In this clever speculative tale, story collaborators Karl Alexander and Steve Hayes and screenwriter-director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II and VI) send two famous historical figures ahead in time. In late 19th century England, writer H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) unwittingly includes Jack the Ripper (David Warner) in his social circle. When one of Wells's dinner parties is crashed by the police looking for the Ripper, Jack uses the author's time machine to escape. But there's one catch--after it has been used, the machine returns to Wells's time. Thus the literary genius bravely sets out to find his evil friend before he can wreak havoc on another time period, and soon arrives in modern-day San Francisco. What follows is a fascinating merger of a suspense thriller--as the charming and polite Wells tries to hunt down the shrewd, brutish Ripper and take him back to the past--and a love story, as Wells befriends and falls in love with a bank administrator (Mary Steenburgen) who acts as his guide through the future. Through its brilliant combination of creepy suspense and tender romance, Time After Time manages to become a classic in two genres at once--a rare cinematic achievement. --Bryan Reesman

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea gets a dose of On the Beach in Irwin Allen's visually impressive but scientifically silly Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. While the Seaview, the world's most advanced experimental submarine, maneuvers under the North Pole, the Van Allen radiation belt catches fire, giving the concept "global warming" an entirely new dimension. As the Earth broils in temperatures approaching 170 degrees F, Walter Pidgeon's maniacally driven Admiral Nelson hijacks the Seaview and plays tag with the world's combined naval forces on a race to the South Pacific, where he plans to extinguish the interstellar fire with a well-placed nuclear missile. But first he has to fight a mutinous crew, an alarmingly effective saboteur, not one but two giant squid attacks, and a host of design flaws that nearly cripple the mission (note to Nelson: think backup generators). Barbara Eden shimmies to Frankie Avalon's trumpet solos in the most formfitting naval uniform you've ever seen, fish-loving Peter Lorre plays in the shark tank, gloomy religious fanatic Michael Ansara preaches Armageddon, and Joan Fontaine looks very uncomfortable playing an armchair psychoanalyst. It's all pretty absurd, but Allen pumps it up with larger-than-life spectacle and lovely miniature work. --Sean Axmaker

Description

A routine scientific expedition to the North Pole turns into a race to save all mankind when a radiation belt in space causes a fiery inferno on Earth. Admiral Nelson (Walter Pidgeon) and the crew of the atomic submarine Seaview battle saboteurs, giant sea-creatures and attacks by enemy submarines as they race to prevent global catastrophe. Renowned disaster film producer, Irwin Allen, produces and directs an all-star cast including Joan Fontaine, Barbara Eden, Peter Lore, and Frankie Avalon. The stunning visual effects and breathtaking underwater photography make this one of the most respected sci-fi adventure classics of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Irwin Allen's triumph now remastered with loads of extras.......2007-06-22

Great early 60's sci fi with some cool extras including an interesting short feature on global warming, nice gallery of theatrical posters and lobby cards, good informative commentary and some good information on the "making of".

There also is some photos of the actual props used in the film. Unfortunately the quality of the photographs is rather weak and there's really no decent close up shots. You can rotate the image, but it's really lacking in detail.

The movie's a fun thriller with espionage, giant sea creatures, believeable sets and props and some above average acting with Walter Pigeon, Peter Lorre, Barbara Eden and a large cast of lesser knowns as the crew members, including pop star Frankie Avalon.

One thing that seems rather humorous though but in retrospect also is sad at the same time is all the smoking that takes place by the cast, especially Peter Lorre who seems like he has a cigarette in his mouth in nearly every shot he appears.

All in all a very enjoyable underwater adventure film that will please any baby boomer age fan of sci fi and Irwin Allen disaster pics.

A recommended purchase especially at this low price point.

5 out of 5 stars Relentless Action, Wonderful Miniature & Process Effects--Great Fun........2007-06-16

You either suspend your disbelief, or you don't. If scientific accuracy is important to you, don't invest in this movie. If colorful action, and in the main, great special effects are your cup of tea, hmmm....this might be a movie for you. Overall, Irwin Allen's best work. Unlike some of his later (big) films, he directed Voyage as well as produced it. And very unlike The Swarm (which he also directed, I hate to admit) this movie works. It cooks, in more sense than one.
The miniature special effects were brilliant for the time and still hold up today. Forget computers, all this stuff was created using miniature and process photography and is wonderful to watch. Irwin Allen was his strongest directing action scenes. Fortunately, Voyage is loaded with action, much of it far more intelligent than a lot of what is passed off today as big budget CGI potboilers.
The extra production art and photos are worth the price of admission. Barbara Eden looks wonderful, both in the film and in her interview. Hats off! Great, fun flick.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Allen Sci-Fi.......2007-06-11

Nice to see Fox finally give one its sci-fi classics the DVD treatment it deserves- now I can only hope they do the same for " Journey to the Center of the Earth"

4 out of 5 stars Science on the Brink of Destruction.......2007-05-05

See...the Van Allen Radiation Belt catch fire in the vacuum of space!
See...giant icebergs sink to the bottom of the ocean.
See...Barbara Eden's shapely legs.
See...Frankie Avalon sing during moments of incredible DANGER!
See...a rubber octopus capture divers as they swim by.

