Worth it for Disc 2 alone.......2007-03-14
The first movie is rather slow. But the second one is pretty freaking awesome, especially if you activate language Track 3!! Texarcana Lake Gamera is one of the funniest things I've ever seen/heard. More like "What's Up, tigerlily?" than Mystery science theater, they redubbed the entire movie except for the main female character in redneck voices and altered the script to hilarious effect while still following the general storyline. It's rare that something will make me laugh sitting watching it by myself but this one had me chuckling throughout. I could have done without about 50 of the "Holy Crap!" dubs that were WAY overused but some of the things were so clever that I forgive them this one excess. The General that sounded like George Bush was hilarious, the one who was dubbed with the voice of a 7 year old boy was insane and the radioman that just says "Kyuh Kyuh Kyuh" like Roscoe P. Coltrane from the "Dukes of Hazzard" was genius. I have yet to watch the third film but I have no doubt the commentary by Gamera will be amusing. Unless it's just Gamera screaming through the whole movie in which case it will only be amusing for about 30 seconds. So if you like Wild Turkey, Bar B Que, Guns and your sister a little too much this is definitely the box set for you!
Friend of Children & Giant Monster Fans Everywhere.......2007-02-02
Even the most causal fans of the "giant Japanese monster movies" that were staples of 1960s "creature features" will delight in this three disc set! Gamera gets an incredible updating while retaining the "turtle cry", the flaming breath, the flight by spinning shell; in short, everything we loved in a package that is slick, skillful and dazzling. A triumph on all levels, with stories kids can still enjoy, while being more mature than the original films were. If only all movies could be this well done.
Gamera ROCKS!!!.......2007-01-10
I haven't seen the Giant Turtle since I was a kid, I LOVE these new movies!
I had the 60's ones on DVD, but the special effects on the 3 new movies was out of this world!
If you are a Godzilla Fan then you'll LOVE Gamera!!!
Good box set but its non-anamorphic.......2007-01-06
So if you have a Widescreen tv you'll have to deal with zooming the picture to fill it in.
The unknown giant.......2006-09-11
I never heard of this monster called Gamera before, till I saw it here at Amazon. I read a few of the reviews and thought: "Let's try this".
I'm really glad I did. This is a great collection of three terrific movies. The special effects are stunning. I don't think I ever saw more beautiful explosions. The explosion of the Kyoto train station (in the third movie: Revenge of Iris) is incredible, as well as the total destruction of Tokio when Gamera suddenly appears in that same movie.
And what about the acting. Well, I've seen a lot worse in Godzilla films. The third film is without a doubt the best acted film of the three, but the other two ain't bad at all.
The stories aren't great, the second one is a mess really. There are so many characters you cannot tell them apart, but this second movie has the most fantastic monster though. It is called Legion and it really is a worthy adversary. Great stuff !!!
And then something about the extra's on the disc's: A lot of trailers and an interesting three part interview with the special effects director. But the craziest extra is a soundtrack (on the second film) in which all the characters speak like rednecks and the music is changed to hillbilly style. It's called the Texarcana lake track. It's insane but absolute fun.
Now, the big question, should you buy this. If you like Godzilla films, I think the answer is clear: Yes, absolutely.

This fourth entry in the Gamera series found the titanic turtle paralleling the cuddly direction of his competitor Godzilla. When two young, star-gazing children investigate a spaceship that has practically landed in their backyard, they are whisked away to Terra, our undiscovered tenth planet whose two "groovy spacegirls" are all that remain of a once-superior alien civilization. But the boys soon discover that their seemingly friendly hosts have sinister plans in mind for them. Never fear, for Gamera comes to save them, flying through space to battle the spacegirls' guardian Guiron, a giant, rhino-like beast possessing a razor-sharp steel blade for a snout. This movie is truly suited for young children, for older kids, and especially for adults will chortle at the unintentional humor arising from the cheesy effects, underplayed roles, and possibly the worst dubbing job in Japanese monster history. Taken as comedy, adults will find this a real camp gem--when the two boys witness Guiron slice 'n' dice a laser-spewing Gaos, one of them proclaims: "What a monster!" --Bryan Reesman
Customer Reviews:
Who Knew That Gamera Lettered In Gymnastics?.......2006-08-29
This has got to be one of the silliest of all the Japanese rubber monster movies. Two Japanese boys discover a flying saucer, fly it to a planet inhabited by Guiron, a ridiculous monster with a knife-snout and throwing stars in his nostrils (watch and learn,) and two space babes dubbed very poorly. They uncover a plot that involves both head shaving (a theme introduced early in the film by helpful policeman and Jerry Lewis impersonator, Detective "Cornjob"...don't miss the practice with the disemboweling cutlass) and brain eating. Somehow Gamera (a friend to all children if you'll recall your Gamera history) learns of the kid's distress, comes to the planet, defeats Guiron with a missile through his nostril (really), and takes the boys back to Earth in his mouth.
