Considering the lofty expectations that preceded it, The Matrix Reloaded triumphs where most sequels fail. It would be impossible to match the fresh audacity that made The Matrix a global phenomenon in 1999, but in continuing the exploits of rebellious Neo (Keanu Reeves), Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) as they struggle to save the human sanctuary of Zion from invading machines, the codirecting Wachowski brothers have their priorities well in order. They offer the obligatory bigger and better highlights (including the impressive "Burly Brawl" and freeway chase sequences) while remaining focused on cleverly plotting the middle of a brain-teasing trilogy that ends with The Matrix Revolutions. The metaphysical underpinnings can be dismissed or scrutinized, and choosing the latter course (this is, after all, an epic about choice and free will) leads to astonishing repercussions that made Reloaded an explosive hit with critics and hardcore fans alike. As the centerpiece of a multimedia franchise, this dynamic sequel ends with a cliffhanger that virtually guarantees a mind-blowing conclusion. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Awesome picture and sound quality!.......2007-06-27
This movie on HD-DVD is outstanding. It's really like seeing it for the first time all over again compared to standard definition. But not just for the incredible picture detail, but equally important is the major improvement in the sound.
I would highly recommend this to anyone that is looking for the current standard in HD-DVD PQ, SQ and it is a good movie also.
Disappointing - The Matrix is out of sync.......2007-06-27
I was very disappointed with The Matrix. While the quality of the video transfer is excellent, the audio is slightly out-of-sync, which makes it difficult to watch at times. This is not an issue with either Reloaded or Revolutions.
I don't understand how something like this could have happened. The flagship movie of the three has got serious audio problems. Very disappointing.
I give the whole set a 3, but for The Matrix it deserves much lower than that. It's too bad too, because if The Matrix were in sync, then I'd give the whole set a much better grade.
STUNNING!.......2007-06-26
All I can say is ... it was as good as watching it in the theatre for the first time. Amazing HD conversion ... superior audio quality ... Absolutely stunning!
I should add that I watched all three of these in my xbox 360 HD-DVD (fully patched) and I had ZERO problems with any of these discs. I don't know why these others are having issues.

The Disc that will Undo HD DVD.......2007-06-26
I am SO ANGRY with this release. Not ONE of the HD sides of these movies play in my 360 Add On - all the SD sides play fine ....great. I have both Blu Ray and HD DVD , and from now on I am abandoning HD DVD as a format - Blu Ray deserves to win the war, and I am so sorry to say that as I am NOT a Sony fan boy. SHAME on every company associated with this buggy, defective rubbish release of what should have been HD DVD's finest moment so far. Consider the HD war over - mark my words, in 2 years no one will remember the "HD DVD" format.
The Matrix in HD.......2007-06-15
The pros and cons of the Matrix trilogy have been argued ad nauseum, so I will limit myself to the HD-DVD version.
The transfer to HD of these movies is astounding. The sound is crystal clear and the picture is stunning (in 1080). The reflections caught in Morpheus' sunglasses and the individual clarity of water drops brings these already visually stunning movies to another level.
My nitpick is with certain special effects, notably the bullet-time effect. When transferred to HD the bullet-time effect looks slightly grainy and pixelated compared to the rest of the film.
Nitpicks aside, this is still a very entertaining movie trilogy and the HD experience makes it exponentially better.

when comparing the standard dvd to the hd dvds of these movies, this is as close to film you will get,the picture is eye popping to say the least.the audio is dolby digital true hd,the other wow factor with hd dvd.reliving the matrix movies again is like seeing them for the first time again.as we know thers a format war going on with hd dvd vs blu-ray dvd.many blu-ray supporters will tell you there camp is winning because blu-ray has more studio support.fret not that can change in a ny min.amazon offers some of the best prices on the net for hd dvd.the toshbia hd-a2 below 299.00,which is far better then blu-ray starting at 499.00.theres no need to wait to see whos gonna win this format war,the risk is small,hd dvd is the way to go. plus other great titles.the matrix trilogy being one of them.if you have a hdtv, dont wait pick a format and see what you have been missing.the matrix trilogy...5 stars
THE MATRIX AS IT WAS MEANT TO BE SEEN.......2007-06-27
First let me say I know there are alot of people out there who think only the first movie in this trilogy is any good. I somewhat agree with that statement. True the sequels were not as good as whole movies as the first. But they are full of scenes that rule, and with the power of a DVD remote I become the ultimate film editor. Ill skip boring sequences and just get right to good stuff. Sometimes in reloaded I forget Zion even exists cause I skip right thru it. The picture quality is amazing on all 3 movies and I use it for demo material to show off my system all the time. I highly recommend this purchase.
Matrix in HD. Nuff said........2007-06-26
There really isn't much to say about this box set. You get all three Matrix movies in full high-definition, as well as three separate In-Movie Experience tracks along with all the same great supplements that came with the DVD version. At $65 it's a little pricey, but this is as cheap as it gets and fans of the Matrix won't be disappointed.

