There isn't a sci-fi show on TV that has done more with less than Farscape, the adventures of a motley band of fugitives in a mercenary universe, and the second season of this unpredictable series races to a breathless climax in this five-episode collection. After escaping the clutches of mind-cops in "A Clockwork Nebari," the crew of Moya steel themselves to free the son of warrior D'Argo from slavery in the thrilling three-part "Liars, Guns, and Money." They launch both an elaborate heist of and a Dirty Dozen-like commando raid on the most impregnable vault in the galaxy (run by a sadistic, eye-collecting lizard woman who could be an Alien pinup), while all-American boy John Crichton goes schizophrenic as visions of the show's cadaverous über-villain Scorpius dance in his head. The action-packed, high-powered trilogy is followed by "Die Me, Dichotomy," a cliffhanger finale that tips Crichton's increasingly precarious identity over the cliff. The hostile alien worlds, organic designs, and dark, textured sets are among the most creative on TV, and the dynamic, densely plotted story line approaches epic proportions. It remains a high water mark of the series.

Be aware that, to fit the trilogy "Liars, Guns, and Money" on a single disc, the episodes are presented out of order. The two-disc set also includes deleted scenes, featurettes on actress Gigi Edgley and her wild-child character Chiana, as well as galleries of art, stills, and definitions. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Farscape: Season Two Volume 2.5 episodes: "A CLOCKWORK NEBARI" A brainwashed Aeryn and Rygel return from a Commerce Planet with a surprise for Chiana-two fellow Nebari to take her home and "mind cleanse" her as well. Chiana learns her brother, Nerri is still alive and now the head of the Nebari resistance movement.

"LIARS, GUNS AND MONEY-PART I: A NOT SO SIMPLE PLAN" A plan to steal loot to buy D'Argo's son Jothee from the Slave Traders goes terribly wrong when D'Argo is captured in the heist. The crew's attempt to rescue him is complicated by the arrival of Crichton's nemesis Scorpius.

"LIARS, GUNS AND MONEY PART II: WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE..." Scorpius wants to make a deal: D'Argo's son in exchange for Crichton. A plan to use the stolen loot to hire old foes and rescue Jothee makes sense, until it is discovered that the valuable ingots are actually alive... and eating Moya!

"LIARS, GUNS AND MONEY PART III: PLAN B" No money. Angry mercenaries. An injured Moya. And Crichton in the hands of Scorpius! Only an all-out assault has any chance of rescuing him. But even if Aeryn's plan succeeds, can Crichton rescue his own mind from Scorpius?

"DIE ME, DICHOTOMY" The neural chip Scorpius put in Crichton's brain finally takes over, turning him against our crew. Aeryn is forced into a deadly confrontation with Crichton/Scorpius that only one will survive.

4 out of 5 stars Farscape is great!.......2007-04-02

I started watching Farscape in Season 3. I watched all episodes and reruns I could get my hands on. I think they were INSANE to drop it from television.

I eventually bought the entire collection at once.

The only reason I gave this a 4 out of 5 stars, is because of the quality of the DVD. The inner clips of the box break very easily. The DVD always defaults back to subtitles between episodes, which is really annoying.

Even with the problems of the DVD, I love this set.

5 out of 5 stars Still One of the Best.......2007-01-04

This series, all of it, is still one of the most original, well-written, well-acted science fiction adventure shows to come along in years. I've heard it said it picks up where the "bar scene" in Star Wars left off. But it goes way beyond that! It's a show that can be watched over and over yet always please visually, and stories are seldom predictable. Superior writing, excellent acting, and easily some of the best special effects seen anywhere. I only wish there had been a season five.

5 out of 5 stars Best...show...ever!.......2007-01-04

The whole 4 seasons are fantastic. Season 3 was, imho, the best ever, but, season 4 was heartbreaking and breath-taking and second only to season 3. Buy it and watch over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Sex, Chocolate and Farscape.......2006-11-10

. . .even when it's bad it's still pretty good.

If you love Farscape, why are you even reading this? Buy the DVD and beat yourself for waiting so long. If you don't have the money, get off of Amazon and get a job. It's worth having and if you don't have this one, how are you going to have all 12? "Gotta Catch 'em All"

5 out of 5 stars Some of my Favorite Episodes of the Best Series Ever Put on TV.......2006-09-08

The Best? I don't know, but it's up there. Season four of Farscape starts out a little unevenly and without the intensity of season three, but here in collection two something starts. It begins in "A Perfect Murder," continues in "Coup by Clam," then it goes into overdrive in "Unrealized Reality," and it never looks back. I'm not going to try to judge which episodes of Farscape are the best, but the second half of season four, begining with "Unrealized Reality," together with "The Peacekeeper Wars," are the episodes I watch over and over and over and I never get tired of them. That is why it was such a tragedy that there was never a season five. Yeah, there's only one commentary; I'll live. This is Farscape, and this collection has some of the best episodes Farscape produced.

