There's something inescapably appealing about this camp 1983 Star Wars-meets-The Lord of the Rings knockoff that encourages the viewer to overlook its many silly shortcomings and simply enjoy the fun. James Horner's rollicking music score certainly helps, as does the epic-scale CinemaScope photography of the breathtaking Italian landscapes. The costumes and extravagant production design are also great to look at, and much of Derek Meddings's visual effects work still looks striking. Freddie Jones stands head and shoulders above the rest of the cast as the wise Ynyr, while the two romantic leads, Ken Marshall as Prince Colwyn and Lysette Anthony (with an overdubbed American voice) as Princess Lyssa, are mere formalities on which to hang the plot. The all-British supporting cast includes Todd Carty, Bernard Bresslaw, Robbie Coltrane, Liam Neeson, and the gorgeous Francesca Annis. If you feel the need for some escapist sword-and-sorcery fantasy, then Krull delivers in full measure. --Mark Walker

5 out of 5 stars Krull's rating.......2007-05-15

The movie arrived in great shape. It's has a clear visual and the audio is satisfactory as well.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the film that has started this fashion.......2007-05-11

KRULL, witchcraft, sorcery, princess and a hero savior, are in this film packed with the earlier FX in blue screen. Shooted in England and directed by Peter Yates (Bullit & The Deep)

4 out of 5 stars Quit Comparing to Star Wars and Enjoy.......2007-04-07

Look I know this isn't on the same level as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, but it wasn't ever intended to be. It's an entertaining, somewhat cheesy, sci-fi adventure that is a bit too long but has good action scenes and cool characters. All you sci-fi snobs need to get off your pedastools and love this awesomely bad movie.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best fantasy.......2007-03-23

I saw Krull when it first came out in theaters, and while I must concede that the plot is rather lame, 2 things stand out for me in this fantasy movie: the musical score, and the part where Prince Colwyn and the robbers catch and ride the fabulous Firemares. That was my favorite part of the movie, as I am an avid horse-lover, and recognized the horses as Clydesdales right off. That fantasy ride on those Clydesdales would strongly appeal to any genuine horse-lover,and make the movie a must-have for horse-lovers. Plus, the music adds an unforgettable aspect to this wonderful fantasy sequence. No, it's not a great movie, but it was made to be a fun fantasy, not an Oscar contender.

4 out of 5 stars Awesomely Bad.......2007-02-15

If you're after a spellbinding epic, watch one of the Lord of the Rings movies. If you're looking for an awesomely campy 80's film, complete with cyclops, fire-mares, and flying sword-frisbees, then this movie is for you. An awesomely good time, but not something I would ever want to watch alone.

Amazon.com essential video

What's completely and utterly baffling about Killer Klowns is not the plot--that's rather tidily summed up by the title--but the fact that it got made at all. According to the filmmakers, (the Chiodo brothers: Charles, Edward, and Stephen) all it took to convince the studio was a one-page treatment and a picture of a clown holding a gun. It boggles the mind. Anyway, some killer Klowns descend from outer space and start wrapping their hapless victims in cotton candy for later consumption. Debbie and Mike suspect something's amiss, but who will believe them? The movie's greatest asset is its willingness to play on the inherent creepiness of clowns. The Klowns are grotesque parodies of their big-top cousins, hiding hideous malformed teeth behind terrifying circus makeup. It's impossible to tell if Killer Klowns is truly meant to be scary, but it is compelling in its thoroughness: popcorn, balloon animals, and really big shoes are all used to their fullest effect. The only cast member you'll recognize immediately is veteran character actor John Vernon as Officer Mooney, but keep an eye out for Christopher Titus in a small role as Bob McReed. Then just sit back and stare open-mouthed in bewildered joy. --Ali Davis

Description

Finally the truth about clowns is out! Beneath their smirky sinister grins and wildly patterned clothes are clever killers from out of this world. The "juxtaposition of their toy-store arsenal and malevolent intent proves to be a tasty combination" (Los Angeles Times) in this killer entertainment that will leave you fearing these big-top creatures for good. A spaceshiplooking like a circus tentlands in a field near a small town, signaling the attack of deviant, red-nosed, balloon-twisting psychos from another world who plan to annihilate mankindby turning people into cotton candy! Luckily, the town's teen citizenry decides to fight back and teach the cosmic bozos a lesson. But these klowns are no klutzes, turning popcorn, peanuts and caramel corn into playfulbut deadlyweapons of madcap destruction and mayhem!

