In Hayao Miyazaki's magical Kiki's Delivery Service, a 13-year-old girl meets the world head on as she spends her first year soloing as an apprentice witch. Kiki (Kirsten Dunst) is still a little green and plenty headstrong, but also resourceful, imaginative, and determined. With her trusty wisp of a cat Jiji (a gently subdued Phil Hartman) by her side she's ready to take on the world, or at least the quaintly European seaside village she's chosen as her new home. Miyazaki's gentle rhythm and meandering narrative capture the easy pulse of real life (even if his subject is a girl flying high upon a broomstick) and charts the everyday struggles and growing pains of his plucky heroine with sensitivity and understanding. Beautifully detailed animation and the rich designs of the picture-postcard seaside town of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets only add to the sense of wonder. This charming animated fantasy is a wholesome, life-affirming picture that doesn't speak down to kids or up to adults. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Lovely, Humorous, Uplifting: Another Miyazaki Delight.......2007-07-03

Kiki's Delivery Service has the same sort of optimistic delightfulness as that other much-beloved and much-praised Miyazaki offering, My Neighbor Totoro. It has a way of making you not only wish you were young again, but it actually makes you feel as if a few years (or decades) have fallen away and the world is all shiny again, and so are you.

There is no villain. There is no terrible abuse or viciousness. This is a totally sparkly story of a young witch who is sent from home to get her training, which means traveling to a new town and living there for a year. (To some, that might sound rather harsh, like child labor or a dangerous lack of parenting wisdom.) You have to surrender yourself to the idea of this rite of passage, and that Kiki will be all right.

She ends up with her cat, her radio, her purple witch's dress, her mother's trusty broom, in a new city, where she befriends a kindly bakery shop owner who lets her live in the attic. From there, Kiki embarks on a delivery service, taking packages on her broom. The story follows that journey in setting up her business and learning about her capabilities and flaws, as wella as her new city world.

The magic is in the details of both the story and the artwork. The city is beautifully done, and the city feels like a welcoming European city, with some buildings as stately and rich as Viennese jewels and others having a more Mediterranean seaside feel. It's a city that you'd want to visit, and the artwork makes it accessible. The sky takes on astounding colors and depth at times. Small details of characterization in expression and movement--in both humans and animals--or in the setting--a bit of grocery that falls to the floor, the way toes are depicted--add to the richness and are so charming.

And Kiki's a typical 13 year old of a more innocent age--she can be hasty, emotional, enthusiastic, helpful, worried about fashion, respectful of elders, and she is inately good and kind and industrious. (Miyazaki's films seem to uphold the value of kindness, compassion, and hard work quite a bit.) She finds out things about her own abilities, and she makes friends.

Kirsten Dunst does a terrific job of voicing Kiki, and the tone has the ebullience and girlishness that's perfect for the characer. The late Phil Hartman is an amusing black cat familiar.

It's a gentle story, but it's never boring. Even my 47 year old engineer husband found it a fun, sweet, watchable tale.

There is this enveloping magic that I've found in Mr. Miyazaki's movies, whether it's My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, there is something in the combination of story and character and artwork that makes you feel the wonder again of being young and diverted by the adventures in magical worlds where good, ultimately, wins out over bad.

This is the sort of film parents and kids can treasure together. And if you've seen or read or heard too many dark and terrible things, this is the sort of movie that restores a bit of youthful innocence.

Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the VERY rare movies I can watch over and over.......2007-06-03

Other reviews go into great detail about the plot, and how the voice casting and dubbing are great (they are!), and how Hayao Miyazaki is great (also true!) so I'll skip all that.

The main point I'd say to prospective buyers of any age is that this is a NICE movie you will enjoy for years, no matter your age. Kiki has troubles and setbacks, but this is not a dark disturbing movie at all, and the animation itself has a kind of light tone.

After viewing this with my kid for I think the 11th time, I'm compelled to observe that not only do I not get tired of this movie at all, but each time I notice new things and enjoy it all over again. I believe you will too.

5 out of 5 stars worth 50 stars!.......2007-04-06

This is by far my family's favorite movie. It is a tender yet exciting story that is full of adventure. My kids like it because it doesn't have any "bad guys". Beautifully animated!!

