Goofy but fun.......2007-05-21

I was skeptical of this show because of the puppets, but I gave it a try because of all the good things I'd heard about it. And when you first see the alien puppets, its hard not to laugh. But the show is a load of campy fun and the character development is deep and fascinating. The show is actually quite sexual and there is a lot of action and in fact my one complaint is that there's too much action. The crew seems to bounce from one life threatening event to another and we rarely see how they are making any money or buying food/fuel. Firefly was much better in this regard where the crew was constantly looking for work. I highly recommend this series to anyone remotely interested in Sci-Fi or even plain old romance.

I adore this show and strongly suggest buying the Starburst Editions as opposed to dropping about $200 on the full seasons. The Starburst Edition way is far more cost effective. Especially for poor college students like myself.

Farscape is awesome!.......2007-04-02

I started watching Farscape in Season 3. I watched all episodes and reruns I could get my hands on. I think they were INSANE to drop it from television.

I eventually bought the entire collection at once.

The only reason I gave this a 4 out of 5 stars, is because of the quality of the DVD. The inner clips of the box break very easily. The DVD always defaults back to subtitles between episodes, which is really annoying.

Even with the problems of the DVD, I love this set.

I started watching Farscape after my boyfriend and I finished watching all the Stargate SG-1 DVDs. He bought me this season over the holidays, and when I first watched it I was really put off. It's much different than anything else I've ever seen on TV. I didn't like all the puppets and people in crazy suits and makeup at first, but once I got a few more episodes in I really LOVED it. I just ordered the second season, and I'm totally hooked. For all new buyers, don't get put off from watching the rest of Farscape if you don't like the first 2 episodes, I didn't either and look at me now!

Groundbreaking Series.......2007-03-09

I am continually amazed at the inventiveness and distinctive character of Farscape. Notably, Farscape is a series in which puppets have leading roles (giving Farscape a greater breadth and depth of alien behaviors and appearances than other sci-fi series like Star Trek) and where the characters' personal storylines are given time to develop and flourish. Farscape is also distinctive through its solid casting, well-written scripts, and unusual additions to the sci-fi TV pantheon: a living ship bonded with a species that serves as guide and translator, hybrid species carrying behaviors and components of both their respective parents, and romances that flourish among the members of altogether different races.

The plot is fast paced, sometimes requiring the viewer to make some jumps in time and logic to catch up with a new episode's plotline. Despite this, nearly every episode of Farscape is enjoyable on a visual level with or without explanation of prior plotlines. Best of all, the Starburst series is affordable, and despite the product description, contains four single-sided DVDs, all with highly entertaining special features. Long live Farscape!

It's gets a 4 ONLY because the case it comes in is so bad, otherwise it's a 5.
You already know Farscape if you have made it to season 4, it's great and original. Albeit Season 4 is the weakest season of them all, so I'm going to tell you about the product and not the show.
ADV as many know totally screwed up the first 6 releases of Season 1 and 2 with there double sided problematic disc. So they fixed it with Season 3 and Season 4, but could ADV have picked a worst case design? I have yet to get a case were the tabs that hold the disc in weren't broken on at least one of the disc if not more. Everyone (case) a received came with loose disc and broken tabs, everyone! The overlapping disc make it difficult to get them in and out and while they seem to fall off the tab holders fairly easily they at the same time seem really hard to get out once they are secured by the tabs. I thought more than once I was going to break a disc getting them out.
Farscape is a 5 without doubt, season 4 extras are a little less but that's not a big deal to me. I just wish ADV the company that released the Starburst edition had a little quality control. Granted the Starbust is for the most part, affordable and packed with extras, but that doesn't give you a pass on quality. As I understand it, as of this writing Sony has aquired the rights to Farscape and ADV will not be releasing anymore sets. Perhaps Sony will re-release them in a quality set that is problem free.