4 out of 5 stars classic horror.......2007-05-15

This is a must have for the horror enthustist. It is a typical eighties cheesy horror flick, but a classic in my book. If you love B rated horror movies from the eighties, then you have to add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Big Top Of Death... .......2007-04-26

From the far reaches of space they came, seeking an unwary populace to devour and destroy! With their tiny car, floppy shoes, and bone-white faces, they crept into town one dark night. The KILLER KLOWNS had arrived, just in time for dinner! Yep, this amazing little low-budget movie is a must see / must own classic! Whether you love clowns or hate them, KKFOS belongs in every dvd collection! We get cotton candy cadaver coccoons, alien clown-larva popcorn pop-guns, and flesh-dissolving pies! We even get a boxing glove decapitation scene for added enjoyment! John Vernon (Animal House's Dean Wormer himself!) and Royal Dano (Messiah Of Evil) add their comedic talents to this hellish carnival of hilarity! Guaranteed 100% ridiculous and F-U-N! Buy immediately! P.S.- The "Clownzilla" sequence is my personal favorite. Very well done!...

4 out of 5 stars klowns=Funny.......2007-03-31

I found this movie to be more funny than scary. There was a few parts that were kinds creepy.

Definitely scary to anyone who already is afraid of clowns.

4 out of 5 stars Another great John Massari score!.......2007-01-28

It's hard to describe this movie - campy, yes, strange, definitely unsettling. But it's the John Massari score that stands out for me. I'm pleased to see that the soundtrack for Killer Klowns is now available. It's worth viewing for the music alone!

Director Doug Liman's follow-up to the winning Swingers is a rollicking adventure that, while lacking in any substantial plot, speeds along with nonstop adrenaline and style to burn. Taking a cue from Pulp Fiction, Liman plays tricks with time and overlapping plots, all of which play out in L.A. and Las Vegas in a 24-hour period sometime between Christmas and New Year's. Slacker grocery-store clerk Ronna (Sarah Polley) is trying to score rent money by selling hits of Ecstasy at a rave party, but winds up inadvertently double-crossing a ruthless dealer (sexy and scary Timothy Olyphant). She's also invading the dealing turf of her coworker Simon (Desmond Askew), a Brit on his first trip to Vegas, which turns nightmarish after a jaunt with pal Marcus (Taye Diggs) to a "gentleman's club" turns violent. And then there's the two soap-opera actors (Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf) who cross paths with Ronna more than once in their attempts to divest themselves of a drug-related charge by participating in a sting.

The way Liman and writer John August layer these stories owes a huge debt to Quentin Tarantino, but the comedy and action sequences rocket like a bat out of hell with energy, humor, and genuine surprise. In addition to some hilarious dialogue exchanges--including a classic scene between Ronna's stoned friend (Nathan Bexton) and a Zen cat--Liman works wonders with one the most winning ensembles in recent memory, a cast that includes both established actors and TV cuties. Mohr, Diggs, and especially Polley (doing a 180 from her turn in The Sweet Hereafter) are as excellent as you'd expect, but it's Wolf (of Party of Five) and Dawson's Creek's Katie Holmes (as Polley's best bud) who turn in revelatory work; Holmes especially seems poised to be a breakout star. An amazing cinematic ride--like a roller coaster, you'll want to go back again and again. --Mark Englehart

Description

Eighteen-year-old Ronna, accompanied by reluctant
partner-in-crime and fellow supermarket checkout clerk Claire, is
desperately looking to score some rent money before she's evicted.
Simon, an impulsive Brit, is driving a stolen car with buddy Marcus
during a no-holds-barred night of partying on the Las Vegas strip.
Adam and Zack, a pair of TV stars, find themselves in the middle of a
real-life drug sting - and a very creepy Christmas dinner.

Welcome to the edgy comedy GO, in which the misadventures of a group
of young people collide in Los Angeles' raucous underground scene.

Set over a 24-hour period in L.A. and Las Vegas, this unconventionally
structured comedy is told from the decidedly off-center perspectives
of three parties involved in the outrageous events that surround a
botched drug deal: a duo of down-on-their-luck supermarket checkout
girls, a pair of soap opera actors and an impetuous British expatriate
- all of whom discover they are in way over their heads. In the midst
of this wild ride, we learn about everything from the possible
advantages of mutli-level marketing to the techniques of tantric
lovemaking to how to make a fast buck at a rave with a little
ingenuity and a box of cold medicine.

