James Mason plays Professor Oliver Lindenbrook, a scientist hoping to find the world's core in this 1959 adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. He leads his unusual party on an expedition to the center of the earth, by way of a volcano in Iceland. On the way, they encounter enormous mushrooms and giant prehistoric monsters. Produced by Michael Todd with then-spectacular special effects, the story was modernized to 1950s sensibilities. Mason gives this class, while Arlene Dahl and Diane Baker are the romantic interests. And Pat Boone is more palatable than you might expect as a secondary lead. You can watch this with your children and not be bored, and they will surely love it. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Journey to the Center of the Earth.......2007-07-04
My son was so interested in seeing this movie after seeing the book at a Doctor's office. He has been thrilled with the quality and the story!
In the spirit of Jules Verne.......2007-06-29
Collectively, Verne's novels were called "Les voyages extraordinaires", and this film, whatever licenses have been taken with the source, aspires to that. While the prelude to the journey is too long (we even have to endure Pat Boone croon a tuneless number), once we've plunged into the Earth, the film takes on an air of wonderment.
Cast chemistry contributes in a big way. James Mason, a brooding but stout leader. Pat Boone, surprisingly effective as an eager student (but not so successful as a Scotsman). Arlene Dahl, a ravishingly beautiful damsel who is sage and sane and only distressed when she really really needs to be. Real-life Icelander Peter Ronson, a tall man's man -- who loves his pet duck. Gravelly-voiced American (believe it or not) Thayer David, pure villainy.
While the special effects are often praised, I think much of the credit for the wonder and awe of the film goes to the elaborate sets.
And I doubt that Bernard Herrmann had a better vehicle for his mystical, sonorous music.
Add the final ingredient: a script that mixes fun and excitement with the fantastical.
Blend thoroughly and you have an extraodinary voyage for the teenager in you.
My Favorite Adventure Movie of All-Time!!!.......2007-06-17
I am in my late 20's and I saw this for the first time when I was a young teenager. It captivated my imagination in so many ways and after viewing it repeatedly within the last few years after getting it on DVD I have to say it completely stands the test of time. I wouldn't change a single thing about the characters, actors chosen to play them, the plot, the special effects, anything. It all fits together perfectly, like in the same way Goonies and Ghostbusters did. Plus the soundtrack is phenomenal. Every time I hear an excerpt from it I get sucked back into the movie. It's perfect music for the journey.
The screenplay is excellent. It has the right amount of scientific basis, comedy spots here and there, intelligent lines, logical dialog, and the best possible way of telling a story about a journey to the center of the Earth. I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure the center of the earth is molten and extremely hot and not possible to get to. So the story in general cannot actually happen in real life. But that doesn't matter. the story here is presented in the best possible way that it *could* happen if it were a possibility. And presented in a way most people would actually want it to happen.
The reason I love older adventure movies more than newer ones is because they didn't have computer effects to use so they made every thing, which in turn gave it a more tangible quality and made it more real. Most of the special effects completely hold up. The lizards seem real, the ocean scenes and the journey down all seem extremely real.
It's a top notch production all the way through. Every now and then the stars align on a film and it surely did with this one. I wouldn't change a thing about it. I like it even more than "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" which is another Mason classic.
If you haven't seen it then without a doubt get it. It's great for the whole family. Nothing is excessive or would limit any age groups.
Classic film.......2007-05-18
This movie is a classic and should be in the library of any Jules Verne fan!
Journey to the Center of the Earth.......2007-05-13
What a great movie! I saw it on the big screen when I was a kid. I bought the DVD as soon as it came out. Beautiful scenery and some majestic shots. My favorite part is where they find all the crystals. OK, the story line is a little hokie and special effects don't measure up to today's standards but still a really good movie for the whole family. Watch the movie, eat popcorn, don't judge it by today's movies, enjoy. Where else are you going to get to see Pat Boone naked among a herd of sheep?

Corny but Good!.......2007-03-20
This isn't an oscar winning film but it's entertaining and fun if you like the Hercules or Zena Series type of shows. Same bad acting but for some reason I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the book even though it was altered alot. I guess so they could film in New Zealand. Don't expect alot from this film just simple fun!

