortcuts are evident in moments of blurring and jerking, but overall it's startlingly effective. The PG-level violence may not be appropriate for younger viewers, but it's aimed at an older crowd and has won a loyal adult following.

The packaging is very convenient (a shelf-space-friendly four discs in Thinpaks), but unfortunately, serious Roughnecks fans will want to hold onto their old discs. Cramming the eight discs of content plus bonus episodes (granted, Trackers was a short disc) onto four single-sided discs apparently left no room for the producer/technical commentary tracks that accompanied most of the previous discs. The only bonus features are photo galleries and a fold-out illustration. --Sean Axmaker, David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Only lost one star since the series NEVER ENDED - they stopped 2 episodes short and quit making them.......2007-07-04

I own this and frankly it is pretty good if you liked the starship troopers movie (first one primarily since it follows that line, not the second and pretty cool one in the fortress).

This is very well animated, and the HUGE and ONLY problem is that the series never finished - the plug was pulled TWO EPISODES SHORT OF THE END. The bugs get to earth and start attacking, then we find out that they are taking over people, and we just found a way to strike back and BAM job's done series over.

I would recommend renting - this is not the kind of series you will watch over and over, or buy and resell, but it is worth the watch and is very good overall.

2 out of 5 stars Awful animation, poor physics shouldnt be allowed!.......2007-07-04

Like my title says, even when the technology was new, this looked god-awful. I'm a hardcore fan of the books as well as the movies, but this is just garbage. No extras, nothing. Plus you have to watch these guys and other objects bounce around, defying all physics. It looks worse than Captain Planet (the late animated crap)

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-27

This is a great DVD box set. It has the whole season including some of the extra shows that were created when the series was taken off the air. If you liked the show you will love this collectible box set. Just be aware that if you buy the box set you will not get the extra behind the scenes footage found in the individual campings found on DVD. If you like me and just enjoy the show, this box set is one easy payment and is one nice box set!

5 out of 5 stars Cheesy Goodness It's A Bunch Of Calcium In This One .......2007-07-02

I have never seen the entire movie. I always catch this movie in the middle of it. But from what I have seen this is one of the worst movies ever. But that is what makes it great. Lame monsters and terrible over dramatic acting team up to make a B movie classic. Now if you think this is an actual "good" movie you have some issues. If you appreciate cheese flowing through your tv screen into your living and down the hall out of the window and down the street then this is for you.

2 out of 5 stars The Movie Rips the Heart Out of the Story.......2007-06-22

Robert Heinlein's 1959 Hugo Award winning novel Starship Troopers is the inspiration for this very loose movie adaptation. Heinlein was a 1928 graduate of the Naval Academy and the author of over thirty science fiction novels. Starship Troopers encouraged the growth of the military science fiction subgenre.

Literature is a springboard for ideas, insights and intellectual growth but science fiction rarely aspires or reaches such heights. When I first read the novel as a teenager it provided insights into how a society might be organized and in the years since it has been a springboard for new ideas and growth. I'm not saying the novel is great literature but it is superior science fiction. It presents a plausible future society with an appropriate intellectual and philosophical framework. It is the philosophical aspect that is at the heart of the novel. This movie rips that heart out of the story.

Written during the height of the Cold War, the novel was the means by which Heinlein argued for a strong military. The story also is a vehicle to present his libertarian political ideas. While the story does contains more introspection, exposition, and character discussion than is common in the genre it has also been criticized as exceedingly pro-military and lacking in character depth and development. The story is pro-military but I do not agree that it lacks character development. However, one must remember that, unlike most science fiction, Heinlein was presenting ideas with the novel, not merely a story about killing alien bugs.

If the movie stood alone I might be able to recommend it based on some fine special effects, truly unworldly aliens and great action scenes but since I read and enjoyed the novel I could not enjoy this travesty of a movie.

Recommendation: Read the novel, skip the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Does Not Do The Book Justice.......2007-06-08

I was excited to learn that a movie was being made of "Starship Troopers", a favorite novel of my teen-years, and even more excited that Paul Verhoeven would be directing it since he had previously taken a much more mediocre story (Robocop) and made an excellent action film out of it. Unfortunately, the movie "Starship Troopers" does not live up to the promise of the original - highly controversial - novel.

