Jennifer Garner's lips grow more Angelina-esque every year. In the romantic comedy Catch and Release, Garner (Alias, 13 Going On 30) plays Gray Wheeler, a young woman whose fiance dies unexpectedly before the wedding, leaving Gray unable to afford her home--so she moves in with her fiance's best friends, Sam (Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Dogma) and Dennis (Sam Jaeger, Lucky Number Slevin). But the presence of another old friend named Fritz (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood) leads to the unveiling of a secret: Gray's fiance had a child with another woman. Catch and Release lacks the clear story structure that most romantic comedies are built on, but trades it for a richer sense of the ambiguities of human relationships. Garner, though lovely and personable, is a bit bland--fortunately, she's surrounded by actors with all kinds of edges, including Smith (who shows an unexpected and uncloying earnest side), Fiona Shaw (from the Harry Potter movies) as the fiance's grieving mother, and Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), who demonstrates once again her powers as a fearless and surprising actress. Catch and Release is an uneven movie, with a remarkably elegant visual style that sometimes clashes with the workmanlike dialogue, but it can't be written off as the same old Hollywood claptrap. Though a happy ending is inevitable, the path it takes has some surprising turns and flashes of unexpected emotional depth.-- Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2007-07-04

One of the least engaging movies I've ever endured. It's hard to know how to criticize it when I can't see anything it was attempting. The biggest problems are how little of a sense you get of who the characters are to each other and the cryptic way the plot unfolds without containing any interesting mysteries. As a Kevin Smith fan I don't understand why he thought this movie was worth his time. Even his part didn't make me laugh. I'd give four stars to his commentary track that goes a fair way to redeeming the overall product though.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming........2007-07-04

I really enjoyed this movie. I am a Jennifer Garner fan and she plays a great role in this movie. Timothy Olyphant, Sam Jaeger and Kevin Smith are very convincing in their roles as grieving friends even though they share a very odd sort of kinship.

The movie shows the different ways these individuals grief for their deceased friend and how they emerge on the sunnier side of life at the end of the film via different paths.

There are some very funny moments in the film but mostly it leaves you with a very warm fuzzy feeling....even the hubby enjoyed it !

2 out of 5 stars "Catch & Release?" I say just let go!.......2007-07-01

Boy, am I bored. I can't think of anyone who I'd like to recommend watching this, except for some uptight teenage girls. I just finished watching it. The main plot isn't all that bad. It could have had its niche. But the director managed to make a slow-moving,lifeless piece of work which I think most viewers would find it hard to sit to the end. The only thing that got me to watch this in the beginning, like some other viewers,is Kevin Smith. I love to have a chance to see how he acts in other people's movies. But I can only say even with that, the movie is boring like hell.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad sorry to say.......2007-06-28

I watched this movie because I'm a Timothy Olyphant fan. My husband and I loved his work in DEADWOOD. And we enjoyed the tv series ALIAS with Garner. However, this film took a long time to get going and then went nowhere and fell flat with a little thud. There was some chemistry with Olyphant and Garner, but it wasn't well-demonstrated. I don't mean to be cruel, but Garner played just about the worst drunk I've ever seen in a movie. That's not her strongpoint. Her wardrobe was hideous. But just getting back to the movie it was not something we'd recommend. We recommended HOLIDAY recently with Cameron Diaz & Kate Winslet - that was adorable. But a couple high points of "CATCH" were Grady's mother coming round at the end and Kevin's character getting together with Juliette Lewis (she WAS great!). As a romantic comedy it was horrible. As a romance it was very so-so. As a drama it was light. I wanted to see something exciting happen with everyone, some windfall of money Grady'd left to all of them, or some sizzling emotional scenes with Olyphant & Garner. Garner does deserve credit for portraying a miss-perfect waspy princess very well. I felt much of the plot was unrealistic. A woman like Gray would never jump into bed with Fritz so fast.

1 out of 5 stars Catch & Release.......2007-06-27

This movie was terrible, It did not hold my interest, there seemed to be no plot to it.. I was bored and wish I had never bought it. A total waste of my money.

Paul Newman shines as cocky poolroom hustler "Fast" Eddie Felson in Robert Rossen's atmospheric adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel. Newman's Felson is a swaggering pool shark punk who takes on the king of the poolroom, Minnesota Fats (a cool, assured Jackie Gleason in his most understated performance). After losing big and crashing into a void of self-pity, Eddie meets down-and-out Sarah (Piper Laurie in a delicate performance), an alcoholic blue blood who's dropped into Eddie's world of dingy bars and seedy poolrooms. Eddie regains his confidence and attracts the attention of a shifty, calculating promoter, Bert Gordon (George C. Scott at his most heartless), who offers to bring Eddie into the big money--but at what cost? Rossen brings his film to life with the easy pace of a pool game, giving his actors room to explore their characters and develop into a razor-sharp ensemble. Eugen Schüfftan earned an Academy Award for his shadowing black-and-white cinematography, as did art directors Harry Horner and Gene Callahan for their deceivingly simple set designs. Even in the daylight this film seems to be smothered by night, lit by the dim glow of a bar lamp or the overhead glare of a pool-table light, an appropriate environment for this tale of one man's struggle with his soul and his self-esteem. Newman returned as an older, wiser, cagier Felson 25 years later in Martin Scorsese's Color of Money. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Paul Newman heads a superb cast featuring Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott and Piper Laurie in the riveting film that received an Academy Award(r) nomination as Best Picture of 1961 and brought all four of its Oscar(r) nomination. Newman (Best Actor nominee) is electrifying as Fast Eddie Felson, an arrogant, amoral hustler who haunts backstreet pool rooms fleecing anyone who'll pick up a cue. Determined to be acclaimed as the best, Eddie seeks out the legendary Minnesota Fats (Gleason, Supporting Actor nominee), who's backed by Bert Gordon (Scott, Supporting Actor nominee), a predatory gambler. Eddie can beat the champ, but virtually defeats himself with his low self-image. The love of a lonely woman (Laurie, Best Actress nominee) could turn Eddie's life around, but he won't rest until he beats Minnesota Fats, no matter what price he must pay. Voted one of the year's ten best by "The New York Times" and "Time," and distinguished by 2 Academy Awards- Cinematography, Art Direction-Set Decoration (B&W), The Hustler is a dazzling cinematic triumph.