5 out of 5 stars Teh Farscape saga.......2007-05-14

Love this series!! Am in the process of collecting ALL the episodes and have every intention to watch it over and over again until I am in my 90's and can no longer see! Then I will listen to it! I am continuing to follow Ben Browder and Claudia Black on SG-1 but the original Farscape crew is impossible to beat!

5 out of 5 stars big fan.......2007-05-07

I wish I'd been a loyal fan when this show originaly aired. Thanks to Ben Browder coming to my favorite series my interest was renewed. Farscape is by far one of the most original and well developed scifo shows I've seen in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars ADVideo woke up and saw the problem ... finally!!.......2006-09-15

Finally, I can give this series 5 stars. As with many other people, the first 6 collections were very problematic, freezing, skipping, popping or just flat out not playing. While some die hard fans mark my reviews unhelpful as I report the disc quality and not the quality of the show! (I figure you know what you are buying! and would better like to know the quality of what you are getting.) The series is a solid 5 in my book, and has always been so, but not the first 6 collections due to the double sided, dual layer format that caused so many to be returned, as with other folks here I too had to return 4 of the 6 before I was able to get a collection that would play properly. WITH THIS COLLECTION ... ADV finally saw the light! They released the collection on single sided disc, and while I'm not happy with ADV as I asked if there was a problem with them long, long ago and they just acted as if it was the first time they heard anything. I had to contact them as I was having trouble getting a RMA AGIAN for a bad disc, by correcting the release and putting them on 4 disc instead of 2 they have all but admitted there was in fact a PROBLEM! Even though they would not admit it months ago. I even have an email from them stating there was no plan to release them on 4 disc! I guess they got as tired of complaints as buys got of returning them. The single sided collection is far better than the prior as you would think in quality, no skipping, no popping, no freezing, nothing but good solid Farscape fun and entertainment, without having to try and skip over bad spots or fiddle with to get it to play.
We can only hope that ADV will offer a trade in offer on those releases already out to upgrade to the problem free collection. Sure it will cost them money, but it cost those of us with bad disc time and money to find one(s) that worked. (A 80 mile roundtrip drive for me in rural Kentucky) The very least they could do is to offer a replacement collection at cost for the first 6 collections. As of this writing I do not know if they plan to release the first 6 collections (2 seasons) on single sided disc or not, however a wise company would. My guess is you will find a lot of 2 disc collections on eBay if they do. Again a great series finally on enough disc to justify buying it. Plenty of extras over the boxset releases, albeit again many are repeated from disc to disc and collection to collection, overall good video and audio quality for hours of viewing. Well worth adding to your collection for those Farscape fans, just hope the first 6 releases are corrected and re-issued.

5 out of 5 stars This show is *awesome*!!!.......2006-08-14

I haven't seen all the episodes (yet) and there are many episodes that I have only seen once. This might be my absolute favorite DVD set yet just for the number of scenes that I've watched repeatedly - because they were either dramatically or comically fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars The Second Starburst of the Second Season.......2007-05-14

As a diehard Farscape fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this second Starburst into the Second Season. The 7 episodes contained are "Dream A Little Dream", "Out Of Their Minds", "My Three Crichtons", "Look At The Princess Part 1; A Kiss Is But A Kiss", "Look At The Princess Part 2; I Do, I Think", "Look At The Princess Part 3; The Maltese Chrichton" and finally "Beware Of Dog". You also get a 30 minute interview with Virginia Hey entitled, "Building Zhan" as well as Deleted Scenes and Bloopers from Season 2, The Farspeak Game which challenges your knowledge of some of the vocabulary used in the show, and Actor biograpies for Anthony Simcoe (D'Argo) and Virginia Hey (Zhaan), The Moya Menu, A segment of cool Farscape Facts, Alien Encounters and Alien Races Multimedia Gallery using cuts from the shows and a production design gallery of drawings. There are more things in there from this season as well as season 3, making this a rather busy 4 disc set from ADV Films.

