Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

Tom Hanks's debut as a writer and director is a lively, affectionate account of the shooting-star career of a forgotten (fictional) '60s pop-rock band called The Wonders--as in "one-hit wonders." Hanks plays the manager of the group, which includes drummer Guy "Sticks" Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) who works the floor at his parents' appliance store in Erie, Pennsylvania; Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech), the talented and temperamental lead singer and songwriter; Lenny (Steve Zahn), the goofy guitarist; and Ethan Embry as a geeky little fellow identified in the cast list only as "The Bass Player." The movie traces their meteoric rise and fall, from cutting their first record, to going on tour with a Phil Spector/Motown-type revue, to the internal tensions that lead to the band's disintegration, which comes when they fail to follow up their smash hit single, "That Thing You Do!" And that song, by the way, is so catchy it would definitely have been a hit in 1964--and deserves to be one today. This delightful movie would make a great double-bill with Allison Anders's wonderful Grace of My Heart. --Jim Emerson
Description
Tom Hanks writes, directs and co-stars in this refreshing, big-hearted comedy that captures the overnight triumph of an American rock band during the glory days of rock and roll.

GREAT MOVIE INTERESTING DIRECTOR'S CUT TOO!.......2007-07-03
This is one of the few times that an extended version of a good movie is worth buying. The director's cut is very interesting and makes some scenes much easier to understand. I love the original cut of the film, but it is nice to have both on this 2 disc set. The extra features are cool too! Add a great transfer and you have a worthy ungrade!
Original better than the Director's Cut.......2007-06-27
Since I really like this movie, I enjoyed seeing the scenes that were deleted. Its a good thing they were deleted though, as the movie is much better without them. For instance, I'm glad they took out Tom Hanks' gay boyfriend.
I didn't watch the DVD right away, and when I did, parts of the movie had abnormal/undesirable intensity of color. The people's faces were almost orange in some scenes. Of course by the time I noticed this it was past the 30 days return policy. So I recommend you watch your DVD right away and return it if defective.
Wonderful DVD.......2007-06-27
I recieved the product as described and it was just great! Wonderful response. Great shipper!
Loved it!.......2007-06-21
If you are a fan of the original, you will love this new Director's Cut. The 30+ minutes of never-seen-before footage makes for a whole new movie experience, rewarding the viewer with a previously not seen insight into the meteoric rise and fall of The Wonders.
That Thing I Love!.......2007-06-20
This movie has all aspects of a Great film. Lots of humor, awesome music and it remains upbeat throughout most of it. I have enjoyed this movie since I was ten years old and it has remained my favorite of all time. The lovely Liv Tyler doesn't hurt it either. Anyone would be lucky to see this classic.

A baseball comedy and slob comedy rolled into one, this one actually works as entertainment, if not as a piece of cinematic mastery. James Gammon is the has-been manager hired to lead the last-place Cleveland Indians whose owner wants them to lose so she can sell them. But the team of has-beens and never-wases that he assembles (including Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes) develops a sense of pride and turns the team around. There's plenty of rowdy humor about sex, race, and whatever else they can make fun of. Look for Rene Russo (in her first film role) as Berenger's romantic interest; Snipes also had his first showy role as Willie Mays Hayes, the team's base-stealing ace. --Marshall Fine

Funniest sports movie ever!.......2007-06-27
This movie is my all time favorite sports comedy. I have watched this movie over and over with the same results, tears coming out of my eyes. I was happy to find it on Amazon after going to Blockbuster and being told it was only available on VHS and not DVD. If you like baseball then you will love this movie.
Best Sports Comedy Ever.......2007-06-09
This movie is a classic. They don't make good movies like this anymore. Great story line, great casting, and a happy ending. Baseball fan or not, you need to check this out. If you've already seen it, buy it anyway. I've seen it 100 times and could watch it 100 more.
Top five.......2007-06-08
I'd place this comedy in the top five of good baseball movies (probably at #5). Everyone in it seems to be having fun, and that always helps the audience to have fun, too.
Major League.......2007-06-03
Funny movie. It had been years since I had seen it and it was great to see it again.