5 out of 5 stars The Hustler.......2007-06-28

A gritty, atmospheric picture about the tense world of high-stakes pool, Rossen's "The Hustler" features some of Newman's best work-to-date. "Fast Eddie" may be a young virtuoso with a pool cue, but his maturity hasn't caught up with his moves, and he learns some hard lessons in pool and life from Minnesota Fats, played to cool perfection by the late, great Gleason. Scott also stands out as a ruthless backer, and Piper Laurie does a sad, sensitive turn as a lonely woman on the fringes who falls under Eddie's spell. Though Newman was Oscar-nominated, he'd have to reprise the role twenty-five years later (in "The Color Of Money") to win the statuette. I prefer this, his original outing.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Eddie Delivers..........2007-06-14

The Hustler is a crucial film in Paul Newman's career. It launched him into the Hollywood stratosphere and marked the beginning of an incredible run in the 1960s, with movies like Hud, Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Newman became a movie star but acted like a character actor, creating one memorable character after another. Arguably, The Hustler is where he really came into his own, delivering a powerful performance as small-time pool hustler Fast Eddie Felson.

The first disc includes an audio commentary by actor Paul Newman, daughter of director Robert Rossen, Carol Rossen, editor Dede Allen, actor Stefan Gierasch (who played Preacher), assistant director Ulu Grosbard, film critic Richard Schickel, and writer/producer Jeff Young. Allen says that they shot and edited the film in New York City which the studio did not like because they wanted to keep closer tabs on the production. Rossen says that before her father optioned the book, Frank Sinatra wanted to adapt it but couldn't figure out a way to do it. Gierasch and Newman talk about how they were cast and recall filming anecdotes. Each participant is interviewed separately and then edited together in this decent track.

"Trick Shot Analysis" allows you to watch the film with pool expert Mike Massey analyzing five pool sequences or on their own. He tends to describe what we're watching but does explain some of the tactics on display in the movie.

New to this edition are three retrospective featurettes. "Life in the Fast Lane: Fast Eddie Felson and the Search for Greatness" includes new interviews with Newman, Laurie, Dede Allen and others. Newman speaks passionately about the film and tells an amusing story about researching his role.

"Milestones in Cinema History: The Hustler" examines the film's legacy. Newman admired Rossen for allowing them to experiment in the moment. He also recounts a story about how he got hustled by Gleason.

"Swimming with Sharks: The Art of the Hustle" explores the gambling aspect as well as the con aspect of the film. A pool champ demonstrates some impressive trick shots and defines some key lingo of the sport.

Carried over from the previous DVD edition is "The Hustler: The Inside Story," a retrospective featurette that provides a historical context and how Rossen wanted to comment on society with this film. It also explores the film's origins, casting and various aspects.

"Paul Newman: Hollywood's Cool Hand" is an A&E biography episode on the actor that examines his life and career with many of his contemporaries talking about him.

"How to Make a Shot" repeats the "Trick Shot Analysis" extra on the first disc.

Also included are trailers for eight of Newman's films and two trailers for The Hustler.

Finally, there is a "Still Gallery" with a collection of behind-the-scene photographs, promotional stills and ad campaign material.

Seriously, do you think they could have chosen a different title font?

4 out of 5 stars 'The Hustler': Dark, hip, classic.......2007-06-11

Paul Newman has been around so long and is so extended as a personality -- we see him most frequently on salad dressing labels -- that there's a danger of forgetting his genius.

Anyone in need of a refresher should cue up for Fox's double-disc rerelease of "The Hustler." This was Newman's breakthrough film, a startling piece of lowlife lit built around the fictional pool-shooting punk Fast Eddy Felson. George C. Scott, Jackie Gleason and Piper Laurie turned this 1961 drama into an actors showcase. Every other line found its way into the nation's pool halls and stayed there for decades.

Robert Rossen directed with style, daring and street smarts, in striking black and white.

This DVD appears to have the same video and audio as the last Fox release, in 2002. No big deal -- there is almost no apparent wear and the widescreen images look handsome overall, a little pale here or murky there. The DVD also ports over the extras from '02, including a group commentary in which Newman participates.

New to the set are three featurettes about the movie, actors and pool shots. Newman is interviewed on camera, sharp but hunched over and hoarsely whispering a lot. The heavy lifting is done by Piper Laurie, who has excellent recall of the New York production. (Newman and Laurie both were in their mid-30s. Rossen called them "kids.")

Fox deserves credit for upgrading the title at a fair price, but owners of the previous disc probably should wait for rerack on the A/V. There is a fair amount of repetition in the shotgun marriage of old and new extras.

5 out of 5 stars Do The Hustle: Newman Makes Fast Eddie Felson A Hollywood Legend.......2007-04-06

Let's face it, what can I possibly say about Robert Rossen's exquisitely hard-edged classic that hasn't been said before? "The Hustler" is an astounding and uncompromising drama that seems as fresh today as it did 45 years ago. So often we'll look back at the classics--and, as is appropriate, they might seem dated. Times change and that is reflected in cinema. "The Hustler," though, is one of the rare films that was so sophisticated, so intelligent, and so honestly raw--that its power has not been diminished by the years. Set in a very unglamorous world of pool halls and back rooms, "The Hustler" is a testosterone fueled excursion into the life and pursuits of one of Hollywood's most notorious anti-heroes--Fast Eddie Felson. Nominated for eight Oscars, this refreshingly adult film cemented Paul Newman's status as one of our greatest actors.