The ultimate sc-fi adventure for adults in one box set!.......2007-07-04

QUE PASA CON LA GENTE LATINA????.......2007-06-27
ESTE DVD CONTIENE TODO EL MATERIAL ADICIONAL QUE UNO DESEA PERO LAMENTABLEMENTE LAS PRODUCTORAS SE OLVIDAN O A MI PARECER SIMPLEMENTE NO LES INTERESA EL PUBLICO LATINO Y POR LO TANTO NO HAY SUBTITULOS EN CASTELLANO MAS QUE SIMPLEMENTE EN LAS PELICULAS Y ASI NO ES, NO ME PARECE JUSTO YA QUE NOSOTROS TAMBIEN SOMOS UN GRAN PUBLICO QUE CONSUME ESTOS PRODUCTOS Y POR CONSIGUIENTE NO APOYAMOS A LA PIRATERIA.
Great collection for what you are paying for. .......2007-06-21
All aesthetics aside with the nice hologram box and interesting boxing it all comes in, this series of movies (or trilogy... *awaiting the e-bashing from star wars fans* )is a great collection to own.
Apart from the movies themselves, they all come with revisited discs which go into the background of each movie as well as a seperate box for documentaries on the background of character development, social/philosophical references, set design and visual technology make this a gem of a collection to own.
Top that off with the official animatrix all included in this boxset, you are left with the entire story and background from the movies seires.
To be honest with you, I dont feel the need to watch an entire movie over with commentary from the directors. I feel its a waste of time and if i do look for a particular scene's meaning I would just go to the scene instead of watching the whole thing. Each to their own though.
As are most of my reviews, a lot rides on the price of the boxset. I payed $37 dollars for it and i feel it was worth every penny. Definatly a set I will be holding onto for a while to watch with friends for a few years to come.
If you are looking to get the movies ONLY (which I'm sure a lot of the extras will come with on their extra's disc's) then maybe buying the movies seperatly is for you. However, the slight price difference gives you hours more of entertainment and a broader understanding of the saga.
The Matrix Trilogy and Bonus DVDs.......2007-05-25
The trilogy is very good and Keanu Reeves is a good action actor in the trilogy.
Great.......2007-05-16
Very good. Obviously, towards the end they got worse and actually a little boring, but otherwise matrix and matrix reloaded were very good, and the first part of matrix revolutions was good. animatrix is very entertaining(some of them), but some are a bit strange for me.