5 out of 5 stars Kiki's Delivery Service.......2007-03-31

Kiki's Delivery Service invokes the sense adventures and the innocence of childhood rite. It's a family fun film, which I have come to enjoy. I did not discover Hayao Miyazaki till Disney TV aired this piece of film years ago, and became an instant cult favorite of mine. I could watch this every day and not grow bored of it! And now I'm an avid collector of his films, its so super addicting!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-03-20

Fabulous book with incredible illustrations. Talks about the whole process of making the movie and artwork.
At the end of the book, there's the complete screenplay.
This is my son's favorite book (and mine!)

Amazon.com essential video

Lizard-like Draconian Louis Gossett Jr. and his mortal enemy, earthling Dennis Quaid, crash-land on a hostile planet during a brutal space battle. Forced to rely on one another for survival, they overcome their differences and become fast friends. You can almost hear them break into an off-key version of "It's a Small World." German director Wolfgang Petersen, so brutally honest with his film Das Boot, turns warm and cuddly on us with this intergalactic buddy movie. Much of the problem, though, is that the script sets us up for an intriguing encounter, then settles for a simple and sentimental resolution. Noteworthy set design and strong performances, especially by Gossett, push this beyond mere mediocrity. His performance is fascinating, as he must speak in an alien tongue, which he maintains with artistry and consistency. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-06-21

Excellent story line. However, you may be turned off by the old props and sets. Nothing close to what we have today. I'd buy it only if I wanted to take a stroll down memory lane.

4 out of 5 stars Different sci-fi story..........2007-04-04

This film teaches a lesson from the other side of the political isle than I usually sit, but it tells it well. It is vaguely reminiscent of other films from the 1940's but I can't remember a title. It is a "know thy enemy" film, and teaches about culture clash. I'm not one to respect another culture if it demands it, but if it earns it I do. This film is about two warriors that get stranded together on a dangerously hostile world and have to work together to survive. They learn each other's languages, and culture in a way even a die-hard conservative like me cannot argue with. Perhaps everyone can learn something from this. The film is about right and wrong, and it can change one's perspective. In the end, I remember the audience cheering in the theatres.

4 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-03-09

What a great movie. good time you have watchign this one.
Its a one of a kind movie.
if your a star wars or star gate fan like my girlfriend, you will truly like this movie. its the only sci-fi movie with ''sad'' part in it. really good movie suited for nearly anyone. watch this one with your girlfriend rather then your beer drinking pals.

5 out of 5 stars A must-see for SF lovers.......2007-01-11

Great touching story of friendship between enemies and in this case, species.
Good lesson to learn an apply.
A classic movie I wanted to own and show to my kids.

4 out of 5 stars Different .......2007-01-08

I have seen this movie many times while growing up. Its definately a different approach to Science Fiction, but not too bad. Basically, you get to see how mortal enemies can work out their differences, and work together. A movie with a message.

3 out of 5 stars Check Out the 80's Fashions!.......2006-05-24

Micklin Silver is a nice director. I've seen some of her work from the 1970's; Hester Street is a real gem, the story of Jewish Immigrants at the turn of the 19th Century made with no studio money; it was remarkable. Recently I saw her PBS, adaptation of Scott Fitzgerald's short story classic, Bernice Bobs Her Hair -- again lovely work. Now in Loverboy she gets some Hollywood dough and makes the most of a low budget, an almost Marx brother's touch that in the wrong hands could be a very cheesy sex comedy.

For those of us that have delivered pizza to stranger's homes: yeah, it could happen. "Ladies, a man is at your door." So that's the premise as our college boy has lost his girl and his tuition, so pizza delivery is his only alternative. The ladies soon shower our novice with money for love. He picks up some pointers. In fact, he enjoys the company of various TV personalities, sitcom ladies, and Carrie Fisher. Naturally the husbands find out and they're after our emerging Fred Astaire with the suave moves. Will he get his girlfriend back and save his parents marriage? It's worth a few laughs to find out. Also, check out the late 80's fashions.