The story of "The Hustler" is surprisingly simplistic. A brash young pool shark sets his sights on defeating one of the game's greatest players--Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason, at his best). But getting up on Fats isn't enough--no, he wants to crush his opponent. Eddie's naked and uncompromising drive eventually becomes his undoing as his winning streak turns to defeat. Despondent and broke, Eddie aligns with an equally desperate love interest. Sarah, played by Piper Laurie (never better), is a bitter alcoholic who has given up on life. But her complicated romance with Eddie seems to hint at the possibility of new hope. Eddie, however, can't change his spots overnight and an encounter with an unscrupulous manager (George C. Scott) just might get Eddie a second chance at Fats. For good or for bad, it seems Eddie is destined to go down that road again.

Paul Newman imbues Eddie with much cockiness, bravado, arrogance, ambition, and even desperation. In my opinion, it is Newman's best and most multi-layered performance. This (along with "Hud") celebrated Newman as a new type of leading man--someone you could like and despise at once. Morally questionable, perhaps even amoral at times, Newman was not afraid to be despicable. While only Oscar nominated for this film, ironically he won roughly 25 years later for reprising Eddie for "The Color of Money." Laurie, Scott, and Gleason all picked up Oscar nods as well. The film is impeccably acted and beautifully filmed. Not just for those with an interest in pool, "The Hustler" is a searing drama that stands as a deft character study of a man figuring out what is important after all.

While the Collector's Edition seems to be handsomely packaged as a two disc set, whether or not it's worth the upgrade from the Special Edition seems a bit suspect. Both have widescreen presentation, commentary from Newman and "Time" film critic Richard Schickel (among others), and features on "How to Make The Shot" and "The Hustler: The Inside Story." This new addition adds four featurettes--"Life in the Fast Lane: Fast Eddie Felson and The Search for Greatness," "Milestones in Cinema History: The Making of The Hustler," "Swimming with Sharks: The Art of the Hustle," and "Paul Newman: Hollywood's Cool Hand." So it's a judgment call whether or not you feel these extra shorts will add to your viewing experience. If you don't own the film, then it's a no-brainer! Either way, "The Hustler" is a true classic. One of Newman's best (if not best) performances make this gritty and timeless drama a must own DVD. KGHarris, 04/07.

It's not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Toula Portokalos is a quiet, devoted daughter in a big, hectic, crazy Greek family. Working at her father's restaurant, "Dancing Zorba's," she hides behind a mop of mousy brown hair and thick, impenetrable glasses, keeping her family close and the world at a distance. But one day at the restaurant, she finds herself pouring coffee for a man so strikingly good-looking, that he inspires her to change her life - and the way she sees the world - forever. With a new hairdo, wardrobe, contact lenses, and most important of all, a whole new attitude, Toula steps out into the world a new woman, all ready to meet her man. Ian Miller is tall, handsome, but definitely not Greek. And whether he can handle Toula, her parents, her aunts, uncles, cousins and several centuries of Greek culture remains to be seen. But when you see the world through Toula's eyes, anything is possible!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE it!.......2007-07-03

This is one of my favorites! I could watch it over and over. I really love Johan Corbett!

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of my family!.......2007-06-21

The first time I watched this movie, I remember thinking "They remind me of MY family!". Whether you're Greek or not, you'll be sure to love this movie.

So what's this movie about? This movie revolves around the life of Toula, a Greek who is sick of his father's Greek stories and having to work in her family's Greek restaurant. When Ian makes a stop at her restaurant, Toula begins to fall for him although he doesn't quite notice her. After going back to school and getting a better job (and a much needed makeover), Ian and Toula meet again and this time, the feeling is mutual. The two fall in love and become engaged. The problem? Ian is not Greek. The rest of the movie has Toula's family trying to understand Ian and his lifestyle and ultimately making it to the couple's wedding.

So what's to like about this movie? As I said above, Toula's family reminds me so much of my family. Some of the Greek stereotypes pertain to my Portuguese family as well which makes this movie that much sweeter. Second, it's incredibly funny. From Toula's father's use of Windex to fix everything, to the entire male part of the family being named Nick, you'll be sure to find a lot of humor in this movie. Third, the storyline is sort of different. Obviously there are movies out there about engaged couples that just don't get along with their parents-in-law but this movie shows an entire family that just doesn't understand Ian.

And what's not to like? Not much. Although it's rated PG, I wouldn't let younger kids watch this movie. Besides that very minor thing, this movie is great!

When it comes to movies that you MUST watch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for Greeks.......2007-06-16

I didn't see this film when it was in the theaters, in spite of rave reviews. It seemed to be a pretty obvious story which didn't interest me.
Recently I picked it up at the library (for free) and, to my surprise, I found it genuinely heartwarming and entertaining.

As others have mentioned, it is sort of a re-hash of Moonstruck, and it isn't as well done. And yes be prepared for a lot of ethnic stereotypes--the loud Greeks with the garish taste as well as the uptight WASPS. And yes, we know from the opening scene what's going to happen. I think that the reason the movie overcomes these flaws is the overwhelming love in it. You can tell that it's a real story and that's what lifts it up from cliche to something genuinely touching.

The script is smart and funny. It moves fast. And the cast is first rate. To some, the idea that the very homely 30-ish girl in the restaurant would stand a chance with the superbly hunky Ian Miller (played by the irrestable John Corbett) seems impossible. But the actress is so funny, so real, and so smart, that she really does have enormous appeal.

