5 out of 5 stars Hey, it's TAGS on DVD. Let's celebrate!.......2007-07-05

I think it's wonderful that after watching TAGS in its first run, catching reruns on one tv station or another all my life, trying to tape it with a VCR since the 80s, and waiting, waiting, waiting, it's fantastic to see this classic, much-loved, and all-American series released in season sets which was only a dream a few years ago. Sure, I would love to have every single minute of the series on DVD, but I'm more than greatful that the powers that be finally heard TAGS' fans and decided to take the plunge into Myer's Lake. I hear the season sets are getting good reviews over the brine vats down at the pickle factory and they're bottling a new flavor called Kerosene Cucumber. Learn to love 'em!

2 out of 5 stars Can someone PLEASE post pics of this boxed set???.......2007-06-03

I cancelled my pre-order on this item after receiving the shoddy "complete series" boxed set of The Brady Bunch. I feared that Viacom/Paramount would issue a similarly shoddy "complete series" boxed set for The Andy Griffith Show and apparently they have.

3 out of 5 stars "There's a shame in this world".......2007-06-03

Well, one good thing is that if you are angry because you bought the individual season DVD sets (like I did) and wished you waited to buy the complete series box set for the extras and corrections, you need not sweat it. The missing epilogue and minutes to "The Darlings Are Coming" and the missing epilogue to "Barney Mends a Broken Heart" from season 3 were not restored to this set. The laugh tracks to a few episodes from season 4 have been restored, but that wasn't a big deal to me.

The "extra extras" you get from this series box set are available individually elsewhere if you look around. The pilot "Danny Meets Andy Griffith" is available edited on the "Make Room for Daddy" 5th season DVD set. The pilot included here is also edited. You can also find "Return to Mayberry" on DVD online and the other bonus is the episode "Opie Joins the Marines" where Opie visits Gomer on "Gomer Pyle USMC," which will be released in that series' second season set in a few months. I wish Paramount could have gathered some behind-the-scenes stuff or commentaries or interviews (the actors are not getting any younger and in just the past few years, many important TAGS people have died like Howard Morris and Don Knotts). That would have made this set worth it, but nothing like that is included.

What bugs me the most, though, is the crummy packaging: Cardboard folders and pockets with cut-out photos on the characters printed on it. At least make it the same as the individual sets with the plastic, easy-to-use holders and the bold and colorful illustrations. It's a great series, I love the shows (even the color episodes), but if you have already bought the seasons and are wondering if the series set is worth it, I would vote, 'no.' In fact, if you haven't bought anything from this series yet, I would still choose the indivdual seasons to this set.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, laugh tracks are fixed.. sadly, no salty dog. .......2007-06-01

This is absolutely my favorite show and I'm sure if you're looking at this set you love it too. :) It's like watching old home movies that you never tire of .. that remind you of the good in people .. home. My only complaint is that the set doesn't have all of the commercials that are available *but, it IS all that are on the previous sets.* The package isn't as sturdy as it should be. The first 2 discs in EVERY set were loose when I received my box. And elas, in FINALLY having the laugh tracks on the above episodes restored .. there isn't the performance of salty dog. So, at this price it really is a bargain .. and I still feel that way after having already purchased each individual season. Simply a MUST BUY for any fan! Thank you kindly for your time and patience. :)

3 out of 5 stars Great show poor packaging.......2007-06-01

Let me start out by saying I love the series, I bought all 8 seasons individually, and when it was released as a large box set I figured I would buy it and sell off my indivdual sets to save room in my DVD collection. I preordered the set and sold off all my individual sets.
My new set came in today, and I was thrilled to open the box, but once I opened it my thrill went away, This is by far the worst packaging of a DVD collection that I have ever seen. Each season is in a cardboard folded sleeve, and you slide the dvd into a cardboard slot, its cheap and flimsy and I am worried about the disks sliding in and out of these slots getting scratched, the individual season sleeves dont even fit nicely into the box. The whole box is a real mess when you look at it where the dvds slide in. and that is right out of the box from amazon. So if your thinking of upgrading your sets to this box set I would say keep what you got and dont upgrade, to the manufacture I would say the box set deserves better packaging than this. Most public domain packaging is better than this. MY review the show is a 5 the presentation/packaging is a 1.

Since its network debut in 1960, The Andy Griffith Show has been a viewer favorite thanks to its folksy, nostalgic charm and memorable cast, both of which shine in this set featuring the series' debut season. Originally spun off from an episode of Make Room for Daddy (both series shared producers Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas), The Andy Griffith Show centered around the lives of small-town sheriff Andy Taylor (the marvelously dry Griffith), his son Opie (Ron Howard), cousin and deputy Barney Fife (multiple Emmy winner Don Knotts), and the other gentle eccentrics of Mayberry (which was based on Griffith's real hometown). But while other "rural" programs poked fun at its characters (The Real McCoys, The Beverly Hillbillies), The Andy Griffith Show never stooped to stereotypes, preferring instead to draw its humor from the fine writing and cast, which counted Frances Bavier as Aunt Bee, Howard McNear as Floyd the Barber, and Hal Campbell as Mayberry's benevolent drunk, Otis, among the first season ensemble. All 32 episodes (including the epilogues, which are rarely aired in syndication) are compiled on this four-disc set, which regrettably lacks any supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Those Were the Days.......2007-06-25

The Andy Griffith Show is a relic from a bygone age and watching the show makes me long for that age. The show is set in rural North Carolina and features a widower sheriff trying to raise his young son. He has the help of his Aunt Bea and his incompetent but hilarious deputy, Barney Fife.