Customer Reviews:
I had to wait 24 years to see this movie.......2007-06-25
When I had 5 years old I saw some trailers in 1982 when some guy lose his head and the head run. I can't believe what hapenned and i had about 2 days that I can't sleep well.
I never knew the name of that movie, until talking with an older friend in 2005 he told the name... The Thing. Oh my god !!! I ran to buy this movie. I eliminated all the fears from all this years.
This is a great movie, a great history, Kurt Russel rocks.
Thanks Mr. Carpenter to accept this remake of "The thing from another world" and thanks to give the principal role to Kurt Russel.
U.S. Outpost #31, Antarctica, 1982--Twelve men are commissioned to gather physical and natural science data. It is the dead of winter. With six months of darkness ahead of them, they uncover the find of the century. Of a thousand centuries.
If only they could put it back.
Paranoia Given Flesh.......2007-06-07
It still shocks me that this movie bombed at the box office and very nearly ended John Carpenter's career. The top notch effects, excellent direction and acting, as well as a novel storyline make this a suspense film that eats into your very bones. Kurt Russell and the rest of the cast give soul to the characters who struggle to survive against a foe who threatens to divide and conquer them one by one. The thought behind the thing was mind blowing: an amorphous alien who camouflages itself in order to enter into a group and destroy them from within. If you haven't seen this then you must. You can't be a horror buff without it.
Where's Adrienne Barbeau.......2007-06-02
Where is Adrienne Barbeau in this movie starring Kurt Russell? I guess the review for this would be better if you could get the actors & actresses right
His best movie after Halloween.......2007-05-23
I hope to all that is great that they do NOT make a remake of this movie. You can argue that this was remake but if you read the original story, you will find that this is a closer adaptation of the book than the original movie.
Paranoid at the Pole.......2007-05-23
Making a tautly suspenseful film requires the ingredients of a superbly crafted work such as this science fiction classic. The Thing is not merely a sequence of gore-splashed killings that leaves one wondering who will be the last man standing. Suspense builds, and paranoia grows to fever pitch in this action packed thriller.
Atmospheric conditions of Anarctica and the creepy dark corners in this ice camp provide the canvas for a master to go to work on the nerves. But far worse is in store for the camp dwellers who find themselves out of radio contact with the rest of the world and wondering how they will warn of their horrible discovery. As the story unravels, everyone learns survival has become a game of every man for himself. No one can be trusted in this nightmare at the bottom of the world.
The film opens mysteriously enough. The quiet of the camp is shattered by gunfire from an approaching helicopter. Someone is shooting at what appears to be a fleeing dog. In an unforgiving part of the planet where the pressures are extreme, conclusions are quickly drawn that the helicopter occupants surely have lost their minds. But, the shooter is dropped and the pilot killed in a fiery explosion before questions can get under way. An investigation is promptly mounted and the camp dwellers soon learn from a visit to the neighboring camp that the men in the helicopter were overcome not by insanity but a creature found buried in the ice. But is it soon enough?
Kurt Russell plays the stereotype, no-nonse, machismo hero who ends up leading a struggle to stop "the thing." The cast is populated by a garden variety oddball or two, a few eggheads and the every-man faces that have become customary fare for an alien-eats menu. No character development here. No time for it in this well-paced flick.
The technology is impressive enough that the film's effects hold up even today. This film is gorey by anyone's measure. So, keep a good grip on your popcorn and soda - you're going for a ride.

Amazon.com essential video
With its modest special effects, lean plot, and small cast of lesser stars, this 1951 thriller remains a sturdy blueprint for fusing horror and science fiction. The formula has been employed countless times since, fleshed out with more extensive and elaborate production values, and manned by higher profiled marquee names, but the results have yet to improve on The Thing from Another World, Howard Hawks's lone foray into sci-fi.
The story begins as military airmen are dispatched to a remote Arctic research station where scientists have detected the crash of a spacecraft. An effort to retrieve the saucer-shaped vehicle fails, but the team returns to the station with the frozen body of its sole occupant. When the extraterrestrial pilot is accidentally thawed, the crew, headed by a tough-talking pilot (Kenneth Tobey), grapples with a massive, chlorophyll-based humanoid (James Arness) thirsty for blood and in no mood for galactic diplomacy.
Hawks takes only a production credit for this low-budget exercise, but his filmmaking style transcends Christian Nyby's nominal direction: rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue, an ensemble of comrades whose professionalism is tempered by wisecracks, and unsentimental female characters (embodied by feisty romantic interest Margaret Sheridan) recall Hawks's signature works, while propelling the plot over any potential gaps in credibility. It's hardly surprising, then, that The Thing from Another World remains among the most influential science fiction movies ever shot, or that it remains exciting entertainment a half century later. --Sam Sutherland

