Customer Reviews:
Not nearly as good as the previous 3 years..........2007-02-06
Season 4 of Andromeda was a disappointment as compaired the the outstanding previous 3 seasons. The music this season does not match the series and sounds more like music that should be played in a western movie. I hope they improve for the 5th and final season.
Must have for Sci Fi Buffs.......2007-01-04
I enjoyed this series when it was on television, and had to add it to my library when it became available on DVD. The acting is very good, the stories are interesting. Well worth the price...Kevin Sorbo can play a captain as well as a mythical hero. The humor is very good as well as the action.
Great Series.......2006-10-01
I am disappointed on the loss of Tyr I thought he was an outstanding character played by a great actor. Rhade is is a character I think should have been in as a regular a couple seasons back as he seemed to fit in with the crew and the storylines. His introduction to this season was a bit shaky concerning the story but what the hay he's on board. Cobb trading Sci-Fi for a Soap Opera doesn't seem a good trade as I am sure the soap operas would have waited. I would have liked to have seen the Tyr character interact with Rhade through a couple seasons. With thier differing outlooks/ philosophies it would have made for great stories. I feel that they should just drop the Rev Ben character once and for all for as he evolves he bocomes less interesting and bringing him in for a story or two here and there totally changing the once strong idealist into the weak thing that I saw was just annoying.
-The last episode in this series was very confusing to me but I am sure it will be explained in the next season.
a downward spiral.......2006-08-10
Some shows start out bland and get better as they mature. Others start out at their peak and get progressively worse as time goes on. Andromeda is one of the latter kinds.
Season 4 saw Andromeda degenerate into an incoherent mess. The show's earlier seasons had their fair share of bad episodes, but they were often bad because of poor execution or oversimplification in favor of action. Season 4's episodes often just don't make any sense or don't have any relevance - they are very much mindless action hour fare.
When I first saw season 4, I had not yet seen season 3, so I assumed there would be things that I would have missed and that wouldn't make quite as much sense to me as they would have if I had seen the 3rd season first. But now that I've seen season 3, I have to say that season 4 *still* doesn't make any sense. Too many things were invented on the fly and then placed into the story as if they had always been there without any further explanation. Ironically, these self-contained action hours rely on the ability of the audience to pick up in the middle of an existing story every bit as much as arc-based storytelling would have. The only difference is that arc-based storytelling is interesting to long-term viewers and spontaneously invented backstory isn't.
One of the most severe blows to the show came in the loss of Keith Hamilton Cobb. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that the loss of Tyr Anasazi was a big reason for the loss of quality. Season 1 had an excellent combination with Dylan Hunt as the idealist who was occasionally willing to compromise his ideals to get the job done, Rev Bem as the center of highest ideals, and Tyr Anasazi as a primarily self-interested, realistic balance. The show was able to stay afloat despite the departure of the Rev Bem character, because it still had Dylan's idealism against Tyr's realism. Season 4 changes all that. With Tyr gone, completely gone is much of what gave the series its initial potential.
Even in some of the first 3 seasons' worst episodes, you would have great lines like, "[when the universe ends] there will be 3 survivors: Tyr Anasazi, the cockroaches, and Dylan Hunt, trying to save the cockroaches." But season 4 has lost that in favor of Telemachus Rhade, who simply doesn't have the same Nietzschean flair that Tyr had. In fact, Telemachus is rarely ever interesting. His banter with Harper borders on laughably pathetic, with such lines as "Insulting a Nietzschean is not healthy for a human's health."
But even without that foil, all would not have been lost except for the pseudo-continuity and constant introduction of characters that we've never heard of as if we should know who they are. The first episode of the season introduces a number of new characters but acts as if they've been there all along, and it was frankly just weird. When I first saw it, I assumed that characters such as Tri-Jema and others had been introduced in season 3, but in fact they weren't and they all made their first appearances in season 4.
Tarazed, a planet last mentioned in season 2's "Home Fires" - and a planet that chose *NOT* to join the re-established Commonwealth in that episode - is all of a sudden the seat of Commonwealth government.
