Great Gurus!.......2007-05-09

Simple to review - this is a must if your a fan and a damn fine choice if your just discovering them! Caught them at SXSW this year - Playing "Stoneage Romeos" track for track. That's where I first saw this DVD. It's a brilliant look back and some current info as well! It's great to finally be able to see(in good quality)those videos never available in North America. Pick it up if you even know who they are you won't be disappointed.

Just think, I used to like this movie........2007-01-23

I saw Tunnel Vision when it first came out and I bought it on video. I used to like this movie, but now I see it as a bad TV parody. There are a couple of good bits, like the commercial about the phaser, unfortunately that is followed by a sketch about a game show where contestants are rewarded for revealing their bad behavior, like child beating. The worst part was the sketch about the very dysfunctional gypsy family. There are a couple of prophetic pieces (four television networks and an oil company with an Exxon-like name spilling oil into the ocean), but this is a sadly-dated movie that should never have been made in the first place.

Huge Waste of Money & Time.......2004-12-04

The only reason why I rated this item 1 star is because they would not let me rate it NEGATIVE 5 stars. Whoever wrote this was uncreative, struggling so desperately for a creative skit. It would almost stand to logic that the people who produced this waste of time and money actually owe me twice of what I paid for it; once for the cost of the dvd, and another for the time I spent watching it (my time is money).

A step below Groove Tube, Tunnelvision is still pretty funny. The best parts are of course Chevy Chase, Laraine Newman in Ramon & Sonja, a hilarious sketch, the game show, John Candy's spot in Get Head, as well as many of the many commercial parodies. Only a few problems exist.
1: no inside booklet
2: too jumpy, there are 12 chapter selections and, like... thirty chapters
3: no cast bio's (other cool features, but, no bio's!)
Still it's worth a few laughs and the money, should be intended for those who have seen the Groove Tube & want more.
Great cast though: Chevy Chase (Caddyshack), John Candy (Great Outdoors), Laraine Newman, Al Franken, Tom Davis, Betty Thomas, Howard Hessman, Neal Irael (Bachelor Party).

A blast from the past but Chase and Candy are not the stars.......2003-01-05

Tunnel Vision is the name of a fictional TV Network similar to S.C.T.V. The premise is that in the not too distant future (1985) Tunnel Vision will have knocked out the other three big networks and left the entire population a mass of vegetating slackers. I'm not sure if Howard Hesseman is all that believable as a Senator, but it's fun to see him in action. This upstart network is on trial and we are led to the courtroom where the "evidence" is put on display. One of the first items that date the video right away is when they run through a brief visual history of the US presidents. The list pauses briefly on Lincoln and Kennedy and makes its way up to Ford before it shows us the subsequent "future" ones.
Now of course the political commentary is not as sharp as the best of Saturday Night Live, there is nowhere near the polish, but it does have its charm. I was reminded of the similar vintage Woody Allen movies like "Take the Money and Run" with the voice-overs and exteriors.
Essentially it looks as though this tape was packaged to cash in on Chevy Chase's and John Candy's faces but they have very little to do on screen. Chase's bit is less than a minute and Candy's is not even a speaking role.
And the low spots are in the skits. There is one Hispanic Bunker-like skit that has Laraine Newman using the F-word and is generally just unfunny mostly due to the quantity of racial slurs which neither seem to comment on or inform any particular world view.

Sketchy.......2005-04-22

Just prior to the explosion of the "edgy" late-night TV comedy sketch shows in the late 70's ("Saturday Night", "SCTV", "Fridays", etc.), a trio of low-budget films introduced a new style of drug-fueled, anarchic post-Watergate counter-culture satire. Those films were "The Groove Tube", "The Kentucky Fried Movie", and the subject of this review, "Tunnel Vision". All three were loosely thematic sketch collections with a "National Lampoon" approach to socio-political, sexual and media satire. 1975's "Tunnel Vision" is probably the "weakest" of the three, but still worth collecting. "Tunnel Vision" has the most historical interest, with early appearances by Chevy Chase, Lorraine Newman, Franken & Davis, John Candy and Joe Flaherty (many of whom were members of Second City improv). You can also spot Howard Hesseman, Betty Thomas (future director of Howard Stern's "Private Parts"), Ron Silver (in one of the funniest bits) and many more members of then-prominent improv groups like The Committee and The Ace Trucking Company. The Firesign Theatre's Phil Proctor appears as a Ted Turner type who runs the fictional "Tunnelvison" TV channel; the premise is that he is being grilled by a senate subcommitee (in the year 1985!) on the content of his popular but "obscene" programming (hmmm, 30 years later and the post-Janet Jackson F.C.C. STILL hasn't come out of the dark ages-this film was ahead of its time!) This is the setup for the ensuing collection of commercial parodies and TV show satires. DVD notes: The transfer is not the best, but servicable. Firesign Theatre completists will get a kick out of the original radio promo spots (included as extra features) that feature Phil Proctor and Peter Bergman.