Like it.......2007-01-28

The story has improved dramatically since the start. The special effects are reasonable. The acting is good. The characters, I think you will find need more work to make them look visually nicer. Overall the problem is the show it looks like it is on a small budget. Not that this makes a film not worth watching. Having said that I wish the producers had hired some science adviser's to check the science out of the stories as much of it is unplausible science. This would have costed them little.

Overall I would say the series is well worth watching although I do think it is not as good as some similar shows like B5 or firefly. Still after you have seen them. This is worth a look.

Fantastic show.......2007-01-04

In this exceptional show (I'm a tv junkie, and this is my favorite show by far), these episodes hold their own. The first episode goes in a totally different direction (new visuals, characters, ship, themes) and it works perfectly. The main character is losing his mind a little. These show goes where none have gone before.

Can't get enough Farscape.......2006-08-20

I have to say...I expected a little more in the extras department but the sound quality is far better than the original box set as it has been for all the Starburst additions. I also like that they are sticking with the single sided disks rather than those annoying double sided disks. If you are a true Farscape fan you will want this in your collection.

Farscape is tied with Red Dwarf and the Stargates as one of my favorite shows of all time. I love the starburst editions for their price and the considerably smaller shelf space compared to the previous release of Farscape on DVD. My one complaint is the cases are [...]. Most of the cases for the starburst collection have 1-3 disc hubs broken. I forget where but I eventually found the case manufacturer and was able to order repacements. The replacements were the exact size but the disc hubs had been greatly improved.

The Farscape episodes are excellent and deserve 5 stars.
The case however is still problematic. The Single sided disks are an improvement, but the little pieces of plastic that holds the DVDs break in transit and 2 DVDs ended rattling around in the case. Same problem with other Season 3 cases. Which is why in summary the collection only gets 4 stars.

I was horrified when Amazon sent me Farscape Starburst Season 3, Collection 1 in the 1 sided 4 disk DVD format. The only reason that I decided to collect Farscape is that the double sided was so cool and compact allowing it to fit into my DVD library. Now there will be a transition in the middle of the collection. I will not buy anymore Farscape collections unless they go back and redo them to the original 2 sided disk format. Very very sad.

The starburst edition has all the extras, of course. But previous starburst editions came on double-sided dvds that I had troubles with, and others did as well. But now you get four single-sided dvds that I haven't had any problems with so far. It's my favorite tv series, I've watched it several times. I guess the first season or so is a little hoky at times (which I kinda like actually). But the first and second lay a lot of groundwork for the characters that make watching the third and fourth a better experience.

Farscape - Great storytelling, Impressive Graphics...It doesn't get any better.......2006-09-01

When I first saw Fascape when it premiered in 1999, I immediately fell in love with the show. It's genuinely original storyline, muppet effects supplied by the Henson Co., and the depth of characters as the show progressed only heightened my affection for this, in my opinion, short lived show. For anyone that is wondering about this show, primarily if they are thinking about starting to collect this very affordable and well done DVD collections, they should know that this show had enough of a fan base to practically unseat a CEO of a company.

From what I have read and heard, when a new female CEO was named for the Sci-fi Channel in 2003/2004, the first thing she did was to cancel Farscape. She thought the show cost too much and that the story was too linear based, meaning that people who had never seen an episode would not be able to understand it because they hadn't see the preceding storylines that progressed the show. Anyways, this was a bad idea. Between 2 and 3 million people boycotted the channel because they cancelled their favorite show. On top of that, it was the Sci Fi channels top rated and most popular television show at the time. Needless to say, the board of executives threatened to releave her of her position with a vote of no confidence, so she allowed the creators and actors to come back and finish the show with a 4 hour miniseries. The reason I mention this is because the show is just that damn good, and if it had the fan base to change a company, then I would have to say that alone is proof of how great this show is and always will be.