I am always happy to see the wonderful Laine Kazan, who makes every scene a heartwarmer. The fellow who played the dad is perfect, too, as are all of the others. I particulary loved the gramma!

I recently saw Monsoon Wedding, which was also lauded and can be compared in many ways to this film. But Monsoon Wedding nowhere touched the genuineness of this work.

It's not the most artfully impressive film ever made, but, like the big fat family (including the newcomer,) it has plenty of heart...and that's worth a lot!

5 out of 5 stars Jackie W. .......2007-06-11

This is really one great movie! I've seen it before but enjoy watching it again every year or so. John Corbett is so "dreamy"! The TV sit-com would have been a big hit if Corbett was in the cast. All the family antics makes this movie a success. Everyone must see this movie at least once.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious comedy!.......2007-05-25

Oh, my gosh, this romantic comedy was absolutely fall-on-the-floor hilarious! If you are from a family with a strong ethnic background (like I am), you will find this movie hysterically funny. The at-the-time-unknown Nia Vardalos is charming as the heroine, and John Corbett is perfectly cast as her love interest. But it's the huge (and hugely funny) supporting cast that really makes this movie. Strong casting and a well-written and well-executed script make for a great movie. Don't miss this one!!

The Road Warrior is already a classic, sans condescending genre distinctions like "sci-fi" or "action." But the story of Mel Gibson's stately antihero begins in Mad Max, George Miller's low-budget debut in which Max is a "Bronze" (cop) in an unspecified postapocalyptic future with a buddy-partner and family. But unlike most films set in the devastated future, Mad Max is especially notable because it is poised between our industrialized world and total regression to medieval conditions. The scale tips towards disintegration when the Glory Riders burn into town on their bikes like an overamped cadre of Brando's Wild Ones. Representing the active chaos that will eventually overwhelm the dying vestiges of civil society, they take everything dear to Max, who will exact due revenge. His flight into the same wilds that created the villains artfully sets up the morally ambiguous character of the subsequent films. --Alan E. Rapp

Description

Setting Mel Gibson on a sure path to superstardom, this highly acclaimed "crazy collide-o-scope"(Newsweek) of highway mayhem "cinematically defined the postapocalyptic landscape" (TV Guide). Featuring eye-popping stunts that are "electrifying and very convincing" (Variety) and "an authentically nihilistic spirit" (The Village Voice), Mad Max is "pure cinematic poetry" (Time). In the ravaged near future, a savage motorcycle gang rules the road. Terrorizing innocent civilians while tearing up the streets, the ruthless gang laughs in the face ofa police force hell-bent on stopping them. But they underestimate one officer: Max Rockatansky (Gibson). And when the bikers brutalize Max's best friend and family, they send him into a mad frenzy that leaves him with only one thing left in the world to live forrevenge!

5 out of 5 stars Mad Max.......2007-07-04

George Miller's first entry in the three part series helped boost Gibson to stardom, and showed Hollywood a thing or two about making an explosive action flick on a shoestring budget. The bleak, desolate near-future is intriguingly rendered: the world looks like a junk shop in a desert. The baddies are a dirty, gruesome lot, which only gets the audience more revved when Max goes after them in earnest. Gibson has "star" written all over him. Hyperkinetic stunts punctuate this raw, rugged actioner.

3 out of 5 stars More a first draft than a real classic.......2007-02-25

It's not altogether surprising that Mad Max got such short shrift when it came out Stateside with an unfortunate dubbing job to eliminate the `Strine accents so American International could pretend it was an American film (Mel Gibson suffered perhaps a worse indignity with his screen credit moved to last position, just before the lab credit on the trailers). Much of what people remember and love about Max is delivered in the sequel rather than this first outing. Indeed, at times it feels more like a blueprint than a proper movie and Gibson barely registers in the surprisingly little screen time he has - the villains, who all seem to be doing either premature Danny Huston impersonations or somewhat more timely German New Romantic turns make much more of an impression. Not only do huge sections of the film keep him offscreen, but he makes little impact in his underwritten role when he is on. In many ways, this is just a first low-budget draft of Max's world - civilization hasn't entirely crumbled yet and the precious juice is still flowing even if parts are getting hard to find. Still, the car stunts are good, if somewhat thin on the ground, but this is one case where the sequels are definitely better.

MGM/UA's special edition offers reasonable extras, but they are limited by the non-involvement of George Miller and Mel Gibson and the unavailability of any archive footage. The making of featurette and audio commentary from crew members are the best of the bunch while the Gibson featurette tends to be too much of a puff piece. Despite being listed as the Australian trailer, the theatrical trailer and the accompanying TV spots are all from the US release. Thankfully the original Australian soundtrack to the feature is included on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars All time favourite.......2007-02-16

I remember sneaking into the Forum Theatre in Melbourne as a kid to see this gem (R rated). It is still as good today on the big plasma as back then. The boys come over and watch it every AFL Grand Final day. Glad to see they released this in the States with the original soundtrack. You will be amused to know we in Australia specially purchased your old version to see how it was dubbed. Pretty funny stuff seeing as Mel has a bit of an American accent in the film anyway. Love how it is all shot around where we live in Melbourne. If you liked this, check out Odd Angry Shot, another film not to be missed

20 wasted dollars! I obviously missed that the dvd was in american format. Luckily my son living in USA was home, so I could watch it on his apple-computer. It was also in no way possible to copy and open the film for european standard.
Please make clear in the presentation of films if they only could be played in american format.