4 out of 5 stars very good movie.......2007-06-15

Not too sure on the replay value on this one, but it's worth seeing once.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2007-03-23

What a good film! The script is just fantastic, the directing is assured and dynamic, and there's so much talent in the cast. A very young Katie Holmes shines in her role as a bored supermarket clerk, as does Sarah Polley (whatever happened to her?), whose attempt to get some money to avoid being evicted triggers this amazing story. Desmond Askew is both charming and hilarious -a rare and winning combination--and Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf make a funny couple.

5 out of 5 stars THE MOVIE "GO".......2007-03-09

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE INDIE MOVIES! I LOVE MANNY'S CHARACTER PLAYED BY NATHAN BEXTON, HE REMINDS ME OF A YOUNG JOHNNY DEPP.

5 out of 5 stars A glorious juxtaposition.......2007-03-07

This movie rocks! The most underrated comedy of all time. It's a lurid tale of a group of young party-goers who have an air of invincibility. These feelings are put to the test as they tromp through this wild ride.
The adventure follows the trail of three groups of people. It all starts on common ground, the local supermarket. It branches off from there, ricocheting through a Vegas casino, strip club, rave party, a cop's house, a drug dealer's apartment, and even to the hospital. It's such a fun trip.
This is another masterful job from Doug Liman, who also directed Swingers. A must-see.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-01-09

This movie should be a classic with endless rotation on Comedy Central. It's definitely worth having on DVD. I just watched it for the 6th time, and I can't wait to see it again. It puts me in such a great mood.

Don't let the "Katie Holmes" sub-headline fool you into thinking this is a teen movie. There are great performances by Jay Mohr, William Fichtner (the FBI agent from Prison Break), Desmond Askew (hilarious British guy) and Breckin Meyer (The main character in Road Trip).

The overall theme of this movie is a drug deal. However, because of the interesting way the three stories are weaved together, it makes it stand out from the bunch of other movies about drugs. Did I mention that it's also hilarious? Too many favorite scenes to count...

You'd be hard-pressed to find a modern-day couple as impossibly glamorous as Rupert Everett and Madonna; their casting as common folk in the gay-parenting drama The Next Best Thing is just one of the film's myriad problems. (One thing we never needed to see was these two pushing grocery carts in a supermarket. It's just unnatural.) Best friends in sun-dappled L.A. (he's a landscaper, she's a yoga instructor), Abbie (Madonna) and Robert (Everett) fall into an amorous embrace on a fateful Fourth of July after a few too many martinis. Robert's gay, which complicates things; even more complicating is Abbie's confession a few weeks later that she's with child. Six years later, Robert, Abbie, and their son Sam are all living together peacefully and happily--that is, until a hunky investment banker (Benjamin Bratt) starts making eyes at Abbie, throwing their carefully constructed dynamic into disarray.

Lazily directed by Oscar-winner John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) with an eye towards his actors' muscle tone rather than characterizations (even the kid does yoga), the faults in The Next Best Thing aren't solely on the shoulders of its miscast stars, but rather the painfully inept screenplay by Tom Ropelewski. With cardboard dialogue that sounds like bad first-draft material--including wailing by Madonna about how she can't find a man (ha!) and a gym-buffed Everett complaining about gay male body image (double ha!)--the movie stumbles from domestic comedy to custody-suit tragedy when it takes a bizarre left turn in the third act. Any statements about new definitions of family are buried underneath these dubious events, which (of course) provide teary courtroom outbursts for both leads. Everett has a quick way with a one-liner, and Madonna is more relaxed than she's ever been in a film, but Schlesinger just tosses them in front of the camera with no help whatsoever; the supporting cast, including Lynn Redgrave, Neil Patrick Harris, and Illeana Douglas, is also left to flounder inexplicably. There's a thoughtful and provocative movie to be made about gay parents, but The Next Best Thing certainly isn't it. --Mark Englehart

1 out of 5 stars Poor Madonna.......2007-04-25

"The Next Best Thing"