Tri-Camille "displaces" her "sister" Tri-Ortiz, presumably a reference to the Isabella Ortiz in season 2, but there are problems with this that should be obvious to anyone who's actually watched that season 2 episode.
We also now have melting Abyss people, and the first time this happens no one acts as if it's out of the ordinary despite the fact that it had never happened before in any season of the show. Then there's the dozens of people that Dylan "knows" but we've never seen before. Exactly when did he meet them? Don't forget, this guy doesn't have 40-odd years of time behind him, since he was frozen in time for 300 years.
There's the sudden introduction of a bad guy group called "Collectors" who have never before been a remotely bad presence, and we've now got "radical isotopes" and 3-d cubes as instant bad guy detectors.
The season's biggest failure is that, despite some major events like the Commonwealth descending into civil war, none of this is really leading anywhere. Sure, the new Commonwealth is practically in chaos (or is it? this season makes it hard to tell), but I'd be hard-pressed to tell you why that matters. Along the same lines: Rev Bem makes an appearance this season, and at the end of his episode, he says he wants to stay on the Andromeda, but he never appears again for the rest of the season.
I suppose I could be asking too much. How much story can you really expect from a show whose title says, "The universe is a dangerous place. We fight to make it safe"?
With those criticisms voiced, I will say that there are still some good moments in this season. The last few episodes of the season are pretty good, even if the last two kind of start acting like the whole "restoring the Commonwealth" thing was not what Dylan was *really* supposed to be doing all this time (what?!). One of them even has a pretty good scene that makes fun of technobabble and the absurdly precise time estimates until disaster that are common in Star Trek.
And one thing that all Andromeda episodes have going for them is that even the worst episodes tend to be far more entertaining than your average Star Trek fare.
Still, this one is hard to recommend as a purchase, even for fans of the series (though I guess it depends on why you like the show).
On the DVD side of things, the discs are double-sided, which cuts down on the amount of packaging but makes the discs far more prone to damage. There are annoying ads at the beginning of the discs that will be completely irrelevant in a few years, but they are fortunately easily skipped with the chapter skip. Although I haven't watched very many of them, there also seems to be a lot of special feature content like interviews and stuff.
Andromeda Season 4 great! - ADV Film DVD quality - not!.......2006-07-20
Great series. First couple of episodes struggle a bit with the departure of Tier. I didn't care for the way they brought him back into the series for a couple episodes - I think they could have done more with his character. Still a great series which ended far too soon.
But I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the product side of the DVD set. ADV films seems to have a real quality control problem. If one pays almost $60 for a DVD set, one should expect pretty flawless performance when playing. But I found defective disks. Amazon is greatly to be commended as their customer service did all they could to make it right. Amazon has excellant customer service and I applaud them. But ADV Films, since they went to the silly double-sided DVDs, seems to have quality control problems and ship sets with defective disks. Anyone purchasing the set - I would recommend that you spend the first hour starting each episode to see that it plays so that if you have to return the set, you can do so quickly. I found on disk 1 side A two episodes would play flawlessly while the middle episode would skip/freeze and generally create errors which kept me from actually watching the episode. Its sad that the DVD product of such a great series should suffer so.

Not Gene's best work..........2007-05-30
I found the show to be badly marketed, and the use of CGI instead of miniatures stole some of the watchability. Gimme Star Trek or Firefly anyday, a good sci-fi show should mimic westerns. I wonder if reviewers of this show enjoyed Godzilla movies...
Andromeda, Keepin it ROCKIN!.......2006-02-24
Andromeda, back in its final season with a bang! Sure the show lost a chunk of the budget that they have had with previous seasons but that doesn't stop the writers from coming up with a nice season long story arc which delivers! Any sci-fi fan with a love of action should add this volume to their collection. Andromeda just plain ROCKS! (4 stars because we should be on collection 5 by NOW!)

