George Miller's first entry in the three part series helped boost Gibson to stardom, and showed Hollywood a thing or two about making an explosive action flick on a shoestring budget. The bleak, desolate near-future is intriguingly rendered: the world looks like a junk shop in a desert. The baddies are a dirty, gruesome lot, which only gets the audience more revved when Max goes after them in earnest. Gibson has "star" written all over him. Hyperkinetic stunts punctuate this raw, rugged actioner.

More a first draft than a real classic.......2007-02-25

It's not altogether surprising that Mad Max got such short shrift when it came out Stateside with an unfortunate dubbing job to eliminate the `Strine accents so American International could pretend it was an American film (Mel Gibson suffered perhaps a worse indignity with his screen credit moved to last position, just before the lab credit on the trailers). Much of what people remember and love about Max is delivered in the sequel rather than this first outing. Indeed, at times it feels more like a blueprint than a proper movie and Gibson barely registers in the surprisingly little screen time he has - the villains, who all seem to be doing either premature Danny Huston impersonations or somewhat more timely German New Romantic turns make much more of an impression. Not only do huge sections of the film keep him offscreen, but he makes little impact in his underwritten role when he is on. In many ways, this is just a first low-budget draft of Max's world - civilization hasn't entirely crumbled yet and the precious juice is still flowing even if parts are getting hard to find. Still, the car stunts are good, if somewhat thin on the ground, but this is one case where the sequels are definitely better.

MGM/UA's special edition offers reasonable extras, but they are limited by the non-involvement of George Miller and Mel Gibson and the unavailability of any archive footage. The making of featurette and audio commentary from crew members are the best of the bunch while the Gibson featurette tends to be too much of a puff piece. Despite being listed as the Australian trailer, the theatrical trailer and the accompanying TV spots are all from the US release. Thankfully the original Australian soundtrack to the feature is included on this disc.

All time favourite.......2007-02-16

I remember sneaking into the Forum Theatre in Melbourne as a kid to see this gem (R rated). It is still as good today on the big plasma as back then. The boys come over and watch it every AFL Grand Final day. Glad to see they released this in the States with the original soundtrack. You will be amused to know we in Australia specially purchased your old version to see how it was dubbed. Pretty funny stuff seeing as Mel has a bit of an American accent in the film anyway. Love how it is all shot around where we live in Melbourne. If you liked this, check out Odd Angry Shot, another film not to be missed

20 wasted dollars! I obviously missed that the dvd was in american format. Luckily my son living in USA was home, so I could watch it on his apple-computer. It was also in no way possible to copy and open the film for european standard.
Please make clear in the presentation of films if they only could be played in american format.

Chapter three of George Romero's mighty zombie trilogy has big footsteps to follow. Night of the Living Dead was a classic that revitalized a certain corner of the cinema, and Dawn of the Dead was nothing short of epic. Day of the Dead, however, has always been regarded as a comedown compared to those twin peaks--and perhaps it is. But on its own terms, this is an awfully effective horror movie, made with Romero's customary social satire and cinematic vigor--when a "retrained" zombie responds to the "Ode to Joy," the film is in genuinely haunting territory. "Day Of The Dead" is, without a doubt, one of the GORIEST films ever made. The premise is pretty simple. A medical team, and a military unit are holed up in an underground missile silo, occaisionally flying a helicopter up and down the coast, looking for fellow survivors, while unbelievably gruesome experiments are being performed by one of the medical personnel on captured "specimen" zombies, in an attempt at finding why the dead are walking. The soldiers just want to shoot them in the head, as that's all that has been proven to stop them; the problem? The zombies outnumber the living by at least 400,000 to one. There's just too many. With a way to modify their behavior, maybe the survivors can stand a chance, but the odds are slim to none of such an insane idea working.

Of course, tensions mount. The claustrophobic living conditions, the bleak atmosphere, and physical and mental strain are taking a very heavy toll, as hope is quickly vanishing. They just want to get out of there, but, as Doctor Logan says, "...where would you go?" People critical of this movie say it has too slow a start, but I say no. The script focuses mainly on how these people are coping, and they aren't coping very well. Detractors say the dialogue has too much shouting, but I wonder how these people themselves would act in such egregious, horrible conditions. No, it is a very well-written script, albeit not George Romero's original one, which everyone says is far superior. It is a very tense screenplay, depicting, in what I would call a very realistic scenario. Not the world being overrun with walking dead, of course, but imagine a somewhat diverse group of people who really can't stand one another, being trapped in a situation where they must cooperate, but just can't anymore. A bloodbath is just one bad day away.