I also used to work for a Suncoast store, which is primarily retail priced with the occasional sale in the store. The original retail price for the season box sets of Farscape retailed at $149.99 a piece. Outrageously priced, even for a good show. However, I still sold many, many copies of the Farscape box sets while I worked there, once again showing the show is just that damn good that people would spend that much hard earned money. These Starburst collections are just what the doctor ordered for people in the middle class like myself. You get all the episodes of whatever season you would like in 3 separate box sets that combined still only cost half of the full season box sets price. The Starburst collections also have great quality episodes, lots of documentary info, and cool facts surrounding the creation of the show.

If you like Farscape then I recommend buying these right now. If you have never seen it then buy the first starburst box just to see what you think and it will only cost you $20.00.

Really The Best Edition .......2006-05-06

Farscape is one of the best sifi shows period. I wish they got more publicity. I heard of it and started watching it at the end of its last season. If you like this show, and are thinking that maybe you want to buy some episodes, Only get the Starburst Edition. It has all the extras and gives you about seven shows per set at about $20US. The boxed season sets are about twice that price, and are missing some of the cool extras from the Starburst Edition. There is also another edition out, but it has nothing for extras and is even more pricey per episode then the Boxed set. Enjoy the maddness, with Jim Henson's best creatures since Starwars.

In its fourth season, Farscape is as much dramatic and romantic fun as it's ever been and it's even more stylish than ever before. A pity, then, that this season is also the show's last, following its abrupt cancellation by the Sci-Fi Channel. If at times the tone seems a little lighter here than in its gloriously doom-laden predecessor, that is because its story arc is the first half of what was intended to cover two seasons and some of the material is clearly here for the long run. It is, for example, probably no coincidence that the priests' chant in "What Was Lost" has been part of the show's signature tune from the beginning.

There are five episodes here. In "Crichton Kicks," Crichton has been a castaway for months on a senile Leviathan which is waiting its time to die. He has worked out wormhole technology, trained an orchestra of DRDs to sing the 1812 Overture, and is generally content, until his worldly resignation is shattered by the arrival of the beautiful, bossy, and untrustworthy Sikozu, a bunch of aggressive butchers and a somewhat battered Chiana and Rygel. "What Was Lost, Part 1: Sacrifice" takes them to an archaeological dig where they join Jool, D'Argo and the mysterious, annoying old woman Noranti and start to uncover lost secrets that change everything. In "What Was Lost, Part 2: Resurrection" Crichton, drugged into bed by the seductive evil Peacekeeper Grayza, regains his self-respect by helping save yet another world. "Lava's a Many-Splendored Thing" is a puzzle episode: how to rescue an amber-encased Rygel from the bottom of a pool of lava without getting crisped or shot by renegades and how to use D'Argo's ship to rescue him when it is keyed to his DNA. Finally, "Promises" takes everyone back to Moya to find a dying Aeryn Sun and a Scorpius she has promised to protect--the issue here is how to outwit both a Peacekeeper torpedo and an extortionist with a big ship and a taste for hiding behind holograms. --Roz Kaveney

Great episodes, but wait for Starburst Edition.......2006-05-25

If you haven't gotten this collection yet then please wait. They will be making a Starburst Edition DVD collection very soon. What's that? It's essentially a bigger and better collection of Farscape Episodes. Instead of getting four episodes you get seven. Intead of paying $35 retail you pay $20. You get all the cool extras that are on this collection along with even more cool extras.

Look for the Starburst Edition for season four. If it's anything like the previous seasons they will release three volumes (as opposed to the five with this collection). See? Another added bonus... more shelf space.

Beginning the final season of "Farscape".......2004-07-16

This is the start of the fourth and final season of "Farscape," and with this first five episodes Moya's crew reassembles and John Crichton gets some good news and bad news by the end of this 2-DVD set. As always you will find some fan friendly extras along with the episodes:

Episode 401, "Crichton Kicks" (Written by David Kemper, Aired June 7, 2002) starts off the season back in the Uncharted Territories with a bearded Crichton reunited with Chiana and Rygel aboard the decaying Leviathan Elack. A group of Grudek mercenaries intent on harvesting the Leviathan's rare neural tissue mercenaries show up and have to be stopped. Moya's crew is not back together by the end of this one, but at least Crichton shakes off the cobwebs and starts getting acclimated to the idea that Aeryn is out there somewhere carrying his baby...or is she?