Poor Madonna

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"The Next Best Thing" has a lot going for it. Rupert Everett is a charming and gay leading man, the script is based on a very cute idea--a straight woman and a gay man decide to have a child. The problem is the leading lady, Evita herself, Madonna, just can't act. As Evita Peron she won a Golden Globe but she has not acted decently in any movie she has made besides that one role. I was all ready to be entertained by this film and I was entertained by the scenes without Madonna.
The plot in a very concise way goes like this--two best friends, a gay male (Everett) and a straight female (Madonna) spend the night together, she gets pregnant, they have a son whom they raise together and then she meets a straight man she wants to marry and the whole mess gets messier.
The premise for the movie is good but the script is just awful--there is no continuity, the characters are completely underdeveloped and Everett comes out looking as the bad guy. The child is somewhere and we hate everyone in the movie. The bad guy is the bad guy, the good gay guy is the bad guy, the child is the bad guy, and the boyfriend is the bad guy and so on and on. Madonna is obnoxious. For someone who cries all the time she looks beautiful. She plays a woman let down by one man too many and when she sleeps with her gay fried, she gets pregnant. And then the movie slides toward a mudslide. Now I love Madonna--when she sings and she still is looking good but she is not an actress--wait--she is an actress--a lousy one. A stellar cast with Madonna and Everett, Benjamin Bratt and Lynn Redgrave should make a stellar movie. Instead the made a real stinker. Maybe that is why it moved so fast--so we would not see how bad it is. In fact, it is so bad that it is good. Madonna's vapidity mesmerized me, Benjamin Bratt astounded me at how bad he was, Rupert Everett--I love you but you were terrible and Lynn Redgrave had a few seconds on the screen and was lost.
I rarely give anything a bad review--if something is bad, I choose not to write about it and I would not have written about this movie if I thought it was really bad. But this is not just really bad--it is politically too correct and pitifully awful. Rupert Everett, I am so sorry.

3 out of 5 stars Watchable, .......2007-02-14

This film has suffered very, very bad publicity and very, very bad reviews. But if you choose to see it open-minded, you might just get to like this mess.
"The Next Best Thing" initially sets itself up as a comedy. Robert (played by Rupert Everett) is always there for his best friend Abbie (Madonna), especially when it comes to comfort her over her terrible taste in men. And since he's also keen on men, he gives her a few pointers along the way. However, after a few drinks (and an unbelievably entertaining Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers act), Abbie gets pregnant. The viewer is then quite surprised when the whole thing turns serious and chaotic as Robert and Abbie decide to live and raise the baby together, and then struggle with problems concerning their family, friends and Abbie's new sweetheart (Benjamin Brett).
Now, the good thing about this film are its stars. Although it's hard to believe that it's taken them 30 minutes of the film to sleep together and that Madonna can't find a man in L.A., they are irresistible. Everett is top-notch as always and Madge has rarely seemed as much at home with a part as she does in this film. They are able to pull off the comedic parts and are good enough when the film surprisingly evolves into a study of family life.
However, the second half of the film doesn't really work. The problem is that "The Next Best Thing" is made of too many different influences and styles connected with very loose bonds. Are you able to go through a sitcom, a melodrama, and a courtroom drama in one film? Yes , it's quite possible to watch the ups and downs of this glamorous couple, but it can be difficult to digest the way they are developed.