The special make-up effects are among Tom Savini's best work. The zombies in this installment are more decayed looking, which ties in with how the story unfolds in the series. In "Night..." most of them look somewhat ordinary, and the black and white film just makes it eerie. In "Dawn... (the original)" Most of the undead are just discolored, with a few really nasty ones, as time has taken its toll. In this installment, in 1985, seventeen years after the contageon has started, most of them are in the final stages of post mortem rot. It really is what the world would be if such an awful thing could take place.

One little subtlety in the script, that looks like an inconsistency, but isn't, would be when Rhodes decides to start executing people. The people he shoots do not get back up. And one of the soldiers suicides after being bitten in the shoulder by a zombie. He doesn't get back up, and the hordes of undead feast on his carcass. These deaths happened underground, not from infected zombie bites. Keeping in mind, the reason for this outbreak was in "Night..." in 1968, and the reason was some kind of radioactive fallout from a contaminated space probe. The air above ground is contaminated. Hence, underground, and no reanimation. Plus, two of the deaths were from gunshots to the head, guaranteeing no reanimation.

It is a simple, yet very complex story, and some people don't get the ending. It's simple, really. The first scene (spoiler here) is a dream sequence, and after all the nightmarish events of the story, the last remaining characters flee to an island somewhere out in the ocean, and apparently one fell asleep, just to wake up on the island. Physical exhaustion. The last part of the escape, jumping to the island, is nothing more that a time-lapse in the script.

Yes, this is a very good movie of this type, one that I feel is underappreciated.

zombie love.......2007-05-30

Don't get me wrong, here--this is a film with flaws. It had quite a low budget even for its time, and it is nothing if not completely over-the-top (but in a good way). The blood is a little too red. Some of the zombies are just people wearing black and blue spray-on paints. The ending is a bit lacking, and far too comic-booky/Hollywood for some.

However, it's still cleverly done, and once you get into it, the cut corners will fly past your vision. There are some special effects that are still amazing to this day, the characters are interesting, the dialogue is well done and at times intentionally hilarious, and it's got some of the most ridiculously gory and memorable death scenes, right up there with the sleeping bag sequence from Friday the 13th and Phantasm's first death-by-sentinel-sphere.

I can't bring myself to compare it to the other "Dead" films, because it has a distinctly different feel. It's gritty, harshly lit, and consummately '80s.

As for the zombie called "Bub"--be prepared for a rather confusing experience. I had mixed feelings about Bub at first, but now I think I'm in love with him. He is a mouldering, humanoid Gentle Ben. Sherman Howard's performance is enthusiastic, and, dare I say, cute. He obviously got a kick out of the role, and it's always nice to see actors having as much fun as he obviously did (and said as much, in the supplemental materials, which are a blast to watch in and of themselves). Don't underestimate ol' Bub, though. He proves himself to be quite the hardass in the end, even if he does love Beethoven. It's worth noting that a lot of the scenes involving Bub were mostly ad-libbed, which, if you're aware of the fact, adds to the experience.

Long story short, I love the hell out of this movie, and it's probably my favorite of the original trilogy. It's a fun romp, and if you can get past and/or embrace the idea of an adorable gun-toting zombie, you're guaranteed a rip-snortin' good time.

Watch the extras, too! It's worth it if only for the hilarious behind-the-scenes videos of actors struggling with the makeup. Buh huh huhh!

Not very good........2007-05-29

People who are enjoying newer zombie movies like the remake of Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days/Weeks Later may want to steer clear of this one. It's full of rock stupid, bickering, cruel human characters that scream obscenities at each other. It's not good. It's really painful to watch, and I think it'll turn your soul to tar and your brain to oatmeal with repeated viewings.

The best zombie movies in my opinion are the ones that make you feel like it's the end of the world, with violent death around every corner. It's you, with perhaps a small band of survivors, trying to hold out against the destruction of civilization and the human race. This one makes me root for the zombies, and frankly, it loses me there.

I highly recommend you skip this one, and see Dawn of the Dead (2004) or 28 Days Later instead.

Deserves a second look..........2007-05-17

When I first watched "Day of the Dead" many years ago, I must say I thought it was boring. My mind was not ready for the philisophical musings, the complicated relationships, and the strong decisions made by all of the characters.

Watching it now, I realize what an outstanding movie it really is. The plan "B" of the original idea, this movie stands out with a deep story and lots of zombie gore.

Supreme silliness doesn't stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day and Godzilla, you can't blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerich's films, this one emphasizes special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters and plausible plotting, and his dialogue (cowritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff) is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. It's the spectacle that's important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father and son (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal) who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummeled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, and Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans and then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. It's all wildly impressive, and Emmerich obviously doesn't care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? --Jeff Shannon

Not Impressed.......2007-06-13

I saw this movie when it was released, and I must say I was not impressed.