Great outdoor scenes, and a good movie ...............2007-02-13
Maybe this 1959 version did not have a big budget like the other version with
Pat Boone, but after seeing again, i was pleasently surprise but some of
the caves and mountain scenes,,, as most of the movie is filmed in the great
outdoors the movie moves along pretty good. Always fun to watch a different
version of your favorite movie, and this one left me with a smile.
Great for the whole family. Enjoy
WHERE TIME BEGAN - FABULOUS JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EART.......2007-01-12
This is a low budget version of the 1959 classic Journey to the Center of the Earth. Similar plot with all the character going to the center of the earth & finding monsters. Some of the monsters are really cool to me while one of them , a King Kong ape wanna-be looks like Edward G Robinson and has a super goofy look to it. Characters and situations arent up to the 1959 version with James Mason (no remake to me has been nearly as good). I thought it was entertaining for the most part, & some changes in the story (the man from the future joining the foursome) and there was an uneccessary vomit scene, but overall not too bad. Better than a lot of J Piqor Simon movies like Pieces , the Unearthling, etc. This may have been his biggest budgeted movie for all I know.
It's Just Bad!!!!.......2006-10-19
This has got to be one of the top five worst movies of all time. They have some nerve using the same title as the classic Jules Vern movie (1959).My only recommendation is don't waste your time or money.
What happened?.......2006-02-02
Why does this release keeping getting dropped? I know the last time it turned out it was being released by some sort of bootleg company so it was stopped. I wish a company like Anchor Bay would get the rights to this film and release it already. It's a crucial 80s slasher to have in your collection.
NOT "WHERE TIME BEGAN".......2005-10-26
It's kind of amusing that everyone thinks that this version of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH starring EMO PHILLIPS is actually the spanish film WHERE TIME BEGAN. Of course it does not help that MGM and AMAZON have listed the credits for WHERE TIME BEGAN, which is also an adaption of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. This film is actually from 1988 and I think even more obscure than WHERE TIME BEGAN if such a thing is possible.
I bought this version knowing it was not WHERE TIME BEGAN. I wish it was WHERE TIME BEGAN because I love that film. I have never seen this 1988 version starring comedian EMO PHILLIPS but I have always wanted to.

Description
Jules Verne's landmark novel gains a fantastic new life in a tropical Hawaiian setting when a young, strong-willed English nanny accidentally joins two vacationing brothers exploring a cave on a deserted stretch of beach. Shortly after they enter, a volcanic eruption rocks the cave, opening a crack which turns out to be an ancient path downward. Short of water, food and daylight, the explorers use their sense of humor to keep their spirits up as they uncover an array of incredible and often dangerous discoveries. But nothing can prepare them for the ultimate discovery - the real city of Atlantis. Often idealized as paradise, the mythic civilization turns out to be anything but.

The Journey of a different kind!.......2006-11-10
I've been a Wakeman fan for decades now along with following his career with the YES. This DVD takes you on a journey back when Rick was expanding his solo career as a very young man back in the 70's. There's a section in the DVD where Rick and some of the other members of this concert actually get together years later and recall the fun they had remembering there tour around the world. Watching video's of some of their travels. I highly recommend this DVD for all you Wakeman fans out there.....
At last!.......2006-07-04
Great to see this at last! I can remember seeing it telecast in B&W when I was a kid and it has always stuck in my memory. Sound and (colour)picture is better than I expected, even with it's faults and considering the time it was made. I have been a Wakeman fan for years, and never once have I seen him either filmed or live, so it is great to see him contort himself while fiddling with knobs and making great music! Fantastic!
Annoying visuals in transitional passages.......2005-08-28
I have purchased this together with ELP's Pictures at an exhibition, released by the same company. It may be a little dangerous to generalize over merely two items, but the video effects added to these DVDs are very annoying. Although these 'effects' in this release are restricted to the transitional orchestral passages with narration, but I still feel uncomfortable. Narration itself is definitely not a top-class, compared to the original recording.
A more laid-back take on a 70's icon.......2005-07-04
I've been waiting to see this for 30 years - pretty much ever since I tried to play my first synthesizer; and the wait was worth every minute, and the price of admission. Sure, it's a bit campy, but if you've ever been to a Verdi opera or watched one with the (translated) lyrics on PBS, you know they're pretty campy too...but they've endured for a 150 years. It's just a matter of appreciating the music for what it is. If you yearn for and require great production values, don't, I repeat, don't buy this DVD. But if you can overlook the inflatable dinosaurs and the cheesy optical effects you'll get the chance to watch and enjoy a great musician (long hair, white cape and all) showing-off his chops.

