You are now entering Interzone, William S. Burroughs's phantasmagorical land of junk, paranoia, and crawly things. Best travel advice: "Exterminate all rational thought." In David Cronenberg's superbly shot, unnerving warp on the Burroughs novel, the novelist himself becomes a main character (played in an implacable monotone by Peter Weller), with elements from Burroughs' life--including the shooting of his wife during a "William Tell" game, and bohemian friends Kerouac and Ginsberg--added to frame the book's wild visions. This is, ironically, a somewhat rational approach to an unfilmable book (and it makes a hair-curling double bill with Barton Fink, another look at writerly madness, with both films sharing Judy Davis). Cronenberg is a natural for oozing mugwumps and typewriters that turn into giant bugs, of course. But in the end, this is really his own vision of the artistic process, rather than Burroughs's hallucinatory descent into hell. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:
This movie is a Kafka high, you feel like a bug..............2007-04-03
My favourite movie of all time, Naked lunch is just pure genius. It is a Burroughs inspired spiral fun ride deep into the madness of addiction and literary genius.
I loved Peter Weller's portrayal of Bill, Yes he is wooden, but so was William Burroughs in real life!
The acting is great and I say Naked Lunch is David Cronenburgs best movie ever.
My only gripe is that this film was too short! I wish that a sequel could be made with peter weller.
I never get sick of watching this film and the extras were also great.
With classic Burroughs dialoge like, "Your not the first person to develope a bug powder problem", "Think its about time to share my last taste of the true black meat, the flesh of the giant brazillian aquatic centipede" and "say bill, do you think you could rub some of this powder on my lips?" and "I think our metabolisms are very different, Who's, yours or Kafka's?" and many more memorable qoates too many to mention.
Classic Burroughs stories such as the talking A-hole and Bobo's unfortunate end, are just some of the many reasons why I love this film.
The imagination, talking bugs/typwriters are all inspired madness that makes for a great movie.
The extras are great and well worth having.
I can/and do watch this film over and over and see things I missed before.
I also love that David Cronenburg made reference to Naked Lunch ala Bug Powder Problem in his movie "Existenz" when it is mentioned that a character had a "Bio Port Problem".
If you love 'literary' inspired fantasy and great imaginative movies with great acting, Naked Lunch is a must.
It is a classic.

Although I paid extra for shipping, this item took 2 weeks to arrive. I am very unhappy with Amazon's service. This has not been my experience with Amazon in the past. What has changed?
cronenberg meets burroughs - a successful meeting.......2007-02-03
If you are expecting a straight adaptation of the novel 'Naked lunch' you've come to the wrong place.. If you are looking for two styles converging into a twisted bizarre sci-fi arthouse extravaganza - step right up.. David Cronenberg (the fly, scanners, eXistenZ, etc.) has a unique attatchment to surreal sci-fi investigations of the nature of reality and transformation (I think I am miserably failing to describe his cinema) - Burroughs also has a style which, shall we say, twists the bounds of reality -sometimes literally in his drug induced descriptions in 'Naked Lunch'.. but mostly in his radical prose style (something between james joyce and aldous huxley but with an extra ingredient of the bizzare).. somehow this meeting of two artists works out and creates this frightening alternate noir-like alter-universe called interzone.. Highlights of the movie include Cronenberg's strange puppetry which bring to life Burroughs creatures of his own unconcious mind.. This is a beautiful movie to look at - and one that plays like a fever-dream.. My only dissapointment was that I had just read the book - and was still so in awe of Burroughs writing - that I had trouble excepting an interpretation.. But Cronenberg's artistry actually enhances more than it detracts..
COOL! and as I was saying to "praise the goddess"-.......2007-01-18
To start out,I won't even comment on your inability,(or rigid unwillingness as I can't conceive of anyone thick enough NOT to have the ability,)to grasp the concept of synergy,i.e. Buckminster Fuller,i.e. the sum of the whole being greater than,or capable of transforming the definition of the seperate parts,BUT,I do think your bent of mind has you obscured by clouds of narrow perception. Do you even know the meaning of the word obtuse? I don't think so. This film is extremely existential and anthropomorphic but is quite the reverse of obtuse. So, at the risk of being truly obtuse, look the word up in the Dictionary. Then try using it in the proper context. But then,if you weren't so obtuse you would already know that. But I digress,on to the review:
This film,(while admittedly being a bit afield of the novel,as well as extremely toned down from the sexual angle),IS fairly brilliant and the scene where the 'Agent' is having a conversation with another 'Agent' while walking down the street, mouthing the conversation while we hear each person's private thoughts, while not original in concept,is quite original in style.(Woody Allen did the same thing as you recall in 'Annie Hall' but with subtitles. Using the actual 'thought dialogue' in voices as Cronenberg did raised the device from kitchiness to surreallism. COOL!
I can think of TWO things wrong with that title..........2006-11-22
Quoth Nelson from the Simpsons... And that is the reaction a lot of people get to Burroughs.
I like "My Last Time" as another quote...
The movie is disturbingly beautiful. I'm straight yet I feel I'd snuggle with a MugWomp eagerly. And BioPunk (think HR Giger vs William Gibson) has always appealed to me.
See it, its quite a trip.