Make it 3 and a half.......2007-04-11
I love this film- it is well paced and atmospheric and is not afraid to ask difficult questions about the morality of actions. It is, however, very much of its time and that means some wooden acting and ropey special effects - although in general both are of a much higher standard than equivalent productions. It also means some credibility- stretching actions by some of the characters and a rushed finish. It remains amongst the finest sci-fi/horror film ever made though - and whilst the re-make was better - it was not by much.
The Thing from Another World.......2007-03-30
This is the original. The remake is 'The Thing.'
Both movies are great. I suggest that you own both of them and compare.
A classic of its time and genre.......2007-03-30
It was the early 1950's. The military (which, having only a few years previous saved the nation from European fascism) was still held in high esteem and was busily saving the nation from international Communism. The novel and frightening spectre of atomic energy was evident only in the ubiquitous looming threat of "The Bomb" and a lot of people were beginning to wonder if science hadn't gotten out of hand. The possibility of high-tech invasion from afar was never far from the public consciousness.
And then, of course, there were those disturbing reports of strange and elusive aerial objects that evaded our defenses at will and left our armed forces standing flat-footed . . . Everyone was uneasy.
But Hollywood was equal to the challenge.
The motion picture industry's response was a long string of low-budget thrillers aimed chiefly, I think, at the Saturday Matinee crowd but equally appealing to anyone with an imagination. The Saturday early shows would find theatres packed with prepubescents (myself among them) shivering in their boots as a succession of monsters, mutants and extraterrestrial murderers visited mayhem on any civilized enclave larger than a few huts. It was a wonderful time to be a kid.
Some of those productions stretched the credulity even of a ten-year-old, but others were actually well put together, competently directed, and scary as hell even without flashy special effects. "The Thing From Another World" (popularly known just as "The Thing") was among the best of them.
OK - the script didn't call for great depth from the actors, but this was a very plot-driven genre. Film was black and white and so was morality; the characters didn't need to agonize endlessly over their own motivations. In fact they didn't have time to - they'd have been eaten alive by the bad guy if they did. The simplicity of it all is gratifying.
The story in a nutshell: A team of crack Air Force personnel is called to the Arctic to answer a distress call from a group of scientists on a long term project there. The nature of the distress becomes all too evident as the plot unfolds . . . and that's all I'm going to say.
A newer version of this movie was released much later, sometime in the 1980's, I think (or maybe the early 90's?) At any rate, a comparison between the two of them is not appropriate; they are two different genres. In fact, they are two different movies.
If you are one of those poor drudges unimaginative enough to require a visual elucidation of every droop of blood, every spot of gore, then you may not find this movie satisfying. If you are so narrow minded as to be put off by the mores and social customs of a bygone era, sorry, you will probably be too offended to enjoy the show.
But if what you're really interested in is a rollicking good story, then I can hardly offer better advice than that provided by the excited newspaperman reporting the events from that far flung outpost in the snowy north . . .
"Watch the skies! Keep watching the skies!"
And watch this movie, too.
LOVE IT.......2007-02-13
Anyone who likes the old sci-fi and horror films has got to see this one. It was great, suspensful, and wildly entertaining. I mean, how can you beat some bumbling scientists who accidentally unleash an extraterrestrial monster on themselves while they're snowed in in the middle of nowhere? And, of course, you've got the attractive female and male scientist who fall in love. That's a must for these old flix. And the crazy scientist who wants to protect the monster for the sake of research. This one has it all.
Mashall Dillon on a ramage.......2007-02-05
This is is first movie and it is a wonderful cross-over movie during the Science Fiction genre to Horror. It is very well done, considering it is totally inaccurate.
John Carpenter's The Thing was taken from this movie. When you watch it objectivly you can see he kept the same feeling, but updated it. Plus he jump started Kurt Russell's career.
Two thumbs up for you John!

"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!" Those words from the opening song pretty much describe the menu in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Zero Mostel, snorting and gibbering) as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; Mostel and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford, and Buster Keaton, keep the slapstick and the patter perking. The cast also includes the young Michael Crawford as a love-struck innocent. This project landed in the lap of Richard Lester, then one of the hottest directors in the world after his success with the Beatles' films. Lester telescoped the material through his own joke-a-second sensibility, and also ripped out some of the songs from Stephen Sondheim's Broadway score. The result is a pixilated romp and very close to the vaudeville spirit suggested by the title--though anyone with a low tolerance for Zero Mostel's overbearing buffoonery may be in trouble. Oddly enough, amidst all the frenzy, Lester creates a grungy, earthy Rome that seems closer to the real thing than countless respectable historical films on the subject. --Robert Horton

