It's only in retrospect that one can see that Joe Dante's Explorers is an awful lot like Robert Zemeckis's Contact. An alien race, determined to make contact with earthlings, feeds some unsuspecting individuals the blueprints for space travel. Instead of the big gyroscope that Jodie Foster was strapped into in Contact, the three kids in Explorers make their intergalactic trip in crystalline blue Flubber. River Phoenix looks shockingly prepubescent (which he was) as Wolfgang, the brains of the trio, while Ethan Hawke looks like a young lady-killer as Ben. Fitting into the "whatever happened to?" category is Jason Presson as Darren, an outcast who joins the two eggheads. Joe Dante's career, cruising after Gremlins was a smash, faced a serious "hitch in the giddyup" when this film sputtered through the 1985 summer season without much of an impact. The effects still hold up nicely, as does Dante's incessant need to pay homage to other, older sci-fi films. The whole thing seems like a lot of trouble for some smackingly bland and silly results, but it's a harmless, initially involving diversion. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars Oldie But Goodie.......2007-07-02

Another great older movie that is something the whole family can see! Very cute and uses the imagination!

3 out of 5 stars Not on a level with The Last Starfighter, but fun for kids........2007-02-14

My son and I agree with another reviewer that it was good until the end, when they came up with these poorly designed rubber aliens, with really bad lines. I do not agree that the foul language was necessary, it really never is. There are many young people who do not use that kind of language, even with their peers. This is a fun movie for younger children, except for the language, which is mild and infrequent compared to most movies.

4 out of 5 stars young teen sci-fi humor.......2007-01-09

Excellent young teen film, a little bit of adult language but needed for the story.

This movie was a great, feel good, imaginative kids movie....3 outcasts, building their dreams, and doing what all kids would love to do...fly their own homemade spaceship. Then the aliens showed up. Silly rubber outfits, and worn out old tv standby gags....ruined the film for me. But it was great until then.

Scandinavian sagas tell the tales of Leif the Lucky and the Land of Grapes, but are these merely boastful yarns of magical heroes or historical facts? VIKING EXPLORERS investigates the oft-repeated claim that the Vikings landed on America's shores 1,000 years ago. Follow the incredible journey that these hardy sailors had to make across the North Atlantic, and go aboard a restored longboat like the one that carried them to the New World. Noted historians tell the remarkable story of Leif Ericsson and his father, the legendary Eric the Red, and attempt to separate fact from fiction in the sagas of these heroes. And in a remarkable interview, archaeologist Helge Ingstad recalls how her discovery of a Viking settlement in North America helped to rewrite history.

The storm of controversy surrounding the population of the Americas.

Who were the first Americans and where did they come from? The conventional view is that they arrived here around 13,500 years ago, but startling new archaeological discoveries suggest it may have been long before that. And experts are testing contentious theories regarding how they got here, including the idea of a dangerous canoe-born voyage from Asia down the west coat of the Americas, or even across the Atlantic from Europe.

Since 1932 and the discovery of ancient weapons at Clovis, New Mexico, the "Clovis-first" theory held that Ice Age big-game hunters entered the continent by crossing a land bridge that spanned the Bering Strait between Asia and Alaska. Then archaeologists discovered a problem: massive ice sheets blocked the way south, and the search for an alternative explanation began. NOVA investigates controversial clues, including finds in an Alaskan bear cave hinting at a west coast voyage, and a stone tool from Virginia claimed to be evidence of a landing from Europe. Then visit an extraordinary Clovis dig in Texas with nearly half a million artifacts, which points to a completely different solution to the puzzle.

Join archaeologists and other experts as they dig into prehistory and uncover a provocative Stone Age detective story.

Special DVD features include: materials and activities for educators; a link to the NOVA Web site; scene selections; closed captions; and described video for the visually impaired.

4 out of 5 stars When did the first Americans arrive?.......2007-03-16

This interesting program offers alternatives to the accepted theory that the first Americans appeared in the new world roughly 13,000 years ago. The theory originated in the 1930s, based on discoveries made at Clovis, New Mexico. The spear points found there led many to believe that they belonged to the earliest explorers of the continent.