Move over, Vin Diesel, because The Transporter, Hong Kong action veteran Corey Yuen's English-language directorial debut, is revving up to steal your thunder. As the other top-billed action star to emerge in 2002, British hunk Jason Statham--previously seen in Snatch, Ghosts of Mars, and The One--plays a hard-driving courier for well-heeled underworld clients. He follows simple rules: (1) Stick to the deal; (2) Don't ask names; and (3) Don't look in the packages he transports. All's well until he violates rule 3, discovering a Chinese beauty (Qi Shu) in the trunk of his tricked-out BMW, and foiling a deadly plot to smuggle Chinese slaves through the port of Marseilles. The first hour is ass-kickin' fun, and the stuntwork is impressive throughout, even as the plot degenerates into a predictable series of bone-breaking showdowns. Statham boasts an appealing combination of brains and brawn, suggesting the suave versatility of a promising career. Coproduced by action auteur Luc Besson and filmed on dazzling French locations, The Transporter is an action fan's delight. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Frank Martin (Jason Statham) is the best as what he does: transporting dangerous or illegal goods with no questions asked. But his last shipment, a beautiful young woman kidnapped by international slave traders, brings deadly complications to his delivery plans. Now Frank must kick into overdrive in a nonstop action-packed fight to save his precious cargo - and his life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars don't break the rules.......2007-06-20

The Transporter is Jason Statham's first big solo role in a movie, and it is a success with the followups of Transporter 2, Crank, and the anticipated upcoming film "War", where he fights one on one against Jet Li. Jason has participated in several films before Transporter in somewhat lesser roles such as "The One" and "The Italian Job", but the Transporter finally lets this man shine - and he brings a character to the screen - Frank Martin - who is intelligent, skillful, strong and one downright cool guy.

The movie has a good and promising beginning, showing off the cool factor of Frank Martin immediately. Followed quickly by an intense car chase scene, the movie never lets up after that - whether it be action or suspense. The story is not too interesting, but it is put together well. Frank discovers that a package he is transporting is carrying a live body inside. Frank's "tough-guy attitude" is worn down and he breaks his own rule by opening the package. The receiver of the package is no dummy, and realizes that Frank broke the rules and has his car destroyed. Frank, fortunately absent from his car during the explosion, seeks revenge but ends up with company along the way by accident - the girl inside the package. From here the story begins to take off as Frank becomes entangled in the situation all the more.

While there isn't a tremendouns amount of action, the spacing of action works well enough. The final 20 minutes are huge, easily containing the best scenes in the movie. I especially liked the fights in the bus garage and the final highway truck scene which reminded me very much of the truck scene from "Raider of the Lost Ark".

Transporter is a great movie for Jason Statham. I really enjoy this guy, and see a good future for him. His martial art skills are truly entertaining, as is his stunts and acting. This is an hour and half of just great relax entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars The Transporter in Blu-ray: Action, Suspense, Romance and Fast Cars!.......2007-05-29

I loved this movie! The story was new and creative! If you like action movies and actor Jason Statham, you'll love this movie. Filmed in the French Riviera!

Video-Blu-ray: This movie enjoys a good transfer-not perfect- but good! You still see some video noise and image grain. Overall, Just slightly better than the SD in term of details with extra grain.

Audio: simply impressive!

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with this one! Action, suspense, romance and fast car chases. If the image grain bothers you, try the SD version-it's not as grainy.

2 out of 5 stars The Transporter.......2007-05-09

Totally wonderful film. Tons of action , but none of is unbelievable (this is NOT Spiderman, thank God). I am personally very attached to the location, in and around Nice, which I visit often. Statham is very cool and low key; Shu Qi is totally delicious. Her English is to die for. The French Commissaire is just wonderful. The driving action (this from a pretty crazy driver) is very satisfying. Luc Besson for ever!! As good as the best of James Bond...

1 out of 5 stars Could be the dumbest movie ever..........2007-04-17

This could be the dumbest movie ever made (and that's a bold statement to make when one considers that "Underworld" also exists). Sadly, unlike "Underworld" there is no leather clad Kate Beckinsale to drool over. Instead, we are treated to a movie that could easily be confused for a map of the human DNA (but a human with an extra chromosome).

Jason Statham, so likable in "Snatch", "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "The Italian Job" is thoroughly wasted in this flick. When he's not busy escaping from his tricked out house, driving fast whilst looking cool and beating up on clichéd Euro trash delivers lines such as "Rule #1. Never change the deal" and is expected to act with a straight face when he's the recipient of this type of drivel - "You're always complaining, except when we make love. Then you say nothing.". Thankfully, the one thing Stetham is great at is keeping a straight face. But you won't. Not if you have a brain, that is.