I was very happy to be able to catch all three of the "Look At The Princess" episodes one after the other as it is almost like having a Farscape Movie before the "Peacekeeper Wars" came about. The episode of "My Three Chrichtons" was also a stretch for actor Ben Browder, playing three different versions of his character, each sharing characteristics but in some rather unexpected sideways slants. The Episode of "Out Of Their Minds" also is unexpectedly filled with some tongue in cheek humor as the characters are shifted about in their bodies one from another and take up the personalities of each other with some rather unexpected results as well as curiousities satisfied. If you can't afford to get an entire seasons' run, the Starbursts are a good value for the dollar.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love Farscape........2007-04-17

Weird critters, great characters, strange plotlines, and lots of things that go 'boom.' This set includes the "Look at the Princess" three-episode arc and "Out of Their Minds" (which, yes, includes the switching-bodies gimmick--but when you have as good an ensemble of actors as this, it works very well).

I'm really glad that ADV switched to four-disc/single-sided sets instead of the 2-disc/double-sided sets. I haven't had any problems with skipping or freezing.

Simply the best science fiction television program ever. Superb acting, scripts, visual effects and music. Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS!!!! IMPORTANT!!!!.......2006-09-08

The negative reviews pertaining to quality issues are no longer valid. ADV has discontinued the 2 disc editions and now releases the Starburst editions as 4 disc sets - similar in setup to the box sets but including the extras from the previous Starburst edition. That said, be warned when purchasing these discs from a third party vendor through Amazon. The product details are the same so there is no reason to expect you'll get the 4 disc set instead of the 2 disc set. Even Amazon (see above) has an incorrect product assessment -- they call this a two disc set but ship the appropriate four disc set.

Farscape is tied with Red Dwarf and the Stargates as one of my favorite shows of all time. I love the starburst editions for their price and the considerably smaller shelf space compared to the previous release of Farscape on DVD. My one complaint is the cases are crap. Most of the cases for the starburst collection have 1-3 disc hubs broken. I forget where but I eventually found the case manufacturer and was able to order repacements. The replacements were the exact size but the disc hubs had been greatly improved.

5 out of 5 stars So good it hurts.......2005-12-07

Ok, So I am a textbook phlegmatic, and not given to emotion. Not in life and certainly not in the context of a television show. But I have to say that "Die me Dichotomy" actually hurts its so good. I was on the verge of tears with this show a number of times. And that particular episode really does a number on ya. The acting is excellent. The story epic. Its absence tragic. If you haven't picked up this show yet. Please do yourself a favor. I promise you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Farscape takes it to an epic level with 2.3!.......2005-11-24

Starburst Season 2, Collection 3 has been my own personal 'most anticipated' release. The Liars, Guns and Money trilogy along with Die Me, Dichotomy mark Farscape's jump from amazing storytelling to epic drama.

What I've always loved best about Farscape is the risky storytelling. Farscape wasn't afraid to do anything or go anywhere and nothing illustrates that better than the story that unfolds in the last four episodes of season 2.

I'm also thrilled that a commentary has been added to Die Me, Dichotomy. I'd had my fingers crossed that I would get to hear Ben Browder and Claudia Black's thoughts on such a pivotal episode.

Collection 2.3 ushers Farscape to a new level. I'm incredibly happy with the dvd and I'm so happy with the extras ADV has included. One can hardly even debate over the 'worth it' factor with these Starburst editions considering the cheaper price and extensive extras that are included.

1 out of 5 stars DVD Quality VERY LOW - Series and Extras Excellent!.......2005-11-09

This reveiw is more about the quality issues with the disc more so than the content of the disc. For the record ADV has added a lot of extras that is not anywhere else. Albeit many are repeated multible times on different disc of this STARBURST series release that could have been better used reducing the compression ratio. As for the quality issues, these are recorded on dual layer double sided disc and as of this writing I have had to send 3 of the 6 currently released back to be exchanged due to skipping, frame freeze, audio cracking etc. The disc were checked on 3 players and a computer and did the same on all of them. So the issue is with the quality or the lack thereof. I have contacted ADV about the quality issues and they have more the most part said ... 'Oh well.' The more pricey collection did not have these issues, but lacked many of the extras and you get what you pay for. Granted to be fair when the disc work, the video and audio quality is fine, but it is annoying to get to the middle of a show and the disc freezes up and up have to skip over 10 or more minutes to get it to play. ADV simply tried to squeeze to much into to small of a space. This collection really should have been put on 4 disc instead of 2. They did not include scene selection either, you can only choose which episode you want to see then fast forward through the tracks after that. As I said I love the show and it is a healthy 5 but this release's quality is a sickly zero.