"me, me, me ...... me too".......2007-06-23
The Matrix Reloaded has one thing that simply stands out throughout the movie - complete eye candy. Its true, while the first Matrix brought about new origins in movie animation and cgi, Matrix Reloaded takes it x100. The action is amazing, it will blow you away almost to the point that you've had enough. Major action and visual effects fans will dig this. True harcorde fans of the Matrix story might be dissapointed.
The story almost takes a backseat to the action. The plot is dragged out throughout huge action scenes that seem to never end - example- Neo vs dozens of Smiths lasting forever, and the highway chase that lasts as long as I-95 runs. While these scenes are truly spectacular, they take away from the story somewhat. Gone is the great in depth exploration into the Matrix. Very little is newly introduced to us about the Matrix, and the story now focuses on Neo and the rest of humanity saving itself from destruction, both from the machines in the real world, and Smith in the Matrix world. We do get to meet the architect of the Matrix, though not as astounding as one would think.
Overall this is not as good as the first one, but you'll still want to see it to see how the trilogy continues. If you love never-ending action and cgi, you will want to watch this over and over and over. The movie is worth buying on that regard. As for a compeleing story, you might be ok stopping after the first Matrix and being satisfied. If you do see Reloaded, you'll have to see Revolutions too, since both technically are one big film split into 2 parts.
Cool Action but Silly and Pretentious.......2007-05-19
The first MATRIX film was interesting but I felt they held too much info back for too long. By the time you understood the story, the movie was over.
By the second movie, THE MATRIX RELOADED, the filmmakers got caught up in their own pretentious premise. The dialogue just plays flat and weird. Keanu Reeves looks either deep or...blank. Couldn't tell which most of the time. The truly-odd "Rave Scene" was so primitive and even bestial that I wondered why humans needed to survive at all. Maybe the machines were on to something to exterminate such rampant barbarism and partying.
The action scenes were very cool and the special effects extremely interesting. I'm sure the filmmakers turned to talented effects people to shoot those scenes.
If only they had turned to talented sci-fi writers to flesh out their script.
Needless to say, this was the last MATRIX movie I saw in a theatre.
An Exercise In Franchise Annihilation..........2007-04-09
"Reloaded" turns out to be a whopping disappointment. I caught the midnight preview of this movie and was expecting a satisfying sequel building from the strengths of the first Matrix film, which was an instant sci-fi/action classic. Instead, we were treated to a terribly botched effort. Apparently, the first film was a fluke for the Wachowskis, whose writing and character building skills simply evaporated after the smash success of the first film. Alongside the likewise awful "Matrix: Revolutions", the once promising team proceeded to demolish the legacy of what could have been the next "Star Wars Trilogy". Hence, a potential all-time classic series of Matrix films was not to be. What went wrong?
Plenty.
For starters, the original characters were not refreshed or developed adequately. We fully expect to see Neo's awesome powers on full display, and here the Wachowskis do not disappoint. However, the Neo character remains virtually the same, his realization that the Oracle's prediction was correct and that he truly is "The One" failed to boost his confidence or convince him to truly lead his comrades towards victory against the machines ( Imagine Luke Skywalker in "Return Of The Jedi" still behaving like a whining farm boy). Instead, Neo takes a back seat to Morpheus again. The relationship between Neo and Trinity is still flat, I sensed no on-screen chemistry between the two at any time.
The supporting cast have a small degree of development, but it is too little, too late as the movie plods along between killer (if not cliché) action sequences. Central character Agent Smith is altered into a more powerful "Smith", OK. This classic villain has been ruined by an awful script long on existential rhetoric but short on captivation. The CGI "Squidies" are badly overdone here as well as in "Revolutions". We expect to see more sophisticated and diverse machines introduced, especially in a world of machines such as this. Instead, the squidies are the only muscle the machine empire can produce to combat the Zionites. The program-run-amok characters such as the Merovingian are silly and lame.
This movie was a financial blockbuster due mainly to the action sequences, which were superb despite the overdone CGI effects. It's a shame that the excellent storyline introduced in the first movie was thoroughly trashed beginning with this sequel and continuing into the third and (thankfully) final installment.
Good Series.......2007-04-02
A must have. Has some great scenes.
Not quite as good overall as the first installment but still great.
It's a (good) MOVIE, not a pholosophy book........2007-03-03
First off, I will say that I enjoyed these movies as great entertainment.
I realize that for some people, these movies are vehicles for philosophy for you. We each have different vehicles that work for us to learn the truths of life, so I am trying not to be too arrogant in my comments, but I am just flabbergasted that so many people follow the text and slightest nuance (intended or not) as if it were holy writ.
It really scares me that our culture has become so sanitized and bland, that people are looking to movies like this for meaning. Sure, there is a little there, but it is smashed in with new-age mumbo and eye-candy. You want to learn of life and truth? Read Ghandi, read the words and thoughts of truly great men. Or really take the plunge into profound searchings for the truth and meaning and read Christ, Buddha, or Mohammed.
You want things in movie form? Watch Ghandi, the killing fields, Hotel Rwanda, or Schindler's list, etc.
But it you really want to learn philosophy, the kind that really matters, go seek out those who suffer more than you can possibly imagine, look in their eyes and hear their stories. Keep your heart open and let them touch you. Cry with them. It is amazing how fully life begins to change.
There is so much more out there than what is found in this movie! Put the video games, football games, and beer aside for Just a moment, and try to truly see. It gets addictive, trust me.