Cornball alacarte.......2007-05-23
Fair to good comedy, but a long way from great comedy. Is it worth the buy ? maybe if your ready for some tall CORN, but definitely not a collectors edition. Buy it once, view it once but it will probably b a longtime before you would view it again, if ever ?
Not all Romans are as stuffy as Cicero.......2007-05-13
I grew interested in Roman history some years ago. A classical scholar friend introduced this movie to me. He said the movie is based on a form of Roman play called the farce. I laughed so hard that I almost failed to keep the dinner down. Jon Pertwee, who played Dr. Who, has a cameo appearance. I especially loved some of the music which just build on the mirth instead of interrupting it. If you think Roman history is all about bloody gladiators and stuffy speeches, watch this movie!
A delicious romp through Rome........2007-05-13
After seeing a local community theater production of this work, my daughter and I decided we had to see what Zero Mostel did with it. We were thoroughly entranced with this. It is funny and has some wonderful songs - Comedy Tonight and Everybody ought to have a maid are two great examples. It is just delightful. We recommend it to all.
Pure Musical Hilarity.......2007-04-22
This movie is by far one of the best comedy musicals of all time. Zero Mostel plays his role as Pseudolus excellently, and the songs that go along with the hilarious antics are amazing. One only needs to listen to the song "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid" and you will be rolling on floor in laughter.
Funny movie.......2007-03-30
Still one of the funniest movies I think I've ever seen. Do yourself a favor and rent it and see if you like it.

