This 1986 fantasy/action thriller has since spawned two sequels, a popular syndicated TV series, numerous comic-book spinoffs, and a loyal (if somewhat oddly obsessive) following of fans. Directed by music video veteran Russell Mulcahy (which explains the dizzying camera work), the original theatrical release made hash of an intriguing story about an "Immortal" from 16th-century Scotland (Christopher Lambert) who time-leaps to modern-day America with his archenemy (Clancy Brown) in hot pursuit. It becomes a battle to the death (yes, Immortals can die), and Lambert seeks survival training from an Immortal mentor played by Sean Connery. Dazzling, energetic, and altogether confusing in its original form, the film has since been released on video, laserdisc, and DVD in this revised widescreen "director's cut," with additional footage, director and producers' commentary, a photo and artwork archive, the original trailer, and an official time line of the film's evolution from script to screen. A distant and animated sequel to the 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert as an immortal Scottish swordsman, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance concerns the tale of Colin MacLeod, a 2nd century, Celtic warrior who becomes immortal following his defeat at the hands of Roman tyrant Marcus Octavius. Colin spends the next couple of millenia chasing after Marcus--also immortal--as the latter reinvents himself time and again as a ruler of kingdoms in every corner of the globe. The longtime duel extends into Earth's dystopian future about 200 years from now, where Colin--now a wandering mercenary--finds Marcus once again making lives miserable as head of a private government wielding a deadly virus. Drawing Colin into the fight is the lovely Dahlia, hauntingly reminiscent of every woman the hero has loved over hundreds of years. Dynamic, visually compelling, and boldly imaginative, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is full of surprises and more than just another story of an embittered loner meandering through a futuristic wasteland. Directed by the prolific Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Neo-Tokyo). --Tom Keogh

There Can Be Only One ... Except In Franchise Versions.......2007-07-02
Any time any established 'franchise' property gets an animated treatment, there's a strong tendency to do comparisons between the different versions of the established 'mythology.' Will be toon/anime be as good as the film versions? Will it be as good as the television series? For that matter, was the television series as good as the film that launched the franchise? Etc. and so forth. We're all human -- the great irony in the grand debate about an idea centered on immortals -- and maybe that, in the end, is what the HIGHLANDER franchise is telling us about ourselves: we'll always be looking for something not so much as 'new' as it is a mild 'change' to the original.
As a tweak to the HIGHLANDER history, HIGHLANDER: THE SEARCH FOR VENGEANCE may OR may not serve as a jumping on point for new fans as well as a great reason for the established fans to get together and watch as an audience; I say "may or may not" because I don't know. I've only seen the first two films and a handful of the television episodes, so my perspective is not really of fandom nor the uninitiated 'newbie.' Simply, I enjoy genre movies, and I thoroughly enjoyed VEANGEANCE for what it was: another outing within the myths set into motion by the original film.
I've read a handful of reviews that have strongly criticized the animation -- "wasn't strong enough," "wasn't visual enough," "wasn't different enough" -- and I'd have to agree that there were some sequences that felt a bit derivative of other anime ... but I'd have to defend the film by saying that it didn't distract from my overall enjoyment of seeing Colin MacLeod in his quest to vanquish fellow immortal but sworn enemy Marcus Octavius (sp?) for all of the pain caused throughout the centuries. Every joy Colin has found -- from women, to family, to friendship -- has been destroyed at Marcus's hands, and THE SEARCH FOR VENGEANCE is, at its core, about the good old-fashioned cinematic qualities of 'payback.' Nothing more, nothing less. There isn't anything poetic here, per se, except for the fact that history's one true immortal -- love -- will eventually find you again even if the one person who provided it keeps changing.
Outside of that, VEANGEANCE offers enough excitement to keep any HIGHLANDER fan -- new or old -- welcome at the table of the Clan MacLeod for one more adventure.
Pretty good... And I'm no fan of highlander.......2007-06-24
I never followed the original Highlander. To be honest, what little bit I caught throughout the years was not enough to even get my long term attention. I saw Endgame back in 2000 and I can't remember if I liked it or not. I feel my ignorance of the movies is a good thing because there was nothing for me to expect. Now after saying that, I have to admit that I found this enjoyable and it has a permanent home in my collection of anime.