5 out of 5 stars Better than previous editions.......2007-01-12

The starburst edition has all the extras, of course. But previous starburst editions came on double-sided dvds that I had troubles with, and others did as well. But now you get four single-sided dvds that I haven't had any problems with so far. It's my favorite tv series, I've watched it several times. I guess the first season or so is a little hoky at times (which I kinda like actually). But the first and second lay a lot of groundwork for the characters that make watching the third and fourth a better experience.

5 out of 5 stars Farscape - Great storytelling, Impressive Graphics...It doesn't get any better.......2006-09-01

When I first saw Fascape when it premiered in 1999, I immediately fell in love with the show. It's genuinely original storyline, muppet effects supplied by the Henson Co., and the depth of characters as the show progressed only heightened my affection for this, in my opinion, short lived show. For anyone that is wondering about this show, primarily if they are thinking about starting to collect this very affordable and well done DVD collections, they should know that this show had enough of a fan base to practically unseat a CEO of a company.

From what I have read and heard, when a new female CEO was named for the Sci-fi Channel in 2003/2004, the first thing she did was to cancel Farscape. She thought the show cost too much and that the story was too linear based, meaning that people who had never seen an episode would not be able to understand it because they hadn't see the preceding storylines that progressed the show. Anyways, this was a bad idea. Between 2 and 3 million people boycotted the channel because they cancelled their favorite show. On top of that, it was the Sci Fi channels top rated and most popular television show at the time. Needless to say, the board of executives threatened to releave her of her position with a vote of no confidence, so she allowed the creators and actors to come back and finish the show with a 4 hour miniseries. The reason I mention this is because the show is just that damn good, and if it had the fan base to change a company, then I would have to say that alone is proof of how great this show is and always will be.

I also used to work for a Suncoast store, which is primarily retail priced with the occasional sale in the store. The original retail price for the season box sets of Farscape retailed at $149.99 a piece. Outrageously priced, even for a good show. However, I still sold many, many copies of the Farscape box sets while I worked there, once again showing the show is just that damn good that people would spend that much hard earned money. These Starburst collections are just what the doctor ordered for people in the middle class like myself. You get all the episodes of whatever season you would like in 3 separate box sets that combined still only cost half of the full season box sets price. The Starburst collections also have great quality episodes, lots of documentary info, and cool facts surrounding the creation of the show.

If you like Farscape then I recommend buying these right now. If you have never seen it then buy the first starburst box just to see what you think and it will only cost you $20.00.

5 out of 5 stars Really The Best Edition .......2006-05-06

Farscape is one of the best sifi shows period. I wish they got more publicity. I heard of it and started watching it at the end of its last season. If you like this show, and are thinking that maybe you want to buy some episodes, Only get the Starburst Edition. It has all the extras and gives you about seven shows per set at about $20US. The boxed season sets are about twice that price, and are missing some of the cool extras from the Starburst Edition. There is also another edition out, but it has nothing for extras and is even more pricey per episode then the Boxed set. Enjoy the maddness, with Jim Henson's best creatures since Starwars.

The beat goes on for television's Farscape sci-fi series with this, the third volume of episodes from the show's second season. This two-disc set includes five episodes: "Out of Their Minds," based on a clever mind-switching premise in which the cast flexes their collective acting chops; "My Three Crichtons," which finds Crichton (Ben Browder) meeting up with both primitive, Neanderthal-like and futuristic, super-smart versions of himself; and "Look at the Princess," an elaborate three-parter. Farscape fans will no doubt debate the merits of this season versus the first run, and while the stories may not be as strong this time around, the character-driven episodes feature the other qualities that distinguish the show--namely its mix of drama and humor, convincing effects, and the delightful puppet characters designed by the Jim Henson Company. DVD features include deleted scenes, a bio of actress Virginia Hey (and a study of Zhaan, the character she portrays), and more. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Look at the Princess.......2003-03-07

4 very strong episodes, and one somewhat weak episode: Out of their Minds has good performances by 6 of the actors playing one another's characters in the Farscape turn on the old "body-switching" cliche, some character development, and rather backstabbing bird-like aliens. The three-part Look at the Princess is brilliant, with lots of character development, political intrigue, assassination attempts, confrontations with various bad guys (including an early encounter with a Scarran, and a complex bit of dancing with Scorpy), backstory on Moya, and an intriguing central plot point; like the other great three-part arc episodes (Lies, Guns and Money, and the interrupted Nerve/Hidden Memory/Family Ties), it really pushes the series along and bears rewatching again and again. My Three Crichtons, on the other hand, is just a rewrite of the old "split into two halves" SF cliche with the two halves being "past Crichton" and "future Crichton," but with the original combined Crichton being kept around for safety. Tiny amount of character development, but really not up to the standards of the other episodes.