It's a great show. Episode synopses follow:

The New Housekeeper - In this premier episode, the housekeeper for the sheriff and Opie gets married and moves out. This makes Opie unhappy but Sheriff Andy sends for his Aunt Bea, who helped to raise him but Opie is having none of it. He doesn't want to give her a chance.

The Manhunt - Mayberry is thrown into confusion when a dangerous prisoner escapes and there is reason to believe he is headed towards Mayberry. When the state police arrive, they don't give the locals any respect and Andy is left out of it. They don't realize that Andy knows the local situation better than anyone.

Guitar Player - Andy has to pick up a guitar player for playing on the street. He is one of the best players Andy has ever heard but he doesn't have the confidence to try out for a big band. Andy comes up with a plan when he arrests a band coming through town in order to arrange for them to hear the guitar man.

Ellie Comes to Town - The town pharmacist gets sick and his niece comes to town to take over for him. Andy falls for her but she is busy trying to establish her credibility in town.

Irresistible Andy - Andy nervously manages to ask Ellie the new pharmacist to go to the church picnic with him. He has not had much experience with women lately. He manages to hack her off royally.

Runaway Kid - Andy gives Opie a talking to about keeping your word to your friends. Not long afterwards, a runaway shows up and Opie refuses to tell his dad the boy's name because he had given his word.

Andy the Matchmaker - Andy has to take drastic measures when Barney is threatening to resign because there is nothing for him to do. To make Barney think about something else, Andy arranges to do some matchmaking for him.

Opie's Charity - Sheriff Taylor is bitterly disappointed to learn that his son, Opie, is being stingy about giving to charity. What he doesn't know is that Opie's motives are not bad at all.

A Feud is a Feud - When a couple comes to Andy wanting to be married, he has lots of problems because their families have been carrying on the worst feud in the county.

Ellie for Council - Andy has trouble with Ellie when he makes disparaging remarks about women running for City Council. When she decides to run herself, the town goes wild.

Christmas Story - Christmas in Mayberry takes on a different tone when a local Scrooge manages to get a popular local thrown into jail. Mayberry does its best to bring Christmas to the prisoner.

Stranger in Town - A mysterious stranger shows up in Mayberry. He seems to know everybody's name and details about all their lives. Everyone finds this creepy.

Mayberry Goes Hollywood - Mayberry is a nice little town and that is why a Hollywood producer decides to shoot his next film there. Naturally, chaos ensues as the locals start acting differently.

The Horse Trader - Andy is tasked with getting rid of the old town canon and manages to pull off a lucrative but somewhat shady deal for the thing. He has second thoughts when Opie learns that it is alright to cheat people.

Those Gossipin' Men - Andy gives the old women of town a hard time about being gossips. The women are insulted an engage in a prank to show that men gossip too.

The Beauty Contest - The town fathers decide to hold a beauty pageant for their founder's day celebration and Andy is nominated to be a judge. When the competition gets fierce, it also gets ugly.

Alcohol and Old Lace - Andy and Barney arrest a series of moon shiners working in the Mayberry area. It never occurs to them that there is an ulterior motive to ladies reporting all those stills.

Andy, the Marriage Counselor - Andy and Barney have problems with a couple who are always arguing and disturbing the peace. In order to keep from having to arrest them all the time, he tries his hand as a marriage counselor.

Mayberry on Record - A record producer comes to town to make recordings of folk music. All seems fine until the locals decide to invest in the venture.

Andy Saves Barney's Morale - Andy has to leave town for a few hours and leaves Barney in charge. When he gets back, the entire town has been arrested. When all of the cases are dismissed, Andy has to do something to build back up Barney's morale.

Andy and the Gentleman Crook - A con man known throughout the country is brought to Mayberry for holding until extradition. His notoriety and manners have everyone, particularly Barney, eating out of his hands.

Cyrano Andy - Andy decides to help Barney woo his girl. He does fairly well until Barney thinks Andy is trying to steal his girl. The situation is not helped when the girl encourages Barney to try to provoke jealousy.

Andy and Opie, Housekeepers - When Aunt Bea has to leave town for a few days, Andy and Opie are left to fend for themselves.

The New Doctor - Andy is taking Ellie for granted but when a new young doctor shows up in town, Andy gets a bit jealous and Barney makes things worse.

A Plaque for Mayberry - A historical society tracks down the descendant of a Revolutionary war hero in Mayberry and wants to give the town a plaque. All are horrified to learn that the descendant is the town drunk.

The Inspector - A State inspector arrives in Mayberry to check on the local lockup. The new inspector is a stickler for the rules and is not impressed.

Ellie Saves a Female - Ellie decides she wants to give some nice knick-knacks to a poor girl but her father doesn't approve. He is too proud. Ellie's persistence stirs up the father.

Andy Forecloses - Andy is called upon to serve a foreclosure on a nice family that has fallen on hard times. All efforts to solve the problem seem to fail because of the mean lien holder.

Quiet Sam - A recluse causes suspicion since he has little to do with anyone. Many think he is hiding something but Andy refuses to jump to conclusions. Barney jumps to enough for everyone.