Clockers
Based on the riveting bestseller by Richard Price, this 1995 crime drama was directed by Spike Lee with such authority and authenticity that it has the hyper-real quality of a stylized documentary. Fully capturing the thoroughly researched detail of Price's novel, the film focuses on Strike (newcomer Mekhi Phifer), a young, ambitious "clocker"--or drug dealer--who works the streets of his New York housing project, selling drugs for a local supplier named Rodney (played with ferocious charisma by Delroy Lindo). Just as Strike is struggling to get away from his dead-end life of crime, another dealer is murdered in a fast-food restaurant and local detectives (Harvey Keitel, John Turturro) consider Strike the primary suspect. In cowriting the script with novelist Price, Lee uses this murder mystery to explore the plague of guns and black-on-black crime in America's inner cities, in which drugs and death are familiar routines of daily life. The film doesn't pretend to offer solutions, nor does it dwell on the problem with numbing insistence. Rather, this taut, well-acted film takes the viewer into a world often hidden in plain sight--a world where options seem nonexistent for youth conditioned to have little or no expectation beyond a probable early death. Lee and Price are deadly serious in handling this volatile subject (which incorporates racism, powerless law enforcement, and political indifference), but Clockers is also blessed with humor, insight, and humanity. It's one of Lee's most confidently directed films, signaling a creative maturity that Lee continued to develop throughout the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon
Jungle Fever
Spike Lee's 1991 story about an interracial relationship and its consequences on the lives and communities of the lovers (Wesley Snipes, Annabella Sciorra) is one of his most captivating and focused films. Snipes and Sciorra are very good as individuals trying to reach beyond the limits imposed upon them for reasons of race, tradition, sexism, and such. Lee makes an interesting and subtle case that they are driven to one another out of frustration with social obstacles as well as pure attraction--but is that enough for love to survive? John Turturro is featured in a subplot as an Italian American who grows attracted to a black woman and takes heat from his numbskull buddies. --Tom Keogh
Do the Right Thing
Spike Lee's incendiary look at race relations in America, circa 1989, is so colorful and exuberant for its first three-quarters that you can almost forget the terrible confrontation that the movie inexorably builds toward. Do the Right Thing is a joyful, tumultuous masterpiece--maybe the best film ever made about race in America, revealing racial prejudices and stereotypes in all their guises and demonstrating how a deadly riot can erupt out of a series of small misunderstandings. Set on one block in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the hottest day of the summer, the movie shows the whole spectrum of life in this neighborhood and then leaves it up to us to decide if, in the end, anybody actually does the "right thing." Featuring Danny Aiello as Sal, the pizza parlor owner; Lee himself as Mookie, the lazy pizza-delivery guy; John Turturro and Richard Edson as Sal's sons; Lee's sister Joie as Mookie's sister Jade; Rosie Perez as Mookie's girlfriend Tina; Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as the block elders, Da Mayor and Mother Sister; Giancarlo Esposito as Mookie's hot-headed friend Buggin' Out; Bill Nunn as the boom-box toting Radio Raheem; and Samuel L. Jackson as deejay Mister Señor Love Daddy. A rich and nuanced film to watch, treasure, and learn from--over and over again. --Jim Emerson
Mo' Better Blues
With Mo' Better Blues, the story of a young trumpeter's rise to jazz-world stardom, Spike Lee set out to counter Clint Eastwood's cliché-ridden biopic of Charlie Parker in Bird. But the final product, a slick, glossy drama (with hip-hop jazz provided by Gangstarr no less), is just as superficial as the numerous Alger-esque stories of music stardom to which movie audiences are accustomed.
Denzel Washington gives a typically charismatic performance as the trumpeter in question, as does Wesley Snipes as his sax-playing rival. And as with most Spike Lee films, there are numerous solid performers in small roles such as Bill Nunn, Latin-music star Rubén Blades, and comedian Robin Harris. One character, however, attracted unwanted attention: John Turturro's role as an unscrupulous music-industry exec. Critics called the Turturro character, who is at once money hungry, swarthy, and perpetually shrouded in darkness, a classic anti-Semitic caricature. But the charge seems almost irrelevant in Spike Lee's cartoonish, overstylized world of impossibly hunky jazzmen, curvaceous hangers-on, and incessant bebop. --Ethan Brown
Crooklyn
Spike Lee's semiautobiographical, 1994 film about the good and bad times for a Brooklyn family in the '70s has passion and nostalgic good feeling, but it is also a mess of random reflections and arbitrary storytelling. The centerpiece of the movie is a little girl (Zelda Harris) who views the ups and downs of her parents' experiences (mom and dad are played by Delroy Lindo and Alfre Woodard), and who navigates the life of her neighborhood. Lee tosses in a lot of '70s detail (watching The Partridge Family) and other diversions (Harris's journey through suburbia), but he has no master sensibility controlling the flow of it all. The film is more wearying than anything, although bright spots include Lindo's fine performance as a talented man suffering from irrelevance. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Spike Lee - The Man.......2007-06-20
They could have put a movie on the other side of Crooklyn :(, Im still extremely satisfied. This is a piff collection. Spike did a great job capturing the essence (the lighter side) of emotion of every day life living in relative poverty like he did in Crooklyn. Watching these movies made me feel as if I were an invisible character.
You really get ur money's worth.......2007-05-14
I really like this collection, even though I thought it should have included his first work, school daze, instead of Clockers, u get five dvd's for the price of 1.
Good selection!.......2007-03-21
The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not a 5 is because not everyone will be happy with all 5 Films in this Collection. Point blank is that this a must get. You cannot beat the price for a good selection of quality American films. Very satisfied!
YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!.......2007-03-16
5 CLASSIC FILMS BY ONE OF THE BEST AFRICAN AMERICAN DIRECTORS OF ALL TIME FOR $20.00! IF YOU THINK THIS ISN'T A GREAT DEAL THAN OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM! MO BETTA BLUES IS ONE OF THE MOST WELL PUT TOGETHER PIECES AND IF YOU ENJOY THE FILMS I SUGGEST LISTENING TO THE ACTUAL SOUNDTRACKS.
A Fantastic Collection That Is Very Affordable.......2007-03-12
There are a few artists who come to mind - Peter Max, for example - who strongly believe that their craft should be accessible to fans at any income level. Simply, art is solely not defined by its high price tag.
With the release of the Spike Lee Joint Collection (Clockers/ Jungle Fever/ Do the Right Thing/ Mo` Better Blues/ Crooklyn), the legendary film maker is making a very strong statement in the movie industry on producing an extraordinary product at an affordable price.
This is Economics 101 at its simplest, five movies for the cost of a couple of movie tickets at most theaters. It is as much a collection for fans of Lee's career as it an outstanding sampler for those just getting into his style.
And it begs a very important question; if Lee and Max - along with others - can do it, why isn't this practical approach done industry-wide within the arts?

This absolute winner, based on a stage play by Jonathan Harvey and adapted by him, is a kind of enchanted, urban slice-of-life tale about a gay teen, Jamie (Glen Berry), who is in love with the boy next door, Ste (Scott Neal). Hampering Jamie's progress on the romantic front is his fear that his mother (Linda Henry) will find out, as well as concern over complicating Ste's existing problems. Beautiful Thing is a relationship movie, to be sure, but that description doesn't really describe the buoyant tone of this British television production. Democratic in its inclusive regard for each character (whether camera-pretty or not), the film--well-directed by Hettie Macdonald--is full of surprises. Chief among them is the terrific personality of Jamie's mum, a strong and independent woman who truly worries over and adores her son. But this is a movie involved in a kind of happy dialogue with itself: the tunes of Mama Cass, for instance, play a part in both the story and overall ambience, while a strategic placement of the Rodgers and Hammerstein chestnut "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" during an act of love is fun and exciting. --Tom Keogh
Description
A pair of teenage boys growing up in a working-class neighborhood become aware of their homosexuality. While both were vaguely aware they might be gay, neither had ever acted on their impulses. Once they decide that they're attracted to each other, neither is sure just what to do. Winner of 4 International Film Festival Awards.