See it before you laugh to tears in this unintentionally funny scifi "masterpiece" of Master Disaster Irwin Allen!

A hilarious film with overacting the likes of which you rarely see. Walter "Morbius" Pidgeon plays the overly exhuberant Admiral Harriman "Crash Dive" Nelson as he takes his "have submarine, will travel to any marine disaster" to fix the Van Irwin Allen Belt!

4 out of 5 stars Thrilling 1960's Sci Fi Drama That Spawned The Series .......2005-01-31

Viewing Irwin Allen's sci fi drama "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", recently after many years was like going back in time to the days when I would race home from school to see the next exciting episode of the popular series that this film spun off into. Viewed critically by viewers nowadays for the simple special effects and often absurd science on display, I see it rather as simply a very enjoyable 100 minutes of good old fashioned science fiction which for the time was very state of the art. Remarkably the film still holds up well for the most part with the great Seaview atomic submarine and the still quite frightening effects of the sky being on fire and melting the Polar Caps, being the real standouts in terms of special effects technology. For a film of this type it has a quite memorable cast in acting veterans Walter Pidgeon, Joan Fontaine, Peter Lorre, and Henry Daniell combining very well with such "younger generation" performers as Frankie Avalon, Barbara Eden and Michael Ansara.

The story opens with the new state of the art submarine, the "Seaview", captained by Admiral Nelson (Walter Pidgeon), doing some research work near the North Pole when a catastrophe of world wide significance occurs when resulting from some unusual meteorite fallings the Van Allen Radiation Belt surrounding the Earth's atmosphere catches on fire encircling the planet in a fiery mass that sends temperatures soaring up to 130 degrees. Called back to New York to a meeting on the UN Admiral Nelson with the assistance of Com. Lucius Emery (Peter Lorre), works out a scheme whereby shooting a missile from the Seaview at a certain point and time into the radiation belt will extinguish the fiery mass. Convinced of his theory Nelson meets strong opposition from most Un delegates who feel it will burn itself out when it reaches a certain temperature. Capt. Nelson decides to taking it upon himself to ensure that the missile is fired at the appointed time and taking his crew and a reluctant visitor , Dr. Hiller (Joan Fontaine), along on the dangerous mission, the Captain encounters many difficulties along the way to the North Pole. Admiral Nelson becomes increasingly tyrannical in his leadership as he contends with an increasingly cynical offsider in Capt. Crane (Robert Sterling), dangerous mine fields, a pursuing submarine sent out by the UN to hunt the Seaview down if necessary and on board an unknown saboteur who seems intent upon ruining his plans to fire off the missile. Finally after half the crew decide to go no further and attempt to return home on an abandoned ship and the remaining skeleton crew experience a tense stand off with a bomb carrying religious zealot Miguel (Michael Ansara), who they had picked up off the ice, the missile is finally shot off at the appointed time proving Admiral Nelson's theory correct that the radiation belt would not burn itself out and could only be destroyed by a nuclear blast at its centre.

While certainly no cinema classic "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", does take itself very seriously which gives the story a certain ring of authenticity despite some of the questionable science employed. Earnest performances combined with good special effects for the time greatly aid in making the story seem a bit more memorable than what probably it actually deserves. Walter Pidgeon a veteran of countless Hollywood classics takes a distinct change of pace here from his earlier famous collaborations at MGM with such people as Greer Garson, and turns in a convincing performance as the Admiral who literally shanghai's the Seaview in a mad dash to prove his theory on how to destroy the flaming Van Allen Radiation Belt. His performance turns from affable to increasing manic as the deadline for firing the missile approaches and makes for an interesting depiction of how a man's mind can snap under pressure. Fellow veteran Joan Fontaine while at times looking a trifle uncomfortable in her role of the psychiatrist who is unwillingly involved in the mission still manages to bring conviction even to the highly silly premise of when she takes matters into her own hands and Hollywood legend Peter Lorre making what must be one of his last performances as Admiral Nelson's offsider in the scheme to fire the missile, delivers his usual capable performance. Being the 1960's Producer Irwin Allen having his eyes on the booming teen market made sure that the cast was sprinkled with upcoming faces such as Barbara Eden (Pre "I Dream of Jeannie), and singing heart throb Frankie Avalon who also sings the oddly out of place theme song. At first glance they may appear slightly out of place on a nuclear submarine however Barbara Eden in particular does a reasonably good job as the young love interest to Capt. Crane while also managing very well in getting about the submarine in dangerously tall high heels! Irwin Allen did enjoy great success with his special effects in this film and the sight of the whole sky literally burning up along with the terrific underwater scenes are still highly impressive. Much ridicule has been directed at the whole premise of this story however I feel the idea of a radiation belt catching alight and frying the Earth's surface is actually quite an original and at times quite frightening idea and for the most part is handled in a quite convincing way if you ignore some of the scientific impossibilities of what the cast carry out. The addition of an unknown saboteur and the fatalist character played by Michael Ansara work well in heightening the drama and addign to the tensions along the way in the story and definately help keep up the viewers interest.

"Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", is definately a trip back to a simpler time in sci fi film making but that should not be viewed as a critcism of the film. I've always felt it has a bit of the old Saturday matinee feel to it and I still find the movie great escapism for a bit over an hour and a half. Irwin Allen of course became much more famous later in the decade for his sci fi television series version of this movie and of course for "Lost in Space", but this movie was done on a more lavish scale than most of those efforts and still is worth seeing for its own merits. Try to see the original sci fi movie that became the long running series of the same name in Irwin Allen's exciting "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", soon.

Supreme silliness doesn't stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day and Godzilla, you can't blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerich's films, this one emphasizes special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters and plausible plotting, and his dialogue (cowritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff) is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. It's the spectacle that's important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father and son (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal) who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummeled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, and Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans and then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. It's all wildly impressive, and Emmerich obviously doesn't care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? --Jeff Shannon

Description

When global warming triggers the onset of a new Ice Age, tornadoes flatten Los Angeles, a tidal wave engulfs New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. Now, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a small band of survivors must ride out the growing superstorm and stay alive in the face of an enemy more powerful and relentless than any they've ever encountered: Mother Nature!

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2007-06-13

I saw this movie when it was released, and I must say I was not impressed.

The concept of the movie had some serious potential, but the ball was dropped due to a number of factors. One, the stoy was rushed. Almost instantly the viewer is thrown into the story with very little build-up, which also costs the viewer time to get into the characters and actually get to care about what happens to them. Secondly, when it comes to the order of how things happen, there is no order. Random acts occur almost out of nowhere and without any real explanation. I know that nature itself is unpredictable and for that reason only, it works.

Also, due to the rush of the story as I mentioned, there is no time to really get into the characters and thus, there is no reason to care about them (aside from the dog.) I found myself actually saying that these people weren't prpared and they deserved what they got!

Overall, its a good movie to watch just for the heck of it and getting a good laugh; but its not worth any time beyond that.

3 out of 5 stars Creating a State of Fear.......2007-05-26

The film shows scientists in the antarctic, their tests show global warming is increasing. The paradoxical result will be a frozen earth! TV news shows snow in New Delhi, large hailstones fall in Tokyo. The strongest hurricane has been recorded. A scientist's young son has discovered the politics of education. Sensors measure drops in the ocean's temperature. Birds and animals are restless and disturbed. What in the world is happening? Tornadoes in Los Angeles destroying the city! People are squashed like bugs. Typhoons in Australia! Could the North Atlantic current be changed due to melting ice (fresh water)? [It was cute to have a President who resembled Al Gore. But is the rest of the film just as correct?]

Their computer projections show a disaster is only 6 to 8 weeks away. The worst storms will soon be here. But the Vice President [looks like Dick Cheney] can't be bothered. The temperature dropped so fast people froze to death in Scotland. The water level has risen so fast New Foundland is flooded. Water is flooding the subways and tunnels of Manhattan. Is it the end of the world as we know it? A huge tidal wave hits New York City! [These special effects are really great!] Now super-cooled air is being pulled into the atmosphere to create a new Ice Age! Anyone who goes outside will be flash frozen. There is no escape for anyone. The southern states will be evacuated, there is no hope for those Yankees north of the Mason-Dixon line.

[Hollywood films usually have a happy ending.]

Back in the real world discussion continues on the effects of Global Warming. From the 10th to the 14th century the world was much warmer. Greenland was a green island where settlers lived on their crops. Southern England raised grapes for a wine industry. That changed in the 14th century, increasing cold led to food shortages, famine; then the Black Death killed over 30% of the population. [Read Barbara Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror" for one view of those times.]

2 out of 5 stars Saw it twice, and that was enough........2007-05-08

Nice multiple storylines, people you could almost care about (The homeless guy and his dog were the best) but still left the film with the feeling that I didn't get my money's worth. Oh well.