Barney Gets his Man - Barney accidentally captures a big time criminal and becomes the town hero. Then the prisoner escapes and Barney remembers his promise of vengeance.

The Guitar Player Returns - The guitar player from "THE GUITAR MAN" returns to town as a successful musician. The town is all ready to roll out the red carpet but Andy realize that something is wrong.

Bringing Up Opie - Aunt Bea is worried about Opie spending so much time around the jail so he is told not to go there anymore. A bored Opie runs away and gets into trouble.

5 out of 5 stars No commercials, Yahoo!.......2007-05-18

The early Andy Griffith seasons take me back to when life took it's good old time. I can't find much on T.V. nowadays except junk. Yuk! The best thing about these seasons (and especially Barney!) is NO COMMERCIALS. Yahoo! I'm seeing wonderful, funny scenes I've never seen before (scenes which were cut to allow for those endless strings of commercials . . . scenes which add flavor to each show.) These heartwarming episodes are a nice way to spend time with family, friends, or even when alone, while having a good laugh.
    Happy viewing!

The Andy Griffith Show hit its stride during its third season (1962-63), admirably restored in this five-disc, 32-episode boxed set. Andy Griffith perfects his levelheaded Sheriff Andy Taylor; Don Knotts is unsurpassed as the comically neurotic Barney Fife; and Ron Howard continues his legendary run as earnest Opie. The season opens with the endearing episode "Mr. McBeevee," Opie's friend in the trees who Andy believes to be a figment of his son's imagination. From there, every disc contains renowned classics, such as "Floyd, the Gay Deceiver" starring the dashing Howard McNear; "Andy and Opie, Bachelors" offering some of the season's greatest quips; and "The Darlings Are Coming," that crazy clan of mountain musicians including the overtly flirtatious Charlene. The season is acclaimed for introducing several new, recurring characters into the cast including Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors), "Miss Peggy" (Joanna Moore), and Helen Crump (Aneta Corsaut). Except for two episodes missing closing epilogue scenes (which Paramount discloses), the set contains 13 hours of full-length, uncut, black-and-white magic. Also included is the originally aired "Fishin' Hole" theme music throughout the collection, as well as more than two dozen "Sponsor Spots," vintage commercial advertisements featuring the show's cast. Don't miss the season highlight, "Man In A Hurry," a touching story where Malcolm Tucker delivers the now-famous summation of Mayberry, "Outrageous… a whole town is standing still because two old women's feet fall asleep," precisely the reason why this beloved sitcom remains a timeless treasure. 5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWS EVER! .......2007-06-12

What more can be said about this show that hasn't already!? It is just television at it's finest. Season 3 is a really good one with some of my favorite episodes. The DVD transfer is excellent and is a must have for fans of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Original Sponsor Spots?.......2007-05-05

Some of the first complete season sets -- seasons two through four, I believe -- had the original sponsor spots included as bonus features. Will the complete series also have those commercials? That was a HUGE bonus, as far as I was concerned. I don't want to lose them ...

Any information would be appreciated ...

4 out of 5 stars Paramount, Please fix the edited episodes!.......2007-04-23

Although the problem with episodes in Season 4 seem to be fixed, the following episodes are still edited in the Season 3 set.

"The Darlings Are Coming" - Almost 3 minutes have been edited out including the epilogue and the Darling's musical performance of "Salty Dog." This is a CLASSIC Darling family tune! Strange that this episode would be edited on the official Paramount release. It is complete and uncut on many of the non-Paramount public domain Andy Griffith Show DVDs. Check out the release from Brentwood Home Video.

In "Barney Mends A Broken Heart" the epilogue is definitely missing. It's a very short scene AFTER Peggy and Andy hug and make up. Peggy is seen nursing Andy's blackened eye while Barney let's it slip that he and Andy were out with other women. This epilogue appears on an old store bought video I have from UAV Home Video. Curiously on this tape, the episode is edited, but the epilogue is there.

Hopefully these episodes will be corrected on the new, all-season box set slated for release in late May of 2007. Not holding my breath, though.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best!.......2007-04-11

I rate these episodes with 5 stars. I have all the seasons DVD's and will watch them over and over. They are good for families to watch together and for children to watch and they should be watched in schools as a subject, I think. Teaches so much about manners and honest living. I say everyone needs to buy these episodes. Awesome!!

5 out of 5 stars TV at its best.......2007-03-27

The adventure continues. Greatest TV series ever made in my opinion. 3rd series continues the comedy. Viowers should beware however that after the 5th season Don Knots (Barney) left the show and the quality declined.