This movie is nothing more than a tale of blind revenge. Colin's lover was killed by another immortal named Marcus and he set out for revenge. I found it funny as he11. It was just laugh out loud funny to me for the simple fact the guy chased him for 2000 years. He either got beat up or came up short. The flashbacks of him chasing Marcus even through the great wars such as world war 2 in airplanes was just hilarious.
The plot was pretty weak but the action scenes past and present definitly makes up for this. The voice acting for the characters was pretty good. The old man's spirit who taged along with Colin provided some good comedy.
The animation was pretty good to include the soundtrack. And like I said before the action scenes were great. Lots of shooting and swordplay.
For that price, I recommend this to anyone who likes hack and slash type anime. Since I'm not a real fan of Highlander it doesn't make sense to say that all or even most Highlander fans will be satisfied. If your a fan I guess you should check it out.
WOW!!!.......2007-06-20
This was one of the best animated movies I have ever seen.
Powerful characters, great acting.
The search for a good sequel is over.......2007-06-17
Since the notorious "Highlander II: The Quickening" was released in 1991, the legions of "Highlander" fans around the world have longed for a good sequel. The producers made a second attempt with 1994's "Highlander III: The Sorcerer," the result being better than "Highlander II," but still far from a fine sequel. The most recent attempt, 2000's "Highlander: Endgame," teamed the movies' Connor MacLeod with the television series' Duncan MacLeod, but the film was too dark, too violent, and too shallow. 2007 promised two more "Highlander" sequels: the live-action "Highlander: The Source," directed by Brett Leonard, and an anime film, "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance," directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the prolific anime director behind "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" and "Ninja Scroll."
It's curious that somebody didn't think to make "Highlander" as anime before, because it's a perfect match. "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" is proof of that. The film is essentially a Japanese re-telling of the "Highlander" legend, this time revolving around Colin MacLeod (who, for those of you fed up with all these immortal MacLeods, is just adopted into the clan). He begins life in the first century A.D., preparing to lead his army of 400 against an army of 4,000 Romans led by Marcus, an evil immortal in love with the concept of Rome. Colin's one true love sedates him one night and visits Marcus to beg for Colin's life - but when she refuses to sleep with him and "murders" him instead, Marcus crucifies her and surprises Colin's sleeping army. 2,000 years later, in future post-apocalyptic New Jersey and then New York, a bitter, relentless Colin MacLeod lives for his quest for vengeance, and nothing more.
It's an interesting story, written by David Abramowitz, the man responsible for much of "Highlander" the series' greatness. It also adds a newly fantastic element to the "Highlander" saga, including horned demons, multi-headed ghouls, and a very amusing (and for Colin, obnoxious) ghost named Amergan. All this is stylishly and beautifully drawn according to Kawajiri's hard-edged vision. It's at once a bloody tale of vengeance through the ages, an explosive futuristic sci-fi actioner, and an intelligent love story of reincarnation. It's also, without question, the first good "Highlander" sequel. It's ironic that the sequel we fans have been longing for for so long has arrived in the form of an animated film, but rejoice! It has. "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" is a great movie and an excellent sequel, and if you're a "Highlander" or anime fan, it's essential. How wonderful it feels to have the franchise's trademark line, "There can be only one," no longer apply to its films.
A remake done right........2007-06-13
I wasn't sure about what to expect from this one. I mean, everybody loves the Highlander franchise, but what would the Japanese take on it be? The answer is a brillaint animated reinvention of a bonafide action/fantasy classic with all of the thrills of the original propery and none of the baggage of the sequels. As with the preceding work of animated genius, "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" (which shares a director and artistic style with this film), this was a true collaberation between eastern and western styles and ideas. The result is extremely complimentary and I can only hope we see more of this in the future. If you aren't familiar with the original film, I'd suggest you view it before taking this one on, as very little time is wasted on exposition. The writers assume you know what's up and treat the story accordingly. The biggest difference between the original films and series is that Colin McCloud's focus isn't on hunting the other immortals to gain their quickening and the whole "there can be only one" battle royale aspect. In fact, he attempts to avoid a confrontation early on with an adversary (with a giant chainsaw...cooool!) who seeks to take his head for that reason. Colin wants the blood of one man and one man only: Marcus Octavius, the Roman ruler who crucified his wife and destroyed his homeland. His quest for vengeance has him chasing his much-more-skilled adversary throughout human history; from feudal Japan to WWII to where we meet him in a post-apocalyptic future (my favorite kind of future!). He is accompanied only by the spirit of an old druid and his 2000 years of hatred as he tracks his foe to a ruined city full of sick, wretched souls living underground in need of a champion to lead them in revolution. But Colin has wasted his entire existence pursuing vengeance, so what does he care, right? Perhaps a bit of perspective on the nature of life, even mortal life, can show him the way. The story is great, the art is beautiful, the action is brutal, and yes there is sex and nudity involved so don't buy it for the kiddies. This is great, R-rated animated entertainment and a great way to spend an hour-and-a-half. It's also a wonderful tribute and addition to a franchise that has seldom lived up to it's potential. Like I said, this is a remake done right; it reinvents the characters and concepts of the original without being just a copy. Now if only Queen had been on the soundtrack....