If this sounds muddled, it is: it is one of the more ludicrous plots of the genre, and is definitely worth a few laughs for the unadulterated cheese factor. My favorite scene in the film hands down is the gymnastics routine Gamera performs in mid-fight (followed by the daintiest dance you have ever seen a giant turtle monster do.) This is all, of course, utterly ridiculous, but therein resides the appeal.
gamera on dinosaur planet.......2006-07-02
i wave seen three gamera movies so far this is my favourite one because it has the most monsters. the story has gamera a prehitoric monster fithg a huge dinosaur on a distant planet here aliens have kidnaptte two kids. this films have the monsters gamera the giant turtle gyaos a pteratactyle from space and of course guiron the intergalactic reptile monster.
Sad to see what became of our favorite giant flying turtle.......2006-05-05
This was a rather sad entry into the Gamera series of movies. The plot, such as it is, is two young boys, Akio and Tom find a spaceship and go inside to explore. The ship takes off and lands on a planet that is in our solar system but is directly on the other side of Earth so we never saw it. The only inhabitants left are two attractive women and their monster, Guiron. Guiron is basically a lizard with a knife for a head. The women read Akio's mind to find out information and then plan to eat the boy's brains before flying to earth. But of course, Gamera, the friend of all children, comes to the rescue. He defeats Guiron and takes the boys back to Earth safely.
The dubbing in this movie is absolutely horrible. The monster fight scenes were comical. In fact, Guiron's whole look is ridiculous. Akio, one of the young boys, is obsessed with living in a world without traffic accidents and keeps calling planets "stars". Back on Earth the adults won't believe Akio's sister that he took off in a spaceship, except for one policeman, "Cornjob".
These Japanese monster movies are always fun to watch, but some of them also had at least a semblance of quality. This one has none. A very strangely written script, beyond terrible dubbing and lower than low-budget effects.
Bad Science but Good Brains!.......2006-04-19
I love zombie movies. Especially campy ones like Return of the Living Dead and Night of the Creeps. Imagine my pleasant surprise to find *brain lust* in a Japanese monster movie! And they're two of the cutest brain eaters you'd ever want to meet! So sad they never got to dine on Akio. Basically, a UFO lands lands on the outskirts of a Japanese village...two kids decide it would be an excellent idea to take a joyride while the alien's away...they race a giant space turtle...then land on a star(?) inhabited by the aforementioned ladies...the girls have a monster with a head shaped like an exacto knife named Gurion...Gurion cuts off a pterodactyl's leg with a laser beam...he also fights Gamera the space turtle a few times...the alien babes die and the kids return to Earth to spread the message of world peace and...ending traffic accidents! Boy is this film ridiculous. The science is so flawed you'd think one of Bush's cronys at NASA wrote the script. Landing on a star! Stopping traffic accidents! Come on guys..but you really can't go wrong with hot brain craving japanese girls and giant rubber monsters smashing each other up, can you? Recommended
Silly.......2006-01-23
It seems like Japan is visited by more monsters and aliens than any other location on earth; a sort of Bermuda triangle of monsters. I have to believe that someone has generated at least one college paper based on the incredible coincidence of monsters and Japan. This time we have three children looking through a low-power telescope when an alien spacecraft lands nearly in their backyard. The obvious choices for the children would seem to be, a) tell their mother, b) call the police, or c) climb aboard the spacecraft and journey to another planet populated by brain-sucking babes. You can guess which answer wins.
On the way to the other planet Gamera shows up and, other than breathing nicely and making growly monster noises in the vacuum of outer space, tries to keep the spacecraft from landing on planet Terra (do not be confused with our planet named Terra - I am sure you can see the immediate distinction between names).
Once on the planet, Tom and Akio (Akio's little sister had to stay behind because she was too little) immediately encounter Guiron and Gaos. Unfortunately, this early scene generates a huge laugh when Gaos's foot is lasered off. Seriously, this scene is unintentionally funny. The movie continues a downhill slide from here.
The boys soon encounter the only two inhabitants of planet Terra, two females hungry for boy brain. The movie never explains why boy brain is a delicacy on Terra. Through a variety of machinations and Gamera, who clearly was preparing for the summer Olympics (in yet another hilarious scene) the boys and Gamera are able to escape back to the earth and the end of this film, thereby ending their movie career.
It is usually at this point where I point out the redeeming values of this movie and explain how much you should watch it. The problem is that this movie is a cheesy monster movie with horrible costumes for the monsters. Gamera is too rubbery in some scenes. You can see one of Guiron's seams in one scene. Another problem is that it seems each version of the movie has been edited differently from the other versions, so there are different scenes in each one. I am guessing that someone was trying to keep this movie as oriented to children as possible, and so the edits were done to reduce different aspects of the violence. Sad to say, as bad as this movie is I will probably watch it again one of these days.
For those into trivia, according to imdb this movie has been known by a bunch of other titles:
"Attack of the Monsters"
"Gamera VS the Giant Evil Beast Guiron"
"Gamera Vs. Guillon"
"Gamera vs. Guiron"
"Gamera vs. the Devil-Beast Giron"
I am guessing that similar cheese can come in different titles.

Customer Reviews:
Solid Gamera movie and a family-friendly effort.......2007-06-13
Wow, amazon finally has Gamera the Brave
available. For those who weren't aware of
it, I believe it came out around March of 2006,
a bit more than a year ago (I bought mine off of ebay).
