Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Some Like it Hot.......2007-06-26
Long before "Tootsie" and "Mrs. Doubtfire", Wilder gave us this comic, gender-bending masterpiece, which came at the very end of the conservative `50s, providing a preview of the more liberated decade to come. Here the director is in pure comedy mode, and pulls off a tricky premise brilliantly. Lemmon and Curtis make an ideal comic duo, Monroe sparkles as the object of their sisterly affections, and Joe E. Brown nearly steals the picture as a dotty millionaire besotted with Lemmon's Daphne. A howl, truly.
Hilarious Classic!.......2007-05-09
Of of the funniest movies of all times. Billy Wilder is a genius, and even though this was made in the 50's, it is not outdated at all and truly a fun film!
Quintessential fun.......2007-04-23
Boy! With present Hollywood standards in comedy going down and down, Billy Wilder black and white movie mixing gangsters, crossdressing, gender clichés, music and intelligence... giving us a melting pot that comes out as a real gem.
Marilyn Monroe has never been one of my favorites, but the dance scene and final dialogue between Jack Lemmon and Joe E.Brown worth the price of a lifetime in movie theaters.
A must!
We Wouldn't be Caught DEAD in Chicago!.......2007-04-23
"Suppose the stock market crashes. Suppose Mary Pickford divorces Douglas Fairbanks. Suppose the Dodgers leave Brooklyn!"
Suppose another improbable premise: Two down on their luck musicians inadvertently witness Chicagoland's infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre and to get outa town they don wigs, flapper dresses and cloche hats and join an all-girl band, bound for Florida on the Sunshine Limited. What a hoot!
Even if you don't know all of the historical references, this is a film that works flawlessly from start to finish with gags that are fresh and fun no matter how familiar they become. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon are unconvincingly improbable dolled up as dames, but they manage to hoodwink bandleader Sweet Sue (Joan Shawlee), songbird Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) and the rest of the cast, to the point that Jack snags a "rich millionaire" (Joe E. Brown who hams it uproariously as "Osgood Fielding III") with enough moxie to tango till dawn! What fun!
Billy Wilder must have loved the `twenties, the songs and the clothes, and who doesn't love the Del Coronado Hotel even when it doubles for the Seminole Ritz? "Spats Colombo" (George Raft) has a wonderful insider Hollywood gag bit harking back to his own smaller "Guino Rinaldo" supporting role in "Scarface"--could it be the very same quarter being flipped? ("Where did you pick up that cheap trick?").
The songs are fabulous, especially when Marilyn is "Runnin' Wild", does her o so scantily clad version of Boop-a-Doop gal Helen Kane and warms up Tony to "I'll Build a Stairway to the Stars". And "Underneath the Sheltering Palms" is the perfect resort-arrival song--Disney should try it at their pseudo-Del AKA Grand Floridian.
Remember: "It's not how long it takes, it's who's taking you." And the film's perfect ending line is surely one of the five greatest in all Hollywood history. (The others? "Casablanca", "The Wizard of Oz", "Sunset Boulevard" and "Now, Voyager"). Maybe nobody's perfect, but this comedy sure is!
Hot Collection........2007-03-27
One of Marilyn Monroe's best films. A classic duo of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Guarenteed to make you laugh!