Episode 402, "What Was Lost, Part 1: Sacrifice" (Written by Justin Monjo, Aired June 14, 2002) has more of Moya's crew showing up on a planet where Interion scientists are conducting an archeological dig. Then Commandant Grayza shows up and uses a sensual spell to try and get to Crichton's secrets and the Old Woman, convinced Crichton will crack, figures killing him would be a good thing. Fortunately they put the second part on the same disc here as the story continues.

Episode 403, "What Was Lost, Part 2: Resurrection" (Written by Justin Monjo, Aired June 21, 2002) has the Farscape gang trying to stop the Peacekeepers on Arnessk from recovering an alien weapon of mass destruction while Crichton tries to resist Grayza's sensual assault. D'Argo and Jool have a plan, but you know how well those things work out. Fortunately, the dying Leviathan Elack makes for one heck of a trump card and it looks like maybe Crichton will not have Scorpius to kick around any longer (yeah, right, but Moya does lose a crewmember).

Episode 404, "Lava's a Many Splendored Thing" (Written by Michael Miller, Aired June 28, 2002) has the crew still searching for Moya but being forced to make an emergency landing on a desolate planet. There Tarkan freedom fighters capture Rygel inside a cavern filled with lava after Sparky's love for shiny objects gets him in a stick situation once again. Chiana and Sikozu become the new bickering couple for the series but manage to avoid coming to blows for the time being. This is a comic relief episode that, for many reasons, strikes me as a tongue in cheek homage to the original "Star Trek." But I am probably reading too much into it.

Episode 405, "Promises" (Written by Richard Manning, Aired July 12, 2002) starts off with good news and bad news. The good news is that Moya is finally reunied with her crew and Crichton gets to see Aeryn. The bad news is that she is in the company of Scorpius (you thought he was gone for good?) and in the throes of Heat Delirium. To prove his good intentions, Scorpius finally removes "Harvey," his neural clone, from Crichton's mind. Then a giant Lukythian Ship rockets up to Moya, preventing starburst, and its captain accuses Aeryn of being part of team of assassins who killed the Prime Lukythian. The Lukythians infected her with Heat Delirium and will provide an antidote in exchange for the names of those who ordered the hit. If this was not enough fun, Grayza has a prototype Peacekeeper missile for killing a Leviathan.

The Best Damed SiFi ever!!!.......2004-03-18

I Love Farscape.......2004-01-03

Why is it on a very rare occasion we are able to catch a series that doesn't completely suck, and just when you get used to television that isn't mind-numbingly dumb they take it away from you? Ahh, another disappointment. Farscape Rocks and this DVD rocks along with all their other DVD's. It's a shame the SciFi channel has sold out and replaced Farscape with crap like Scare Tactics. It's tragic. I love Farscape!

Farscape: Season 4 begins..........2004-01-02

Well, as this final season of "Farscape" is brought to DVD, a few changes come along with it. The most obvious is the widescreen presentation of the episodes, but the other noteworthy change is (unlike the show's previous gloom-and-doom season premieres) some much-needed laughs after several emotionally tough and dramatic episodes. Our hero john Crichton was left alone at the end of the previous season, but when we see him again, he has managed to find a dying Leviathan to call home and find time to study his knowledge of wormholes (while growing a Jim Morrison-esque mane to boot). But, things can be quiet in the world of "Farscape" for so long before circumstances drag him out of exile and into reunions with his old friends. But the biggest shock of all is the one person John Crichton distrusts more than anyone may need Crichton's help to survive. While the first five episodes in this set bring our band of misfits back together, it also sets up a tense atmosphere that plays out rather well throughout the season. Mind you, the REALLY GOOD stuff of season four isn't on DVD yet, but the epsiodes, including the two parter "What Was Lost" and the dramatic reunion of John and his love Aeryn in "Promises" manages to keep things interesting. All in all, a must-own for "Farscape" fans, and for those non-fans, well...