The 18th James Bond adventure was a runaway box-office success when released in 1995, thanks to the arrival of Pierce Brosnan as the fifth actor (following the departure of Timothy Dalton) to play the suave, danger-loving Agent 007. This James Bond is a bit more vulnerable and psychologically complex--and just a shade more politically correct--but he's still a formally attired playboy at heart, with a lovely Russian beauty (Izabella Scorupco) as his sexy ally against a cadre of renegade Russians bent on--what else?--global domination. There's also a seductive villainous with the suggestive name of Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), and the great actress Judi Dench makes her first appearance as Bond's superior, M, who wisecracks about 007's "dinosaur" status as a globetrotting sexist. All in all, this action-packed Bond adventure provided a much-needed boost the long-running movie series, revitalizing the 007 franchise for the turn of the millennium. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great, GREAT, Film.......2007-06-24

007, Goldeneye is magic in so many ways. First of all, the name is one of the best and most memorable in the series, making it entirely marketable in diverse ways. Second, the acting is stellar, incorporating many recognizable stars into one amazing Bond film. Thirdly, the electronic/lush romantic score by Eric Serra is wonderful. Fourth... Let's just say this is a great film.
PS
My only reservation in reccomending this film are a couple scenes that seem to blur the line between sensuality and violence, (the villianess is a murderer with the style of a black widow.)

3 out of 5 stars I can only give it a 3 of 5.......2007-06-14

2 out of 5 stars Brosnan's best Bond but that isn't saying very much.......2007-02-24

Pierce Brosnan, who did a spectacular job with "The Thomas Crown Affair", makes a surprisingly weak James Bond. He's almost a perfect splicing together of one of the better Bonds, Timothy Dalton, and the all-time worst, Roger Moore. That's too bad because Brosnan is a fairly good actor. If the producers had tried to portray Bond as Dalton and Fleming did, I think he would have done a fairly good job of it. Once again, "The Thomas Crown Affair" demonstrates how good Brosnan can play cool, ruthless and debonair.

The movie itself isn't very good and doesn't really reference Fleming except in the title. They took one plot element from "Moonraker" and that's about all of the Fleming you'll find in "Goldeneye". That's too bad because a lot of Ian Fleming's ideas have never made it to the big screen.

The first four Bonds and OHMSS are fairly faithful to Fleming and that's about it. "Live and Let Die", "Living Daylights" and "For Your Eyes Only" also feature a few of Fleming's ideas but not enough to make them worthwhile.

The new "Casino Royale" had quite a bit of Fleming in it, particularly in the center section of the film. That's a good thing. Remakes of "Live and Let Die", "Moonraker", and "Diamonds Are Forever" would be welcome, particularly if the screenwriters use the Fleming novels as actual launching points, as they did with "Casino Royale".

5 out of 5 stars Brosnan's debut is his best Bond film.......2007-01-25

In "Goldeneye", James Bond, played for the first time by Pierce Brosnan, must prevent an ex-MI6 agent, Alec Trevelyan, from detonating a powerful electromatic pulse, via satellite, over London. The pulse would render all electronics in London totally useless, and Trevelyan would seize that opportunity to electronically rob the Bank Of London. Along the way, Bond is assisted by computer programmer Natalya Simonova, who has extensive knowledge of the goldeneye satellite. Bond's other enemies throughout the movie include Trevelyan's sidekick, Russian General Ouromov (who has betrayed his government); Boris, a computer programmer who was once a comrade of Natalya, but betrayed her; and Zenia Onatopp, a dark, sexually charged woman who takes pleasure in making love, and killing. She especially enjoys killing WHILE making love ;)

The feel of "Goldeneye" is rather dark and serious, although there are comical moments strewn throughout the movie (so it's not quite as stiff as either of Dalton's Bond movies). There are a wide array of characters featured in the movie, all of whom are thoroughly enjoyable, and well written. The actors playing them are especially entertaining to watch. Kudos to Izabella Scorupco, who is not only gorgeous, but plays the part of Natalya very memorably. Famke Janssen is also magnificent as Onatopp, and there has not been any Bond villian quite as quirky or devilish as Onatopp since (what Bond villainess has ever licked Bond's face, and then beaten him up? Just Onatopp!). Pierce Brosnan, of course, fits right in as James Bond, and manages to combine elements of a dark edge with a touch of a light side.

"Goldeneye" works very well as a Bond movie. The plot is intruiging, and moves along at a perfect pace, keeping the viewer interested. The action sequences in the movie are very well done, immensely enjoyable to watch. Eric Serra's music fits the movie PERFECTLY, and in my opinion, the producers should have invited him back for more films. His score adds a dark undertone to the movie, something which all of Brosnan's Bond movies afterwards would painfully lack.

Characterization is also important in the movie. One of the most memorable scenes has Bond sitting on a Caribbean beach at sunset, staring out at the ocean, and thinking about his inevitable confrontation with Trevelyan, who used to be an old friend. Natalya walks over to Bond, and questions how he can be so cold, so dark. "It's what keeps me alive," Bond replies, before the two of them go off to make love. It's a shame Brosnan was not given more scenes such as this one in future Bond films... it certainly makes "Goldeneye" unique, and deep.

When Mary Rodgers, daughter of the composer Richard Rodgers, was reported as saying she never wanted to see another Oklahoma!, it was her way of paying the highest tribute to Trevor Nunn's production at the Royal National Theatre which was subsequently taken into the studio and filmed. The camera follows the playgoers into the auditorium of the Olivier where in their company we watch the show and applaud the numbers as the real thing. Nunn treats Rodgers and Hammerstein's first collaboration with the utmost seriousness, restoring the full text so that it comes across as a drama indebted to Eugene O'Neill. Although Oklahoma! unfolds at a leisurely pace, it is extraordinary how one is drawn into the drama under Nunn's direction.