1 out of 5 stars Should have stuck to the original story........2007-05-29

This movie could have been so much better, as could the remake.
If you have actually read the Pierre Boulle novel, and seen Rod Serlings
original draft and Artur P Jacobs pre-production artwork, you can really appreciate what a disaster the final outcome was.
In the behind the PLanet of the Apes dvd, there is the original screentest showing Edward G Robinson as Zaius, the Orangutan makeup was so much better, than waht eventually turned up.
This film really needs to be made the way it was intended, with the astronauts landing on a parralel world, where the apes are technologically advanced.
Actually the ending of Burtons remake stuck pretty true to Boulles ending of the planet of the apes.

5 out of 5 stars Apetastic!!.......2007-02-25

At first glance Planet of the Apes appears to be a silly sci-fi movie populated with men wearing monkey suits, but it is actually a film with such serious themes as animal testing, science versus religion, nuclear war, and man's self destruction nature and to a lesser extent some good old fashions 1960s don't trust anyone over 30 years old paranoia.

Charles Heston portraying Colonel Taylor is fine overacting form and generally dominates the screen while chewing the scenery. The human characters roles are mostly under acted while the ape roles are meaty and more memorable. Roddy McDonnell, playing the chimpanzee Cornelius, did such a memorable job, and I guess enjoyed wearing a monkey suit, that he is the only actor to appear in all four Ape sequels.

The movie is able to compensate for its low budget by shooting a part of the movie in the American southwest. At times the viewer is reminded of the classic John Ford westerns with many long angle shots and the pursuit scenes. It also serves to give the film an almost other worldly appearance. The scenes shot in the ape city are somewhat cheesy and could have used a bit more effort. But what makes the movie are the ape costumes. The costumes were so brilliant that make up designer, John Chambers won an Honorary Academy Award for outstanding make up achievement in a movie.

One of the marvels of the movies is that even though it is a low budget movie it is still incredibly entertaining and thought provoking. A lesson that today's C.G.I. movie makers need to remember is that a movie is not judged not by the quality of it special effects but the content of its story. The producers of the 2001 Planet of the Apes seemed to have lost that notion. The remake was an overblown, dull headed bore; it is everything that the original was not.

This movie is a special meeting of great source material, Pierre Boulle'sovel, a Rod Sterling screenplay, a great action star, Charles Heston, imaginative special effects and a director who had more creativity than money. It is no wonder that Planet of the Apes -spawned a movie franchise, a television series, an action figure line, and countless spin offs (books, graphic novel, comic books and even a video game)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sci-fi movies ever.......2007-02-17

This sci-fi movie has something unique- no special effects but it is a classic. A testiment to this are the numerous follow-up movies and the recent remake. If you have not seen it you must even if youare not a sci-fi fun. The story is unique and actually very anti-war and potrays a (remote) posible future of mankind. The casting and directing are excellent. See it.

5 out of 5 stars The original apes classic is the only one to see.......2007-02-06

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD: Of course, 1968's "Planet of the Apes" had one huge plot hole, that being the fact that in 40th century Earth, apes have aquired the intelligence to speak, become doctors, scientists, politicians, etc.. Chimpanzees and orangutans are now standing at six feet tall. Two thousand years is way too short a period of time for that kind of evolution. And the film also gave no actual explanation of how the humans lost their intelligence, and started behaving like primitive animals. But the fact that the rest of the film is so good, these plot holes are forgivable.

The film has a great story. It has an effectively erie post-apocalyptic feel to it, as Heston and the other astronauts are trekking across the 'forbidden zone.' Then, the film remains effective in displaying Heston's sense of isolation, frustration and eventual vindication, all from his ordeal in the ape society, after the loss of his human companions.

This is definately the version to watch, instead of the terrible 2001 remake.

4 out of 5 stars solid, dark sci-fi with good characters.......2007-01-19

I vividly remember having seen this when it came out. Heston was phenomenal as an action hero, and a wonderful actor to boot. While the sequels lost me, this I always thought was a great film.

So I got a copy for my kids. We viewed it together and greatly enjoyed it. They were full of questions and observations - always a good sign - but also enjoyed the action. My son (7) talked about it for the following week.

As I have not seen it in about 35 years, I was surprized at how much I liked it. Usually, on viewing a sci-fi oldie I enjoyed at 6 or 12, I am disappointed at how flimsy it seems in terms of plot and realism. Happily, this is hard sci-fi in that it is at least not impossible, and there are interesting characters: Taylor the cynic, Dr Zeias the guardian of orthodoxy, and the scientist/intellectual chimps as well as Cornelius, the rebellious young one. The story hangs together well and has a startlingly fresh conclusion that is not happy.