The Original Highlander - Cult Classic.......2007-07-03
1986's "Highlander" is a good science fiction movie with an exceptionally intriguing concept for a storyline, that a race of immortals live among us and are battling to the last man for an unnamed prize. The concept fueled three big screen sequels and at least two TV series. This is the movie that started it all.
The movie proceeds along parallel story arcs. In one, an antique dealer named Nash, played by Christopher Lambert, battles a series of immortal opponents in modern day New York, while attracting the attention of a curious female police scientist named Brenda (played by Roxanne Hart).
In the second story arc, a Scots Highlander named Connor MacLeod (also played by Lambert) who, after being mortally wounded in battle in 1536, discovers that he is immortal. Connor is sought out by an even older immortal named Ramirez (perfectly played by Sean Connery) who teaches him how to fight and how to avoid losing his head to another immortal. Ramirez prepares Connor for the necessarily lonely life he will have, outliving the mortal humans around him. Ramirez also prepares him for an eventual rematch with Kurgan, the evil seven-foot giant immortal who first wounded Connor in battle.
The two story arcs will come together in New York City in the present. Nash, as Connor now calls himself, finds himself falling in love with Brenda just as his old nemesis Kurgan arrives for "the Gathering", the final battle of immortals. Connor and Kurgan (played by Clancy Brown) will maneuver for a final confrontation at swordpoint that only one of them can survive.
"Highlander" was apparently strapped by a small budget that limited production values and special effects, but the producers more than made up for this with beautiful location shooting in Western Scotland, a magnificent score by QUEEN, and some well-staged action sequences. The interaction between Macleod and Ramirez is priceless, as Ramirez imparts both fighting skill and friendship to the young Macleod.
This movie is highly recommended as an exceptionally entertaining experience to science fiction fans and to fans of the later versions of this storyline.
highlander.......2007-05-12
I have seen this movie a quite a few times. It's one of my favorites. I was suprised with added scenes.
There can be only one!.......2007-05-09
I must admit that this is one of my favorite movies. I saw this when it first came out and loved it. Just imagine the premise, although some people think it is silly, back in the 80's (when I originally saw it) it was cutting edge, the concept I mean. Connor MacLeod is an immortal, who has lived for centuries, shunned by his village and hunted by some. He has outlived his true love and realizes that his gift (i.e., immortality) is a double edged sword..meaning while he lives forever, those he loves will not. Mentored by Ramirez, played by a dashing Sean Connery, Connor sets forth to simple stay alive and protect his secret. Leap forward to modern day New York an we see MacLeod is wealthy and living life as a recluse. Hunted by those who want his power, attracted to a woman who wants to learn his secret, we learn that other immortals are trying to behead him and receive the "quickening" (his immortality and power). Destined to live forever, because he can be killed and yet wake up later, with the exception of beheading of course, Connor sets out to protect his interests, his secret and maybe get the girl. What I think I liked more about the original, than the television series (which was made years later) is that Christopher Lambert has a haunted quality about him that simply takes your breath away. As he roams the Scotland countryside, and takes care of his aging wife, who he loves passionately, you realize that he will be alone forever. Although later sequels were not as good, his eyes (which seem to look into your very soul) will always leave a vivid image of someone who is well troubled and yet hopeful. But what is most powerful about this original is the cinematography...Scotland is absolutely beautiful! So rent it or purchase it, you won't be sorry.
Dont be scared, its a decent copy.......2007-03-23
After hearing several reviews of dvd versions of the film I was terrified to purchase any but went with it anyhow. I'm a film freak as well but the quality of the release is acceptable. Its not like they filmed movies back then with crystal clear High Def cameras with 7.1 speaker setups in mind! And who knows what the requirments are for a full digital restoration. You've got to cut it some slack considering the time and budget it was filmed on.