beautiful thing.......2007-06-02
enjoyed the story. only problem was the strong accent. difficult to hear the sound. didnt understand a word from the black girl though it was well acted. loved the ending.
Beautiful Thing, impossible to understand.......2007-05-29
This movie is very difficult to understand, is spoken in a British jargon which is impossible to follow. It does not have any subtitles or a better translation to an American Standard English. I recommend buying it only if you live in the UK and understand their jargon.
snap.......2007-05-24
A good coming of age/romantic comedy. The Brit humor is always good for a laugh.Would watch this one again just to catch all the one liners.
I never tire of seeing this movie. It IS a beautiful thing!.......2007-05-06
As a gay man, I have to say the plot of this film takes me back to a time when I first started to find myself and, eventually, came out. "Some things are just hard to say", says Jamie (one of the teenagers in the film), effectively coming out to his mother. I remember saying that or something not unlike it at the time.
Jamie and Ste live next door to each other, and when Ste's father and brother have physically abused him (an ongoing problem), Sandra (Jamie's mother) takes him in for the night, whereupon he and Jamie begin their self-discovery.
Perhaps my favourite scene is when Jamie and Ste are running through the woods together when they finally stop to begin a long, passionate kiss. It always brings tears to my eyes because I feel so happy for them, not to mention deliriously envious.
I think the gay theme of this film is mild enough as to not offend too many people if they are already open to viewing a film covering such a topic. However, some of the language is quite crude - the "C" word appears a number of times. I've read many American reviewers stating they have trouble with the accent so I suspect British TV and films are not widely shown there (perhaps there is little interest). Being Australian I fortunately have no trouble understanding both accent and colloquialisms.
I've seen plenty of gay films before. Most have not had that great a storyline or lasting feeling to them. Beautiful Thing has genuine effects on the emotions, especially if you can relate to the main characters. It is definitely my favourite film in this genre. I just love it!
Do Something You Won't Regret.......2007-04-02
This movie is awesome! It's definetly a repeat I watched it again and again. Its entertaining to watch and there's great music throughout.

poor spike lee: for 20 years now he has been trying to live up to the promise of this early movie -- but sad to say, two decades down the line, there wasnt as much there as people thought there was. the imagery of the streets (based on the real life howard beach horror) is a trifle too parochial, and the actions of the protagonists just a bit too easy to project before they occur. i honestly can say i didnt like a single person here; in attempting to show their flaws, lee ignores their decency. that aside, there are images that will stay with you a long time -- but as i said earlier, this should have been the heralding of a directorial career, not the peak.
Boycott the Motherf**ker That Don't Like This Film!.......2007-05-08
Sizzling hot! Music by Public Enemy, and a film by the great Spike Lee. And it's all set in the middle of summer, on one of the hottest days ever (Spike would return to this theme again with "Summer of Sam"), and with the coolest cast ever!
Look here, string-cheese head motherf**ker: Rewind it and watch the s**ts again and again! Boycott the motherf**ker who doesn't like this film!
This is a milestone in filmmaking, it's reality...It's the Powers that be!
WAY ahead of its time, speaks to many generations to come, and excellent, awesome filmmaking with never a dull moment.
I would give this film 10 stars if possible...Classic!!
And, that's the truth Ruth!
Powerful Film.......2007-02-16
I remember not saying a word for at least fifteen minutes after watching this film..It was one the most powerful films I've ever seen and makes the viewer reach inside his/herself and examine their attitude toward racism...
spike lee's best flick.......2007-02-03
this mother conjures a time when a new spike lee movie was an event. this movie packs more emotion, beauty, exuberance and life in every minute than 99% of the movies coming out of hollywood. the music, the cinematography, the kaleidoscope of viewpoints and characters, the strong sense of place (NYC, of course), the amazing cast...all in the service of an honest, complex look at racism. Lee leaves you with two choices at the end, as symbolized by Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.
at the same time that i praise this wonderful movie, i have to wonder what's happened to spike lee since. mo better blues and jungle fever were interesting but never come close to the impact of this movie. crooklyn is sweet and malcolm x is a great film, but still pale compared to lee's best movie.
so, what IS the right thing?.......2007-01-25
Spike Lee's study of urban racial tensions stirred controversy when it was first released. Did he intend to advocate violence or merely record it as so many have experienced it? At the end of this film powerful quotations from Martin Luther King and Malcolm X support either view. Set in the sultry summer of inner city Brooklyn, nearly every scene in this film crackles with tension. The black neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyevesant is patrolled by white cops, and commercialized by an Italian family pizzeria that has been a mainstay for twenty-five years, and an upstart Korean grocery store. The racial tensions simmer just as much within the black community; there is only derision for a plan to boycott the pizzeria, Da Mayor is part village idiot and part wise elder, and even Mookie (Spike Lee) is caught betweeen allegiance to his black community and his Italian employer. Doing the right thing is sometimes hard not only to do but even to know.