3 out of 5 stars The Cows Have Not Come Home.......2002-10-30

This review is not meant to criticize the phenomenal series, but to draw attention to lack of quality in the DVD release. The first season of Farscape on DVD established a quality of excellence that has yet to be matched by the second season. There is a definant lack of the highly informative, as well as entertaining commentaries thus far in the second season. Character backstories as well as alien encounters have been diminished from actual interviews to mere reading material with no additional insight. And this particular set claims to have "deleted scenes." Season 2 had previously deleted scenes available on an extras menu, but this release does not indicate that on either disc. If they were reincorporated back into the program, a "commentary would be helpful to let us know what's new to us since the original US airing as was done in season 1.

I cannot help but to wonder that since this fine program has such a great US fan base, why are we just recently getting season 2 while season 3 is already in Australia? I know that the show is filmed there, but is that any reason to make us wait? And I can't help but to wonder if their DVD's contain even more footage and informtion that is not supplied to us.

I think that the notion of setting four or five episodes per set is supposed to make up for that which is lacking from the season 1 releases. I am grateful that my affection for this program has not been diluted by those that market it for public sales. And although I will miss the future episodes that will never be aired, thanks to the myoptic suits in charge of not allowing this incredible vision to continue, I will not mourn the loss that the vision of what fans have been forced to accept as a definative release of a now, not-so "commercial product" in this consumers' eyes, has suffered from a multitude of selfish corporate wrongdoings.

Both the wit and wisdom of Farscape are readily apparent in this two-disc, four-episode set from the popular TV series' second season. The former shows up in "Beware of Dog," in which a parasite manages to board the organic mother ship Moya; although the creature's attack on D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe; bios of both the actor and his character are among the set's DVD bonus features) is serious business, both it and the "Vorc," an E.T.-like critter whose job is to destroy parasites, are played for laughs. Meanwhile, the show's more serious side can be seen in "The Locket," which finds Crichton (Ben Browder) and Aeryn (Claudia Black) growing old together on a strange planet--and sharing some of the genuine emotions that have been brewing between them since the show's inception. Either way, Farscape fans will surely find much to admire in this set, which also includes deleted scenes and various other extra material. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Still fabulous!.......2003-04-26

Even the worst episode of Farscape is better than any other SciFi source available today!

5 out of 5 stars Pip, it's time for a reality check.......2003-01-24

If you're reading this you're probably a long time fan of this cancelled series or a new raw recruit. There are a number of negative reviews about some of the episodes contained on this disc. I'm not exactly sure why. Clearly the folks were expecting something else--something they had seen before perhaps.

Defying that very expectation is what made Farscape special. Yes, Beware of Dog isn't as earthshaking as the cliff hanger of the previous season (or even the three part episode set on "Royal World" as Crichton humorously calls it). It's meant to be Farscape's Trouble with Tribbles with a much darker, edgier tone. You'll either love or hate the tone of this fine episode as it indulges in a bit more humor than the average episode. Star Trek: TNG vet Naren Shanker's script plays with our perceptions of the characters. There's a witty line of dialog that references Aliens (having Chiana say it was an inspired touch. There's also a number of humorous visual references to E.T. and a tip of the hat to Joe Dante's Gremlins)

Won't Get Fooled Again is a marevlous episode that plays with both audience expectations, Crichton's previous experience with a simulation of a return trip home and the essence of the show's regular characters. It also reveals important information about why Scorpi keeps showing up in Crichton's wakeful "dreams". It's another way for Scorpi to be in the script, interacting with Crichton even in the setting of Moya. It's marvelously paced and Ben Browder gives a superb performance (as do all the actors playing against character "type")as a man losing his mind. Kudos to writer Richard Manning for pulling off an episode that, essentially, revisits theme from the previous season and Rowan Woods' surreal directorial touches (the red pumps on Crais is a marvelous touch).

The Locket focuses on the outcome of Crichton's infatuation with Aryn. It's a great "what if" episode that, again, defies expectations. It's a heartfelt episode that focuses on character and the various character's expectations of each other. Writer Justin Monjo's script and Ian Watson's direction are both top-notch.

The Ugly Truth could have been a routine episode. By dint of the performances, direction and writing it overcomes many of the limitations of the basic premise. The dialog by first time Farscape writers Gabrielle Stanton and Harry Werksman, Jr. has some sparkling dialog and character moments. The opticals exceed expectations in what could have been a simple "bottle" episode.