There's seldom a wish for true locations as the pace picks up and we move into the claustrophobic company of Judd Fry in his riveting encounter with the cowboy Curly. The close-up camera work affords an experience the theatre can't bring and also pays handsome dividends in appreciating Susan Stroman's intricate and lively choreography. Her dancers are a fine team, notably Jimmy Johnston who is outstanding as Will Parker leading the Kansas City ensemble. Hugh Jackman (X-Men) as Curly matches him in vocal prowess and looks, and Shuler Hensley sings the tricky role of Judd Fry very well. It's harder to place Peter Polycarpou's Pedlar, a considerably larger role than in the film version, whose accent strays from London's East End to the plains of Europe. Maureen Lipman, rightly deemed the lynchpin of the musical by Nunn, is a joy to watch as Aunt Eller. Laurey (Josefina Gabrielle) and Ado Annie (Vicki Simon) are good but not special. Aside from an abrupt start to Act Two and the occasional voice off microphone, the production sounds good with a larger orchestra present than in the theatre. An Oklahoma! on an epic scale. --Adrian Edwards

5 out of 5 stars The Brits Show Us How OKLAHOMA! Should be Staged.......2007-05-09

OKLAHOMA! opened on Broadway in 1943 and became a classic - not only because the Rodgers and Hammerstein score was so strong, but also because Agnes De Mille was brought in to introduce serious choreography to the Broadway stage. For the past 64 years this musical comedy/drama has been on the boards both professionally and in high schools, colleges and community theaters and always meets with audience acclaim. In 1999 Trevor Nunn reshaped the work, added choreography by Susan Stroman, beefed up the orchestrations, and re-staged the old warhorse in London and the result is an entirely fresh look and appreciation for an 'American classic'.

Nunn opens the inner conflicts of the story and emphasizes some of the more minor characters, a move that adds to the dramatic flow of the work. Yet his biggest asset is the presence of Hugh Jackman as Curly, a handsome stage presence who also happens to possess a strong baritone singing voice and is an agile dancer. From the opening bars of 'Oh, what a beautiful morning' he has us in his back pocket. The remainder of the cast is strong, with special kudos to Maureen Lipman as Aunt Eller, a woman of such plainsman power that she holds the story together with ease. Josefina Gabrielle as Laurey is a fine dancer and has a supple if monochromatic voice and brings a different kind of life to her role. And for once the sinister Jud Fry becomes an understandable villain in the fine work by Shuler Hensley.

For those who don't like audible applause from an audience during a show the technique of making the film appear like a live production will disturb. For this viewer seeing the British audience become involved in the response of this musical made it that much more fun. This is a very fine performance and film of an old American treasure. Grady Harp, May 07

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-04-03

I just watched this on PBS and ran immediately to the computer to order the DVD. I grew up working in local summer stock and community theatre--went on to major in theatre in undergrad before going to grad school for something more consistent with regular work. I worked on or was in a couple of productions of Oklahoma, and have seen several--some great, some not. I have always appreciated the wonderful music and the nearly operatic tone of the show. But before tonight, I had never seen this theatrical classic ACTED. It was spellbinding. Who knew what a great piece of drama this show could be? And for icing on the dramatic cake, the dancing was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers quality, and the vocal performances were the best, in aggregate, I've ever even heard ABOUT. The character of Jud Fry worked in ways I never new it could, due to inspired direction and a tour de force performance. Laurie and Curly actually dancing the dream ballet themselves removed a perenial speed bump in the show. Everything--just EVERYTHING works in this production. For me this is the definitive Oklahoma, and therefore the definitive musical theatre piece. If this wasn't what R and H intended, it should have been. It is a different show than the one I thought I knew. What a production! I can't wait for the DVD to get here so I can watch it again. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars OKLAindreciableHOMA.......2007-03-27

I've been a fan of Rodgers and Hammerstein for years, but Oklahoma was far from my favorite R&H show. The fifties Hollywood version always dissapointed me, I always thought the characters were so cardboard and one dimensional and the story so trite. Then one night I caught the second act of the London Stage Revival during a PBS pledge drive and had to get this. This is the reason I love musicals. This version enchanted me. The story was ACTED and acted so well. The dancing was rousing, robust and masculine. I haven't seen anything to top Seven Brides for Seven Brothers until now. I defy anyone to declare that the dancing in The Farmer and the Cowhand is sissified or to be able to sit still watching it. All the performers are wonderful, but Skyler Hensly is the quintesential Jud and Hugh Jackman is the essential Curly. He may not sing as well as Gordon McCrae but he makes up for it in making Curly a real character. Run and get this version!!!

5 out of 5 stars Americana on the Plains.......2007-03-24

High-energy encapsulation of the American spirit in this tough-tender production. Done lean and hard-scrabble, as opposed to the lush and green Hollywood version. Curley really is as wonderful as he sings he is. Aunt Eller, the matriarch, as done by Maureen Lipman is tough, and loving. Jimmy Johnson, the Welshman, jigs and does rope-tricks. Shuler Hensley's Jud is repulsive, and vulnerable. A classic. For your permanent library.

5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!.......2007-03-10

Saw this on PBS, could not wait to have it for my own. At the time, I didn't know who Hugh Jackman was, now I look for him in other movies.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice........2007-06-16

I don't usually do horror, which is why this is my favorite horror film. I don't care about religion since I don't believe in god, so I don't care about accuracy, you have a good story then I'll like it. I like that Midnight was praying for Constantine and the kid before they went to fight and they laughed at him lol. Why pray like it's gonna help? I like the special effects even though I know they could've been better they're fine. I like ALL they actors they picked out for the movie, and Peter Stormare played an awesome Satan. Some lines were a bit cheesy but the rest of the movie made up for it. I also like the fact that there was no love or kiss scenes, they pulled that off nicely, Keanu and Rachel's chemistry was awesome, and I liked the "almost" kiss scenes where Constantine was putting a necklace on Angela's neck like an almost kiss. Well done, one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Constantine a Good HD DVD but not great........2007-06-15

Basically all the previous 4 or 5 reviews are correct about the film. So lets talk about the picture, its in a word, great. The story is like action-Exorsist. I think most people will like it. Constantine is dark and its based off a dark comic. Its full of extras and includes an alternate ending so you will NOT feel bad about your purchase. If you are looking for something different to try on HD DVD, then pick up this and a copy of Serenity on HD DVD. This movie is a great way to round out you HD DVD collection.