I didnt see it in the theatre so I can't make version comparisons but it is just like I remember seeing it on tv as a kid(minus a scene or two). Its a bit goofy, but its no goofier than any film from that period or any worse quality.
If you remember it from way when or are another Sean Connery fan, go with it, its worth the couple bucks. If you've never seen it then dont get it with expectations of it holding up to this years films. Overall worth what I paid!!

The Television Show Triumphs the Movies.......2007-06-27
I like so many people loved the first Highlander movie, and was disappointed by every effort since the first. I was really happy with how much the Highlander, the Series made the Highlander Universe grow and expand. This first season DVD is excellent. I love the production notes, the Watcher's Chronicles, and the easy navigation. I was really surprise how many of the first season episode standout as really great. I assumed some the first year stuff actually came in the second season. The DVD set is great and it has of course set me on the path of collecting all the other season. It worth every penny if you are a Highlander Fan!!
Highlander review.......2007-06-01
If you like the Highlander series the way I do you will love this set of DVDs which covers the first season of the series 1 at a time. There is also a section of Bloopers which is always entertaining and serves to put the immortal ones in the real spectrum of human beings. There is a section about the watchers which I found good because the watchers didn't appear in the first season so this section allowed me to see something I didn't think I would be able to. Adrian Paul, Stan Kirsch and Alexandra Vandernoot did a wonderful job of portraying a very fanciful idea of life so that I could believe it. Care was taken throughout the series to address the issues that would rise because of the situation of immortality such as what happens when an immortal "dies" and what situations could rise because of the greed of mortals in dealing with the immortals.
This is a great series!!.......2007-05-14
This is something you should have, if you like highlander then this is for you. The menus are great, the format, all the way it's been made is excellent.
There can be only one!.......2007-03-19
Great show. Duncan McLeod is a hero. My scottish fold cat is name Duncan, Duncan McLeod of the clan McLeod there can be only one! Excellent show.
The Beginning of a Modern Epic.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series has to be judged on its own or one runs into problems of continuity that cannot be resolved. On its own Season 1 began an epic journey into the life of Duncan MacLeod, the man who can only die by beheading. This is a story about immortals who hunt each other over the centuries with swords until only one remains.
The series occurred in an interesting time for television. Serial television generally kept a show theme, but each episode was a stand-alone story. During this decade shows (like Babylon 5 that began 2 years after the start of Highlander) proved that viewers were willing to watch shows that had story archs reaching across entire seasons or more. Today it is common to find espisodic television with continuous storylines (e.g. 24, Lost, etc.). Highlander (as other shows of this time) seemed to be a hybrid. Most shows were standard 1 episode fair with the occasional "to be continued" 2 episode arch. But interwoven throughout the episodes one finds storylines that continue to pop up throughout the series lifetime. The cause-effect relationship between espisodes becomes strong with Highlander (and some other television of this time).
Despite many flaws, I have to give Season 1 five stars because it began something great and has a charm and freshness that the latter 5 seasons lack. Episodes from Highlander break down into 3 categories. 1) Good stand alone episodes, 2) Episodes that would be appealing or tolerable to fans but weak on their own, and 3) Episodes better forgotten. The series favored the first two categories, and most of category 3 are to be found in later seasons, especially season 6. Season 1 sets up many characters who persist through further seasons: MacLeod, Tessa, Richie, Joe Dawson, Amanda, and Fitzcairn, to name a few.
Definately worth a watch.

Highlander The Series - Season 2.......2007-03-17
This was a great way for me to watch one of my favorite shows over and over again.
Good Television.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series Season 2 continues the saga of Duncan MacLeod. Episodes continue to be good. A major character is lost and another gains something new. Charlie DeSalvo is introduced in this season. Highly recommended.
Highlander Season 2.......2006-07-21
I purchased this item only because it was advertised as new. When the package arrived, I found that the box, while still sealed in plastic wrap, was very badly beaten up and otherwise damaged. So far I have not found any problems with the DVD's themselves, however, being a collector, the condition of the box is very important to me. Thus, I will not buy anymore DVD's or any other products of that nature from Amazon for fear of a similar occurrence.
Re: Highlander Website/Prices.......2006-02-19
Amazon.com gives a better deal on shipping, but the official Highlander website has cheaper prices overall and you even get a few bonus novelties with your order...so what's a good compromise? Try the DeepDiscountDVD website for free shipping and each series at less than $30, then if you don't want novelties you aren't forced to pay extra for them.