2 out of 5 stars This Madonna Movie Had Potential but..........2005-12-31

She keeps on trying doesn't she, our Mads, like the trooper she is. No matter how many times the critics trash her. Honestly, this movie had a lot of potential, with an interesting story line that tackled a kind of a modern day re-definition of family units and the moral dilemmas and choices involved. With its very worthy supporting cast it could have really gone somewhere but just failed to get there.
Madonna god bless you, I truly wish you could read this because I have two bits of stern advice which I'm sure many others would agree with, to help your (flailing) acting career, if it's not too late. Firstly, get some major voice coaching! Your delivery of dialogue is so unbelievably stilted and wooden at times. It's like you've just learnt the script. And what is up with this phoney pseudo half British half American accent you put on? Was that supposed to be part of your character development or research?. Even though her gay best friend 'Robert' is British, the audience would assume 'Abbie' is just an American living in LA. Besides which, it just sounded so fake. I mean we know you've become a bit of an 'Anglo-Phile' now that you're married to a pom (Australian slang for 'English person'), but you don't have to make it part of every character you play now do you? Concentrate on your acting craft before you start with the specialty accents luv. Meryl streep you aint. Secondly, if you want us to believe in Madonna the actress you've got to leave out Madonna the pop star just for a moment, and quit with the mindless marketing of your pop image, just for the sake of selling more records. My god woman, why does nearly everyone of your movies have to feature your music in the soundtrack somewhere? That scene early on in the film, where you all sing American Pie, at the gay friend's lover's funeral, was just sooo embarrassingly contrived and unnecessary. And quite frankly, fond as I am mostly of your music, your recorded version of 'American Pie' was very weak. Just lifeless.
I know I am being a bit harsh but someone really needs to tell you these things, or rather you really need to hear them,'cause I have actually been a fan of yours from the beginning. Despite your money hungry commercialism, you're an amazing artist and woman in so many ways. I see the potential in your performances often and you have an incredible presence on stage and screen that cannot be denied. But when it comes to the craft of acting a lot more subtlety and discipline is required and you need to learn a bit of humility darling, come down to earth.
Now, as for the redeeming features of this movie, and there are some. I would love Rupert Everett in anything he does. He's so cleverly sardonic and witty in that classy British way. Unfortunately though he is sold rather short here due to a poor script and mediocre direction, but I still enjoyed his performance. I must say I did feel awfully sorry for Robert near the end. He must have felt, intentionally or not, tricked and used by Abbie in a way. I mean she really should have taken responsibilty to ensure who the father was initially, don't you think?. Benjamin Bratt is most easy on the eye and a welcome hetero-sexual addition. Also, I loved the colourful 'Sante Fe' style design and setting. As well as Madonna 'hippyish yoga teacher' chic, (though the yoga thing is also somewhat contrived, no doubt Madonna's influence?) Lastly, there are moments (yes some) when Madonna's acting and character are believable. I always find her the most convincing in her character's more casual, fun moments. Which makes me think she is better suited to lighter comedic roles like earlier on in her career. The kid who plays Sam is quite natural and cute. In reality though that poor child would be left feeling so torn and confused after all that had occurred. He's faced with the prospect of three fathers (or at least father roles) in his life. Overall I quite enjoyed the first part, but really lost interest when the 'same old, same old' court room battle scene came around. This movie isn't a total waste of time and it's always interesting to see what 'Queen Madonna' will come up with next.

5 out of 5 stars Take a deep breath, relax - and enjoy!.......2005-12-07

Have you ever bought at the stock market when everybody told you to sell - and won? That's what happened to me with this film. After buying almost all of John Schlesinger's films, I hesistated before ordering this one - in view of all that criticism. But then I assumed that - 1) Schlesinger cannot suddenly make a bad film after making so many excellent ones, and - 2) if so many bad things are said about a film it must somehow be good. Luckily, I was right this time.

Perhaps much of all that criticism springs from unjustified expectations. Let me try to put two points right: First: this is not a film about Madonna, or by Madonna. She is just an actress here - and a good one, just right for the part. Schlesinger does not present her as a singer or a sex symbol - but as a person. Secondly: Nobody has made a promise that this will be an in-depth, politically correct exploration of gay life. This is just a film - and an entertaining one. There is no law in the land that says a gay person cannot be a times a trifle ridiculous or sentimental, like other persons.

Therefore I recommend you follow the advice Madonna gives in her part as a Yoga teacher: Take a deep breath and relax - just enjoy this as another very good Schlesinger film - a real work of art.

2 out of 5 stars Patronising.......2005-05-22

This movie treats gays like preteens keen on, but too afraid to have sex with women. It reeks with anti-gay stereotypes without even being funny. It could be described as Madonna's ego trip delusion that all gay men are hot for her.

movie was boring and not funny... having a polish friend, i can probably tell polish people would not be able to relate to this movie

0/5 stars to me

1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2007-05-12

I have to disagree with the reviewers who say that this movie is offensive to Poles. I don't have an ounce of Polish blood, but I still found it to be a huge insult to my intelligence.

The movie was boring, pointless, and painfully unfunny. The filmmakers seem to think that all they have to do to make a movie quirky is to have their actors do stupid or self-destructive things, then follow it with happy circus music.

Don't waste your time with this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Busting stereotypes.......2007-04-21

Let me say first that if this film had been entitled, Pennsylvania Dutch Protestant Wedding, I might have had a different reaction to it.