This quartet of episodes are among the best the second season had to offer. The next boxset will focus on a strong trio of episodes that unfold what Scorpi really did to Crichton and the disasterous outcome of his shipmates attempt to save him.

The transfer is top notch with little or no analog or digital artifacts. While the entire series has looked really good, it's clear that ADV has hit their stride with the second season set. I did notice some analog artifacts on the previous set but it wasn't a huge distraction. There's no such problems that I can see here. The extras include deleted scenes, conceptual artwork, a biography of Anthony Simcoe as well as a backstory on D'Argo. There's also the first part of a text/visual driven look at the various alien species.

The sound is, for the most part, exceptional (except for some of the deleted scenes where it's clear that it came from a broadcast episode probably created for a foreign market with no stereo or 5.1 sound available).

While I did have problems with some of the science in some of the previous episodes (Crichton's escape in one episode was engineered by decompressing into space and using a gun to propel himself to another craft. While it's possible, the amount of time Crichton was in space could have killed him. He didn't look any worse for the wear. It's a nice little tribute to a similar scene in 2001 though).

4 out of 5 stars FARSCAPE really is the best of television.......2003-01-21

All right, WOW! I've been eagerly awaiting this release because of 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. One of the first eps I'd seen (after 'Hidden Memory') and still one of my favorites! The acting and directing on this series is simply brilliant.
'The Locket' is another I really like. A character-driven plot-line(not much action in this ep. Sorry.)that really lets you see into the characters, how they've changed and grown.

That's it! Never written a review before...

1 out of 5 stars Sci fi finally had the wisdom to cancell this garbage.......2003-01-16

How this travesty survived 4 season and gathered a fan base is well beyound me. Bad acting and poor writting mar this badly thought out attempt at serious science fiction. Just terrible

2 out of 5 stars quirky.......2002-12-23

I've been waiting for farscape to pick up this season, and (for me alone apparently) it's only gotten worse. I'm kind of shocked that other reviewers are dishing five stars so liberally. I thought these were all pretty boring. These (4) stories have potential at times and do manage to tickle you with an oddity here and there, humor as well, but it's too slow and a little lacking in the entertainment vector (and I really hate Dargo's new 'softer side'). Shamefully, I admit the primary reason I don't like these episodes is the lack of space scenery or battles. Not many special effects and locations are a little average and low budge. As always of course, the animatronics are top notch. Reviewers really seem to be taken with these 4 episodes though, so maybe it's just me.

The second volume of episodes from the cult cable science fiction series Farscape finds the motley crew of fugitives still learning to live together, with often fractious results. A swarm of interstellar insects infiltrate Moya in "Exodus from Genesis" and crank up the heat to levels that will prove fatal to Aeryn's heat-sensitive Sebacean system. The heat wave isn't the only thing pushing already flaring tempers, however; the bugs create perfect replicas of the crew to carry out their commands, which lead to some rather interesting clashes. The episode echoes elements of Star Trek's "The Devil in the Dark" and the Next Generation episode "Evolution" (among others), then twists them to fit into the chaotic Farscape universe.

In "Throne for a Loss," the most action-packed and stylishly directed episode to date, a race of mercenary criminals called the Tavleks kidnap the imperious Rygel. Despite the temptation to leave the blustering coward behind, the crew hatches a (typically) half-cooked plan to storm the planet-side prison with the help of a dangerously addictive Tavlek power gauntlet. The adrenaline-pumping, laser-blasting weapon increases the aggressive natures of D'Argo and Aeryn to tyrannical levels but also leads to a quiet connection between the warriors as they recover from the drug's effects and compare notes on their human shipmate: "Just imagine, there's a whole race of Crichtons running around. Think how useless they must be."

Each episode includes footage unseen in the U.S. broadcasts, and the DVD features a profile of Claudia Black's character Aeryn Sun as well as commentary on each episode. Director Brian Henson and costar Virginia Hey (Zhaan) discuss the process of defining and developing their characters in the early episodes on "Exodus from Genesis" and stars Ben Browder and Claudia Black exchange playful repartee for the energetic commentary on "Throne for a Loss." --Sean Axmaker

Description

"Exodus from Genesis": Fortunately, a strange interstellar phenomenon conceals Moya's location from a Peacekeeper marauder. Unfortunately, the phenomenon is a swarm of Drak, insect-like creatures that mysteriously infest Moya. Soon, the space insects begin using the ship as a breeding "host," sending the temperature within Moya skyrocketing--perilously high for Aeryn's heat-sensitive Sebacean system. But the infestation within is nothing compared to danger lurking outside!