OK, well it's here now and I'm happy to write the
first Amazon review for it.
This movie, a celebration of Gamera's 40th
Anniversary, "sort of" follows the continuity
of the earlier Gamera flicks release in the
1960s and 1970s. Note that the more
recent Gamera trilogy by Shusuke Kaneko was of an
'alternate universe' Gamera, just like GMK was
an alternate universe for Godzilla. In the
Gamera trilogy 'turtles' as we know
them don't exist - kind of strange but true!
That fact isn't even mentioned
in those movies, but that's what Kaneko
had in mind. Well, turtles do exist in
the universe of Gamera the Brave. So while
watching the opening of Gamera the Brave,
you can basically imagine it as being the
'last battle' of the original Gamera.
Gamera the Brave opens with a large adult Gamera
giving his life during an epic battle with a hoard
of gyaos (a powerful scene and a great opener)!
The village he saves reveres Gamera as a hero.
Some 30 years later, a boy named Toru finds a
peculiar but otherwise normal sized turtle egg on
an island, along with a mysterious red stone. The
egg hatches and Toru decides to keep the turtle as
a pet, naming it Toto (not my first choice for a
name, but oh well).
Toto shortly after begins to grow larger and to
manifest Gamera-like powers, and it slowly begins to
become apparent that Gamera has somehow either
returned or reincarnated. [As an aside, my nephew is
always asking me 'Did Mothra really die? Did Godzilla
really die?" I give him the answer I like best: Kaiju
don't actually 'die' - as they often display a
regenrative power that allows their essence to come
back, eventually. Well, right or wrong, it sits better
with us feeling that kaijus are mystical forces of
nature and, as such, can always return at some point
and kick LOTS of a-double-s.]
Meanwhile, a monster known as Zedus begins
reeking havok in the waters of the pacific ocean,
sinking ships etc. (Zedus looks like a variation of
a komodo dragon) and it all leads to a climactic
showdown in Nagoya, Japan. In typical Gamera-movie
fashion, our turtle takes a fierce pounding! This
movie, however, saves most of the fighting for the
end (there is a nice ealier battle though), and
instead spends a lot of time with character
development. I should mention that there is
considerable character as well as emotional development
in this movie - more than you typically get in
a kaiju flick.
To its credit, the emotional aspects are not cloying
or distracting, and instead strike a pretty nice
balance. Remember, this movie is still geared towards a
younger audience. It's a different kind of kaiju flick
in some ways, but the kids rally for Gamera
and establish that ol' heart-to-heart connection
in a very traditional way.
Gamera is an awesome kaiju. He's been in some amazing
flicks over his 40 years.
Do yourself a favor and don't bother comparing him
to Godzilla - there's no reason; they both have a great
deal of merit and, should they ever meet on the big screen,
I like to think they would (after a nice kaiju battle)
become friends and unite against a common threat.
Gamera the Brave is highly recommeded for all ages
and all fans of the kaiju genre!

Customer Reviews:
Terrible Quality.......2007-05-05
The movies are what they are - decent science fiction that I grew up watching as a kid and still love to see. The quality of these movies are terrible though - they only provide a full screen version that cuts off stuff on the screen, despite trying different display options. I knew the first couple of Gamera movies were in black & white, but they are so 'washed out' that I can't even enjoy them. My son loves watching Godzilla movies with me, but I couldn't get him to watch for more than 10 minutes or so, which I don't think was because the content, but instead due to the poor quality...
I guess you get what you pay for!
Great Films on a Poor DVD.......2005-10-29
The older Gamera films have never been treated fairly on DVD in the US, and this is a prime example. All we get are poor fullscreen copies. This release has 3 movies crammed on one disc. Artifacting is a bit of a problem. If you have to have the movies for your collection in one way or another, this is a cheap way to do it, but you should seek out the Japanese versions if you want great quality.
Great for kids.......2005-09-16
My 5 year old son loves everything Godzilla or any monsters right around that time. He enjoyed this movie although he got bored waiting for the monsters to show up in the beginning. Since the movie is old, the color and picture quality is not that great. But if you're anything like my son, you will truly enjoy it!
The original series!.......2005-09-08
I give this collection four stars
because of the great price - if you're
not a hardcore kaiju collector - or
even if you are - you're not gonna beat
the great price. The movies themselves
are classic "B" status and earn about
three stars each. The movies are presented
in full screen with English dubbing.
As for the movies, they include Gamera's
1st, 2nd and 4th movies (but are placed
on the disc out of order for some reason.)
Anyway, the movies are all intertaining;
my personal favorite being War of the
Monsters, Gamera's second movie.
The box also contains some nice interior
notes about the films (a consideration many
collections such as this omit) and a great
black & white fold out of the big Turtle
himself. I was delighted with this
purchase - recommended!
P.S - For any Speed Racer fans out there,
you might be interested in knowing that several old
Gamera and Godzilla flicks had English voices from
members of Speed's show. You can sit and say to
yourself "hey, thats Trixie's voice or that's Speed!"