Of course, it is hardly unusual to feel let down by film adaptations of favorite books. The screen-writer's need to compress into a couple hours a story that may have involved the satisfied reader for several days guarantees that something will be left out that one really wishes had been left in. Nevertheless, I felt that the screen writing took far too many liberties with Robert A. Heinlein's novel, and the film suffered as a result.

As one example, the original novel was full of observations about the responsibility of people to 'serve' society before becoming "citizens" with the right to vote and participate in the political process - and this aspect became controversial because of Heinlein's emphasis on military service. The movie touches upon this, but quickly simplifies it into a stilted fascist state divided between the non-participating "civilians" and the military veteran "citizens". While even that could have made for some interesting plot development, the film proceeds to ignore it completely to focus instead on soldiers in an interstellar war who frequently seem to treat combat more like a football match - even after they have suffered shocking casualties. (A more careful reading of the book, by the way, will find that many forms of service to society other than military were included among the things responsible people could do on their path to citizenship. I am afraid it would take too long to include that here, though, and suggest that anyone interested simply read the book.)

Finally, there is the matter of the characters. Heinlein had strong views on the utter pointlessness of racism. He chose to create a future in which racism was so completely extinct that no one at any point in the book ever comments, or even thinks descriptively about other characters in terms of race. But he does leave enough clues in the text so that you know that the central character - Rico - is Filipino, not the white guy (Casper Van Dien) presented in the film. Once again, I find it unfortunate that most of the book's more progressive ideas were erased by the film-makers and more so that having done this, they then fail to develop any storyline around the evidently fascist state they have created.

This does not mean the film was a total waste. As a low-brow action picture it is entertaining. But I really think the book furnished material that could have made a far better movie, with greater depth to both the characters and their situation, and I continue to hope that it will be re-made some day into a more faithful adaptation of Heinlein's original novel.

4 out of 5 stars A little campy............2007-05-25

This is hard one to nail down. It is fun, campy, it makes you wonder what you would do if this was really real. A little on the gory side, but you can understand where the characters are coming from; I have felt like several of them. Lots of action, fun and friends that don't usually enjoy this kind of movie has watched and enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars SC FI FUN.......2007-05-23

Allowing for all the low-budget shortcomings that plague any straight-to-video production, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation serves up 92 minutes of passable sci-fi action. Parlaying his veteran status as an animator, special-effects wizard, and stalwart survivor of the CGI revolution, Phil Tippett (with returning screenwriter Ed Neumeier) makes a woefully uninspired directorial debut with this makeshift sequel to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 blockbuster, retaining the jarhead militarism of Robert Heinlein's original novel while serving up more bugs, an all-new cast of attractive young stars, and all-too-familiar plot elements borrowed from a dozen better movies. "Bigger is better" is out of the question under such meager budgetary circumstances, so Tippett and Neumeier compensate with gruesome bugfights and gross-out effects at regular intervals, some standard-issue nudity, and escalating paranoia (echoing Carpenter's The Thing) when a new breed of bugs use human hosts (à la The Hidden) to overtake a stranded platoon of Federation soldiers on a bug-infested planet. Relying on murky confinement to hide nondescript sets, Troopers 2 has three engaging leads in its favor: TV regular Richard Burgi is solidly cast as the titular hero (he's the military equivalent of Pitch Black's Riddick); Colleen Porch is engaging as the most sensible Federation survivor; and screen veteran Ed Lauter makes the most of his salty role as a battle-hardened general. Unfortunately, they're adrift in a knock-off sequel (shot on high-def digital video) that could never do justice to its energetic predecessor. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars underappriciated.......2007-06-16

Most people did not like the sequal to Starship Troopers but i think it really makes sense, i mean, the first film was and action horror and the second is just plain psychological horror. its really re-invents the series and its based on another Robert A. Heinlein Book "Puppet Masters". so if you expect to see the sequal to be like the original, you will be dissapointed, but if you just see it as another horror movie, you will surely enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Just Comments.......2007-05-18

This is one of my favorites movies, resolution is very good, and quality of product is excellent (Zero Damage).

The bad point is that in Amazon.com there's not info of languages for this item, so I'm from El Salvador and it doesn't have Spanish Subtitles.

In overview this was a great purchase.

1 out of 5 stars negative 92 stars.......2007-04-23

If I could I would give this movie -92 stars, for each minute of my life I wasted on it. Such a disappointment for fans of the original Starship Troopers. It pretty much comes down to being a bad slasher movie. The only decent special effects scene was RECYCLED from the first Starship Troopers. The first scene in the movie is comical it is so bad. For fans of the first Starship Troopers who are curious about this movie I'm saving you the suspense and valuable hour and a half of your life.