The Andy Griffith Show returns on DVD with its complete second season, a five-disc collector's set of 31 episodes more memorable than one of Aunt Bee's "kerosene cucumbers." Set in the small town of Mayberry, the television series (1960-1968) followed the hilarious antics of widower Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith), his son Opie (Ron Howard), and Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts). It has achieved cult status as one of television's most beloved sitcoms for its stellar cast, pristine comedy, and nostalgic charm. By season two, the series found its tone and tenor, proved by such classic episodes as "The Pickle Story," "The Manicurist," and "Barney and the Choir." After viewers endure (or skip) Paramount's half dozen promotional trailers at the beginning of disc one, they can bask in 13 hours of restored, uninterrupted, black and white television magic. The season's parade of guest stars includes Barbara Eden, Buddy Ebsen, Alan Hale Jr., Bill Bixby, and Sterling Holloway. Whereas the first season's DVD set was without bonus material, this collection features sponsor spots, original commercial advertisements (linked to individual episodes) where the show's cast members promote brands such as "Sanka" coffee and "Post" breakfast cereals--a guaranteed smile. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVDs.......2007-06-10

The DVDs were received in a very timely manner and in excellent condition. They made a perfect Mother's Day gift! Pleasure doing business with...would do business with again. Highly recommended seller! Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Operation currently prohibited by disk.......2007-05-15

Thank you, Paramount, for the second season of the Andy Griffith Show on DVD. However, during the minutes of promos at the beginning of the disk, my top menu button, menu button, and stop button, on my DVD remote control don't work. The screen message is "operation currently prohibited by disk". This is uncalled for. I paid for the DVD. I should be able to play any section, any time, I want. Being forced to watch your promos is something I don't want.

    5 out of 5 stars A gem, of a collection!.......2007-05-07

We loved this collection. Having not grown up watching this show I wasn't sure what to expect. I found myself laughing alot! Where this differs from many shows of its kind is that I didn't always see the jokes coming
and the plot wasn't always obvious. Don Knotts Andy Griffith and especially Ron Howard work brilliantly as the central characters.
I liked this series better than the several episodes I have seen
in the 'Best of" dvd sets.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST!.......2007-04-04

Everyone needs to own these classics! It's not easy finding shows to watch that are clean and good for the entire family. My 5 year old daughter is even an Andy Griffith fan and can tell you in detail about her favorite episodes. :) My 2 year old loves Opie and would rather watch the Andy Griffith show than any other cartoon. The Andy Griffith series is a must have for every families collection.

When did Mayberry turn into Potterville? In The Andy Griffith Show's fifth season, Opie (Ronny Howard) buys silk stockings for an older woman, and publishes all of Mayberry's gossip in a scandal sheet. Sheriff Andy Taylor (Griffith) is accused of gross malfeasance. A former beau of Aunt Bee's tries to shake Andy down for $400. Bee herself (Frances Bavier) is a victim of a carny purse-snatching ring. And recidivists Otis (Hal Smith) and Ernest T. (Howard Morris) continue their drinking and rock-throwing unabated. As Bee wails in "Banjo-Playing Deputy," "What's this world coming to?" Not to worry. This is, after all, Mayberry, and Andy still has the patience, understanding and country smarts to restore calm and order. In "TV or Not TV," he sees through bank robbers (led by Gavin MacLeod) posing as a Hollywood film crew. In "Opie and the Carnival," he takes aim at two crooked barkers who have rigged a sharpshooting game. As the sheriff of Mayberry, much of his time is spent bailing out his hapless deputy, Barney Fife (Don Knotts). In "Barney's Uniform," Andy recruits a judo instructor to stand in when Barney is threatened by a disgruntled citizen.

Season 5 marked two notable lasts for this beloved series, which never fell below the Top Seven in the ratings. This was the last season in black and white. More devastating, it was multi-Emmy-winner Knotts' last season as Barney Fife. By the penultimate episode, "Opie and the Carnival," he is just gone, an unceremonious departure for an iconic character so integral to the show's success. That "Banjo-Playing Deputy" in the season finale is Jerry Van Dyke, who might have been a worthy replacement for Knotts. Instead, he reportedly turned down the role to star in his own sitcom, My Mother, the Car. The rest is TV infamy. By this time, though, The Andy Griffith Show's best years were behind it. But this season contains at least two classics, "Goodbye Sheriff Taylor," in which Barney is sheriff for a day while Andy interviews for a job in Raleigh, and "The Case of the Punch in the Nose," in which Barney reopens an unresolved 1946 case involving Floyd the Barber and Charley Foley. And with episodes featuring the late Howard Morris' Ernest T. ("The Education of Ernest T."), the Darling family ("The Darling Baby"), Mt. Pilot "fun girls" Skippy and Daphne ("The Arrest of the Fun Girls"), and a guest star turn by Don Rickles ("The Luck of Newton Monroe"), Andy Griffith Show devotees are advised to take the Fifth. --Donald Liebenson

I know this will put off some TAGS fans, but this is truely the last great season. I loved the show to the end,but there are big gaps in the seasons after this one. Season 5 however has some classic episodes and some of my favorits too! The DVD transfer is excellent on this set.

      5 out of 5 stars Best TV.......2007-05-31

As stated in other reviews, best TV series ever made in my opinion. Black and White and Don Knots (Barney) at their best. Buyers beware that after this 5th season they went to color and Don Knots (Barney) was gone. Show went downhill a lot starting with 6th season (next season after this one) in my opinion. I own the first 5, would not buy the last 3.

5 out of 5 stars Make yourself at home in Mayberry...even if Barney couldn't..........2006-12-09

I'm so glad these DVD box sets exist, because they gave a twenty-something such as myself the opportunity to become acquainted with one of America's finest television programs...

The story is set in the fictitious little town of Mayberry, North Carolina during the early 1960s. Sheriff Andy Taylor (played by Andy Griffith) is a widower with a small son. He asks his Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) to move in with him and Opie (Ron Howard) as housekeeper and surrogate mother.