It's clear from the opening episodes of its third season that Farscape has developed into a grown-up show. There's a new self-confidence and maturity here that's entirely welcome after the often wildly erratic tone of the second season. The production design and high-quality effects remain true to the show's original quirky style, although both the look and the more adult-themed scripts have become progressively darker. It's also clear that anyone who has not followed Farscape extremely closely from the very first episode of Season One will be utterly baffled by the convoluted plotting and complex character interactions. This is not the best place to begin your interstellar journey.

All the principal actors know their characters inside and out by now, and delight in showing off their many weaknesses and flaws. Refreshingly, the crew of Moya are a squabbling, bickering, selfish bunch most of the time, who somehow and against expectations manage to pull together (just) at the crucial moment. The writing has matured, too, remaining as witty as ever but equally unafraid to push both genre and censorship boundaries as villains bloodily torture their victims (usually Crichton) and the main characters become more and more obsessed with their sex lives (or lack thereof). Farscape is a whole galaxy away from the clean, cozy world of Star Trek. With a number of key personnel changes on the horizon, these first four episodes are evidence that Farscape knows where it's going even as it delights in keeping the audience guessing. The dead and the living trade places as Season 3 starts.......2003-10-30

At the end of the second season of "Farscape" John Crichton (Ben Browder) was on an operating table with the top of his skull off as Scorpius (Wayne Pygram) has interrupted the surgery to remove the neural chip from his brain and Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) was killed when she was trapped in her ejector chair that crashed into the freezing water on the planet below. Little did we know that the themes of death and seaparation were going to be so powerfully strong during the third season, the first four episodes of which are to be found on these two DVDs:

Episode 301, "Season of Death" (Written by Richard Manning, Aired March 16, 2001) has the good news that Scorpius' neural chip has finally been removed from Chrichton outweighed by the fact he can not speak, a "clone" of the personality of Scorpius remains in his mind, and Aeryn is dead awaiting a Peacekeeper's funeral. Although Moya's crew makes a series of touching farewells to Officer Sun, Zhaan (Virginia Hey) has an idea. On the one hand bringing back the leading lady of the series from the dead was a bit too easy, but on the other it is clear in retrospect that we are being set up for a series of much more permanent demises by the end of the season (Four Wormholes).

Episode 302, "Suns and Lovers" (Written by Justin Monjo, Aired March 23, 2001), as the title indicates, is a pun on the infamous D.H. Lawrence novel and on target because the lovers end up being Chiana (Gigi Edgley) and Jothee, son of D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe). The main plot has to do with Moya's crew heading to a Commerce Station to spend their spoils, but a violent storm of unnatural origin hits the station. This episode strikes me as more clearing of the decks in terms of stamping out D'Argo's brief period of happiness, which does not strike me as being particularly necessary, although Chiana's motivations for the betrayal are a nice character touch (3 Wormholes).

Episode 303, "Self Inflicted Wounds, Part 1: Could'a, Would'a, Should'a" (Written by David Kemper, Aired March 30, 2001) sets up a new problem for the crew when an alien vessel collides with Moya and the two ships sort of merge with each other. However, the more important concern is for Zhaan: it seems that bringing back Aeryn from the dead by performing Unity is costing the priestess her own life. Her only hope is to buried in special soil, which means finding the right sort of planet. Meanwhile, Crichton's hopes are raised by the "appearance" of the Three Stooges (4 Wormholes).