Despite a typically haphazard plot, Highlander: Endgame is a marked improvement over previous sequels. This is the "torch-passing" chapter, in which the Immortal Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) passes his life force to his heroic brother, Duncan (Adrian Paul, star of the 1993-96 Highlander TV series). These appealing stars make a fine onscreen duo, and Paul is a terrific choice to keep the franchise alive--strikingly handsome but possessing enough gravitas to make the prospect of future sequels unexpectedly promising. The movie is incoherent to the uninitiated, but established fans will be reasonably impressed by Endgame's cagey mix of romance, swordplay, and history-spanning action. While the movie's chaotic construction is regrettable, the frequent battles (including dazzling work by Honk Kong action star Donnie Yen) are adequately impressive, and Douglas Milsome--cinematographer of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket--ensures that every scene is strikingly photographed. All in all, Highlander: Endgame is surprisingly worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon
Description
In a final battle against the immortals, Connor (Christopher Lambert) and Duncan (Adrian Paul) join forces and confront the powerful Highlander villain and his band of immortals in their last chance to fight against the ultimate evil.
Customer Reviews:
A great effort after a couple of stinkers!.......2007-05-08
I loved the first Highlander is was smart, well put together and exciting. This fourth movie is no exception after a couple of really disappointing sequels. This movie seemed like a longer TV episode of the series, with bigger, better effects. If you liked the TV series (which I did) then you'll love this fourth installment in the Highlander epic.
Highlander - Endgame.......2007-03-17
This was a great way for me to watch one of my favorite shows over and over again.
You have to watch a few times!.......2007-03-14
I have seen this movie twice now, and I think the more I watch it, the more I will pick up on. If you're a fan of the TV series, and the first 3 Highlander movies (other than 2 of course!) you're going to love this movie!
Impressive.......2007-02-17
The Highlander movies were sort of strange, to say the least. The first one was fantastic and very original to me - it had an interesting plot and a fantastic concept. Then Christopher Lambert was the perfect character for Connor, and Sean Connery perfect as his mentor. But then the second Highlander movie came out, and it was nothing short of deplorable. In fact, I'm still wondering why Lambert and Connery even egreed to do it. The studio pretty much wants to pretend that one didn't exist. The third one was better than the second, but that's hardly saying much. It at least had an interesting concept of possibilities with the 'realm of immortals', being frozen in ice over time.
But this was a Highlander movie IMO well worthy of the franchise. It utilizes Adrian Paul from the series and does a great job of passing the torch from Lambert to Paul. The story's about another Highlander named Jacob Kell (anyone notice how seemingly all the worst of the bad character's first names start with K? What's up with that? Kell, Kurgan, Kronos, Kalas, Kane, etc.) who seeks revenge on Connor. Moreover, Kell is an immortal that doesn't play by the 'rules', and has far more scalps than any other immortal. After forcing Conner out of hiding, Conner and MacLeod are forced to try to stop Kell.
I liked this one. The choreography was sensational, just like the television series. Adrian Paul really is a martial arts expert, so it's no surprise he and ins sensei had a heavy hand in the sword fights and action scenes. The plot was solid - the love interest was a little dry, IMO. But the theme of the movie more follows the way the story evolved through the television series. Also, the soundtrack was great... although nothing will capture the series quite as well as Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever" or "Prince's of the Universe". But I also wondered... is there even a 'prize' anymore with 'new' immortals??? That's the one thing the sequels & series could never get over. Meh... it's still entertaining and I recommend checking it out. Rumor had it another movie was being made, but I last heard of that one 2 years ago.
Quality Highlander.......2007-01-08
I have to admit, if the Highlander Franchise really has to end with this movie, it ended very well. This movie will be appreciated not just by fans of the movies, but of the Television series as well.

OK but Weaker Overall.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series Season 4 is not bad, but it ain't great either. If you have been hooked by the first 3 seasons, then you should enjoy this season for its ups and down moments. Fitzcain makes another appearence in this season, but I thought he died last season. I'll have to look this up to straighten it out.