3 out of 5 stars Blazing hell.......2007-06-09

Constantine is a film that needed one more re-write from someone like David Mamet. Not to say that the dialogue is bad (it isn't) or that the characters aren't interesting (they are, even if they need a bit more fleshing out). No, Constantine's greatest problem is a murky story that fails to resonate or present itself clearly. In addition to a completely useless "text over a black screen" prologue that mentions a Spear of Destiny but only serves to confuse the viewer on their first sitting, the film features a series of events that don't really seem connected (and the film does a poor job of trying to explain to us that they are). The result is that the story, while not original, isn't bad; it's simply not cohesive.

Still, what's amazing about Constantine is that the flaws mentioned above really are the worst things about the film. Francis Lawrence, who had previously only directed music videos, debuts stunningly here. The film is completely devoid of the excessive flash, glitz, and hyperspeed editing that usually comes with directors who teethed with music videos. Instead, it is very deliberately paced (almost slow, even), with longer, wide angle shots, and while it borrows heavily from The Wachowski Brothers' original Matrix film and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, I can think of a lot of worse places to seek influence. The set design and cinematography are excellent, and coupled with Lawrence's deliberate pacing and stellar eye, give the film a gritty yet eye-popping look that really sells the surrealistic story The film's visions of heaven and hell are striking and startling, and the visual effects blend seamlessly with the film at all times. Brian Tyler and Klau Badelt's score is suitably atmospheric and creepy.

The cast is very good, and though none of the performances are really anything to write home about, with the possible exception of Rachel Weisz as Angela and Peter Stormare, camping it up as Lucifer. Still, while some might argue that the performances almost seem "phoned in," that restrained, minimalistic style ironically fits the film better.

I've heard complaints that the film is watered down in comparison to its graphic novel origins, though I can't really comment as I'm not familiar with the Hellblazer series. Still, Constantine is visually stunning, atmospheric, remarkably well directed, and even if the writing stumbles more than it should, it provides enough food for thought and fleeting moments of really great stuff that it's definitely worth a viewing. Constantine is neither an action nor a horror movie, but instead a nice stylistic hybrid very much in the vein of Blade Runner and The Matrix that acquits itself exceedingly well despite its flaws. Maybe with another re-write or two from a more experience screenwriter it could have been great, but as it is, Constantine is pretty cool, and more importantly, pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Touchy-Feely Demon Movie.......2007-05-20

If you're going to watch this movie, you've really got to watch it in HD! This "Constantine" HD DVD exhibits some of the most outstanding visual sequences you'll find in a demon movie, or otherwise - way cool stuff! The transfer is very clean and top-notch.

The Dolby TrueHD soundtrack is a great feature to enhance this otherwise thematic audio track: the dialog is as if spoken in the public library, and all of the demon encounters are as if you're smack in the middle of the action. That's just the style though, but this "quiet dialog" style is the sort of thing which makes me want to get it over with or go to sleep - one of the two...overall the movie does sound great.

The whole demon movie genre doesn't do much for me...never really did. The chanting, the touching, and the controversial symbols that bring out the people who like to make a big to-do about anything controversial - it's all too much for me. These are typical features which lend themselves to predictability, but if these elements aren't there, then it isn't a demon movie anymore - a catch 22. Does this mean that once you've seen this kind of movie you've seen 'em all? I think it does [for me].

The good news here is that "Constantine" is very modern, it's extremely huge in production value, and it has some awesome visual appeal that's fresh enough to make this movie quite an entertaining film.

There's tons of features form behind the story, to additional footage (deleted scenes), a music video, two feature commentaries by two groups of two of four different people, teaser and theatrical trailers, and an IME with Director Francis Lawrence.

I recommend "Constantine" (mostly for the special effects).

4 out of 5 stars VERY HAPPY!!! A MUST SEE!!!.......2007-05-17

Overall, this is a good movie. The story is very good, and very tongue and cheek with views and belief. As for the HD version, GREAT, and has tons of Supplements/Extra/Features, it was definitely worth with the "IN-Depth" that comes with the movie! I'm happy to say that "IF" you like this movie, then buy the HD version of it, I wasn't a fan of this Movie, but I bought it because i knew the HD would be awesome, and it didn't disappoint me, and then for some reason, I was watching the movie, and I was like, "Wow, this is a pretty good movie." Again, Mr. Reeves, isn't the best actor, BUT he did OK, enough to not ruin the movie. This is a great movie! I would recommend atleast checking it out! :) Awesome picture!

George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) directed this adaptation of James Michener's novel about the history of the 50th state. Max von Sydow plays a zealous missionary with a Calvinist bent, intent on enlightening the natives even as his wife (Julie Andrews) is romanced by the dashing Richard Harris. The film is both a glossy vision of Hawaii in the early 19th century and a sometimes-brutal drama full of death, a rough childbirth, stormy weather, etc. Hill's blunt editing, meant to emphasize the more terrifying aspects of the natural order of life, makes the film look particularly dated and mannered today. This is best appreciated for its cast, all of whom were making inroads in Hollywood at the time. --Tom Keogh

Description

Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and nominated* for seven OscarsÂ(r), this "majestic, gorgeously framedepic is adventuresome picture-making, a credit to the industry" (The Film Daily) and riveting entertainment! They came to bring God, but instead brought disease and destruction. The Rev. Abner Hale (Von Sydow) and his gentle wife Jerusha (Andrews) attempt to convert early 19th-century Hawaiian natives to Christianity but find themselves ill-equipped to endure the unexpected tribulations of paradise. 5 out of 5 stars How to get "Hawaii" released on DVD at 181minutes.......2007-05-18

I did some research and called Eric Doctorow's office at 310-369-4047 and let his associate know that a lot of consumers are looking for this movie to be rereleased without all the editing. Eric Doctorow is in charge of marketing of home video at Fox. His associate told me that he would pass my request on to marketing. The more people that call and air their request to them, the better the chances of getting what we want. I also mentioned that the 50th aniversary of Hawaii's statehood is comming up and that it might be an idea to reissue this movie.