Many of the storylines center upon Opie's childhood dilemmas and coming-of-age situations. While Andy is quick to discipline his son, he is also understanding of the gray areas a child might encounter, and no matter the outcome of a situation, he strives to enforce in Opie the need for kindness and truth.

Other storylines focus upon Barney Fife (played by Don Knotts) as Andy's cousin and the town's deputy sheriff. Thanks to Barney's false pride and need to appear all-knowing, Andy spends much of his time trying to straighten out various situations that might otherwise have never occurred. Still, it's apparent that Barney has a good heart, and his sense of humor more than make up for the trouble he often stirs up.

Mayberry also includes a number of unique residents, such as Floyd, the kindhearted but vague barber; Otis, the town drunk who is trusted to let himself into his cell as needed; rock-throwing hlllbilly Ernest T. Bass; Barney's ever-patient girlfriend, Thelma Lou; the goofy and childlike mechanic Goober; and Opie's teacher Helen Crump, who is also Andy's girlfriend.

My pet peeve with this season is the disappearance of Barney. Although Don Knotts chose not to renew his contract, there was no reason for the deputy to leave...and the writers gave none. One episode, Barney is alongside Andy, as he has been for years; the next, he is simply gone, with no explanation. In the next season, he returns as a guest star, and it is then said that Barney left town to take a better job. Still, it's almost an insult to faithful viewers; that explanation should've been given immediately!

If you haven't ever seen an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show," give this box set a try! You'll soon be searching for further seasons.

All good things must come to an end--even a classic TV series like The Andy Griffith Show--but most would hope to close out their network run like the venerable rural comedy series did, with its popularity intact (Griffith brought the show to a close with its ratings at #1) and its episodes still featuring the gentle, observant humor that marked every visit to Mayberry since its debut in 1960. Few changes can be seen in the 30 episodes compiled here, save for the color broadcast (which came to pass during the '65-'66 season) and the arrival of Sam Jones (the likable Ken Berry), another amiable widower who became the focus of the spin-off series, Mayberry R.F.D. Otherwise, it's business as usual in Mayberry, which includes a welcome return visit from Don Knotts' Barney Fife (in "Barney Hosts a Summit Meeting," where he convinces Andy to let the U.S. and Soviet governments host a summit in his home), a turn in the role of deputy for Goober (George Lindsay) in "Suppose Andy Gets Sick," a great deal of tomfoolery by newer characters Howard Sprague (Jack Dodson) and Emmett Clark (Paul Hartman), and guest appearances by Jack Nicholson ("Aunt Bee the Juror"), Allan (The Brady Bunch) Melvin ("Howard's Main Event") and Morgan Brittany as "Opie's First Love." Fans may debate on the quality of the final season in comparison to those that preceded it (and to be fair, there are a handful of less-than-stellar episodes, most notably "Opie's Group," which finds Andy's son joining a rock band), but the comfortable performances by the cast help to smooth over any rough patches. As with all previous Griffith boxed sets, no extras are featured here. -- Paul Gaita

      Description

It was a colorful season eighth for The Andy Griffith Show, 30 more fun-filled visits to the familiar streets of Mayberry, and to the warm-hearted folks who brought the town to life. By all accounts, this was the most successful season yet for the critically acclaimed family show. It was the top-rated half-hour of the 1966-'67 season and earned two Emmy® Awards for the supporting work of Don Knotts (as fumbling Barney Fife) and Frances Bavier (as beloved Aunt Bee). Relive your favorite Mayberry moments and join Andy (Andy Griffith), Opie (Ron Howard), Floyd (Howard McNear, in his final season) and the rest of the town for this five-disc odyssey to a time and place when mistakes, misadventures, and even disagreements eventually would work out just fine.

If you are a fen of this show and you like seasons 6 and 7 you will like season 8 the final season. Not much stands out in this season except it is the end of a great run and opens the door for Mayberry RFD.....NO THANKS! This is still a worthy purchase for fans of TAGS.

5 out of 5 stars Great series ending.......2007-06-05

I have the entire Andy Griffith series. This is an excellent conclusion to the previous boxed sets of the seasons. The DVDs with advertising that can't be skipped gets annoying, but it is a minor inconveniance.

For anyone who enjoys this series, this is a great conclusion that you will watch many times.

5 out of 5 stars The Best TV Show of All-Time.......2007-05-14

Everyone in my family loves these shows. From young to old - the humor is clean and hilarious. Why can't they still make shows like this one today?

3 out of 5 stars Andy Griffith- A Great Family Show.......2007-04-28

Our family really has been enjoying the Andy Griffith show and am close to owning all the DVD seasons. I purchased the Final (8th) season in January but was a bit disappointed with most episodes. It seems that Barney Fife (Don Knotts) really made this show, because without him in this season there is a sense of incompleteness in the casting. It also becomes a bit predictable unlike earlier seasons.

If I would have had a known in advance, I would have not purchased this season. The earlier seasons are great.

All in all, AG Show a is great classic American television show.