5 out of 5 stars All action with a story included.......2007-04-17

I went into watching this movie with no knowledge of what it was about. I ended up in the end of it loving it. This movie is an "all action" flick with a story included. Actually it isn't just one story, it is a couple of them. The stunts in this movie and the special effects is outstanding. If you like action flicks, you will love this one. I recommend this movie to anyone that loves action flicks and is a Jason Stantham fan as well. BTW, he does have his shirt off in a couple of scenes in this one.

An ex-con daredevil trucker must reinfect himself with white-line fever in order to save his wife and kid from nasty gunrunners in this enjoyably mindless, twisted-metal-fest from the director of Passenger 57. Longtime MIA action stud Patrick Swayze (who snagged the part after Kevin Sorbo had to suddenly vacate due to health problems) is even more expressionless than usual in the lead role, but helmer Kevin Hooks compensates with a seriously rocking country soundtrack, some pleasantly eccentric supporting characters (including erstwhile crooner Randy Travis and a way-over-the-top Meatloaf as a psychotic trucker preaching damnation by the dashboard light), and--most importantly--a whole lot of rolling iron getting smashed in spectacularly kinetic fashion. A low-down, down-home, cotton-picking flick that blows up real good. --Andrew Wright

2 out of 5 stars Beyond silly.......2007-04-03

I watch (and love) zombie movies, so my ability to suspend disbelief or to enjoy mindless mayhem is extremely high. I don't even mind Mr Swayze in the right film. Red Dawn or Point Break? Watch them anytime. Road House or Next of Kin? Well, maybe not all the way through, but I can always make it to the next commercial break if I'm channel surfing and I see one of them. But this is so absurd, with such endless data dumps where Mr Swayze has to explain to the other characters his own back story or the inner workings of truck brakes (yawn on both counts), and with villains who are beyond comic relief to being just Darwin award winners, that it's impossible to sit through.

5 out of 5 stars Black Dog.......2007-03-08

Ithink Black Dog is avery good movie. It has losts of supense and twists to keep you wondering who is the bad is. I would reccomend it to anyone who likes suppense.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Talent, Waste of Two Hours.......2007-02-10

First off, we're given a character that we can't really like: a man who lost his CDL and just got out of prison because he got into an accident that killed someone. Accident or not, someone died through his carelessness and/or incompetence. So what do the filmmakers do? Put him back behind the wheel. Strike one.

Swayze, in addition to driving illegally, is smuggling. Despite his supposed remorse for his prior offense, he has no problem taking a job that any moron can see is a shady deal. Big strike two.

One of the most ludicrous scenes is when his wife and daughter are kidnapped. The mom runs through the house screaming her daughter's name. The daughter turns around from the bathroom mirror with a blank-faced "Huh?" (uh...she totally missed her mom's panic-stricken screeching?). Then, as a reward for all this misadventure, the FBI cheerfully gives Swayze, the killer-behind-the-wheel, his license to drive again. Strike three, and bye-bye. I have no sympathy for this guy and his whiney family at all.

The director should have let Randy Travis sing for two hours; at least that would have given this film some entertainment quality. If you want to watch a halfway decent trucker movie, rent "Smokey and the Bandit."

Parents-to-be who are interested in the Lamaze method but can't attend a class will be happy to know they can learn it from this two-hour video. Taught by two certified instructors who are OB nurses, this is the only video course that teaches the complete method. Lamaze seeks to reduce pain through relaxation achieved by massage, focus, and a series of breathing techniques. The instructors share an easy rapport, demonstrating the exercises on each other before a roomful of couples and thoroughly explaining the purpose of labor, how to know when it begins, and its three stages. They describe medications and birth complications and include footage of both a natural Lamaze childbirth and a Caesarian delivery. While this tape was clearly shot in the 1980s (the hair styles and fashions are amusingly outdated), it does have new computer-generated diagrams, and the medical information seems up to date. The Lamaze technique itself has not altered, of course, and this tape remains the gold standard in that department. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

If you can't attend childbirth class, this video/dvd will bring the class home to you. "Having Your Baby!" is the only complete, step-by-step instructional video on Lamaze Prepared Childbirth available today that is taught by two nationally recognized, licensed medical professionals who are obstetrical RNs and Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators. Recently redone and updated in 2001, "Having Your Baby ! " combines the best of an old fashioned Lamaze class with the latest in medical information and computer technology.