I always prefere original scores and sound tracks, but
at least the English is made more fun to listen too:)
Gammera, Barugon and Viras.......2005-07-03
GAMMERA THE INVINCIBLE(1965-Rated G)
Soviets and Americans clash bringing down a bomber on ice which explodes and awakens a giant turtle called Gammera who rampages Tokyo.
WAR OF THE MONSTERS(1966)
A giant lizard called Barugon attacks Tokyo but luckily Gammera returns to Earth and battles the overgrown reptile.
DESTROY ALL PLANETS(1968)
Now Gammera is changed to Gamera. Anyway, aliens attack Earth but are counterattacked by Gamera which forces them to release a giant squid which attempts to kill the reptilian hero.
Afterward:GAMMERA THE INVINCIBLE and WAR OF THE MONSTERS deserve 4 stars and are good and exiting movies. DESTROY ALL PLANETS is just as exiting but overuses stock footage and is to campy and gets only 3 stars.

A monster mash........2007-03-30
It's been a long time since I seen this movie. Way back in the 70s. Originally, AIP plan to show this film at drive ins, but release it directly to TV instead. The film is awesome. especelly when Barugon ate a guy trying get away with a diamond that was to lure the monster into the lake. This is the second entry in the Gamera series. I recomened this movie to all monster movie fans.
ALPHA DVD VERSION.......2006-12-08
AKA GAMERA VS. BARUGON THIS IS THE FIRST GAMERA MOVIE SHOT IN COLOR, BUT IT'S REALLY BARUGON WHO IS THE STAR OF THIS ONE! GAMERA APPEARS EARLY IN TINTED FLASHBACK SCENES FROM THE ORIGINAL B&W GAMERA FILM & THEN QUICKLY RETURNS TO EARTH FROM THE COSMOS TO BLOW UP A DAM. NEXT WE GET A STORY ABOUT 3 TREASURE HUNTERS WHO THINK THIS BARUGON-EGG IS SOME GEM WORTH A FORTUNE. ONE TREASURE HUNTER DIES FROM A SCORPION BITE & THE 3RD TRIES TO KILL THE 2ND & MAKE OFF WITH THE GEM. ANYWAY, BARUGON HATCHES & GOES ON THE EXPECTED DESTRUCTIVE RAMPAGE. TREASURE HUNTER #2 & HIS ISLAND/NATIVE? GIRLFRIEND RETURN AS DOES GAMERA FOR THE FINAL MONSTER BATTLE!!! TREASURE HUNTER SCUMBAG #3 & BARUGON GET THEIRS & ALL ENDS WELL...
PLAYED STRAIGHT, NO LITTLE KIDS TO GET IN THE WAY, THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD MONSTER BASH WHICH I'VE WATCHED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS...
HOWEVER...THE ALPHA DVD IS REALLY PRETTY BAD WITH WASHED-OUT COLOR. I COMPARED IT TO THE EXTENDED PLAY VHS I HAVE " GAMERA VS. BARUGON " & THE VHS WINS HANDS DOWN. IT'S PACKAGED AS CELEBRITY HOME ENTERTAINMENT(1987) UNDER THEIR " CELEBRITY JUST FOR KIDS " SERIES WHICH FEATURES OTHER GAMERA FILMS AS WELL. THE COLOR HERE IS SO MUCH BETTER (AFTER I'VE ADJUSTED THE TRACKING). THIS IS THE SANDY FRANK EDITION WHICH I UNDERSTAND HAS AWFUL DUBBING( SEEMED JUST FINE TO ME-I LIKED THE INANE LINES ), BUT IS THE MORE VIOLENT UNCUT VERSION. WHATEVER...
ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT MY OLD VHS WAS LIGHT YEARS BETTER THAN WHAT ALPHA HAS OUT THERE ON DVD.
Fire vs. Ice.......2006-10-03
War of the Monsters is the second film that Gamera stars in. A new monster called Barugon is released from an egg, mistaken for an opal by treasure hunters, and brings death and chaos. Barugon seems to be a creature of cold and ice which makes it harder for Gamera to defeat. After all the giant turtle has problems moving when it gets too cold.
The plot is a tad slow moving but at least makes more sense than most monster movies. Gamera is not seen as good or as a Hero. He is just seen as energy hungry creature focusing on a new source of energy - Barugon. The extras are very interesting. The posters used in Europe seem to say Godzilla instead of Gamera. First film of Gamera in color.
Solid Monster Movie- Dreadful DVD quality.......2006-07-22
I grew up watching Gamera movies on Detroit TV. They'd have Gamera week and Godzilla week and I'd race home from public school to watch em all.
Now as Gamera went I wasn't as big a fan. The whole flying turtle thing and too many pathetic little kids in the story lines really turned me off. BUT recently I bought the 90's Gamera box set and was blown away! The 90's movies are really good (too bad they didn't make a part 4). And thus wanting more I decided to take a trip down memory lane and wander the mine field of cheesy hokey cruddy Gamera films. I started with the first one which is totally ruined by American actor scenes which just make an already stupid movie EVEN worse. I checked out Gamera vs Monster X cause it was my all time childhood fave (the sub scene). It's OK but leans towards kiddy film heavily, although the cheese factor pulls it from a complete nose dive and several clever scenes keep it above water too. Nervous about trying more I decided to read the other reviews and most people rated War of The Monsters rather highly (one I don't remember all that well) so I gave it a shot- hell, Alpha DVD's are cheap as dirt (with equal quality). And I got to say I was happily surprised. Why??