Warmly recommended for all ages.

Third in a series of films based on the bestselling novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, Left Behind: World at War finds the post-Rapture Earth an even bleaker place than in the previous movies. As the Antichrist himself, Nicolae Carpathia (Gordon Currie), uses his newfound powers as head of the world government to bring war and plague on every nation, the American president (Louis Gossett Jr.) teams with a Christian resistance fighter (Jessica Steen) to try to stop him. Meanwhile, series hero Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron) discovers that Carpathia's biological front in a coming apocalypse is particularly devious: Freshly published Bibles are carrying a deadly disease ravaging thousands--and may very likely claim Buck's new bride. Buck's father-in-law, pilot Rayford Steele (Brad Johnson), has problems of his own facing the not-inconsiderable temptations of former flight attendant Hattie Daniels (Chelsea Noble), now one of Carpathia's many lovers. Directed by Craig R. Baxley (Rose Red), Left Behind: World at War is particularly crisp and effective drama, even when the action stops, as it often does, for many of the principals to pray for guidance. Charles Martin Smith (The Untouchables), not seen often enough these days, has a brief but powerful part as the U.S. vice-president. --Tom Keogh

Description

In the prophesied world of the Book of Revelation, global icon and world leader Nicolae Carpathia (Gordon Currie - Left Behind) has finally done the unimaginable - he has managed to unite the world in peace - and bring an end to the bloodshed that has ruled the world since the beginning of time. American president, Gerald Fitzhugh (Academy Award winner Lou Gossett, Jr.- An Officer and a Gentleman- Best Supporting Actor 1981), has shared that dream, and has dedicated his Presidency to making sure that the world's most powerful nation didn't stand in the way of that dream. But when a failed assassination attempt opens his eyes to an underground world and a horrifying glimpse into a sinister conspiracy, Fitzhugh must come to terms with the agonizing truth - World War III is pounding at the door- and his dedication to the dream of peace has left America powerless to defend herself. With the help of investigative reporter Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron - Left Behind, TV's "Growing Pains") and his underground Tribulation Force, Fitzhugh battles against a ticking clock, insurmountable odds, and his own closed mind, to try to find a way to stop the death of millions of people, and perhaps the end of history itself.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.......2007-05-14

I'm very pleased with the purchase I made. I bought a DVD and it was brand new unopened as advertised. It came in a timely manner, and was exactly as I expected.

5 out of 5 stars It was great!!!.......2007-05-07

If you have seen the first two then you have to see this one it will leave you breath less!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Big Let Down.......2007-02-20

I am a big fan of Cloud Ten Pictures. I have seen all of their movies and one of their documentaries. I liked all of them-except this one. I remember getting all excited about it. I remember crying becasue I thought the UPS truck wouldn't come to deliever it on the day the website said it would (but it did, just later than I thought it would.). I remember watching the trailer over and over again. I remember when it finally came, I was extermely eager to put it in.

But then it all changed. About fifteen minutes into the movie, it was already starting to get boring. However, as a loyal Cloud Ten Pictures fan, I forced myself to sit through the whole movie. I was VERY disappointed with it. It was very boring, and some parts just made no sense whatsoever. For instance, when Bruce is having that dream that Nicolae has the doctor's mask on, pulls it down, and says "You know who I am. We used to be good friends." What's up with that? It was just random, and made no sense.

Also, Nicolae is in this movie for fifteen minutes I'f guess at the most. The scenes with Nicolae in them are the only worthwhile scenes. The only reason I gave this film three stars is becasue of the noteworthy ending with Fitzuh and Nicolae.
If you are thinking about buying this movie, don't. It's boring and, at times, makes no sense. Try some of Clkoud Ten Pictures' other movies like the Apocalyp[se triology instead!

3 out of 5 stars Why did they stray???.......2007-02-19

I enjoyed immensely the first two Left behind films, even with their deviations from the books, however with this third one something seems to have changed. The writing just isn't as good, sure there are great moments in the film, but there were far to many just plain cheesy events for my taste. The message is still excellent as aways, and the visual effects are quite good, but the script seems to have gone a little down hill.

1 out of 5 stars There's No Time To Change Your Mind..........2007-01-16

The 1st 2 flicks have come on gone...World at War gets LEFT BEHIND(pun intended). I hoped I'd never see the day when I'd have to give an attempted prophecy movie thumbs down, but here we have it. To keep it short and sweet, many of the same characters are present from the 1st 2 films(which were true to the book), however, this poses a great disappointment for fans expecting to see an adaptation of book 3, as Cloud 10 veers away from the continuum of the book series. It's a story within itself and the story seems to be thrown together. Definately not a keeper...stick to the first 2 and then add The Moment After and SIX:The Mark Unleashed to your collection instead.