(added: All later Fitzcain episodes included him in scenes that occurred prior to Fitzcain's death)
On a Disc, superbly........2006-07-24
This DVD set is excellent value. Overall the stories are clever, literate and thrilling with two of them Homeland and Through a Glass Darkly being set in Scotland. The latter a reworking of the Rashomon idea - the same event seen in a totally different way by eyewitnesses - is cleverly done with an interesting portrayal of a not so Bonnie Prince Charlie as he was later to become, a drunken, incapable sot. Homeland is my favourite Highlander story and is to me what the myth is all about - nobility, honour, tradition, loyalty. It is excellent and the fact that Adrian Paul directed it and much of it was filmed in Scotland just makes it more enjoyable. The insights from the cast and others are informative, funny and interesting. Suprisingly David Abramowitz, the story editor for the series is rather uncomplimentary about both these episodes and all the commentators on the Homeland episode seemed to have missed the significance of the raven in the Viking connection to the tale. Watch it for yourself and see what you think. All in all this disc set is superb and a must for any Highlander fan.

This was a great way for me to watch one of my favorite shows over and over again.
The Good and the Bad.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series Season 3 begins to show some wear. A few episodes are under par, but these are compensated by some of the better episodes of the entire series. "The Samurai" episode is one of my personal favorites of the series. The character Methos is also introduced in this season. These two facts saved this season from a 3 star rating.
love it .......2005-01-10
great box set but if you really want it go to highlander web site and buy it for 39.95 a set all 6 for 240.00 plus the box to put them in for only $1.00
Bigger and better extras.......2004-09-10
The DVD collections of the Highlander series have just got better and better. I've always loved the series, but what has particularly impressed me has been the extras. I though the individual intros to each episode for Season 1 and 2 were really cool because I hadn't come across that type of approach before, but with season 3 these evolve into mini-documentaries with comments from various cast and crew. I don't tend to have the patience for lengthy audio commentaries, so these are just great - relatively brief and extremely interesting. Season 4 continues the trend.
My favourite episodes in Season 3 are "The Samurai" and "Methos".
My only grumble is I can't stand fold-out packaging -- ugh, you have to spread the wretched thing over half the lounge room floor to find a disk, the coffee table is not even long enough!! I guess I can put up with it though.
A must for any fan of the series!!
There IS ONLY ONE...........more, more MORE!!.......2004-03-23
I have watched this DVD AT LEAST 15 TIMES COMPLETELY THROUGH!.....I can't get my hand off of the DVD remote.....Everything that MAC does....and the poor heartbreak he continues to live without his precious TESSA.....is just a tear jerker..... The fatherly feelings for Richie....is so inspiring....and of course let's not forget the swordfights!!!! I am just glad that there is more than one episode on every DVD....to include synopsis by the directors, etc.......

Customer Reviews:
Saved by Two.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series Season 5 is saved by two episodes, "Comes a Horseman" and "Revelation 6:8". These two episodes are considered the best two in the series by many/most fans. They are quite good.
The rest of the season is hit and miss. Good for fans, but at time trying to watch. The show experiments with some interesting things with good and bad results.
The last episode "Archangel" is often hated by fans as an important character is killed. The entire season 6 was supposed to be focused on resolving this one episode, but this idea was condensed into the first two episodes of season 6.
Shaded Reviewer.......2006-04-04
Without a doubt the best season yet. Season five combines an entirely thrilling set of characters including, Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul), Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch), Methos (Peter Wingfield), Amanada (Elizabeth Gracen) and Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes) and let's not forget our comic relief character who continually seems to be popping up from the past, Fitzcairn.
The season exceeds the other before (and after) it mostly because of the script. There are some absolutely brilliant lines in a few episodes that just take your breath away. The character of Methos is really devloped in a most astonishingly and heartily genius manner.
The episodes that really got the limelight from me were 'Comes a Horseman' and it's continuiation, 'Revelations 6:8' mainly starring Methos. It's the first time we get flashbacks from his character and it's really an amazingly well done piece of work. The effort both the actor and the writers put into the character is very noticable and very much appreciated. If only Highlander had known that 5,000 year old immortal from season one.
The opening episode of season five introduces a new character to the screen, Cassandra. A 3,000 year old immmortal whom Duncan met in his childhood. She appears once more later on in the season.
A shocking finale to the season involves a heavy plotline involving Richie and Duncan, with Methos and Joe involved as a backset. A menacing evil has appeared and the ancient prophecy, which started up at the beginning of the season, is now being played out. The last episode ends as a cliffhanger making fans rush to buy the last season, num. 6.