However, recent excavations in both North and South America have revealed that humans already inhabited the Americas, with some sites indicating the possibility that humans were in the Americas as long as 20,000 years ago or more. Various theories are given as to how this might have happened, including the remote possibility that people came west from Europe, instead of the usually accepted view that people came across a land bridge from Asia.

Four stars. More research needs to be done on the subject, but we may have to rewrite the history books when it's over!

5 out of 5 stars Great survival and genetic story.......2006-07-24

Fantastic scientific study of survivalism, genetics, and the peopling of America. Hints at explainations for our many differences and yet shows that caucasians have many similarities and potentially even shared ancestry with native Americans. The monuments of the native Americans is their story of exploration, survival, and long running prosperity.

The monuments of other ancient cultures are only large meaningless structures built to satisfy the selfish whims of some egomaniac ancient king which in the long run spent and bankrupted those cultures and led to their defeat and collapse.

      3 out of 5 stars archaic.......2005-06-01

This documentary suggests that humans may have come to the Americas before 13,500 years ago and possibly not over the ice connecting Russia and Alaska. Okay, I don't have a problem with that.

This documentary was just not as thrilling as I thought it would be. When I see Hindu sculptures from 2,000 years ago, I am in awe. However, there are only so many rough spearheads that I can see before I get bored. Ancient Egyptian work is wondrous, the stuff in this documentary was dull and, appropriately, primitive.

This documentary may be ideal for anthropology majors and high school students who think they may want to major in that field. This might even be a good thing to watch on PBS when nothing else is on. Otherwise, it was a bit of a yawner.

4 out of 5 stars QUICK SUMMARY OF EXPLORERS.......2006-06-05

This DVD attempt to cram into about an hour the entire history of North American exploration. Given its aim, I believe it does quite a decent job of doing so. It summarized five hundred years of history and many dozen expeditions and explorers into brief tidbits of information. I don't think this is a good educational tool, since it would likely be somewhat uninteresting -- it does not have very interesting stories, just a stream of information. Rather, this is a good starting point to someone wishing to research North American exploration and would like an intro to the main events and people in its history. Not really something to excite people about history, people seeing this should already be excited.

This four-part adventure combines sword-and-sorcery derring-do with slapstick comedy, in the tradition of El Hazard. The brassy Ihrie wanders through the ruins of an unnamed planet with her partner, the elfin "Wiccan" Fam, in search of three enchanted treasures that can unleash the Ultimate Power. Along the way they're joined by the devious merchant Galuff; the sorceress Racha; the swordsman Migel; and Lyle, prince of the destroyed kingdom of Rehbart. Lyle is seeking revenge on the wizard Rugudorull, whose deadly magic devastated Rehbart. But Rugudorull's fate is tied to the Ultimate Power and the three magic objects: the Proof of Royalty, the Mirror of Truth, and the Sword of Sargus. As this unlikely band joins Lyle in his quest, they forge an alliance, with each character bringing a special strength: Migel, his skill as a warrior; Fam, an ability to talk to spirits and a pure heart; Ihrie, a particularly powerful magic--although using it temporarily turns her into a mouse. The climax is confusing but also suggests the possibility of a sequel, if viewers take Ihrie and Fam into their hearts. The four episodes: 1. "As I Command Thee," 2. "Oh, Spirits that Reside in the Air," 3. "Let the Light of Admonishment Shine Upon the Fools," 4. "The Skies, the Sea and the Woods." Not rated: suitable for ages 13 and up for violence, nudity, and occasional profanity. --Charles Solomon

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great, short anime, but the ending's a bit disapointing........2004-05-11

O.K., here's the story: it's set in a fantasy world where adventurers go exploring ruins searching for treasure and any magical items they can find. If this sounds like any D&D game you played, don't let that throw you off. This has enough action and comedy to satisfy most. I mean, it's not DRAGON HALF, but then few shows are.