After a government-spawned "superflu" wipes out more than 90 percent of the earth's population, the devastated survivors must decide whether to support or resist the advances of a mysterious stranger from way down South (heh-heh) who wishes to claim this new world order for himself. Although the six-hour length makes it nigh-impossible to digest in one sitting, this well-paced adaptation of Stephen King's apocalyptic magnum opus ranks among the best adaptations of the author's work, with strong performances from Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, and especially Jamey Sheridan as a good-old-boy version of Old Scratch. The opening scene, set to the strains of Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper," is one of the most chilling things ever shot for television. Director Mick Garris is no stranger to King's world, having also helmed Sleepwalkers, the recent television remake of The Shining, and the upcoming Desperation. --Andrew Wright

3 out of 5 stars A bit more true-to-the-book than many other King movies, but ............2007-06-12

It's been too many years since I've read the book, but I recognize plot deviations when I see them. At least this movie didn't veer as far away as Jurassic Park did from *its* book ... or as far away as *other* King movies did from *their* books!

No, really. This movie overall was pretty well done. I, of course, would have chosen some different actors and actresses to play some of the characters, especially Frannie and Nadine, but the remainder of the cast sufficed. The acting was great. The human interaction was very realistic and enjoyable.

I gave this movie a "medium-ish" rating because it really *tried.* And trying is very important. It's just that I read the book first and *everyone* knows better to expect a movie to equal the book it's based upon, right?! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood Version Different??.......2007-06-11

I just rented this from Hollywood Video and it was on one 2 sided DVD.
Parts 1-2 side A and 3-4 on side B.
However something is missing here when you flip the disc!........
Side B (Pt 3 Betrayl) opens up with Stu crudely operating on someones body on the floor. (Who is this that dies?)
Ossie Davis(the judge)is also there(When and where did he appear before-storyline?)
Gary S.and Molly R.are already lovers and shes pregnant (When and where did they hookup?)Last thing I saw in Pt 2(Dreams)was Stu telling a jealous Harold he wouldnt cut in on his action.......
There is alot more but my question is are these scenes on the 2 disc set or just not explained? I believe the running time 366 min is the same.
Overall I found it to be one of the best TV mini-series ever.
Those that disliked the Christian elements should take heed. This was truly about the everyday struggles we all go through. The constant battle of good/evil,love/hatred,positive/negative,caring/uncaring,beauty/ugleness,day/night,death/birth and yes God and Satan! It was a story of struggles and having faith that good will over come evil! Even Satans/Flaggs men knew it was wrong but where tempted with lies and promises.Trashman even asked for forgiveness in the end and brought the bomb to end it all.The hand of God was very symbolic, though a bit chessy effect.
If you got anything out of this beautiful epic remember this:
"THE GREATEST LIE THAT SATAN HAS GOTTEN US TO BELIEVE...IS THAT HE DOES NOT EXIST"...Scary stuff indeed: Where will you be a second after you die?
If you cant anwser that with 100% accuracy you need to take a STAND.......

4 out of 5 stars "We are dead, and this is hell" .......2007-06-08

I just recently read the Complete and Uncut edition of "The Stand", and I thought I might take a look at the 1994 mini-series of it. Just like everything that's adapted from a book, it left certain things out and the effects were cheap...but CGI was new back then.
Following a deadly plague that kills most people, the survivors of the plague have a dream about a black woman named Abagail Freemantle ("Most people 'round here just call me Mother Abagail") calling people to her. The survivors also have dreams about "The Walkin Dude", a.k.a. Randall Flagg. Some people join with the 106-year-old Freemantle in Boulder, while others join up with Flagg in Las Vegas (the modern-day Sodom). Basically, it's about the struggle between good and evil with people caught in the crossfire.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the King Adaptations for T.V.......2007-03-14

I absolutley love this television miniseries. This is easily the best of all the television adaptations made out of King's work. As a horror film fan as well I also believe this to be the best horror 'film' of the early '90's. The early '90's saw a severe dry spell in terms of horror cinema, particularly in north America, but Mick Garris was able to construct a story that both terrified and moved audiences. The opening of the miniseries is without a doubt one of the most terrifying openings to a film ever.

One would think that Garris would have been severly restrained by having to make such a terrifying novel into a made for TV project. Garris is able to scare without relying on gore, although he does not back away from showing many scary images that deserve alot of respect for balancing image with the power of King's original story.