Episode 304, "Self Inflicted Wounds, Part 2: Wait for the Wheel" (Written by David Kemper, Aired April 6, 2001), picks up with Zhaan dying, Moya dying, and Pilot in a coma. Breaking away from the wormhole has not solved all of their problems. This becomes a pivotal episode in the "Farscape" series, which no doubt caught many viewers by surprise since it was only the fourth episode of the season and we have a major shake up in the cast of the series. I have to admit, I did not think this was a permanent event until I was about halfway through the third season. A memorable episode in a season that will be providing even bigger changes (5 wormholes).

These early episodes from Season 3 are transitional stories that resolve or reset many of the elements from the previous season. But they also set the stage for the two dominant themes of this third season, both of which will be brought home with some of the show's most powerful episodes.

What can you say. It's Farscape.......2003-05-10

The beginning of the third season of Farscape produced some of the best episodes of the series. To me, this is one of the most entertaining and well made science fiction series ever produced. It was extremely disappointing to find that it was cancelled. However, the DVD collections of all the seasons is something that every fan will want. Admittedly, some episodes are more interesting than others, but each tells a small part of the Farscape saga and is well worth watching. The interpersonal relationships continue to develop and we see some of the strangest aliens ever seen on a tv screen. Let's hope that someone decides to bring this series back with all the characters and story lines intact.

With season 3 we witness the collison of the bulk of the conflicts at the end of two: Crichton fights and wins a Pyretic victory over "Harvey" the neural clone of Scorpi flitting about in his head; Someone close to the crew dies and there are some unexpected departures.

I'd have to agree that Season of Death is one of the show's strongest opening episodes. It manages to build on the established story arcs of both seasons 1 and 2. The writing became more consistent as the character's backstories finally stablized. That also gave the actor's considerably more confidence in their roles as well. The visuals are, as always stunning.

The arrival on the production staff of a number of Next Generation and DS9 vets (including Richard Manning and Naren Shanker) also brought considerable depth and experience to the production side. While staff writers like Andrew Prowse have done a terrific job with the series, the Next Gen folks provided a different perspective that allowed the conflicts and emotional attachments of the characters additional depth.

The DVD's have been improving since the season one batch. Season two still had a number of great extras and the main issue--the DVD menu--has been improved somewhat as well. My only complaint is the focus on a bit too many bottle shows during season three. I realize it's a way to save money and budget out for the bigger episodes but, well, Moya's confined space makes it a bit difficult to continue to come up with strong story ideas. Still, to their credit, the Farscape production crew, staff and actors manage to pull it off.

I was unsure if I wanted to spend money to purchase the Farscape Season 1 (Starburst editions)when many of the reviews claimed to have problems viewing the disks...or that the disks were of poor quality. I haven't had ANY problems with my disks. I'm glad I took the chance. My family and I LOVE Farscape and are very happy with our purchase!!

8-episodes, 4-Discs, audio commentaries, lot's of extras. I think I'm one of the few people who enjoyed the episode "Jeremiah Crichton", so the audio-commentary on it was great!! The narrators included the producers w/ Claudia Black and Ben Browder. I'm looking forward to buying the next "Starburst Edition-Collections." Stay away from the previous dvd offerings, "Starburst" is the way to go!!!

Farscape is an excellent series - it's no surprise that Season 1, Collection 2 is full of drama, action, inuendo, and fun. The Starburst Edition offers Farscape fans an affordable way to revisit their favorite episodes without spending a fortune.

Now on Single Sided disks.......2006-07-22

After many complaints, ADV has chosen to re-release all of Starburst Seasons 1 and 2 on SINGLE SIDED disks. The positive effects that come from this change are many:

1. DVD quality is No Longer low. Disks play well, no glitches, no freezes, etc.

2. The titles of the episodes are marked clearly on each disk. No need to squint and rotate the DVD as you try to read some tiny font.

3. No need to flip the disk over when you want to watch other episodes. This is mostly beneficial to the people who own DVD players that can hold multiple disks at once.