      3 out of 5 stars "Opie's Group," A.K.A. "Opie Taylor...Behind The Music".......2007-03-19

Yes, the classic Andy Griffith shows were seasons 1 through 5, the black and white years featuring Don Knotts as a regular. But the "color years" (seasons 6 through 8), as controversial as they are among fans, still contain a wealth of material that's far superior to what passes as a "sitcom" on modern television. The final season carried on without Floyd (one of the most vital characters, next to Barney Fife). It featured an extreme overdose of Howard Sprague...reminds me of the old SCTV skit in which "Floyd" (Eugene Levy) goes to Godfather "Don Caballero" (Joe Flaherty) to "ask a favor"..."I want you to kill Howard Sprague"...now THAT'S classic. The one essential episode in the final season is "Opie's Group"...it's true classic television cheese as Opie rocks the nation, stopping only to have Emmett at the Fix-It shop "adjust his amp" (perhaps to make it go to 11?)...If you love rock and roll, and you love the Andy Griffith show, get season 8. You'll be reminded of Van Halen's song "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" as Opie goes to the edge, stands and looks down, loses a lot of friends there, and...well, just GET IT.

Ask a certain portion of diehard Andy Griffith Show fans why the series' sixth season (1965-66) is less well-loved than others from its eight-year run, and the answer boils down to four words: "Warren Ferguson" and "color episodes." Played by veteran comedian and writer Jack Burns, Warren was the replacement for Don Knotts' Barney Fife as Andy's sheriff, and lasted for just eleven of the season's 30 episodes before vanishing without a trace. The brickbats heaved at Warren are undeserved, though; replacing the multi-Emmy-winning Knotts was a task that few performers would have relished facing (and indeed, Knotts earned another Emmy for his return to the series in two episodes, "The Return of Barney Fife" and "The Legend of Barney Fife"), and Burns certainly gives his all (including his signature, rapid-fire "huh-huh-huh" gag line) to the character. He's no Barney Fife, and who could be, aside from Knotts? As for the color issue, the debate seems to be centered entirely around preference, although it's true that in syndication, viewer response has been traditionally stronger to the black-and-white broadcasts of seasons 1-5.

Aside from the Barney/Warren and color controversies, the sixth season is notable for the final appearances of supporting characters Malcolm Merriweather (Bernard Fox) and Ernest T. Bass (the great Howard Morris) in "Malcolm at the Crossroads" (in which the pair tangle over a crosswalk), as well as such fun episodes as "The Taylors in Hollywood" (Andy, Opie, and Aunt Bee react to a movie being made about them, with The Love Boat's Gavin McLeod as the movie Andy); "Andy's Rival" (Charles Aidman guest stars as a new teacher whose working relationship with Helen Crump makes Andy nervous); and "Otis the Artist" (an amusing Warren episode, in which he suggests painting to Otis as a substitute for drinking). Andy Griffith completists will also note the presence of Jack Dodson in the episode "Lost and Found"; Dodson would later join the series as Deputy Howard Sprague and transition with most of the supporting cast to Mayberry R.F.D. As with previous Griffith boxed sets, this five-disc set features no extras. --Paul Gaita

It's hard to accept change and TAGS had plenty of them in season 6! First off Barney was not a regular, second Opie got older and was not the cute little kid anymore, third Warren had some pretty big shoes to fill and losing Gomer the year before before this season didn't help either. I still liked the show, but it never had the same magic. One of the biggest changes no one mentions is Andy. In the early years he was very easy going and happy always ready to poke a little fun at Barney. In the later years he became.....well sort of mean!? It seems his new role was to scold Aunt Bee(for buying too much beef etc.) or yell at Floyd and Goober. Anyway,it is still worth my money and if your a fan your as well.

      5 out of 5 stars FUN!.......2007-05-14

Too bad the series couldn't go on forever. Still a joy after all these years.

The Andy Griffith show certainly did, in my opinion, experience a noticeable decrease in quality during it's final three seasons, beginning in season six. Arguably I shouldn't be writing this review since I don't own the DVD set of season six. I do however own seasons one through five and since I would rate the quality of those DVD sets themselves as five, the show itself at season six was only average, at best, so the best I could give it would be a three. Therefore, I settled on a four rating. I am writing this in part because the season six set keeps coming up in my "recommended" section of Amazon and I keep seeing this note of "die hard fans" blaming the color episodes and Warren for the show's demise. I will very bluntly say the show had problems in season six but these problems were far more than the departure of Don Knotts, the coming of Jack Burns, and the changeover to filming in color.

First of all forget any myth that color film affected the quality of the show. Color shows were simply coming into vogue at that point. Many shows, The Beverly Hillbillies, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, and My Favorite Martian just to name a few, switched from black and white to color about that same time. Green Acres debuted in color I think this very same 1965-66 season. The color film made no difference. The first five seasons would have been just as good in color, the final three would have been no better in black and white. There were several problems with the show that just happened to be coming to the surface at the same time the switch to color was made.

Believe it or not, I don't believe the departure of Don Knotts was the first problem, though of course it was huge. The first problem was one many shows hit after four or five years or so in the originality, freshness, and creativity were all beginning to fade away. This obviously affected the overall quality. By season six, some major characters had left and others were changing. But I believe the problems actually started, though less noticeably, in season five, which had some very weak episodes. There are very few shows lasting longer than five years that maintain it's high quality throughout. M*A*S*H, Cheers, and Barney Miller are three possible exceptions, and I think all three of those were fading towards the end of their runs. It's simply difficult to maintain the high quality level for years and years on TV sitcoms and Andy was no exception. That and the first major character departure affected season five. The carry over and new problems that arose combined to make season six the first season in noticeable decline.