Different Version at Highlander-Official.com.......2005-05-06
Following the advice of another reviewer, I went to the official HL website and found they are indeed selling the sets for half of what other retailers are charging. However - caveat emptor - the Season 5 set that the HL Store sent me has 8 discs, not 9, and seems to be missing two vital (to me, anyway) bonus features - "Peter Wingfield: The Man Who Became Methos" and "The Time of the Gathering: Highlander's 1998 Convention" (which I attended). After getting no response to two separate emails, I took time out of my workday to call the HL Store (they only answer the phone 8:30-5 PST, M-F). The operator I talked to said that the sets they have are the "European" versions of the sets, but they're the same as Anchor Bay's sets. When I told her this wasn't the case, we both took our computers online to Sam Goody, which lists the bonus features (why is Amazon not doing that for Season 5, anyway?). Because her computer was glitching, she asked me to print out the webpage that listed the bonus features and fax it to her. That was the last I heard, and - quite frankly - I don't know if they're planning to do anything about it besides say, "Oh, well." Perhaps I should call again... The practical upshot of all this is, if Methos and/or the 1998 convention hold any importance to you (and who doesn't hold Methos as important?), be careful about buying Season 5 at the Highlander site.
no subtitles.......2005-04-26
I am a fan of the show but was very disappointed to discover that the subtitle feature was not available. I often watch TV late at night and don't like to have the volume very loud, as I don't live alone. The subtitle feature has been a blessing for me when watching movies and other TV shows on DVD. I didn't start my Highlander collection until Season 5 was released, so I am not very optimistic that the other season sets are going to be different. I will still get all 6 seasons but are not going to rave about them. I also didn't like the packaging. Who wants to have to remove one disc to get to another? I will probably have to keep my Highlander DVDs in a CD wallet to make it more convenient.
Possibly the show's best season........2005-02-11
Many fans consider this season to be the last true season of "Highlander" before the series spiraled towards oblivion with season six. Many fans also consider this to be the show's best season. No matter what you say, it's indisputable that the fifth season holds some of the show's finest episodes.
One of the lesser points of the show's later years was that it delved deeper into the realm of fantasy, bringing in witches and even a Zoroastrian space demon (!). Season five begins with one such episode, entitled "Prophecy", which introduced the character of Cassandra (played by Tracy Scoggins), a five-hundred-year-old witch whom MacLeod briefly met as a child. We explore the after-effects of MacLeod's Dark Quickening (from the season four episode "Something Wicked") in "The End of Innocence", a great episode that shows Richie's loss of trust in Duncan. Carl Robinson, the character from season two's "Run For Your Life", returns in "Manhunt" (as well as a young Eric McCormack), while - naturally - Amanda returns for many an episode. The high point of the season is undoubtedly the two-parter which delved into Methos' dark past, beginning with "Comes a Horseman" and ending with "Revelation 6:8". These two episodes are often thought to be the best of the whole show, and I must say I agree. These are just a few of the great episodes in this season, which also includes the entirely flashback episode "Stone of Scone", as well as the beautiful "Duende", and intriguing "Modern Prometheus". We're left with a cliffhanger for the season - "Archangel", the first of the Ahriman trilogy, which forsees the coming of a space demon whom Duncan alone can defeat. If it sounds horrible, it's because it is.
One of the best parts of season five is not simply the jump forwards in script quality, but the evolution of the characters. They seem much more three-dimensional in this season, and are also placed in difficult situations which makes us think, "What would I do in this situation?"
Of course, the real reason to love this season is the many appearances of Methos. (Wink wink.)
If you were introduced to the show through the DVDs, you're in for a real treat with this season. For you longtime "Highlander" fans out there, sit back and enjoy what may be the best season of the entire show.

LOVE IT!.......2007-06-28
I've always enjoyed the "Highlander" movies, specifically the swords. I've been fascinated with swords since I was about 5 yrs old. Anyway, it's not a GREAT great film, but it does have a lot of good action in it. I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't scared of a little bit of head rolling, swords swinging, and general fantasy flicks.
BETTER WITH EACH VIEWING.......2007-06-07
When I first watched "Highlander: The Final Dimension" a few years ago, I was disappointed. But after watching the film a couple of more times, I started to warm up to it more. True, its still the worst film in the series, but it is still a pretty good movie. The story is a bit weak due to the fact that the writers pretty much rehashed the plot for the first film. Still, the acting is great, and the battle scenes are pretty dang good. While non-fans will find little to enjoy in the film, established fans will be pleased for the most part.