A) Solid SCI-FI adult story line! Some loopy stuff but hey it's about a flying turtle damn-it.
B) Good action scenes. Loads of monster crushing stuff and decent human action as well.
C) Plausible evil monster. Okay the rainbow ray is a bit sissy and the baseball bat tongue is really odd. But he grew up quick and mean. GOOD human villian too!
D) NO stupid little kids. I repeat NO stupid little kids.
E) Hot chick in lead role. Got to like that.
F) Good soundtrack- no kiddy music!
So why not 5 stars??
A) Not enough Gamera. When it ends you realize Gamera just wasn't in there enough to make it a 5. Good- but needed more.
B) BAD special effects- good enough for B-Movie fans. Better than "Reptilicus" but still goofy bad and loads of wires. Monster blood looked like chocolate milk (maybe the reason why is located in C).
C) Pathetic Alpha Video quality dub. For three seconds the colour goes perfect and you realize why you are squinting your eyes. AND for those few seconds you realize how good this movie could look if done properly. Especially the island dancer scenes! Come on Alpha Video it doesn't have to suck this BAD!!
In conclusion: Solid Monster movie. Dreadful DVD quality dub. But a keeper in my B-Movie collection. I have a feeling this movie may last longer than Monster X (oh those stupid little kids! And all that kiddy music. Gotta remember the telephone poles in the ears and the sub scene... cheese factor- cheese factor- plugging hydro wires into his heart by taking a sub into his mouth- classic cheese).
Bad print of good monster movie.......2006-05-15
"War of the Monsters" is a sad print (grainy, the ends cropped so sometimes the monsters' heads barely peek into either side of the frame) of a quite good monster movie. The human characters in this one actually inhabit a decent story of their own, and have some interaction with the monsters, rather than being mere spectators. Our beloved Gamera and his enemy for this battle Barugon are both cleverly conceived and well realized. There are no little kids in this one, which some will see as a blessing.

the final conflict.......2007-05-18
This movie was the last Gamera movie to be made that I know off. When a young girl who's parents were killed during the first Gayos invasion in a flashg back see swear revenge gamera. The ayos are heading to tokeyo by the millions. Enter in a new monster irish who bounds with this anger stircken child. Can Gamere save the cild and all of tokeyo once again from utter desturction find out in the thrilling conclusion. There are about twent of thedse movies but only six have been converted to DVD. I have the original gamera together on one disk along with attack of thegiant leaches and attack of the blood beast. To get the other films you might have to get them on DVD. There is also suppodedly was a movie made when Gamera fights godzilla but have yet toi find it unless it's that stupid slammy brothers movie. If I here about any new Gamera movies in developement or for release I will inform you.
Terrific Movie: 4.5/5.......2006-02-25
You may hear many monster movies get chopped up by critics, but not this one. Five different critics who exprlained that they despise kaiju flicks gave it over four out of five stars. Yes, the plot is incredibly slow, but Gamera's appearences make it all worth the ride. Two thumbs up!
The King of Kaiju.......2005-12-08
The Gamera trilogy comes to a close in this beautiful movie. Incredible special effects are seen throughout the movie. This movie is considered "kaiju" movies at its best. From the beautiful scene of Iris rising out of the clouds to fly in the night's sky to the quiet burning of the buildings in Tokyo, the movie does a good job at setting the moods. A dream come true. Kaneko's masterpiece that even rivals to be better than the Godzilla movies. From the beginning to the end, a real treat to watch and hear. Stay and listen to the beautiful song at the end credits written by the director Kaneko himself specifically for this movie! Amazing, simply amazing. Word of caution, watch the first two movies of the series first because it is a continual story and it could be hard to fully understand the plot if you haven't seen the other two. This is not a childish movie, this movie is more mature. Gamera is a friend to children no more!
BREATHTAKING!! BEST FILM EVER.......2005-05-20
Their's thousands of words that can describe GAMERA3, none can match G3. Not spectacular, masterpeice, breathtaking, brilliant, best, loveable not any of those words even come close. This film is one that people kaiju fans or not should watch. From the special effects to the music to the human drama even the monsters are belevable and realistec.I even felt compassion towards gamera and ayana.BUY IT NOW YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS FILM EVER!!
OK but story wise first two were better.......2005-04-06
After seeing the first two I was disappointed with the third installment of Gamera. Yes the special effects are BETTER but the story is really weird and Gamera is hardly in it! He shows up at the end for some brutal fighting. What got me the most was the enemy monster which was built up as really creepy and gross- which is great in an alien-esq sci-fi horror movie but here it just drags on and on. What got me into these movies in the first place was that they rewrote Gamera's back story as a lost bio-weapon from Atlantis which I thought was a fantastic idea but this movie waunders way away from that into the supernatural- however they left plenty of room to pull it all back into place with a fourth movie but it look like this is the last one. Plus bringing back the flying lizards birds from the first movie was a drag as they really weren't all that great the first time around. I bought the 3 in one box set which is a great deal and should be grabbed at all cost and I have enjoyed it thoroughly but the third although better special effects wise is the weaker story wise. WE NEED A FOURTH MOVIE TO MAKE IT ALL GOOD!! GET BACK TO ATLANTIS!