"Throne for a Loss": When a cargo negotiation with the bloodthirsty, money-hungry Tavleks turns into a kidnapping, Moya's crew must race against time and tempers to save the abducted Rygel. But a captured Tavlek is no even trade for a wealthy dominar. Crichton, Aeryn, and D'Argo have no choice but to use a dangerously addictive, adrenalin-pumping gauntlet stolen from the Tavleks to save their pompous companion and retrieve the crystal Rygel has stolen that is causing Moya's orbit to decay.

4 out of 5 stars Crichton tries to fit in with his Farscape crew mates.......2003-01-10

I started watching the first season of "Farscape" on DVD without ever having seen the show on television (I knew it was the show with the blue skinned woman and that was about it). My assumption is that nobody is going to come to Volume 2 of Season 1 without having watched Volume 1. Consequently, I get to engage more in commentary than description for this review.

"Exodus from Genesis" is a story designed to have Crichton (Ben Browder) earn the respect of his crewmates. Moya is invaded by aliens who are able to assume the form of the crew. If that is not enough fun a squad of Peacekeepers boards the ship as well. Like the previous episode, "I, E.T.," this is another instance where "Farscape" is getting ahead of itself. Episode 3 is too soon to be doing a story where the actors play reproductions or possessed versions of their characters. We still have so much to learn about these characters, which means details like the problems Aeryn (Claudia Black) has with high temperatures is of more interest than how many copies of Crichton can show up in one room.

"Throne for a Loss" find Rygel kidnapped and held for ransom. Crichton, Aeryn, and D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe) go off to rescue the floating puppet. Their efforts are compromised by the acquisition of a gauntlet, the weapon used by the bad guys. Unfortunately, the gauntlet tends to make its user a bit psychotic, as each of the trio of rescuers discovers. However, Crichton wants to rely on good old human honesty to save the day rather than alien technology. The most interesting part of this episode is back on Moya, when Zhaan (Virginia Hey) is trying to help their prisoner deal with the loss of his gauntlet and the addictive chemicals it provides its user. Of course Zhaan is the most fascinating character on the show and every new revelation about her becomes another piece of the puzzle.

One thing that is already clear to me by this second disc from the first season is that "Farscape" is extremely fan friendly when it comes to putting the episodes out on DVD. First, the episodes contain previously unbroadcast footage, which means all the stuff they cut to show "Farscape" on American television (apparently we have 3-4 minutes more commercials than the rest of the civilized world). Second, all of the episodes feature commentary by a pair of cast and crewmembers: Brian Henson and Virginia Hey on Episode 3 and Ben Browder and Claudia Black on Episode 4. I assume future DVDs will continue to mix and match these people in various combinations. Having two people engage in a conversation works well and all the participants tend to talk about not just the particular episode but also their characters and the series overall.

4 out of 5 stars "Exodus"--3 stars; "Throne"--4 stars.......2002-11-20

"Farscape" has developed into one of the best shows on television. Enjoyment of these early episodes is enhanced by the addition of deleted material and lively commentary. "Escape from Exodus" is an enjoyable story, but far from "Farscape" at its best. The tale of an infestation by space parasites is enlivened by entertaining character interaction, always one of this show's strengths. "Throne for a Loss," on the other hand, is terrific. Rygel, as despicably hilarious as ever, is kidnapped by the Tavleks, a race of warriors who rely on an addictive drug, administered through "power gauntlets," to heighten their power and aggression. To save Rygel, Aeryn, Crichton, and D'Argo all take their turns with the weapon, and the way in which it affects each of them provides interesting and amusing insights into their characters. The way in which Crichton resolves the conflict is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Thrown for a loop!.......2002-03-13

As a Farscape 'fledgling' (always seem to get into shows in the second season) I'm enthralled with this series.

Exodus from Genesis explores the developing relationships between the ship's crew during a crisis on Moya. It painfully lets us experience how totally inept poor Crichton feels by being thrust into the alien universe in which he finds himself. Beatuiful acting on the part of Claudia and Virginia in many scenes, interspersed with some amusing segments in spite of the seriousness of the situations they encounter.

Throne for a Loss depicts Rigel at his best and worst. Gives a keen insight into his more sinister traits. I had no difficulty understanding why the crew were (a little) tempted to leave him planetside after his abduction.

The extras on the DVD were wonderful and the commentaries thoroughly enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Treat for SF Fans!.......2002-02-23

One of the strengths of good sf on television is that it takes the characters and basic elements of its "universe" and adds to and develops them. FARSCAPE is no exception to this rule, and does it quite wonderfully in this pair of episodes.