3 out of 5 stars This sequal was just ok.......2007-03-12

I watched the ST1 and loved it. I thought, how bad can a sequal be? Ok, this was an ok sequal. It wasn't that exciting nor was it just plain bad. It is worth a watch, but keep your expectations down to nothing and come up from there. The casting wasn't that bad, the special effects were not that bad either. It was just a plain boring story. See it for yourself and make your own decisions.

1 out of 5 stars NOT what I expected. Don't waste your $$.......2007-01-16

I was a big fan of the ST1. The plot and characters were excellent, it rated up there with the best of them I would give ST1 5 stars. I saw this was on sale for a great price so I got it expecting great things. Usually sequels aren't to par with the originals so I at least expeted a 3-star movie. When i flipped on the movie i said "WOW....right where they left off" at a pretty good battle seen with the BUGS. Well, that was it I was waiting for more action. I waited....I waited...I waited and I waited...they made the plot intersting with occasional nudity but it still wasn't worth it. I don't know who's idea it was for the sequel but I hope this was their last one. I'll stick with the new Battlestar Galactic and Star Trek reruns.

--Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Heinlein Is Hard to FIlm (UMD Mini for PSP).......2006-09-11

This movie takes one of Robert A. Heinlein's books and attempts to translate it into film. This film follows the general precept of the book that mankind is in a war with a race of insect-like creatures that have various castes. As with the book the movie does not attempt to resolve the war, but does intend on providing some hope.

Heinlein has been called the Dean of Science Fiction. Because of his phenomenal success he was able to write beyond the boundaries of many of his contemporaries to express his viewpoints regarding society. The novel on which this movie was based was laced with several political viewpoints as well as predicting a future for the military that we can be seen as the trend of our military today.

When Heinlein wrote this novel in 1959 he tried to convey the simple concept that citizenship in the most free society on earth was taken for granted. Heinlein thought that perhaps one way of changing the definition of citizenship was to require that it be earned. Thus Heinlein advocated that all citizens should give two years of public service. Some people have narrowly construed this service to mean military service, but in his book Heinlein clearly stated that the service was governmental service and did not specify the type of service. In any case, earning the right to vote was central to the book. That concept was minimally discussed in the movie in favor or making an action-packed military monster movie.

Heinlein's future military was focused on the individual, with incredible weapons and training. Interestingly, our military continues to rely on ever-better weaponry with the individual soldier wielding ever more power and hopefully having better training as time passes. Again, the movie threw out this concept in order to make the movie move faster with multiple rescue scenarios. While Heinlein's bugs were not sympathetic, by having the bugs callously destroy a chunk of Earth real estate enables the audience to loathe them even more.

After throwing out two of Heinlein's key concepts, the result is a B science fiction movie with lots of gore and action. However, even with traditional science fiction themes, I liked this movie. The acting is only fair, much of the movie is "golly gee whiz" and salute the flag, and the plot has more holes than cheesecloth, and for all that it is a fun and exciting movie that I have watched at least four or five times. Some of the scenes are dramatic and scary, such as when the flying bugs attack and when the ground bugs spear people. The scenes with the tanker bugs are incredible. I have spent too much time trying to figure out how their burning dissolving fluid works.

There are places in the movie that are likely implausible, and yet, maybe not. When Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards) pilots a huge spaceship out of dock she does it by eye and barely keeps from damaging the ship and the dock. Clearly not standard operating procedure and had the ship been damaged she would have been fried (or should have) by her boss. However, she is cocky and overconfident and takes responsibility and authority, all traits that we try to cultivate in our military within the framework of standard military discipline. So perhaps parts are a bit far-fetched, but maybe not too far-fetched.

One aspect that I think Heinlein would have approved is the brutality of military training. People broke bones and suffered pain, just as they would in actual combat, though situations that cause death are clearly unacceptable. While the scenes of injury in training are initially shocking, medical technology in this future has the capability of repairing such injuries and being capable of handling the shock of seeing those injuries or withstanding them could give a soldier a combat advantage in the field; gruesome, but effective scenes.

The film was intended to be shocking, and it succeeds. This movie is not for children. I would not let anyone under the age of 14 watch this movie, even though there are a few video games with similar levels of violence. I think the movie is too violent for even young teenagers, and it deserves its "R" rating. There are a few scenes involving nudity and one involving sex that again may be shocking, but given the equality of men and women in this army of the future, the scenes make sense.