Now on DVD, all breathing techniques are conveniently condensed into one chapter for easy reference.

Don't be fooled by imitations, substitutions, or copies!

Unlike other videos which have an instructor talking to a home video camera, professionally produced " Having Your Baby!" takes you directly from the classroom into the hospital, labor room and birthing room, allowing you to see, first-hand, discreet footage of obstetrical procedures, epidurals, labor, vaginal and Cesarean births and much more!

Spectacular 3-dimensional animation helps you understand exactly what is happening during labor and birth; other videos show an instructor pointing to a vague diagram that is impossible to see or understand.

" Having Your Baby!" is highly recommended by leading medical professionals and childbirth educators worldwide.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but..........2007-03-08

Basically the same information that the hospital parenting/birthing class gave...nothing new. In fact, hospital staff recommended against the old school "hee hee" breathing as it could lead to hyperventilation (newer techniques avoid this). The fact that this was OBVIOUSLY filmed in the 70's made it difficult to practice and relax as we both had the giggles. Finally, the pronunciation of centimeter as "sont-a-meter" was completely distracting. Worthwhile if you are not attending a parenting/birthing class at your hospital (which I highly recommend!!) as the information is good. If you are signed up for a class at the hospital, you can safely avoid this....

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-11-06

the information is OK but is uninspiringly delivered and the appearance of the presenters is outdated. I would use this video as a last resort.

4 out of 5 stars Still need a personal class.......2006-09-11

A great idea, but not a replacement for a good, small childbirth class where you can meet other parents and interact with the instructor.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2006-08-03

I really wanted to be able to learn about lamaz and childbirth techniques in the privacy of my home...without attending a class! I purchased this hoping I could get the basics down, and this DVD provided that and more. Teaches a wide variety of great breathing and relaxation techniques, and discusses all stages of childbirth very thoroughly. I highly recommend!

2 out of 5 stars Not as useful as expected.......2006-07-28

If you are like me, who read books and magazines to get prepared during pregnancy, you may find this video not that useful. The only thing new is the breathing techniques, but many people say that when it gets to real labor, no breathing technique helps.

An exciting, often funny live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese comic book and anime series, Initial D comes across like Rebel Without a Cause with a slight superhero twist. Starring a largely Chinese cast led by Taiwanese music star Jay Chou, and made by the co-directors of Infernal Affairs, Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak, Initial D (a huge hit in Japan) is the story of Takumi (Chou), the reserved, adolescent son of a former racing champion turned tofu maker (Anthony Wong). Since his mother's recent death, Takumi has been on the receiving end of his father's frustrations, causing him to withdraw and tell no one that in the wee hours, while he's delivering tofu to his dad's sleeping customers, Takumi's secretly mastering the art of "drifting," a form of racing that gives a driver an advantage on curving roads. Pressured into competing with aggressive street racers looking for a bout, Takumi comes out into the open about his skill, leading to a renewal of his relationship with his dad and an unexpected collision with the girl (Anne Suzuki) he loves. A visual treat that keeps finding novel ways of shooting multiple challenges between the same drivers over the same road on pitch-black nights, Initial D is a fine entry in the racing genre, seasoned with snappy comic relief. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

From the acclaimed director of INFERNAL AFFAIRS and THE STORMRIDERS, Andrew Lau, comes this live-action spectacular about the furious streetcar sport of "Drifting". INITIAL D raced its way to the very top of the Hong Kong's summer box office and is based on one of Japan's most popular manga. For 5 years, 18 year-old Takumi (Taiwan musical phenom Jay Chou in his big screen debut) has delivered tofu orders for his ex-racecar driving father (Anthony Wong). By night, Takumi ups the velocity and screeches his way around the dark slopes and narrow curves of the hills surrounding his home, perfecting the dangerous art of "Drifting". So fasten your seat belt and feel the adrenaline pumping full throttle as INITIAL D unleashes a new generation of racers...where speed alone is just not enough.

1 out of 5 stars Hahaha.........2007-04-12

What a sad attempt at bringing an amazing anime to movie. It is entertaining but if you expect it to be anything like the anime, you will be sorely dissapointed. They have changed the characters around, (Personalities) taken some characters out and changed plot lines. If you have never seen the anime perhaps you will enjoy it. Else wise, blah!