Customer Reviews:
Overall, enjoyable episodes.......2004-06-14
Even though the series was going in a new direction during Season 3, it did have some great moments. Now that season 4 has passed and the show is distinctly different, we can say season 3 was the last of the Robert Hewitt Wolfe Era.
The Right Horse. In this episode, a man is being held on Veritas for stealing DNA secrets from TechnoCorps. Abel Ladrone was a man Beka had a crush on for years and given the direction of season 3, this was explored too much. The show set up Beka's friends against her (as she was leading with her hormones and not her brain) and the people of Veritas against the Andromeda and TechnoCorps against them all. This episode is a B level ep.
What Happens To A Rev Deferred. This show was done in response to all the fans who missed Rev after Brent Strait left the show in Ouroborus (Season 2). Essentially the crew receives a message from Rev Bem on a doomed world and they go and find them. It's a clip show with some new material. In the end, Rev is changed by some entity and we never hear about it much again. This is a C level episode. But still enjoyable.
Point of the Spear. This show was actually pretty good. The planet of Samsara (likely named after Sorbo's wife. Sam is his wife's name, Sara was her Andromeda character's name) is being threatened by the Pyrians who are wanting to pyroform (as opposed to terraform) the planet. But they are being led by someone suspiciously like Trance. In the end, Dylan faces a difficult choice of how to deal with an unsolvable problem. His choice would send a message. I give this one an A.
Vault 0f The Heavens. This episode was written by Harper. Well, the actor of course. It's very much a fantasy story, not quite in the mold of Andromeda. Dylan hears a voice directing him to a planet where the queen must mate in order to spread her energy to re-energize her people. I give this one a C.
Deeep Midnight's Voice. Here the Drago Kazov are looking for a slip scout that had been traveling slipstream from before the fall. The information it has would allow someone to predict slipstream and allow AIs to navigate cleanly. Very valuable. It was found on an Earth like planet that has limited technology. The B story has the beginning of intrigue regarding Tyr and the fulfillment of his plans which are explored by the end of the season. Unfortunately, the series never kept with this theme. I'd also give this an A.
Collection 3-4.......2004-04-23
The Right Horse - Beka endangers the crew of Andromeda and even an entire planet by protecting Able Ladrone, a part love accused of stealing secret DNA. Interesting story with insight into Beka's character with a surprise twist at the end.
What Happens To A Rev Deferred - Dylan and the crew receive a cry from a long lost friend - Rev Bem. Excellent episode dealing with the return of Rev Bem, a tranformation and a hint of Trance's true nature.
Point of the Spear - Dylan and the crew battle the Pyrians to save the planet Samsarra and avoid a galactic war. Excellent action episode with the ebb and flow of battle. Again, a hint of Trance's true nature and the battle to come.
Vault 0f The Heavens - Dylan is beckoned by the voice of a mysterious woman to an icy moon orbiting a giant, fiery planet. Dylan saves an entire race. Strong episode with some interesting science (I'm an armchair reader of physics) behind it.
Deeep Midnight's Voice - Dylan and the crew search for a Nietzchean slip-scout carrying a probe that can map the slipstream - a power that could change the universe. Excellent episode where we see a planet unaware of what is our there and the first hints of Tyr's plans.
Andromeda Fanatic.......2004-04-04
As usual fairly vague pre-release description. But it's a quick heads up that they've sent the disc gold. Usually more specific info at www.advfilms.com, but be forewarned ADV's interface is really bad. But once you are able to locate the "correct" page at the site it'll at least give you episode numbers and trailer blurbs. Counting down.
I know.......2004-03-18
I agree with John Keitz, there is not enough information about this DVD. However if you click on the picture you can see that it is Season 3 Collection 4 (well atleast according to the picture).
Who Knows?.......2004-03-11
I wanted to review this DVD. I really wanted to pre-order this DVD, but there is not enough information in the description. Andromeda Season 3, Volume WHAT? If this is volume 3.4, I would really like to order it. Unfortunately, I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING! What's the deal with this description? Just a bit vague, don't you think?