even better than Guardian of the universe.......2007-05-18
This year movie celebrated it's 11th anniversary since it was firt released. About its 2 year anniversary on DVD. I first bought this movie along with Gamera 3 the revenge of Irish back in middle of 05 when I was living with my ex roomate before he moved out. In this movie it has been several months since Gamera first appeared and saved the world from Gyaos in the previous films. The girl who oriignally talked to gamera is back but as a secondary character with a small part in this movie. When and alien life form named Legion invades earth leave and carnage of destruction and death in its path as it feed of of fiber opetics to nsurvive. Once again gamera must do battle with millions of small legion and then onbe huge gigantic Legionb about 100 meter tall and long. This enemyt has destuctive new weapons. From his lighting energy beam blasted to super hot laer proton beam strucute like wipes. Can Gamera save all of Japan from utter destuction again or has the might turtle meet his match. find out in the thrilling conclusion. Even though this gamera is wossier and not omega beffy as the original gamera from the very first movie who was completly invulerable and could not be hurt by anyhting not even fall out from atomic weapons. The movie makes up with a weaker monster with good fighting scens and phonimal speciall effects and music. This movie should be for kids 13 and up due to heavy scifi violence, thematic elements, frequent gorry images, and intensity.
Alittle ways from the first Gamera.......2007-02-25
The plot is basic monsters fighting, some drama with the people. The special effects and monsters are better with some pretty good make up. The plot has a few flashbacks from things that happened to a young girl that drive the movie, as well as help build the characters. Enjoyed it myself and would say check it out if you like..
A Large Step Back In The Trilogy.......2006-02-17
There is no way to deny it. The Gamera Trilogy is one of the best sagas in movie history. "Gamera: GOTU" was top notch and "Gamera 3" was one of the greatest monster movies period. But sadly, this film falls short of the greatness. Instead of making long paragraphs, I'll make a list of what worked and what didn't.
WHAT WORKED
-Gamera, for one. I loved the big green man. Unlike the first of the series, this movie shows the creature with heart at its purest, not needing to have people describe it. You really saw that he's not a monster or a "best friend". He's a being that cares, and will take out anyone who gets in his way at the same time. Much like 2005's King Kong.
-Legion. She was a cool yet simplistic arch nemesis that could scare the snot out of anyone.
-The acting was good. You really saw within the characters that we passed up before.
-At times, the special effects were top notch. Especially the flying Legion scene and the appearing Gamera scene.
What DIDN'T WORKED
-The plot was very easy to follow, but it became incredibly confusing when they had random people explain it, which causes even more confusion.
-Yeah, I said the effects were at times top notch, but they later looked like they were rushed and out of place.
-The fights between Gamera and Legion were as dull as just shooting at eachother with little interest.
-I was bored to tears during the human scenes. Unlike the people scenes in G3, these scenes just had talking and talking with little emotion(minus the scene where the camera man goes sober).
-There was actually no purpose of this movie as far as the franchise goes. It could have just been erased and there's be no problem whatsoever.
So overall, in my opinion, this is the low point of a great series. Now, if you are collecting the entire trilogy, then this review probably change your mind. But as far as entertainment goes, look at the other two.
Am I the only one that heard this stuff???.......2006-02-01
I have loved Godzilla and the like since I saw my 1st Godzilla movie at a drive in when I was in 2nd grade (Godzilla vs Megalon; and I still love that drop kick!). My 4 yo son loves Godzilla movies and I'm very proud of the fact that he has latched on to Godzilla instead of the big purple money machine that is pushed off on so many kids.
When I found out about Gamera recently I started ordering some of the movies from Amazon w/o having seen them before. I bought the mid 90's Gamera trilogy as part of this new "influence" for my little boy. I try to screen this stuff before he watches it and turns out he's gonna need more body hair before he sees this one.
However; my review title refers to the 2nd English audio track that's on the DVD. After looking through the posted reviews I only saw one other note mentioning the "hillbilly" audiotrack and that review listed it as an extra. I stumbled onto this audio track and absolutely laughed like a crazed, white faced, purple suited villan!!!
There is a harmonica used for the incidental music, there's the same voice that keeps shouting out in times of chaos "HOLY CRAP", there's the pseudo-Clinton army guy, and enough toilet humor to make Matt Stone and Trey Parker proud.
As other reviews have noted, the movie is good for what it is, but watching it with the "hillbilly" audio track puts this movie in a class all it's own; and you gotta see & hear this stuff!!! For a 36yo guy that lives within 5 mi of the Appy Trail, I'm lucky enough to hear this verbal masacre of the language all the time. And yes many of the people that live in this area talk just like these guys (myself included).
Get the movie & laugh 'til it hurts!!!