4. Disk artwork :-D

There are then, certain faults that result from the change as well, all dealing with packaging quality:

--> Disks are stored in such a way that 2 are attached to each side of the DVD case. This means that in order to get to the disk at the bottom, you first have to remove the one at the top. If this isn't annoying enough, it turns out that all of the DVD buttons that hold the top disks don't work very well. Pushing the button doesn't pop the disks out as there are other plastic pieces that hold it in place. You have to push those with your fingers in order to get a disk out, and that can get really painful. If you're not careful, you might very well break a DVD in half.

My personal solution was to go and get my own DVD cases that worked properly. Having to find multi-disk cases with identical dimensions as that of the ADV ones shouldn't be that difficult. Also try to find ones that have clippings for literature, if you want to keep one in your DVD case. This Starburst release comes with a separate page listing disk content/episode synopsis, but there's no where to adequately store it.

Having that said, the content of the Starburst itself is excellent. As you know, all of the extra features from the original releases, plus many new ones (mainly the commentaries) are included. Subtitles have finally become available, and some disks don't have those annoying ADV commercials that blighted each of the original Farscape releases.

As for the quality of the show itself, that's something I won't discuss. If you haven't made up your mind about whether you like/dislike the series, then you've probably read enough reviews to get an idea of what most audience think about Farscape. I personally feel that Starburst Collection 1.3 contains the best lot of the episodes in the first Season.

DVD Quality VERY LOW - Series and Extras Excellent!.......2005-11-09

This reveiw is more about the quality issues with the disc more so than the content of the disc. For the record ADV has added a lot of extras that is not anywhere else. Albeit many are repeated multible times on different disc of this STARBURST series release that could have been better used reducing the compression ratio. As for the quality issues, these are recorded on dual layer double sided disc and as of this writing I have had to send 3 of the 6 currently released back to be exchanged due to skipping, frame freeze, audio cracking etc. The disc were checked on 3 players and a computer and did the same on all of them. So the issue is with the quality or the lack thereof. I have contacted ADV about the quality issues and they have more the most part said ... 'Oh well.' The more pricey collection did not have these issues, but lacked many of the extras and you get what you pay for. Granted to be fair when the disc work, the video and audio quality is fine, but it is annoying to get to the middle of a show and the disc freezes up and up have to skip over 10 or more minutes to get it to play. ADV simply tried to squeeze to much into to small of a space. This collection really should have been put on 4 disc instead of 2. They did not include scene selection either, you can only choose which episode you want to see then fast forward through the tracks after that. As I said I love the show and it is a healthy 5 but this release's quality is a sickly zero.

A great set with the best episodes of Season One.......2005-10-17

Like many fans of FARSCAPE, I've only now started turning in my old recordings of the show for DVDs now that we are finally getting acceptably priced copies of the show. Although there have been other TV series that have appeared in overpriced editions-THE X-FILES springs to mind-FARSCAPE was the only one in its original edition that could be said to be prohibitively so. I'm not sure about other fans, but there was simply no way that I was able or willing to pay for a set that listed for well over a hundred dollars. One could make some complaints about the new Starburst edition-for instance, I'm still not clear on why they have to dribble these out two discs at a time, instead of releasing an entire season at once-but two things one cannot carp about: the cost and the number of extras. As to the former, I've been about to find each disc in the Starburst so far from various resellers listed on Amazon for no more than $16 apiece. As to the latter, each of the three sets making up each season is stuffed with a variety of special features. Some of the special features feel a bit like filler, but a number are substantive. In this set we get video profiles of Crais (Lani John Tupu, who also provides the voice for Pilot and therefore the only dual role performer in the series) and the two end-of-the-season newcomers, Chiana and Scorpius. The importance of the arrival of the last two can't be overemphasized, since after their debuts the show takes on the shape it holds pretty much until the end.