Movie/DVD Grade: B
Highlander3.......2007-02-20
An interesting and exciting movie. Brings another eposode to the story. Enjoyed it for the action and the detail. Worth watching and owning.
A bit of a rehash, but an enjoyable sequel to 1986's "Highlander".......2007-01-05
Ignoring the events of "Highlander 2," this film picks up 9 yrs after the first. We find MacLeod living with his adoptive son in Morocco and satisfied that he is the last immortal and has the coveted "Prize." Soon he recieves a cognition that more immortals are alive (revived from "death" by an archeological dig) and packs for NYC for a duel with the evil sorcerer immortal Kane.
Made while the tv show was at its peak, this film benefits from the influence of its narrative and production style that had been refined over the years. Most of the characters and their relationships (especially the love interests) are thin and underdeveloped. The movie relies heavily on nostalgia for the 1st film for the impact of its emotional scenes. It also mirrors it's story to the point of being a near remake. The police hunt subplot simply drops out of the picture near the end and the villians were too silly. The special f/x are enjoyable but underused (Kane barely uses his illusions during fights.)
Still, the deja vu and pretention and trickery themes are well handled (though not explored as much as they could have been). Lambert is as appropiately meloncally and good humored as in previous entries, van Peeples is clearly having fun with his deliciously devilish over the top performance, Unger is quite attractive (even more so in the obligatory sex scene, of course), and Mako's dignified presence is, of course, a welcome addtion to the "Highlander" saga. The special f/x were good for there time and still fairly impressive today. The DVD is barebones though, and the picture has not been cleaned up.
The concept of immortals and their eternal battle are not explained in this movie and may leave the unintiated confused. Seeing "Highlander" first or doing a little net research may be required for understanding. Overall, a competent production and a worthy if underdeveloped and rushed sequel to the 1986 film.
A true sequal to the original, although the first stood alone........2006-07-04
This is the Third installment of the Highlander movie series, and it is truly the sequel to the first. Againg, the first movie was never intended to have a sequel, but this one did a better job at addapting the first movies story line. Remember, the second movie (the Quickening) was never really intended to be a sequel and to be a different piece of the puzzle, although it was a calculation that misfired with fans and the box office because it did use sean connery and christopher lambert again. The action is good, and it stays true to the highlander themes. But, this movie essentially is the first one retold again, with the explanation that "oops, I guess there was one more alive", a lame cop out to get a sequel. But, again for the collector, you will need this movie in the collection. It is good as a primer to watch the first one again.

Disappointing.......2007-06-27
I've enjoyed the Highlander series and was looking forward to a great finish for a great series....however, I was greatly disappointed. With the exception of the two-part finale, all the other episodes were lacking. Duncan McLeod isn't even in most of them--instead the episodes are just bad attempts at spin-offs. The only upside to sitting through them is Duncan being the love interest of the female stars. Quite disappointing for the amount of money. Not the same caliber as the other series sets.
Highlander The Series - Season 6.......2007-03-17
This was a great way for me to watch one of my favorite shows over and over again.
Move Along ..........2007-02-21
Highlander the Series Season 6 is well... not too good, disappointing, even rude. I say rude because the writers chose this season to test ideas on its fanbase. Many of the episodes are centered around new female leads that would star in the next spinoff. This seems like bad form, that instead of giving the fans a finished product, those involved used the fans as a focus group. Rude to say the least.
The first two episodes address the season 5 finale. Good ideas but bad execution. The final two episodes of this season has a borrowed storyline and a disappointing villain. The writers really phoned this season in. Really the worst writing of the series can be found in season 6.
To put salt on the wound, the season contains half the number of episodes of the other 5 seasons. Further the DVD repeats a lot of material over and over. The same cuts from interviews of those involved with production reappear episode after episode. This DVD set is really NOT worth the same price as the others.

I have been looking for this set of DVDs around Christmas time at local stores with no luck. My husband is a huge Highlander fan and I knew this would be the perfect gift. I was able to find this box set on Amazon at a cheaper price than I had seen previously. I was able to put my order in a week before the 25th of December and it arrived within 4 days.
I was happy to have received it in such a quick manner and on Christmas day my husband was thrilled to have gotten it and has already watched most of the DVDs. He is thrilled with this purchase.