Venture into the center of the earth, to a land where dinosaurs still roam and the threat of danger is always looming. Dr. Theodore Lytton (Treat Williams), a daring and courageous scientist, heads and expedition to find the missing husband of the rich and beautiful Alice Hastings. Joined by his bright, but inexperienced nephew, Jonas (Jeremy London), and the trailblazing guide McNiff, the team descends into the sweltering, unknown depths of the earth. In this underground world, where fierce dinosaurs thrive, they find the forceful and enterprising Casper Hastings (Bryan Brown) reigning over a primitive human civilization. Having made enemies with a neighboring village, and also with the Sauroids, a race of manlike reptiles, Casper's people are on the verge war. In their quest to return to the surface, the team's lives are threatened by savage tribal warriors, bloodthirsty raptors, and the fearsome Sauroids. Based on the Jules Verne classic, this action-packed and heart-pounding story is a timeless and unforgettable adventure.

Dig a deep hole and bury me please.......2006-04-02
Bury me, burn me, feed me to giant frogs, anything, ANYTHING to keep me from ever accidentally seeing this atrocity again. Prehistoric valley-cavegirls in styling mouse and sports bras, the silliest imaginable dialogs, k-mart costumes, pathetic special effects, direction so pedestrian it needs mowing down by a bus, and a script so bad it hurts the brain. PLEASE someone tell me how this can be from the same George Miller who gave us The Roiad Warrior? "Sleep with one eye open" the guide says. FINE, if i can watch this movie with BOTH EYES CLOSED (and the sound off). Rating: ZERO STARS. NO STARS. NEGATIVE 5 STARS. You owe US stars just for watching.
Indiana Jones Meets Lost World.......2005-10-10
1999 version of Journey To The Center of The Earth combined from TV drama series is not the usual dramatization of Jules Vernes classic. It is a bit skewed by recent movies such as Jurassic Park series. The location of the vocano is changed from Iceland to New Zealand hidden sanctuary to Mauri tribes. What surprises us most is human-like dinosaur as a result of "parallel evolution", which in itself is intriguing idea.
Verdict: Even being Jules Vernes novel fan the movies offer some surprises.
Rating: 75 out of 100. If the director ever able to revive the old Mauri tradition, he should get the Mrs. Hastings change her dress more fit to the journey.
Super Weak.......2005-07-17
A friend of mine rented this. I was expecting the newest "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2004), but was disappointed to see that it was this version. From the start with the cheesy looking title, I knew this was going to be "something special". I didn't hold the cheesy computer animation against it, but once the second half of the DVD started, it was all over. The big mess with the natives slows the movie's already molasses-like momentum to the speed of earth's continental plates, as mentioned in the movie.
The original movie's effects--seen as cheesy by action movie fanatics of this generation--were very good for that time period. Given that this movie was finished in 1999 shows that the computer effects were done with the remaining minute amount of the movie's budget.
Again, I don't hold the computer animation and the poor background (you can tell it's crinkled up paper for rocks in some instances); however the drawn-out plot makes me want to pull my hair out (or simply leave the room).
You CAN'T compare it with the original. Give it a chance!.......2005-04-03
I'm absolutely amazed at the overwhelming number of poor reviews this movie seems to have generated. I feel strongly that this movie has a lot going for it, but to truly appreciate it, you have to begin with one thing in mind: This is NOT the Jules Verne classic! This movie is not an attempt to re-create the original story (or even the classic movie starring James Mason), so if you purchase or rent this movie believing that is what you're going to find- forget it. It seems that the majority of reviewers are spending too much time trying to grade this movie against the original- their main dissapointment stemming from the fact that it is NOT the original. I believe, that if viewed as a stand-alone sci-fi miniseries, this has a lot going for it: A well-written story with interesting and well-balanced characters, stunning scenery and visual effects, a fine pacing, and interesting concepts. The "suarians" are very interesting creatures, and are visually stunning in execution. If the Krofft boys ever eventually get around to producing their "promised" LAND OF THE LOST movie, these creatures make a good basis for a more up-to-date Sleestak: fast, lethal, and deadly.
Perhaps no classic as the original, but..........2004-08-19
...my expectations were low, I haven't seen the original or red the book - so I actually enjoyed this movie. It's not Lord Of The Rings, but the effects are actually rather good, it starts a little slow, but after 30 minutes or so it becomes rather entertaining - the acting could have been better, but the cast function ok for a tv-production - I really liked the "underworld-ocean", in my opinion it looks beautiful, and the blue forest as well - the green creatures are done very good - but if you are curious on this movie, don't expect too much from a tv-production like this one is, but if you like adventure and fantasy - you might enjoy it as I did. It's highly recommended fot those who like Hallmark-productions.