Ultimately, though, it's about the truth behind the image people present of themselves and so its business is one of busting stereotypes, specifically the most mundane and therefore common stereotypes of life--Mother, Wife, Father, Husband, Daughter, Brother . . . Carl Jung would have loved this film. When people present themselves as icons, trouble is apt to follow.

The final act is hilarious in that it could happen in any family and any culture and proves that real life is apt to exciting enough even for a drama queen.

1 out of 5 stars Boring and Stereotypical !!!.......2006-03-04

This film shows almost every stereotypical form of behavior that has been associated with Poles, albeit Polish immigrants, since the beginning of time. In short, it's neither funny nor entertaining, and it's not groundbreaking in any sense of the word - it's simply pathetic!
Don't waste your time or money on a film that has the artistic/intellectual merit of pavement pizza.

5 out of 5 stars QUIRKY, AMUSING, HUMANIZING.......2005-05-05

I do not own the DVD. I own the soundtrack cd (great score!). But, I must say that there was a lot to enjoy in this movie. Quirky is just fine with me. And then, to be able to look at the fabulous Lena Olin!! I, too, am from an "ethnic" family, and, thus, look at portrayals of ethnic people with a particularly sensitive eye. In that light, I must say that I did not find anything so terribly or intentionally offensive in the portrayal of characters or nationalities here. As an adult, hopefully one realizes that there is a great deal of variety within each ethnic group. There is a lot of universal stuff here, too, as it relates to family and humanity. In fact, if the subject here had been Italians, this film might have been directed by Giuseppe Tornatore ["Cinema Paradiso," "Malena"]. I agree with other reviewers who recommended that some viewers need to take a chill pill and see the humanity and universality here. VERY MUCH WORTH A LOOK. Ciao!

A movie that champions freedom of speech for Bigots as the only freedom they promote is freedom for themselves but not for any who has different points of view...This piece of piled on propaganda is uneven and a great example of card stacking argumentation....It is the usual technique of like minded folks to portray anyone who disagees with them as totally stupid and evil...
First of all it portrays a crowd of conformists..Whenever ever everyone thinks a lot...NO ONE THINKING...
These are the same people who would shout down any conservative speaker who might appear on their campus...I taught school for years and these are not typical high school kids....
What 'principles/" did these infant minds brains champion? Drugs, homosexuality, free sex on demand...No counter arguments are given any space...
These 'champions of freedom?' would protest against any science teacher who would offer arguments championing the theory of creation science, any stuent starting a Bible club, the formation of ROTC classes...
These are examples of the people who have controled our culture since 1963 and helped to champion new sexually transmitted diseases, 40% of children being born to unwed mothers, increased drug use, ignorance of American history, falling graduation rates....
THE SLOGAN OF THE PEOPLE WHO CREATED THIS TRASH....
FREEDOM OF 'ME' BUT NOT FOR 'THEE'...Jack Schlatter

4 out of 5 stars "You're so gay, Cher wears YOUR clothes".......2007-01-13

Yes, it's some of the jokes like the one in the title that do sort of mar this otherwise brilliant, quick paced movie that pulls out all the stops to make its' point. Like the slightly smarter and more realistically presented Pump Up the Volume, Kids in America delves deep into the root of a major issue, a principal who has nothing but her own interests and future as a superintendant in mind. Unlike Pump whose high school population only really becomes active at the end, Kids' high school's students get involved right away. Throughout the movie they create some positive havoc in some truly jaw dropping ways. At the end, we hear our head revolutionary offer us "So, did we change the world? If not, its still early in the week" and yes, it seems that a phrase such as this is a perfect way to end this all too short film. They may have just got the ball rolling, which is exactly as it should be. There is work to be done in this fashion within schools all across America. We send our kids to these learning institutions every day. So as you watch Kids in America, take the cheesy jokes in stride and see the hugely important issues presented. You'll be glad you did.

I loved this movie
I am huge fan of Julie Bowen and she was fantastic in the movie

Also the cast of students were really GREAT

The movie was a lot of fun for me and the commentary track made it worthwhile to own rather than to rent

5 out of 5 stars good drama,.. not a comedy as the case suggests........2006-08-21

I think maybe the film studio at the last second wanted to attempt to sell this film as an "american pie". It's sad because this film is not about laughing at potty humor. It's about the never ending fight against tyrannical conservatism. Only the fight here is set in a high school. Based on real life events where students were suspended or expelled from school for no valid reason. (such as giving out condoms or expressing themselves in non-conservative ways.)