This love story made in 1955 and set against the backdrop of war is a many-splendored thing: it features a drop-dead gorgeous Eurasian doctor seeking meaning in her life (Jennifer Jones), a dashing but married American war correspondent who's macho yet not afraid to declare his love (William Holden), and a couple of murky subplots to give their relationship its oh-what's-going-to-happen-next edge (her Chinese heritage, his wife, the outbreak of the Korean War). One scene builds beautifully upon the next, accompanied by dialogue that often sounds like poetry: "I will make no mistakes in the name of loneliness," the doctor says near the beginning of their relationship. The movie also makes few mistakes as it combines thoughtful words with Oscar-winning costumes to tell its tale. It even leaves you with a hummable tune--the Academy Award-winning title song--as you reach for the Kleenex. --Valerie J. Nelson
Description
Newsman Mark Elliott is an American war correspondent temporarily staying in Hong Kong during the Korean War. While there he meets and pursues a beautiful Eurasian Doctor. But when they begin to fall in love, their friends and families pressure them to stop the cross cultural relationship.

Love is a Many Slendored Thing.......2007-05-17
In view of the fact the movie on the DVD was produced sometime ago, I found the DVD I purchsed from Amazon was perfect in all respects. I would
advise anyone interested in the movie to purchase it.
.......Greatest....LOVE/STORY ....on ...Film, Indeed!!.......2007-05-06
....You won't ever find a more sincere or sensitive love story on film the likes of this one...it is singular...to its time in history [rampant prejudice-war-interracial love] all frowned upon by society the world over..it was a harbinger/film coming on like a typhoon that crashed through the angst of interracial love [then]...as we have accepted it and it is commonplace today...a wonderful extra feature is the talk-over by: Sylvia Stoddard-Michael Lonzo-John Burlingame that spells out the veracity related to the social aspects [then], that some viewers may overlook while taking in Jennifer Jones in that aqua/blue Chinese dress...WoW...and Bill Holden's captivating star appeal..screen/writer John Patrick at his very best makes all the sense to the message of this film on location in Hong Kong....add the utterly distinctive music arrangement by Alfred Newman, nonpareil...good strong character/supporting actors and actresses permeate to blend this entire love/story in the Far East to every viewer's rapt anticipation, and with the cusp of war breaking out in Korea adds to the whole engrossing story unfolding there in those times of yesteryear...a bitter-sweet love story and a haunting love song by Fain & Webster that will never fade away on any windy hill; in fact, the song won the Academy award as best song of the year and deservedly so...just a Terrific movie[DVD].......SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF
Symbolism at its best... .......2007-04-10
This 1955 movie is about the struggle between honor, propriety, cross cultural relationships, and love. The story develops with two people who fall in love. Jennifer Jones plays the part of an Eurasian doctor, a widow, a woman who has resigned herself to the care of others and promises never to allow her heart to open up to another relationship.
William Holden plays newsman Mark Elliott, a dashing correspondent, a gentle and virile man who has the patience and the subtleness to spark the necessary fire for her to allow herself to find new meaning to her life. But, he is a married man.
As she says... "look at the faces of unhappy people who don't have the love we share!" There is much going on around this lovely couple, communism is surfacing all over China, the Korean War calls William Holden away, she travels back to China to visit her family and bravely confronts her relative with the news that she wants to marry out of her own culture, a foreigner, an American. He travels to ask his wife for a divorce, which she at first grants, only to later deny him his freedom.
Throughout the movie we are at the edge of our seat... what will happen next? The dialogue between these two human beings is superb, capturing the struggle and ending in poetic promises of honor and ardent love.
The costumes are simply magnificent as she wears silk Chinese suits, and he... simply continues to capture the hearts of audiences. My favorite part is the symbolism shared by this movie, with butterflies providing the essence of the transformation the characters undergo as they interface and fall in love with one another. And the theme music of this movie is unforgettable... you will find yourself humming away for days after you watch and enjoy... Love is a many splendorous thing!
This DVD offers additional features, and the biography of William Holden alone is enough for us to want to own this classic in our collection. It provides a rare and intimate view of the life of one of Hollywood's greatest actors, allowing us to see his wife and children. Did not know that Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelley, and Stephanie Powers had all been... leading ladies of William Holden... both on screen... and in real life. Don't miss this movie... we cried while watching... and loved every minute of it!
Classic Touching Love Story.......2007-03-09
Jennifer Jones and William Holden are the epitome of CLASS! They are a couple you just continue to root for throughout the movie. The scenery and a peek into a different culture also impressed me. I am so happy this came out on DVD.
"splendid" .......2007-01-28
This was a gift for my mother-in-law and she was thrilled to see this movie again, one of her all time favorites. I think she saw it 3 times the week we got it for her. The quality is great even though it is an old movie.