Customer Reviews:
Great Production, but quite Catholic.......2007-07-01
I give this DVD a well deserved 4.5 stars. The production value is top-notch! The insite into three players (Piazza, Eckstien, Sweeny, and Suppan) ane two coachs (McKeon) are great. Brief appearences and comments by many other players. Excellent editing. Excellent use of showing the players and coaches are real humans who make mistakes, and are humbled by both those mistakes and thier faith.
I take one half-point for the DVD being soley focused on Catholic players. Nothing against Catholithism, I was raised Catholic myself and still have much respect for the Church. But the DVD description is silent on being Catholic focused, and excludes any serious focus on players who are non-Catholic Christians (Sid Bream, Gary Carter, Albert Puljos, John Olerud). I would have given it five stars if the packaged description was more specific.
I hope to use it in my Sunday School ministry, but being a non-Catholic, will have to skip some minor sections dealing with McKeon's devotion to a Saint.
I hope the producers of this DVD will make future productions on other sports. I will eagerly buy them, but I do hope a clearer description is provided.
Champions of Faith Review.......2007-06-27
This is a fabulous video! Major figures in baseball describe how their lives are enriched by living their faith. I bought this video to show the boy's youth group at my parish. I recommend it to anyone who wants to help young people (as well as older folks) form a strong faith connection. Champions of faith is a great video that counters the rhetoric that works to eliminate matters of faith from everyday life. This video has my highest recommendation.
We need real, human, heroes.......2007-05-16
I was blown away by this video. I was not sure what to expect. Baseball and Faith? I'm not a huge baseball fan (hubby is), but I do know many of these names listed on the video.
I was captivated. The hour flew by, and I was entranced. I loved every minute of this movie. Baseball stars - but you see them as real, struggling, human beings...the same as we all are. It was so easy to resonate with their stories - their ups and downs.
Kids need excellent role models and heroes to look up to. No need to look further than this video.
Adults need excellent reminders that we are all human, that we all fail, and that all that matters is our (struggling) faith in God. A thousand years from now, all that matters is our relationship with God today.
Talk about an excellent gift for Dads for Father's Day; for graduates from college, high school, middle school, ok - any age!
Never Watch a Baseball Game the Same Way Again.......2007-05-16
Get goosebumps!
We tend to compartmentalize our lives. We see sports as one thing, our faith as another, family stuff as another, our job as another, school as another and so on.
This video shows the integrity of professional athletes who are striving to live lives of faith as pro baseball players and connect the dots for us and our children. It doesn't pretend to make these men out as saints, but as men who "get it" and see that their sports performance is just one part of the big picture.
And it is well done. Not too heavy-handed or maudlin. Good for family viewing, for schools, for coaches, and even for Sunday School! Awesome.

As its title suggests, Like Mike is a rousing wish-fulfillment fantasy for any kid who's ever dreamed of soaring for a game-winning slam dunk like basketball legend Michael Jordan. It's fun but formulaic, beginning when 14-year-old, 4-foot-8 orphan Calvin Cambridge (played by appealing teen rapper Lil' Bow Wow) dons a magical pair of hand-me-down Nikes with the enticing initials "M.J." written inside. Next thing you know, Calvin's the new star of the L.A. Knights, an instant NBA celebrity taking his team to the playoffs alongside favorite teammate Tracy Reynolds (The Best Man's Morris Chestnut), with a bevy of villains (including reliable weirdo Crispin Glover) trying to steal his thunder. With Jerry Maguire's Jonathan Lipnicki as a fellow orphan, and a solid supporting cast including Eugene Levy, Robert Forster, and two dozen NBA stars, Like Mike is schmaltzy and predictable (and, surprisingly, there's no cameo from Jordan himself), but its sweet, good-natured quality will captivate kids from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Teenage rap sensation Lil Bow Wow makes his feature film debut in this "surefire heart-warmer" (Los Angeles Times) about an orphan boy named Calvin who lives out his dream of playing in the NBAwith a little help from a magical pair of sneakers! Soon after he laces up the mysterious high-tops, Calvin's amazing basketball skills land him a spot on the Los Angeles Knights team. In addition to hitting 25-foot jumpers and throwing down rim-rattling slam dunks, the small superstar sets his sights on another dream...having a family. But first he and his pals must defeat Bittleman, the orphanage headmaster trying to sabotage Calvin's career and dash his hopes of ever being adopted. Filled with high-flying fun and hilarious hijinks, Like Mike will have your whole family cheering into overtime!
Customer Reviews:
Great fun for the whole family!.......2006-08-05
This one surprised me. I expected it to be a little more hard, having Lil' Bow Wow as its main star. But BW, as I like to call him now, surprised me! He's a hell of an actor, and has a great career ahead of him.
As the older rappers pull the young kids into their "good 'ol boy" network, I hope that the quality doesn't start to take a dive, as it did, when this behavior was prevalent in the White corporate world. But given that I have not seen that yet, I hope that BW continues in his career to Rap Stardom!
Peace!

The magic of M.J.!.......2006-06-12
This is a full entertainment recommended for all family. A pleasant fairy tale adapted to modern times in which Cinderella transforms into a orphan boy who dreams and dreams until the hand of fate will intervene by him to make his dreams come true.
A sympathetic movie with a predictable end but that gets its aim.
Great Movie!.......2006-02-25
I bought this for my 9yr old son who loves basketball. He's watched it so often, even I know the words to the songs!
It's a great kids' movie!