Despite the unfunny jokes that were probebly injected by the end of production to sell it as a comedy,.. this is an enjoyable film with the students sticking it to the ( beautiful, oddly casted) ice queen principal.

But for me this film had the shiny jewel of an adorable unknown actress Stephanie Sherrin (playes the cute red-head and romantic interest of the male lead character.) I couldn't take my eyes off of her.

The five or six minute long kiss scene during the credits is cool too.

5 out of 5 stars Great teen movie with great soundtrack!.......2006-07-26

5 out of 5 stars This is one of my 2 MOST favorite movies bar none!!!.......2006-01-22

This movie is funny ,toching and heart-wrenching film that is never cloying. The soundtrack is fantastic too! It makes you think about what's most inportant in life. It teaches a lesson about how we need each other and can learn something from anyone
My most favorite part of this film is Maury Chaykin's role of Uncle Arthur. In my opinion Maury is the greatest actor living. No one can bring the authenticity to any role they play like he can. Maury plays the role of Uncle Arthur with gentleness, whimsey and poigancy. I watch the scenes he's in over and over just to see him work his magic. This film should've won every award out there. It's more worth watching than lots of films people rave about and praise to the high heavens. Maury you should've won an academy award for this one and if had been up to me you would have!

5 out of 5 stars People throw away a lot of things that are good........2005-04-17

Wow! I am shocked at the low ratings on this wonderful movie! I saw this first because I am a Maury Chakin fan and I immediately loved it!

I enjoyed the way they showed how the scientist father is lost when his wife is dying, and his son finds comfort in Judaism. I love the way the two uncles enter the film, Arthur with his sweet bumbling walk and gentle ways; and Danny with his talk of conspiracy and hemlock.

I especially loved the part with the housekeeper and the way she wrinkled her nose when she said, "We love eggs!"

All I can say is "Whose we?"

"Call me Franz or call me nothing!"

In any case despite the few swear words I loved the fan and give Diane Keaton loads of praise for such a moving picture. The music was perfect and from his further work on "Little Woman" Thomas Newman is great, I can say he is delightful.

One of the most moving parts is after Steven's bar mitzvah and he asks his mother if she is dying. "Yes, yes I am Franz.....I'm so sorry."

I totally broke down here and every time I see it I cry. Get this movie and you will never feel sorry it is sweet, funny, and enduring.

3 out of 5 stars Good Performances.......2005-02-04

Normally I would rate this movie higher, I just feel that the movie is a little too hollywood. But as a film, this is Sentimentalism at it's best. John Tuturo gives a great performance (as usual) as a boys father who is so in love with his dying wife that he overlooks this needs of the rest of his family. Michael Richards plays the dufus (is that spelled correctly?) as usual and I must say, he's damn good at it. I feel that this is a great movie as a family love story, but I can't let slip the Hollywood affect. Film buffs will know what I mean.

1 out of 5 stars Okay, is THIS widescreen or not???.......2004-12-19

Why the big dark secret, guys? This is another one of those irritating few movies on Amazon.com where they won't tell us if it's in widescreen or not. If it is, I'd most likely buy it and give it a bunch more stars, since I already think Andie McDowell is great. If this recent film is not in widescreen, though, and has been butchered down to standard screen, FORGET it.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing like the book.......2004-11-28

This is a very well-made movie but it is nothing like the original book. The movie has elements of the book, but it has an all-together different feel to it, almost a diltuion of the story. Of course, as has been said, the book will always be better, but the film (directed by Diane Keaton) stands on its own.

I would recommend if you've read the book, see the movie only as a visual representation. If you've seen the movie and would like a wider appreciation of the movie, read the book.

1 out of 5 stars This is genuinely the worst film that ever made it to screen.......2004-12-30

This is an unbelievably awful piece of work. I only looked it up on the internet after a Christmas game of "what's the worst film you've ever seen?". It never even made it to the big screen in the UK, and makes no mark on the film guides.

I saw it in a cinema in The Middle East, where there was nothing better to do. Even though it was 7 years ago, I can still recall the pointlessly shallow evil of the baddies, the dreadfulness of the acting, terrible, terrible special effects, a plot that makes Police Academy 6 look like Fellini's 8 1/2, and the feeling of disbelief at yet another dip in the already-low quality of what was set before us.