The concept of the movie had some serious potential, but the ball was dropped due to a number of factors. One, the stoy was rushed. Almost instantly the viewer is thrown into the story with very little build-up, which also costs the viewer time to get into the characters and actually get to care about what happens to them. Secondly, when it comes to the order of how things happen, there is no order. Random acts occur almost out of nowhere and without any real explanation. I know that nature itself is unpredictable and for that reason only, it works.

Also, due to the rush of the story as I mentioned, there is no time to really get into the characters and thus, there is no reason to care about them (aside from the dog.) I found myself actually saying that these people weren't prpared and they deserved what they got!

Overall, its a good movie to watch just for the heck of it and getting a good laugh; but its not worth any time beyond that.

Creating a State of Fear.......2007-05-26

The film shows scientists in the antarctic, their tests show global warming is increasing. The paradoxical result will be a frozen earth! TV news shows snow in New Delhi, large hailstones fall in Tokyo. The strongest hurricane has been recorded. A scientist's young son has discovered the politics of education. Sensors measure drops in the ocean's temperature. Birds and animals are restless and disturbed. What in the world is happening? Tornadoes in Los Angeles destroying the city! People are squashed like bugs. Typhoons in Australia! Could the North Atlantic current be changed due to melting ice (fresh water)? [It was cute to have a President who resembled Al Gore. But is the rest of the film just as correct?]

Their computer projections show a disaster is only 6 to 8 weeks away. The worst storms will soon be here. But the Vice President [looks like Dick Cheney] can't be bothered. The temperature dropped so fast people froze to death in Scotland. The water level has risen so fast New Foundland is flooded. Water is flooding the subways and tunnels of Manhattan. Is it the end of the world as we know it? A huge tidal wave hits New York City! [These special effects are really great!] Now super-cooled air is being pulled into the atmosphere to create a new Ice Age! Anyone who goes outside will be flash frozen. There is no escape for anyone. The southern states will be evacuated, there is no hope for those Yankees north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Back in the real world discussion continues on the effects of Global Warming. From the 10th to the 14th century the world was much warmer. Greenland was a green island where settlers lived on their crops. Southern England raised grapes for a wine industry. That changed in the 14th century, increasing cold led to food shortages, famine; then the Black Death killed over 30% of the population. [Read Barbara Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror" for one view of those times.]

Nice multiple storylines, people you could almost care about (The homeless guy and his dog were the best) but still left the film with the feeling that I didn't get my money's worth. Oh well.

This movie celebrates its third anniversary of it's release in dvd format this year. There are currently 2 version of this movie in dvd format up for sale used and they very in price. There are normal widescreen dvd versions of this which cost some where in between $5 to $102.58 a copy with the shipping included depending on the condition. There is a two disk version on sales that which some where in between $5 and $44.95 with a $2.59 shipping fee included. In this movie the weather goes out of control and it's up the young Denis Quad to save the day. Can he save his son and the rest of the world from a weather castrophy of bibilocal portions. Find out in the thrilling, coclusion. If you like this movie I also recommmend, Twister, Volcano, Dante Peak, and Earthquake.

Well, this movie was great nonetheless, but it was fast shipping, and great service. All in all, 5 stars!

This is one of my all-time favorite movies in this genre. Although it was made for TV, it has all the class and eternal significance of any nuclear war or end time movie. I think everyone should own a copy and allow their family to digest it. Frightening Thought.......2007-06-11

Hello. I remember all the "buzz" about this show when it first appeared on television in 1983. At the time, I was prolly at work and also didn't have a VCR then. Now that I have seen it in its entirety, it is an absolutely frightening experience. Now, the dangers of nuclear war are more relevant: India and Pakistan have it... North Korea has it...Iran it trying to get it... Israel has it... the list goes on... The acting in "The Day After" is awesome. Jason Robards is amazing. I was pleasantly surprised by Steven Guttenberg. He's known mainly for those "Police Academy" movies, but he gave an fantastic performance. That sequence where you first see several closeup shots of the Kansas City skyline is ominous, because you kind of have an idea of what will happen next. I can see "The Day After" being remade, to take advantage of our modern technological advances. All in all, the film serves as a reminder that there will never be any winners in a nuclear conflict.

A wickedly entertaining 80's propaganda film.......2007-05-22

Just happening to catch this little gem from the 80's recently on cable, all the memories flood back from the original airing on ABC when I thought: "So, what's the big deal?!".