Prudes, beware! Despite its tendency to take the comedic low road, The Sweetest Thing is a near-perfect product of the new-millennial Hollywood. That's a backhanded compliment, but as a fun-loving Yankee girl's answer to Bridget Jones's Diary, the mainstream pandering of Nancy Pimental's lucrative screenplay is undeniably effective. On the opening soundtrack, Macy Gray's "Sexual Revolution" is a perfect accompaniment to gyrating guy-dumper Christina (Cameron Diaz), whose fear of commitment is tested when she meets Peter (Thomas Jane) and knows he's Mr. Right. With supportive gal-pals Courtney (Christina Applegate) and Jane (Selma Blair), she plots to snag the guy, and the movie's road-trip detour mines gut-busting gold from gags involving incriminating dress stains, oral sex, rotting food, garish clothing, and the simple joys of old-fashioned romance. Perfectly cast, raucously ribald, and conventionally charming, The Sweetest Thing is a schizophrenic comedy, but its dual personalities are irresistibly in synch. --Jeff Shannon

Some giggles but mostly gags..........2007-07-03
I rented this movie when it first came out in 2002. I didn't like it. I just thought it was gross and quite frankly, a bit boring. My two best friends however think its the funniest movie, so they convinced me to watch it again because they thought I'd enjoy it now that I'm older. I did laugh a few times, but again, I just didn't care for it. Christina Applegate is really the only one who made me laugh. She's great. I'm not a Cameron Diaz fan at all. She just annoys me. And its not that I'm a prude either. I like American Pie and The Girl Next Door, ect., but I just can't get into this one. I think you either love it or hate it, and I hated it.
A PUBESCENT DREAM OF AN ADOLESCENT FANTASY ABOUT WHAT ADULT LIVES ARE LIKE. I HOPE........2007-07-01
REALLY BAD CONCEPT, WRITING, ACTING.
BUT STILL, UNORIGINAL, DULL AND INEPT.
I'M SADLY AMAZED THAT A STELLAR TALENT
MZ.DIAZ GOT HERSELF INVOLVED IN THIS MESS.
IT'S A GLORY HOLE OFA MOVIE, GLORIFYING
ALL THAT'S NOT RIGHT WITH AMERICAN CULTURE
TODAY.
THE ULTIMATE CHICK FLICK!!!.......2007-06-01
This is a fun movie of girls that have turned the tables on men and enjoy the upper hand for a bit but then Christina (Diaz) realizes she's ready for more than just fun in her life! Great laughs, good story line, and a very fun movie to watch! One of my all time favorites now!
The funniest movie ever!!!.......2007-05-03
This is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life! When I came across this movie in the cheapo section in the video store I thought it might be cute but I was ill-prepared for the hilarious hijinks of the three main female characters. The situations and dialogue between them are things you could only share with your closest friends. I suppose if you watch this movie with a stick up your butt you might find it offensive, but if you take it in the spirit that it is meant--a light-hearted comedy from the perspective of 3 young modern women--you won't be disappointed! P.S. Get the un-rated edition! I've seen both and the "penis song" in the unrated edition is the best part of the movie!
HILARIOUS!.......2007-04-15
This movie is freaking hilarious!!! When I first saw it I was thinking "oh great.... a chick flick" But it's not! It's a hilarious movie, perfect for guys and girls alike!!! Be ready to laugh.
