QUALITY CHEESE HERE!.......2007-05-03
"Wow! What a cool cheese fest! A cool monster and good story for sure!" This movie is much better than the budget allowed for this super cool Sci-Fi flick. Nice transfer to DVD too!
A Taut Little Sci-Fi Thriller.......2007-04-13
Don't be put off by the sensationalist title or the lurid case artwork--"The Crawling Eye" is actually a quite good, if minor, science fiction film.
The decade after the end of World War II produced a bumper crop of the finest science fiction films ever made, many of which remain classics to this day. "The Crawling Eye," released in 1958, certainly does not rank among the top ten of the decade, but it is nonetheless an interesting story told in a reasonably well-made film. The plot is tight, coherent and logically consistent, and the acting of the British and American cast is as good as the typical standards of the day. There are some moments of genuine suspense as scientists race against time to figure out how to fight an unseen murderous force that inhabits a strange radioactive cloud high in the Swiss Alps. The "crawling eye" creatures of the title, when they appear late in the film, are about as good as the special effects technology of the day could make them, complete with tentacles very obviously manipulated by wires suspended from the ceiling of the sound stage.
This DVD is advertised incorrectly as a "Widescreen European Edition"--it is actually full-frame format. It is "European" only in its title, "The Trollenberg Terror," as it was released in Europe, and the obligatory British Board of Film Censors "X" rating before the opening credits. The black-and-white transfer is crisp, sharp and contrasty, but overall the film is marred slightly by what seems to be more than the usual amount of dust, scratches, hairs and other defects. The only extras are a grand total of three count 'em three still photos and an extremely poor-quality trailer.
At this low price, "The Crawling Eye" is hard to pass up. You'll definitely get your money's worth if you have any interest at all in science fiction films of the '50's.
Chilling terror.......2007-01-17
In the style of 'you don't see the monster until it's too late', this is a very chilling setup. Adapted from 'The Trollenberg Terror', everything takes place on a lonely mountain far from help. The monsters are never seen until the end, only spoken of. You see the effects long before you see them.
Look for Forrest Tucker (of 'F Troop' fame) in the lead.
And for the Adults, look for a scene involving a couch and a woman bent over that, incredibly, escaped the notice of the censors. 'Nuff said.
Cheesy special effects don't detract from a pretty good "B" Sci-Fi movie.......2006-12-17
"The Crawling Eye" (aka, "The Trollenberg Terror") is a better-than-average low budget sci-fi entry from the late 1950's. As is the norm for many of the classic sci-fi movies of that era, radiation plays an important role in the plot.
In this film, aliens are drawn to the Earth (for some unknown reason) and move mysteriously up and down the Trollenberg Mountain by way of the aforementioned radioactive cloud. The acting led by TV veterans Forrest Tucker and Janet Munro is actually above the norm for a movie with this limited of a budget. The secondary actors are also a little better than expected. The plot moves along nicely and there are few "down" moments in the film.
The only major criticism that I have of the film is that the special effects used to create the aliens is suspect, even for a film in the 50s'.
The viewer is led to believe that the "eye creatures" (consisting of a giant eye and a few tentacles) can easily move around even though they have no visible motoring legs or appear to have the ability to float in the air. I know....what do you expect... George Lucas and his special effects team?
With that being said, fans of sci-fi movies of this era will definitely want to add "The Crawling Eye" to their collection. It's much better than most from this genre'.
Chilling, but..........2006-08-15
This is a surprisingly well-made "low budget" atmospheric film. I first saw it on "Million Dollar Movie" (Channel 9/NYC) in the late 50's (they would show a film all week long and 4-5 times on Sunday!). Janet Munro is superb as the psychic, and Forrest Tucker's usually wooden acting 'style' lends tension to the story line. The acting is first-rate. The only disappointment is the creature's 'reveal'. After such a tense, horrific build-up we finally get to see...well, I'm not going to spoil it, 'cuz it's an entertainingly creepy little hair-raiser, nonetheless.

Not as Good as I Remember.......2007-07-03
I had not seen these on TV for decades. I remember them as being the scariest movies while growing up. I was disappointed in the movies. They were not scary and were slow moving. I did like seeing the "head" Martian in the glass globe again in "Invaders" and the Crawling Eyes being burned.
I have seen "Them" over the years and that still holds up. I also like "Forbidden Planet," even with the low tech technology.