Journey To The Bottom Of The Cesspool..........2005-05-29
Yikes! This one stinketh! Imagine a horridly dull room full of hideously dull people doing horrendously dull things. Now, imagine that this orgy of boredom can actually transport us into the far-flung future! JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF TIME is quite the bitter pill to swallow. It drags on endlessly, going nowhere, until finally fizzling into oblivion! If giant lizards and Lyle Waggoner do it for you, this could be your dream-come-true! Otherwise, it's a doggy-do sandwich for sure! No redeeming qualities whatsoever! Avoid with extreme prejudice...
The secrets of time travel revealed.......2004-02-22
Thanks to the 1967 low-budget film Journey to the Center of Time, I now know the secrets of time travel. I'm even willing to share them with you and spare you the burden of actually having to sit through this film. Now all of this is going to sound more expensive than it really is; if you follow the designs laid out in this movie, I think you're probably looking at less than a hundred bucks for the whole thing (except for the giant ruby power source - maybe you can steal one somewhere). You're going to need a "time vault" but that can be any room with an automatic door. Then you need a time lab to go inside the vault - this should be a circular room filled with all sorts of dials and gizmos that serve no purpose whatsoever; make sure some of them are housed behind cardboard-like control panels. You must paint the walls of the lab the ugliest burnt orange color you can find - that's important. Now take your big old ruby (no, I don't even want to know where you got it), put it inside a birdcage, and rest it on a stand in the middle of the lab. Buy a camera and put a TV screen on the wall somewhere (black and white, not color) - this is for the benefit of the folks in the "control room" (an even cheaper version of the time lab set); they, naturally, can see whatever your camera shows no matter how many millennia you travel in time away from them. Next, find some scientists; one should look a tad like Henry Kissinger if you want to do this right, but any young man and woman off the street will do for his assistants. Make sure they refer to the space-time continuum, stabilizers, and other fancy words like that all the time. You won't actually need a burly, antisocial misanthrope reluctantly funding the project, but if you have one handy go ahead and throw him in there with the scientists just to shake things up a little bit. There you go. Turn a few knobs, count down from ten, and enjoy your travels back and forth in time.
I'm quite sure your own time travel experience will exceed that of the characters in this film. Imagine traveling five thousand years into the future just to meet Lyle Waggoner (if you do meet him, though, try to spell his name right in the credits next time). The sight of a pasty-faced alien Lyle Waggoner is so repellant, that this film's characters travel millions of years backward in time just to get away from him. This also serves the purpose of introducing a dinosaur into the film; as we all know, any time travel movie simply must have a dinosaur in it. I understand the dinosaur union is very insistent on that.
Journey to the Center of Time basically exists to be made fun of, but the thing that bothered me most about this exceedingly low-budget flick was the fact that the writer started making stuff up at the end. I mean, he went way beyond paradox and half-baked theory and just threw in something completely impossible without even bothering to explain it (which he could not have done if he had tried). That rubbed me the wrong way and ruined the whole effect of the one decent plot twist he had just pulled off.
This is not the 'Time' travel movie to see.......2003-02-04
I purchased this movie for a measly sum of money, and since I'm a fan of bad movies, I wasn't really disappointed. Made in 1967, this film offers nothing new or interesting to the idea of time travel or science fiction.
The plot? "I just inherited all this money from my daddy, and I want to know what you deranged scientists are doing with it." and they respond thusly; "We're travelling through time with it, here we'll show you right after we bore you with Einstein quotes. Whoops!" etc.
Disappointingly long and oft-times mistaken dialogue, this movie joureys to an extremely boring future that does include, as a highlight, an attractive alien spacecraft and its attractive female leader. This is subsequently destroyed by the low-brow humans of the future. The crew then attempts to go home, but overshoots into the far past with dinasaurs. The film-makers should have taken the cue from 'Journey To The Center Of The Earth' with Pat Boone, and not used a pet lizard to play a dinosaur. It always looks ludicrous, and it is no exception in this film. I won't give anymore spoilers, just don't pay good money to purchase it with out prior knowledge.
This must have been the Canadian prototype for ýTime Tunnel........2002-04-01
To say this was low budget would be too kind. The stereotype acting is not stereotype enough. The stereotype actors are not stereotype enough. Let's face it; this whole stereotype project is not stereotype enough. If the budget was just a tad lower maybe this would never have been made.
Basic premise is an attempt to look into the future and into the past actually forces the lab to go into the future into the past. The lab is stuffed with good guy, bad guy, and screaming girl. The good guy does good things. The bad guy does bad things. The girl screams a lot. While back at the ranch, they talk of a lot about how they've lost the lab.
This DVD is perfect for testing the fast forward option.

A classic tale of adventure, told well enough.......2005-12-27
The animation hasn't aged too well, but it's a classic tale of adventure, and all in all is executed well. Not too scary for younger viewers, my 7 year old liked it a lot. A nice alternative to the usual spongebob fare.