I have read the book and I still like the movie. This movie is not going to win any awards, but who cares? I think this is a great bowl of popcorn movie action film where you can relieve some stress as thousands of bugs are gruesomely terminated. There are times when you really want to root for the human race, and this one allows you to do so without guilt.

5 out of 5 stars Starship Troopers... great UMD fun.......2006-02-26

Hi... I'm new reviewing articles here in Amazon, so i hope to give good advice to anyone interested.
The movie is some kind of Platoon meets Starwars plus Sweet Valley high story. Althought at first, after the short introduction of Klendathu the movie slows down quite a bit during the high school part, but fortunately a few minutes later it gets speed again and don't lose it until basically the end of the show.
About the disc, the picture quality is great, and the sound is quite enjoyable, strongly recommended to have a good set of earphones to appreciate the real deal of the music and sound effects.
In a few words.... Great portable movie to go everywhere.

3 out of 5 stars Not another bug movie!.......2005-08-30

In defense of our world, school kids from Argentina join the military upon graduation. Military service is required for full citizenship. During their term they learn their new environment and grow together or apart as they battle big bugs from outer space.

Yep it is another bug movie. And the bugs are big. Too bad for the people that read the book. There is no way to justify this movie to you.

However this is a great parity on military types with the grunts being boxy shaped faces and bodies to match, the elite having pointy accouterments. And the gung-ho getting their brains sucked out. This looks like a pilot for a TV series. Male associate soldiers from the book were replaced with female soldiers who improved the shower scenes.

If you just have to take the 'Fascist Utopia' thing seriously then watch a serious movie where there is still a Paul sucked into the same situation by his teacher and others in "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930).

1 out of 5 stars exploits the success of the others.......2005-09-18

Unfortunately this disk is just one short espisode between the ones previously covered by other roughneck DVDs. Unless ofcourse my DVD is faulty and is only showing the first episode of many (I hope this is the case, and its not just producer greed).
The specials show additional footage that was not shown previously.
If the company that is producing this fabulous story is testing the waters before producing another episode. Ummm. Just do it!
Cheap work ups like this turn off fans, not inspire them.
I wanna buy more Roughneck episodes. One more cheap shot like this and you can kiss all my future $$$$ goodbye.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing Filler.......2005-03-03

The Roughnecks series is, in general, a very high-quality production. Trackers is disappointing not only because the disc contains only a single new episode, but even more so because the production quality of this episode is not nearly as high as it has been for all previously released campaigns/episodes.

I enjoyed watching the episode as a filler episode to fill us in on what happened in between the Klendathu and Homefront campaigns. But the animation is simply not up to standard I've come to love and expect from the Roughnecks series.

I sincerely hope that, whenever Sony finally gets around to having the final episode finished and released, it will be of much higher quality than the Trackers episode. It has been a while since the Roughnecks series was first produced and aired, and with advances in computing power it is reasonable to expect the final episode to look at least as good as the episodes that have been released previously.

5 out of 5 stars The Zephyr Campaign.......2007-02-28

The Best Anime I have seen. Wonder why they stopped making anymore series. I hope they make these more.

5 out of 5 stars Some really clever ideas.......2004-05-24

Roughnecks used the look and feel of the movie, plus a lot of the storylines of the book to retell the story of the Mobile Infantry fighting a war against an alien invasion. But they also introduced some unique ideas of their own and this episode had one of the better ones.

One intriguing idea that the series introduced was that of an alien race that did not use technology at all, but "bred" or "grew" whatever it needed. So their ships are biological, their artillery is biological, and they have various kinds of fighting bugs as well. That was a clever idea.

But this episode introduced another clever idea as well--the idea of giant "sleeper bugs" that could sleep in space for perhaps thousands of years, looking like an asteroid, until one day waking up to head off to a new planet to invade. I don't know if that is a unique idea of their own, or if the writers got it from science fiction literature, but it is clever. The one downside is that they never really show this sleeper bug very well.

Something that I liked about this series that this campaign showed off well is that the story does not always progress in ways you would expect, but in some ways is more "real." For instance, at one point the troopers manage to get the Zephyr off the ground only to crash it only a short time later. I did not see that coming.

One downside is that the commentary tracks occasionally leave something to be desired. The filmmakers often re-cover the same background and explanations that they have on previous discs and we don't need to hear all of that stuff again.