confusion.......2004-05-09
I think it is amazing the amazon can't seem to get this right. Is it collections? Is it 2.1, 2.2, etc? I took a tip from other reviews and went to bestbuy and got what I want. It was more expensive, but my time is a premium to me. All I wanted was order. Good luck finding it here.
Confusion still rules.......2004-04-09
After spending more time than I would like to admit, on trying to figure out what combination of Andromeda Season 2 Volumes and or Collections I would have to order to end up with a complete Season 2, I stumbled upon the customer reviews for Season 2 Collection 4. I was amazed that people were having the same problem over 6 months ago. What is amazing is that Amazon has yet to fix the problem. I guess I'll give up like they did and buy this at Best Buy.
We want to know the EPISODE NUMBERS!.......2004-01-25
A couple of the reviews below pointed out why I didn't buy this from Amazon. I don't know what I'm getting. I know the EPISODE sequence of the show. I know what I don't have...I DON'T know that this collection will give me EP
The Dance of the Mayflies
In Heaven Now are Three
The Fair Unknown
Immaculate Perception
The Knight, Death and the Devil
And if I don't KNOW that I'm going to get it from Amazon I'm not buying from them.
I'll buy mine elsewhere.......2003-11-08
If Amazon isn't going to correct this problem then I'll purchase mine elsewhere.
Andromeda: Season 2, Collection 4.......2003-11-08
This is not so much a review as an explanation of the "error" described in the prior review posted by another customer. There is not really an "error" on the part of the manufacturer, but rather confusion in the way our partners at Amazon.com have chosen to list the products.
I have tried to explain this "problem" to Amazon's customer service group before, but failed to get the point across.
The Andromeda series is being offered up in two separate DVD "formats", if you will... One being in "volumes" which contain two episodes on a single DVD and the other being "collections" containing four or five episodes on two DVD's.
Amazon has mis-matched these and the listing for "collection" number four shows the cover art for "volume" four - this is why the episodes don't match.
Since I could not get Amazon Customer Service to acknowledge the problem and tell me which was the collection and which was the volume, I just bought the title at my local Best Buy.
It turned out the collections were cheaper at BB and with no shipping charges.

No sci-fi show can be without a trial episode accusing someone of past crimes. "Forced Perspective" sees Dylan accused of a 300-year-old war atrocity and having to argue the case from very peculiar perspectives. This episode feels like filler, but the viewer ought to pick up on two important aspects of the show happening on the periphery. What's going on between Tyr and Beka? Even more importantly, what's going on with Trance? An interesting reversal of roles is presented to Dylan when an organized group of machines offer for him to join their Consensus of Parts. Neither is fully willing to join the other, however, and so "The Sum of Its Parts" turns out to be less than either hoped for. This episode was another cowritten by a noted science fiction author, and Steven Barnes injects some welcome introspection into the proceeding story arc. "Fear and Loathing in the Milky Way" is experienced by all following the return of the Eureka Maru's original commissioning lowlife, Gerentex ("Under the Night"). Trance's deft sleight of hand helps at the casino tables, while Harper's wisecracking front finally slips to reveal a man capable of action in a tight spot. We also learn exactly how Beka practices Valentineology. At long last we learn Rev's full name (Reverend Behemiel) and get a fuller explanation of his Wayist belief. "The Devil Take the Hindmost" reveals Jesus to be one of the revered Saints, too. This was actually one of the first plot lines considered for the show, but Rev's character has had to wait until now for a proper spotlight. --Paul Tonks

Customer Reviews:
Not so good.......2003-03-29
This show is a pale imitation of other sci fi shows. The episodes in this volume are probably some of the better ones. Of course, that's not saying much. It's a shame that this show continues while good sci fi shows,i.e. Farscape, are cancelled.
Be prepared for disappointment........2003-03-25
The Andromeda DVDs have been somewhat of a disappointment to me, this one, 1.4 more so then the other. The episodes themselves are in wonderful quality and are the main reason I bought the DVD.