While so much emphasis is placed on Don Knotts departure, his was not the first. The show took it's first turn downward when Jim Nabors left after season four, taking the character of Gomer with him to do Gomer Pyle, USMC. A move you could hardly blame him for. Replacing him with the character of Goober was absolutely the correct choice and George Lindsay did an excellent job in his portrayal of the character. But the character itself was never as entertaining as Gomer was. Goober had his moments, but sometimes he could be irritatingly stupid, most notably on Helen's front porch. And did he really have to wear that crown shape hat and his pants so high? In my opinion, season five, though worth owning, suffered some from the switch from Gomer to Goober as well as some freshness already starting to fade.

Don Knott's departure after season five clearly left a huge hole in the show. Very wisely the character of Barney was not retained to by played by a different actor. That would have never worked. Jack Burns stepped into a very difficult situation and with no real disrespect intended, he was not the best choice as the replacement. I have heard Jerry Van Dyke was offered the role. If so, and had he accepted and brought in some of the characteristics of his Stacie Petrie character he played twice on brother Dick's show, that might have been better. The only other actor I can think of at the time who might have portrayed a role similar to Barney would have been Bob Denver. But of course he had his own show (and island) at the time. Jack Burns had some success in his career, most notably as half the Burns & Schrieber partnership with partner Avery. I suppose his huh huh huh routine was intended to irritate and frustrate Andy similar to the way Barney did in his own and very different way. But it just didn't work. Some shows, again like M*A*S*H and Cheers, survive major characters leaving and casting changes but most don't and unfortunately Andy fell into that latter category.

Some characters were staying but were changing. Howard McNear was sick and the character of Floyd suffered as a result. Eventually you never saw Floyd standing and his voice became weaker. Ron Howard was growing up and Opie wasn't as cute any more. Ron was an excellent child actor and I have never seen another child on a TV sitcom that was as funny or as well played as Opie. But as Ron grew up the character of Opie had no choice but go with him. It was unavoidable, but the character of Opie suffered as a result by losing much of his original charm and humor. And Andy's character himself was changing. He no longer represented the "wit and wisdom of Andy Griffith", to quote his late 50's album, and he was no longer the smart one. Admittedly, some of the "countrified" portion of Andy's early personality needed to be toned down some and it later was though he was still funny in addition to being both wise and smart. But by season six he seemed to be switching often from stoic to exasperated and often he was wrong about things like could Opie play football, take piano, and do schoolwork. Or how he handled, or really didn't handle, Opie playing in the little pop rock band or going to his first dance when he didn't want to go.

I hope you'll understand I am not saying the final three years were terrible or even bad. I am however saying they were nowhere near the level of quality the first five were, especially seasons two through four where the show would rank right along with the best TV comedy sitcoms in history. I have simply shared my own views, which are no better or worse than anyone else's, about why I think the show slipped towards the end of it's run and point out it wasn't all about Barney absence and had nothing to do with color film. In closing, consider this. Over the course of several years the characters of Gomer, Barney, and Floyd all disappeared and were replaced, directly or indirectly, by Goober, Warren (and then nobody), Howard, and Emmitt. Personally, I think that alone speaks volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Make yourself at home in Mayberry..........2006-12-09

Other storylines focus upon Warren Ferguson, the town's deputy sheriff. In previous seasons, the role was played by Don Knotts, who was Andy's cousin Barney. But somewhere in Season 5, Barney simply disappears without an explanation, and is "replaced" - rather poorly - by Warren. The character is just as bumbling and good-hearted as Barney, but lacks Don Knotts' charisma, especially when fans have been accustomed to five years of it.

Mayberry also includes a number of unique residents, such as Floyd, the kindhearted but vague barber; Otis, the town drunk who is trusted to let himself into his cell as needed; rock-throwing hlllbilly Ernest T. Bass; the goofy and childlike mechanic Goober; and Opie's teacher Helen Crump, who is also Andy's girlfriend.

If you haven't ever seen an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show," give this box set a try! You'll soon be searching for further seasons.

2 out of 5 stars Not just a Barney issue.......2006-09-14

It has been years since viewing the color seasons of Andy Griffith. I remember it being a Barney issue. No Barney, not funny. But, after purchasing it and seeing it again, it does not have that much to do with Barney being gone. OK, it is a factor......Don Knotts was funny! But, the character of Andy changed drastically.........to this annoying, angry, yelling all the time, grouch! What happened to the loving father knows best Andy? Several episodes are nothing but he and Helen being angry at each other and bickering.....it's just not funny. I watched the whole series without even a smile, let alone a laugh! Warren, who I remember being beyond annoying was not that bad. The huh, huh, huh, stuff we all remember was exaggerated by other actors taking off on him.....he really does not say it that much. We won't be getting another season.
Ok, I've watched them a few more times and there are a few "cute" episodes. Aunt Bee learning to drive is comical, Warren being obsessed about the cannon is also entertaining, along with Goober thinking his dog can talk. I have to stand by.....the color seasons just don't cut it. I think the best one is Season Three!