Cool.......2005-12-08
A well done monster movie with incredible special effects. This movie doesn't focus on Gamera as much as it does the storyline. Well written and fun to watch, the Gamera movies have come a long way. This Gamera movie gives the Godzilla movies a run for its money and that's not easy to say coming from a huge Godzilla fan. This film gets my kudos. Believe the hype, THIS MOVIE IS EXCELLENT!

Description
Relive the Golden Age of Japanese monster films with this pair of titanic adventures! First, Daiei's fire-breathing, flying turtle Gamera returns to battle a horned beast, Monster X, released from a stone statue moved from Wester Island. Facing off in Osaka, they create a demolition derby of destruction you won"t soon forget! Then Nikkatsu Studios takes its turn in the monster sweepstakes with Monster from a Prehistoric Planet, made as Dai Kyoju Gappa and also shown as Gappa: The Triphibian Monster. In this loose, unofficial remake of Gorgo, a baby reptile-bird monster is captured and taken to Tokyo where its agitated mother and father come looking to reclaim their offspring!
Customer Reviews:
Good two-fer for monster movie fans.......2007-01-19
Great double-feature for a dull evening: two classic "guys in rubber suits" monster films featuring much destruction of toy cities, improbable plot twists, and hysterically bad dialogue. Fun for kids, and depending on the amount and quantity of intoxicants or whether you're just plain odd, for adults too.
Surprisingly fun Gamera flick, but Gappa..........2006-02-25
Gamera flicks have rarely been known to be good movies, but Gamera vs. Jiger (or Monster X) isn't half bad...of course, it isn't half good, either, but it's entertaining enough for the kiddies, and has some rather creative elements, but, like all of the Showa Gamera R1 dvd's, the transfer is absolutely horrid, but the dubbing is only somewhat painful. Get it to complete your collection.
As for Gappa, aka "Monster From a Prehistoric Planet," it's a nifty extra treat for kaiju fans...if you enjoy absolutely awful dubbing and rather sub-par SPFX. The Gappa monsters themmselves are basically combinations of Godzilla and Rodan, but they're still pretty creative (especially their roars).
Overall, a decent disc, considering that it's the best that we're going to get here in the US.
Not The Best in Showa Gamera Series.......2005-12-08
The movie is slow and it takes a while before it gets going, but when it does, the movie is pretty good. It has a classic scene when Gamera puts electric poles in his ears to block out the high frequency noise. It's funny to watch him fight Jiger a.k.a. Monster X with electric poles sticking out of his ears! Overall pretty good, but definitely not the best out of the Showa series.
Meh.......2005-11-12
I'll do each in different catagories.
GAMERA VS. MONSTER X
When a group of ignorent explorers accidentally unleash a demon powerful enough to destroy all life, Gamera must confront the beast and stop the end of the world. Jiger(aka Monster X) is a cool foe of Gamera's and can be safely said as one of Gamera's much tougher opponents. The dubbing is aweful, the acting is mediocre, and there are a few obvious fight mess ups unedited(when Gamera's head starts to lean offly far to the right in the second battle), but the movie has a solid outline and is very creative compared to some of the movies in the saga. Definately one of the better Showa Gamera films. OVERALL: A
MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET
The Japanese remake of "Goro", the film is about exxplorers who uncover a baby dinosaur and bring it back to Tokyo. The baby monster's parents wake up, realizing the baby is gone, and head for Japan in rage. This film is very droll and long. The two parent monsters are ok, but the baby Gappa is hidious and pathetic. Another Minya, if you will. The destruction parts are cool, though. OVERALL: D+
DVD
This DVD is fairly poor in quality. There are sadly no extras and the video is mediocre. Not much of a DVD. The audio is pretty good, unlike the video. OVERALL: C-
IN TOTAL
This is not the best DVD out there. If you are going to buy this, get it only for the Gamera film. OVERALL: C
Gamera vs Monster X.......2005-09-19
My favorite kaiju movie I almost forgot, I saw this movie once when I was a child & liked it. But they never gave it again. I finally found it here at Amazon. And was taken back to happier times {Ah to be young and oblivious} But I digress. This Dvd has good audio quality and good video quality, on a scale of 1 - 10 I give it a 9. Only thing that sucks is after I sent for it I found it at the Dollar Tree dollar store, as a double feature with War of the monsters.