I guess I should have rented "The Crawling Eye" and "Invaders from Mars" before/instead of buying.
great copies of great old movies.......2007-06-14
I liked both of these movies. This DVD set has excellent quality copies. This is well worth purchasing for old movie buffs
Still SCARY After All These Years.......2006-08-27
I have fond memories of being terrified watching THE MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE on TV in NY. The Crawling Eye is great fun to see again....THEM was even better. Really a Classic. I thought Invader from Mars would be really eerie, but the print is very old and the night scenes are almost too dark to see. Still the alternate British ending was interesting. For anyone who grew up in the 50's and 60's this is a fun trip into the past.
Blast From the Past.......2006-03-13
True, the special effects are minimal but the movies are better than I remembered. I watched The Crawling Eye for 4 days in a row years ago on the Million Dollar Movie and loved every minute of it (at 9 years old) and I was suprised to find it hadn't become too laughable like so many other Scifi movies from the 50's I've seen. True, the crawling eye itself is not Jurassic Park scarey but My 19 year old daughter even enjoyed it! Invaders from Mars was pretty good too, although the aliens are kinda corney it's still a fun movie to watch. And, the bonus British version was a great addition, in fact I liked the British ending much better!! All in all they're both good to watch on a Saturday night with some popcorn and remember how scared you were the first time you saw them, way back when.
Great combo for kids.......2004-01-08
Invaders
Where is Col. Fielding when you need him?
Be sure to notice all the standard Sci-fi actors and even the Beaver's mother "Kelston's Secretary" (Barbara Billingsley). This movie was well done with just the right amount of spookiness and has a kid's perspective on what is happening. This is not a kid is smarter than his/her parents movie. There are lots of strange happenings and lots of tension. I will not go into the details as if you have not seen the movie it is more fun to be surprised.
Right from the beginning Little David MacLean sees a flying saucer land in the sandpit behind the house. He tells his parents. They being good parents check it out for him and naturally find nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe he had a nightmare or maybe the nightmare is just beginning as everyone starts acting strange and only David can sound the alarm. What would you do?
Crawling
The eyes have it
Based on a British TV series The Trollenberg Terror.
Don't lose your head over this one. Some people feel compelled to go there. Forest Tucker carries a gun. Why? Everyone gathers like an Agatha Christie movie. They have the standard 50's SCI/FI equipment. Yet your future is cloudy (radioactive cloudy). Do not watch this movie if you are in a cabin.

Customer Reviews:
A "REEL" BARGAIN - BUT THIS DVD DOES NOT OFFER A GREAT VIDEO TRANSFER FOR "THE CRAWLING EYE".......2006-02-18
IN A NUTSHELL:
Two of my favorite creature features that still pleasantly haunt me from my childhood.
ABOUT THE DVD: HERE'S THE PROBLEM
The DVD put out by "CATCOM VIDEO" offers a pretty good transfer of the "KILLER SHREWS" but a very faded and degraded video transfer of "The Crawling Eye". That's a real shame because I was hoping the Crawling Eye would be a better transfer than the 2 VHS versions I also have, but the videos played better than this DVD.
There is also a part missing, which is also missing from the 2 video editions I have. In it, "Hans" is fleeing in a car from the Hotel and drives into the crawling eye which explains how he later returned as a zombie to attempt to slay Ann Pilgrim [Janet Murnro]. This scene was deleted over time, probably to fit TV time slots, and I was hoping that this "Catcom" DVD would have restored this scene. I do plan on buying other editions of "The Crawling Eye", as I am not completely satisfied with this DVD edition, especially because of the missing scene and the poor video quality. You see, I really do enjoy this film, which was the first scary movie my older brother took me to see, almost 48 years ago.
The Killer Shrews, on the other hand, played as well as the video version did when it was brand new. This DVD is worth the price easily, just for "The Killer Shrews".
BONUS FEATURE: A CARTOON THAT REALLY GROWS ON YOU - REEL-EE!
You get a really neat cartoon from the silent film era, involving a "RAREBIT", a cute little creature who keeps growing, and growing, and growing. It features the lovely music of Schubert's Piano Improvisational Sonata and there is a parody of King Kong which includes an air attack by armed bi-planes. I kid you not!
BOTTOM LINE:
Despite the video quality problems that afflict "The Crawling Eye", this DVD is still a tremendous bargain and both the "RAREBIT" cartoon and "The Killer Shrews" play quite well. Plus, "The Crawling Eye" is a really good movie, especially for the genre.