3 out of 5 stars Downhill Spiral.......2007-04-10

"Initial D" is a fairly good film. With about 5 separate car races and numerous flashbacks where the same footage is repeated in montages, the film does tend to drag a bit.

Jay Chou plays the teenage Takumi whose stoic facial expressions as a tofu delivery boy get punctured by love. Chou did much of the music in the film; and we see fancy footwork on the car pedals as he jams into gear around the curves. He gets some nice reaction shots after his romantic breakup. Chou followed this, his first film, with "Curse of the Yellow Flower."

Anthony Wong who was recently in "The Painted Veil" plays his alcoholic father who is an ex-racer but who has spiraled downhill since the loss of his wife. He keeps passing out, but he knows how to outfit a tofu delivery car. After repeated threats to knock his son around, it was a wink that let his son know how much his dad loves him. With a cigarette dangling, Wong plays the perfect vagabond.

Anne Suzuki who was in "Moon Child" & "Snow Falling Cedars" plays Natsuki. She seems to be a normal high school girl who develops a crush on Takumi. However, we soon find that the uncle who takes care of her is an older guy who uses her for physical pleasure at the "Love Hotel." Obviously, this causes some problems in her relationship with Takumi who is her true love. Suzuki seemed far too nice and innocent to believably play a lady of the evening (or in her case afternoon), but she does a good job with the innocent love in the film.

Chapman To who was so good in "Six Strong Characters" plays the heavy-set Itsuki, best friend of Takumi. His father owns the service station at which Takumi works. To is the comic relief of the picture, mugging, full of bravado one moment and vomiting by the curb from carsickness the next. Kenny Bee does a nice job as Itsuki's father, owner of the service station.

Edison Chen who was in "Gen Y-Cops" does a good job as being the other independent racer who tries to take out the professional in the climactic final race. The race sequences, mostly at night, are well filmed and keep you glued to the screen. While there may be a few too many of them, overall this is a good movie that grabs your attention and makes you care about its characters. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!.......2007-01-10

I wasn't sure what to expect...didn't know if this would hold true to the anime series of the same name. But, I was pleasantly surprised! Unlike Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift, it didn't go down that same road and stayed true to the spirit of the series. My only quibble is that they tried to cram everything into a near-2 hour movie, but despite that, it's a must see.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-11-23

I have read many of the reviews, and I realize that this movie is a condensed form of the anime series, however, I have to admit that this movie was excellent. Try comparing this movie to the first two incarnations of Fast and Furious (especially #2), I would have to say that Initial D is by far the superior.

The storyline is basic but enjoyable, with the main characters getting a decent amount of screen time. However, what sets the movie apart is the cars! I am a car nut, and I love the way the cars, ranging from the RX-7 to the Trueno, were cleanly built and well crafted to fit the mold from the anime. The drifting sequences were breath-taking, including the final racing sequence (I'll let you watch that).

Please remember that this is geared mainly for those that enjoy cars and drifting, then I highly recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars My Husband loves Initial D.......2006-11-06

I was a little skeptical about the Initial D movie just because it was with real people. And not just animated people. But the movie turned out to be actually pretty good.

Boaz Yakin's astounding debut feature looks at the violent world of the projects through the eyes of a 12-year-old drug runner. Sean Nelson delivers a quiet but intense performance as Michael--street name Fresh--a cynical but introspective kid grown up fast and hard on the killing streets of the projects. Samuel L. Jackson costars as Fresh's estranged father, a speed chess hustler in the city park whose dispassionate philosophy--the chess board as life--becomes the film's central metaphor, as Fresh plots a brilliant, coldly brutal plan to save himself and his junkie sister from his world of drug dealers and street violence. Yakin's assured direction delivers a vividly realized world in bold, crisp images and an austere but poetic style that captures the dispassionate point of view of a heart-hardened adolescent street survivor. The excellent score by former Police-man Stewart Copeland, his most haunting since Rumblefish, mixes smooth symphonic sounds with bluesy guitars and syncopated percussion, giving the soundtrack the same sad intimacy as Yakin's visuals. The world of Fresh is alive with danger that threatens to extinguish all the wonder and joy of childhood--the film's most devastating moment observes Fresh helplessly trying to stop the bleeding of a schoolmate, a girl he has a crush on, caught by a stray bullet from a senseless playground murder. As Fresh loses his innocence playing street thugs and drug dealers like pieces on a chess board, he becomes the greatest victim of all. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars I'm glad I finally found this movie!!!.......2007-05-30