A Good Movie!!!!.......2005-04-19
Like mike is a really good movie because it`s a story about an orphan who lives in a group home. And it was a bully who tried to take his sneakers and he threw it on top of a power line. Then he Calvin tried take them off and then the shoes got electrocuted and it gave the shoes a lot of power. He was selling candy to a coach and he gave him a $20 dollar bill and he went to the staples center. He got lucky when they picked him to play Tracy Reynolds. And he never missed a shot. The ending part was really good because Tracy adopted Calvin and Merph. I read some people reviews and they was hatin on it. (...) I`ve seen it a thousand times.

Jerome Jenkins Jr. (Jascha Washington, Big Momma's House) is a normal 12-year-old. That shouldn't be a problem, except he wants to be king of the neighborhood court, so he'll do whatever it takes to get bigger and better--wear ankle weights, hang upside down, etc. His parents are divorced and he lives with his mom, Lydia (Enuka Okuma, Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye), and cousin, Ray (Kel Mitchell, Kenan & Kel). Back in the day, dad J.J. (Michael Beach, Third Watch) was the local hoops legend, but he choked in a crucial game and failed to make pro. Now he's known as "The Choker." Jerome wants to make everyone forget by becoming the best. As in the first film, a cross between Cinderella and a Nike commercial, a pair of Michael Jordan's old kicks materializes just when he needs them most. An electrical storm brings them to life and Jerome becomes "like Mike" with the roundball. Like most direct-to-DVD sequels, Streetball is essentially a lower-budget remake. The good news is that Washington, taking over from rapper Bow Wow, is a likable lead and the new story is actually less preposterous than the original, in which the NBA signs a 14-year-old. Young b-ball fans are sure to be entertained by the tale of a regular kid who gets a taste of stardom, while the older set should seek out Hoop Dreams or Love and Basketball for a more mature look at the sport. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Get those sneakers on tight, because the action's moving out of the Arena and onto the Street! In this slam-dunk sequel to the hit film Like Mike, those legendary, magical high-tops find their way into the eager young hands of a pint-sized basketballer who dreams of rising to the top of the fast, fun and no-holds-barred world of high-stakes "Streetball"!
Die-hard hoops fan Jerome Jenkins Junior gets no respect at the local court, because he's too young, too slow, and worst of all?too short. But when he puts on a mysterious pair of sneakers, he's suddenly able to dribble, drive, and dunk like a champ! Jerome's rise to streetball fame seems unstoppable! But when it threatens to alienate his family and friends, Jerome realizes there's a high price to pay to be crowned the King of Concrete!

I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. I like how it didn't try to copy line by line the original, or repeat the scenarios or scenes. It was a nice twist to add the "street ball" nitch too. The young actors were enjoyable to wach, and the acting was not bad.
All in all, very nice film.
1 star lower than 4, since it went straight to DVD. Poor marketing for this one.
Recommded.

Certainly not a definitive history of the blues..............2006-09-12
Feels Like Going Home attempts to tell the story by tracing the blues back through the Mississippi Delta and back in Africa. Blues player Cory Harris takes us from the Mississippi Delta to the African country of Mali to detail how the blues were influenced culturally by the people of tribesmen of Mali and the suffering engendered by slavery which forever separated families on their shores.
This DVD also has some excellent historical footage never before seen by me, including that of Son House explaining why he quit playing the blues around 1942 after the field recordings Alan Lomax made in Mississippi. Son House stopped playing after some of his contemporaries started dying (Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson), and he actually thought he would be next! I was surprised to hear him say this, but he honestly believed that, and as such, moved to New York state. Until some blues enthusiasts found him in the mid 60's, many had no idea where he was....some even claimed to have seen him in movie theaters in Alabama. This was the first time I had ever heard Son House explain why he gave up music for two decades.
A criticism: Much more time could have been spent on the history of the early blues in the United States. The rare footage was wonderful to see, as were the interviews with legends such as Johnny Shines, because he had first-hand knowledge of Robert Johnson and that era. But once Cory Harris goes back to Mali, little is offered as way of a direct and tangible nexus linking the two. In fact, too much time is spent introducing Cory Harris to various tribesman, their families, and then they even highlight the welcoming ceremony of guns for Cory Harris....I thought this was a DVD about the blues! The first 45 minutes were very interesting, but the latter half left much to be desired.