I don't have a lot to add to what so many others have already said. There is truly no excuse for releasing such a severely edited version of this film on dvd. Now that MGM is being distributed by 20th Century Fox (one of the best dvd labels) instead of Sony (the worst of the major labels) perhaps they will consider issuing a new edition of this film.

It is always a little difficult deciding what to do when a movie you have waited years for is issued in an edition this inadequate. If you decide not to buy it does that send a message to MGM that they need to do a better job or do the low sales tell them that their lack of attention was justified? I decided not to buy this one. I am lucky enough to own the excellent, letter boxed vhs version of the uncut film and since it is not copy guarded I am able to transfer it to dvd. Obviously this is not the same as having a studio issued, anamorphic edition of the film, but it's better than having a version with the heart cut out of it. When MGM does the job right and issues a new, complete dvd of this film I will buy it on the day it is released.

3 out of 5 stars Thanks for the warning..........2006-08-12

I was just about to add this to my shopping cart when I read, to my horror, that 30 minutes were cut in a spectacular display of bad judgement on the part of MGM. The "pre-Hawaii" scenes were, to me, the most compelling scenes in the film: Jerusha saying goodbye to her little sister (movingly recalled years later when Abner says goodbye to thier daughter); Jerusha standing up to her husband during the voyage to Hawaii; the tragic death of one of the wives during childbirth and Abner's subsequent "You WILL LIVE, Jerusha" speech (which happens to be my favorite moment). I guess for now I'll stick with my double-VHS copy until MGM comes to thier senses.

3 out of 5 stars A Fair Result From A Difficult Text.......2007-05-15

TNT hit a home run with their BOBLE COLLECTION, based exclusively on the Old Testament. This was their first attempt at a New Testament book, the Revelation of John. That is a tough one to attempt the first time out but I can imagine while it would be appealing. There is much imagery that would be a natural for the screen. This film, however, falls short of that.

The early church is facing a time of persectution. That is the official policy of the Roman Empire. People of faith are worried and are encouraged on receiving letters from John, one of the original 12 disciples. John himself is in hiding, in a Roman prison. The story is one of keeping the faith in the face of sever hardships.

The film takes some liberties but they seem reasonable. It is not as tight an effort as the OT film but it is respectable. One can learn from it but do not expect any great joy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Biblical DVD collectors........2007-02-20

Great movie, loyal to the events that happened to the first Christians, to the book of Revelations and how St. John might have received those visions from God and great messages for us all. Well casted and directed movie. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A "Sword and Sandal" Classic!.......2006-11-06

If you are a history buff, and a "sword and sandal" film guru, like myself, you will enjoy this film. It is an historically accurate account of the book of revelations[Bible], as it was visually imparted to John[Richard Harris], the last living disciple of Christ. Even if you are not religiously-inclined, you will no doubt be entertained, and impressed with Harris's well-earned command of the silver screen.

4 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Revealed........2006-05-14

Folks, The Apocalypse is a retelling of the book of Revelation as received by the Apostle John, produced by Italian Radio TV. It is a very Catholic movie, as most of the consultants were Catholic and at least one Orthodox and it shows. But it is not blatantly Catholic, so basically any Christian will enjoy watching the movie.

You all know Richard Harris. His filmography is quite extensive and includes The Guns of Navarone (1961), The Bible (1966) titled The Bible... In the Beginning (in USA) & La Bibbia (in Italy), A Man Called Horse (1970), and two Harry Potter movies. The Apocalypse is his last movie and he delivers a powerful performance as John the Apostle. There's something about his raspy voice, which sounds old yet vital, imbued with authority and compassion that moves the viewer to listen carefully. All his actions seemed to very deliberate but not forced, very natural, without conceit. What an actor!

Actors Vittoria Belvedere and Benjamin Sadler play "Irene" and "Valerius" respectively, in a supporting role. Theirs is the "mandatory love affair" that we often see in these kinds of movie, but I assure that this affair is not vulgar, nor does it eclipse the plot. Irene had met the Apostle John when she was younger and now she's sent by the Bishop of Ephesus to track the Apostle in order to ensure the authenticity of the Apocalypse. Valerius is a Roman officer whose parents were Christians, having been adopted by a Roman general. He infiltrates the Ephesian Church, his mission being to locate the Apostle John, but he has second thoughts and...well, watch the movie.

The movie's strong points lie on its special effects. They carry the story well, without overwhelming it. John tells the story, and you see what he sees. Although the director-Rafaelle Mertes-threaded some current events into the movie to illustrate its prophetic aspects-including scenes from 9-11 to picture "war"-he does it without forcing the biblical text into modern fulfillments. What the director achieves is a correspondence of ideas. This is no "rapture" movie a la Left Behind..

The Apocalypse is a part of the The Bible Collection produced by Italian Radio-Television. This is the kind of movie that we must support. I hope you watch it

I also like the fact that there was no love or kiss scenes, they pulled that off nicely, Keanu and Rachel's chemistry was awesome, and I liked the "almost" kiss