Matrix writer-directors Larry and Andy Wachowski commissioned seven artists from Japan, America and Korea to make nine short films set in the world of their feature trilogy. Some of the top anime directors contributed to this anthology, including Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll), Koji Morimoto (Robot Carnival), and Shinchiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop). Some of the films tie directly into the narrative of the live-action movies. Drawn in a style reminiscent of Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Mahiro Maeda's The Second Renaissance (Part I & Part II) depicts the human-machine wars that caused the enslavement of humanity and the creation of the Matrix. The duel between two flamboyantly costumed Kabuki warriors in Kawajiri's Program is an expanded version of the cybernetic training Neo (Keanu Reeves) undergoes in the first Matrix film. Watanabe evokes the look of old newspaper photographs in A Detective Story, which falls outside the storyline of the features. Fast-paced, violent and grim, The Animatrix is an uneven but intriguing compilation that represents a new level in the ongoing cross-pollination between Japanese animation and American live action. (Not rated, suitable for ages 16 and older: considerable violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews:
Great Backstory!.......2007-03-30
I might not like all of the animation from every story, but every story is truly amazing. It gives the back story to the movies and proves that we are to blame for everything. I'd say that most stories will have you glued to the screen, and even in tears. The final story is about humans capturing a robot and playing with it to make it friendly, and at the end, it tries to save one of the women's life. It is a sad story, overall, this is a thing that is worth getting if you are a fan.
Animatrix is outstanding.......2007-01-25
Aside from the great animation, the stories have meaning and strangely speaks of string theory at its most interesting level. For those who find theMatrix movie meaningful, Animatrix fills in the gaps.
A lot better than it's live action counterpart.......2007-01-02
-The shorts start with "Final Flight of the Osiris" which lets us know where the scans that we hear about from "Reloaded" came from. After it's over we move into what I think should have been in the movie which is the "The Second Renaissance". It lets us know the whole history of how the war between man and machine began, who struck first, and why the machines are so hostile to us. I would have loved to see a live action version of that for the movie but the version we see hear is also very nice. The other stories "Kid's Story", "Beyond", "A Detective's Story", "Matriculated", "Program", and "World Record" tell different stories that range from a kid that commits suicide only to wake up in the real world to a wheel chaired bound athlete that almost breaks out of the Matrix due to his will to push himself. Out of the nine stories I'd say I loved about 8 of them, the only one I can't stand and never watch is the weird one with the program that is trapped inside the matrix or something like that. It's just one big mess of a story and never really holds any interest.
-If I had to pick 3 stories out of the 9 to live on an Island with I'd go with "A Detective's Story", "Beyond", and "The Second Renaissance Part 2". All three have their own unique visual style and all have no connection to each other that I know of. I love "A Detective's Story" because it lets you know how desperate the machines are to capture Trinity and also lets you see Trinity in a completely different light. The Detective in the story is a very likable man who doesn't realize that he's being used by the machines till it's too late. It's a very nice story with a sad ending and one of the best in my opinion, "The Second Renaissance Part 2" is great because that's when you really get to see why the sky in the real world so messed up and also get the answer to the question that Morpheus asked in the first movie which is whether it was us or the machines that struck first. It's told in this mystical way computer way that feels like you're watching a documented history than a fiction animated story and it also helps explain some lines from the 3rd Matrix from the architect especially the line "What do you think I am, human?"
-My favorite story is "Beyond" which a very, very simple story of a girl looking for her cat that discovers a building that no gravity which some kids take full advantage of. I just love how mystical and dreamlike it is, the weird Hisashi like music also helps in creating that mystical aura. The trick to Neo's power is not that he's super human but that he can manipulate the codes in the Matrix and make it into anything he wants. If he wants to fly then he'll remove the codes for gravity and start flying or if he wants to stop bullets he'll just remove the codes that propel it and they stop. That concept is further explored in this story. It's a really great piece of writing because there's not a whole lot that goes on there but just rather you watch kids have fun in the with broken codes for gravity.
-One thing this does a lot better than the movies ever did was to show you the size and scope of the Matrix itself. In the movie you're confined to one city and that's it but in this we pretty much go all around to see what a vast and detailed program that the Matrix is. A couple of the stories should have definitely being in the movie too. "Second Renaissance" and "Flight of the Osiris" should have being in the movie instead of us watching Neo get into one long pointless fight scene after the other. I can understand why because of length they might have cut it but they could have at least given us a truncated version of it.
-I know "The Matrix" movies are suppose to be over but where the movies end that's where stuff like this can go on so I'm hoping that we get more short stories that are as engaging as the ones featured in this pack.
The Animatrix.......2006-10-29
Over all great movie(s), however, in my opinion the live action movies are better.
In some ways better than the three films.......2006-09-20
I like the Animatrix very much. It is a wonderful walk through the world of the Matrix and it provides us with a history of the world leading up to the creation of the matrix. Some of the stories work well and some work less well, but the diversity of the visions is engaging. All the visions are quite short.
In many respects, the Animatrix is better than the films, which seemed to get shallower and shallower as the story went on. The Matrix writers should have had a closer look at the works of William Gibson and other science fiction writers who have been dealing with VR worlds and realities for some years and doing it in a far more sophisticated way.
Some of the animations in the Animatrix would have been even better if they were "fleshed out" into longer films, some are just right and a couple, like "World Record" could have been dropped completely with no real loss.
I return to the Animatrix DVD often. The DVDs of the films, a lot less often.

The ultimate sc-fi adventure for adults in one box set!.......2007-07-04
I'm like the 187th person to review this, but all that can be said incase your completely oblivious to classic movies....THIS IS THE BEST BOX SET THERE IS!!!