The film differs from the novel, obviously it must due to the fact the miniseries was to air on television and be reduced to six hours from a novel that was over 1200 pgs. 'The Stand' is easily my favourite King novel ever; I think King tapped into a deep dark need for anyone who lived the last half of the 20th century preparing for the end of the world to see how the end would of the world would might occur. King and Garris deliver in this terrifying plague/isolation epic. Everyone who loves King or horror films MUST see this one.

4 out of 5 stars Close to the book.......2007-03-12

For most part this movie is close to the heart of the book. Stephen King had a vision, we read and now you can watch a good representation of this when you buy the movie.

The second--and most horrifying--of the five Planet of the Apes movies, this film goes where few end-of-the-world movies ever dare tread. It's the far future. The mass of humanity has descended into speechless savagery, kept as captive animals by the talking apes who have inherited the world. Two astronauts from our time have landed here, retracing the path of their lost comrade, Captain Taylor (Charlton Heston). Unfortunately, they've landed in the middle of a grim situation. Warlike gorillas are preparing to eliminate the last shards of shattered human civilization, a degenerate, subterranean cult worshipping the greatest of all human achievements--the cobalt bomb. As well as rescuing Taylor, the two men have to stop the gorillas from wiping out humanity ... and stop humanity from fulfilling their self-appointed, self-destructive destiny. This is both thrill-a-minute science fiction and a surprisingly deep reflection on the human condition. Plus, it's got lots of guys in really keen ape suits. --Grant Balfour

Description

In the acclaimed sequel to Planet of the Apes, another astronaut (James Franciscus) crashes through the time barrier searching for the missing Taylor (Charlton Heston). The daring rescue leads to a subterranean city where mutant humans, who practice mind control, worship a weapon capable of destroying the entire planet. Both an action-oriented science-fiction adventure and a wry commentary on today's world, it's imaginative entertainment for fantasy buffs of all ages.

3 out of 5 stars Beneath the Planet of the apes .......2007-05-14

Good movie. I have all the movie from the planet of the apes and this one is one of the best from the set.

4 out of 5 stars Bizarre, this one........2006-08-25

You've got to hand it to these guys -- Beneath Planet of the Apes is a unrelentingly bleak bloodbath of a movie, one that not only features bizarre races of evolved earthlings in a battle royale -- but creates a haunting atmosphere that many a subsequent film would be proud to pull off. It's a lot of fun and a lot better than I would have thought given its endless re-runs on KPTV 12. As early-70s sociological sci-fi it's tops.

4 out of 5 stars "It's Doooooooooomsday!!!".......2006-05-15

After the spellbinding revelation of the original Planet of the Apes, the sequel (and subsequent sequels in the landmark series) seemed critically doomed to suffer from substandard mediocrity in the wake of its apocalyptic aftermath, yet Beneath the Planet of the Apes endures as one of the most reverent science fiction films among faithful fans of the series. A seriously flawed, yet brilliantly misunderstood masterpiece that remains as an important testament to behold. What could not be topped by Planet of the Apes' unsurpassable climax, could only be subverted by going beneath it... literally.

After Charlton Heston compromised with producers to only briefly reprise his role as Taylor in the sequel, James Franciscus takes the lead as Astronaut Brent. While Franciscus gives a very strong and worthwhile performance, his character still suffers at the expense of being a poor-man's Taylor. The first half of the film reiterates a lot of the exposition of the first film to bring Brent's character up to speed as he travels with the beautiful Linda Harrison as the mute slave Nova into the Forbidden Zone to find Taylor who mysteriously vanished into a mirage at the beginning of the film. As Brent and Nova begin their descent beneath the subterranean caverns of a post-apocalyptic city, the film takes a much darker and cerebral turn that is both disturbingly bizarre and brutally nihilistic. Brent, while under the telepathic mind-control of the under-dwelling society of mutated humans, shockingly tries to kill innocent Nova... twice. The malevolent Mutants reveal themselves to be a cult of hideously deformed worshippers of an atomic bomb who give praise to its awesome destructive power at an eerie mass in their tabernacle as they prepare for the inevitable confrontation against the surface-dwelling Simians who have ruled over the planet ever since it was ravaged by the inferno of nuclear holocaust two millenia prior and the final battle for control of the Planet of the Apes will be determined by its prophetic Earth-shattering outcome.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes detonates with a shockwave of suspense that reached its apotheosis at the end of the first film and radiates unstoppably towards an inexorable conclusion at the end of the second. A brilliantly twisted and hauntingly cerebral sequel which may have proven itself to have been too intense and intellectual for its G-rated audience who were simply engrossed by the film's adventurous fantasy and captivated by the ape-like wonder of its characters. It would be almost impossible today for a major studio to gamble on making what was considered to be a franchise-killing installment because of its powerfully subversive imagery and socio-political narrative which ironically gives Beneath its characteristically unique dynamic not only as a worthy and important follow-up to its classic predescessor, but a relevant and enduring testament of historic science fiction cinema.