However the limited number of episodes on each disk is appalling. And the extras on it, doesn't even come close to making up for the lack of them. The bloopers were short, and were mostly of Kevin Sorbo. The behind the scenes of the alien makeup seemed promising, however was less then five minutes. And then there was the fact that I could never find the commentary for "Fear & Loathing in the Milky Way."
So my advice to you is, if you are truly an Andromeda fan, then this is something for you. But be prepared for disappointment.

Gene Roddenberry has another classic with Sorbo.......2005-11-27
I tend to think of this show as Hercules in space. If you don't take it too seriously it is right up there with Star Trek, Star Gate, B5 and Farscape. It's fun to watch. By the great bird of the Galaxy don't pay full price for it. I purchased this for $7 at Best Buy last week. Season Two was $14.99. Wait for those prices to drop. It's only a matter of time before these sets reach the Under $20 category. Shop around!

Going Beyond Space and Time.......2005-03-20
I never got the chance to watch this series during its original run on cable and my first experience of this series was on DVD and after watching this series in its entirety (through Season 4) I must say that the ending to Season 4 was much too negative for a series to end like that.
I don't plan on wasting my time picking up the Season 5 DVD's because the whole premise of Season 5 about a darker universe and being trapped within a single solar system is too absurd for a science fiction series too remain too limited to a single plot thread.
While this has been an enjoyable series I think there should have been some resolution during the last episode but it was a very nice ending to the series considering that with Season 5, the directors, producers and creative team seem to run out of story ideas much like what happened with Season 5 of Babylon 5.
All in all, Andromeda (Season 1-4) deserves one of my best recommendations, if you're looking for a new series to get into. If you're looking for an original science fiction series to watch that doesn't contrain itself to the norm (i.e., Star Trek) than I'd suggest such shows as Andromeda, Farscape, Stargate SG-1, Firefly, Roswell, Dark Angel and Babylon 5 (Season 1-4). These are highly recommendable shows and deserve a special look.
A pretty good finale for an average season.......2005-03-04
Again, a great set quality wise. Top video and sound as usual.
Season one is still the best in my eyes and season three following that. Season four has been mainly lacklustre and has lost much of my interest with only a few good episodes. It became plodding and unfocused for many episodes. However, the last two final episodes are pretty good, if a bit Babylon 5-eque in some ways (B5 is still he best show out there BTW). We have lots of action and feel for the characters, especially Dillon.
Spoiler warning - so don't read after this if you don't want to!
I still can't help but wonder why Trance didn't just do what she did far sooner, even seasons ago! And why does the final episode have to be so tragic? Many needless deaths I feel. I was hoping for Tier to come back after surviving his fall somehow, to create a nice three-way battle, but no. When he left is when things went slowly downhill. This looks like a definite ending to me... I wonder what this studio will be up to next.

Thumbs up.......2004-08-29
I loved this colection! Especialy since I missed the beginning of season 4. Can't wait for the others.
Half the program is was last season.......2004-08-18
The first 5 episodes of season 4 are a great disappointment. Like the tinny music that is suppose to heighten the drama, all the episodes are 'out of tune' so to speak. Perhaps it is because the episodes are about 40 minutes a piece, but it all seems to be sped up.
The element of drama is missing. Andromeda has always had humor and it is not a heavy SciFi program, but these shows have no drama or tension. In one episode, the ship Andromeda is going to crash into a moon. The crew must blow up two devices on the moon that are causing this crisis. However, it all seems to be a lark for the crew. Becka and Harper go off to scavenge another crashed ship and the mad genius villian can't figure out that there are explosives on his key weapons.
The villians are all controlled by the Magog 'Deity' whose only desire is to kill Dylan Hunt. If the Magog Diety can control all these people across vast distances of space, why can it not kill Dylan. There are more inconsistencies. Harper somehow now has a mother. I thought his parents died. Andromeda is not a show you watch for logic, but it normally keeps to the story line.
Dylan is diminished and Becka is just now silly. I even found it hard to understand what had just happened in parts.
Hopefully the series will improve.