5 out of 5 stars Glued to my TV!.......2004-03-08

Having read Starship Trooper when it was first released many years ago, I felt like a purist when it came to the movie and a viewer of the Chronicles. But having purchased the first six dvd's and now this new one, I am hooked and convinced that this series is a winner big time.
I am a bit confused about the issue of the last two episodes. I watched Homefront and of course I was totally irritated by the fact that the producers left our heros on earth with bugs doing there dirty best to wipe out the human race and nothing follows.
Are the missing episodes the undrawn conclusion to Homefront episode? I would hate for the bugs to win in the end. :(
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR PURCHASE to anyone that loved the book and the movie. Our heros get more time to rescue all our butts and it is a great story.

5 out of 5 stars Give US More.......2004-01-09

I totally agree with everyone that's reviewed so far. We need the missing 2 catchall clips and the last few episodes!! Why stop when your so close to finishing the mission?

4 out of 5 stars More is better!.......2003-12-28

I'm glad to finally see all* of the completed episodes make it to DVD. They produced some wonderful work, and getting this show into the hands of it's fans is a great accomplishment. Hats off to Audu! Thank you!

However, portions of the footage seems grainy, like it was over-compressed, especially shots inside the dropship. I have heard this from others, but don't know if it was a bad batch, or that's the best they could do (...since this story arc was not originally meant to be released to DVD. And then, only after fan pressure.).

Oh, and am I the only one who is bothered by the fact the "M.I." logo on the Special Features menu is upside-down?? ...on every arc DVD? That aside, I would still recommend R:STC to every fan of Starship Troopers! Collect them all! I did!

with absence of L.T. and Sarge, rico has taken command of the roughnecks. his new Top Kick is the drill sargeant from their boot camp days - voiced by the actor that played him in the movie! if that's not the epitome of cool, rico has to deal with a brash new team member - Sarge's football hero son. this set of shows deals in rico's growth as a leader and the blossoming romance between himself and flores. how they find the time for that, i have no idea.

i think this is the best of the entire series and the most intricately concieved made-for-tv computer animation ever. i'm stunned.

4 out of 5 stars A little schizophrenic, but still enjoyable.......2004-05-24

Trying to figure out how this series was produced was a little confusing. The plan was to produce 40 episodes. However, the filmmakers ran low on money late in production and so they cheated a bit. They made several "clip" shows that were nothing more than scenes from previous episodes strung together. They skipped an episode completely (episode 33). So there are not really 40 complete episodes, which explains why there are only seven discs, with an eighth due in June 2004. But they also did not film the final three stories that they wrote--the stories that end the war. This campaign ends and the war is still raging.

But when they released the DVDs they also did some annoying things. For starters, the DVDs are not clearly numbered, so it is a little hard to figure out which one is first, second, third, etc. unless you look that information up. Some of the filmmaker's commentary tracks are repetitive. But one of the more annoying things is that they actually SKIPPED an episode that was after the Klendathuu Campaign and before the stories on this DVD. That one had the troopers hunting down the alien queen in space. The result is that this campaign starts rather abruptly with the war over and no explanation as to how that happened. It is really annoying and you only learn what happened by listening to the commentary track. That episode will be released in June 2004, but its exclusion from this disc lowers the value of this DVD.

That said, there is some excellent storytelling here, and also some plot holes. A major character gets killed and the troopers hold a funeral for him. It is fairly powerful for a show that was ostensibly aimed at kids.

[SPOILERS]

However, I also was annoyed at some plot holes. For starters, at one point we are told that earth has been devastated by the bugs and that "no major landmarks remain standing." Then a few minutes later we learn that San Francisco is completely intact. When Lt. Razak gets killed he is blown up, underwater. Yet in the next episode the troopers are gathered to spread his ashes over a lake. Where did they get the ashes from? He was blown up! And in the final episode, when they are battling on Hawaii, most of the action concerns their efforts to keep a radio tower up and yet one wonders why they don't simply use satellite communications. The show was usually well thought and executed, but occasionally they had the characters do rather stupid things just so the plot could carry along.

5 out of 5 stars Roughnecks : Starship Troopers Chronicles.......2003-08-30

I have to say that I usually do not watch cartoons whether they be celluloid or CG but I make an exception here. Not only is this an action packed series but it also has intelligently written scripts. The characters are believable and you do end up actually caring for them and hoping that they don't get skewered by bugs. I have watched every episode to date except the last Chronicle which has yet to be released, the Zephyr Campaign was just released last week so we're almost there. I recommend this entire series to anyone who loves SST or sci-fi for that matter and I know anyones children will love it too.