Although I love every season of FARSCAPE, the series completely matured, I believe, in this final third of the first season, with the addition of Chiana and Scorpius to the cast. Both of those characters changed the chemistry of the show dramatically and took it in entirely new directions. Chiana's arrival is somewhat disguised in "Durka Returns," as the prisoner of Nebaris and one of their most successful reclamation projects, Durka, whom they have reprogrammed to be nonviolent. Durka, we learned in a previous episode, was a torturer and notorious Sebacean who took especial delight in questioning Rygel. But it was not Durka but the feline, ultra sensual free spirit Chiana who would become a permanent member of the cast. Although the cast was superb from the beginning, Chiana brought a new dimension to the crew as the resident bad girl. It would be a long time in the series before Chiana would come to cease being primarily more concerned with herself than with the others, but she would end by becoming attached to the welfare of the whole more than to herself. No character on the series, not even former space Nazi Aeryn, would grow as much as Chiana. I'm sure the series would have been marvelously successful without the addition of Chiana, but it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun. Besides, while Virginia Hey's Zhaan was undoubtedly beautiful and sensual and Claudia Black's Aeryn was beautiful and sexy despite herself, Gigi Edgley's Chiana was always a pure, unadulterated sexpot. She always seemed to be on the verge of jumping the bones of anyone within jumping distance. She also brought a playful physicality that marked her off from the other characters.

Likewise, Scorpius brought a degree of genuine menace and creepiness that Crais never quite managed. In my opinion, Scorpius was the finest villain in the history of TV. Even the first time we see him, before he developed in a host of wonderful ways in the final three seasons, Scorpius was unforgettable. He simultaneously was part Frankenstein, part reptile, and part elegant gentleman. His costume looked both like a snakeskin and a tuxedo with tails. And while his face was haunting, he spoke with a soft, sophisticated voice that completely belied his appearance. The first time we see the cooling rods rotating into his skull we know for certain that this man is a monstrosity, yet charismatic and compelling despite that. Even had he not developed he would have been one of the medium's great villains, but what makes him so extraordinary is the way that the show's creators gave him so many new dimensions in the seasons to come, not least as they develop John's "Harvey" late in Season Two.

This set is graced with several superb episodes, including "A Human Reaction," in which John thinks he has returned to earth with his shipmates. It is an extremely important episode on several levels, not merely because it is compelling on its own, but because it represents the spot at which John is implanted with hidden knowledge about wormhole technology (which essentially provides the drive for the main structuring story arc from his appearance in Scorpius's Aurora Chair until the end of the miniseries following Season Four). We also receive further confirmation of John's feelings for Aeryn. The final two episodes are the first in what would prove to be a series of extraordinary season-ending finales that helped define FARSCAPE during its run. Three of the final four episodes have John going down to a Peacekeeper base to attempt to find a medical treatment for an injury that Aeryn has suffered and that will prove fatal if not dealt with. It is there that we find Scorpius for the first time, a restored Aeryn leading the others down to the base to rescue John, and finally the crew being dispersed as Scorpius attempts to recapture John. The final episode is one of the great images in all of FARSCAPE with John in his space suit and D'Argo holding hands against a brilliant orange planet as the season ends.

Oh, and in the other episode of the final four, we learn that Zhaan is a plant! Actually, the first alien in the history of Sci-fi was what was described as a giant carrot in THE THING FROM OUTER SPACE, which was ghost-directed by the great Howard Hawks.

FARSCAPE in its first season established that it was willing to take chances to a degree never before seen in television. Not every gamble paid off and not every episode was perfect. But when FARSCAPE succeeded, it succeeded spectacularly. By the end of the first season, it could lay claim to being one of the finest Sci-fi series in the history of television. By the end of its third season, it could with considerable justification lay claim to being the finest ever. As good as Season One was, Season Two would be much better, and then Season Three, one of the great seasons of any show in the history of the medium, would be even better than that.