The Andy Griffith Show's seventh season (1966-67) was the beginning of the end for the venerable family comedy (Griffith brought it to a close with the next season), but the gentle humor and likable characters that helped make it one of the most popular series on television are still in fine form. Chief among the season's plusses is a two-episode return visit from Don Knotts as Barney Fife--in "A Visit to Barney Fife," Andy helps his former deputy find his footing at his new precinct in Raleigh, North Carolina, while in "Barney Comes to Mayberry," Barney reunites with his old flame, Irene Flogg, now a glamorous movie star. The latter episode, among the most popular of the series, won Knotts his fifth Emmy for portraying Barney. Otherwise, it's business as usual in Mayberry, with series regulars Frances Bavier (Aunt Bee), George Lindsey (Goober), Hal Smith (Otis), and a very grown-up Ron Howard (Opie) delivering their usual warm and funny performances. The show's new face, Jack Dodson (later Mickey Malph on Happy Days) fares considerably better as a Barney substitute than the ill-fated Jack Burns; as mother-dominated town clerk Howard Sprague, Dodson gets some very funny moments, especially in "Howard the Comedian," where he embarrasses the citizens of Mayberry with his TV standup debut. Also on hand: Aneta Corsaut as Helen Crump, Denver Pyle and the Dillards as the hillbilly collective known as the Darling Family, and an ailing Howard McNear as Floyd the barber; McNear had suffered a stroke and lost much of his mobility, but Griffith made arrangements that allowed him to continue on the show in a more relaxed capacity. Though perhaps not up to par with its earlier, black-and-white episodes, the seventh season of The Andy Griffith Show still has plenty of what made the show an enduring classic: low-key charm and homespun humor. The five-disc set has no supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

      Description

It was a colorful season seven for The Andy Griffith Show, 30 more fun-filled visits to the familiar streets of Mayberry, and to the warm-hearted folks who brought the town to life.

4 out of 5 stars STILL A GREAT SHOW, JUST NOT AS GREAT!.......2007-06-13

This is where the show really starts to change. Andy becomes a little harder and not the same carefree fellow we all came to know and love. It's not that he isn't likable anymore,it's just that his character has to assume a new role. He is a much more serious Andy. Floyd had to step up for some needed comic relief along with Goober. Still a worthy enry in my DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Best TV Show.......2007-01-09

Great DVD and a as continuation in a series is as good as the ones before it.

      4 out of 5 stars Better Season.......2007-01-05

This season of Mayberry is much better than the 6th one! I swore I would not buy another season...but Mayberry beckoned! Last season (season 6), there were too many changes in the characters and the plot lines. Everyone changed to compensate for Barney being gone. This season many of the characters find their own. Aunt Bee's character is funnier in this season and so is Opie! Ron Howard's Opie finds a quick wit that adds a lot to the show. The character of Howard Sprague is a very likeable one. In season 6, his mama's boy wimpiness was too annoying. This season, they get him away from that, (not that mom does not try to hold on strong to him, but he breaks free!) This is he last season with Floyd, who is one of my favorites! He suffered a stroke and the effects of it by the final episode are very apparent. They did well writing in Floyd sitting down in his scenes, or using an apparatus they built to help him stand (which is infrequent). Andy is not as angry in this season and he and Helen are not fighting over stupidity in every episode as in season 6. Although Andy is still a bit of a chauvinist, it is tolerable. The honesty that he started with in the first episodes seems to have gone by the wayside. In several episodes, the characters will not speak to one of the others or temporarily hate them because they do not agree with them, such as in the baseball episode where Andy calls Opie out....the whole town won't speak to him. The lack of honesty and the pettiness is the reason I give this season a 4 star instead of a 5. Otherwise, it is a good season. Even though it is a color season...

      5 out of 5 stars wonderful stories.......2007-01-04

They say thqt stories are at the bottom of our way of taking in reality and these stories are warm and wonderful and paint the picture of life as somehow we dream it. We have friends here who we wished we had in real life. So it doesn't exist in real life. It must exist somewhere inside of us and mean something.

5 out of 5 stars Make yourself at home in Mayberry..........2006-12-09

My pet peeve with this point in the series is the disappearance of Barney in Season 5.

Goober fans, rejoice--the arrival of George Lindsay's popular character is just one of the homespun joys of The Andy Griffith Show's fourth season, which has been compiled on this five-disc set. Lindsay as Goober Pyle, cousin to Jim Nabors's Gomer, makes his debut in one of the season's funniest episodes, "Fun Girls," which is also the only time Gomer and Goober appeared together on screen. By season's end, Gomer would depart for his own series (season 4's final episode, "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.," would serve as the pilot for that program), but before then, he enjoyed some fine episodes, including "Andy Saves Gomer" (from a fire at the filing station) and "Citizen's Arrest" (a knockout showcase for Nabors and Don Knotts, who is topnotch, as always, as Barney Fife). Other supporting characters get a spotlight or two in season 4, including Howard Morris's Ernest T. Bass ("Hot Rod Otis, "Otis T. Bass Joins the Army") and Denver Pyle and Maggie Peterson's Briscoe and Charlene Darling ("Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee"), but of course, the crux of the show remains Andy and son Opie (Ron Howard), who do stand-out work in the well-loved "Opie the Birdman," which addresses serious topics--death and responsibility--in the series' typically warm and humane manner. No supplemental features accompany the 32 black-and-white episodes, but that won't detract one bit from spending some quality time with the good people of Mayberry. --Paul Gaita