Gamera, Japan's favorite jet-propelled giant flying turtle, was Daiei's child-friendly answer to Toho's Godzilla franchise. This decidedly juvenile staple of the 1960s became a modest success, but those early features, with cut-rate special effects and gooey child stars, rate little beyond camp nowadays. With such a legacy, his 1995 rebirth Gamera, Guardian of the Galaxy, is a delightful surprise. Now taking over the franchise, Toho comes through with an old-fashioned giant monster adventure in candy colors with excellent special effects and an attitude that straddles serious science fiction and outrageous spectacle. Gamera, still a hero of the people, is given a mythic back-story and a foe of apocalyptic dimensions, the flying people-eating lizard Gyaos that the government, in all its misguided wisdom, decides to protect while attacking the misunderstood Gamera. There's romance (featuring the best come-on line ever: "Someday I'd like to show you around a monster-free Tokyo"), bureaucratic satire, and a well-meaning environmental message, but that's all gravy to the movie's meat: giant monsters battling it out in the traditional Tokyo war zone, laying waste to acres of lovingly detailed miniatures. That's what Japanese monster movies are all about. --Sean Axmaker

Return of The Kaiju.......2006-09-16
Mega-turtle Gamera sleeps in the deep and is summoned forth by a girl who retains a sympathetic connection through a comma-shaped rock pendant, to do battle with an old enemy in Gyaos, the monster pterodactyl who feasts on human beings. Gamera's whereabouts are divulged when a team of oceanographers discover an island which conceals a mystical megalith encribed with actual Futhark runes, describing the prophesy of the monsters returning when the world is in perceived environmental peril.*
The little humans are predictably afraid of the monsters, and seek to destroy both of them, despite Gamera's heroic inclinations, but after awhile, they realize Gamera is the only great beast who can battle Gyaos, who has set up nest atop Tokyo Tower in the middle of the city. Instead of luring the giant away, the seemingly idiotic military deem to destroy the pterodactyl right there amidst the metropolitan surroundings. Their battle destroys the city at the cost of only a few human lives {in which Gyaos treats herself to "canned human" as she peels away subway trains, shaking the residents into her mouth}.
With the help of the life-force of the girl, Gamera gathers up enough energy to defeat Gyaos, which takes them from the city to the ocean, and even into outer space. Though Gamera receives some potent blows, thus also effecting the girl, he prevails in the end, with a nod of recognition.

a new turtle.......2005-12-28
After years of not being on Shuesko kaneko decided to direct a brand new gamera series(Yeah!)In the beggining a giant rock is in the middle of the ocean.A man is in a store looking for food for a man when a young japense girl named asangi is the mans daughter.so they dig up some of the rock and an ancient stone is inside of it.At japan mutant bats/birds are attacking japan.
The More Mature Gamera.......2005-12-08
This first in the trilogy pits Gamera against his long time and fan favorite foe Gyaos. The Gamera series takes a more mature tone and drops the childish themes the series was originally known for. This movie along with the following two focuses on adults and has nothing to do with children. Good film with excellent storyline and acting. This probably has the weakest special effects out of the trilogy, but that doesn't mean that the fx are terrible, quite the opposite, the special fx are amazing, nothing extremely special about it. A kaiju must, those who are not even Gamera fans and only Godzilla fans will really enjoy this movie and become fans of the giant turtle. It did it to me! Like the Godzilla movies, the story is completely different from the original series of the 60's, 70's and 1980. Incredible movie, but the best was yet to come! Kaneko is the best kaiju director of our time and this was his first time directing a movie like this, he would later go on to direct the other two and also direct Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All Out Attack which is considered one of the best Godzilla movies of all time! Fantastic movie, believe me, go get a copy and see it! You won't be disappointed!
Good but not great like everyone says........2005-08-23
Godzilla, a great movie was released in 1954, it was about a giant monster that attacked japan, it was a success, in japan and america, many succesful sequals were inevitable. so naturally everyone wanted to dublicate the success, even countries like korea gave it a try with yonggary(a overall terrible film).most were just one shots that were forever outshined by godzilla films but one series was fairly succesful, still nothing compared to the godzilla movies of the time, it was gamera a giant dectructive turtle that was a "friend to all children". It lasted from 65 to about 72 and was still very crappy and only lasted because of its appeal to children. then in 1995 gamera guardian of the universe was released and completely revamped the series ignoring even the original(something only one or two godzilla movies have tried, all other current ones regard the original and use it as a cruch for its own success) it also didnt rely on children either it was very refreshing to many, but it still has its problems. people praise it for having computer generated missles instead of just fire cracker looking things like godzilla movies of the time used, but the missles still look extremely fake, they have like no detail. this film also used a CG fire ball for gamera unlike godzilla movies of the nineties that still used 2-d animated looking lasers, but the monster gaos still has this bad 2-d effect for its non CG laser. the monster action is also a little dull. but it is still good taking in the fact that it was the first monster movie to use these better methods. so I gave it a four out of five. I will review its sequels as soon as possible.
ONE TOUGH TURTLE.......2005-06-18
I've always liked Gamera. His early films were a little silly, but they had a certain charm. It's inevitable that Gamera gets compared to Godzilla, and I think that's a real shame. Both are great monsters with very different styles. Godzilla is the Terminator of the kaiju scene. He's an unstoppable force with very little finesse. But Gamera is the kung fu master of giant monsters. Like watching a Jackie Chan film, you never know what quite to expect.
This first film of the new series is damn impressive. The story is clever. And Gamera's new origin makes him a good guy, so we're rooting for him in a way we rarely get to with Godzilla. But what makes or breaks a kaiju film for me is the fights.
This has some great ones, full of twists and turns. More than once did I wait in sheer suspense as I wondered how Gamera would defeat his foe, and I was blown away with his eventual triumph. (Hope that doesn't ruin the movie, but I assumed everyone already knows he's gonna win in the end.)
The next two films in this series are every bit as worthwhile. So I say it's a big universe. Big enough for Godzilla and Gamera to coexist peacefully. Of course they are giant monsters, and monsters tend to fight.
Gamera vs Godzilla? Never gonna happen. But wouldn't it be cool?