I'm not exactly sure when this title came out or if it was even played at the cinema. Well I came across this movie on one of the movie channels a few years ago and thought is was a great movie. Since then I've been trying to find it. I'm glad I finally found it on here, for a really good price. I thought the story line was interesting. Sean Nelson's character "Fresh" is a refreshing change, cause though he's surrounded by drugs/violence he doesn't get pulled into it all. I love how he plays the game. I'm not a movie critic, I judge movies based on whether or not I won't get out of my seat or change the channel if its on. With that said, this is an entertaining movie that's worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars FRESH DVD.......2007-01-10

Thanks for getting this to us before the holidays! It was in great condition and made a great gift.

4 out of 5 stars Forget about Jackson. Watch it this is a very well done movie. .......2006-08-06

I picked it from the library catalog because Samuel L. Jackson is in it. I made a mistake picking it for that reason because he is a minor character. The main character is Fresh his son. Jackson is only in it for a few good but brief scenes.

Fresh lives with his aunt and 11 children (I think they are all his cousins). He is extremely intelligent, perhaps a genius. Fresh is only around 12 or 13 and he wants a better life so he chooses to be a drug dealer. Everyone recognizes how bright he is even the head drug dealer. His sister is on smack and he loves her and wants to save her. He witnesses two murders, one of them is a girl he is fond of. So he sets his mind and heart on revenge.

Watching this movie you think he is a little adult. And perhaps his mind is at adult level. His plotting his revenge on the harmful adults in his life you would think of him more of a grown up even if his voice hasn't even changed yet. But at the end of the movie you realize he truly is a child who did what he did to save himself and his sister.

I highly recommend this movie. Forget about Jackson this time. It's worth your time because this is a very well done movie.

5 out of 5 stars Like a kick in the stomach.......2006-07-30

There are no fancy cinematic magic tricks going on in this film, aside from an instance of superimposed images that is so simple it almost seems like a throwback to old silent dramas. There are no choreographed gun fights, no switching film stocks to produce psychedelic effects, nothing like that. Not to say that these things cannot be used appropriately and judiciously to enhance the effect of a particular film, but "Fresh" is stripped bare, and must depend on its performances, direction, and writing alone.

For starters, a young Sean Nelson delivers a performance that puts the lion's share of veteran actors to shame. He's completely lacking in self-consciousness, almost like he's unaware that the camera is on him for nine out of ten of the shots in "Fresh." His character, for which the film takes its title, may be the smartest youth in motion picture history for whom genius is not a gimmick or a joke (i.e. "Good Will Hunting," "Real Genius," stuff like that). Watching him, you see a wise old actor in a teen's body; he does not "act" any emotions or thoughts, but merely feels them and thinks them. He seems to embody bits of screen legend: a little Bogart stalwartness there, some of Jimmy Stewart's quiet charm here, and most of all Morgan Freeman's ability to communicate much while doing or saying very little.

That'd be just enough for most movies, but Nelson is backed by a choice supporting cast: the two most recognizable names are obviously Samuel L. Jackson (Fresh's chessmaster/alcoholic father) and Giancarlo Esposito (the slimy, high-living drug dealer Esteban), and both are perfect in award-caliber performances. Two lesser known actors, N'Bushe Wright (Fresh's junkie sister Nichole) and Jean LaMare (as Jake, the hot tempered low-man-on-the-totem-pole employee of Corky) are also terrific in key roles.

The screenplay, by director Boaz Yakin, is doggedly unpredictable, but in retrospect it all makes perfect sense -- nothing in the movie pushes the bounds of credibility. I've seen truckloads of thrillers, most of them are wearily proficient at making you guess what's next. None but a few, however, kept me guessing WHEN to guess, or surprised me with such affecting emotional developments. None but a few moved along with such self-assured grace and style. "Fresh" knows its territory, the time and place it's set in, and it provides characters who talk like they do in real life -- not ones that sound like they're in a movie where they talk like they do in real life.

The use of violence is admirably restrained. Most of it takes place off camera, silhouetted, or cut away from quickly. The two scenes of bloodletting, when they are shown to us, are literally heartbreaking. Not only does "Fresh" keep us off guard on a psychological level, but on an emotional one as well, something few films ever think of doing.