It was so bad that it was a relief when someone's mobile rang as it gave us some decent dialogue to listen to. "The Sender" made me want to join a sect that would brainwash me into forgetting, or at least prevent any 20th Century influences from harming me. It is so bad that now, when I watch "Reservoir Dogs", it's not as good as it used to be. If Michael Madsen tried to cut off my ear, I'd let him if it meant I didn't have to listen to any more of his dialogue. I'd ask him to poke my eyes out while he was at it though.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite alien films..........2002-06-28

I enjoy watching this movie. I woke up at 4AM to tape this movie on Cinemax years ago. I just wish for a reasonably-priced VHS for sale or, even better, a Region 1 DVD release...

This movie may be a little cheesy at times, but I really enjoyed it. The special effects are great and (i believe that) the story is closer to fact, especially concerning the "sender" gene...

I'd recommend you buy this (if you can even find it)!

2 out of 5 stars Shelli Leather is the best thing in the movie.......1999-01-30

Jon Gries (Men in Black) and Saturday Night Live's Garrett Morris star in this bizarre yet compelling little road movie. Sunny Holiday (Gries) dreams of being a singer. Rather than taking a more direct route, he works on "building his audience" by hitting tiny karaoke contests across the country. Gries underplays Sunny well, making him neither too good nor too bad a singer; his dreams seem reasonable and ludicrous at the same time. Morris makes Les a beautiful counterpoint--someone who's either a shrewd genius or completely nuts. The story line is an odd one that falls apart a bit at the end, but is nonetheless worth watching. Much like Sunny and Les, Jackpot is weird but surprisingly likable. --Ali Davis

1 out of 5 stars Hated It.......2004-02-04

Too many cuss words, and an improbable plot made this movie a complete waste of time. Don't torture yourself. Watch Scotland, Pa instead, if you want to see a smart little off-the-beat movie.

5 out of 5 stars It's like Candy.......2003-03-17

The actor singing Cameo's "Candy" is worth the price of admission. There are some hella funny scenes in this movie-- and Garrett Morris should have won an Academy Award for this character.

4 out of 5 stars American Idol.......2003-03-16

This movie is the "Five Easy Pieces" of our time. Except that Jackpot was shot in 15 days and for 400k (budget from commentary track) which gives it a brilliant Cassevetes feel. What I love about this film is that it really depicts a regular guy trying to become a singer, this is so American Idol! Maybe the contestants on that show can watch "Jackpot" and see where they are all going to end up... selling soap door to door.

1 out of 5 stars Immature work.......2002-10-04

The only reason why I watched this movie was because I was so impressed with the Polish brothers' "Twin Falls Idaho," but this movie really disappointed me.
The first hour started out so so but had some tiny potential for getting better. It had an interesting premise, a karoake want to be singer traveling on the road with his sidekick. But then something happened completely frivolous to the plot. He meets a teenage Lolita type character for a few painful minutes. The Polish brothers just had to let this into have their fun. This isn't a serious Nabokov study and doesn't help the movie at all, easily could have been written out.

4 out of 5 stars the Wichita linemen call home.......2002-09-23

JACKPOT is one of those films that come under the "unusual" category. Written and directed by the Polish brothers, Mark and Michael, we can certainly qualify their so-called "different" credentials. This is the eclectic story of two wayward loners acting out their adolescent pipedream of future stardom. Crisscrossing the western United States on the karaoke circuit, we come to understand and share this dream of Sonny (John Cries) and his manager Lester (wonderfully played by Garrett Morris). Juxtaposing scenes from the past, present, and future, it seems everyone wants to chew some verbal butt on Sonny's irrepressible lifestyle. Humor and blind luck turn into allies as we start to warm up to their numerous pratfalls. Dropping our idiosyncratic characters into one deadpan situation after another, we almost (and I use that sparingly) build some support and hopeful outcome for unsung heroes. IF becomes a mighty word as situations spin away on a thin dime (literally). Wonderful cameos by Daryl Hannah, Mac Davis, Peggy Lipton, Anthony Edwards, and Crystal Bernard help lend this film credence and amenity. Think left of center and you're right on target. Granting a wide berth, JACKPOT strikes quirky dead center. Like David Lynch, their predecessor and mentor, the Polish bothers have comes up with another true original. Fame and fortune has never been farther.