The Roughnecks take a breather from combat (or so they think) to scout the desert planet Tophet for a possible base, and meet a race of tall, lizardlike, apparently friendly aliens they dub "skinnies." But nothing is as it seems in this intergalactic war, not even the double-crossing skinnies, who have laid a deadly trap for the humans. The truth behind their collaboration hides an even more disturbing twist in the bug infestation of the universe. Dry, desolate, and full of wide-open spaces, "The Tophet Campaign" is a sci-fi take on a World War II platoon drama in the African desert. It lacks the visual spectacle of other adventures but makes up for it with heavy artillery (including an experimental cyborg soldier loaded with firepower) and more complicated character dynamics. The eerie mental breakdown of telepath Jenkins gives the Roughnecks their first casualty of the war. --Sean Axmaker

Description

In "The Tophet Campaign," young journalist Higgins, fearless war hero Rico, and courageous female Trooper Flores land with their fellow soldiers on a desert planet. They meet a group of humanoid Skinnies who make them feel strangely at home--until gigantic killer bugs appear. Lieutenant Razak accepts help from a newly designed Trooper robot, who quickly saves the team from an intense ambush of massive crawlers. But the Skinnies have more than one surprise in store for the Troopers, proving again that the universe-wide bug war is far from over. 96 minutes.

The Best Anime I have seen. Wonder why they stopped making anymore series. I hope they make these more.

4 out of 5 stars Skinnies!!!.......2004-09-03

this animated series of starship troopers is far more respectful of the book than the film was. with skinnies and jumpjets, you just can't go wrong here.

the group of marines end up on the skinnie home planet of tophet. you really get a good feel of the alien race and their practices. it's super hot on this red planet and the series never lets you forget it - something i love about these guys. they effectively put you in terrestrial environments and force you to feel like you're actually there.

great episodes include the skinnie capture of the marine force and their escape. rico's new pet squirrel-thing friend and the robot that joins the squad is particularly awesome. look for the skinnie trap-rifles! they are exeptionally cool!

4 out of 5 stars TRUE TO HEINLEIN.......2002-04-22

Columbia Tristar has released two more episodes of the fantastic CGI animated "Roughnecks: Starship Troopers" series. "THE TOPHET CAMPAIGN" and "THE HYDORA CAMPAIGN" continue the incredible extra galactic war in proper chronological order (unlike the original TV broadcasts). Robert Heinlein's visceral and highly ironic sci-fi action (and perhaps fascist satires) are truer to the source material than the theatrical version. The animation is incredible and consistent in tone. Great characters interact in wonderfully detailed landscapes and interior spaces. A richly nuanced color palate greatly enhances the feel of these neatly arched episodic set pieces. In "Tophet" the action takes place on a desert planet where the oddly humanoid "Skinnies" make them feel way too comfortable. But alas, the bug war is not over. "Hydora" is a water planet where the advance team hopes to locate and extinguish the bugs' home base. Here they encounter the terrifying Mother insect who controls the bug universe.

4 out of 5 stars They Just Keep Getting Better!.......2002-03-25

I've just discovered this animated series, long after its brief and troubled TV run. I'm viewing the DVDs in the "correct" order: Pluto, Hydora, Tophet, Tesca. Having just finished Tophet, I can only say that they keep getting better! It's the best one I've seen so far. I'm perplexed by a previous review that "warns" us of its inferior visual quality. No way! It's clear that Foundation Imaging really began hitting their stride with this arc. The animation of the troopers was incredibly fluid and lifelike. Their faces look even better. The bugs, the equipment, the scenery - all fantastic. The episode with the cybernetic trooper C.H.A.S. was especially good. I can see now why I've read that it's a fan favorite. An absolutely first rate sci-fi experience.

The scripts continue to grow in sophistication, with surprise twists and startling developments. As always, the voice talent is first rate.

If you intend to buy all of the disks, then I definitely recommend viewing them in order. If you're just looking to try one out, this is the best of the first three DVDs. Tesca may well be better, but I don't know yet. I'll let you know!

--Jeff Shannon

But I really think the book furnished material that could have made a far better movie, with greater depth to both the characters and thei