Our protagonist is Ihrie, a tomboyish sword fighter who due to a curse inflicted on her years ago is unable to use magic, at least not without a price. (You find out exactly what the curse is in episode 2. Let's just say it's simular to Ranma Soutome's.) To make up for this short coming, she brings with her Fam, a ditzy wiggen (half human, half cat creature) who draws her power from the spirits but often blunders in all things, including magic preforming. They are on a quest for the fabeled Ultimate Power, which could supposedly grant the lucky finder whatever s/he desiers. Ihrie and Fam soon run into another team of ruin explorers-Ragna, another sorceress who has a secret phobia of mice, and her arrogant swordsman partner, who start off as rivals but eventually form an uneasy alliance with our heroines. They are joined by a slimey merchant/con artist, and Lyle, a former prince whose kingdom was wiped out by an evil wizard and who has embarked on a quest for revenge.

The only thing that knocks this down by one star is the ending. Read no further if you hate spoilers. Well, lets just say that I thought Ihrie was supposed to be the main hero, but in the final battle she ultimately didn't seem to really do anything useful, despite her efforts. Also, I wasn't really clear exactly on whether she ever got her curse removed or not.

Anyway, this one is highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Fun-Short-Series.......2002-10-17

Ruin Explores is a very short, 2 hour long, 4-part series that contains everything necessary for a great story. All of the characters are basic, but well developed for the story-line. Nothing is missing, no questions unanswered.

The story goes as this, six companions are in search of the Great-Power, all for their own reasons. Selfish, greedy, personal or for a kingdom. All of the reasons are described in some way or another. I don't want to give anything away. Then comes the "bad-guy", with reasons of his own. A big fight and then the end.

This anime is the reason why animes are fun. It contains a great story that could never really be done with real people, or atleast as fun, well developed characters, Fast-paced as far as anime is concerned, good animation, very good English-Dub for us non-Japanese speaking people, and good sound.

Not a lot of extras, but this doesn't really matter to me.

The only complaint is the ending, it feels as if this series could go on, the further adventures of the Ruin Explorers.

      Buy-it Rent-it Watch-it!!

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2001-12-29

Isn't it amazing how an anime can be so similar to the Slayers series, yet still be so completely different hurts? With such crazy antics and super deformed modes from Dragonhalf, this anime can prove to be an hour ((or more)) of sheer delight or extreme boredom ((to those of us with lives and no sense of humour)). Ruin Explorers is a cheerful combination of The Slayers, Dragonhalf, and somewhat like the Record of LoDoss War. Anyone who likes decent halfwitted anime comedies about a tom-boy sorceres who turns into a cute little mouse will absolutely adore this anime. Cheers!

4 out of 5 stars Fam you idiot!.......2001-12-20

Ruin Explorers, a.k.a. Fam & Ihrie, is the story of two adventurers pillaging the ruins of an ancient civilization for the "Ultimate Power". Though this could easily be bad from the start, the slapstick humor and goofy characters are surprisingly entertaining. The 4 episode series only begins to falter when the heroines and their rivals get caught up in someone else's quest for the Ultimate Power. Unlike Nadia where there is plenty of time to explore the Nautilus' goal and how the main characters fit into it, the shift of focus is too quick and just doesn't come off right. The music, performed by the Versailles Chamber Orchestra, is above average. The English dub is quality stuff; Jessica Calvello's Fam is superb. The Japanese track is equally as enjoyable and both audio tracks are Dolby Digital 2 channel. The menus are pleasant to look at and browse. A small cell gallery is included as an extra. The strength of the duo of Fam and Ihrie really outshines this 4 episode OAV series, and would be great material for a TV show. I give this disk 4 stars for the strength of the first few episodes and the quality DVD. For a fantasy fan there is a lot to like about Fam and Ihrie, others may find the story not quite enough.

      4 out of 5 stars Ruin Explorers -- A Wonderful Artifact!.......2001-07-10

...Though short, this series was far from lacking a good storyline or character development. In fact, this series houses two of my all-time favorite anime characters: Fam and Lyle. And though this will never be my favorite anime series, it will certainly always rank pretty high on my charts. This was a joy to watch, and I've seen this series many times over. It had an endearing, bittersweet story, plenty of action, romance, and even a few comical moments. And the animation isn't anything to be sneezed at, either! And for you bishonen lovers out there, check out Lyle! With a well though-out and drawn-out plot, with interesting characters and cool animation to boot....