Having known someone who saw the film in a preview in Lawrence, KS and having been told about the people in the audience sobbing hysterically, I was expecting so much more that I got when I finally had the opportunity to see it for myself. It is only the context of history that now lays bare the hilariously tacky overacting and absurdly ridiculous plot that obliterates Kansas City, but spares the ICBM fields from any strikes, which in reality would have been the converse (in other words-Buh Bye, Lawrence). Not to mention the embrace of the idea of a local skirmish culminating in a 'bolt from the blue' nuclear attack on the US.

All the bunny huggin' liberals writing the glowing reviews of this film also bring me back to the 80's, when the very same no-nukes crowd went absolutely crazy during Reagan's brinksmanship with the (now FORMER) USSR.

This is a quite dramatic, and suspenseful film nonetheless, but to me represents the zenith of the 80's anti-nuclear movement with a masterfully executed attempt at affecting public opinion through production of a straight propaganda piece. Contextually, a great historical snapshot of the opposing side of the strident debate about deployment of the Pershing II in Europe, the MX missle, the 'leaked' planning studies for the aftermath of WWIII, and Reagan's hardline position against the Soviets, all of which scared the bejesus out of the aforementioned bunny huggers.

Of course, with twenty years now in the rearview mirror, the USSR fallen, Reagan vindicated, and after a massive nuclear build-down, it only serves as punctuation to this film, a nice little postscript of historical perspective to complete the circle begun in 1983.

I remember viewing this movie back in the 80's. The movie still scares me today. With all the wars and fighting going on. World War 3 is still a high possibility. Nobody is ready, not even myself. This movie is a must see for everyone. A Very realistic Nucular War movie.

The lethal consequences of a supposed nuclear attack and the complex process of reconstruction, moral, spiritual, physical; a crude and devastating portrait about that mere possibility. A issue in which most of people prefer to overlook.

Nice piece on fervor that surrounded the Manhattan Project. Interesting human interest story of how thousands of people worked for years designing the most powerful weapon ever, but didn't realize the consequences on dropping one in a city full of people, until they see it go off in the desert.

I got this DVD after having read Richard Rhodes's "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" and "Dark Sun". Plus, I had grown up from childhood reading a lot of other books about the making of the atomic bomb.

I had even seen that famous clip of Robert Oppenheimer before, in grade school, a long, long time ago, in an educational movie about the making of the atomic bomb, where he says:

"....We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that one way or another...."

And so I got this DVD, hoping to learn more, about that interview, about Robert J. Oppenheimer, etc.

But NOOOOO.....This DVD turns out to be mostly a series of talking head interviews of a number of the more junior (at the time) physicists involved in the Manhatten Project. Several of them, especially Robert Wilson, speak of their horror and their early opposition to further development and use of the atomic bomb. Almost all of them speak of Robert Oppenheimer, and reminisce about the many conflicts and contradictions of Oppenheimer.

But that's all there is to this DVD. It does not fully explain the contradictions in the life of Robert Oppenheimer, nor how the course of events post-WWII played out that led to Oppenheimer losing his security clearance. It doesn't even explain the setting of that famous Oppenheimer interview quote.

The DVD only has a couple of other clips of Oppenheimer in action.

All in all, this is a mediocre DVD that does not add much more information if you already know much of the history of the making atomic bomb, and Oppenheimer's role in it.

However, if you don't know ANYTHING about this history, probably you'll find this DVD to be fascinating.

Not what I expected.......2007-01-19

The period around the turn of the 20th century produced an enormous burst of discovery in physics. Often, it is the character of people involved that make this such a fascinating period of history. Still, the technical details of discovery and how it broadens our understanding of the physical world intrigues me to a somewhat larger degree. As I was predisposed to the technical, I had hoped for more technical detail in the film. However, far from disappointed, I watched the DVD twice the day I received it and found the film both compelling and entertaining. Oppenheimer's story, told by those yet alive at the time. A look into the Los Alamos community. His political "rise and fall." A rich and rewarding look into the not so distant past. Highly recommended.

This film provided me with new insights into the Trinity Project and the life of the famed Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and his subsequent downfall after the project's conclusion. I recommend this film to any serious student and/or collector of the Bomb.

Would Give it More Than 5 Stars If I Could..........2006-12-24

This is the most engrossing documentary I've ever seen. The portrait that emerges of Oppenheimer is more complimentary than deeper research would support, but director Jon Else has done a superb job of bringing the story of the people behind the making of the atomic bomb to life.

My favorite segments are the interviews with Robert Serber, Oppenheimer's TA at Berkeley and lifelong friend. He's one of the most transparent people I've ever seen on film, and it's fascinating to watch him re-experience conflicting emotions about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

If you have just one iota of intellectual curiosity in your body, you've got to watch this one!!!