"Exodus From Genesis" is about a bug infestation on Moya, and the surprising truth of what is behind it. With a commentary track version of the episode by Brian Henson and Virginia Hey, the episode has some very good character interaction, and the extra footage on the disc presents some rather intriguing material for fans of Zhaan. Solid episode, good story, with some neat visual effects.

"Throne for a Loss" is an episode that deals with an attempt on Moya's crew to trade with beings called Tavleks that takes an unexpected turn when Rygel is kidnapped for ransom. Excellent sense of humour in this episode with some great lines from various cast members, and the extra footage here makes the episode worthwhile. However, when one adds the commentary track with Ben Browder and Claudia Black, one has an episode version that offers all kinds of insights into the episode and how it was made (among other subjects discussed by the two actors).

Overall, a marvellous DVD and well worth adding to any collection of sf discs - but even better that it's a FARSCAPE one!

5 out of 5 stars Nice episodes, great extras.......2001-09-10

I admit it--I came a bit late to the Farscape party. But ever since my jump into the series during the mid-point of season two, I've been hooked. So, I'm delighed that the entire series is coming on DVD and giving a relatively new fan like myself a chance to catch up on the early days in the Uncharted Territories.

And this DVD contains one of my favorite episodes from the first six or so and then one that's pretty darn good. The "pretty darn good one" is Exodus from Genesis which features parasites who feed on Moya. The story works because it does what Farscape does best--takes an old sci-fi convention and gives it a new spin. There's also some character development along the way, which is always a good thing.

The second episode is one of my personal favorites--"Throne for a Loss." Rygel is kidnapped by the Tavleks, who think he's a high-ranking offical that Moya's crew will pay generously to have returned to them. The premise of the episode works well and it's interesting to see the character relationships begin to grow and gel a bit. But the highlight of the story is that while the situation is serious, there is still some great humor thrown in. It's Farscape in the finest tradition--intelligent, witty and fun. Definitely worth seeing--even if you're not a Farscape fan.

What throws this DVD other the top though is the extras. Both episodes include commentaries that really help the episodes become more interesting. The commentary on Throne for a Loss is a hoot, featuring series stars Ben Browder (Crichton) and Claudia Black (Aeryn). There's an infectous energy in the the commentary that carries over to the episode and helps give some now insights into the series and its early days.

So, if you're a long time Scaper, get this one for the commentaries. If you're a new fan, get this one to see two episodes that show just why Farscape is some of the best sci-fi on TV today.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of the best of a great series.......2006-03-16

Farscape is about ten lightyears beyond any other scifi series out there in terms of plot, depth of characters, tension, humor, creatures, production values, or anything else you can think of. Start watching from the very beginning, but rest assured: The "Liars, Guns and Money" trilogy on this set is one of the highlights of the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful ending of the second season!.......2003-07-28

The last five episodes of the second season are truly wonderful. A great story line and set supported by wonderful performances really hook you for the third season. One simply needs to know how things turn out. I am truly impressed with the quality and scope of Farscape. If you have not watched the show yet you should go back to the very beginning of the first season and watch all the episodes. It is a great story! As mentioned in a review below you should make sure to watch the second episode on the FIRST DVD last (the episodes are out of order). Outstanding show! Shame on the Sci-Fi channel for cancelling this creative work.

    5 out of 5 stars Fun show.......2003-03-29

Very entertaining show. These are some of the best episodes of the second season.

    5 out of 5 stars What a sad loss..........2003-03-25

I remember starting a thread on the farscape newsgroup about how I worried that the series would end up cancelled much as Babylon5 was. Alas, here is a dvd set that shows what a tragedy it is. If this is the first Farscape you have read reviews about-
My feelings toward this show are best summed up by the feeling that I actually care what happens to each of the characters. It is as though they are my friends. It is said that the Henson group planned a 5-season story arc, One can only hope they'll manage to do a movie or two to finish it.

5 out of 5 stars New Fans Be Warned.......2003-03-02

I started watching Farscape into the fourth season....my son finally conviced me to watch it. A little ironic isn't it, since it has been cancelled!
So...I have been buying all the dvds and going back to the beginning. I have enjoyed every episode, even though I know about some of the future. Now to my warning...for people like me, trying to watch the show from the beginning, and for people like me who just purchase without always reading amazon comments, BE WARNED that the episodes are out of order on this dvd set. I watched the final episode of the set, which is on the first dvd, and boy was I confused. I went to a web site that lists all the episodes and of course, I figured out what had happened. So, buy these, enjoy them, but do it in order!!!