A classic and a B-movie........2006-09-19
Things to Come, the movie, is a mixture of two of H.G. Wells's books. The first part is out of The War In The Air. The idea is that the nations of the world end up starting a war very much like the First World War but with more powerful weapons, mostly in the form of aircraft, which causes civilization to fall. The war scenes, some of them footage of real military equipment and others very cool looking models, seem very realistic. In the end, H.G. Wells's other book, The Shape Of Things To Come, is brought into the movie. The book is about the wonderful, bright, future and the film shows a future where airmen have joined together in their wish to bring peace to the world, using science and bravery, by overthrowing the old ways and the old world. In the end mankind takes the first steps to the stars.
The second movie is called Journey To The Center Of Time. The idea is that scientists are trying to find a way to peek into the past or the future. But an accident breaks the lab away from the present, tossing it into the river of time and space, first far into the future and then back into the past. There seem to be some complaints that dinosaurs did not exist one million years BC but nobody says the giant lizard is a dinosaur. It fact it could be a giant Komodo Dragon.
OK, maybe I am being silly, but outside of the somewhat bad science, the movie isn't that bad. It isn't great but it isn't that bad. I remember seeing a part of it as a kid and being impressed that the bad guy ended up killing himself.
On the other hand I am not too impressed by the new lab coming out of no where. Maybe the movie producers wrote themselves into a corner and they had to find a way out?
This disc was worth getting used but don't buy it new without a REALLY good reason.
A Spark Of Interest Marks This Dreck.......2006-01-01
JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF TIME is one of those cheaply made science fiction films whose miniscule budgets are matched only by an equally miniscule plot, direction, scripting, and acting. In this clunker, Scott Brady is your typically beefy industrialist whose only connection to the advancement of science is the financial bottom line. His unwillingness to open the vaults of further funding forces his scientists, lamely played by Gigi Perreau and Anthony Eisley, to prematurely loop ahead to the future in a time machine. Naturally, there is a mishap that lands then squarely in a nuclear war, whose own weirdly made up leaders (Lyle Waggonner and Pouppe Gamin) do little more than prance about for their few minutes of screen time. Brady and his time travelling cohorts travel back to 1,000,000 BC where they meet dinosaurs. Apparently, the script writers failed to indicate that the dinosaurs died out when a comet smacked into the earth 65 million years ago. At this point, whatever plot coherence there was dissolves into a misty mess of chintzy special effects whose only apparent purpose is to divert the viewer's attention from the T-Rex size plot holes. Further complicating matters is a series of potentially interesting temporal paradoxes that might have engaged the viewer had the script respected his intelligence to the point of incorporating them into a coherent plot. By the final reel, the viewer is asked to accept yet again another dopey science fiction cop out ending of How We All Began. JTTCOT had the potential to be more than all hands concerned made it. But because it groped, however dimly, toward Saying Something Interesting, I gave it two stars.
What are they thinking?.......2004-07-02
This is a review of the combined product and the rating has no relationship to the individual movies. Some one is getting over zealous they just tied a Sci-Fi Classic "Things to Come" to a lackluster dud "Journey to the Center of Time". Just incase some one has not pointed out the differences. I figure there was room left over on the DVD and instead of adding extras they would fill the space with no cost fluff. You will want to look at the reviews for the individual movies before buying this hybrid or low-breed.
Gave 1 star because I can't give a zero........2003-06-12
Poor quality film. Poor DVD transfer. No Extras. Waste of time. At least I didn't throw a lot of money away on it. Terrible film.
Cheap Rip-Off.......2003-03-08
This double feature by (shudder) Madacy contains two amazingly poor looking films: "Things to Come" and "Journey to the Center of Time." "Things to Come" is a thought provoking film based on H.G. Welles's book "The Shape of Things to Come," but you wouldn't be able to tell it by this shoddy transfer in which none of the dialogue is even understandable and the picture is dark. A much nicer version is available from Image Entertainment/Wade Williams Collection. Get it.
"Journey to the Center of Time" is a terrible, lifeless, shamefully low budget film in which almost nothing happens. Despite the box's claim that it's "Stimulating, exciting, and great fun!", there is not a speck of entertainment to be had (unless you count Lyle Waggoner's cameo. I didn't). The transfer fares slightly better, but it's still barely watchable.
There are a few extras, too. A Sci-Fi Oscar Winners Index, Sci-Fi Common Themes, Special FX Notes, and Trivia Questions. They're not very good at all, but at least they're reasonably abundant.