4 out of 5 stars Top Movie.......2006-05-06

The first part of the movie starts out with a spaceship wreck(cool how it's sprawled across the landscape like that) and a horrifing trip through ape city which many people think makes it a pail imitation of the original, but that is not the main part of the movie. After getting chased by the apes, Astronaut Bret(James Fransiscus) and Nova(Linda Harrrison) end up in an underground city and this is where the plot thickens and gets interesting. Heston makes a brief appearence and takes the show to a dramatic end. The ending is a part i didnt like where they all died...seemed a bit silly realy.Especially how Taylor had managed to survive through so much.I hope i didnt spoil the ending for anyone but i thought it sucked.
Being that said it still is quite a good movie, and exciting.

Description

London 1893 is home to a killer with a macabre nickname... and also to a visionary genius who would write "The Time Machine." But what if H.G. Wells' invention wasn't fiction? And what if Jack the Ripper escaped capture fleeing his own time to take refuge in ours - with Wells himself in pursuit?

4 out of 5 stars Oedipus Wrecks, or the Perks of Asking Romy to Dance.......2007-04-19

Of all the bad ideas from the seventies getting cheeky revivals, why doesn't someone bother to givve a neat story like this one a decent remake? Malcolm McDowell plays Jack the Ripper, who steals H.G. Wells' time machine in order to escape the police. The machine returns sans Jack, and Wells travels into the future to capture him. He also manages to meet a nice girl who may want to settle down with him. Instead he opts to count his Ripper reward money in the Time Machine, leaving it running with the garage door closed while listening to Morrissey's cover of "A Hard Day's Night." Thumbs up, to infinity!

This film was directed by Brian DePalma.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past.......2007-01-28

Wow! What a great film! I remembered seeing it when I was very young. The movie was way ahead of it's time (no pun intended). The story was very original and the soundtrack, composed by the legendary Miklos Rosza, gives the film a classic feel. Although it may seem cheap by today's special effects standards, this film really delivers! Very enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Traveling in Time.......2007-01-12

What a GREAT movie! A new twist on the old classic! I'll be watching this one again & again!!

5 out of 5 stars Time After Time.......2007-01-04

This hard to find DVD is a great thriller. It combines time travel with Jack the Ripper and has clever dialogue and plenty of action The cast is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars An Outrageously Implausible Tale Done To Perfection Marks "Time After Time" A Personal Favorite.......2006-12-07

It has been a while since I've reviewed something on my lifelong favorite's list. So I've chosen "Time After Time" because it isn't very well known by younger audiences nor is it necessarily considered a "classic."
However, I instantly fell in love with this movie over 25 years ago--and I still consider it a rip-roaring good time!

Starting out with the most bizarre plot ever, "Time After Time" will keep you enthralled. It is a glorious popcorn flick--fast, light, fun, and exciting in equal measures. Set in 1893, we meet H. G. Wells (Malcolm MacDowell) who is unknowingly friends with Jack The Ripper (David Warner). MacDowell has constructed a time machine which Warner misappropriates as he is fleeing the authorities. He travels to modern day San Francisco where he continues his murderous ways. MacDowell follows him, he must stop Jack The Ripper! He meets up with a local woman, Mary Steenburgen, who helps him adjusts and ultimately gets caught up in his unlikely story.

"Time After Time" succeeds in several different genres concurrently. This is a credible sci-fi pic, a sweet romance, a fish out of water comedy, as well as a decent serial killer thriller. I think that's what I love and respect about this film, it's out there. There is no way that this picture should work, it should be terrible. And yet, inexplicably, Nicholas Meyer has crafted an intricate and audacious work. Even if I didn't love this movie, I would respect its ambition and scope. But love it I do, this is one of the most wildly entertaining pictures you could hope to see. Some people might be tempted to dismiss this work as dated or even slight--and yes, you do have to accept that this is a product of the 70's. There are references to "free love" and other concepts of the era, but at the same time--the film is incredibly prescient about violence in the modern age. Every time Warner describes how he was meant to exist in this future, where killings and debauchery are commonplace, I understand a real truth in his sentiment.

The performances are cracking good. MacDowell is the unlikeliest hero and a refreshing romantic lead. Warner has NEVER NEVER been better. If you are even a passing fan of his, you must see this picture. And Mary Steenburgen is a delight--she doesn't do enough these days! Maybe this isn't highbrow entertainment, but it is dazzling fun. Recommended to all without even the slightest hesitation. KGHarris, 12/06.

Oh well.

4 out of 5 stars not volcano but decent.......2007-05-07