If I were to offer one criticism, it would be that the chess metaphor was pressed just a bit too hard by Yakin (though the final scene is devastating): we already know that this kid is thinking like a master strategist, we don't need quite so many shots of him playing the game in his room. That's a small quibble, though, because the chess metaphor is entirely appropriate, and Jackson's early speech about the game is an ingenious device.

5 out of 5 stars a depressing life.......2006-07-26

This is an amazing movie. It was a real eye-opener about how rough and dirty the streets can be, and how important it is for a child to grow up correctly. If only every child found someone to turn to when things go bad for them. I remember when I first watched Fresh and how it was 2 in the morning and I *really* kept my eyes focused on the screen (most of the time my eyes like to wander). A must-see film.

5 out of 5 stars Miyazaki films are the BEST.......2007-05-19

I love miyazaki films, they have action, adventure, love, comedi, and mysteri. They are beultiful and even make me cry, the first time i heard aboult it I thought it was for babys but they have felings too. I read the comic book of "Princess Mononoke" and it was very violent but the movie is
pg-13. they are all fun and fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars All the films you could ever want, in one buy........2007-05-17

If I didn't already have some of these movies, I would buy this pack in an instant.

5 out of 5 stars A Mass of Anime Classics.......2005-10-27

Miyazaki just knows how to entertain us. So much so that a huge name such as Disney would pick up his Japanese films. And this is as good a team as I've seen in quite some time (Disney and Ghibli). Disney has the capability of getting those big named voices (Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, and Michael Keaton to name a few) that make these movies twice as magical as they already are.

This collection brings together not just two of Miyazaki's truest masterpieces (Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke) but also four more of his past successes. With Howl's Moving Castle looming for DVD release this is a great way to get yourself affiliated with Ghibli work. I'd recommend these to anyone but especially parents who want some family time but are completely bored with what their children enjoy. Not all movies work for the entire family, however. One, Princess Mononoke is definitely more mature than others, while Kiki's Delivery Service is geared more for the kids.

Below is a list of shorter reviews:
Spirited Away: Miyazaki's Oscar winner about a girl who gets lost in a spirit world and must become a worker to survive while also trying to save both her parents and her memory. It's a children's love story filled with morals.

Princess Mononoke: Miyazaki's action film, this movie starts out exciting and end in the same way. A fantasy epic of gods, monsters, and the humanity's capabilities for good.

Porco Rosso: Miyazaki's love of the sea and planes becomes apparent with this movie, about a man turned pig who must battles air-pirates in order to save the Adriatic. Funny the whole way through, but with a few touching moments in between.

Nausicaa...: This is a relevant tale about human and nature and our wont for destruction. The humans of the Valley of the Wind battle giant insects and a poisonous jungle to keep the jungle itself from spreading. Nausicaa isn't too serious but there is a clear theme.

Kiki's Delivery Service: This is a tale of a young witch who must go out in the world in order to learn what her capabilities are, and she takes a job as a delivery girl. As heartwarming as any of Miyazaki's films, the children will love this one.

Castle in the Sky: This film follows two young people as they seek out the mysterious castle in the sky. The girl searches to find the secrets of her past and the boy searches to follow the dreams of his dead father.

4 out of 5 stars If you prefer a Studio Ghibli set..........2005-09-30

If you want more of these types of works, look for the Studio Ghibli DVD boxed sets that have 12 (blue box) or 14 (white box) movies depending on which set you can find. If you don't mind paying for shipping, a lot are available from Australian sites if you don't like the Hong Kong (Chinese) packaging.

I know that the white box set has movies that offer both English and Japanese audio. I prefer to hear them in their native Japanese dialogue (it's more authentic). Sometimes I'd watch the anime a second time to disregard the dialogue and pay attention to the details (facial expressions, background, shadows, colors, etc.)

Ghibli and Miyazaki movies are generally wholesome with simple plots but with lots of heart and strong messages.

5 out of 5 stars Miyazaki's Work.......2005-09-19

The first miyazaki anime i saw was Princess Mononoke a few years back and i was struck by the intriguing storyline. It was only when i saw my second miyazaki, - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - that i recognised the animation and style of the director and got hooked. The Miyazaki six pack contains all my favorite Miyazaki masterpieces, including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. This is a definite collectors piece to any fan of the great Hayao Miyazaki.

Cheers
